The Charleston Tragedy:
An Open Wound That Won’t Heal By Mary L. Datcher Senior Staff Writer
One hundred fifty two years ago, President Abraham Lincoln issued the final Emancipation Proclamation paving the way for African Americans to be granted total abolition of slavery and citizenship in the United States. Although it was considered the ultimate level of freedom for slaves, their nightmare was just the beginning. The Confederacy loss to the Union states made it extremely hard for African Americans to transition from their former plantation homes to the path of independence. The hatred and segregation spewed from Whites ensued as time went on in building a new South—one that segregated both groups into separate and non-equal communities. The church has always played a solid role in African American communities, it’s home whereas the standing faith of God among Blacks can be found in our historical blueprint. South Carolina’s renowned Emanuel AME Church is among the first Southern Black church to lay this blueprint. On Wednesday, June 17 it suffered a major tragedy that struck a deep, emotional chord in a wound that continues to bleed over. Three Black men and six Black women were gunned down in cold blood by a white young man who walked in the same path of hatred that so many White men before him had walked. On June 17, 1822 church founding member, Denmark Vesey—along with 34 other members were hanged. Was this a coincidence? Attending bible study was routine for the victims without a second thought. To gather as a group and look forward to seeing each other in the sanctuary of Emanuel AME church in which they called a second home was an effortless ritual. Rev. De’Payne Middleton (49 yrs.), Rev. Daniel L. Simmons (74 yrs.), Rev. Sharonda Coleman-Singleton (45 yrs.), Myra Thompson (59 yrs.), Cynthia Hurd (54 yrs.), Suzy Jackson (87 yrs.), Ethel Lee Lance (70 yrs.), Tywanza Sanders (26 yrs.) and the young pastor Rev. Clementa Pinckney (41 yrs.) who led the bible study. Pinckney, a member of the South Carolina State Senate was known for his open heart and welcoming nature invited Dylann Roof to sit beside him when he entered the building. This beautiful church has seen a great deal in the course of its 200-year history. Founded by a freed shoemaker, Morris Brown in 1813 in Charleston as the first Black church in the South. Denmark Vesey, also a former slave, had joined Brown to build an impressive congregation of approximately 3,000 members. Vesey won a $1,500 lottery, bought his freedom for $600 from his Bermudian slave owner, Joseph Vesey who took him to the U.S. mainland at age 14. He was unable to purchase the freedom of his wife and children. As the congregation of the church strengthened so did the concern of white residents in

Soon after, he and others were arrested, secretly tried and lynched and the church was burned to the ground. Morris Brown fled to Philadelphia, establishing another church and becoming a bishop. Afraid of the repercussions of immediately rebuilding the church, Black residents met and worshipped in private gatherings. They rebuilt Emanuel AME Church, which was leveled due to an earthquake in 1872. Turnaround or Shutdown By Maze Jackson
Chop The Head Off

By Robert T. Starks
With Democratic super majorities in the House and Senate, Speaker Madigan has long held an iron grip on the decisions made in Springfield, and eventually he gets his way regardless of who is the Governor. Governors Edgar, Ryan, Blagojevich, Quinn, and now Rauner have all had to face The Speaker, and the outcome is usually the same, The Speaker get what he wants and Illinois gets what he thinks is best for us. Apparently Governor Rauner has had enough of that approach and with help from a $4 million dollar donation from billionaire real estate investor Sam Zell, Rauner’s Turnaround Illinois PAC launched a statewide television ad campaign targeting Democratic lawmakers, specifically Madigan for the current budget impasse and inability to get meaningful changes to resolve the pension crisis. Rauner for his part is doing what he knows how do which is balance a budget and get companies to fiscal solvency. As a former venture capitalist, he has taken a take business like attitude toward the state, willing to willing to cut services, programs, and state government to get to solvency regardless of the impacts it may have on the least vulnerable. In the past Madigan has been able to outfox, outmaneuver, or outspend his opponents, and regardless of how bad things got in the press, their was never a paid negative ad campaign running concurrently with the negotiations, and there was rarely any overt assaults on The Speaker, which meant that eventually both sides would negotiate a reasonable solution and avert a state crisis. In this case things do not appear to be heading for a solution, in fact may are speculating the Governor Rauner would prefer a state shutdown, while others remain cautiously optimistic. “Whenever someone new comes into government, there is a getting to know each other process,” said State Representative Marcus Evans (D-Chicago). We are trying to work with the Governor to get a solution, and I remain optimistic.” As evidence of their good faith efforts to work with Governor Rauner and acknowledgement that Illinoisans voted for change, the Democrat controlled Illinois General Assembly agreed to let the temporary tax increase expire and they agreed to sweep all govern According to Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Foundation Chairman Kimberly Lightford (D-Westchester) “The goal of the ILBC is to avoid a shut down. When the Governor came into office we agreed not to take any major actions until he had an opportunity to review the budget. We thought that he would come in with new ideas. He didn’t, he came in with cuts.” “What most people don’t understand is that Governor Rauner’s Turnaround Agenda does nothing to solve the budget crisis. We have a $4 billion dollar hole that that cutting services will not fix,” the Senator stated. According to the Commission of Government Forecasting and Accounting, the state of Illinois a budget shortfall of approximately $3.2 billion, meaning Governor Rauner’s proposed cuts are just, “a drop in the bucket,” according to Lightford, “there is no way to fix this without increase revenue.” Democrats acknowledge that explaining that message to their constituents will be a difficult task, especially considering that Rauner is spending almost a million dollars to attacking them. Combine that with rumors that Rauner plans to spend up to $1 million per candidate to run against Democratic incumbents, and the situation presents some very difficult choices for legislators who begin circulating petitions this fall. “The Governor is definitely using scare tactics with members and the citizens of Illinois. He is proposing a lot of cuts that will be damaging, not only to Black families, but poor families,” Lightford continued, “so we have to take our message to the people.” The ILBC will hold rallies at Chicago State University, South Suburban College, and South Austin Coalition this Thursday calling on Gov. Rauner to restore funding and increase revenue.

