Journalists and Bloggers Take a ‘Journey Into Sound’ in the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid By Brandi Montgomery (NNPA/DTU Fellow, The Atlanta Voice) Cars signify individualism and mobility, while music provides the thrill, expression and tone. So what happens when Chevrolet links with Revolt TV? A lucky few journalists and bloggers take a “Journey Into Sound.” Music can change your mood and can help you start your day. It can calm drivers in traffic and prevent road rages. It can cease boredom during a road trip. Typically one’s music selection varies. The listener chooses songs based not only on their lyrical meaning, but also because of the emotional response they illicit. Chevrolet selected a small group of media professionals to test drive the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu on a road trip down the Pacific Coast Highway to the luxurious Malibu Beach Inn. Later the group participated in a panel discussion about the music business and the impact of social media on artist development and promotion. The next day, Chevrolet introduced the reporters and media influencers to more of the Malibu’s music-themed, 02 June 29 - July 05, 2016 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

technological features. The new Malibu supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and it also offers Bluetooth connectivity for easy access to playlists that are already in your phone. The car comes equipped with the Pandora app, an Internet radio service that plays music selections of a certain genre based on the user’s preferences. Chevy Malibu allows passengers to connect up to seven devices to the built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi network. The media contingent then traveled to Los Angeles, Calif., for a live concert at Revolt TV studios featuring the jazz-fusion sounds of Terrace Martin. This was the type of experience where you can easily lose your self in the music. Music and the new 2016 Chevy Malibu Hybrid make discovering new roads easier and a lot more fun. FRONT PAGE Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer When we think about the changes that have taken effect over the last decade in the music business, we go back to the impact of technology. Each growing generation has influenced the marketplace with changes in technology from the Generation X’ers to now the Millennials. Chancelor Bennett has become an anomaly of his generation. He’s not flashy and he doesn’t drive pimped-out cars with an entourage of “too many” — he’s subtle in his appearance but conscious of his style. He could easily be mistaken for a skater just as much as an emcee, but his approachability has garnered him fans who are his peers. To his followers, he is Chance the Rapper — a hip hop artist who loves to bop dance, embraces his city of Chicago and who is unapologetically independent of major record labels. Since his first mixtape, 10 Day, was brought on by a 10day suspension in his senior year. To rave reviews, the debut of 10 Day introduced him to the game with over 300,000 downloads on Datpliff, bringing on Acid Rap in 2012. Since then, his collabo on Childish Gambino’s mixtape, Royalty, sealed his fate, joining his tour as the opening act. The Jones College Prep high school graduate has over 1.7 million Twitter followers, a daily fixture on Snapchat and has built 363,000 plus YouTube subscribers to his channel. All without the help of a record label machine behind him, all while still residing in his hometown. His most recent release, Coloring Book, has been hailed by critics as one of the “strongest rap albums” this year by Pitchfork. His third release with an array of features including the opening song featuring fellow Chicagoan Kanye West and the Chicago Children’s Choir “All We Got”; Justin Bieber on “Juke Jam”; Young Thug and Lil Yachty “Mixtape,” including the song “No Problem” featuring Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz at over 3.1 million listens on Soundcloud. The album entered the Billboard 200 charts at No. 8 upon its May 13 release, making Coloring Book the first streaming-only release to ever chart in the top 10. Bennett’s unconventional approach to releasing his music and making it available for free to fans has brought nearly every major label at his doorstep. During a time when drill music was forcing label giants such as Universal Music and Sony BMG to take notice signing inner-city kids straight from the block, Bennett says the labels’ approach was predictable.

Chance the Rapper’s Unconventional Approach Changes the Game

Chicago’s own Chance the Rapper (Photo by Rene Marban) “Just the way they would talk to me. They just had a very similar script. They would try to sign my friends at the same time. There’s a lot of small pet peeves that I had, but overall I understood the lack of power that comes with a monopolized industry,” he said. “When it comes to small things that blew me like people flying me out to meetings and never discuss numbers. They would talk to me about the infrastructure of their labels.” He realized that although there were various companies, they were under the thumb of the three major record companies. It’s been almost three years since Chance the Rapper first graced the stage at Lollapalooza — the largest music festival in North America. When many artists fight for the chance to get in on the smallest stage, he achieved this

grade student, Bennett remembers his first experience with hip hop music. “When I first heard “Through the Wire” on the radio and right after that, my mom went and bought me College Dropout and then every Kanye West album since then,” he said. “That was the first real music that I called my own. That was a big thing for me. After that, I was able to reach back and find music that I loved that represented me growing up. That was my first real experience with hip hop.”

