Dear Club Members and Race to Mackinac Participants: On behalf of Chicago Yacht Club, I would like to welcome all participants and fans of the 110th running of the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, presented by Wintrust. The 333-mile classic is a “bucket list” distance race that attracts sailors from all over the world. Please join me in experiencing this race which will leave you with memories that will last a lifetime. Whether it’s your first Mac or your 25th, I wish you a good, safe trip to the Island. I would like to thank everyone that has helped make this event happen. Without the hard work of our army of dedicated volunteers throughout the entire year, the Mac would not be possible. A special thanks to Race to Mackinac Committee Chair, Sarah Renz, and the rest of her outstanding team for spending countless hours to ensure this regatta runs flawlessly. And many thanks to our amazing yacht club staff, both on the water and off. This special edition of the Blinker is the Official Race Program and covers everything you need to know about the race. The boating season in Chicago has already begun, and what a season it is so far! Our fleets are busy planning and participating in some really great events. We are also hosting some events to give back to the community. Our Chicago Yacht Club members are remarkable! Indeed, our members are what makes this experience so special. In this issue of the Blinker you will read more about some of what is going on at the club. At Chicago Yacht Club we all have one common passion – the water. Whether you love cruising in a sailboat or powerboat, racing around the buoys or long distance, participating in predicted log competitions, volunteering on race committee, racing model yachts, or just casually cruising around the harbors, we are one Club with something for everyone who loves our amazing lake. Please join me this summer in celebrating our great natural resource. I look forward to seeing you on the water and in the Club. Respectfully,
BELMONT STATION STAFF On the Water Director, Jay Kehoe Keelboat Director & Belmont Dockmaster, Peter Hoglund Regatta Manager, Elizabeth Dust Adult Sailing Education Director, Dave Gerber Belmont Administrator, Ellen Schwartz

From the Race Chair… Welcome! It’s time to kick off the 110th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac. Are you ready? If not, grab your crew and get to work as we have an amazing race ahead! The Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust will commence at the Warning Gun party on Thursday, July 18th on the terrace of Chicago Yacht Club, with delicious hors d’oeuvres thanks to our CYC Staff & GM, Dwight Jenson, and cocktails - cheers to our supporting sponsors. Let’s toast to the safe passage of fellow sailors as our fearless On The Water team, Jay Kehoe and Libbi Dust, sound off the Warning Gun. Please be sure to thank the Coast Guard who will escort us up Lake Michigan, and the Race Committee who will greet you with a resounding hello by sound of a cannon off Windemere Point as you finish. Members of the Mackinac Committee, CYC Staff, shore crew or as a competitor - you have given this great offshore challenge countless hours of preparation. Thank you. Please be sure to embrace the beauty of your course. Whether you’re headed along the Wisconsin shore for cheese and cell service, straight up the rhumb line to Sleeping Bear Dunes, or in your land yacht headed to the Porch Party at The Grand Hotel, take care of your people, respect the water (and the freighters), and enjoy the view! Sailors - We are blessed to be racing on a lake that promises every sailing condition before you reach the Mackinac Bridge. And don’t stop before you get there. If you’re safe - Push on! Your friends and family are glued to the Tracker, questioning every tack, or cross. I hope to see you on the podium at the Tuesday’s Awards Celebration, highlighted by new musical entertainment that will knock your flops off. Most importantly, I want to thank the volunteers who work diligently behind the scenes, and the supportive leadership of Commodore Sigmond and his fellow Flag Officers. And to my family, Mark, Grace & Will for appreciating the water and sharing in the passion for the sport of sailing. It gives me great pleasure to welcome you and personally thank you for coming. I will be at Chicago Yacht Club and on Mackinac Island and look forward to personally meeting and warmly welcoming each and every one of you. Be smart, sail safe and relish the ride! Sincerely, Sarah Renz Chairman, 110th CYC Race to Mackinac

RACE PREVIEW:
110th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac By Matt Gallagher