In its June 13th edition, Crain’s Chicago Business Editorial Board called for the resignation of Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy to resign! The editorial entitled “Time to take McCarthy off the beat,” the lead statement read “No one person can singlehandedly solve Chicago’s crime problem. But the Chicago Police Department needs a leader with a grasp of the causes of crime and clear strategies to address them. After four years on the job, it’s clear that Superintendent Garry McCarthy isn’t that man”. It’s clear that Crain’s Chicago Business thinks that chopping of the head of police will change things. As can be imagined, this editorial call coming from the premier business publication in the city has stirred some public discussion, controversy and political debate. Two days later, Mike Flannery, of Fox News 32 reported, “The Chairman of the City Council’s Black Caucus, Alderman Roderick Sawyer, told them that his group may call for firing Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy”. Alderman Sawyer further stated that the Caucus had planned to meet on Wednesday, June 17th to decide the course that the caucus would take in this matter. The Caucus did meet on Wednesday, however they made no commitment to ask for his resigna-
Superintendent Garry McCarthy tion. Instead they agreed to have Alderman Sawyer meet with McCarthy this week to ascertain his plans for an overall reduction in crime, better deployment of officers, and greater representation of African Americans on the force. Mr. Sawyer stated that he and the caucus are not necessarily adversaries because they realize that one person is not responsible for the escalation in crime. At the same time they want more and clearer communications between the CPD hierarchy and the Black Caucus. The major complaints against
cCarthy are that he is from New M York City and has brought NYC “street cop” tactics to the city that are not applicable. This approach according to FOX News, “Called CompStat, it uses computer analysis of crime and other data to hold officers — and the department’s top brass — accountable. What the numbers show right now is that Chicago’s 194 homicides murders are about 20 more than at this time in 2013 and 2014. The total number of shootings – 1,122 – is way up.” See Chicago Crime , Page 5

Live Life Chicago’s Sunset Over the City to Benefit Deserving Girls of My Favorite Closet By Arionne Nettles
Defender Contributing Writer
Using the beauty of Chicago in the summer time, young professionals in Chicago partied for a purpose at Sunset Over the City—a rooftop fundraiser to raise funds for young girls who deserve a special surprise. Hosted by Live Life Chicago, all event proceeds went directly to nonprofit organization My Favorite Closet, which creates pop-up boutiques in schools located in Chicago’s underserved communities. My Favorite Closet uses clothing not only to reward girls for a job well done, but also to boost their confidence and self-esteem, influencing them to continue to work hard in school. Understanding the direct correlation between appearance
and confidence, founder Jacqueline Perlman came up with the idea to create these pop-up boutiques by transforming classrooms across the city from their everyday appearances to chic stores filled with items that are just for them. Girls in grades 2 through 12 are then surprised with the opportunity to “shop” free of charge through hand-selected clothes and accessories. At the end of the event, each girl leaves feeling proud and empowered with a bag of six items that they’ve personally chosen. “We start with generous people donating their clothes,” explains Perlman. “Then, I’ll reach out to a school and work with its guidance counselor to pick 15 to 20 girls who are really excelling—either working extremely hard in their classes or
Chicago Crime from Page 4 African American West and Southside complaints against McCarthy range from the continual rise in crime to the increasing number of police shootings of Black citizens. Chicago consistently has one of the highest crime rates in the country. In a May 29th, 2014 report from the Illinois Herald, “Chicago ignoring Marijuana Decriminalization Law”, it states that Chicago has become the nation’s leader in arrests for persons possessing less than $5 worth of marijuana. The thousands of petty marijuana possession arrests prevent police from engaging in the prevention of and solving of the escalating number of murders. Black citizens believe that policemen are rewarded on the number of arrests that they make rather than the crime cases that they solve. This practice results in the imprisoning of thousands of nonviolent adults rather than murderers and shooters. The Illinois Herald report is based on a study done by the Roosevelt University Consortium on Drug Policy. This study concludes: 1) “The Chicago law, for instance, gives CPD officers the right to basically