It was 1955 in Money, Mississippi, while visiting family where 14-year-old Emmett Till, a Chicago native, was brutally murdered for allegedly flirting with Carolyn Bryant, a white woman. His assailants–the white woman’s husband and his half-brother–forced Till to carry a 75-pound cotton-gin fan to the bank of the Tallahatchie River and ordered him to take off his clothes. The two men then beat him nearly to death, gouged out his eye, shot him in the head and then threw his body, tied to the cotton-gin fan with barbed wire, into the river. Most people are aware of this ugly episode in American history. If not, then take time to research the case that benchmarked how Blacks deal with issues of extreme racism. Note that Till’s death came a year after the Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education decision outlawed segregation in education. For the first time, Blacks had the law on their side in the struggle for equality. Till’s killing resonated across the nation. White people in the North were as shocked as Blacks at the barbaric, inhumane cruelty of the killing. The national media picked up on the story and the case mobilized the NAACP, which provided a safe house for witnesses during the trial of the murderers. Unfortunately, Till’s murder was only one of thousands of similar murders in the South and though his name is not as wellknown as it should be, his case was an important turning point in America’s civil rights struggle. The mistreatment and total disregard for Black life demonstrated by Till’s murder is not too different from what Blacks witness today, considering the mounting number of deaths of young Black men in America at the hands of white police officers who technically are hired to serve and protect. So the question becomes–who are they serving and what are they protecting? In the case of Emmett Till, the racist husband Roy Bryant and accomplice, J.W. Milam, needed no excuse, but found refuge in the idea of protecting Carolyn Bryant’s honor. At

that time, a Black man in the south was taught not to look at a white woman let alone say something to her. And though Till did not grow up in the south, Chicago had its own brand of racism, so it’s hard to accept the corroborated accounting Mrs. Bryant provided–-stating that a 14-year old Emmett Till was aggressive to the point “that he grabbed her, made lewd advances and then wolf-whistled at her as he sauntered out.” Further it is also alleged that his associates dared him to ask the white woman for a date not thinking that he would. Honestly, it’s hard to swallow, when referencing the time. Blacks know that the behavior of young men was not the same as it is today. There was a decorum about them that goes against the picture that Mrs. Bryant painted for her husband. In addition, the admittance of Scott Shepherd, a former Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan in Tennessee, who grew up knowing Mrs. Bryant’s family and testified in 2004 that his parents had stated what most of the rural folks in Money knew—that the ex-beauty queen often flirted with young men both white and Black alike. So she, in fact, could have evoked Till’s behavior if he really did what she claimed. Or, she could have been agitated that he didn’t respond as she had hoped. Either way, she shared it with her husband. Shepard is now one of America’s most aggressive anti-racism campaigners. He spoke out in 2004 when it was speculated that the Emmett Till case might be reopened to look at Carolyn Bryant’s role in Till’s death. He also admitted that Bryant and Milam had openly bragged about how they had tortured and killed Till. Young Emmet Till was kidnaped from his uncle’s house, forced into a truck and murdered on or about August 28, 1955. Three days later, his body, though tied to a heavy cotton-gin fan with barbed wire, surfaced. His corpse was so disfigured that Mose Wright, his cousin, could only identify him by an initialed ring. Authorities wanted to bury the body quickly, but Till’s mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, requested it be sent back to Chicago. After seeing the mutilated remains, she decided to have an open-casket funeral so that the entire world could see what racist murderers had done to

her only son. The Chicago Defender’s headline: “Nation Shocked, Vow Action in Lynching of Chicago Youth,” along with Jet, which published a photo of Till’s corpse, prompted the mainstream media to pick up on the story. Less than two weeks after Till’s body was buried, Milam and Bryant went on trial in a segregated courthouse in Sumner, Mississippi. There were few witnesses besides Wright who positively identified the defendants as Till’s killers. On September 23, the all-white, all-male jury deliberated for less than an hour before issuing a verdict of “not guilty,” explaining that they believed the state had failed to prove the identity of the body. Many people around the country were outraged by the decision and also by the state’s decision not to indict the two conspirators on the separate charge of kidnapping. Bryant and Milam subsequently detailed to a magazine journalist how they brutally murdered Till. Milam died in 1980 and Bryant in 1990. No one else was ever indicted or prosecuted for involvement with the kidnaping or murder. It is shocking that the federal government never pursued civil rights charges against any of the three parties involved. One has to question why the government seems so ineffective in terms of successes on civil rights cases, even in recent cases such as Trayvon Martin, Sean Bell, Ramarley Graham, Akai Gurley, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Walter Scott and so many more. If any good has come out of Till’s death, it is that the specter of the Klan and the extreme racism and brutality inherent in their existence were exposed to everyone around the country thus bringing to light the brutality of Jim Crow segregation in the South. This exposure served as an early impetus to the African American civil rights movement. Today’s list of young Black men being cut from the “umbilical cord” of their lives is equally disconcerting. The guilty may not publicly brag or boast, but their actions certainly attest to their comfort with killing Black men and getting away with it under the guise of the See Change , Page 4

