Chaz tells Mamie Till Mobley’s story By: Mary L. Datcher

hen the official announcement was released that Chaz Ebert would be producing a feature film on the story of Mamie Till-Mobley, mother of 14-year old Emmett Till who was brutally murdered visiting relatives in Mississippi in the summer of 1955—people were pleasantly surprised. Out of all of the scripts and projects that she could have taken on and produced; the question was why this particular story? As a non-fiction source of Chaz Ebert reference, Ebert found the best narrative of Mrs. Till-Mobley’s story to be found in the book, “Death of Innocence” co-authored by Mobley and Christopher Benson. 2 June 10-16, 2015 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Known to many as the wife of film critic and journalist, Roger Ebert—Chaz Ebert took over the Ebert Company as President and CEO when Roger Ebert lost his battle with papillary thyroid cancer in April 2013. As an attorney, she joined the company in 1990 as the Vice President of Operations, where three years later the couple married. She recalls. “I’ve been working with my husband for many years. Helping to run the company and then I became the President after he passed away. We also have a production company, Ebert Productions where we produced ‘Ebert Presents at the Movies’ and we’re in the process of developing other televisions shows as well related to the movies.” Born and raised on the West Side of Chicago, her family background is very similar to so many African Americans whose families migrated from the South up north for a better quality of life. Both her mother and father decided to relocate from Georgia in the post-World War II era and known as the “Great Migration.”. Her father was from Talbotton, Georgia and her mother grew up in Thomaston—the two towns are next door to each other just outside of Atlanta. “My father was a very quiet man. Very sturdy and a solid man who went to work to take care of his family. He didn’t talk about racism.” she said. “I remember when Dr. King was marching on the West Side, my father took my hand and we went out and marched. I never forgot that time because until then, he never talked about whatever horrid things he had experienced in Georgia that caused he and my mother to move here.” Chaz remembered the impact of what Till’s murder had on the Black community growing up during that time. When the project was brought to her by Shatter Glass Productions, she didn’t hesitate to bring it to light. “This weighs heavily on me because I feel that I have a duty to do it right, and I have to do it true to the spirit of Mother Mobley – as I call her. I feel it’s such an honor and a privilege but also a big responsibility that Mother Mobley’s estate gave us the exclusive rights to tell the real story. There are other stories that are going to come out about Emmett Till. I don’t know the way they’re going to handle it,” she explains. Mamie Till Mobley’s story , Page 13

The Patriot Act And The Right To Privacy By Robert T. Starks Defender Contributing Writer

In the wake of the World Trade Center terrorist bombing on 9-11-2001, the U. S. Congress passed and President George W. Bush signed into law on October 26, 2001 the USA PATRIOT ACT. This is a title of an act that stands for “Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001”. This legislation has been the subject of some of the most virulent and raucous debate in the Congress, amongst civil liberties advocates and citizens since its initial passage and that debate continues to this day. The major question at the center of this debate is “do American citizens have the right to personal privacy in their electronic communications with each other?” In other words, does the federal government have an unlimited right to spy on and engage in surveillance of persons suspected of terrorist intent and/ or related to terrorist groups, roving wiretaps, and searches of business and personal records? Most Americans would agree that we need regulations to monitor the movements of suspected terrorists. However, the question of personal privacy as embedded in Section 215 of the Act finally received a full airing in Congress and in public discussion in the waning days of May. On May 26th, 2011 President Obama signed the PATRIOT of Sunsets Extension Act 2011 which allowed for a 4 year extension of the three key provisions of the Act; Section 215, the” Lone Wolf” (individuals suspected of terrorism), and “roving wiretap” provision and let stand the provisions of Section 215. Section 215 authorizes the National Security Agency (NSA) in cooperation with the FBI to monitor and record the electronic communications of all American citizens. This practice has been labeled by civil libertarians as metadata collection or bulk data collection. According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation this amounts to allowing the “government to vacuum up the call records of millions of innocent people”. Mattathias Schwartz of the New Yorker Magazine, “estimated that the N.S.A. holds metadata for ‘hundreds of billions’ of phone calls’. Most civil libertarians characterized the provisions in Section 215 as unconstitutional because it invades personal privacy as defined in the constitution. Further, according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) the NSA under Section 215 and Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 (amended in 2008) has engaged in metadata collection of digital and cyberspace communications of private citizens. Schwartz of the New Yorker reports “Todd Hinnen, an official from the Department of Justice, testified in 2011 that ‘Section 215 has been used to obtain driver’s license records, hotel records, car rental records, apartment leasing records, credit card records, and the like.’” In the meantime, The Christian Science Monitor recently reported

that the FBI has a “secret air force of light planes that conducts overhead surveillance for a wide range of law-enforcement matters in many, if not most, of the big cities of the United States”. These planes added to the armada of Drones, all coordinated by the NSA equipped with cameras and “secret cellphone tracking devices called ‘dirtboxes’.” THE FIGHT AGAINST SECTION 215 IN THE PARTIOT ACT President Obama, upon entering the White House in 2009, expressed concern about the possible violations of privacy contained in the Patriot Act. Thus, he assigned his national security team to step up their surveillance of suspected terrorists without compromising privacy. Because of his concern for the protection of privacy rights, he supported the latest version of the USA Freedom Act. It was the compromise on the last version of this Act that allowed for the passage of the amended version of the Patriot Act. This amendment was passed with bipartisan support in both the House and the Senate. It passed the Senate by a margin of 67-32 over the strong objections of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and in the House with a vote of 338 for and 88 against. This bill places some real and practical re-