do whatever they want. Officers can dispose of the small amount of marijuana and let the offender go. They can write a simple ticket to the person, which is what the 2012 law intended. Or officers can continue the failed policy of arresting and criminally charging people;” 2) CPD in 2013 “chose to criminally arrest 93 percent of those they found in possession of minor amounts of marijuana.;” 3) While arrests of persons possessing small amounts of marijuana was increasing “the ratio between marijuana ‘possession’ arrests and marijuana ‘distribution’ arrests” was disproportionate to the number of arrests for possession. “Chicago leads the nation in arresting average citizens for possession of pot, while at the same time leaving the drug dealers and traffickers alone.” The great majority of those arrests for possession are Black; and 4) While police in middle class and wealthy suburban communities adhere to the state law and write tickets to those who possess small amounts of pot, the same discretion is followed on college and university campuses like Northwestern. Chicago’s Black citizens believe that www.chicagodefender.com
displaying certain characteristics. It doesn’t necessarily have to be because of academics, just student who have really earned the opportunity to be rewarded. After the counselor chooses the students, he or she will send me the sizes and I pick everything out before I actually go to their school. I pick items that I think are special and will get them excited.” With the downtown city skyline as a backdrop, attendees contributed to helping these girls experience this memorable surprise. Every dollar raised at the event goes toward the actual pop-up boutiques, including expenses that vary from transportation to the school to the physical items needed for setup such as racks, shelves, mirrors, and wall dividers. Because Live Life Chi-
this difference can be explained by examining the tradition of racism in CPD. Chicago has the reputation as the highest number of shooting of Black citizens by police in the nation, most whom have been unarmed. Police shoot Black citizens with impunity, realizing that in the history of the city only one policeman has been convicted of shooting and killing a Black person. When policemen kill Blacks they state that they felt that their lives were in danger at the time of their action. It is at this point that Superintendent McCarthy, Mayor Emanuel and the policeman’s union in unison support them regardless of the facts. Illegal guns continue to flow into the city and flood the streets. The mayor and Superintendent McCarthy constantly boast of the number guns that are confiscated from criminals. Yet, CPD has done little to stop the flow of these guns from reaching the streets! There is no tangible evidence of positive changes that have resulted from McCarthy’s so-called “listening tour”. According to a recent ACLU study, Blacks are stopped by police more than four times as often as New York’s stop-and-frisk practice. New York’s stopand-frisk practice was in place in New York while McCarthy was a New York policeman. Lastly, it is clear that most African Americans do not trust CPD officers because they are convinced that CPD does not take the solving of crime committed in the Black community seriously. This perception is supported by the statistics that show the low number of murders, rapes and robberies that are solved on the South and West sides of the city as compared with other parts of the city. Regardless of the outcome of the meetings with Alderman Sawyer and the Black Caucus, they will have to take into consideration the complaints levelled against CPD and Mr. McCarthy by the Black community. In spite of the solid support that Mayor Emanuel and Alderman Burke have voiced for Mr. McCarthy, the Black community is unified in their determination to see some real changes in crime reduction and the relationship of the CPD hierarchy to this community.
cago is an organization that knows how to have fun, its members had no problem gathering the masses in support of this cause and the event partnership between the two organizations proved to be a perfect one. “Life Life Chicago is a private members club and the whole goal is to bring together a diverse group of dynamic young professionals to enjoy the city,” says Nicole Ericksen, founder of Live Life Chicago. “We get together once a month and do all types of events just to get people
to take advantage of Chicago. My Favorite Outfit is the organization that we’ve decided going to support and it’s great because we bring people out to party for a cause. Everyone loves to come to rooftop parties in the summer—it’s perfect because it’s building awareness for the cause and bringing people together.” My Favorite Closet is in need of girls clothing and outerwear in sizes 5-16, women’s clothing and outerwear in sizes 0-12 and accessories such as jewelry, bags, and shoes.

