FROM THE HELM

DEAR CLUB MEMBERS:

Welcome to the 114th running of the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust!

The oldest and longest freshwater race in the world attracts sailors and fans from around the country and the world. Competitors range from first time racers to “Double Goats.” Many crew members are families that race together. Other crews are made up of life-long friends or even work colleagues. All look forward every year to a most exciting competition on the ever-changing and often unpredictable Great Lakes. Memories will be made!

In addition to the Race, all the traditional events return. The Warning Gun Party is a highlight of the Club’s social calendar. Those who attend the Porch Party often see the first of the fleet cross under the bridge. We return to Mission Point for the Sailors’ Celebration and awards. Mackinac Island does not disappoint in providing hospitality to family and friends while they await their favorite sailors.

This iconic race could not happen without the hard-working Mackinac Committee, Race Committee, and Chicago Yacht Club Staff. Together, these volunteers and staff members ensure every part of the event on the water and on shore is as close to perfect as possible. Special thanks to Mackinac Committee Chair Sam Veilleux and the dedicated committee members who began planning this year’s Race just after finishing last year’s Race. The countless hours devoted by this team are supported by all of our sponsors, especially our presenting sponsor, Wintrust. Wintrust continues to be a partner not only with respect to this event but also in the Club’s community outreach initiatives.

While we focus on the Mac Race, this edition of the Blinker highlights all the boating season at Chicago Yacht Club. There are regattas, cruising, navigation rallies, and casual racing. The Club offers many opportunities to give back to our community and help others learn about the joy of being on the water. We have Club assets that allow all to get out on the water including Sonars, Tom 28s, the Sea Ray Power Boat along with paddle boards and kayaks. Chicago Yacht Club is truly Our Home on the Water.

I wish all of our racers fair winds, following seas, and safe passage to Mackinac Island, and I look forward to seeing everyone on and off the water.

Sincerely,

SUMMER 2023 ✶ Blinker 4

PLUMM ABOARD!

Over the winter, I had the awesome opportunity to take a trip to Cape Coral, Florida. I was able to sail at Edison Sailing Center in Fort Myers. I enjoyed sailing the Laser and 420s. After the hurricane, everyone was still trying to get back on their feet, and Edison Sailing Center opened in the first week of January. Beach launching was a very foreign thing to me, but after a few fails, I think I've got it down! I had the opportunity to meet some kind sailors.

One of my memories will be one of their coach's famous sailing quotes, "If it ain't broke, it ain't ours!"

I want to thank Stephanie Webb for her generosity in letting me sail with her Florida sailors. I also really enjoyed having Coach Sarah Pederson from Ft. Myers.

I got back home end of February and started back up with CYCs Laser Race Team for the spring season. As the spring season started, to my surprise, I heard coach Flor Cerutti was leaving CYC. I will miss her very much. I wish her well in all of her upcoming adventures!

I look forward to sailing all summer with my Laser team at Belmont station!

It was also exciting that SailGP visited Chicago at Navy Pier. It was very cool to see all the boats race by! I also had the opportunity to meet some of Team USA while they were in town.✶

WELCOME TO THE 114 TH CHICAGO YACHT CLUB RACE TO MACKINAC

PRESENTED BY WINTRUST

On behalf of the Chicago Yacht Club, welcome to the 114th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust.

Last year’s race was one for the history books, and the series of strong storms that met the fleet undoubtedly created memories - and some great sailing storiesthat will last a lifetime for the thousands of racers who crossed the starting line.

As sailors from around the world gather once again on the shore of Lake Michigan, regardless of what the weather has in store for us this year, one thing is certain - all of us lucky enough to participate in this race will soon make our own memories.

We’ll enjoy the 360-degree views of nothing but water. We’ll appreciate the first glimpses of the Michigan shore, the sunsets, the starlit skies and the first light of daybreak. We’ll make that big turn into the Manitou Passage, debating if this might have been the year to go around. We’ll spot the Grays Reef Lighthouse off in the distance. And as we turn into the Straits of Mackinac, we’ll see the Mighty Mac Bridge, with our finish line just off into the distance.