strictions and oversight of the NSA’s metadata collection practices. It was with the passage of this bill and its signing by President Obama that the Patriot Act was amended. Sponsored by House members like John Conyers (D- Detroit) and Jim Sensenbrenner, Jr. (R-WI) and Senate members Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Mike Lee (R-UT), the passage of the amended USA Freedom Act nullified all attempts to leave the Patriot Act intact. Mr. Obama is pleased with this outcome and sees it as a major part of his presidential legacy. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the EFF and other privacy rights advocates are not totally satisfied with this outcome because it does not remove all of the obstructions to privacy rights. EFF says “Our long-term goals are ambitious-the end of overbroad surveillance of all digital communications, a recognition of the privacy rights of people outside the United States, and strong accountability and oversight for surveillance practices. Today’s Senate vote did not accomplish these things, but it did move us a bit closer. It also demonstrated the political will and organization of the digital rights community, which we know will continue to fight for stronger reforms.” The Congressional Black Caucus was quite active and involved in the midst of the debate

on all of these issues led by Congressmen John Conyers. “While it is clear that the Caucus members are not monolithic in their political views, but they all are dedicated to attending to the needs of their constituencies. Thus, we had some differences in the approaches to the Patriot Act but we all agreed on the principles of privacy rights. We all wanted restrictions on the surveillance of digital and telephonic communications. It is because of these reasons that we embraced the amendments to the USA Freedom Act and voted for it on the Floor”, says Chicago Congressman Danny K. Davis. Black Americans have always believed that their affairs and communications were monitored by local and federal government. Given the history of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover’s COINTELPRO surveillance of the activists in the Civil Rights Movement, the Anti-Vietnam War Movement, and the subsequent FBI files that are still being compiled; Blacks have the right to be suspicious of government legislation like the Patriot Act and FISA. Black academics, legal scholars and Civil Rights leaders have all vowed to follow up on the needed further reforms to the Patriot Act. We can only hope that the final resolution to this question of privacy rights will be brought about soon.

Illinois Black Caucus Leads Nation in Enacting Police Reforms By Maze Jackson Defender Political Editor

As the residents of Illinois brace for a protracted battle between Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago), the Illinois General Assembly, and Governor Bruce Rauner, the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus quietly passed first in the nation legislation, a comprehensive law reform package, that among other things mandates police use of body cameras in Illinois. Senate Bill 1304, sponsored by Senator Kwame Raoul (D-Chicago) and Representative Elgie Sims (D-Chicago) was drafted to address concerns regarding law enforcement and the communities they affect. Some of the proposed reforms include: requiring independent investigation of all officer-involved deaths, improving mandatory officer training specifically in the areas of use of force and cultural competency, creating a statewide “Rogue Officer Database”, improved data collection and reporting, and the creation of a statewide Police Professionalism Commission. According to Raoul, Senate Bill 1304 was the product of Rep. Sims and himself meeting after the deaths of unarmed Black men in Ferguson, New York, Cleveland, South Carolina, and Baltimore and deciding they wanted to get something done. “There were over 150 different bills being proposed to deal with the police misconduct. We knew that if we wanted to get anything meaningful done, it would have to be comprehensive.” The two legislators, both attorneys, began the time consuming process of reviewing the various bills and combining them into a single piece of legislation that they felt they could get through both Springfield chambers. During the process of reviewing and drafting the legislation, both legislators recognized the need for buy-in if the legislation was to be successful. “We engaged all parties including Republicans and law enforcement,” said Sims. “We know incidents like Ferguson and New York have been happening in Chicago throughout history, and we felt this was the perfect opportunity to get something substantive done for the community around this issue,” Sims continued.

Getting the cooperation of law enforcement and Republicans was essential to the process because the goal was not to be punitive, but to find solutions that worked for all parties. Rep. John Anthony (R-Morris) who is Black, in law enforcement, and Republican served as a co-sponsor of the bill was instrumental in bringing his colleagues to the table making this a “bipartisan initiative” Sims noted. “Illinois is the first state to put forth comprehensive law enforcement reform legislation. Bodycam protocol, keeping a database of rogue cops, and a commission to look at licensing officers are all important elements of the bill.” Raoul stated. While no one wants “wants to appear soft on crime” it was necessary deal with this issue head on Raoul said. “We wanted to get it right, get it passed, and get it to the Governor’s desk.” What also remains to be seen is whether Republican Governor Bruce Rauner will sign the Senate Bill 1304. Currently embroiled in a battle with the General Assembly over the budget, Sims remains “cautiously optimistic” he will sign the bill. “The Governor’s office was involved in the meetings along with representatives from law enforcement, the Republican caucus, as well as various community stakeholders. Combine that with the overwhelming support we got in both Chambers, I think he signs it.” If Governor Rauner signs Senate Bill 1304, Illinois will be the first state in the country to pass the comprehensive reforms that activists have call for around the country, from body cameras to independent review of police involved shootings. More importantly, Senate Bill 1304 was spearheaded by a Black Caucus, that has grown younger, and more willing to take on the issues that impact themselves and their peers. It also reflects a Black Caucus becoming increasingly more active in providing comprehensive solutions for the Black community. “These reforms will minimize instances of police brutality without criminalizing police,” said Assistant majority Leader Kimberly A. Lightford, Chairman of the joint Black Caucus. “We need to keep officers and the public accountable.” www.chicagodefender.com

