NFL Draft Week: How Does it Impact Black Chicago? By Mary L. Datcher The prospect of a child developing his or her talent and potential is the dream of most parents. It is the glue that can hold not only a household together, but also a community. In African-American history, the dreams of many young Black youth center on athletics and entertainment. The goals of achieving fame in athletics or entertainment often overshadows dreams about other important professions such as becoming a teacher, an attorney, a physician, an engineer or a sports agent. Many of these professions lay the foundation for building a solid base. The estimated revenue of the NFL Association is $327 million; however, in real numbers, overall among the 32 league teams, the combined total is an estimated $10 billion dollars. Players’ salaries can range from the minimum of $400,000 to over $22 million driving the league to produce much more revenue than the other professional athletic associations. Often, young men become overnight millionaires, catapulting their careers and lifestyles in a world that is inaccessible to their peers. This week, Chicago will host for the NFL Draft week festivities. The city hasn’t had this honor since the 1964 draft was held here. Back in the day, the draft was a simple 24-hour process between rival team owners selecting collegiate stars for their team rosters. Now, it has become a major week-long production that rivals the same media production as Super Bowl but without the quirky, high priced commercials and half-time fanfare. How does the local economy benefit outside of the hospitality industry centralized in the immediate downtown and Michigan Avenue shopping district? The better question is how does the business economy benefit in the same communities that some of the Black athletes are from? This major task of solidifying the tourism and attraction business is led by Choose Chicago, the nonprofit organization that is responsible for raising funds and private donations under the close management of the City of Chicago. Chicago Defender reached out to Choose Chicago to request an estimated dollar amount that is projected from the NFL Draft week festivities going to local businesses and the hospitality industry, but the request has gone unanswered. Since the Defender couldn’t nail down any projections on ROI (return of investment) from them, the next concern is how does this event benefit the young Black student players from the inner-city community? In negotiation with the NFL Association, one of the main attractions was the city’s eagerness to offer up parkland to build ‘Draft Town’ – the beautifully decorated tent housing situated on prime property in Grant Park. This location is a wonderful way for the public to connect to the activities surrounding draft week and it’s free for those who attend. There are youth clinics that have invited key youth
football programs and their top young players to participate, but how many of these camps are based in the inner-city versus suburban area camps? Chicago Jokers Football Camp is a program that has groomed young players from ages 8-14 years old for the past 14 years on the West Side. The program is run by Eric McClendon, affectionately known as Coach Mac, who utilizes the St. Lutheran Church gym every Saturday for the Spring and Summer camp schedule. With close to 100 students in the football camp, he makes sure his players are treated with just as much respect and priority as more high profile youth football camps. “You have your suburban Blacks and you have Black people based in the city. The majority of the professional athletes are from the
suburbs. They really won’t go to the city areas or the agents won’t allow them to pursue the inner city programs. If there is someone who can reach out to the professional athletes or to the NFL to let the players know about the inner city kids, it would benefit players and the parents. Even though the kids are from the inner city, they do look up to the professional ball players,” said McClendon. There hasn’t been much of an outreach initiative from the NFL Association or the City of Chicago to involve inner city football camps such as the Chicago Jokers. With basketball being the focus and direction to help curve some of the violence that has plagued Black communities, football can sometimes take a backseat. Coach McClendon feels that some of the city’s best young high school basketball players had their initial athletic beginnings playing in youth football camps. Coach McClendon explains, “A lot of our kids play basketball when they move on to high school. The number one high school basketball player last year was Cliff Alexander from Curie High School. He was one of our lineman on offense and defense when he played for us.” Demetrius Lewis, a parent and athletic director of a South Suburban program, takes a similar approach to working with the players in his program. He started out coaching his son’s team when his son was four years old and took a committed role for the next eight years. Now his son attends Mt. Carmel High School, ranks as one of the top high school football players in Illinois and recently was in-

ducted in the National Honor Society with a 4.0 GPA. Although, he feels the high schools and camps are there for young players, it is ultimately the responsibility of the parents to assist their talented kids with the challenges of facing key business decisions because those decisions will follow them into the hustle of the NFL. “The role models have to be in the household and we need to educate ourselves-- especially in the Black communities. A lot of minorities are behind the eight ball because we really don’t know. Outstanding athletes have scholarship offers all day, but their ACT scores are barely 15 or 16. They don’t know how important it is. They don’t realize they can take the test more than once. They have ACT prep programs out there, but instead they are buying Air Jordans. They can put the monies into an ACT prep program for the same price,” said Lewis. Many in the business feel that although the NFL draft makes up a high percentage of African American collegiate athletes, it is the responsibility of the NFL Association and the City of Chicago to coordinate community outreach to the football youth camps and inner city programs. Many of the draft hopefuls will be in town from all of over the country for a few days and after a short break, they will soon be adjusting to their new home teams. No one understands this process better than sports agent Tory Dandy of Relativity Sports which represents both professional and collegiate draft picks. One of his professional clients includes Chicago Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey. “I hold