Senate Ride Makes Detour Through Black Community By Maze Jackson Defender Political Editor The United States Senate is known as the most exclusive club in the world, so exclusive that only nine Black people have ever had membership since the United States was founded in 1776. Illinois has sent the most Black members, three, making it the number one producer of Black U.S. Senators in the world. In 1993, Carol Moseley-Braun, a product of the Harold Washington legacy, was elected as the first Black woman in the United States Senate, where she served until 1999. Then in 2005, Illinois sent rising star Barack Obama to become its junior Senator, who would later be propelled into the Presidency from the seat. Roland Burris was appointed by Gov. Rod Blagojevich to fulfill the remainder of President Obama’s term in 2009. The controversy surrounding Burris’ appointment allowed North Shore Congressman Mark Kirk to win the seat in 2010, a position that he currently holds. Sen. Kirk, also a veteran, suffered from a stroke in 2012 and many questioned whether he would return to the Senate, which he did in 2013. But Kirk has had some miscues lately, most notably his “bro with no hoe” comment that he was overheard saying to a colleague on a live microphone. Those miscues and the upcoming presidential election have made Kirk vulnerable. Duckworth The senior Senator from Illinois, Dick Durbin, is hoping to take advantage of that vulnerability by running Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth against Kirk. Duckworth, an Iraqi war veteran, helicopter pilot, wife, mother and double amputee will be a formidable candidate. She is the a media darling and walking campaign commercial that Durbin hoped to capitalize on in a high Democratic presidential turnout election that many anticipate will feature Hillary Clinton. A significant portion of the Democratic

turnout will come from the Black community, a fact that most Democrats, including Durbin take for granted. What Durbin did not consider, however, was the fact that Black leadership might want the seat back. This past July, Chicago Urban League President Andrea Zopp filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to run for U.S. Senate. Then just last week Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin announced an exploratory committee and listening tour in anticipation of his own Senate run. Andrea Zopp Andrea Zopp’s resume reads like someone you would expect to be in the U.S. Senate. The Harvard Law School graduate served in the United States Attorney’s Office and as the first Black and Woman 1st Assistant in the Cook County States Attorney’s Office. Additionally, Zopp has held adjunct professorships at Northwestern and the University of Chicago. She is also a wife and mother of three. All of those experiences are tools that Zopp feels she can use to make a meaningful impact in the Senate. But Zopp’s says her time as the President of the Chicago Urban League was her motivation to run for the U.S. Senate. On Why She’s Running When questioned on why she was running for Senate, Zopp was direct and straightforward, “We need a new type of leader, one with a track record of experience of working directly in our community on violence, criminal justice and education issues and getting results. Lack of that type of leadership hurts the African-American community directly.” On Daley Support Zopp does not deny that Bill Daley, co-chair of Zopp’s finance committee, encouraged her to run for the US Senate, but was clear that she had a broad based of support. On not prosecuting John Burge “If you recall Burge was eventually convicted of lying (perjury). We did not have the

same tools at our disposal that the federal government did, and the statute of limitations for what we could do had run out. Burge was in the mid to early ’80s, I was in the Cook County States Attorney’s Office in the ’90s.” On closing 50 CPS schools Though Zopp has also faced criticism for being on the Chicago Public School Board that closed over 50 schools in predominately Black communities, she still stands by that decision. “That is what leaders do. Leaders make tough decisions and expect to be held accountable for those decisions,” she said. “The University of Chicago released a study that said 90 percent of those students went to a better school. We are on the path that all kids have access to good schools, but there is more work to be done.” On the DSSC Snub When the powerful Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee announced that it had endorsed Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth for Senator in the Illinois Senate race, Zopp was not only taken aback but offended, and she spoke out. “The filing deadline was July 15 and I did not want to officially announce until I had filed, then the DSCC makes an endorsement on July 9? They had not made an endorsement in the race in thirty-five years, and then they make this snap endorsement,” she said. On What’s in a Senator Zopp for Black People “I am Black. I will be bringing that with me to Washington DC. I am also a mother of three, with a 19-year-old Black son. That fact is not lost on me. Illinoisans need a U.S. Senator with hands on experience, not just intellectual curiosity when tackling these tough issues.” Richard Boykin While Cook County Commissioner Richard See Senate race , Page 14