When over 315 boats cross the start line on July 20th & 21st this year in the 110th running of the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust, they will become part of a proud tradition. A tradition that looks nature straight in the eyes and never backs down – all the way up Lake Michigan. From its humble beginnings with a five-boat fleet in 1898, the Mac has become one of the largest and most prestigious sailboat races in the world. With conditions varying from dead calms to furious storms – sometimes over the course of a single race, and sometimes a single day - the Mac has truly grown to become America’s offshore challenge. The approximately 2,500 sailors from around the world who set forth this July will join a long list of thousands more who have taken on the challenge – including names of elite sailors like Conner and Turner, Enright and Towill, Hutchinson and Canfield, as well as less well-known but equally competitive sailors who make the Mac the highlight of their summer. In 2017’s race, the fleet of 296 boats that started the race truly learned what it meant to be a part of America’s offshore challenge. With extreme conditions on both ends of the spectrum –severe storms with too much wind and doldrums with no wind – the fleet faced everything nature could throw at it. Nearly 1/3 of the fleet retired from the race due to damage or illness of crew members. Nearly all of those boats are returning to face nature again in 2018, along with many new entrants. The 333-statute mile course (289 nautical miles) from Chicago to Mackinac Island, MI is wide open, and competitors can choose any course up the lake to the finish. Racers will choose a course based on the unique characteristics of their boats and the weather conditions they face (primarily wind) as they attempt to cross the finish line as fast as possible. Along the way, they’ll pass the monumental landmarks of the race as many before have—places like Point Betsie, Sleeping Bear Dunes, the Manitous, Grays Reef, and, of course, the iconic

Mackinac Bridge. Truly, the Mac has a beauty to it, to which no other offshore race in the world can compare. Upon arrival at Mackinac Island, the racers are greeted with the smells of fudge and horses and views of the Grand Hotel. While Mackinac Island is an oasis for sailors who have battled for days, it’s also where the reckoning takes place. At the end of the day, who battled Lake Michigan the best and takes home the silver? The Mac, like many offshore races, is raced under the Offshore Racing Rule, or ORR, a handicap rule that allows boats of different designs to race fairly against one another. A correction factor is applied to the time it takes each competitor to finish the race, and the boat with the lowest corrected time wins. The boats race in three major divisions, with the majority of the fleet in the monohull Racing Division which starts Saturday, July 21. Multihull racing boats also start on Saturday July 21, and the Cruising Division, comprised of monohull cruiser-racers, starts a day earlier on July 20. The Racing Division features monohull boats from 29’ long up to 86’ long, with crews as small as five sailors and as large as 22. The Racing Division is divided in half, with the larger boats racing for the Mackinac Cup and the smaller boats for the Mackinac Trophy. (These trade places each year, so in 2019, the large boats will be racing for the Mackinac Trophy and the small boats for the Mackinac Cup). Wizard, a Reichel/Pugh 74, owned by David & Peter Askew from Bayview Yacht Club, is defending its title in the big-boat division. “[2017] was a great race for us,” said Charlie Enright, a crew member on Wizard and currently skipper of Vestas 11th Hour Ocean Racing in the Volvo Ocean Race. “Despite the variety of different weather conditions, we were able to come out with a successful result.” Others sure to be competitive include Windquest, owned by Doug Devos of Macatawa Bay Yacht Club, and the numerous GL70s, including Bill Martin’s Stripes (Bayview Yacht Club). Yet, since weather of the Mac is
so variable, contenders always will include the many boats racing in their ORR sections, as well as boats in the onedesign fleets like the J/120s, Beneteau 40.7s, and J/111s. TOA, the 2017 winner of the small boat division, is back again in 2018. Chicago Yacht Club members Bruce Danly and Jim Mitchell are the owners of TOA. Said Mitchell about the 2017 race, “This was the race of a lifetime, definitely one for the books. Our crew worked hard and made the dream come true.” TOA faces stiff competition in 2018 from many boats such as three-time winner Providence, owned by past CYC Commodore Greg Miarecki and his father, Jerry Miarecki. Numerous one-design racers in fleets such as Beneteau 36.7s, J/105s, J/109s, Level 