his fellow South Side friend. “Kanye had a conversation on either Sway or the Breakfast Club’s radio program — they were asking him on how he could hate these companies so much talking about their power, how corrupt and bogus they are? But why does he continue to ask funding from them or enter into an industry that doesn’t want him? He explained companies aren’t monolithic, or a supreme thing — they’re just a bunch of people that work in a building and those people get replaced all of time,” said Bennett. “You can’t say, f**k the Grammys all day. You just hope that somebody works in that building and in that corporation and that person has a vision similar to yours that can change something.” A few months ago, Bennett came across a petition by a young artist opposing the Grammys rules, requiring all compositions to be commercially released through digital or physical sales in order to be considered for a nomination. In an ever-growing industry that has dwindled in physical sales with streaming outlets such as Apple Music, Spotify, and now Tidal, giving both indie and major artists more exposure, Bennett added his support to this appeal. “A large problem that I had was the verbiage used and the rules. It was about commercial releases through a major distributor. That has two problems: One, that music has to be commercially released but also saying a major distributor limits any artist that isn’t signed to a label or distributed through a larger company from being recognized from excellence,” He feels the recognition of his peers is what makes the Grammys special — being recognized for music excellence. Last week, The Recording Academy made the announcement of new updates allowing previously ineligible streaming-only works into the process. The new guidelines go into effect immediately in the current year awards cycle—making the likelihood that Chance the Rapper may be added to the esteemed Grammy nominee list for the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. Bill Freimuth, Senior Vice President of Awards for The Recording Academy, released an official statement. “The Grammys aren’t just peer-awarded, they’re peer-driven. Throughout the year, members of the music community come to us asking to make changes to the awards process, and we work with them to figure out how those changes might work,” he said. “I went through a lot of fighting continued page, 07

Bronzeville Club Boosted Career of Many Black Comics Chicago Comics Are Grateful: Jokes and Notes Closes Mary L. Datcher Defender Arts & Entertainment Editor Today, riding through the 47th Street business corridor on Chicago’s South Side is a very different contrast from several decades earlier. The Bronzeville community was filled with thriving retail stores and merchants who proudly displayed every category of services that were Black-owned and operated. From State Street to Hyde Park Boulevard — it was a pulsing vein in the arm of economic growth within the Black community. Jokes and Notes comedy club can be added to that historical registry of nurturing talent that has brought value to the comedy lane of entertainment. Opened in 2005, the comedy club is owned by Mary Lindsey — a former co-owner of the famed 1990s All Jokes Aside venue. After 11 years, the South Side club that was a favorite fixture on 47th St. and King Drive closed its doors this past weekend to a packed house. Business has changed since she was initially asked to join the burgeoning Bronzeville business district by then 3rd ward Alderman Dorothy Tillman. “Dorothy Tillman told me she

Mary Lindsey would always came to All Jokes Aside. She convinced me to come to her ward because it would be an awesome addition to jumpstart the area. I looked into it and it started to progress,” said Lindsey. Tillman, who at the time led the 47th Street redevelopment efforts, was adamant about restoring the cultural resurgence that had been lost for years in the neighborhood. The former alderman says there was an opportunity to bring Second City to the community, but knowing the significant value of bringing Lindsey to the area was priceless. “I took the option in choosing a Black comedy club over Second City. After meeting Mary, I made a decision to bring her in. It’s sad anytime a Black business is closed,” Tillman said. “It put a little sadness in my heart.” Jokes and Notes is not your average comedy venue — it is considered one of the top performance rooms for Black comics in the country.

