The tradition of Newr Year's Eve fun and
I
fellowship continues strong at the Chicago Yacht Club. More than 150 members and guests assembled at the Monroe Street Station on New Year's Eve 1980, and left early the following year after a most pleasant evening of relaxation, good food, and pleasant dancing. Just prior to midnight, incoming Commodore Roy W. Spanjer was introduced, and his watch was declared to be the official New Year's Eve count-down watch of the Chicago Yacht Club. When he declared it to be midnight at Monroe Street, nets of balloons were released, horns were blown, ladies were kissed, and 1981 was ushered in with hope and glory.

We started the 1981 season with our Winter party at the home of Howard
and Joan Kastel. The next social function will be our Spring party at the Bazler's in April. Someone once commented that its too bad you have to wait untilthe Awards Banquet to get your reward for doing well during the season. This year we are going to try to rectify that by establishing two prizes for each race which will be awarded to the winners in the bar right after the race. One prize will be for the skipper and crew of the first place boat. The other will bre for the skipper and crew of the boat thatturned in a particularly good performance for that race relative to previous efforts. This latter prize will be awarded by a committee formed for that purpose. Sounds interesting? We shall see! This year the big regatta that every-
one has their eyes on is the World's at Marblehead, Mass. lt promises to be a big f leet and an ideal place to hold the contest. Chicago will send four boats, and we are all looking rorward to bei n g .i?J;:J",8"#;o

A meeting of the Racing Yacht
Fleet Committee was held at Monroe Station, Chicago Yacht Club, on January 6,1981.
The iommittee confirmed thatthe annual awards dinner for the racing fleets be held at the Belmont Station on Saturday, November 7,1981 ,and that steps be taken to hold the 1982 dinner on the first SaturdaY in November. The chairman of the com-
mittee was requested to write a letter to the Board of Directors of the yacht club confirming that the
dinner be held on the first Saturday in November in successive Years at the Belmont Station and asking that the Board of Directors take such action as is necessary to implement this request. The committee reviewed a Preliminarv schedule for 1981 One Design iacing. The first race will be sched.uled foi MaY 23,1981, and the last regular race will be scheduled for September 26. The committee also pioposed a special event to be sailed by the fleet chamPions of each fleet in one class of boat on
Sunday, September 27, 1981. Details for thal special event will be worked
sored by the Chicago Yacht Club, the YC will administer the MHS rule, as was done in 1980. The new race Plan decided uPon at the meeting is that there will be a Chicago Off Shore ChamPionshiP in the S[ring and the Fall-Pre and post Mackinac. Boats qualifying in either of the two series will race in the final series to be held after the Tri-State. All races will be CYC sponsored. Boats that win 'l-2-3 in their section will qualify for the final series. Prizes will be awarded for the f inal 12-3 places; awarded on an overall time basis bY the rating rule. Jerry O'Neill and his Committee have put this plan together' At this time ii's a general format, conceptual, but it has a firm sound. Mark Landwer, Chairman,/Dixie Dowrie
out at a later meeting of the committee. The committee reviewed the draft of the 1981 Off Shore schedule. lt appeared that a possible conflict ex-
isted between the ProPosed One Design schedule and the Off Shore schelule with respect to four dates. The committee agreed to re-schedule races to SundaYs on three of those dates and to request that the
final Off Shore schedule be changed to ref lect the conflict with the One Design schedule. The chairman of the iace committee will be advised
of this request. The committee also discussed a orooosed race weekend schedule ior. July 3, 4 and 5. lndividual fleets will-have the opportunity of scheduling three or five races in connection'with that race week schedule. Details are to be worked out at a later meeting.