In 1963 four little girls died in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing Sept. 15, fifty-two years ago. Addie Mae Collins, 14; Carol Robertson, 14; Cynthia Wesley, 14; and Denise McNair, 11 are remembered together to as a symbol of the violence Blacks have endured at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan and those who opposed racial equality during the 1960s. They serve as reference a point in the civil rights struggle for human rights. As individuals each lived amazing lives that ended too short. And if we believe in fate these girls—martyrs, whose lives were sacrificed for the betterment of our circumstances, could not have imagined their role in history and yet the impact is imprinted in our DNA memory. When they died, they were merely preparing for Sunday school at their local church. Had Addie Mae Collins she may have become an artist because she was skilled at drawing people. Cynthia Wesley was the first adopted daughter of her parents whose friendly and open personality made it easy for her to make friends for whom she loved to play music and entertain.Top of FormBottom of Form The ballerina Carole Robertson was also an‘A’ student known by her family and friends as one who walked with a purpose. Her life was full and included Jack & Jill, Girl Scouts, marching band, Church choir and the school science club. And those who knew Denise McNair say she was naturally inquisitive and destined to be a community organizer because that’s what she did even then. She organized fundraisers to fight muscular dystrophy and would get the other neighborhood children together to put on skits, dance routines and read poetry. The point is that the people who lose their lives to such senseless hate crimes are real people with names and real lives, family and
friends who love them and whose lives will never be the same after their loved one’s murder. A week ago today 9 innocent people were murdered at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina while worshipping only to conjure the pain of a violent history of attacks on Black Churches where Blacks are most vulnerable. The very idea speaks to a complete and total disrespect and disregard of God and the church. These people who do this obviously are sociopaths of some sort without conscience. Yet they have been allowed to go about their lives virtually unnoticed until after their behavior destroys lives. The nine who died at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal is amongst a long list of attacks targeting Black Churches in the United States. A number of them involved the burning of the Churches by the Ku Klux Klan. Perhaps it’s because it’s where we are most vulnerable. Church is like home to us. 1. On November 5, 2008 Macedonia Church of God in Christ in Springfield, Mass., was set on fire shortly after the election of President Obama 2. On January 8, 1996 in Knoxville, Tenn. Inner City Baptist Church’s sanctuary was destroyed and racial slurs were painted on the walls. 3. February 1, 1996 in Louisiana four Churches within a six-mile radius — Cypress Grove Baptist, St. Paul’s Free Baptist and Thomas Chapel Benevolent Society in East Baton Rouge as well as Sweet Home Baptist in Baker — were set on fire on the anniversary of the sit-in in Greensboro, N.C. 4. On June 21, 1995 in Manning, S.C., the Macedonia Baptist Church was set on fire by four former members of the Ku Klux Klan. 5. On June 16, 1964 in Longdale, Miss., Mount Zion A.M.E. Church parishioners were beat by the Ku Klux Klan as they were leaving a church meeting. The wood-framed church, a historic safe haven for slaves, was burned down. And of course there was the September 15, 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church that ended in the death of the four Black little girls whose names we often fail to recall, which brings us back to the victims of the Charleston, SC, Church Massacre. Black lives do matter. Knowing the names of those who were killed is important in taking responsibility for acknowledging their significance and contribution to their communities. Sharonda Coleman-Singleton who was a reverend and also coached the girls track team at Goose Greek High School was a mother of three. The Rev. Dr. Daniel Simmons Sr., 74, was a pastor at the Emanuel AME Church He was taken to a local hospital and died in the operating room. Tywanza Sanders was a 26-year-old recent graduate of Allen University in Columbia, S.C who reportedly jumped in front of a relative when the shooting began in order to

She was an 87-year-old longtime member of the Emanuel AME Church. Jackson’s cousin Ethel Lance was also killed during the shooting. Ethel Lance, 70, retired as a Gilliard Center employee but picked up hours working as a church janitor. We have to question why we are still dealing with hate crimes and or crimes as a result of racism so many years after our emancipation, civil rights advancement and generations of Blacks who are acculturated into mainstream America. I believe that we have been mislead/ mis-educated to believe that others will follow the law and be law abiding citizens and therein embrace us with open arms. For those who have lived long enough to
have experienced racism up front and personal, or those who watched the freedom fighters attacked on television, or read the historical accountings, saw the images of racial abuse and brutality, those who remember Rodney King and more recently have witnessed numerous accountings of the police attacks against unarmed Black men, it must resonate loud and clear that racism and or hate crimes do not end with laws but rather a change of heart and mind. Until white America chooses to accept people based on the content of their character they will always be able to find a reason to discriminate against others; Blacks, Jews, Muslims, LBGT, women etc. Blacks in America have known and experienced a history of violence, which they continue to live. It doesn’t matter that Barack Obama was elected the first Black President as long as the type of racially motivated hate crimes continue is proof that racism exist. America has a lot of work to do. If discrimination in the areas of education, employment, technology, housing and so on exist and people refuse to or fail to change their preconceived ideas about Blacks, the horrors from racially motivated practices will continue to impact America. Blacks owe themselves first to make it their responsibility to do whatever it takes to see to it that they take back their lives and work to change the relationship with America and the world. Second, our responsibility to ourselves is to learn our history, rewrite it, own it and teach it to our children—each generation. We reserve the right to tell our story our way. Finally we must commit that we will not standby and let anybody destroy our families, communities and or race.