A mural at Jokes and Notes www.chicagodefender.com

Jokes and Notes has closed its doors after jump-starting numerous comedy careers. WGCI-FM morning show personality and comedian Leon Rogers developed his craft earlier in his career at venues like All Jokes Aside and is grateful for Jokes and Notes presenting a solid platform for young African-American talent. “The day that she surprised me was when she put my face on the wall in her club. For me, it elevated me to the next level in comedy. I had earned the respect from one of the most notable comedy owners in the nation — that meant a lot to me. Just seeing my face on the wall with other greats like Robin Harris, Bernie Mac and Richard Pryor. I just felt that was Mary respecting what I did, respecting my craft,” said Rogers. A native of Chicago, Lindsey worked in corporate America when she was approached by her friend Raymond Lambert to help produce comedy shows headlining some of the country’s rising Black comics. At the time she was the vice president and head of operations at the Chicago Board Options Exchange. Lindsey quit her job and soon became the co-owner of All Jokes Aside, where they transitioned from a banquets space to relocating across the street at 1000 S. Wabash, creating a full-fledged licensed nightclub. At All Jokes Aside, rising comedians would become regular head-

liners, including Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer, DL Hughley, George Willborn, Monique, Laura Hayes and Adele Givens. “They didn’t have a platform. All the white clubs — Funny Firm, Improv and Zanies — were not giving them opportunities. We said we’re business people, we can do it and set the criteria. They had to dress up for this — this was the criteria,” she said. “We wrote the policies to set the stage that they had to operate by.”

Kevin Hart Reaches Out

A few weeks ago, box office star Kevin Hart reached out to Lindsey to tape a sketch comedy showcase at the club. He and his team focused on five to six cities to search for new talent. Over the years, Lindsey has built a relationship with Hart and his manager. “They went to Harold’s Chicken on 43rd along with Kevin pretending to go to a stepper’s set with a crazy suit,” she laughed. Lindsey sent them over to neighborhood favorite Frances Lounge with Marlon Mitchell in the Grand Crossing community. She said, “That’s exposure for all of us, even though I’m closing; I just feel that my name goes on.” With the success of Chicago-born comics Deon Cole (Black`ish) and former Jokes and

Notes host Lil Rel (The Carmichael Show), they are a small fraternity of comedic stars who have called the Bronzeville venue home. Lil Rel showed his tribute to Lindsey by posting this statement on his facebook page. “Jokes and Notes was my home away from home. It’s where I was able to grow comically, learn the business and build a fan base. That stage is where all of my truth would come out, rather good or bad. It was a place I could put it all on the table. Mary Lindsey became my second mom and teacher.” Over the last five years, Lindsey admits business has been bumpy, having to recover from the rumors of the club being closed because of a fire that occurred at neighboring restaurant Blu 47 in 2010. She welcomes the departure to spend more quality time with family, friends and, most important, herself. “I want to take a long break. Afterwards, I’m going to figure it out. Opportunities are going to knock at my door and if these opportunities present me going into a different direction, then I will accept them.” She said one of her goals is to produce a Jokes and Notes Comic Festival. “That would be awesome. The brand is strong, so we’ll see what happens with that.”

Let’s Get Real About Racism E NOTES By Kai EL’Zabar

Defender Executive Editor Earlier in 2016 I had the opportunity to attend a breakfast held in downtown Chicago centered around a conversation on race. Those represented were a mix of religious leaders, not-for-profit leaders, educators, businessmen and women, and of course me, representing a media type. The majority were white, five Blacks (three men two women) out of about 75 attendees. What I found interesting was white author Jim Wallis’ take on race in his book America’s Original Sin, which was grounded in reality. However, the majority of the other whites had no compass to measure their truth except for what they read in the papers, saw on television or film as it pertains to Blacks. So there, of course, is the stereotypical dangerous Black man; the oversexed Black man (and the Cosby scandal was not helping); the pimps; the MIA father, aka “baby daddy”; the entertainment archetype: sports, rap, actor, etc, and the self-serving preacher. On the female side there are the video vixens, the welfare mothers, the prostitute, the loud potty mouth mother yelling obscenities at her children, and of course, Oprah, the modern-day mammy who nurtures and takes care of everyone and happens to be very wealthy; Olivia Pope, the highly educated career-driven female executive who has a warped relationship with her father and none with her mother, and who seems to have a thang for white men, powerful or not, and Cookie, the ghetto fabulous uneducated talented sister who loves her family. These are the images that they have of Blacks, and they had come to discuss race in 2016 as a result of the violent abuse of power by police against Blacks, often resulting in their deaths. They have few if any Black associates or friends. They live in the suburbs, or upper middle class or wealthy communities throughout the Chicagoland areas. Sidebar: I remember Lake Forest, Lincoln Park, Hyde Park and Lake Shore communities mentioned. Let me continue. As members of the audience spoke, the comment that aroused my inner frustration came from a very nice woman who had no idea that she had ruffled my feathers.