myself accountable in regards to doing the business with not only the client but anybody who is considered in his inner circle – that is knowledgeable about the NFL draft process. Knowledgeable about the business side of the NFL, the financial side and the blessings of what it brings. I believe in reaching further in-depth about being aware of what’s going on,” explains Dandy. Dandy has steadily become one of the leading NFL sports agents representing seven NFL draftees in this week’s ceremonies, including #1 ranked pick Jamison Winston (Florida State), #7 ranked Kevin White (West Virginia), #27 ranked Eddie Goldman (Florida State), #30 ranked Ronald Darby (Florida State), #34 ranked Nelson Agholor (Southern California), #84 ranked Paul Dawson (Texas Christian University) and #121 ranked Mike Davis (South Carolina). Being one of the few African American agents in the field, Dandy makes no secret that his mentors include sports agent veteran, Eugene Parker. Dandy adds, “We want to empower them, we want to give them the information and See NFL Draft Week , Page 17

LOCAL NEWS
Celebration of Life and Service for Civil Rights Activist Alice Tregay Civil Rights trailblazer and Chicago native Mrs. Alice Tregay passed away April 20, 2015. She was acknowledged throughout her lifetime as a pioneer for civil and human rights. Her work inspired filmmaker Craig Dudnick to produce a documentary on her life, Alice’s Ordinary People. State Senator Mattie Hunter released a formal statement on Tregay’s passing, “I was saddened to hear of the passing of civil rights activist and champion of voter education, Alice Tregay. Alice marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and fought Chicago school segregation throughout her career. During the 1990s, Alice and I joined marchers in Washington D.C. to demand Congress and the White House create jobs. Alice always stood up in the face of adversity for equality, for uplifting the common person and for fighting against racism,” said Hunter. Alice Lucille Hicks was born November 14, 1929 in Evanston, Ill. to the late Roy and Fannie (Fuller) Hicks. She was the youngest of their six children,
three of whom died before she was born. She lived in Evanston for most of her youth attending Foster School and Evanston Township High School. Alice Hicks accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Ebenezer AME Church in Evanston where she served as an usher. She stayed committed to her faith by serving in churches in Chicago where she later lived. In 1947, she married the late Vincent Lindsey and they had one daughter. In 1964, she married James Tregay and became
the loving mother of a son and another daughter. As an adult, she went back to school and attended Southeast (now Olive Harvey) Jr. College and Roosevelt University. Her life was a motivating factor for social change and community service. Tregay’s maternal instincts pushed her to be a dedicated woman whose life was spent being concerned about the welfare of her family, the community they lived in and the world at large. She and her husband James worked as partners to support people and organizations that shared their mutual concerns for social change. They did this both materially and with hands on the ground work. She became not just a follower of these changes, but also a leader. Her determination and concern for all things right are what made her a remarkable woman. Under the leadership of Al Raby and Dick Gregory, Tregay became an integral part of the group that from 1962 to 1966 protested school overcrowding See Alice Tregay , Page 17
MEETING THE EXTREME
WEATHER CHALLENGE: MICROGRIDS AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
Millions of people and businesses were thrown into darkness when Hurricane Sandy slammed the East Coast in 2012. In many areas, prolonged power outages proved highly disruptive to lives and businesses. But in other communities the power stayed on, thanks to back-up electricity sources called microgrids. With extreme weather on the rise—a fact that Illinois residents know all too well—the security of our critical power infrastructure has never been more important. And the promise of microgrids has never been greater. Microgrids are small power grids that keep power flowing in severe weather and emergency situations. These microgrids connect to the main grid but can also operate independently, creating islands of power around important infrastructure to ensure that water can flow, hospitals can function, and emergency responders can serve their communities. Leaders in various sectors agree on the importance of microgrids, and they’re pushing for legislation that provides for microgrids to be added to the Illinois power grid. Ken Bouche, COO at Hillard Heintze, one of the nation’s leading investigation and security firms, explains, “The reliability of our critical public service and healthcare functions is paramount, and we have a responsibility to explore the untapped potential of microgrids to keeping power flowing when and where it’s needed most.” In recognition of microgrids’ importance, Senate Bill 1879— ComEd’s Future Energy Plan—allows for the creation of

six microgrids on the ComEd grid in northern Illinois. These grids would service nearby public facilities and infrastructure that are integral to healthcare, homeland security, transportation and water services. ComEd’s President and CEO Anne Pramaggiore explains further, “Because the huge potential of microgrids in securing critical infrastructure is becoming increasingly clear, microgrids are a key feature of our bill. As ComEd strengthens the reliability and the efficiency of the grid through smart grid advancements, it makes sense to continue to build upon these successes by fortifying the security and the resiliency of the power system in order to withstand unexpected challenges.” Beyond their security benefits, microgrids have the potential to use a variety of supply sources, including low-emission, clean energy generation such as solar and battery storage. Indeed, microgrids are part of a broader series of renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives in ComEd’s Future Energy Plan. This includes community solar projects that will make clean solar energy more accessible for ComEd customers; the construction of 5,000 electric vehicle charging stations aimed at jumpstarting the Illinois electric vehicle market; and voltage optimization along the grid to more precisely control energy flow, which will create energy efficiencies and cost savings. Improved energy efficiency, more customer savings and a cleaner energy future for Illinois—that’s ComEd’s Future Energy Plan. And that’s a safer, smarter power infrastructure for communities and companies throughout Illinois.