It’s something that people have become accustomed to, yet with the emergence of technology—the ability to capture arrests or excessive force by police in action—has made it more difficult and yet we witnessed the law follow the ‘Blue code,’ justifying the inexcusable acts of those hired to serve and protect the communities, which they abuse and usurp extreme authority. For example in the case of Walter Scott, police officer Michael Slager claimed that Scott snatched his Taser from him and ran prompting him to fire 8 bullets the shooting at Scot’s back. He called in the report then planted the Taser on under the dead

body of Scott and reported that he had shot in self defense when in truth there was no weapon. Had there been no video of what actually transpired, Slager would have walked free. Just as Emmett Till’s murder evoked people to protest and helped to spur the civil rights movement onward with passion, the more recent deaths of sons and daughters have forced both young and older Americans into the streets to protest the “dis-justice.” The recent calls by legal authorities in the case of Walter Scott and that of Freddie Gray to charge the police officers show that progress is astir. Yes, the Walter Scott case became a game changer by charging police officer Mi-

chael Slager with murder. It may be a different state, but it’s still America, so when Marilyn J. Mosley, the 35year old state’s attorney for Baltimore city— who happens to be African-American—took a stand and filed charges against six police officers last Friday with a range of crimes, including murder and manslaughter in the arrest and fatal injury of Freddie Gray, it was in sync with the Walter Scott case. Mosby made her decision after receiving the medical examiner’s report established Gray’s death as a homicide. The growing evidence was too clear to ignore and led to her decision. While the police investigation is complete, Mosby’s office said

her office will conduct its own inquiry. “We are not relying solely on their findings but rather the facts that we have gathered and verified,” she said. There are those who oppose her decision, and her motives for bypassing a grand jury calling it hasty, but her swift decision brought a necessary and much- needed calm to a city that had taken to the streets showing the frustration, anger, distrust and rage they felt in violent flare-ups that resulted in Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake’s calling a State of Emergence and imposing a 10 p.m. curfew. The case has yet to be tried, so the country waits hopefully and is encouraged the change that is afoot.

Results like this have earned ComEd the U.S. EPA’s highest award for energy efficiency programs—the Energy Star Partner of the Year award—for four consecutive years.

Now ComEd is looking to do even more by advocating for energy-saving legislation in Illinois. ComEd’s Future Energy Plan—Illinois Senate Bill 1879—is a proposal that builds on the foundation of the “smart” grid. The plan supports energy efficiency and customer protections in two important ways: • Enables ComEd to invest more in energy efficiency programs to meet energy saving targets set by Illinois law. Under the Future Energy Plan, energy efficiency investment and associated energy savings will increase—while the average cost to a residential customer will decline over the next 10 years. • Provides for voltage optimization, an exciting, smart grid-enabled technology that allows ComEd to better control the amount of energy flowing on portions of the grid. Today . . . Yesterday Change comes only as the result of taking steps to change. It’s the action that causes change into actualization. So on May 5, 1905 Robert Sengstacke Abbott set out on a mission that would change the world. He founded the Chicago Defender, which once heralded itself as “The World’s Greatest Weekly.” The newspaper was the nation’s most influential Black weekly newspaper by the advent of World War I, with more than two thirds of its readership base located outside of Chicago. Later in 1930 Abbott wrote, “Before I started my life’s work —journal- Robert S. Abbott ism— I was counseled by my beloved father that a good newspaper was one of the best instruments of service and one of the best weapon ever to be used in defense of a race which was deprived of citizenship.” Today as we step into the footsteps of Robert Sengstake Abbott and John Sengstake, Cheryl Mainor, President and Publisher of the Chicago Defender is as clear as Abbott ever was that this is our legacy and continues to uphold the Chicago Defender’s Commandments. “We have the right to tell our own story,” she says, “And today we get the message out on the various platforms of this modern day. You can get our paper—the news, information and stories in our printed edition, on your computer, laptop, tablet and smartphone in real time.” As a paper published in the north, the Defender had more freedom to openly criticize issues unapologetically, and its editorial position was defiantly radical, attacking racial inequities head-on. Direct and on

