2019 CHICAGO YACHT CLUB VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP FLAG OFFICERS
I had the pleasure of reading a book on a recent business trip named “Blue Mind” by notable biologist Dr. Wallace J. Nichols. What struck me was the implicit and horribly kept secret that many of us who spend time boating all too well- Being on the water IS the place to be. The blue mind, Wallace says, separates us from the pressures and distractions of life, which he refers to as “red mind.” Having a blue mind lessens the stresses of the day and gives us a break from our overstimulated lives. It made me contemplate how special our club is- being so close to the water and how the friendships we make here at the club enrichen our lives. It reminded me of why Chicago Yacht Club is Chicago’s doorstep to a new world- our Lake Michigan.

As we embark on this journey together, it is an honor and pleasure to serve as the Commodore of Chicago Yacht club. We are an amazing community here at the end of Monroe and Belmont avenues, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Regardless of whether you are a new or lifelong member, the community we build here at Chicago Yacht Club has something for everyone. If you are new- We welcome you and encourage you to get involved and make the most of your club membership. If you are a returning member, re-engage in one of the many committees or activities at the club. We look forward to seeing you all down here at the club. The 2019 boating season will be opening here soon and there are many ways for you to get out on the water. For that next generation, our sailing school program registration is open and filling up fast- share with family and friends and encourage them to enroll their school aged children in the program. For our members wishing to sharpen their OTW skills- We have many opportunities to grow your proficiency on the water through safety classes, Crew-U, WOW and our Sonar fleet. New this year, we are kicking off a new program with our TOM 28 fleet for season charter, corporate team building and match racing, please visit the OTW website for more information. Our various fleets have a full season of events planned for the year from weekend cruises to dock parties and the annual cruise- there are many, many ways to engage, reconnect and get your dose of ‘aqua therapy’. I am happy to announce that the club has signed on as a Supporting club for the Stars and Stripes America’s Cup campaign where our member Taylor Canfield and Mike Buckley will be forming a challenger for the fabled trophy that hinges on the entire sailing and boating community for its success. In the pages that follow, you will read about the many activities that you and your fellow members have been up to, it is symbolic that Our time at the club is woven together like the fine tapestry of great quilt which makes up your club- Chicago’s Club, Our Chicago Yacht Club. Lastly, I am honored to serve alongside a great team of flag officers and friends that have put in a lot of time to making sure that CYC is successful- Nick Berberian, Dwain Lutzow, Rick Lillie and Louis Rosenthal, as well as our general manager, Dwight Jenson. We have many great things planned for the club, and we are very passionate about its future success. It is both an honor and pleasure to serve as your Commodore for the next two years. See you on the water,
Lou Sandoval, Commodore sandoval@chicagoyachtclub.org

Celebrating and Exploring Culture with WOW By Sonia Sandoval
This year one of the themes for the Women’s Committee is celebrating and exploring culture to build community by fostering inclusivity. The Women’s Committee kicked off the year by celebrating Chinese New Year. We have fun and also learn nautical skills in an environment supportive of varying skill levels.
Our first lecture series session was a panel of Women Pioneers titled “Lady Goats”. The panel was moderated by Janet Baxter and consisted of Race to Mackinac female Island Goats (with at least 25 races under their belt) Jan Promer, Alice Martin, and Suzy Phelps. Each of them had a unique story to tell about their path to the water and their passion for the ‘Mac’. We had a mixed audience from sailing novices to lifetime sailors. Thank you to all the panelists and to all who participated and to Janet Baxter who did a phenomenal job of moderating our panel of ‘Island Goats’.

If you’re looking to have fun, connect with the women of CYC and learn, we invite you to join us for our upcoming events and invite a friend. The Sonar Sailing Series is a great way to get on the water on our club fleet of sonar sailboats to learn the basics of sailing or improve your skills. Our WOW Sailing Series begins on Thursday, May 9th at 6 p.m. and is held on select Thursdays’ through August 29th at Belmont. To register and for more information please visit the CYC website. Lastly, SAVE THE DATE for the Annual Ladies’ Luncheon on May 1st featuring Maria Pinto and her M2057 Collection. Maria Pinto is a Chicago fashion designer with a client list of notable celebrities. The day will begin with shopping, fashion consultations, and a Q&A session with Maria Pinto complemented by Chef Larry’s culinary creations and great camaraderie. A portion of the proceeds of the sales will go the Chicago Yacht Club Foundation to help extend the sport of sailing to underserved communities. Whether you are a seasoned sailor, a power boater or new to the club looking to grow your experience on the water - we invite you to join us at one of our WOW events!

Getting to Know Colleen King
By Jane Vartan
Colleen has been an Associate member for a little over two years now, and a very active one. “I’ve been very fortunate to participate in several different activities! Between last year and this year I’ve been excited to be a part of the Stations, Belmont Planning, and Finance committees. I was also part of the Neill Clinic committee last year and WOW events. I think getting involved in different committees is a great way to get more involved in different aspects of the Club.” Colleen initially became interested in on the water activities during her freshman year at the University of Notre Dame. Colleen’s roommate was heading to the first sailing club meeting and asked her if she wanted to join her. Colleen said, “It was the best decision I made in college! I ended up attending practice every day, then becoming more involved with leadership roles, moving from Vice Commodore to Commodore.” So far, a highlight of Colleen’s exciting times she had on the water was during her junior year racing in Galveston, Texas at the Harris Kempner Regatta. “We had such a fun crew of sailors with us and the weather was gorgeous! My skipper and I hadn’t sailed together in a while, since he had been abroad the semester before. We were racing in A’s and the first few races were not our finest, but we started to get back into the groove of things and were soon pulling bullet after bullet. The top teams were sliding up to our boat and asking when we had switched out sailors! Our team racing in B’s were rotating between skipper and crew positions, none with any particularly great racing experience up to that point and it was so much fun hearing the tactical positions they had tried out in their races. We had a great time, such a fun regatta weekend!” Colleen (pictured left on bottom left photo) found it easiest to make friends at the Club through joining the Race Committee, who were very welcoming people and a great way to start out. She admitted she was not the most active member her first year. “But I ended up being lucky enough to make it onto the Stations committee, which helped me meet so many new and friendly people! I also started going to the WOW events and met so many incredible women that way.”