35s, and T-10s, plus many racers in sections racing under ORR will also vie for the prize. Over 40 boats will start in the Cruising Division on Friday, July 20. Trois Vignes, owned by John Palmer of the Macatawa Bay Yacht Club, was last year’s winner of the Vannena Cup for best corrected time in the Cruising Division. The Cruising Division, the newest division in the Race, is also the source of much of the growth in the number of boats sailing the Mac. 2017 Multihull winner Arete, owned by Rick Warner of Port Huron Yacht Club, also won the SuperMac, a race held occasionally from Chicago all the way to Pt. Huron, MI. This year’s race features a smaller, but still competitive, section of multihull boats which, if conditions are right, will fly up the lake. The Royono Trophy is awarded to the first monohull boat to cross the finish line. In past years, all racing boats (monohull and multihull) competed for this trophy, but in 2018 it is returning to its roots as a trophy for monohull boats in the Racing Division. The multihull Arete won the Royono last year, but this year the competition among large, fast monohull boats will be intense. Joe Haas, Chicago Yacht Club Member and past Commodore took the first-to-finish trophy for the cruising division, the Ile Aux Galets Trophy, in Infinite Diversion. The Race would not be possible without the hundreds of dedicated volunteers, most of whom are Chicago Yacht Club
members, and the incredible professional staff of the Chicago Yacht Club. Collectively, volunteers and staff put in thousands of hours of time year-round to make the Mac the incredible experience it is, both on the water and on land in Chicago and Mackinac. We’d like to highlight a couple of the people who make the race possible. Long-time racer, Mac Committee member, and race committee volunteer Lloyd Karzen is the heart and soul of Island operations for the Mac race. The race would not be possible without him. He is the first member of our team to arrive on the Island, and the last to leave. Whether it’s setting up the trailer, getting the docks ready, or playing general troubleshooter, Lloyd is what makes the Island work for the thousands of us who arrive at the Island each July. Working with Lloyd is CYC’s On-the-Water Director, Jay Kehoe. Jay, fresh off of running on-the-water operations for the 35th America’s Cup, brings a wealth of experience to planning and executing the race. He somehow fits 270 boats into a harbor designed for 70 on the Island. All racers and fans are in debt to Jay and Lloyd and the many other volunteers and staff who make this race possible each year. The Mac Race’s commitment to safety can be seen in every action and every decision made during the course of the year. In addition to putting hundreds of sailors through safety training annually and communicating a message of safety to our sailors, the Mac is a nationwide leader in drafting and adopting safety equipment regulations for offshore sailing. The US Sailing Safety Equipment Requirements, used nationally, are based on the Chicago Mac Safety Regulations developed and in use here in the Great Lakes for over a decade. Our organization’s goal is to have everyone race fast AND safely to the Island. Finally, a word of thanks to our sponsors. Without the sponsors who support this race, it would not be possible to bring America’s offshore challenge to the thousands who participate each year. We are grateful for the strong support of Presenting Sponsor Wintrust, as well as the many other sponsors who support our sport and our Race with such enthusiasm.

Top Ten Boats to Watch In America’s Offshore Challenge 1. Meat (Brian Kennalley, Edward Mui & Craig Roehl,
Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club) – Fresh off their impressive win in the 2017 US Offshore Championship in Annapolis, the Tartan 10 Meat will look to continue its success back home in Chicago and return to the podium. Featuring a crew whose average age is 33 and is over 70 percent female, Meat is a great amateur team in the alwayscompetitive T-10 fleet – one of the largest fleets of offshore one-designs racing in the Mac.
2. Merlin (Chip Merlin, St. Petersburg Yacht Club) –
Designed by one of the most innovative men in the history of yacht design, Legendary West Coast sled Merlin owned the record for the Transpac Race for an incredible 20 years. New owner Chip Merlin’s family and crew will arrive in Chicago directly after competing in the Newport to Bermuda Race this June, and they will be joined by CYCRTM Chairperson Sarah Renz for the run to Mackinac Island. Will the Merlins rise to the challenge aboard Merlin? How will this classic flyer fare against the tough, similarlysized GL-70 sled fleet? We’ll know soon!