CHICAGO DEFENDER POWERED BY REAL TIMES MEDIA, INC.
E NOTES By Kai EL’Zabar
Defender Executive Editor Is it me or does the obvious question regarding the untimely death of Freddie Gray seem to be skirted around? I’ve looked at the tapes, I’ve listened to the various accountings and I have also read them. Interestingly enough I find the accounting of Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlins Blake perplexing. In an interview with CNN journalist Chris Cuomo, she accounts the timeline leading up to Freddie Gray’s demise. When she gets to the footage captured at 8:54, which clearly shows the Baltimore police officers assisting him up off the ground where he had laid, she says the most insensitive remark. As they lift him we can hear him moaning from pain. They get him upright and commence to carry him one officer on each side holding him up by his shoulders dragging him because he’s unable to use his legs. It’s apparent to observers those present at the time (some of whom yell out at the officers “why’d you use a Taser on him he didn’t resist, he can’t walk) and those of us watching the video can see that he cannot stand up on his own. He is led to the patty wagon whereupon we see the police lift him up into the van his head is bend down. We see that he bears weight on one leg but the other looks broken. So he’s not paralyzed. However the Mayor cites, “ . . . We know that he was able bodied,” and that’s when Chris Cuomo, interrupts her and asks, “Mayor is that just language that you’re using because he doesn’t look like he’s able bodied?” So there you have it, the Mayor, along with other representatives of the police department and the city stating as safely as they can within the legal context that protects them. Police Commissioner told reporters that Freddie Gray did not get timely medical care after he was arrested and was not buckled into a seat belt while being transported in a police van. We know that our police employees failed to get him medical attention in a timely manner multiple times.” As videos surface capturing different angles of the Freddie Gray’s arrest it be-
comes clearer that the officers involved have not disclosed the whole truth. It is apparent that something transpired between the initial arrest and putting Freddie in the van. That’s the best you can do? A bystander tells how she heard Freddie screaming out in pain and saying at some point he said, “I can’t breathe.” She’s heard on the video yelling, “His leg looks broke.” More interesting is how the police seem to skip some of the most important concerns like why was he pursued in the first place, when he was displaying no menacing behavior, no visible weapon in hand and they had no reason to stop and frisk him. He was arrested because the police found a switchblade in his pocket. Next just how did he become so incapacitated that he had to be helped to the police van? And finally how did he incur a spinal cord so severely severed? The two sides of the law. When the police are investigated they are not contained until charged and interrogated but instead they are assumed in the right having acted legally according to the situation. They are given a timeline in which they can corroborate their story before reported to the media and police authorities. And per usual though the six officers involved have been placed on leave with pay, no statements from them have been issued. People are frustrated 50 years after Selma and the acknowledgement of that has come to pass. We are sick and tired of the same thing happening over and over again. Assault after assault, death after death of black lives at the hands of white police. “We are sick tired of being sick and tired,” ~ Fannie Lou Hamer. It is not acceptable. And so it is with the authorities that get on their various platforms, from the safety of the newsrooms, podiums or Eiffel towers pontificating how the violence spilling in the streets of Baltimore where thousands have gathered in protest does nothing to further or advance change. We’ve come a long way on the surface since the first slaves arrived on American shores in 1607. Laws have changed to recognize the rights of Black people and yet the hearts and minds of many whites have not been transformed by time and knowledge. Grounded in fear and the need to dominate and control we witness the hatred and racism daily. There is no break from being Black, not then not today. We’ve tried it your way, we tried the MLK peaceful route, we tried the education way, we tried segregation, separate but equal and some have tried to ignore it. None have succeeded. So here’s the question. What will advance change?