One Million Degrees Food+Wine Tasting to Benefit Community College Scholars By Arionne Nettles Defender Contributing Writer

It’s not always enough to just read about community college scholars so each year, One Million Degrees enlists the help of a different sense—taste—to connect and celebrate its students, alumni, and supporters at its 8th Annual Food+Wine Tasting. With over 500 people in attendance, under-recognized Chicago students were celebrated in a venue filled with supportive guests eager to meet them and learn about their personal stories. CEO Paige Ponder sees the impact that community colleges have on students each day and honored City Colleges of Chicago Chancellor Cheryl L. Hyman with the One Million Degrees Civic Award for her leadership in serving Chicago’s community college students. The collaboration between the organization and city colleges is yielding beneficial results. In fact, scholars who are a part of the program graduate at over three times the rate of unsupported community college students. “Community college can be a launching pad, an on-ramp to post-secondary education,” says Ponder. “Every day, I see how incredibly talented and driven the students we work with are and I hope that people here can feel a personal connection with them. 65 percent of them are first in their family to go to college and all of them are low-income. They are an incredibly driven group of people who have successfully navigated through challenges and for us to be a part of this really pivotal moment in their lives as they get their degrees, plan their careers, and launch their futures, to me, is the most exciting aspect.” In addition to helping the organization raise approximately a quarter of its operating revenues every year, guests also have the opportunity to meet One Million Dollar Degrees scholars who receive needed assistance from the organization in a number of ways. Scholar ambassador Homira Wardak is an example of how community colleges can play a huge role in helping people in reaching their ultimate dreams. While studying pre-med at Harper College, Wardak receives support from One Million Degrees in her journey toward becoming a physician. “I feel very honored to be a scholar with the program because I have www.chicagodefender.com

access to support systems that other students may not have. I feel like the mentoring, coaching, and tutoring—in addition to the financial support—is also very helpful,” explains Wardak. “The program has done a lot for me. I’m very grateful and once I graduate, I plan to come back to give that same support to other students who will be in a similar position.” In addition to raising awareness of current scholars and their achievements, the charity event will actually help a number of students who have not yet experienced the support that One Million Degrees provides. Currently, the organization is committed to furthering its reach through exponential growth and increased partnerships with city colleges. “We are really focused on expanding the number of students we serve. Last year, we helped 130 students, this year it’s 250, and next year, we’re going to serve 450. We’re trying to double every year. We are also forging new partnerships with particular city colleges. We have a program now at Kennedy King College in Englewood and our new college partnership is with Olive-Harvey College, where we have staff onsite to work closely with larger groups of students.”

For the food lovers in the audience, the evening was filled with culinary delights from the area’s top chefs. Chefs Thomas Lents of Sixteen; Matthias Merges of Yusho, Billy Sunday and A10; Mauro Mafrici of Pelago Ristorante; James Kozak; Sandra Holl of Floriole Café & Bakery; and Ji Yoon of Acadia provided exquisite dishes and decadent desserts while sommelier Dan Pilkey of Champagne Cattier expertly paired each course with the perfect wine. “Any time that we can actually do something that makes a difference in the world and that helps people, I want to be a part of it,” says Chef Lents. “The effect is visceral—you can see the difference that it makes in people’s lives. It really means a lot to me to be included.” The cuisine was undoubtedly extraordinary in taste, but had a much deeper meaning for the night. One of the dishes served was colcannon—a traditional Irish dish, which Chef Lents thoughtfully prepared and discussed with each guest. “This dish was taught to me by my grandmother, which I took and changed it a lot. It’s a very simple dish, but given the right treatment and care, it can be made into something greater. I think that it fits the theme of the evening.”

Mis-Education of The Negro 2015 A week ago I was engaged in dialog amongst peers regarding our socio-political responsibility to the community. As we talked, what emerged, threw us for a loop momentarily. It became increasingly clear that Generation X does not respect the Baby Boomer. I shared an experience where an intelligent young brother who was teaching in the Los Angeles Public School district, point blank said too me, “Your generation didn’t do sh_ t!” After I got over the initial shock of how he found it so easy to speak to me in that manner, I said to myself, “just listen let me learn why he thinks as he does.” I identified the problem. He could not recognize what my generation did because it was different from what he was looking for. Our movement was unique to the circumstances of our moment. Just as his is different than that of the Millennial and ours different than our parents. Still it was hard to accept how he could say that the generation, which birthed the “Black Power Movement had done nothing. The Black Panther Party evolved out of the post Civil Rights aftermath and we took back our identity. We embraced our African heritage and accepted it with pride. It dawned on me that The Mis-Education of the Negro continues. The message given us by author Dr. Carter G. Woodson in his book originally published in 1933 taught that African Americans of his day were being culturally indoctrinated, rather than taught, in American schools. This conditioning, he claims, causes African Americans to become dependent and to seek out inferior places in the greater society of which they are a part. He challenges his readers to become autodidacts and to “do for themselves”, regardless of what they were taught: History shows that it does not matter who