3. Wizard (David & Peter Askew, Bayview Yacht Club). The defending 2017 Mac big-boat division winner is 74’ of power and efficiency. With their incredible class victory ‘Down-Under’ in the prestigious Rolex Sydney Hobart Race (aboard a 70-footer also called Wizard), Maryland-based brothers Peter and David return with their Reichel-Pugh mini-maxi Wizard to take on the fastest boats in the fleet. With a crew featuring numerous Hobart Race, Volvo Ocean Race, and America’s Cup veterans, the Askews likely have their eyes on an even bigger prize –the overall winner’s trophy.
4. Warrior 53 (Warrior Sailing Program) – The wildly
successful Warrior Sailing Program is expanding its outreach and racing opportunities to the Great Lakes in 2018, and the Mac, America’s Offshore Challenge is the centerpiece of the summer’s exciting program. The Warrior program provides maritime education, sailing, and racing outreach to wounded, ill, and injured service members and veterans of the US Armed Forces. pro sailors, Warrior 53’s crew includes eight Warrior Program graduates who will work and race aboard the 53’ racer for the entire month of July and gain valuable skills both on and off the water. Don’t think they are here just to get experience – both the veterans and the pros are loaded with winning experience and the kind of perseverance and toughness than only soldiers have.
5. TOA (Bruce Danly & Jim Mitchell, Chicago Yacht Club) – This well-sailed J/109 is back to defend her 2017 overall victory in the small boat division with a new sail configuration that should increase performance with a minimal impact to the rating. Winning the CYCRTM takes great sailing, excellent preparation, and a big dose of luck, but Mitchell and Danly are adding a hefty dose of science and design to their tool bag to try to win the 2018 edition. 6. Il Mostro (Peter & Christopher Thornton, Chicago Yacht Club) – After setting a new Chicago-to-Mackinac outright (non-race) record last October, the Thorntons are back with their fan-favorite Volvo 70 Il Mostro to try to repeat their feat during this July’s CYCRTM. They’ll need an incredible amount of luck to break their own record, but as one of the quickest boats in the fleet with a stellar crew, Il Mostro is always in the running for line honors and more.
7. Infinity (Jim Grant, Michigan City Yacht Club) – Jim Grant found this classic 1969-built Islander 37 abandoned in a boatyard in 2005. Lovingly restored from its derelict state by the owner and crew, Infinity is swaddled in sails, cushions, and deck covers that have all been hand-sewn by the crew. If a crew’s passion and love for their yacht can help propel it to victory, look for big things from this Michigan City-based team. 8. Entourage II (Michael Dannecker, Chicago Yacht Club) - Local standout Dannecker joins the fray of the small sportboats with his entry into the resurgent group of 1D35 owners racing throughout the Midwest. With a lifetime of high-level one-design racing in J/24s, Etchells, and many more, Dannecker adds numerous CYC Associate members to his crew to help the Entourage II make a great showing on the island.

9. Flash Gordon 6 (Helmut & Evan Jahn, Chicago Yacht Club) – They’ve won
everything a sailor can win in the ultra-competitive Farr 40 Class, and this multiple World and National Champion father/son duo will go after yet another victory against seven identical boats in the 2018 Mac. With Chicago hosting the international Farr 40 World Championship in October, the fleet is firing on all cylinders. The Jahn boys and their crew are looking to make an emphatic statement to every Farr 40 competitor that Lake Michigan is their turf.
10. Denali^3 (William McKinley, Little Traverse Yacht Club). A brand-new Ker 46+, Denali “Cubed” is yet another in a long line of beautifully-designed and well-sailed Denali boats from longtime racer Bill McKinley. Designed by speed-obsessed Jason Ker and built by the high-tech McConaghy yard, the newest Denali is a purpose-built racing machine crewed by some of Michigan’s best racers. McKinley has had success in many racing machines over the years, but will Denali be able to conquer the mountain that is the Mac--America’s Offshore Challenge? Blinker | Summer 2018

The two-day version has the added benefit of hands on training with life rafts and personal safety equipment in a swimming pool.