Loretta Lynch Wins Confirmation As Attorney General By Erica Werner Associated Press WASHINGTON -- Loretta Lynch won confirmation as the nation’s first black female attorney general Thursday from a Senate that forced her to wait more than five months for the title and remained divided to the end. The 56-43 vote installs Lynch, now U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York at the Justice Department, to replace Eric Holder. Holder has served in the job throughout the Obama administration, becoming a lightning rod for conservatives who perceived him as overly political and liberal, and even getting held in contempt of Congress. Lynch, 55, is seen as a no-nonsense prosecutor and has wide law enforcement support. The issue that tore into her support with Republicans was immigration and her refusal to denounce President Barack Obama’s executive actions limiting deportations for millions of people living illegally in this country. Questioned on the issue at her confirmation hearing in January, she said she believed Obama’s actions were reasonable and lawful. Democrats angrily criticized Republicans for using the issue against her, saying an executive branch nominee could not be expected to disagree strongly with the president who appointed her, but Republicans were unapologetic. Announced GOP presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said Lynch’s comments rendered her “unsuitable for confirmation as attorney general of the United States. That was a shame.” Yet after returning from the campaign trail to rail against Lynch on the Senate floor Thursday, Cruz was the only senator absent when the vote was called. He voted “no” on a procedural vote earlier in the day, which spokeswoman Amanda Carpenter insisted “was the vote that mattered.” She did not explain why Cruz missed the confirmation vote, but an invitation on his campaign website showed he had a fundraiser in Dallas to attend. Still, Lynch won the support of 10 Republicans, more than expected in the days heading into the vote. In a surprise, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., was among those voting “yes.” Obama said the U.S. would be better off with Lynch. In a speech to his advocacy group, Organizing for Action, Obama said Lynch had established credibility with both law enforcement and civil rights groups, adding that he wanted to work with her to rebuild trust between police and communities in the U.S. “She’s spent her life fighting for the fair and equal justice that’s the foundation of our democracy,” Obama said. Lynch grew up in Durham, North Carolina, the daughter of an English teacher and a minister. Her father, Lorenzo Lynch, 83, watched from the Senate visitors’ gallery Thursday as his daughter won confirmation. Afterward, he told reporters: “The good guys won. And that’s what’s been happening in this country all along, even during slavery.” The long delay in confirming Lynch since she was nominated in November incensed Democrats, with Obama himself weighing in last week to lament Senate dysfunction and decry the wait as “crazy” and “embarrassing.” There were various reasons for the delay, most recently a lengthy and unexpected impasse over abortion on an unrelated bill to combat sex trafficking that www.chicagodefender.com
“What my colleagues are saying today is it doesn’t matter if you are qualified ... that makes no difference. We have a new test. You must disagree with the president who nominates you,” said Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo. “This defies common sense.” Yet in the end even the Senate’s hardliners on immigration refrained from trying to drag out the final vote into Friday. Lynch has been the top prosecutor since 2010 for a district that includes Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Long Island, a role she also held from 1999 to 2001. She’ll take over a Justice Department focused on fighting terrorism and cyberattacks, and consumed in a national debate over law enforcement’s treatment of Black men.
Down Payment or Closing Costs Keeping You From Owning a Home? McConnell insisted on finishing before moving to Lynch. Yet Democrats controlled the Senate when Lynch was nominated last November and could have brought up her nomination for a vote then. They held off with the GOP’s encouragement after being routed in the midterm elections and spent the time confirming judges instead. There was an expectation that Republican leaders would move Lynch’s nomination swiftly this year, especially since many GOP members of Congress are eager to be rid of Holder. Instead, the nomination became tangled in the dispute over Obama’s executive actions on immigration and seemed to stall. There was never any real doubt that she would win confirmation in the end, but going into the vote only five Republicans had declared their support. In addition to McConnell, the Republicans who ended up voting “yes” were Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, Thad Cochran of Mississippi, Susan Collins of Maine, Rob Portman of Ohio, Jeff Flake of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Mark Kirk of Illinois and Orrin Hatch of Utah. Ayotte, Portman, Johnson and Kirk all face voters next year. In a statement, McConnell said Holder’s Justice Department “has too often put partisan and ideological considerations ahead of the rule of law. It is a department desperately in need of new direction and leadership. I am hopeful that Ms. Lynch will use her lengthy professional experience and skills to provide the new leadership, reform and improved relations with the Congress.” In floor debate ahead of the vote, Democrats lambasted Republicans for opposing Lynch on immigration.