is in power... those who have not learned to do for themselves and have to depend solely on others never obtain any more rights or privileges in the end than they did in the beginning. Here is a quote from the book: “When you control a man’s thinking you do not have to worry about his actions. You do not have to tell him not to stand here or go yonder. He will find his ‘proper place’ and will stay in it. You do not need to send him to the back door. He will go without being told. In fact, if there is no back door, he will cut one for his special benefit. His education makes it necessary.” That has not changed, only the way in which they indoctrinate us. We have come a long way and yet we have not veered very far from the vicious circle around which we evolve. We are quick to judge one another, to criticize, to ridicule, to point fingers, and spew negativity about one another failing to recognize the circle that we are caught up in. We continue until this very day to talk about ourselves as being “like crabs in a barrow,” Lazy and don’t want nothing,” and on and on. Most of us fail to address the conditioning, the conditions and circumstances that have brought us to this state. The “House” Negro and the “Field” Negro is alive and well as a belief created to drive a wedge between us. This is just one more thing that is part of the rhetoric that stops us from moving forward. For a young person to say to an elder, “Your generation did nothing to contribute to our advancement,” is a reflection of just how deep the mis-education runs through our psyche. As long as we continue to participate in negative thinking, negative energy, negative and or destructive behavior we will find our selves going around in circles. If we continue to look outside of ourselves for help we will always need help. Once we get that we are our keeper then we will get that we are our brother’s keeper and what we do, we do for the whole and the well being for all. We will strengthen our belief in ‘self’ and therefore in ourselves as a collective group and begin to work in tandem with the spirit and move to change those habits and behaviors that keep us enslaved. When we do that then we will experience transformation and move away from all that is not good. We will begin to do for ourselves as we do for our-self. So what the Baby Boomer did is to step into the dream that ML King saw and what the Freedom Fighters fought for. We stepped into what looked like integration and equality based on the personal and individual integrity of each that made up the collective equally of one people. We are still going through it to get through it. This is the meaning of We shall over come.” We will create the door, open up the door and we will walk through the door.

Terrence Tomlin Defender Managing Editor The sun was shining bright and the community came out in full force to support the Chicago Defender as they celebrated “Lemonade Day” at both the Chicago Defender Headquarters and Garfield Park. A free Health Fair was also held at the Chicago Defender Headquarters for those who attended the “Lemonade Day” festivities. Participating children worked hard and showed their entrepreneurial spirit as they designed their own lemonade stand and churned lemons for their own tasty batches of lemonade to serve to their customers. Prizes were given to “Just Good Lemonade” for the best tasting lemonade, “Niya’s Lemonade World” for best lemonade stand design, and to “Bright Star Drug Free Lemonade” for the lemonade stand that sold the most lemonade. Attendees of the free Health Fair enjoyed Breast Cancer Awareness and Smoking Cessation seminars. Children had the opportunity to receive free teeth cleaning and dental exams. Participants also had the chance to receive free High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, and HIV screenings. There was truly an activity for the whole family! Sit Or Get Off The Pot By Maze Jackson

Black folks stay mad. Mad at their politicians. Mad at the police. Mad at the sellouts. Mad at media. The list goes on and on, and quite frankly I am sick of hearing it. We are our own worst enemy in most cases, but instead of doing something about it, we keep complaining. And we know what complaining gets us. Absolutely nothing, so I say it’s time for Chicago’s Black Community to “Sit or get off the pot!” You heard me right, “Black folks need to sit or get off the pot,” or we will keep losing power, influence, and opportunities, and really I don’t have too much more time to wait on Black people. Now, please don’t misunderstand, I am down for the cause and I will fight the power with best of them. I KNOW that institutionalized racism exists and there are a plethora of issues that affect the Black community’s outcomes. I get it, but I have two kids in private school, a mortgage, car note and bills, so I don’t have time for Black people to keep playing with my money, so I’m going to say it again. BLACK PEOPLE…SIT OR GET OF THE POT! BLACK PEOPLE, you got one more time with me, before I trade my red, black, and green flag in for just a green flag, the money flag. You got one more time with me to complain about two Chicago’s, but can’t come together to even field a Black candidate for Mayor. You got one more time to complain to me about the prison industri-

al complex that is making money off of mass incarceration, but you won’t even challenge the local State’s Attorney. Yeah, you got one more time to complain to me about a rubber stamp, when you won’t donate, volunteer, or vote. So again I am saying it, Black people…it’s time for you to sit or get off the pot. I could have taken a check and been quiet a long time ago but I have spent the last 20 years fighting for Black people to get their fair share in the political and business worlds, which does not always work well for my ATM card. Conversely, I watch the Black community view the successful Black businessmen and politicians with disdain because they collaborate and work with THE MAN. We call them sellouts, Uncle Toms, and all types of vile names. We hate on them for their money, their votes, and their success. My generation says we won’t be like “THEM.” But as I watch how Black people do, and you know how we do, with little things like VOTING…if the new generation of leaders has to deal with the same mad Black people that complain about everything, but don’t do anything, then we too will eventually become the same people that the mad Black people are complaining about and the cycle of downward spiral of the collective Black community will continue. So we can eat together, or we can eat alone, but we are going to eat! Which means it’s time for Black people to sit…or get off the pot! #mazesaid www.chicagodefender.com