Don’t keep it a secret! When something goes pear shaped, ask for help. Whether it’s a person in the water, fire, hull breach or injury you should be hailing emergency responders on VHF Channel 16. In a calm, clear voice you need to tell them a few things: 1) Position – be as specific as possible (GPS Coordinates) 2) People – how many on your boat 3) Nature of your emergency 4) Description of your boat – be as detailed as possible!

MACKINAC ISLAND:
Also the perfect weekend
If you think Mackinac Island is just a destination for the Mac Race, think again! TripAdvisor just named Mackinac Island the #1 summer travel destination in the US for 2018. Known for its fudge shops lining Main Street and The Grand Hotel, the island offers charming Victorian architecture and feel, taking you back in time. There are many wonderful things to see and do making it a perfect romantic weekend for couples or a weekend filled with history and fun for families. By Rose Mills “Where we’re going, we don’t need roads”:
“The good old horse-and-buggy days”:
Getting to the island, take the Mackinac Island Ferry from Mackinaw City or St. Ignace. If you’re coming by car, you will drive to either city, park your car and hop on Shepler’s Ferry or Starline Ferry, which depart daily during season. Sit back and enjoy the 30-minute ferry ride!
With over 70 miles of trails and history, there is no better way to see and get around the island!
“Bicycle! Bicycle! I want to ride my bicycle!”: Why not enjoy the scenery while also getting some quality exercise? The island is pretty flat making the ride less strenuous than you think. The best part? You’ll have a water view for the entire 8-mile ride! TIP! Stop at Daud’s Grocer, located across from the Visitor’s Center, to pick up picnic supplies for a beautiful picnic during your bike ride. Fun fact: Daud’s claims to be the oldest family-operated grocery store in America!

1. Carriage Tour: Taking a carriage tour offers a great history lesson, scenic highlights of the island and the opportunity to sit back and relax on a horse-drawn carriage! Your tour can be public, private or your own drive-yourself carriage ride. 2. Taxi Service: Horse drawn taxi carriages are dispatched 24 hours a day, available at your convenience to take you to your destinations across the island. TIP! With over 500 horses on the island for transportation, you will see and smell manure so just grin and bear it by taking in the beauty of the island!
“I’m not really a tourist-attraction kind of guy”:
“I’m so hungry...and thirsty!”:
The island has so much history and beauty, so allow yourself the opportunity to just be a tourist!
If you want a fancy, white tablecloth dinner (like my husband says), live music or just drinks, Mackinac Island offers something for all:
1. Fort Mackinac: Once occupied by 18th century British Red Coats and 19th century American soldiers, this historic military compound offers history through military demonstrations, tours and activities. TIP! During the Race to Mackinac, enjoy lunch at the Fort Terrace Cafe which gives you a great vantage point to see the boats finishing the race! 2. Mackinac Art Museum: Let the art and photography displayed tell you the story of the island. 3. Historic Downtown Mackinac Island: Visit historic structures of the island including The American Fur Company & Retail Store depicting a time when Mackinac Island was the center of the American Fur Trade almost 200 years ago. 4. Arch Rock: One of the most famous geological rock formations, it forms THE perfect eye-hole of Lake Huron, not to mention THE perfect photograph.
1. The Carriage House at the Iroquois Hotel: An island favorite overlooking the Mackinac Island waterfront serving classic American cuisine. 2. Pink Pony in the Chippewa Hotel: One of the island’s most popular restaurants, bars and music venues. The incredible lake views and trendy cocktails make it the perfect place to hang out after an afternoon discovering the island! 3. The Woods Restaurant at The Grand Hotel: Offers a casual dining experience that is unique...you can also test your bowling skills at America’s oldest operating duckpin bowling alley! 4. Reserve at Mission Point: Reserve offers a wide selection of wines, charcuterie boards and artisan cheeses that you build yourself! 5. Horn’s Gaslight Bar & Restaurant: Tunes and tacos…. enough said!