The faces of the tech industry do not reflect the demographics of their clientele, and, according to Rev. Jesse Jackson, it’s time for that to change. During Silicon Valley to LaSalle Street: Life Beyond the Edmund Pettus Bridge convention, Jackson unveiled the PUSH Excel Tech Center and brought in executives from Google, Facebook and Hewlett-Packard to address the lack of diversity in at technology companies. Very few people of color hold c-suite positions at major tech companies, but some companies are responding to calls to diversify their workforce, Jackson said. For example, Hewlett-Packard is seeking more board members of color, and Apple will grant $40 million in scholarship funding to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, he said. “They said they could not find black engineers, but they were looking in the wrong places,” Jackson said during a June 20 press conference. “As shareholders, we have the right to go to the meetings and raise some concerns, and we’re beginning to see some action, some movement taking place.” In addition to calling on companies to diversify their workforce and leadership, Rainbow PUSH opened its PUSH Excel Tech Center June 19 at the Rainbow PUSH headquarters, 930 E. 50th St. The center, launched in partnership with Chicago-based tech center BLUE1647, aims to provide training, jobs and internships to underserved communities in skills

Bronzeville native brings
nature indoors By Tatiana-Walk-Morris Defender Contributing Writer
With a growing need for green spaces in urban areas, one Bronzeville native is bringing walls to life. Mac Gordon, co-founder and executive director of Grow Fancy, started the California-based company last year. Grow Fancy creates customized vertical gardens, also known as “living walls,” from which vegetation grows, either indoors or outside. Gordon, who graduated in 2013 with a law degree from Purdue University, said his green thumb didn’t emerge until a few years ago. Living Walls by Mac Gordon. The company will also be working with State Representative Ken Dunkin (Illinois 5th district) to set up living walls not just for businesses, but for communities as well, Gordon added. “A lot of companies use it as an artistic type of feel, but what we wanted to do was … not make it seem like it was an amenity that only
companies have access to, but everybody can bring it indoors,” Gordon said. Getting the company started in California was easy due to multiple cities having issues with smog, but the company is still developing other projects in Chicago in hopes that it’ll catch on in other cities, Gordon said. “Chicago’s one of those cities [that is] always at the forefront of development,” Gordon said. “Once people start seeing it they won’t see it as a Midwest thing or a West Coast thing, this is something that can be done everywhere.” One hurdle to implementing living walls is cost. The cost for a small wall could be a few hundred dollars, but it could be used to grow vegetables at home, ultimately saving costs in the long run, Gordon said. For lower income communities, the living walls would be more of a teaching tool to learn how to develop a garden and maintain plants, Gordon said. Ultimately, the goal for Grow Fancy is to give sustainable living walls to clients and help bring a breath of fresh air to urban communities. Although Grow Fancy is a business, Gordon sees it as more of a team effort aiming for a better environment for all. “It’s not solely on living walls that we’re focusing on, but more so having more fruits and vegetables and clean air available,” Gordon said. “It has to get done sooner or later. And if it doesn’t, the lifespan is going to be decreasing very, very soon.”

Terminator “The Threat Has Evolved” Experience Hits Navy Pier By Arionne Nettles Defender Contributing Writer
When the Arnold Schwarzenegger uttered the famous line “I’ll be back” in 1984 as the character of a robotic assassin and bodyguard, he and the makers of “The Terminator” series must have meant it. Over thirty years later, Schwarzenegger is

As the Terminator T-800 Cyberdyne Systems Model 101, the acting veteran has consistently wowed audiences—drawing them into the mystique, strength, and drama of the series’ action-filled plot lines. Now, fans are gearing up to see
“Terminator Genisys,” the fifth film of the American science fiction franchise and on June 20, those in Navy Pier got a little taste of what is to come. As honorary members of “the Human Resistance”—the task force that fights to save mankind—attendees learned firsthand about the Terminator models that go up against Skynet, the series’ antagonistic militia that out to end humanity. Round the World
Black Ethiopian Jews Ask: Do their Lives Matter? By Kai EL’Zabar Defender Executive Editor When I mentioned to my publisher that I had been invited to Israel as a journalist, she was none too happy. She said, “Kai they are attacking people who look like you over there.” Her concerns were legitimate. It was as recent as April that footage emerged showing an Ethiopian Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) conscript brutally beaten by policemen directing traffic away from a suspected bomb package. The Ethiopian community had no other recourse but to take to the streets just as Black Americans have in protest, questioning whether or not Black lives matter. What emerged were the visuals of Ferguson, Baltimore and New York that filled American and international airwaves just weeks before, however, in the center of Jerusalem, the protesters weren’t African-Americans but Ethiopian Israelis. Some raised their hands high, indicating they were unarmed to the heavily armed police. Yet, still they were bloodied. The protesters – some of which have clashed with police – say Black lives don’t matter in Israel, and are seeking equal treatment under the law. So what’s life like for Ethiopian Jews living in Israel? The instigation for the protests was police brutality, but the long term inequality and racism experienced by the