To paraphrase what she said, “Whenever we begin to discuss race among ourselves we are so ashamed, we feel so guilty . . . when we learn about these new crimes against Blacks by the police, we feel worse. We want to help, but are afraid to talk to Blacks about our role.” My response — and I did respond because this is an ongoing problem: Blacks have always had to know you/ white folks. Our very lives depended on knowing all about you, your thinking, your ways, your fears and your hatred. So the fact that slavery ended and we find ourselves co-existing under a racist society operating under systemic racism, which allows whites to live separately away from Blacks except for a few hours a day where they might work with Blacks, does not help to develop or foster any relationship between the two.

Equal Opportunity a Myth

I bring this up because many white people think that Blacks have equal opportunity in America and that what we suffer is because of our own deficiencies. They fail to recognize the existence of systemic racism, from which they benefit. The woman’s comment, “these new crimes against Blacks by the police,” really disturbed me. That’s’ the point here, such violent acts towards Blacks are not new, but rather have been ignored when reported by Blacks. Only now with the capability of modern technology is the truth being revealed for all to see. To be clear, they need not feel guilty any more than we accept that we are to be subjugated by them, but rather they recognize that racism is based on economy and that America grew quickly because of the free labor provided by slaves. Today that ideology continues and so Blacks are forced to be the bottom of the work force

Letter to the Editor Long Past Time to Iron Out a Budget Illinois Press Association Defender Contributor

Illinois’ budget standoff must be resolved, and must be resolved now. For a year, our state’s elected leaders have engaged in what can only be called political malpractice. Illinois is the only state in the country that doesn’t have a budget. For a year, because of that failure, it has stiffed small businesses, social service agen-

If whites are sincere about wanting to help, then they have to be willing to talk real about what racism is and how it exists. caused by the disparities in education, employment, commerce, business, career and pursuit of happiness opportunities, and mainly that our word is not creditable. Without this there is no hope, destroying all possibility for a race to be self-determined. The despair that plagues Blacks in America grows out of this like a cancer that eats upon itself, the community destroying itself from within showing up as violence, drugs and other forms of self-destruction. Specifically, white police officers have taken advantage of the systemic racism that exists and have gotten away with it since their beginning as a legal force. All you had to be is white and accuse a Black of anything; therefore, without question or doubt what should be alleged becomes law based on the white officer’s word, including that he shot the Black victim because cies and its higher-education system, leaving them trying to operate without money they’re owed. State operations have been cobbled together through a patchwork of court orders, and the mounting backlog of money owed gets deeper by the minute. On Monday, Gov. Bruce Rauner said the state was on the verge of crisis, and that it would be an “outrageous, tragic failure” if schools don’t open on time this fall. With all due respect, Governor, the state is already in crisis, and the budget standoff has already been an “outrageous, tragic failure.” As legislators return to Springfield — for the first time this month — Illinois’ historic, serious problems have been made even worse by the failure to compromise on a balanced, long-term spending plan. The political war between Rauner and House Speaker Michael Madigan has been confounding and unconscionable.

he feared for his life. This rationale is a continuation of Jim Crow racist behavior and code. From it developed “Code Blue” of the code of silence among fellow officers. This is shared among the Black officers as well if they want to keep their jobs or become a victim themselves — also a form of terrorism. What we need is for whites to accept responsibility for the system under which they benefit daily, a system that ensures their success even when they fail again and again, while crushing Blacks. If whites are sincere about wanting to help, then they have to be willing to talk real about what racism is and how it exists. They have to be willing to leave their comfort zone and transform the mindset of white supremacy that is so intricately woven into the very

infrastructure of society in such subtle ways that it is readily part of the subconscious. Whites believe that they are superior, and Blacks — as a consequence of hundreds of years of terrorism and abuse — have little faith in their own right to succeed, accepting what crumbs the system is willing to dole out. If we believe that Black lives matter, if we feel that we deserve a better quality of life, if we can see a future for ourselves, if we know that we are human and that we contribute daily to the world community and that we make a difference, then we have to step up, step out and do whatever it takes to change the belief system we are living in.