Many hands together can make quite the impact and together with local nonprofit Back 2 School Illinois, Deloitte employees swapped out a day of helping clients to help local kids in need. The South Side YMCA of Metro Chicago hosted the event, which had a simple but meaningful goal: to create school supply kits for kids that cannot afford them. The Back 2 School Illinois “Build A Kit” program launched to help companies give back and volunteer together while supporting this amazing cause. As a part of Deloitte’s Impact Day, employees gathered at the South Side YMCA to spend the day filling, organizing, and sorting boxes with school supplies. These kits will eventually be distributed throughout the area to kids in need. Additionally, Deloitte employees have raised over $5,000 to help purchase needed supplies. “I’ve been with Deloitte for seven years and every year, I participate in our annual Impact Day. We do this at over 900 sites all across the country and I think it’s a wonderful opportunity that our business closes shop for a day so that we can volunteer for the organization of our choice,” says Matthew Krajcer, tax manager at Deloitte and the Back 2 School Illinois board member, who organized the event. “Our goal today is to put together 2,500 school kits—1,000 will go to military families in need to thank them for the work that they do and the other 1,500 will go to low income families because we know that they need the boost to kickstart their school year.” Back 2 School Illinois is the largest school supply distribution program in the state. In 2014 alone, it provided over 850,000 school supplies to more than 28,000 underprivileged children, but the work of Deloitte and other corporate partners is essential in expanding its reach. “Every year in Illinois, there are over a million children from low income families. In a perfect world, we would be able to provide school supplies to all one million of those kids each year,” explains Back 2 School Illinois CEO Matthew Kurtzman. Although the South Side YMCA of Metro Chicago was the location for prepping the school supply kits, its collaboration with Back 2 School Illinois goes much deeper. “The Y stands on a number of pillars—one being academic readiness—and Back 2 School Illinois www.chicagodefender.com

Kurtzman adds: “Aside from reducing some of the stress on parents, there’s the self esteem component for the kids, which is a really big part of what we do. Imagine what it’s like for a child to walk into class on the first day of school and see his classmates have things that he doesn’t. Can he succeed at school when he doesn’t even have the basics like pens, pencils, and paper?”

Bronzeville gets First Black Owned Italian Restaurant Jasmine Browley Contributing Writer

From huge pasta shells stuffed with gorgonzola to braised lamb shank with creamy polenta, Peytyn Willborn promises her new American/Italian restaurant will offer both creative and healthy cuisine not normally found in Bronzeville. Truth Restaurant , 56 E. Pershing Rd, opened to the public last month. Willborn, who also owns three 24hour daycare centers and formerly a hair stylist to Monique’ among other celebs, said she wanted to give the community an alternative to the food chains that are spread throughout the Bronzeville neighborhood. “Only the freshest of the fresh is served from our kitchen,” said Wilborn, referring to the homegrown ingredients all three of her chefs use to prepare Truth’s dishes. Willborn, a Bronzeville resident, knows firsthand how challenging it is to find fresh and healthy food options in the community. When she found herself starting to travel up to 40 minutes away from home to find a meal to fit within her vegetarian lifestyle, she decided to do something about it. “Being a vegetarian for more than 20 years, I was tired of having to eat mediocre food when dining out on the south side of Chicago,” said Wlborn. Although Truth is not solely vegetarian, it has options that satisfy all palettes. The restaurant’s menu includes sandwiches with grilled chicken and appetizers including roasted tomatoes and goat cheese. There are salads that are made up

You can also substitute whole wheat pasta for the more traditional white noodles. Although Willborn wants southsiders to feel at home, she wanted to keep her menu as authentically Italian as possible to offer her patrons a dining experience outside of what they’re used to. “I’ve had customers come in that have visited Italy and praised my food for closely resembling what they’ve had there, and other customers that have never even heard of bruschetta,” said Wilborn of her customers.

Willborn said she became fed up of not having the same options as most north and central Chicago residents when it came to dining. “I am humbled to know that I am the black ONLY owner of an Italian restaurant on the south side that could rival those that are located in the parts of Chicago that usually ‘matter,’” Willborn said, referring to the heavily favored north and central sides of the Windy City. The serial entrepreneur said she plans to turn the restaurant into a chain with locations dotting more southside neighborhoods like Englewood and Auburn Gresham. Although she is vehement about the locations of the restaurants, she has been met with reservations from friends and concerned family members due to the neighborhoods’ violent history.