Spike Lee’s Film Sparks Controversy: Chicago? Chiraq? By Robert T. Starks The media constantly reminds us that Black life is dispensable all over the world. Africans are caught up in the struggle between Islamic Jihadists and Christians in West Africa and have become victims of Boko Haram and other terrorists where thousands of Africans have died. In Haiti and other areas of South America and the Caribbean, people of African descent suffer from poverty, hunger and racist immigration policies resulting in thousands of deaths each year. Africans caught up in the so-called Middle East are instantly targeted for slaughter in a country like Libya after the assassination of its leader Muammar Gaddafi. Unfortunately, America was founded on the premise that Black life was expendable in a system of enslavement. The only value the enslaved persons had to the slaveholder was their physical prowess, which made them the best labor, the abusive use of them for perversions and their ability to produce more children to increase the labor pro-
duction or as property to be sold for profit. This was America’s greatest sin in spite its founding based on Christian principles of human rights and democracy that respect all men. This originating sin of devaluing and total disregard of Black life is documented in Article 1 section 2 of the U.S. Constitution clearly defined Blacks as: [slaves count as 3/5 persons] remains essential throughout the American economic, political and cultural DNA. Since African people were captured violently, and treated violently thereafter it has been a social reality that has defined our existence in this country. Often

compared to chattel is a misnomer because the owners of such never abused their horses, cattle or sheep as they did Black people. From the patty rollers (patrollers) and the overseers on the plantations to modern day policemen, Black men have been the target of those guardians of White America by keeping Black people in their place by the most inhumane means. The Chicago ethos is an example of this urban socio-cultural attitude. While it is clear that continued escalation of Blackon-Black crime must be addressed and abolished as well as white police abuse towards
blacks. it also must be examined within the context of the systemic cause and effect. The entire society must be put under the microscope. We cannot attribute Blackon-Black crime to the actions of a group of Black thugs; it is the result of a system of racism and self-hate,” said Larry Kennon, civil rights attorney. We cannot deny the existence of Blackon-Black crime or spout excuses for such behavior. Chicago is not alone in this experience. How we address it is equally important to the outcome we wish to achieve. It is incumbent upon us as parents, teachers, community leaders and concerned people that we return to the faith, love of self and the African mantra of survival and the transmittance of ethics to subsequent generations. Thus, when filmmaker Spike Lee arrived in Chicago last week, he immediately sparked a firestorm of controversy when he announced he is preparing to make a m ovie See Chicago? Chiraq? , Page 16

Bringing Beauty to Bronzeville: Vershawn Ward
By Mary L. Datcher DEFENDER STAFF REPORTER One of the most beautiful things to see a human body do is to orchestrate magic through the art of dance. The formation of movements and rhythms can be as seductive as a musician high off his own melody. Whether you have a natural born talent or just enjoy the freedom that dance embodies, it represents EXPRESSION. Vershawn Ward understands the importance of expression in the highest form as the executive artistic director of Red Clay Dance Company based in Chicago’s Bronzeville community. She has a diverse background, holding an MFA in dance from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and was the first recipient of a BFA in dance from Chicago’s Columbia College. With a long list of credits to her body of work, Ward received the 2009 Choreography Award from Harlem Stage NYC and was honored as the 3 Arts recipient in 2013. Preparing for her first evening-length work “riflekShens in 6” in collaboration with fellow 3 Arts award winning photographer Marta Garcia, Chicago Defender had a chance to talk with Vershawn Ward. CD: What inspired you to start Red Clay Dance Company? VW: I had an opportunity to spend part of a summer in Martha’s Vineyard in a program called ‘The Yard.’ I was just a dancer working with a group of seasoned choreographers. After that, I traveled to Senegal for three months at a school called Maison De La Sagesse. They have an amazing program open to dancers to come to Senegal to train and learn traditional and contemporary dance. When I found out she was opening the program up to dancers outside of Africa, I applied and got in. While I was there, that’s when I thought about having a passion about traditional dance but also loved modern dance. How to fuse it together? That’s where Red Clay grew from – that passion to do more of a fusion style. The name came from my upbringing as a child. I’m originally from Mobile, Alabama. Both of my parents are from there. Just rememberwww.chicagodefender.com
ing those summers growing up and school was out so I was shipped down to Alabama. That was part of my upbringing. As artists who mold our work, it’s just like clay- molding our work into what we want it to be. The possibilities, whatever our hands make or make it -that’s what it is. CD: How did your love of
dance begin? VW: I grew up in the South Suburbs in the Matteson community. My mom put me into dance class when I was five or six years old to have a more constructive space for my energy. But my dad was an athlete, so the physical side of dance is what drew me in at first. It really expressed inside energy that I wanted to get out. I did dance for a while until 13 and then I went to Rich South High School; I wanted to get involved with sports. I took a little break and then in my junior year, I got back into it. I had a P.E. teacher who was also a dancer. She asked me why I stopped dancing and advised me that I could do both. She pulled me back into dance. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do it for a career. My parents felt I couldn’t make a living doing that, so I attended Western Illinois University as a political science major. I came back to Chicago and started at Columbia College. In between that time, I also had a child. I found myself in the city trying to work, attend school and raise my son. I was juggling but knew that dance was my passion and had to figure out a way to make a living at it. I finished at Columbia in 2002 and worked in Chicago as an independent artist for a couple of years and applied to NYU in 2005. I did it because I wanted to go to NYU to try it out. I’m someone who needed a plan. This gave me some kind of security to train my body without paying for a class. That’s always an issue as a professional dancer - how am I going to pay for class? I knew that I would be exposed to other dancers on faculty. CD: How did you end up back home in Chicago? VW: The reality of trying to start an organization in New York versus Chicago is tough. I had the support system coming back home and felt I had more resources here rather than start a new company in such a competitive city like New York. Things are so global now, so I still have the opportunity to reach out to New York and Senegal because of my experiences I had that summer. I already laid the groundwork so once the company was at a certain place where we’re ready to tour, I had those networks already established. How many artists leave and don’t come back? They get that