Rauner has insisted on passage of the so-called Turnaround Agenda, a series of pro-business measures, as a condition of the budget. Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton have seemed focused primarily on thwarting the governor. Neither the governor nor the legislature has put forth a balanced budget. Decades of delaying action and willfully ignoring issues like the state’s epically ballooning pension obligations have devastated its financial stability. The state must make cuts, and yes, more revenue will be needed to stanch the economic bleeding. The consequences of having no budget have been harsh and far-reaching.

road construction projects might be shut down, leading to as many as 25,000 workers losing their jobs. The state’s corrections system says it’s on the verge of not being able to feed inmates and operate prisons. Social services agencies will continue to turn away the ill, the homeless, the elderly. The state’s schools were spared last year by a separate appropriation. But this year, many districts face the very real possibility of not opening or not being able to stay open. But what have citizens seen from the Capitol? We have seen political posturing. We have seen a governor who campaigned as a practical business leader dedicated to finding fixes instead act as an ideological purist. We have seen their elected representatives apparently unable to stand up to Madigan, Cullerton and Rauner to demand a resolution to the crisis. We have not seen compromise. A stopgap budget bill simply staves off an emergency. It’s the bare minimum that needs to be done. Even if lawmakers pass one, they still have a long road toward developing a sensible plan for the state’s long-term survival. But the day has come. Illinois’ people cannot be held hostage for a second year without a budget. Voters must revolt and demand better. Enough!

Colleges in Crisis The state’s colleges and universities, which ought to be linchpins for growth and economic development, instead have been starved. Hundreds have been laid off, programs have been shuttered. High school graduates look at this mess, fear for their future, and enroll in out-of-state colleges. Our best and brightest may not come back after they complete their education elsewhere. Meanwhile, more than 130,000 low-income students have had financial aid snatched away. Do these students who wish to better themselves and their future job prospects through education have other resources to continue? In most cases, no. And yet, it could get even worse. That began a talking point between me and the artists that were on the project and myself and the labels that represented the artists on the project.” From that point on, Bennett says both he and the companies agreed that Coloring Book would be for streaming-only and not for download, enabling him to release the music the way he preferred. He said it was one of the lessons he learned in working with the majors without compromising his creative platform.

Lessons From Childhood

It’s no secret that his upbringing included growing up in West Chatham, a middle-class neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. His younger brother Taylor Bennett is following his footsteps, carving out his own path as a rap artist, but it’s their parents who are a constant presence in both of their lives. “I am heartbroken over the level of violence in Chicago,” says Hillary Clinton. (Photo by Worsom Robinson)

Hillary Up Close By Kai EL’Zabar Defender Executive Editor Hillary Clinton came to Chicago on her Midwest Campaign jaunt to address the Women’s International Luncheon at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition 45th Annual Convention. Afterward, the Chicago Defender sat down up close and personal with the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee to get greater insight into her vision for a better America. “I have an old-fashioned belief that if you run for president, you should tell people what you’re going to do,” Clinton said as she revved up. “Listen, the next president of the United States can have the opportunity to select one, two, three Supreme Court justices . . . and we don’t want that president to be Donald Trump.” Back stage, Clinton said that she has a personal commitment to working with the Black Press and all local press; however, she has noticed in particular the assumption of some in various parts of the country where she has traveled that it is assumed that the Black Press will show up. “And that’s not always the case, so we want

to make sure that we make the effort to reach out, and not only during the campaign, but even in the White House,” Clinton said. “I see the Black Press playing an active role in getting our message out directly to its readers, participating in the various activities such as today’s luncheon, and making sure that it has access as well as being included in the advertising buy. Hillary Clinton has made it clear that she will continue the initiatives that President Barack Obama implemented and work to enhance affordable health care. She credits the president with having actually saved America from another depression worse than that of 1929, having inherited the worst financial crisis in American history since the Great Depression. And he’s done so much more than he is given credit for, and she plans to continue support of those efforts of great concern. When asked about those underserved communities like the Black, Brown, LBGT, etc., Hillary Clinton said she has plans to address the issues that pertain to each, and you can actually go to her website and read for yourself exactly what her vision is. However, she provided insight and began, “First of