Black Jews has been going on forever. So the footage of the beating was merely the straw that broke the camel’s back. The Ethiopians known as the Black Jews, share birthright and are accepted as legitimate citizens. They practice the religion, speak fluent Hebrew and serve in the Israeli Defense Forces as required by the government. And yet, the disparities are all so familiar to those of Blacks in America. There are 135,000 Ethiopian Jews in Israel making up 2% of the overall population and of all Israeli Jewish citizens, Israeli Ethiopians suffer the worst mistreatment by police. Ethiopian Israelis comprise over 30 percent of the population in Israeli jails, 65% live under the poverty level, only 5% receive college degrees compare to 28% of the other populations. The good news is that deaths in custody are relatively rare yet the people are tired of incidents like one that sparked the protest, which occur more commonly than not. Just like American Black males most Ethiopian men have suffered abuse by the hand of the police. Few have not been manhandled by police. In a revealing reference to Israel’s complex hierarchy of social privilege, some Ethiopians to whom we spoke, shared that they were often mistaken by police as the underclass asylum seekers from Eritrea and South Sudan. This discrimination regardless the explanation is unacceptable. “But friction with police is only one manifestation of a broader phenomenon,” says Efrat Yerday who lives in Beer Sheba, and
community leaders. The political leaders have voiced their condemnation along with Prime Minister Netanyahu, who met with the beaten soldier, apologized saying, ”We cannot accept racism,” and established a Ministry to eradicate racism. Is that enough? The Israeli Ministry of Education immediately put forward age-appropriate lesson plans on racism and violence. Further the Israeli newspaper Haaretz published documents quoting Israeli officials referring to data that indicates “over-enforcement” in the Ethiopian community and admitting most Ethiopian youths see police as the enemy. And the question is, what’s the surprise? The report almost mirrors the America Black experience except the Black Jews did not arrive as slaves. After years of not being accepted, once they were, they arrived as citizens. So what’s next? Suddenly money will be found for cultural awareness programs, for recruitment of Ethiopian officers and for research, which will be call for more programs, more recruitment and more research. The beating of the soldier will be remembered in association with the Prime Minister’s apology Meanwhile, the Ethiopians will remain between a rock and a hard place in the Promised Land and continuing to wander in the desert. Efrat Yerday, columnist “The Hottest Pale in Hell” magazine and activist photo credit- Kai ELZ is a MA student at the department of Politics & Governance at Ben Gurion University of the Negev. She is currently researching development programs of the foreign ministry of Israel in Ethiopia and is a columnist at the magazine, “The Hottest Place in Hell”-ha-makom.co.il. She writes about everyday racism. “My concern is the systematic racism that marks us for failure, forced to exist in poverty and reduces our opportunities to advance from the state of poverty imposed upon us by the discrimination we experience everyday,” she expressed passionately. She continued, “It’s the everyday discrimination which is accepted that must be addressed. This is the institutionalized racism that maintains our station here in Israel.” Efrat is actively pursuing what she advocates as an activist and the former spokeswoman for the Israeli Association for Ethiopian Jews, an advocacy organization that addresses the racism she describes head on. She says, “Racism is not, including our experience, in the history of the Jews; it’s not telling our story. Are we not Jews? If we are required to serve equally as is the next Jew then we must share equally in the benefits.” She pointed out that racism is why less than half of Ethiopian students successfully graduate from high school, and less than a quarter of Ethiopian students have good enough grades to attempt a university degree. Efrat explained that despite few exceptions, Ethiopian culture and the Ethiopian

strands of Judaism in Israel are largely ignored or willfully eroded by the Israeli mainstream. Israeli rabbinical institutions have fought viciously against recognizing Ethiopian kahens, or spiritual leaders of the community, as fellow rabbis. Now, the first generation of the kahens is dying out, and most of the new Ethiopian rabbis and religious scholars are products of a standardized state religious education system, which allows for less cultural autonomy. The Ethiopian community has also suffered a number of abuses unique to them. No other Israeli minority experienced their women being prescribed Depo Provera, without telling them it was a contraceptive drug. In 2013, state clinics did exactly that resulting in a decrease in the birthrate in the Ethiopian community by half in just a decade. Fifteen years earlier, newspapers revealed that blood donations from Ethiopians to the Israeli blood bank were unceremoniously flushed away immediately on reception, on the untested assumption they were likely to carry HIV. This provoked the largest protests in the community’s history, and the recent protest resonated their cry, “Is our blood good only for your wars?” The response of the Israeli authorities to mounting discontent, at least regarding police brutality, has been addressed. The officer captured in the video was suspended that same day, and much of the leadership of the Ethiopian community is engaged in a long-term consultation process between the top brass of the police and a wide range of

Black America Cooks
©2015 Donna Battle Pierce