experience and exposure but don’t share it or bring it back to the city that created or started their interests in the arts. I also wanted to bring that back home to Chicago. CD: What are the things that your dance company offers to young students? VW: We have two programs: the Academy which is the traditional dance conservatory with dance classes in ballet, jazz or hip hop. African contemporary which is our class, we introduce that after they’ve had the foundational classes. The Academy ranges from ages 3- 14. With our partnership with After School Matters, we have our teen ensemble. They range from 14 to 17 years old, three days a week. They come and train with us in technique and choreography. We bring in guest choreographers to work with them, so it runs like a pre-professional course. This year we started to formulate building composition skills so that they can build to gain work. We talk about costumes, stage lighting and everything that is connected to the field. We realize that not everyone is going to be onstage, but they can be connected in the field some kind of way so we try to share other careers to elevate the arts. We need people to continue to support the arts with an appreciation for and understanding of what it brings to a community having a vibrant arts organization. We have our “Dance for Peace” which is our annual youth concert. Last year we added the “Community Hug Awards”
Therelationships go outside of the culture. I hope that it elevates the richness of our culture so that it influences other people to see some part of themselves in our work. CD: Is there a challenge as a woman in your profession as the head of a professional dance company? VW: I do think there is still a challenge. When I walk into the room, they still see a woman first and in the dance community it’s already a challenge. They see a woman of color, but my upbringing has always had me in very diverse situations. I was very comfortable; ever since I was a child, I‘ve been in classes with people from various backgrounds. I was never in a single cultural space. I’ve always had that openness with others. CD: How do you break through the segregated barriers in the city and in the dance industry? VW: I find that Chicago can still be a little conservative. But I think that we have the capabilities compared to a New York City and Los Angeles to thrive in a more flamboyant environment. I think we can go between the two. I don’t think the dance community here is as clear as New York. In New York, you have an Uptown or a Downtown. I think that we have ‘cultural pockets.’ There is culture in our neighborhoods so dance companies often find themselves only in the neighborhoods and sometimes that cross-pollination doesn’t happen. So how do I get someone from
Lincoln Park to come see Red Clay in Bronzeville or how do I get my kids to DePaul University to take this workshop? We need to get people to cross-over. selecting three artists and activists to honor this year which include Theaster Gates, Homer Bryant and Che Rhymefest Smith. CD: Is there a difference as a person of color versus others in your profession as a dancer? VW: How can people outside of our culture connect to this work? Our work is influenced by our culture, but it’s not exclusive to it. The piece that we’re doing about fathers and daughters – everyone can pull from that. I see a woman of color onstage; my hope is that it doesn’t become a barrier.

Family Secrets Donna Battle Pierce BLACK AMERICA COOKS
Long ago, as a newlywed visiting my grandmother in Mobile, Ala., I arrived with a spice of Old Bay Seasoning, my newest discovery. First Granny frowned. Then she took one of her deep “Lord give me patience” breaths. Granny, widowed before I was born, enjoyed a very social lifestyle as a “club woman” who liked to travel and entertain. But I appreciated her most as my lifelong cooking teacher who patiently demonstrated every detail she knew about Creole and Southern recipes. “My new in-laws introduced me to this with a note that said ‘to love, honor and Old Bay,’ I said quickly. “Everyone near the Chesapeake Bay region considers this spice blend indispensable for seafood and lots of other dishes.” By then I was speaking way too fast, blabbing about my research about Old Bay that had been created in 1939 by spice merchant, Gustav Brunn after he fled Nazi Germany. (The company was later purchased by McCormick & Company in 1990.) Granny smiled gently as I kept selling. “I’ve sampled Old Bay in my travels, dear. But, trust me... it doesn’t compare to the family secret it’s time I teach you,” she said, handing back the can with the yellow and blue label and adding…”after you

promise to keep our family spice blend strictly in the family.” I did. “Every single good cook I know from my generation makes a signature spice blend,” Granny said, as she pulled out herbs and spice jars from the cabinet. Then she added: “...including the person with Creole roots I’m sure you will find was employed by your German spice merchant if you dig deeply enough. Your “love, honor and obey” spice is fine, but it’s no comparison to dozens of other Southern and Creole family spice blends. 1 tablespoons olive oil 3 tablespoon Dijon-style mustard 2 tablespoons prepared Creole or Southern seasoning blend, see below 12 large (20-35 count) uncooked shrimp, about 1/2 pound, cleaned, deveined 1/2 lemon, sliced, optional Heat oven to 425 degrees. If using wooden skewers, soak in water about 20 minutes before threading shrimp. Place cleaned shrimp in a medium bowl. Top with mustard. Use your hands to toss shrimp, evenly coating each shrimp with mustard. Sprinkle Creole spice blend over shrimp, using hands to coat evenly. Drain skewers, if using wooden ones. Thread each skewer with three shrimp each, beginning with the tail end so that shrimp run the same way. Add oil to a large cast-iron skillet; scatter a few lemon slices in the skillet, if using. Place skewers over oil and lemons. Place skillet in the oven; roast until shrimp is firm and pink, about 8 to 9 minutes. Remove from oven. Set aside 1 minute. Pour off excess olive oil and discard. Serve shrimp on skewers as an appetizer or remove from skewers and serve over grits. Note: shop for Creole or Soulful blends in the spice section of your supermarket or in specialty shops carrying fresh herbs and spices.