“Chicago is no media darling, let’s be clear about that,” WIllborn said. “The entire country is afraid to come to our neck of the woods because of the reportings of violence, but I don’t care about that.” Willborn has hope that despite the rampant violence, there are more people willing to improve the communities than destroy them. She believes those same people will patronize her business. “I want Truth to be a household name when they think of healthy, accessible and delicious food,” Willborn. The Power of Faith: Bishop J.L. Jones, Sr. By: Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer

The power of faith is interwoven in our community through the foundation of churches, mosques and temples. Throughout the last century, the diversity of religion has grown beyond the traditional Christian base presenting fractions of African American congregations resulting in international alliances among religious leaders. Bishop J. L. Jones, Sr. is an influential voice of the Apostolic faith, in 2014 he was selected as the Diocesan Bishop of the Illinois State Council of the PCAF (Pentecostal Churches of the Apostolic Faith Association, Inc.) International Organization as well as serving as State Bishop for 40 churches. His journey is a long and interesting one as former firefighter who started serving with the City of Chicago Fire Department in 1977. Working his way up the ladder over the years, he eventually became Exempt Rank and retired from his dual role as Assistant Fire Commissioner and Chief Officer of Diversity in 2005. His time as a firefighter allowed him to connect with various groups of people in the community outside his church and missions. Connecting with people started long before as his family relocated from Natchez, Mississippi following the trail that so many Black Southerners searching for a better quality of life. At the age of 11,his family moved to Chicago where he found his church family at Victory Apostolic Faith Church. Throughout the years, Jones was never far from his childhood church returning from duty after serving in the U.S. Army teaching Sunday school there and being called to the ministry in 1980. Jone’s rise in the Apostolic faith community has been a gradual dedication attending the Moody Bible Institute, Midwest Apostolic Bible College and Trinity Bible College. In 1997, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Pentecostal Bible College. Throughout the years, Bishop Jones has earned his place as one of the leading faith leaders. Aside from his international leadership role for PCAF, he is the pastor of the Apostolic Assembly of the Lord Jesus Christ located on the far South Side of Chicago. The role in the council has resulted in some gradual changes. “Let me go back a little ways and say that when our Bishop died. He died in the pulpit. The mantle kind of fell on me after the convention. I was selected as the chosen one for it. One of the things that I wanted to believe immediately is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the council to find out what was really needed. What do we need to do as pastors, what needed to change, what needed to stay the same. That took about 7 months. Once that was done, it gave me an open book or understanding of what I was dealing with. I knew the pastor’s needs, I knew the needs of the local congregation as a whole.”

Bishop J.L. Jones Jones works closely with young adults in the community and just recently founded “Ministers for Peace”, an organization that will be inviting a collective of leaders from various faiths to open up resources for the entire community. He believes it’s important to take time to invest in communities lacking proper role models. “I was with a student who was late applying for college and went with him to the university to meet with the admissions director. We have to keep them encouraged, it just so happens that the student has some home issues and life challenges. It’s important that we mentor our young people because there are some things that they struggle with.” he said. “I deal with group mentoring – there’s a big need for that. Also, sharing with young people the global landscape on the importance to discover the whole world. Not just your neighborhood and family but if you can become conscious---you can become aware.” Over the years, Jones and his mission have traveled the world . He is a constant

fixture in Liberia, Nigeria, Uganda, Dominican Republic, and Haiti helping to build schools and provide clean water and better living conditions. Jones is the President of the Brownlow, Belton, Sullivan & Arms, a non-for-profit organization. He was instrumental in the development of the seven-story Hancock House, an 89-unit low income housing complex for senior citizens located in the West Pullman community. The housing project started out as an idea among three missionaries; Hattie C. Brownlow, Mother Essie Belton and Dr. Lula Mae Sullivan. Jones explains. “We’re looking at building another senior building. It would be a blessing to the seniors once we get the building up. We’re hoping to have an After School program for young people so they can come into the church year-around. Mentorship is very important to me and to be there for them.” In his determination to connect faith leaders in his council with the community, Jones takes his role seriously especially in

the wake of the long electoral process that included both state and citywide public officials in office. He believes a pastor’s trust with his congregation should not be compromised for personal benefits. “As a pastor, we can’t afford to sell each other out, that is the thing that I’m looking at. If we sell each other out, after awhile we won’t be able to trust any of our own to move this thing out of its murky waters. We do look for each other on this level especially pastors like myself.” said Jones. Bishop J.L. Jones and his wife, LaVerne have been married for almost 46 years raising six children and the proud grandparents of seven grandchildren – he feels his work is not done. “We have to be very careful what we say across that pulpit and who we support. To rehearse it over and over on how this is going to effect the congregation and how is it going to effect the community? By Donna Battle Pierce As a regular of at least three weekly neighborhood farmers markets, not only am I thrilled they’re finally all opened, I am once again reminded of the wonder of spring, grateful for each fresh vegetable and the recipe exchange my openair markets inspire. Although we can find green onions and radishes year round in the supermarket produce section, there is nothing like the tender fresh flavor of freshly harvested immature onions, pulled from the earth before allowed to mature. Look for very tiny bulbs and straight, dark green stems with no curves as signs of peak freshness. And while we’re on the subject of early picks for your farmers market tote bag, force yourself to add a tiny bunch of radishes should you not be a regular customer of this colorful fast-growing member of the brassica family (along with arugula, turnips and broccoli). They’re at their best right now, the only time I go out of my way to seek them out for their subtle (not spicy) crispy bite. This week, when I returned with radishes and the skinny spring green