So, if you’re there for the Mac Race or just want a perfect weekend this summer, Mackinac Island offers you the perfect getaway. And I’m warning you now... you will not leave the island without sampling the fudge! Enjoy!

Double Goat: Remarkable Life Achievement By Robert J. Weisen, Co-Chair Double Goat Honor Roll Committee Chicago Yacht Club Member Since 1972
It all started in 1898 with the first sailboat race to Mackinac Island from Chicago. Since that historic event, over 770,000 sailors have eagerly set out to Mackinac Island within two annual sailing events, one starting from Chicago and one starting from Port Huron, Michigan. Of this extraordinary number of participants, only forty-six avid sailors have achieved Double Goat status, thereby earning the right to have their names engraved on the Double Goat Honor Roll Trophy, one displayed in the Chicago Yacht Club, sponsor of the Chicago Mackinac Race, and an identical trophy displayed in the Bayview Yacht Club, Detroit, sponsor of the Bayview Mackinac Race. But what is a Double Goat one may ask? To start, a Goat is a sailor inductee member of the Island Goats Sailing Society, Chicago, having raced in a minimum of 25 Chicago Mackinac Races; or, a sailor inductee member of the Society of Mackinac Island Old Goats, Detroit, having raced in a minimum of 25 Bayview Mackinac Races. An inductee member of one society or the other is thereafter affectionally known as a “Goat.” An inductee member of both societies is thereafter affectionally known as a “Double Goat.” To be a Goat of either one of these preeminent sailing societies is an unimageable 25-year minimum undertaking assuming all races are accomplished in consecutive years. Now think about what a sailor must set out as a goal in life at a relatively youthful age to be a Double Goat, which would thus require a minimum of 50 total Mackinac races, equally distributed among the two annual sailboat racing events. In any segment of our lives but particularly in the world of sports, what a commitment a sailor makes to accomplish these goals! Double Goats will also attribute gratitude and appreciation for the allowance of time and patience given to the sailor by the Double Goat’s spouse, children and loved ones. When one thinks in these simple human terms, being a Double Goat is a truly remarkable life achievement. 39 Blinker | Summer 2018

The 2018 Cruising Sail Fleet Season
By Eric Moore, Chair Cruising Sail Fleet
Off the water events: • The Cruising Sail Fleet started the year off with “Meet the Fleet”, CSF’s premier off the water event. CYC members Gus and Carol Hancock spoke of their 13-year live aboard sailing adventure to the U.S. east coast, South America, and finally the Mediterranean Sea. A unique adventure it was – from hot air ballooning over the desert to attending a camel wrestling competition (who would have guessed there was such a thing) in Turkey! • Also, on the calendar is our Friday night presentation/discussions. So far this season we have heard topics ranging from “Cruising Croatia” to “Critical Diesel Engine Know How”. The discussions are based on group interests and we always welcome suggestions. • Finishing up the year we will have our Season End Celebration and our Christmas Party.
• On August 28th, we host the SOS Children’s Village. This organization serves foster kids providing the opportunity for siblings to live together in the same home and is one of the beneficiaries of the Chicago Regatta. In addition to raising money for the SOS Village via the Chicago Regatta, the CSF wants to provide the kids with a personal on the water experience they won’t forget!
Cruises and on the water social events • The CSF 2018 cruise schedule includes a variety of distance sails from short hops to lake crossings. Our first cruise is up the lakeshore 45 nm to Kenosha. Next, we join the other CYC Fleets on the 12 nm cruise to Hammond. Our long cruise, 85 nm, is to Holland in August. We finish up the season with our shortest cruise (extremely short if one’s boat is moored there) to Belmont. So, you might say when it comes to cruising we have something for everyone!
Charity cruises:
• Besides our destination cruises we also do informal sails every 3rd Saturday of the month as the calendar permits.