point headlines, graphic images, and red ink were utilized to capture the reader’s attention and convey the horrid lynching, rape, assault, and other racist atrocities affecting Black Americans. The newspaper’s intense focus on these injustices implicitly laid the groundwork upon which Abbott would build his explicit critiques of society. This was in keeping with his father’s insight and Abbott’s vision and mission, which were crystal clear. This persuasive writing, “thereby made this journal probably the greatest stimulus that the migration had.” Sengstacke was a warrior, a defender of human rights and justice. He created a list of nine goals that constituted the Defender’s Commandments American race prejudice must be destroyed The opening up of all trade-unions to Blacks as well as whites. Representation in the President’s Cabinet Engineers, firemen, and conductors on all American railroads, and all jobs in government. Representation in all departments of the police forces over the entire United States Government schools open to all American citizens in preference to foreigners Motormen and conductors on surface, elevated and motor bus lines throughout America Federal legislation to abolish lynching. Full enfranchisement of all American citizens.[8] Though there is much that is significant about the Chicago Defender Commandments what stands out most is that he was inclusive rather than exclusive. We can see that many of the concerns were remained an issue, which spurred the Civil Rights Movement that came years later. He chose to speak in lofty terms of all people not in segregated terminology suggesting one race over another or one race compared to another. Robert Abbott was clear that we as a people are equal to and deserving of humane treatment. When referring to Blacks in the newspaper it was stylized to use The Race, never —Black, Negro or colored. How empowering is that? Again he chose a word that is all-inclusive rather than dividing or differentiating one from the other. Because he was so focused on the rights of all people pointing to the differences made in the American experience Robert Sengstacke Abbott played a major role in influencing the Great Migration of African Americans from the rural South to the urban North by means of strong, moralistic rhetoric in his editorials and political cartoons, the promotion of Chicago as a destination, and the ad-

The rhetoric and art exhibited in the Defender unmistakably demanded equality of the races and the promotion of a northern migration. He pointed the finger to the oppressive and total disregard for Black life resulting in the suppressed unhappiness in the south amongst our people through the exposés of southern crimes against Blacks. Articles were accompanied by attributing uninhibited responsibility on the mobs of whites typically involved, forcing readers to accept that these crimes were “systematic and unremitting.” He called upon The Race to make a choice that would make a difference in their quality of life. The paper was very informative and persuasive in helping millions of Blacks to leave the south. More importantly The Chicago Defender accepted and took the right to tell our story—our own story our way. Today the issues that concerned Blacks have not changed that much. We know now that laws do not change the hearts, minds and intentions of people. That even though laws have been passed by legislature the actual implementation has to come from and through the men and women to carry out. As we witnessed death after death of our youth at the hands of sentinels of the American government we have to ask ourselves what Americans are they serving and protecting? We have witnessed the men in blue assume their actions right after taking an innocent life by saying, “I feared for my life.” This is the Code Blue,” magic password seemingly awarding each a pass on their crimes. However the recent deaths of two Black men at the hand of white police officers offered some consolation, some hope. Both incidents have charged the involved officers with murder amongst a list of other charges. Both are