onions my grandmother called scallions and my mother called spring onions, I decided to blend yesterday’s rice and delicious leftover broiled chicken with fresh bounty from these early “risers” beginning to spring up during the 2015 growing season. Here’s my version, but feel free to use the basics of this recipe and fill in the main additions based on the leftovers from your fridge. Mamie Till Mobley’s story from Page 3 There have been documentaries and short essays on the life of Emmett Till but rarely one that delves into the story telling of Mamie Till-Mobley. Her experience and why she chose to share the horrific crimes against Black people that were often swept under the rug. Bringing truth and conscious to filmmaking has become one of the main missions of RogerEbert.com; a website that she runs as the publisher. “That’s the purpose of how we exist as a film review site. I like doing things that will shed light on the human condition and a way to illuminate it. Also, to inspire empathy for others and the possibility to heal. You can’t do this all the time,” she said. “You also have to write about plain and mundane things. We cover all kinds of hollywood movies but also independent films. I like to make sure we cover artists of every nationality and to make sure that we give due to African American artists and filmmakers as well as other ethnicities.” Chaz Ebert is no ordinary corporate executive—a high school graduate of Crane High School, she went on to acquire a bachelor’s degree from the University of Dubuque majoring in Political Science, attended University of Wisconsin to earn her MBA and came back home to attend DePaul University of Law School – earning her law degree. She practiced litigation in both environmental and equal opportunity law for a number of years before landing at the Ebert Company. Her reputation in the film and entertainment business proceeds her as one of the most influential people with whom to work with. What made her and Roger’s marriage work is their shared passion for humanity. The Roger and Chaz Ebert Foundation has donated $1 million dollars to the University of Illinois at Urban-Champaign and works with aspiring filmmakers and journal-

ists building a career in the entertainment industry. Her philanthropic works continue to create a positive platform for young people following in her late husband’s footsteps. This includes working with the Chicago Urban League in providing scholarships for Columbia Links students participating in the Ebert Scholarship program. As a woman in a male dominated field, does it bother her if people question her ability to carry her husband’s legacy? She answers, “If people are saying that, I’m not aware of it. I am not him. I’m different. I am a different person but the people who have known me over 20 years, knew I was married to him but also as the Vice President of the Ebert Company. They know that I am my own person.” “I don’t want to seem that I am just riding on his coat tails. I’m standing on my own two feet. I do realize the things that I do are very much likened to what he believed. He put such good out into the world that it does benefit what I’m doing in carrying on his legacy. But I’m also forging my own path.” In bringing the story of Mother Mobley to a new generation of film goers, she understands that the current climate of social injustice in bringing the topic of racism, police brutality, and a broken legal system is coming around 360 degrees. Her action runs deeper than just producing another race biopic. “You have to really become conscious of identifying the problem and talk about it. So that it becomes part of the fabric of what you’re trying to do. I do think that paying lip service to something is good as long as you’re paying enough lip service to it that actually means something to translate into some kind of action.”

Khandi Alexander: More than Momma Pope By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer In the last 8 years we have been privy to the unique writing and story telling skills of Shonda Rhimes, the executive producer of hit television series, “Grey’s Anatomy”, its spin off- “The Practice,” , “How to Get Away with Murder” and the jaw-dropping “Scandal” on the ABC Network. Two seasons ago, a new character was introduced to viewers—Maya Lewis, the terrorist and cunning mom of Olivia Pope. Viewers who’ve followed the career of actress, Khandi Alexander were happily surprised when she made her debut on the show playing opposite of Kerry Washington. Fans of the show immediately tweeted their praise to the casting selection of Shonda Rhimes because if you know what ‘Shondaland ‘knows about Khandi Alexander—she is a tier A actress and one of the most sought after. As a native New Yorker, Alexander entered the entertainment world as a professional dancer on Broadway. As a young dancer, coming up in the 1970’s one of her earlier influences was dancer and actress, Paula Kelly. “I refer to her as my ‘spiritual mother’ because when I saw her do the big spender number in ‘Sweet Charity’, I knew that’s who I wanted to be. I’m going to be Paula Kelly. Her and also, Lola Falana--I just love that mixture of technique and glamour. The hard work that’s behind all of that. A trained dancer is an athlete so I enjoy working hard. It was very gratifying,” she said. During Khandi’s time on Broadway, she’s starred in “Chicago”, Bob Fosse’s ‘Dancin’ and “Dreamgirls” breaking her chops into the world of choreography. She played the recurring character of Jackie Robbins in medical drama series ER. Alexander has made a number of guest appearances on other television shows, including Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, NYPD Blue, Third Watch, Cosby, Better off Ted, La Femme Nikita, and Body of Proof. Working her way through smaller acting roles, she began to transition from dancing making appearances in movies including, What’s Love Got to Do with It, Sugar Hill and Poetic Justice. It wasn’t until the Emmy-winning HBO miniseries, “The Corner” where we saw Alexander as Francine ‘Fran’ Boyd, a drug addict mother of two young boys growing up in the inner-city of Baltimore. The love affair with HBO kicked off the love affair with viewers. “I love HBO. It always starts with the material and HBO gets the best materials and the best ‘creatives.’ The executives are brilliant. I love them and I’m very proud of my affiliation with them. Everything they do is at a higher quality. I’ve been very fortunate – very fortunate to work with them for so long.” she said. Her longest role thus far has been playing the character of Alexx Woods, the medical examiner of the hit CBS television series, CSI: Miami from 2002-2008. She recalls: “CSI: Miami, was absolutly wonderful. I like to be as flexible as I can with my instrument and sometimes in this business, if you’re not—you can get pigeon holed and type cast. If you want to have range, you have to take risks. You have to be brave, save your money so that you can flex your muscles, and spread your wings.” she said. “If you keep the level of your work high and your professionalism on set – most times, the producers will sadly but kindly let you move forward. That’s what happened with CSI: Miami. I’m forever grateful. business post-hurricane Katrina while juggling the challenges of wife and mom. “It was interesting because I wasn’t expecting a call to do “Treme”. When I left CSI: Miami, I didn’t leave to go anywhere. I didn’t know what was coming. I just knew it was time to explore and it was time for me to use my instrument in a different way. I knew it was time to move forward. It was more so to work with David again. The material came second and I hadn’t read the material. I just knew if he was on the phone – I said ‘yes’.” she said. Without losing a beat, when the award-winning series ended four seasons later in 2013, sooner than later, she received the call from executive producer, Shonda Rhimes to join the cast of the hit television series, “Scandal”. She had no idea that her role would survive after her first season playing ‘Mama Pope’. “I know that when Poppa Pope put me in that hole, I just thought-’Okay, it was nice knowing you guys. I had a good time here.’” she laughed. “I even told Shonda, thank you for getting me out of the hole. It’s that kind of crazy, where they like to keep people on the edge of their seats. I wasn’t sure but I trust her completely so if she chose to leave Pope down in that hole I know she had her reasons.” “Whatever Shonda wants to do is good, because she is so wonderful to work with and to work for. I just trust her instincts and her talent. Her staff has been so kind to me.” With another season of “Scandal” on summer hiatus and her character surviving the fate of Poppa Pope, Alexander takes on the role of Blues singer Bessie Smith’s older sister in the HBO m a d e - f o r- t e l e v i s i o n film, Bessie starring Queen Latifah as the lead character, which aired in May. She explains her character, “The bulk of my research was more about the time period and there wasn’t much about her sister. I really needed to find out everything around her so that I can make her sister’s reality feel right and authentic. Her sister wasn’t in show business or that world so it was very important that I grounded that role.” she said. “So, when