Medicaid Funding Saves Roseland Community Hospital… For Now

By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Reporter Roseland Community Hospital faced serious troubles with state budgets not passed by the State General Assembly and Governor Rauner sitting on allocated federal monies. A staple in the Roseland Community, Roseland Community Hospital is located in what was once considered one of the finer middle-class neighborhoods on the far south side of Chicago. Since the late 1960’s, the gradual change over from White families to Black families brought job opportunities from the steel mills and factories that graced the far South East Side. Over the last four decades, the community has witnessed a downhill battle of problems from business closings, gang infestation, foreclosure, unemployment and a spike in crime that has made Roseland a less desirable place to live. Once the pride of its residents, Roseland Community Hospital has gone through various changes and scrutiny as past administrators have been criticized for mismanagement and not providing

the highest quality of service to its patients. In the last two years, the hospital has undergone major administrative changes to improve the quality of service under the guidance of executive director Tim Egan and a new board of directors. It is called the ‘New’ Roseland Community Hospital to re-identify with residents that it is a hospital and medical center that can provide reliable aid to patients without traveling outside of their community. Unfortunately, the new facelift of the hospital is not enough to prevent it from the financial hiccups faced similar close calls. As of last week, the hospital was awarded their rightful Medicaid funding with the legal assistance from the Shriver Center and the Hospital Family Association. It has been a long battle, but the worn torn hospital was not going down without a fight. Now, payroll for over 200 hospital employees will be met this Friday along with vendor payments to keep the doors open at the medical facility. Many of the employees are members of the SEIU organization, the healthcare union

that protects the interests of workers throughout Illinois. With a new Republican governor that has not accepted an invitation to visit the hospital to take a tour nor to meet with community leaders many feel it’s a sign of disrespect for residents needing these services. Jaquie Algee, SEIU vice president and director of external relations, is also a long time resident of Roseland who has witnessed the various changes over the years. “You have a lot of people up until this day that have never recovered from those plants closing. In a former life, I ran the Human Resource department for U.S. Steel Works and I was responsible for hiring people. I also had to lay people off. I know a lot of people who came through that experience,” Algee said. “Some folks had worked at the mills for 15–30 years and this was all that they knew. If they could have gone to another factory or had alternate employment, it could have been an easier transition but it wasn’t there. As a result of this, the community started declining.” Now that Medicaid funds were allocated to the hospital, the hospital won’t be forced to close its doors and lay off employees. With all that has transpired in the community, this would be detrimental and a serious blow to residents who rely a great deal on medical needs for children and elderly patients. The next nearest hospital is Christ Hospital

about five miles away in Oak Lawn. “There’s a big difference in the 9th and 34th Wards, in terms of the kind of progress,” Algee said. “The work that Alderman Carrie Austin has done in comparison of what has been done in the 9th Ward. It almost looks like a war-zone. SEIU Healthcare has over 2,000 members that live in the 14th District. This covers the 9th, 21st and 34th Wards—all of them in the same district.” On a recent bus tour of the Roseland community, Congressman Robin Kelly rode along with hospital administrators, members of SEIU, community leaders and invited members of the press to discuss how state budget cuts have taken a toll on residents. Other public officials in attendance included Commissioner Deborah Sims, and representatives from both State Senator Emil Jones III and Alderman Carrie Austin offices. Each level of government has made a public commitment to communicate the importance of keeping the 84-year old hospital’s doors open. Cook County Board Commissioner Deborah Sims said, “We did a resolution at our last board meeting calling on Governor Rauner to give Roseland Community Hospital the money to make those Medicaid payments, because you can’t hold the hospital and the community hostage. The money should be given to the hospital, if you don’t give them the money – the doors will close. I’m quite sure the Governor doesn’t want this on his hands.” State budget cuts are hitting almost every social service and community program hard. And for the residents of Roseland—it’s real, and it’s serious. From childcare cuts affecting Community Assistance Programs, job training and youth services provided by Phalanx Family Services to keeping the peace among Roseland’s youth with Kids Off the Block and the area Cease Fire programs—state funding have been put on hold. It is a domino effect that has business, community, faith and political leaders stretched and running out of options. Next Wednesday, August 19th, SEIU members and supporters will be protesting Governor Rauner’s push to cease funding on social service programs at the State Fair on Governor’s Day. “You’re going to see residents from throughout the state in attendance and a rainbow of participants,” Algee said. “These cuts affect everyone, not just Chicago residents.” www.chicagodefender.com