SOCIETY NEWS
Pearls of Wisdom: Zeta Phi Beta Celebrates Tradition of Service By Mary L. Datcher DEFENDER SENIOR STAFF REPORTER
This past weekend, the Hyatt Regency O’Hare Hotel was invaded by the colors of royal blue and white as the sisterhood of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority held the 81st Annual Regional Leadership Conference. With over 700 members in attendance from across seven states (Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin), it was a prelude to the national leadership conference that will be held this summer in Washington, D.C. The conference, led by Great Lakes Regional Director Michelle Porter Norman, captured the essence of all that Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated embodies…to be “A Community Conscious, Action Oriented Organization.” The opening ceremony allowed guests, friends and family to get a peek into the traditional program of recognizing the respect and unity that brings together the international Greek letter Sororities and Fraternities known as the “Divine 9.” Many bonds and lifelong relationships are formed and very few are broken as members take solemn oaths to preserve and honor the mission of each organization. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated is deeply committed to honoring the mission that the five founding women members initiated on the campus of Howard University Chicago? Chiraq? from Page 8 about the continuing violence in Chicago and give it the title Chiraq. Those who trust Spike to set this film in the proper systemic milieu did not voice complaint. On the flipside the fallout is major. The very word Chiraq in reference to Chicago sends folk into a frenzy. Mayor Rahm Emanuel says he doesn’t like it because it stigmatizes communities and gives the whole city a bad name. Trust or no trust there is no way that one can address crime in the Englewood community without talking about the 60 years of city government neglect of that neighborhood. Englewood has the highest unemployment rate in the city; is the dumping ground for many released ex-convicts, including sex offenders; suffers from high illegal drug and gun trading; has one of the highest foreclosure rates in the nation; and houses some of the most neglected public schools in the city. When all of these factors
Pictured Members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority on January 16, 1920. Fast forward to what the organization stands for today -- Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood and Finer Womanhood. Throughout the opening program, each leader stressed the importance of executing the organization’s mission. Preparing for the Centennial 2020 celebration, International President Mary Breaux Wright is very focused on working with the regional leadership to energize members. “When you find an organization, a group of women you feel attached to, you gravitate to them. It’s still that final womanhood that you still have to represent in a certain way when I was growing up,” said Wright. Her role as International Presiare exposed in the movie, it will become clear that racism is a major contributing factor in the decline of Englewood. The reference to Iraq and the devastation of the country during the Iraqi war is not an odious comparison. Chicago shares some of the same characteristics. Englewood, the supposed focus of the movie, has been invaded by the city, real estate developers and the railroad industry who have together decided that this community is one that can be sacrificed for the economic good of the 1%. The invasion of illegal drug and gun purveyors used Englewood as their model neighborhood dating back to the late 1970s; thus, this neighborhood is now saturated with these crime elements because many residents see it as the only means of economic survival. Spike Lee should and will complete his film and we will see that Chiraq is indeed real whether the title is changed or not.

dent allows her to work with over 800 chapters around the world and recently bringing on new Zeta Phi Beta Sorority chapters in London, Belgium and new territories in Africa. She shares her mutual respect and support for Great Lakes Regional Director Michelle Porter Norman. A Chicago native, Michelle Porter Norman grew up on the South Side and recognized earlier as a student the importance of having positive role models. “We grew up in one of the roughest communities in Chicago -- Englewood -- and within those walls at Lindbloom Technical High School, we had mentors, teachers and counselors who instilled in us that we have important roles when we graduate from high school. Sometimes, we were the first generation in our families going off to
Pictured Members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity college. When we arrived on campus, we saw Black Greek letter organizations present,” said Norman. Throughout the evening, key speakers included Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Illinois State Director- Connie V. Pugh, Regional Chaplain Rev. W. Ann Bilbrew, National Pan-Hellenic Council of Chicago Joel Head, Central Region Syntakes of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Tiffany Hightower, Midwest Regional Director of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Dr. Mona Davenport, Honorable Judge Steven G. Watkins of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and Great Lakes Regional Director Daryl Parks of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. One of the highlights of the organization’s continued dedication to community service was recog-
nized by Awards Concepts which presented the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority with a $25,000 check. The sorority also received a special proclamation from the Village of Rosemont proclaiming April 23rd as Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Day. With the Zeta Organizational Leadership Conference right around the corner, President Wright is looking forward to a solid and positive turnout. In her feisty, enthusiastic way, the lifetime member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority adds, “I want unity. I want them to feel that they joined a sorority that is for ‘them.’ I want them to put in leaders who are there for them, not promote their own careers, but leaders that are there for Zetas. Let us smile and be together-- that true sisterhood, that would be my aim in life!”