“The next president of the United States can have the opportunity to select one, two, three Supreme Court justices . . . and we don’t want that president to be Donald Trump.” all we need more good jobs with rising incomes, because we’re just not seeing enough of them. There aren’t enough employment opportunities in Chicago’s underserved communities.” It’s clear that Clinton recognizes the disparities that plague the marginalized. She proposes, “We need to

make sure that there are some big, bold programs like infrastructure, like clean, renewable energy, like advanced manufacturing, that are within the reach of those people who need those jobs and have to be given the chance to compete for them,” she said noting what we have seen in the last 10 to 15 years is that a lot of the jobs in the country are not within reach of those who live in the most distressed urban or rural areas. So Hillary Clinton says she wants to make jobs available first. Second, education. She is adamant that we have to do better at preparing our youngest children to go to school and support them throughout so they will be successful. Clinton says, “There are a lot of ways we can do that. I am committed to working with communities, churches and educational systems to try to figure out how.” But it’s clear that she gets the comprehension thread that makes it all work. She says, “But parents and grandparents have to be supported in doing the most important job of raising the next generation of children, and we need to do all that we can to see to it that we do that.”

Clinton spoke to her vision to re-create “schools that people believe in, that they are passionate about, and we have that in a lot of places and I know that you don’t have that in Chicago.” She expressed in detail, “We need diversionary programs so that we’re not suspending and expelling five-, six-, seven and eightyear-old kids who are acting out. We have a terrible disciplinary divide where kids who are either having problems or are just acting like normal kids being suspended if they’re African-American or Latino and white kids doing the same thing aren’t.” She paused and continued, “That starts the whole cradle-to -prison pipeline.” In her effort to end the cradle-to-prison pipeline, Clinton envisions doing more to intervene in helping the little kids be successful, which would include after school support intervention programs. “We just need a big wrap around, It takes a village to raise a child attitude about how we’re going to help our kids.” For the older youth, she recognizes that there is nothing for teenagers to direct their energies and how easy it is for them to be misdirected, often leading to gang affiliation or some other form of violence of destructive behavior. She reminds us, “There are no organized activities; there’s nothing that breaks the attraction of a gang, where their thinking is at least I’m on a team if they’re in a gang as opposed to having options to choose from like being on a team (sports, academic, etc.,) that may advance their life rather than end their life.” She then segued to comment on Chicago: “I am really confused as to why Chicago has so much more violence year after year. And we have to factor that into federal programs. Congressman Jim Clyburn of South Carolina has an excellent program that he calls 10, 20, 30, where 10 percent of federal money would go to 20 percent of the communities that have had 30 years of poverty. We have to focus on these places and it can’t be one size fits all. What may work in Chicago may not necessarily work in Miami or New Orleans,” but she’s determined that it’s necessary to figure out what does work and take action. As president, she says “I want more creativity, I want more people at the table, I want more community input, but I want to figure out how to stop the killing. I just don’t understand it. I look at New York, Los Angeles and they have dropped their numbers way down. They have poor places. I live in New York so I know firsthand. So continued page, 09

what is going on here, what is happening here? It’s police? It’s guns? What it is it? “I have to confess I am heartbroken over the level of violence in Chicago. . . I worry a lot about this. I was born in Chicago.” And what will she do about the overpolicing in Black communities and the high level of violence? Clinton says there are several problems that have to be addressed. “I am interested in making sure that we have policing that is respectful and effective; because what I’ve heard from talking to a lot of people, elected officials, business people, activists here is that you don’t have the policing you need and you’re not able to feel protected and respected. I feel that is what our goal has to be.” Finally she concludes, “The policing issue is an essential, necessary step to be resolved, and then we have to figure out what more can we do to keep people safe.” In relation to the gun issue and the associated violence Hillary Clinton says very passionately, “It’s a civil rights issue and I will do everything I can: legislation, regulation, litigation because I think we have veered off the track. We are intimidated by, controlled by and directed by the gun lobby in Washington. Members of Congress are scared to death, governors and state legislatures are scared to death, and why? Because the gun lobby represents a dedicated focused group of voters. And

