ANNUAL FLEET REVIEW

t the beginning of each yachting season it has been the custom for the

Commodore and the Flag Officers to inspect the Chicago Yacht Club fleet. In days gone by, the Commodore made the inspection from the deck of his Flagship, visiting each yacht in turn at its regular mooring. As the Club grew, so grew the number of yachts and anchorages until it became impractical for the Commodore to perform the annual inspection in this manner. As a result it has become more expedient to reverse the procedure, and today the yachts pass in review before the Commodore... hence, the Fleet Review. The Commodore’s Annual Fleet Review has become one of the Club’s premier yachting events of the season. The participants enjoy the pageantry of passing in review and having the CYC Flag Officers salute the ensign. Spectators seated on the patio have a wonderful view of the procession of vessels in dress ship, crews at attention lowering their ensign to “half mast” before the Flag Officers as they wait for their salute. The Fleet Review is an event that all members can enjoy both on and off the water.

ABOUT OUR FLEET

he Chicago Yacht Club has over 1,200 Regular, Associate, Junior and Veteran members. Of these, roughly half are boat owners. While boat ownership is not required to join, we definitely want our members to be interested in boating and the “nautical arts.” Boat owners, like their boats, come in all shapes and sizes. There are power boats and sailboats and the variety in each group is great. The 2021 Club Directory lists nearly 220 boats in our Power Fleet with the largest being 112 feet long. Our Power Fleet consists mainly of boats designed for cruising. While trawlers in particular are not designed for high speed, many of the boats are. Most power boats have creature comforts on par with a fine home. And engines, of course, are the heart of a power boat. But a yachtsman who owns a power boat will tell you that his real joy is found in being able to run and operate the boat, knowing how it will perform at certain RPM’s and in various conditions, understanding trim and fuel consumption, and being able to dock it in a cross wind or back into a slip unassisted. These are skills in which the accomplished power boater can take justifiable pride. Our Fleet of sailboats are divided into three fleets: Offshore Sail, Cruising Sail, and Racing Yacht Fleet. Offshore boats are generally used for racing, and our Offshore Fleet has 74 boats. Generally sleeker and with more equipment, these boats go fast and carry large inventories of sails, each cut for specific wind speeds and conditions. Carrying crews as few as 6 or more than 15, you can usually find these boats racing every weekend during the summer. Our Cruising Sail Fleet is comprised of about 138 boats. Cruising sailboats tend to have more creature comforts and a touch less speed. Of course that’s a blanket statement, and there are many boats that fill the racer/cruiser dual purpose bill, with both racing sails and crews plus full interiors with refrigeration, showers, and occasionally a washer/dryer. If you’re participating in the Race to Mackinac, you’d want to give serious thought to going on a cruising boat with more comfort. On the other hand, getting to Mackinac Island faster can have its rewards. Our Racing Yacht Fleet consists of approximately 44 boats and includes Etchells, Shields, and various dinghies. These boats tend to be smaller, though at 33 feet the Etchells is a good sized boat. These boats are raced actively and most are located at our Belmont Station, about 4.5 miles north of Monroe Station. Chicago Yacht Club is proud to continue its tender service at Belmont Station. The tender is a real time-saver for our members, and keep an eye out for it in the parade of boats today. Make sure to take some time to admire the DragonForce 65 boats that are on display in the lobby. The DragonForce 65 boats are a competitive one-design Remote Controlled yacht that is recognized by the American Model Yachting Association. Chicago Yacht Club has a large and diverse fleet with many opportunities for people to be on the water. We hope you enjoy the parade of boats and your entire day of tradition and fun at the Chicago Yacht Club.