• This year we have two charity cruises on the calendar! We are anticipating taking out approximately 80 passengers for each of these charity cruises.
• Lastly, we have our Ladies Skipper Race open to all lady skippers. The race is a fun non-spinnaker event with a casual race format!
• On June 26th, we host the PALs organization. It serves kids with Down Syndrome providing them with a memorable summer camp experience. In the past years, the CSF cruise has been one of the highlights of their summer!
See the full CSF calendar in the Cruising Sail Fleet’s section of the Chicago Yacht Club website and visit the Club’s calendar for event details and to register. See you at the docks or out on the water!

Chicago Regatta Preview
By Greg Miarecki, Chicago Regatta Chair
On Saturday, September 8th, Chicago Yacht Club members and friends in the boating community will come together to make a difference in the lives of Chicago’s kids. Through the Chicago Yacht Club’s Chicago Regatta, presented by Wintrust, the Club will raise money for the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, SOS Illinois Villages, and the Chicago Yacht Club Foundation. In 2017, the Chicago Regatta raised over $80,000. This year’s Chicago Regatta events will begin on Tuesday, August 28th, when our Cruising Sail Fleet will host a sailing adventure for the kids of SOS Illinois Villages. SOS kids will visit the Club for dinner at Monroe Station, and take a short cruise along Chicago’s lakefront. The Chicago Regatta itself will feature seven different events: • A radio-controlled boat race for our growing DF65 fleet • A buoy race for selected one-design boats • A distance race for offshore racing boats
45 Blinker | Summer 2018
• A casual race for cruisers and newer racers • A poker run for power boaters • An exciting regatta for M-32 catamarans, one of the hottest new classes in sailing today • An epic post-race party at Monroe Station, complete with a silent auction, live music from Chicago’s famous Blue Roots band and a fabulous buffet from Chef Larry Please make plans to join us on Saturday, September 8th. Onwater events are free to all members and guests, but we hope you will consider a donation to one or more of our worthy charities. Visit www.chicagoregatta.com to learn more, to register for the on-water events and post-race party, and to donate. If you’d like to be a regatta sponsor, or donate a silent auction item, please e-mail the Chicago Regatta Chair, Past Commodore Greg Miarecki at greg@miarecki.org. We look forward to seeing many Mac Racers at the Chicago Regatta!

DragonForce 65: RACE DAY
By Daniel Burns & Alina Dix If you haven’t heard, Chicago Yacht Club is the new home of an ever-growing fleet: the DragonForce 65. You may have seen more and more of these remote-control boats milling about. Maybe even racing. To date, this fleet has had two series, workshops, and a few standalone regattas. So, what does a typical race day look like for this fleet? First, from a management side, we try to keep things simple and fun. However, we do have rules, specifically Appendix E of the Races Rules of Sailing. The great thing about these boats is that we don’t have to be outside to sail. If the weather is too cold or raining, we can operate from inside the Club. However, on nice days, you’ll see us crowding the back deck at Belmont or the patio wall at Monroe. The one-lap courses are generally short and set up relatively close to the competitors for better visibility. We rarely adjust the courses for wind shifts and leave it to the competitor to navigate the course. Now for the starts...blink and you might miss it! It’s a prerecorded two-minute audio file with an attention signal at the two minutes and the warning signal at one minute to the start. The sequence is played over two Bluetooth speakers. It’s simple and allows our Race Committee volunteers to just concentrate on the start and calling out “over-earlies.” After the start, we sail up to the windward mark with an offset and then back down to finish. Races typically last 7-10 minutes and we generally have a goal of sailing 10 races. It’s a short race window and sometimes the starts/finishes get a bit frantic and we’re lucky to have such a stellar Race Committee that never misses a finisher.