Hillary Clinton addresses a range of topics with Kai EL’Zabar. (Photo by Worsom Robinson) they will make anybody who doesn’t vote with them pay the price.” However, she noted that yet the vast majority of people want these changes, so we’ve got to start acting like they are a voting issue to us. She also pointed out that she promised the parents who have lost their children to gun violence that, “I will do everything I can to change the

gun laws. I will work continuously to do so.” If she becomes the first female president of the United States, she will break the highest ceiling and with that in mind, she would bring a cognizant reality of setting a precedent for women in the workplace. Her first consideration is the cost of child care, as she recognizes that

it is one of the biggest problems facing women. Clinton says, “I have put forth a plan where no family has to pay more than 10 percent of their income towards child support. Right now a worker paid minimum wage depending on where they live spends 20 to 40 percent of their meager income.” So child care is going to be a big

push. She says, “I want paid sick days, paid vacation days, paid family leave,” she continued, “I really want to talk about and act on getting families of today the support they need, as opposed to having our policies act if as we’re still in the 1950s. “We also have to raise the minimum wage.” she added. “Right now, two-thirds of minimum-wage workers are women. And that’s a poverty wage. And I have met women working two and three minimum-wage jobs just to keep their heads above water, to keep their house, to keep their kids in day care, take whatever it may be.” And not to forget, she said, “Also we have to keep pushing equal pay. It’s not real. And I don’t care what the Republicans and Donald Trump say, it is a big problem still.” Further, Clinton says that she wants to see how to assist minorities and women in starting their own businesses. But women are the fastest creators of business startups, “so I want to see how we can help improve the process, to get faster credit, helping them to get the support they need, to understand to write a business plan, how to deal with the stress of being a business owner. “I’m very excited about that. My Dad was a small-business owner. I want to help, women particularly, working women, young people, help everybody get ahead. So I have a whole collection of programs addressing those concerns.”

This year, the annual House music reunion picnic has added a second day to the highly attended and largest African-American outdoor festival in Chicago. A montage of dance music ranging from the traditional deep, soulful sounds and disco cuts to more modern beats — the bad boys of summer are a collective group of Chicago DJs. The two-day event kicks off on Saturday, July 2, with an all-star talent line-up that reads like a House music lover’s dream — Groove Odyssey’s Bobby & Steve, R&B singer Monique Bingham, Josh Milan, Joe Clausell along with the Chosen Few DJs. For some of the folks who aren’t familiar with the names mentioned outside of the typical Chicago suspects, here’s a brief recap to prepare you for the musical escapade. Bobby & Steve Brought up on and inspired by the greats of soul music such as Teddy Pendergrass, Loose Ends, The Chi-Lites, Leroy Burgess, McFadden & Whitehead, Barry White, Thelma Houston and the Jones girls. They have the longest-running radio show, “Zoo Experience” on London’s Kiss FM serving up the

repertoire of music that has made the pair famous through their legendary parties that were “Garage City” and Soul Heaven. Monique Bingham South African born, Monique Bingham has been responsible for some of the hottest dance hits that infuse soulful jazz and house music for almost two decades. Her work includes working with Abstract Truth in the mid-1990s at Francois K’s legendary Axis studios. The $7 request for one pint of strawberries came as a surprise when the farmers market vendor turned his left palm up for the cash while offering a small bag containing the sign he pointed out distinguished them as “large freshly-picked, home-grown, Michigan berries.” “I thought they were $4,” I said, pointing to another hand-written strawberry sign. “Nope, those are different…You’re buying the special ones…big, old-school berries,” he said. I thought of my supermarket produce section, just a few blocks away where commercial berries were available for less than half the price I was paying. Still, I counted out much more than I had intended to spend that day on strawberries. But I also thought of my shortcake muffin recipe, the one I adapted for my son from the reprint of a cookbook originally published in 1911 by Rufus Estes, an elegant Pullman Private Car Porter. What would Chef Estes say about $7 a pint strawberries? I laughed when I thought of his probable answer…And then I followed the directions I imagined he would whisper, knowing that as a private chef for presidents, corporate executives, high-ranking government officials and royalty, he would tell me to buy two pints of these berries to have enough to keep the promise of his book, “Good Things to Eat.” Later that evening, a bite into what I had begun to refer to as “berry expensive shortcakes,” brought back the intense flavors of childhood berries and sweet memories sharing delicious summer desserts around the family table. Worth every penny.

1 quart (2 pints) strawberries, hulled, sliced 3/4 cup sugar 2 cups flour 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 eggs, beaten 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted 1/2 cup milk Whipped Cream

Chef Estes´ “Old-School” Strawberry Shortcakes Place the strawberry shoes into a medium bowl; top with 1/2 cup of sugar. Cover; refrigerate un-til ready to serve. (This can be done the day before) Heat the oven to 400 degrees. Add the flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl; mix together with a wooden spoon. Stir in the remaining 1/4 cup of sugar, eggs, melted butter and milk, stirring just until all ingredients are mixed. Use a scoop to fill paper-lined muffin tins about three-fourths of the way full. Bake until an inserted wooden skewer comes out clean and muffins are cooked through and beginning to brown, about 18 to 22 minutes. Transfer shortcakes to a wire rack to cool Makes 12 shortcakes.