Blue 1647 launches branch in St. Louis

By Robert T. Starks Defender Contributing Writer Mr. Emile Cambry, Jr., the founder of BLUE 1647, describes this organization as a “tech and entrepreneurship incubator, supporting all forms of entrepreneurship from events, filmmakers, artists, engineers, and designers.” Blue 1647, a center which trains people of all ages, is “where diverse people working for a better world can quickly access relationships and bring ideas to life.” Cambry, a young Black man who holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Chicago and a M.B.A. from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, is a professor at North Park College. He worked as an investment banker for J.P. Morgan Chase, and he is an accomplished filmmaker

whose films have been licensed by HBO and Cinemax and Showtime. He is a founding member and CEO of the Chicago Comedy Film Festival and the American Chamber Opera Company. He is founder and CEO of the Social entrepreneur projects, the 21st Century Youth Project and the Chicago Film Group. He is also a board member of the DePaul University Social Enterprise Collective. The Chicago Defender caught up with Cambry before he left for Blue 1647’s expansion in St. Louis. Mr. Cambry describe yourself. “I consider myself to be an innovator, someone who tries to view things through a different lens, with a focus on how to make thing better. I’ve had amazing opportunities to combine my previous experiences into something I love, which is cre-

ating more opportunities for more people.” Your father is a doctor practicing in a hospital on the west side of Chicago Why then did you choose business and technology rather healthcare? “In fact, I wanted to be a doctor like my dad until my senior year in college, but I realized it wasn’t my calling. I really wanted to do work for the community, but combine my experiences to work with others to innovate on top of the great work that’s already being done.” What led him to establish BLUE 1647 and why did you chose to locate it in Pilsen? “I chose Pilsen for a couple of reasons. For one, the proximity to the south and west sides of town. Additionally, the proximity of IIT, UIC, and Chicago Tech Academy was very attractive. I also wanted to bring diversity to Chicago communities. With Chicago being so segregated, I thought it was a unique opportunity, in our small way, to bring the Latino and African American communities together through technology. People shouldn’t have to walk far to experience innovation.” What offerings does BLUE 1647 have? “We’re an organization focused on three core areas: people/professional development, workforce development, and busi-

ZenPhone brings sleek design and funcitonality

By Elaine Elan Defender Contributing Writer Take a look at this cell phone. Mobility and connectivity are the first things that come to mind when we think about cell phones. Mobile communication is a vital necessity. So why should you take a look at this particular model and device? It’s almost like choosing a luxury model car that you don’t see in America. The ZenFone is a visually appealing cell phone. Its design is well engineered and functional. Similar to Android LG models it’s large and comfortable to hold. This phone is next level with ergonomic arc design and rear controls. Similar to the iPwww.chicagodefender.com

hone 6, it has superior camera technology for photos and videos. Consumer purchasing decisions for cell phones are driven more by the large carriers who activate monthly services rather than the manufacturers of the phones. Which of these carriers will receive our hard earned income once a month, will it be AT&T, Verizon, Sprint or T-Mobile? Once we determine who treats us like royalty then we select a smartphone from Android, iPhone, Black Berry or Windows. American consumers are in high demand, so why don’t we know more about Asus and the ZenFone? It’s a popular brand in China, Russia, India and Southeast Asia and Europe. The smart phone contains world class camera technology, an elegant design and performs better than most cell phones on the market. This smart phone also charges and connects faster than most. What are the realities for mobile

phone users? What’s more important to consumers – access to the web or the quality of photos and videos? I guess it really depends on the consumer? For me it’s simple, I need one place to store and access my contacts while I’m mobile. I want an option to call, email or text someone immediately. Many consumers don’t know a life without a smart phone loaded with mobile apps to fit the communications needs. We now have a choice and can use this innovative smart phone. Thanks to the SIM card, consumers can use this phone for domestic and international use. SIM (Subscriber Identity Mode) cards give consumers more options and flexibility. In fact, the ZenFone 2 is compatible with several mobile service providers including Straight Talk or MetroPCS. If you’re looking for a phone that’s fast, functional and affordable this is it. You’ll take your selfies to a new level and enjoy every experience with the ASUS Zen Fone 2.