And, in a tradition as old as the Race to Mackinac itself, our experiences throughout that journey will be the basis for stories we tell - most of them true - on the island in the days right after the race, and in places all around the world for many years to come. The navigational decisions. The choice of sail plan. The weather, the wind, the waves.

Whether this is your first race or your 50th, whether you are a boat owner or a crew member, whether you walk on stage at the Sailors’ Celebration to collect an award or sip a drink in the crowd, I want to personally congratulate you on being part of the incredibly special community of sailors who has taken on the Race to Mackinac.

I am looking forward to seeing you all on the starting line just off Chicago’s Navy Pier. And I’m also looking forward to seeing you all 333 miles away, at Mission Point on Tuesday afternoon as we celebrate the 114th running of the famous Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, presented by Wintrust.

As we all make our final preparations and look forward to the race, please join me in thanking everyone who has worked so hard to make this race possible for us all. Without the United States Coast Guard, our race volunteers, our generous sponsors and all our families and supporters, this race is not possible.

See you on the water!

Sincerely,

SEE THE BOATS AT MONROE STATION

In the days leading up to the Race to Mackinac, race boats are docked at Chicago Yacht Club’s Monroe Station at the corner of Lake Shore Drive and Monroe Street in Chicago. Stroll along the Lakeshore Path just north of Monroe Street and see all the action. Other boats are docked at CYC’s Belmont Station in Belmont Harbor, easily visible from the Lakeshore Path north of Belmont Avenue.

SEE THE PARADE OF BOATS FROM NAVY PIER

July 22nd from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. provides a wonderful opportunity to see the boats pass by the east end of Navy Pier on their way to the start. The parade is free and open to the public.

GET READY FOR THE 12 TH ANNUAL CHICAGO REGATTA

The Chicago Regatta sponsored by Wintrust website is up and running. With fundraising starting, I would like to highlight how our fellow yacht club Members can team up to raise a lot of money for our charity partners. What organizations is the Chicago Regatta raising money for? SOS Illinois, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago, and the Chicago Yacht Club Foundation.

HOW CAN OUR FELLOW YACHT CLUB MEMBERS PARTICIPATE?

We have sailing races, a dockside lighted boat display, and a BIG raffle. We are going to have a rocking postrace dock party, with a neighborhood-themed buffet including special desserts from our local supporters. The Sons of Chicago band will once again be jamming on the patio. Once again, we are going to have a wine pull, where participants can buy a chance to win special bottles of wine.

All racing and lighted boat display participants are required to create a Leaderboard Team and compete in the fundraising. Last year, we had a heated competition. The top three fundraising teams will be enshrined forever on the Pinnacle Trophy.

We would like to thank all of last year's Chicago Regatta supporters. We raised more than $170,000 for our charity partners. With your support, we look to expand our reach of participants and raise even more. Please invite your friends to help make this event the premier water-based fundraiser in Chicago.

WE HAVE A NEW FUNDRAISING TOOL

We are proud to present the BIG RAFFLE. This limited ticket sale raffle offers three chances to win. Grand Prize is a seven-day vacation for ten, featuring a private chef and staff. Second Prize is a beautiful piece of jewelry donated by Creations by Cookie, and the Third Prize is four great seats to a Chicago Cubs game. All tickets can be purchased at ChicagoRegatta.com. Our new checkout system will allow both club charges and credit card payments.

The Chicago Regatta is blessed to have the support of our Club. We have raised a lot of money for children’s charities over the past 12 years. We ask that you once again open your hearts and give big. You always come through, and we're grateful.✶

POWER FLEET: FOCUS ON GIVING BACK CRUISES

For more than 75 years, members of the Power Fleet have generously offered their boats to provide cruises to the community. According to “The First Hundred Years; A History of the Chicago Yacht Club, 1875-1975,” edited by Richard and Wendy Van Mell, the Power Fleet started offering cruises to veterans of World War II in the mid-1940s. The first of those cruises was led by, among others, Chester Warrington, who was Commodore in 1950-51. (The Power Fleet’s current Yachtsperson of the Year Award is named after past Commodore Warrington.) Those early giving back cruises were offered to disabled veterans from Gardiner, Vaughn and Hines Veterans Hospitals and continued into the mid-1950s.

