Notes for Peace
Music, like time, is often referred to as a healer, a balm for the soul. The Negaunee Music Institute is in its seventh year of a program that makes this axiom a reality for Chicago families that have suffered unimaginable loss due to gun violence.
Called Notes for Peace, this program empowers people to express their emotions, honor their loved ones, and process grief as they seek healing through songwriting. One hundred songs have been written since the project began in 2018.
Notes for Peace is one of several initiatives developed in partnership with the UK-based Irene Taylor Trust. Their initial collaboration in 2013 was a songwriting project with young men at the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center. A year later, the Irene Taylor Trust’s artistic director, Sara Lee, returned to spearhead the Negaunee Music Institute’s participation in the Lullaby Project, a program of the Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall that helps young parents write lullabies for their children. With Lee and project leader Rex Horan’s guidance, the Institute partnered with the non-profit support group Purpose Over Pain, beginning in 2018, to lead songwriting sessions for families affected by gun violence in Chicago and to establish Notes for Peace. The songs composed during these sessions over the years have been performed by professional singers at live concerts and recorded at Chicago Recording Company.
The first Concert for Peace, in June 2017, was a collaboration among the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Negaunee Music Institute, the CSO’s former Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma, and St. Sabina Church in the AustinGresham neighborhood. This concert featured Ma with CSO and Civic Orchestra of Chicago members playing symphonic arrangements of participants’ songs. The Negaunee Music Institute has continued these powerful concerts at other venues, such as Austin Town Hall, Epiphany Center for the Arts, and Symphony Center, and in a series of music videos as a result of the pandemic, when public concerts were not possible.
A video produced by Green River Films poignantly captures the transformational process for both the grieving families and the Civic musicians who participate in Notes for Peace. The film depicts families seeing their memories take the form of a meaningful musical tribute as they share deeply personal stories, feelings,
CSO.ORG 5
and reflections with the Civic Fellows. In turn, the musicians develop lyrics and melodies with the families until a complete, orchestrated song is created. Finally, one sees that these songs are performed by an amazing group of singers and instrumentalists, recorded, and made available—along with the songs’ lyrics and photos of those who mourn and their loved ones—on the website notesforpeace.org. While the chief goal of Notes for Peace is to serve the families of Purpose Over Pain, the project has expanded the skills of participating Civic Fellows by introducing them to new ways to apply their musicianship.
“We’ve learned over the years that collaborative songwriting is an effective method for community engagement,” said Jonathan McCormick, director of education and NMI, “and we’ve become passionate about responding to the precipitous gun violence in our city. Music is one of the resources we can offer.”
The Negaunee Music Institute is committed to serving the families of victims of gun violence through the important work of Notes for Peace. In the wake of ongoing violence in Chicago, the need for emotional support, advocacy for peace, and activism remains. This music gives comfort to those who seek healing and voices to those who need to be heard.

Purpose Over Pain
Purpose Over Pain was formed in 2007 by several Chicago area parents who lost their children to gun violence, providing these and other family members affected by violence a literal purpose to be effective in preventing gun violence over merely living with the pain. The organization provides positive development activities for children and youth, advocates for and promotes safer communities, and strengthens families by providing crisis support to parents or guardians whose children have been victims of gun violence. Notes for Peace, among its other initiatives, offers a platform to sensitize the community about the painful effects of gun violence, brings awareness to common-sense preventive solutions, and provides a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for our youth, parents, and members of the community.