We have all of the latest and greatest in technology. We have all of the latest tech that are more common in downtown Chicago, but we feel it’s absolutely necessary to expose our communities to that very same technology! We have six years olds coding, and students as old as 65 building websites. Our

workforce development students have received jobs in places as far as Silicon Valley and built businesses that have attracted funding from investors. But it also functions as a co-working space, kind of like a Starbucks, except that everyone in there is building something, whether it be a company, website, or invention. POWERED BY REAL TIMES MEDIA, INC.

E NOTES By Kai EL’Zabar

Defender Executive Editor There’s been a lot said about whether or not Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email account put national security information at risk. That’s the question that’s been raised most recently as new information has been reported and at times misreported. Mainstream media chooses to report that it is an impossible question to answer. They claim that their research shows the evidence isn’t clear-cut. I want to suggest that no matter the outcome the real question should be directed to national security. It seems that the matter of her email is the responsibility of the Federal government’s Executive Branch Cyber security. Listen, I know that you know that your company operates on a server designed specifically to protect its most coveted secrets and information. I know that I cannot utilize my personal email or any email off the company’s grid/ server as a company email because of that very reason. So in our exploration of who’s responsible for any possible breech of security ultimately it must go back to the Federal Government Executive Branch Cyber Security. Our question then should be addressed to them. Why would they allow her the usage of an email outside the jurisdiction of protected security? She should never have been permitted to use an email that was not issued to her based on her work or position as U.S. Secretary of State. I don’t care if she is a past First Lady. At the end of the day who dictates to whom the ‘email internet’ protocol? It doesn’t matter that we know that the idea that classified information would be in her emails runs contrary to Clinton’s own narrative. Since she first addressed her email habits in March, she’s said she didn’t interact with classified information that way. Rather, she viewed

sensitive information in hard copy in her office and through other secure methods while traveling. Though this controversy has been fuel for the House Benghazi Committee, whose members are interested in how Clinton’s email choices affected the 2012 terrorist attack on a diplomatic compound and its aftermath the truth is that it’s been driven by the Republican’s as a deflection from the lack of Republican candidates seeking the 2016 presidential nomination (actually it’s a deflection from the ill prepared GOP candidates). So as usual the Republicans have masterfully drawn attention on Hillary Clinton’s perceived vulnerability to draw doubt and point to seeming weaknesses. Already on more than one occasion, in fact on numerous occasions when asked if she would do anything differently, Hillary Clinton has stood her ground, stating, —At the time, given the information she had, she’d make the same choice.’ This has not faired well with the media and in turn with some of the public. But isn’t that what all of us do? We work with what we have and that’s what we derive our choices from. Granted most of our choices don’t involve the potential life or death of others yet the principle is the same. We can’t ignore that. Yes four American servicemen died at Benghazi but it goes with the territory. Let’s examine the new evidence and what it reveals about Clinton’s tenure as secretary of state. The new evidence is intergovernmental memos from two government guard dog agencies: the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community (IGIC) and the State Department’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG), are both independent of their respective agencies. Each were asked by The Benghazi committee to review the email practices of former secretaries of state. The reviews examined the State Department’s process for publication of 55,000 pages of Clinton’s emails, which she provided to the department fall 2014. There are two memos, one is an update to Congress about the investigation, and the other is a dialog between the State Department and the two inspectors general. The memos seem to say point-blank that Clinton’s email trove contains information that was classified at the time it was sent. Seem is the operative word here. On July 24, The New York Times reported that the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community had sent a security referral to members