To serve, remove cooled shortcakes from paper wrapping. Cut in half crosswise. Place the bottom in a dessert or cocktail glass. Top with sliced strawberries. Place the shortcake top over the berries. Add more berries and some of the berry juice. Top with whipped cream. Makes 12 servings. Note: If you are making less that 12 shortcakes, reserve ungarnished shortcakes to serve for breakfast as muffins. Starting a Business Requires More Than a Good Idea Dr. Sakira Jackson Defender Contributing Writer Businesses fail all the time. Ninety-five percent of all businesses that start fail in the first year. Of those that remain in business after the first year, ninety-nine percent will be out of business within three years. So with the odds so high that you when you start a business it will fail, why do so many people keep trying, and why-ohwhy do they keep failing? Not always because they don’t have a great product or service. Not always because the owner/CEO is not passionate about their business and definitely not always because there is no need for what they offer. Nine times out of 10, businesses fail because of faulty thinking on the part of the owner/CEO. You see, just because you are an expert in cutting hair, fixing cars, baking cakes, tailoring clothes, designing widgets, installing electricity, building houses, it does not automatically translate to business success. Truly, the old saying “build it and they will come” does not always apply. Just ask George Shaheen, CEO of Webvan. Webvan was one of the first companies that tried to make a business out of selling groceries online. It was a great idea: Americans love getting things delivered. Webvan even offered to deliver groceries to customers within a 30-minute window. Great, right? Not really. customers weren’t ready for online grocery shopping just yet. Unfortunately, the CEO, George Shaheen, thought he knew more about his potential customers than he actually did. He apparently didn’t know about marketing to a niche of earlier adopters. Shaheen believed so strongly in his service that he opened warehouses, bought a fleet of trucks, and spent hundreds of thousands on company’s offices. Sadly, Webvan went under in 2001, years before the normalization of online grocery shopping. So, being early to market isn’t always a good thing. Not only did he have faulty thinking about the market demand, he also hadn’t properly defined the niche of ideal customers. Yet, fast forward to 2016, Peapod, which began in 1996, even before Webvan, continues to lead the online grocery shopping marketing.

Beware Faulty Thinking

Now some might say Webvan failed because of lack of sales and they would be correct. You do need sales in order to generate revenue. However, 1. If you, the business owner, are not thinking about your business correctly, 2. If you have not properly defined your niche, 3. If you are not thinking about your product and services from the customer’s

perspective, then faulty thinking will be your business downfall. It is imperative that you know and understand what and how prospects think. What does a customer think, say, and do before they buy? This is the buyer’s journey -- the point of unawareness of a need, to the point of sale in the mind of the customer. Sheehan was so convinced in his faulty thinking that he completely misdiagnosed where the prospects were on the journey and he made assumptions about them without clearly defining his niche, i.e. the what, the how and the why they buy. And we all know what happens when one assumes. The worst assumption may have been potential customers were already thinking about buying “online groceries.” When in the late 90s early 2000s people hadn’t even embraced the internet, let alone begun to think about buying groceries on-line. So then, why did Peapod succeed and Webvan fail when they both provided similar services before the potential market was even aware of the need? Simple, Peapod used education-based marketing (EBM) to establish itself as a lifestyle solution for busy families. Peapod identified a specific consumer or niche in the market and educated those prospects on the benefits of their service. They educated potential customers on the benefits of “online grocery shopping” and created a desire for the benefit. Peapod used an education-based marketing strategy to illustrate the benefits and established credibility and trust with their customers. EBM allows you to focus on benefits in the mind of the customer and direct potential customers along the buyer’s journey from unaware to awareness to interest to seeking to buying your product. And you can use the buyer’s journey to grow your business too. Identify your unique selling proposition (USP), research your niche, create a benefit-focused marketing strategy and get out in front of them. Education-based marketing is the best way to share facts and information, which can help your potential customers make better decisions. And they reward you by spending their hard-earned cash. Remember, people do business with businesses whom they know and trust and won’t do be business with ones they don’t trust.