symbolic of change as a result of action. A white North Charleston, S.C., police officer Michael Slager, 33 was charged with shooting and killing an apparently unarmed Black man during a traffic stop after a video of the confrontation surfaced. He is facing a murder charge in connection with the shooting death of Walter Scott, 50. After viewing the video filmed by a bystander, capturing the end of a confrontation showing Slager doing other than what he reported as defending his life. “When you’re wrong, you’re wrong,” Mayor Summey, a white man said. “When you make a bad decision, don’t care if you’re behind the shield or a citizen on the street, you have to live with that decision.” This was the first of many similar cases that have prompted movements for change in how justice is perceived and can be considered a milestone setting the precedence for the Freddie Gray death at the hand of six officers in Baltimore, Maryland, which followed only. Still when States Attorney Marilyn Mosley announced charges against six police officers implicated in the death of 25-year-old Black Baltimore resident Freddie Gray white folks were shocked and immediately began their attempt to destroy her creditability and ability citing that she’s not experienced enough to navigate such a complicated case. It didn’t matter that there is a video and a medical examiner’s report ruling Gray’s death as a homicide. Both the Baltimore Police Union and the lawyers for the officers have made comments including, ‘Marilyn Mosley should recuse herself from the case due to a conflict of interest,’ claiming that, while running for election, Mosby spoke out about losing her 17-year-old cousin to gun violence. Therefore it’s a personal vendetta. However they fail to mention that Mosby’s mother, father, grandfather, and uncles were all police officers, and she’s a lawyer. Wouldn’t that make her intimately familiar with the workings of the police force and more likely to bestow them favoritism? However on the other side Mosby’s handling of the high-profile case — and the powerful statements she made at the press conference to announce it — has set the stage for her to become a political powerhouse. So to the people of Baltimore and the rest of America she is a bona fide bad sistah. From Marilyn Mosley’s mouth, “To the people of Baltimore and the demonstrators across America, I heard your call for ‘no justice, no peace,’” Mosby said during Friday’s press conference announcing the charges. “To the youth of this city: I will seek justice on your behalf.” Thank you Ms. States Attorney Marilyn Mosley, City of Baltimore.

Black teen unemployment comes with a price By Monroe Anderson This summer threatens to be long and hot. Not climate change hot but heated and angry, Baltimore Spring hot. Three days ago, a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll reported that 96 percent of us believe that there will be more racial disturbances as seen on TV. The 43rd president’s surplus-busting wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, which were never in his administration’s budget, sucked up much of the tax dollars that had been returning to the cities and states. Depending on who’s calculating, those two wars have cost America between four and six trillion dollars. American commanders handed out $3.5 billion with next-to-nothing oversight purportedly to rebuild the country we illegally invaded. Meanwhile, back at home, our pavements feel like something out of a war zone. Our outdated bridges are in danger of collapsing. Our transportation system is last millenium. And, of course, our urban areas are teeming with Black men who want and need jobs that they can’t get. In Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is making jobs available for 24,000 Chicago teens through his One Summer Chicago initiative. In the scheme of things, that’s not a big number. Maybe all those other, unemployed teens, will understand it’s the thought that counts. We’ll see soon enough. Summer is just around the corner.

The Planned Listening Tour of Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy By Robert T. Starks CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced last week the planned listening tour by Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy and his top district commanders to strengthen their relations with the community. According to the Sun-Times, the superintendent will talk to religious and community leaders around the city. The stated result of this venture is to inform the police on the ways in which they can better institute community policing.

Johnathan Jackson The immediate reaction to this announcement is the question, why only talk to religious and community leaders? Why not talk to residents and youth, especially those young Black men who are most likely to be the source of community complaints because of police abuse? It could be interpreted as the Mayor and McCarthy’s strategy to avoid hearing from the prey of the police misconduct that have often led to alleged police murder? With these questions in mind, the Chicago Defender went to the community to find out what questions community residents want to ask of the police and what changes in police policy would they demand. The need for a real, honest, face-to-face dialogue with a true representative sampling of the Black community rather than only one segment is essential to arriving at a true understanding of the total community and its needs for service and protection appeared to be the sentiment of the people interviewed. Chicago State University professor and Rainbow PUSH spokesman Johnathan Jackson said he is disgusted with the manner in which the CPD has treated Black people and especially Black men. He pointed to McCarthy’s statement concerning the police shooting of Rekia Boyd when the superintendent stated that he did not think Detective Dante Servin should have been criminally charged because policemen in similar circumstances should not hesitate to open fire when they feel their lives are in danger. Professor Jackson continued saying, “Superintendent McCarthy’s statement concerning the killing of Rekia Boyd is an insult to her family and to the Black community. Boyd’s family is determined to pursue this case as far as they can, including an investigation by the FBI and the United Nations Committee on Human