By Donna Battle Pierce I didn’t need an excuse to make my favorite quick bread. In fact, I preheat my oven for banana bread so frequently, my kitchen counter feels bare without various stages of the tropical fruit evolving from green to bright yellow to the perfect shade of blackening yellow for today’s baking, I’m always surprised at how inexpensively we’re able to purchase the tropical fruit, although my grandmother’s stories make our banana bunches seem expensive. I’ve spoken often about my Mobile, Alabama’s family’s access to free ripe bananas tossed off ships in the Gulf port before the more prized unripened bananas were transferred to refrigerated rail cars traveling north, and west. I first tweaked my passed-down recipe a few years ago for this healthier banana berry loaf after reading about a berry consumption study finding significant heart health benefits for the berry eaters among almost 94,000 women between the ages of 25 to 42 over a period of 18 years. “The sooner people start the type of diet that includes a higher intake of blueberries and strawberries, the better,” said the physician who led the study, Dr. Eric Rimm, now a Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition at the Harvard School
of Public Health where he serves as the Director of Cardiovascular Epidemiology. Since there’s no better time of year to find in-season blueberries at the best price at the market, I’m enjoying several times a day as a unadorned snack or mixed with unsweetened Greek yogurt for a special treat. This very tasty family favorite comes together quickly with just one special tip to keep the berries from bleeding juice into the batter: dust fresh blueberries with flour before stirring them into the batter. Charleston Tragedy from Page 2
Nikki Haley, a Republican said, “It’s time to move the flag from the Capitol grounds.” She went on to concur the events that have taken place in the past week have called upon the State House to look at things in a different way. Many feel the Confederate flag should be taken down because of what it represents but should it really? Should we erase the history of struggle, death and sacrifice that Black people have endured at the hands of Southern whites, who hang the flag with ancestral pride? The Confederate flag reminds us of what continues to exist amongst us everyday and it will take a great deal more than removing a symbol that magnifies this history among white ‘supremacists’ to rid the world of what it represents. Making the Confederate Flag illegal will not erase the red blood shed that shook a nation back into the realms of reality. To do so requires two thirds of the South Carolina General Assembly to vote on amending the resolution to remove the flag. In a statement issued by Rainbow PUSH Coalition founder, Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. this massacre is closely compared to the four little girls killed in the Birmingham, Alabama church bombing in 1963. “Not unlike the economic and political context of Birmingham, the nation and its leadership are still failing to see, understand and come to grips with the underlying economic and political circumstances that led to such a tragedy,” he said. “This young white man, whoever he is, did not originate terrorism. He is merely reflecting decades and
outside in respect and prayer. This tragic situation sparked memory a long history that many would like to sweep under the rug. Chicago became home to many Black Southerners seeking a better life during the Great Migration from 1916 to 1970. Although, many relocated to the North for a better economic and quality of life—segregation and racism was openly present. The Chicago Riot of 1919 was historical one of the deadliest race riots in an American city and left 38 people dead (23 blacks and 15 whites); 537 injured (342 blacks, 195 whites); and 1,000 people homeless. Today, nearly 80 percent of African Americans could potentially trace an ancestor who was brought through Charleston. South Carolina was the only state founded exclusively as a slave colony. Between 1880 and 1950, mobs of white men tortured and murdered approximately 3,500 African Americans, often before crowds of spectators, to avenge suspected violations of the social and legal code. There were 164 lynchings of African Americans between 1877 and 1950 in South Carolina. Why the brief history lesson? Because although, there is no visible Jim Crow signs hanging over our restrooms, water fountains, or the separation of seating on our public transportation lines—there is still a significant racial divide. On Monday, a press conference was called by South Carolina State legislators for the removal of the Confederate battle flag. Governor
centuries of institutional and active political terrorism. There were 164 lynching’s of African Americans between 1877 and 1950 in South Carolina.” The US Supreme Court on Thursday ruled 5-4 that Texas did not violate the Constitution’s free-speech provision when it denied a request from the 30,000-member Sons of Confederate Veterans group for a state-approved Confederate flag license plate. As the nation calls the 21-yearold white young adult, Dylann Roof a white supremacist—there is nothing supreme about executing nine innocent lives. At his court hearing on Friday, Roof was arraigned on nine counts of murder as family members of the victims spoke directly to the shooter in expressing their forgiveness and hope that ‘God may have mercy’ on him. The son of murdered victim, Myra Thompson appeared at the hearing. ”I forgive you, my family forgives you,” said Anthony Thompson. “We would like you to take this opportunity to repent. Do that and you’ll be better off than you are right now.” In a radio interview on Monday, President Obama addressed the debate of race relations on a podcast with Marc Maron. “Racism, we are not cured of it. And it’s not just a matter of it not being polite to say nigger in public,” he said. “That’s not the measure of whether racism still exists or not. It’s not just a matter of overt discrimination. Societies don’t, overnight, completely erase everything that happened 200 to 300 years prior,” said Obama. Yet, somehow we Blacks must keep working at it.