Bessie came into orbit, you have a sense of what it took for her to get out. How phenomenal her career really was.” This summer, Alexander will be in production, filming the “Unknowns”.The film is based on the life of author and civil rights activist, Zora Neale Hurston. “I’m very excited about this. It’s pretty big shoes to fill.” That’s exactly what the actress portraying Khandi Alexander’s life years from now will be saying.

Over 25 of the nation’s most talented African American artisans will showcase their fine art, jewelry, clothing, handbags, accessories and more during the revitalized Lake Meadows Art Fair. Helen Y. West, curator and organizer, is pleased to announce the 10th anniversary of this historic Bronzeville event that will be held on Saturday and Sunday, June 20 and 21, 2015. The art fair opens at 11:00 a.m. and closes at 8:00 p.m. each day and will be held on the parking lot at 33rd Street and South King Drive across from the Lake Meadows Shopping Center which is currently under renovation. Various vendors will also exhibit their wares and provide food and beverages during this funfilled weekend that is both family-friendly and free to the public. Ms. Gray is a self-taught fine artist who holds a master’s degree in history and teaches at Triton College in River Grove. Her artwork has been exhibited in many venues, including juried art shows and galleries such as DuSable Museum, University of Illinois-Chicago, South Shore Cultural Center, Millennium Park, Gallery Guichard, Grant Park, Zhou B Art Center, ETA Theater and the Drake Hotel. In addition, her art has been featured on BET and is also in several celebrity private collections. She employs oils, acrylics, sand, fabrics and molding compounds to celebrate beauty, culture, and spirit. She fuses her choreo-poetic style of spoken word with her unique singing ability to garner a powerful word attraction. Her sound has been described as “lively, energetic music that makes your feet move and heart think.” Ugochi has shared the stage with established artists such as John Legend, Common, Eric Benet, Maxi Priest Femi Kuti, Shaggy and others. She has graced stages in many countries, including France, Italy, Holland, England, Brazil, Jamaica and her home country of Nigeria. On Sunday at 3 p.m., drummer Xavier Breaker, who has been playing drums since the age of five, will bring his group, the Xavier Breaker Coalition, to the Lake Meadows Art Fair. The Coalition was formed in 2013 and is described as a versatile group in which each member has a different musical background ranging from gospel to R&B, jazz, rock, hip hop, classical and other genres that have come together to form an original sound. Xavier is both a musician and a songwriter who hails from South Carolina and graduated from Northern Illinois University in 2011. The group is named Coalition for its mission to uplift, inspire, heal and take people on a journey to places where they have never been through the gift of music. Closing out the Lake Meadows Art Fair with her musical magic will be Chicago’s own songstress Maggie Brown on Sunday evening beginning at 6 p.m. Maggie made her professional acting and singing debut at the Body Politic Theater. She studied music, theater and voice at Columbia College Chicago and has traveled with her show, Legacy, which follows the history and evolution of African American music with a wide range of musical forms. A protégé of both her father, Oscar Brown, Jr., and Abbey Lincoln, Maggie has developed a distinctive vocal style that is described as “transcending limitations and genres while still maintaining her unique, unmistakable voice.” She has been featured at the Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park and with Orbert Davis’s Chicago Jazz Philharmonic at the Auditorium Theatre and the Logan Center for the Arts, as well as in many other Chicago venues. LaRay Reddin will serve as DJ throughout the art fair spinning his combination of old school, R&B, adult contemporary and jazz.