Rights. We join them in this quest for justice.” Black youth are especially upset and determined to see justice. William Calloway, leader of the Christianaire Youth Group, is demanding that “the Department of Justice launch an investigation into all of the police shootings of Blacks. We want McCarthy removed from office; we want the police practice of Stop and Frisk to stop immediately. We want Anita Alvarez gone and we want jobs, better schools and respect from the police. We plan to march on the FBI headquarters here in this city to demand that they conduct an investigation into these police shootings.” Youth Minister Darrius Randle concurred and stated that this city’s administration along with CPD has been silent on these serious issues. “The Baltimore City State’s Attorney has done more in one week than our State’s Attorney has done in eight years. We need the kind of action and response in Chicago that State’s Attorney Mosby has taken in Baltimore.” Given this overwhelmingly serious and thoughtful response to the planned listening tour, it is questionable what can be accomplished if the police intend to maintain their present position of obfuscation! While the police may be conducting a listening tour, the question is will they hear the complaints of the Black community and move to change their course of action? Will they move to eliminate the code of silence that is in the culture of the police department? This code of silence is a code of death for Black people. Policemen know who the bad policemen are and they know what they have done and not done, but they will not speak up out of a culture of fear and intimidation? Twenty-one year old Shannon Wilson, the leader of the Black Lives Matter Youth Campaign, was quite clear when she stated that she and most of her fellow young members have little or no faith in the police, nor do they have any faith in the willingness of the police to put the changes suggested by young people into effect after hearing those complaints. Perhaps the most profound statements in this set of interviews came from three veteran community activists. Jerome “J.J.” Jones said that he would ask McCarthy, “How can you support racist behavior on the part of policemen under your command and come to the Black community in good faith?” Civil rights fighter Zakiyyah Muhammad said, “If the police is (sic) serious about talking to the Black community, they need to stop the drug dealing in front of and around the 35th and Michigan headquarters!” Community activist Armel Peel brought the discussion back to the starting point when he asked, “Who will the police be listening to and what will they take back to be changed?” We can be sure that this planned listening tour will be well-covered by the press and the police will have some eager audiences among hand-picked clergy and self appointed community leaders; however, unless they listen to and answer the questions concerning police conduct by the entire community, it will be a waste of time. “Truly this so-called listening tour is four years too late; he (the superintendent) should have conducted it when he first came to this city. He is not from Chicago, he is from New York City. I am not sure that it will accomplish anything,” says Lewis Myers, civil rights attorney.

Winning is an American experience and football in America is a way of life. Every week fans invest time, energy and money to watch players and coaches develop strategy and execute plays to win games and achieve a Super Bowl victory, the most coveted prize of the sports calendar year. Chicago was ground zero for NFL Draft this year. The 2nd round was filled with as much energy and excitement as the first, attended by football fans from every walk of life; couples, families, men, women and children eagerly filed into the Auditorium Theater wearing their favorite team jerseys and hats. NFL teams still had an opportunity to find that game changer. Everyone loves the underdog; the players selected in the late rounds are hungry to prove themselves and work harder to contribute so their team can win. Players like Tom Brady, Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick were all late round picks who have brought more excitement to the game. When asked what he plans to do off the field and for the community, Smith talked about his autistic nephew and humbly said, “I really don’t know,” but his community service commitments will probably center on that. Homecoming Kentucky Pie 1 unbaked prepared 9-inch pie crust 1 cup pecan halves, reserve 1/4 cup for top garnish, coarsely chop 3/4 cup 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips 1/2 cup each: packed light brown sugar, flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons each: unsalted butter, melted and light corn syrup 2 tablespoons bourbon or 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1/2 salt 3 eggs, lightly beaten Heat the oven to 375 degrees; position an oven rack in middle row. Press pie crust into a 9-inch pie pan, twisting the edges to form a decorative rim. Prick the bottom and sides of the crust with the tines of a fork. Lightly press a sheet of aluminum foil lightly over the crust. Top the foil with pecan halves. Bake about 18 minutes. Lower oven heat to 350 degrees. Remove pie shell from oven; transfer shell to a wire rack. Gently remove foil and pecans. Set pecans aside 5 minutes to cool. Reserve 1/4 cup of pecans for decorating; use fingers to halve or quarter remaining nuts. Cover the cooled crust with www.chicagodefender.com

chopped pecans and chocolate chips. Set aside. Stir the sugar, flour, baking soda and salt together in a medium bowl; stir in the butter, 1/2 cup, plus 1 tablespoon of corn syrup (reserve 1 tablespoon), and bourbon or extract. Whisk in the eggs until well blended. Spread this mixture over the chips and nuts. Cover dough edges with crimped foil to prevent browning too quickly. Bake until filling sets, about 45 to 50 minutes. Remove from oven; transfer to wire rack. Gently press reserved pecans halves into the set filling, pressing down very slightly. (Don’t worry if they don’t adhere.) Dip pastry brush in reserved corn syrup; brush pecan halves lightly with syrup. Cool pie completely on rack. Makes one 9-inch pie.

