The 1980 Mackinac Race was the first for four of my six crew members. The Wednesday before leaving, we all

Commodore Watson with Hill Blackett, Jr.-owner of CONDOR" first place in MHS division.
Charlevoix, Frankfort, and Pentwater. The trouble has come after the trip. From the wives, secretaries, and bosses of my crew, I'm learning that the
transition back is apparently very difficult for them. For instance: Shaving, washing, and changing clothes every three days is not work-
ing well for my guy who's a bank trust officer. Neither is the working two hours, sleeping two hours . . .
The continuing diet of brownies and beer is beginning to take its toll on them physically. One wife is complaining about the recently installed "backstay'' in their washroom.
Another complains of her husband's sleeping in his clothes, particularly since he insists they have to be wet.
The suggestion of rafting beds up for the night is causing concern at another house. While it was good while we were on the water, and we all raved about the food, I feel our "cook" is a little too
optimistic about the financial success of his "Cooking at Sea" recipe book which includes such delights as: Gene Kinney's SPRING FEVER before the stan. bl Carol Stnger -Photos ,-:rmodore Phil Watson's NAMIS, suited up for rainy start of IOR Section 1.
Liver sausage and cheese sandwiches Chili and hot dogs Hor d'oeuur tray of pretzels, cheeseits, and peanuts
Cocktail specialties of rum on the rooks, bourbon on the rocks, or your choice of Strohs or Lite.
Hopefully, some resolution of the difficulties fve mentioned will be shortly forthcoming. I'm just glad I've got the years of sailing experience that puts me beyond all that. Looks like it's going to rain . . . think I'll put on my storm gear and go stand outside. Tom Lilleberg #9571

Football season is just around the corner. The Bears have two pre-season home exhibition games in August: Cleveland on the 23rd, and St. Louis on the 30th. Because of the 6:00 p.m. kick-off and other Club functions, we plan no football oriented services for these two games. Into the season for home games, we will at the Monroe Clubhouse provide buffet brunch on Sunday, and buffet dinner for one Monday game. We will also provide round-trip bus service to Soldier's Field as in the past. The schedule will be as follows:

I98O GREE]I STAR While the big boats were heading
out for Mackinac Island, the Stars were in Wilmette competing for the Novice Championship, where CYC skippers took the first three places in a 30 boat, 3 race event. Todd Cozzens captured the Green Star after winning both of Saturday's races and hanging on for Sunday. Chris Hanke was a close second, and Rick Rundle third. Bob Vickery was in contention for fifth but lost a protest after the final race. The regatta proved to be an excellent
test of foul weather gear with Saturday's races besieged with rain and Sunday's race with a strong northeaster. The swells during the last caused
several sessions of 'bumper cars' at marks but Todd Cozzens had the most fun at the second leeward mark as he inadvertently jibed. His maneuver swept the decks clean of skipper and crew but both were able to scramble aboard before they rounded the mark.
1979 VENETIAN NIGHT Trophy Winners-are pictured with Chicago Mayor Jane Byrne at a special award ceremony at the Monroe Street Power Yacht Dock Party. This year's festival takes place on August 22nd.
Probably the most curious part of the series was to see who was sailing who's boat with what sails and who crewing. Todd sailed Knight's boat
his, Mike Brown, as crew; Cick was sailing Terry's boat with Rob's sails and Mario crewing; Warren was sailing his old boat with his new boats
with Buddy's sails and an old friend of
sails.
In spite of the weather it was an enjoyable regatta. The races were well run and the party Saturday proved to be an excellent retreat from the racing. Susan & Dave Froelich

In 1954 Dick Latham commissioned Reimers to design a Lake Michigan boat from scratch; however, the fin-

Some very forward thinking people decided to irlunge into fiberglass. With molds the boais could be produced with the same one design shape and without a

The common denominators were low topsides, long overhangs, bunks that would make a WWII submariner feel cramped and Porta Potties. After a good deal of thought, Dick Latham ordered a hull and wasjoined by Franz Wagner and George Jensen who ordered its mate.

Those two boats arrived twenty five
years that followed. They raced with, and took all the silverware from, the Open 22's until 1962 when they joined

the new glass boats level competitors of the wood ones. At this point Latham and Jensen offered their spanking new "Skipjack," the last and best of the Schetin boats, as the model for the mold. If you haven't trailed your own boat, you will never appreciate what it
took to offer "Skipjack" for the 1460 mile trip to Creekmore's. Andy Johnson tackled the job of towing'her down there on a trailer built just for that purpose. One year later, the first glass Udell was completed. Now there are four. The name Udell? It's a memorial to an early 22er, Clare Udell, which says a
lot about him and what the men who developed this fleet thought of him. There are a lot ofothers who have been associated with the Udell22's. Sailing a Udell is like living in Rogers Park; if you haven't done it you know someone
who has.
The Udells are a point of pride to us of the CYC. They are the only Chicago Yacht Ctub One Design; aboat specifically designed and built to race and sail from this club in these waters. They do. Superbly.
At last, the first glass Udell is done.

Because of the heavy and often capacity use of our parking lot, we will extend our weekend rules throughout
September. This means that there will be no guest parking between the hours of 1500 on Friday and 1600 on Sunday.
If you are inviting guests to join you for the Bears home football games in September, please suggest that they park in the East Monroe Street Garage. For Venetian Night, August 22nd, there will be no parking at the Monroe Clubhouse. The lot must be secured at

We also want to remind members who are participating in the Tri-State Race over Labor Day weekend that overnight parking is against the Club rules. Do not plan to leave your car in the Club lot for the race. With the expected heavy usage of the Club on that weekend, cars found in violation of the rules may have to be towed