In 1996, the Power Fleet’s giving back cruises were expanded to offer cruises to sight-impaired individuals. The early cruises offered 40 children and 15 aides cruises aboard ten powerboats.

Thereafter, cruises for people with special needs were added. The first group that participated in the special needs cruises was Good Shepherd Manor. Over the years, cruises were offered to Misericordia Home and Helping Hand. More recently, the Power Fleet added St. Mary of Providence to its list of facilities taking part in the Special Needs Cruise. With the addition of those groups, the number of guests grew to more than 100.

This year’s Special Needs Cruise was the largest anyone can recall. We had more than 145 guests from the four facilities. For many of the participants, this was their first time on a boat. And for those making a return visit to Monroe Station, their joy and excitement to be back was clear. Their smiles and eagerness to board the boats created a party atmosphere.

In light of the number of guests, it took a real team effort to make the event a success. CYC Members and others stepped up to make it happen. Members of both the Power Fleet and the Cruising Sail Fleet volunteered

35 Blinker ✶ SUMMER 2023

a total of 20 boats, ranging from 29’ to 83’, for the 90-minute cruise. Six of the Members who volunteered their boats were first-time participants.

On shore, we had 11 Sea Scouts from the CYC Sea Scout Ship 5870 helping with the docking of the boats. They also provided valuable assistance to our guests as they got on and off the boats.

Wintrust, the sponsor of the Special Needs Cruise, also provided volunteers to help with the boarding process and during the cruise.

The CYC staff provided lunches, consisting of hamburgers, chips and cookies to all of guests and volunteers.

The Chicago Marine Unit escorted the parade of boats and also helped with boarding. The Chicago Fire Department's water cannon display thrilled our guests. And both Channel 7 and Channel 9 provided media coverage of the wonderful event.

Loren Wolf, Chair of the Power Fleets Special Needs

Cruise, deserves special thanks for coordinating all of the resources needed for a safe and successful cruise. Due to her hard work, the event went off without any problems and was a tremendous success. Our guests truly enjoyed themselves, and all expressed an interest in coming back next year. Personnel from the facilities tell us the attendees talk about the cruise for months after the event.

More information on each of the cruises is available on the CYC calendar. If you are interested in participating in any of the events, please get in touch with Randy Schmidt, Chair of the Power Fleet. Everybody involved agrees: we have as much fun as our guests! ✶

If you are interested in participating in one of the Power Fleet’s Giving Back Cruises, here are some upcoming opportunities!

WOW IN 2023: LEADERSHIP, SAILING, CREATIVITY & FUN!

The Women on the Water Committee (WOW) has planned a series of programs this year focused on leadership, sailing, creativity and just having fun.

This past spring we hosted a lot of networking opportunities for Members to attend! In May, there was a women’s entrepreneur networking luncheon at Belmont, hosted by Rose Mills. An engaging panel consisted of female entrepreneurs who have successfully pivoted careers midlife. They spoke about the challenges and successes of setting out on their own. A special treat was that Amy Bissonette Photography was on site giving everyone who attended an opportunity to update their professional headshot!

In continuing with the theme of female leadership, a dinner with Brenna Preisser, Executive Vice President, Strategy and President, Business Acceleration of Brunswick was held in June. This stimulating conversation focused on how to be authentic in corporate leadership, especially in the marine industry. Special guests included alumnae of our "Lead Her Ship" program, generously sponsored by the Chicago Yacht Club Foundation.

The WOW Sonar Sailing Series is underway on Friday evenings, hosted by WOW members Sonja Elmquist and Aimee Smith. This is a fantastic opportunity for women of all ages and skill sets to get on the water, improve sailing skills and have a fun night with friends. The second session begins in August.

In addition to the Sailing Series, we are offering spinnaker lessons on the sonars, opportunities to learn how to sail on asymmetrical boats (J/70s) and power boating lessons. Please keep an eye out for more information! ✶

THE MAC GIVES BACK IN 2023

The CYC Foundation and the CYC Race to Mackinac are collaborating on the “Mac Gives Back” campaign this year, centered around the Foundation’s 2023 tall ship programs. Right around race time, the Foundation is offering a series of opportunities aboard the 77-foot gaff-rigged tall ship Inland Seas in partnership with the Inland Seas Education Association, "Lead Her Ship" and STEM cruises.