We Day Illinois Empowers Local Youth

Held at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, IL, the youth- empowerment event brought out a diverse group of influencers—putting youth in the forefront of change by challenging them to take on social responsibility. As an initiative of Free the Children, We Day is a celebration that is tied to the organization’s We Act program that involves students in community and global causes across the United States and Canada. Free the Children co-founders and brothers Craig and Marc Kielburger created Free the Children in 1995. The first We Day event was held in 2007 and since its inception, the youth involved have raised over $37 million for upwards of 1,000 causes and have volunteered for more than 9.6 million hours. “The core idea is simple, “We believe that youth are not problems to be solved; we believe they are problem-solvers,” says Craig Kielburger. The strategy for We Day and We Act has proven to be an effective one. The students involved in the program show impressive growth—63 percent are more likely to finish high school and 20 percent are more likely to become role models for their peers.

“Truly these great transformative changes are a result of the program and the greatest change happens in the young people themselves—when young people are conscious of their power to make a positive influence,” adds Craig. For the first time, this fun-filled day was extended to Illinois and is supported by We Day national sponsor and Free the Children partner Allstate—a partnership which will help over 400,000 young people this year. Entertainers and co-hosts Jesse Giddings and Selena Gomez seamlessly guided the action-packed program, which included those in entertainment, social justice, philanthropy and more. Some of Chicago’s own favorite, award-winning stars were closely involved in the event’s execution. With hip-hop’s Common as co-chair of We Day Illinois and R&B’s Jennifer Hudson as national cochair, music, as well as the Chicago community, was well-represented. Thoughtful and highly entertaining performances were weaved throughout the event starting with an electrifying performance of “Try” by Colbie Caillat and Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds along with Ally Del Monte—a singer, songwriter and blogger—who is dedicated to being the voice of those who are bullied. Other amazing performers included country music group The Band Perry, a collaboration

The teens are creators of the I Am for Peace anti-violence movement and were each presented with a $10 thousand college scholarship. “Maurice and I felt beyond blessed to receive that award,” says Hutchins. “We didn’t come up with this movement to earn any monetary benefits—we just wanted to inspire lives and make a difference in our city.” Each young person who attended We Day Illinois earned his or her spot for commitment to both a local and global issue and Maurice Sanders of Christian Fenger High School is one such extraordinary teen. With a strong desire to make a difference in his community, Sanders is a member of the Mikva Challenge Peace and Leadership Council, an organization that involves youth in civic issues. “Right now, we are working with the police to build the youth-police relationship within our neighborhood,” says Sanders. “We’re planning an event where the police and the youth can meet and talk to each other—the youth can see that there’s a person behind the badge and the police can learn that the youth aren’t as dangerous as they may seem.” Aside from the festive environment, the young attendees of We Day were essentially inside what Craig Kielburger refers to as a “giant classroom” with words of wisdom infectiously being spread throughout the arena. “Good starts young, so remember that you can dream big,” encouraged Tom Wilson, chairman and CEO of The Allstate Corporation and co-chair of We Day Illinois. “When you combine your voices and rise up together, you’re more powerful than any CEO or politician.” Common also spoke on why even with adversity,

Chicago has its newest Bear. The crowd on hand at the Auditorium Theatre went wild as Commissioner Roger Goodell read, “With the number seven pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears select Kevin White, wide receiver, from the University of West Virginia.” White is fast; running the 40-yard dash in 4.35 seconds, he was the fastest wide receiver at this year’s NFL Rookie Combine, but his seemingly humble personality and “do whatever it takes” attitude about how he will attack his NFL playing career are what stole the show during his post-draft press conference. “I thought it was great. They were pretty excited. I was as well and I’m happy to be here,” White said of the ovation he received from the hometown crowd as his name was announced. Over the past three seasons, one thing that can surely be said about Bears’ fans is that they love their star wide receivers. With the trade of Brandon Marshall earli-