Chicago Yacht Club and the T-10: Forty Years of Fun By Michael Platzke
In March 1978 hull #1 of a new boat rolled off the production line of Tartan Marine in Grand Falls, Ohio. Born on the Great Lakes, the Tartan Ten (aka T-10) sailboat would go on to become one of the dominant one-design racing classes on Lake Michigan and its rich history would be closely intertwined with Chicago Yacht Club. Chicago Yacht Club member Lindy Thomas is considered the father of the Chicago T-10 fleet and was the first T-10 class president. His boat, Goblin, won three T-10 midwinter championships and captured the T-10 North American Championship in 1988. In 1978, Chicago Yacht Club member and Olympic sailor Dick Stearns on Glider was the first T-10 North American Champion. He also went on to capture the 1980 NAC title and his son, Richard, won the same title 19 years later. Other Chicago Yacht Club T-10 NAC winners include Mark Wurtzebach on Susan in 1982, 1984 and 1987 and Don Wilson on Convergence in 2014. Chicago Yacht Club has hosted the T-10 North American Championships four times; 1988, 2002 (47 boats!), 2008 and 2014. For 40 years, Chicago Yacht Club has played a significant role in the T-10 fleet and in turn, the Club has been enriched by members who love sailing this classic boat. Commodore Leif Sigmond, (Norboy) is past president of the T-10 class association and Secretary Rick Lillie races on his T-10 (Waterworks). Current T-10 class president is member John Schellenbach (Mutiny) and the Chicago fleet captain is Chicago Yacht Club member Mark Croll (Retention). After those many years, the T-10 class still turns out some of the largest fleets for the signature Chicago Yacht Club events. It’s likely that there will be Chicago Yacht Club sailors racing T-10’s around the buoys or up to Mac for years to come.

The Summer CYC Junior Racing Season Is Upon Us! By Tatia Torrey
Our CYC Junior Racing program consists of Lasers, 420s and Optis. The Lasers and 420s teams are high school students (and a few 8th graders) and our Opti racers are ages 9-13. In the shoulder seasons our junior racers prepare for their busy summer season. Our booming scholastic program, with over 100 students from 5 local high schools – New Trier, Latin, Walter Payton, Hinsdale and St Ignatius, competing in Lasers and 420s. The racers sail for their respective schools from Labor Day through the first week of November and again from early March through Memorial Day; participating in multiple regattas across the Midwest. This year we set a club record and had all 5 teams qualify for Nationals in either fleet or team racing. From these sailors, our coaches, including our Head Coach, Matt Peter, nominated the team of Aisling Sullivan and Lolly Vasilion to compete as the Helly Hanson Youth team in the NOOD Regatta, scheduled in Chicago June 8-10th. This race will determine qualifications for the J70 Jr Youth Championship in St Petersburg, FL in November. They will compete against Ray and Bridget Groble, competing a second time as a junior team in the NOOD. Our Opti program comprises of 10-15 sailors in Green – RWB fleets; they compete in the shoulder season across a number of events. Three sailors from our Opti fleet qualified to represent Team USA; to compete internationally over the summer. Peter Barnard will compete in the North American Championship in 51 Blinker | Summer 2018
Mexico, Christian Pendergast will travel to Mynamar and Annie Samis will travel to Belgium. Heading into summer, our sailing school will welcome hundreds of sailors from age 7 through high school, beginner to advanced, to participate in a variety of boating activities to everything from introduction to the water to competitive sailing. As we introduce new young interest in the club, we also continue to grow a competitive junior race team. Over the summer our travel race teams, 420, Laser and Optis will compete in a variety of events in the Midwest and across the U.S. over the summer. Our Laser team will head to the West Coast to compete at Hood River Gorge; our 420 teams will head East and race from Massachusetts to Martha’s Vineyard and our Opti teams will compete in Pensacola, FL at the Opti Nationals in July. All of this culminates in the CYC Junior Race week during the first week of August. This is an event you do not want to miss. We kick it off with Buoy Racing at Belmont on August 4th and 5th, followed by a Mini Mac race on August 6th from Belmont to Monroe, leading into the Skyline Series to end the season. Hats off to the dedicated team, including our Sailing Director Dave Gerber for creating, supporting and growing a program of future sailors and racers.