"Lead Her Ship" is a signature program of the Foundation. Each year, up to ten young women ages 14-17 embark on a five-day cruise on the Inland Seas to explore Lake Michigan and learn about sailing, leadership, teamwork, and Great Lakes ecology. In 2023, the Foundation doubled this program to offer two cruises for 18 young women.

New this summer, the Inland Seas is carrying aboard young people from six Chicago-area organizations to provide introductory experiences to the water. Participants will get a taste of the engaging STEM

lessons that can be learned aboard the tall ship and go for a local sail on nine half-day cruises hosting approximately 30 young sailors each.

The majority of our kids have not been on a ship before, and this will open their eyes to a new experience that will broaden their horizons!

Saturday, July 8th. The first group of "Lead Her Ship" participants was underway for five days. Club Members may have spotted the Inland Seas, docked at Monroe Station upon her return from this cruise, in between the nine STEM cruises. For some participants, this is their first sailing experience! The ship will depart Chicago and set sail back to Suttons Bay July 19th with nine more ambitious young women aboard; just in time for Race to Mackinac competitors to look out for the ship on the course.

"Lead Her Ship" alumnae often express excitement about their journey. We recently shared lunch with this year’s participants, and their anticipation for the cruises is building! Kaylin, 14, from the Union League Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago, shared “I swim a lot, but I have

never been on a boat before. This is a new opportunity for me!” The participants' courage and willingness to try something new is astounding. "We are so excited to have this incredible opportunity for members to explore the tall ship,” said Anastasia Hernandez, Senior Director for Club One and the Union League Boys and Girls Clubs Camp. “The majority of our kids have not been on a ship before, and this will open their eyes to a new experience that will broaden their horizons! Truly a one-of-a-kind experience!" ✶

THE RACE TO MACKINAC HISTORY PROJECT

Invitation to Participate

In 1898, Chicago Yacht Club members initiated our longest standing tradition, the Race to Mackinac. As we approach our 150th Anniversary and the running of the 114th Race, we have launched the effort to present the history of the last 113 races and to establish the platform to document the races of the future.

The advent of digital technology platforms makes it possible to illustrate the Race to Mackinac over the past 113 races and thereafter update the history over the next 113 races. The result will be a single document for CYC members, guests and invited historians to enjoy.

Mission:

Create an Evolutionary Record Dedicated to Preserving the Nautical Heritage of the Race to Mackinac.

Goal:

“Preserve the past to inspire future generations involved in the Race to Mackinac.”

- Commodore Lisa Curcio Gaston

All CYC members are invited to participate in this history-making endeavor. Racing and cruising sailors, power boaters, current and former Mackinac committee & race committee members, nonboaters, old guard, and new members all have something to contribute.

If interested in being a part of contributing to this historical endeavor, please contact:

CONTRIBUTE TO THE CHICAGO YACHT CLUB HISTORICAL LIBRARY

As we contemplate the celebration of our 150th year, it occurred to us that your stories help tell the tale of adventure on the waters of Lake Michigan. For instance, according to "There Will Always be a Mackinac Race," published in 1925, yacht racing history would not be complete “without the story of [CYC’s] great annual sailing contest, the Mackinac Race.” The book relied on ten authors’ eyewitness stories from the boats that participated in the early Mac Races. The old stories have magic and seem so full of bravery and bravado because we don’t know their boats, their clothing, their food, how the crew slept, etc.

We are inviting CYC voices to share their stories about sailing, powerboating, paddle boarding—or even kayaking. In addition, let us know how what other Club activities you take part in. That includes eating and socializing. This will generate a pleasant understanding of the value our members place on their participation in our Club. We invite you to send us a short story of one or more of your favorite boating memories and the people who played a role in your enjoyment. Please send them to Betsy Barrett at librarian@chicagoyachtclub.org.