LOCAL NEWS NFL Draft Week from Page 2 resources to truly make informed business decisions. Our philosophy is a lot different from others in this industry.” The lives of the young collegiate players that Dandy represents will change before they depart Chicago with the weight on their shoulders to do their best for their new team and for those they are depending on to make them successful. Many of them will not know that approximately 1.5 miles west of the NFL “Draft Town” and 2.5 miles west of the structure are African American communities that will not have the opportunity to celebrate in their achievements. The City of Chicago and Choose Chicago won’t reveal the amount of expenses involved in bringing the NFL Draft to town or how it will impact the revenue streams. Choose Chicago and the Chicago Sports Commission had to raise between $3 to 4 million to complete commitments to covering the demands that the league has requested. They have made assurances that Chicago taxpayers will not be burdened with the week-long production. The Mayor’s efforts to secure high profile events such as the NFL Draft week for the beautiful City of Chicago are to be commended, but Black communities and other neighboring communities would also like to feel the unique economic benefits that downtown businesses will experience. When the opportunity arises to secure the NFL Association for the following year’s Draft Week, the “ROI or return on investment” should also include the African American communities from which many of the young players have come.
Alice Tregay from Page 4 and segregation in Black neighborhoods. These protests were leveled against the Chicago School Board and its use of portable school classrooms placed in predominately African-American schools. These classrooms were nicknamed Willis Wagons by critics of Superintendent of Schools Benjamin C. Willis (1953–1966) who implemented them. It was Al Raby who brought Dr. Martin Luther King¸ Jr. to Chicago in 1966 to help with this fight. They were not only successful in getting rid of the portable classrooms, but also Superintendent Willis himself. They also worked with the American Friends Society (Quakers) to help end to housing discrimination in Chicago and its suburbs. They participated in testing realtors who would not show people of color the same housing they showed white families who had the same income and household structure. When Dr. King came to Chicago with other ministers from the Southern Christian Leadership Council, he helped with the school crisis and led peaceful marches in favor of open housing which Alice, James and their children participated. After Dr. King left Chicago, some of his fellow members of SCLC stayed behind to continue the work he started. One of them was the Reverend Jesse Jackson, Sr., who started Operation Breadbasket, now called Rainbow PUSH. Tregay worked hand-in-hand with this orga-
nization in its struggle against discrimination of people of color in the hiring practices of large companies, such as the grocery store chain A&P and Coca-Cola. During this time Tregay became more active in politics. She had done work for Black candidates when she was younger and now began running campaigns for people who shared her sense of equality for all. She managed campaigns for Aldermen William Cousins and Abner Mikva, who both later became judges. She also helped Congressman Ralph Metcalfe retain his office after Mayor Richard J. Daley ran another candidate against him because of Metcalfe’s support of civil rights. The federal building at 77 W. Jackson in Chicago is now named for Congressman Metcalfe. She worked in the campaign of President Jimmy Carter and ran the Illinois office for Vice President Walter Mondale when he campaigned for president. She also was heavily involved in the campaigns of Harold Washington, the first Black mayor of Chicago, Rev. Jesse Jackson’s campaign for president and Carol Mosley Braun who became the first African American to represent Illinois in the U.S. Senate. Tregay worked as the chief lobbyist for the Black Illinois Legislative Lobby as part of her work with The Woodlawn Organization. It was during these campaigns that she discovered voter registration as the key to a successful election and started the Political Education Division of Rainbow PUSH, becoming the director until her retirement. Re-
tirement didn’t stop her involvement in this project, however. She reinstituted the political classes with C. Betty Magness in 2011. Until her death, Tregay continued to teach upcoming generations to get out the vote. Always a hard worker, Tregay worked for the Illinois Department of Human Rights for eight years under the leadership of Director Joyce Tucker. She has been recognized for her outstanding work in civil rights and community service by numerous organizations and has received many prestigious awards, most notably one presented to her in March 2004 by a young Illinois State Senator, who in four short years would become the 44th President of the United States and the first African American to hold that office – Barack Obama. Alice Tregay was absolutely devoted to her family and friends for whom she would have done anything. She leaves to mourn her passing and celebrate her life, husband James Tregay; three children – Alice (Robert) Fluegge, David (Clare) Tregay, Dawne Emmett; six grandchildren – Derrick (Rachel) Fluegge, Adam (Janette) Hickman, Jason Hickman, Robert (Heather) Fluegge, Rachel and Erika Emmett; ten great grandchildren; brother Sanders (Karen) Hicks; and numerous cousins and friends who were also her family. Today, half of Illinois’ power comes from nuclear energy plants operating in our state. Let’s make sure these plants keep operating in the future. Some of our state’s reliable, state-of-the-art nuclear plants are at risk of closing for economic reasons. According to a State of Illinois report*, here’s what that would cost Illinois families, businesses, and communities: $1.8 billion in annual economic activity
Nearly 8,000 jobs Up to $437 million in increased wholesale electricity costs in northern Illinois in the first year Up to $18 billion in economic damages through increased carbon emissions.
However, legislation now being considered by the General Assembly in Springfield could help preserve
these facilities. This legislation would establish the Low Carbon Portfolio Standard, requiring that a portion of our energy come from sources that emit zero or low amounts of carbon, including nuclear energy. Include Zero Carbon, Reliable Nuclear Energy In Illinois’ Energy Future.