Chicago Blackhawks
Blackhawks Changing the Face of Chicago Hockey By Arionne Nettles Defender Contributing Writer
Chicagoans are united through winning. Triumph—and subsequently pride—is what makes a big sports city and now, professional hockey is having its turn at adding to the city’s legacy. On June 15, the Chicago Blackhawks were victorious against the Tampa Bay Lightening and for the third time since 2010, the team won Stanley Cup Championship. Although it wasn’t the first win in recent years, this year’s victory hit close to home—both literally and figuratively—as it was the first championship acquired at home in 77 years. “We play for the best fans in the world,” says Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews. “It’s amazing to be able to hoist [the Stanley Cup], but to do it on home ice and in front of our fans, to share this with you guys, the best fans in the world—it doesn’t get any better than this.” Chicagoans feel connected to the Blackhawk’s winning record and a number of new fans have emerged as a result. With the National Hockey League’s highest honor behind them, the Blackhawks’ home fan base is growing past the 3.48 million mark—the largest out of all HNL teams. With an impressive 348 percent growth rate in fans from everywhere, 50 percent of all Chicagoans considered themselves Blackhawks fans by 2014—that’s up from just 8 percent in 2007. Blacks are included in the group of new fans who are eager to learn more about the sport of hockey, which is actually becoming more diverse. Over the 38-year span between 1957 and 1995, only 27 black
players played in the NHL. However, 22 black players were included in the 43 minority players that played in the 2013-2014 season alone. This change also hit home in the 2014-2015 season with the addition of black Swedish player Johnny Oduya to the Blackhawks. After becoming true fans, many of these recruits are vocally expressing excitement and genuine interest for the Blackhawks. After the video of fan Bill Dodds exclaiming, “They’ve got black people loving hockey!” went viral, the Chicagoan told WGN that he started following the sport after the Blackhawks’ 2010 win, fell in love with it, and now understands how the “quick sport” actually works. On June 18, an estimated 2 million people were packed into Soldier Field and stationed along the Blackhawks’ parade route to celebrate the most recent championship. Chicago artist Andra Wiley was among the revelry at the rally and felt that the atmosphere was reminiscent of another famous winning streak in Chicago. “It is so amazing see all the fans going crazy at the rally,” says Wiley. “The Hawks bring back what we had in ’96 with the Chicago Bulls and their first three championships—a lot of unity and all races in one place having a great time. I’m so glad to have been a part of both the 2013 and 2015 celebrations, and I plan to be there next year.” For longtime Blackhawks fans like entrepreneur Eugene McIntosh, celebrating the team’s Stanley Cup wins have become tradition—one that he now sees as a part of Chicago’s overall culture and is not expected to end any time soon. “The Hawks represent everything about Chicago—hard work,
dedication and grind,” says McIntosh. “It’s like we’re one big family when our teams are in season. We go through the blood, sweat and tears with them so it’s only right that the city goes crazy when we bring a championship home. I’ve been to the last two parades and I’m looking forward to more.” As sport lovers, many new fans are just happy to be a part of the growing legacy and to experience history being made. For 11-year-old John W. Anthony, the Blackhawks rally in Soldier Field was his first hockey event, although he loves watching sports with his dad, John D. Anthony, member of Illinois House of Representatives. Although the youngest Anthony was looking forward to seeing Blackhawks players such as Patrick Kane, he was just “excited to be with dad” at such a lively and fun event.
About the Black Blackhawk...
He’s big, he’s intimidating, he’s Dustin Byfuglien (left). Constructed like a brick house, the Minnesota native can play either wing and has experience as a defense man which is where his heavy shot extends from. While his puck movement is improving, Byfuglien has to develop a nasty streak more often and get goaltenders off of their game like he did to Roberto Luongo last year. Chicago’s depth and contract issues may turn him into a dispensable piece, but Byfuglien will gather attention as a possible trade option. L’ Vernon Gaiter
March 27, 1921 – June 22, 2013 Father there is hardly a day that goes by that I don’t think of you, the things that you went thru in your life and you still stayed strong, your generation is one that should always be remembered, I thank you for the things that were provided to me that people take for granted shelter, food and clothing, People loved and used you because you were a good man always smiling and joking and providing words of hope to individuals who needed it.
You were the provider of eight children and numerous grand-children. You always thought about others before yourself. There are many traps in the world for men like you because you dared to care. In the very short time we were together, I learned a lot, men like you belong in a Hall of Heroes. You took care of what mattered to you… family & community. Your Loving Son, Ivonee Gaiter

A Vacation You Can Afford Considering the slight rise in the economy, many African Americans will make travel plans to visit new and exciting destinations around the country. Although the economy is “rebounding,” savvy travelers will wait for the “best deal” rather than make plans too far in advance. Additionally, African Americans have the propensity to “drive” to their vacation destination or enjoy tourist attractions within our fair city, Chicago. With summer travel and honeymoon destinations on the minds of our readers, The Chicago Defender is producing a special Travel Supplement titled “Relax...A Vacation You Can Afford.” Take part in this special edition by advertising in The Chicago Defender. Our newspaper will feature editorials on popular, economical destinations and attractions locally (in Chicago), nearby (within a 5-7 hour drive), across the country, as well as abroad in our special insert (supplement) on Wednesday, July 1st! A special section will be devoted to popular destinations and resorts for honeymooners.