Hilary Hahn Violin

Hahn is a prolific recording artist and commissioner of new works; her twenty-three feature recordings have received every critical prize. She is in her third season as the first-ever Chicago Symphony Orchestra Artist-inResidence, the New York Philharmonic’s Mary and James G. gives several small-ensemble performances, including three solo recitals, recitals with Iveta Apkalna and Seth Parker Woods, and chamber-music concerts in Dortmund and Chicago.
Hahn related to her fans naturally from the start of her career. She has committed to signings after nearly every concert and maintains a collection of fan art received over the past twenty-five years. Hahn’s Bring Your Own Baby concerts create a welcoming environment for parents of infants to share their enjoyment of classical music with their children. Her social-media initiative, #100daysofpractice, has transformed practice into a community-building celebration of artistic development, with nearly one million posts from fellow performers and students.
Hilary Hahn is a prolific recording artist, whose feature albums on Decca, Deutsche Grammophon, and Sony have all opened in the top-ten of the Billboard charts; three have won Grammys. Her most recent, a recording of Ysaÿe’s six sonatas for solo violin, celebrates her artistic lineage. She is the recipient of numerous awards: most recently, she was named Musical America’s 2023 Artist of the Year, delivered the keynote speech of the Women in Classical Music Symposium, and received the 2021 Herbert von Karajan Award and the Glasshütte Original Music Festival Award, which she donated to music-education nonprofit Project 440.
Journey Allison Vocals
Journey Allison is a musician and singersongwriter from the South Side of Chicago. Growing up in church and being surrounded by music her whole life, she began her career in music while still a student. She was a member of the St. Sabina Church Youth Choir, where she shared the stage with many musical icons across a variety of genres, including Jennifer Hudson, Michelle Williams, Dave Koz, and Walt Whitman and the Soul Children of Chicago Choir, among others. One of the first vocalists to be part of the Notes for Peace project, which launched in 2018, she sang alongside world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. This was a shifting point, allowing her to see how making music in the community with other like-minded people could leave a profound impact.
Journey Allison is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in music performance at Iowa Wesleyan University, with an emphasis on trumpet, voice, and piano and a minor in business administration. Committed to a career in the arts, she is currently working on her first recorded single, entitled “With You,” which is scheduled to be released this spring. She also is employed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association, where she continues to unite her passion for music composition with arts administration.

Her experience in the entertainment industry has taken her to many places, including Star Search (two-time Teen Vocalist Champion), the Apollo Theater in New York, and WGCI-FM Home Jam as a two-time winner in her hometown of Chicago. A graduate of Columbia College Chicago, Dortch earned a bachelor’s degree in music with a concentration in theater and vocal performance. Over the years, her star has continued to rise not only as a soloist but also as a background-vocals performer and studio singer for some of music’s top artists, including Stevie Wonder, Michael McDonald, Seal, Celine Dion, Gladys Knight, Faith Hill, Kenny Loggins, Richard Marx, R. Kelly, and Diana Ross. In addition to her roles as singer and songwriter, Dortch has also acquired actress, model, jingle singer, voiceover artist, playwright, and instructor. Following the 2014 release of her debut album, Mindset, McNeal showcased her soaring vocals for a national audience on NBC’s The Voice in 2017. Mentored by Jennifer Hudson while on the show, she has since performed across the United States and Europe. In 2019 a viral video of McNeal singing house music on an El train in Chicago led to an appearance on the Kelly Clarkson Show.
McNeal has performed in the Notes for Peace concerts since 2018, and in 2022 she also appeared with members of the CSO, conductor Andrew
Grams, and children’s rocker Justin Roberts in the ensemble’s school and family concerts.

Some of her favorite performances include two featured solo appearances with the Grant Park Music Festival; playing Julia Child in performances of Lee Hoiby’s hilarious one-woman opera, Bon Appetit!; and a rousing rendition of “Row, Row Your Boat” with Yo-Yo Ma at Children’s Memorial Hospital as part of her ongoing work with the Citizen Musician Initiative. She is also featured on a recording for Carnegie Hall’s Lullaby Project in partnership with the CSO, helping young parents to create original lullabies.

Performance highlights include the world premiere of a staged work by Gary Fry with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; “Une bête” in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les sortilèges with Esa Pekka Salonen and the CSO; Stella/Muse in Pittsburgh Festival Opera’s Tales of Hoffmann: Retold; solo turns at the Royal Albert Hall and Wigmore Hall; Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream with Civic Orchestra of Chicago; and Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 with Lake Forest Civic Orchestra.