6 August 12-18, 2015 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

of the executive branch and the memos started to circulate. The security referral is essentially a notification that classified information might exist in a location outside of the government’s possession (in this case, Clinton’s private email server). You need to understand that the New York Times originally incorrectly said the inspectors general requested a criminal investigation into Clinton’s email use -- as opposed to a security referral -- but the newspaper later issued two corrections. The referral is in connection with Clinton’s account, not whether Clinton herself mishandled information, and did not alledge criminal activity. That’s the point. Clinton should have been issued a proper email account on the White House secure server. The Inspector General of the Intelligence Community reviewed a 40-email sample of the 55,000 pages and found that four out of the 40 contained classified information that “should never have been transmitted via an unclassified personal system.” These four emails have not been released to the public. Note, none of these emails were marked “classified.” Without a label, it’s nearly impossible to prove whether Clinton or someone who emailed her passed along classified information, whether willfully or negligently. We don’t know if the sender knew the information was classified, where they got their information from, or who declared the information classified in the first place. Does this mean Clinton was wrong to say there was no classified material in her email? Not necessarily. As confusing as it may seem, these two assertions -Clinton’s claim that she did not have any classified information in her email and the inspector general’s claim that she did -- could both be partially accurate. This is primarily because the State Department disputes whether the information was classified. Agencies regularly disagree about whether information should be classified, often arguing over lines within the same document, said Thomas Blanton, director of the National Security Archive. If the intelligence community declares something classified from its perspective, that does not automatically trump the State Department’s own decision that the same piece of information is not classified. This perhaps has to do with the individual department’s interest and focus. However as the secretary, Clinton had ultimate authority to declare

Col. (Ret.) Eugene F. Scott (Publisher) 2000 – 2003 David M. Milliner (Publisher) 2003 – 2004 Michael A. House (Publisher) 2008 – 2013

President/Publisher: Cheryl Mainor the email unclassified -- which she could do by simply leaving it without a label -- because the information originated in the State Department, despite the fact that it also originated in the intelligence community. However, if information came solely from the CIA, and it ended up in Clinton’s email without the proper classification marking, that could be problematic, said Steven Aftergood, director of the Project on Government Secrecy at the Federation of American Scientists. Ultimately, both Blanton and Aftergood said the memos tell us much more about the turf war between State and the intelligence community than they do about how Clinton handled her emails. Ummm. Aftergood makes good points, What does it say about Secretary Clinton? It doesn’t say anything about deliberate or negligent mishandling of classified information.” Blanton said, “The intelligence community is trying to override State Department determination. ... It doesn’t say anything about Mrs. Clinton’s own activities.” Still there’s cause for concern from an information security perspective about Clinton’s decision to exclusively use a private email server, Aftergood noted. Yet again my question is how is that she gets to determine that? Even if it isn’t officially classified, information sent to

the secretary of state is, by its nature, sensitive and should have been flagged again by security. That’s their responsibility. What’s been discussed are emails that contained information that was considered classified at the time the emails were sent. The edited emails that the State Department has released so far are because the department later decided the information was classified — meaning no one mishandled this information by sending it initially without a classification label. Classification upgrades like this occasionally happens if new information comes introduced to the thread that affects the sensitivity of the information. Additionally, some information is exempted from Freedom of Information Act releases for other reasons -- such as privileged communications between government officials. Word is the Benghazi Committee is expected to grill Clinton about her email use in an October hearing. But as of this moment, Blanton sums it up, “It’s not proof.” Benghazi should be behind us— and we should be assessing Donald Trump. If you think he’s rogue now imagine him as President. We’ll have more than emails off the grid to concern ourselves with.

The Heart and Culture of the West Side: West Side Music Festival

R&B singer Case performs at the West Side Music Festival. Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer The West Side of Chicago is one of the toughest sides of town. People who talk about the West Side usually refer to an urban legend of black activism, strong-arm politics or the heightened levels of crimes. No matter how you measure the various characteristics of the West Side, most Chicagoans understand if you grew up on that side of town—you’re not a punk. The West Side has created some wonderful community leaders and long standing businesses that pride themselves on staying loyal to their community. A new pride and joy has taken refuge on this side of town—the West Side Music Festival. The brainchild of Michelle Geddes and Michael Scott, Jr., newly elected as the Alderman of the 24th Ward. Both are West Side natives and happily reside in the Lawndale community where they decided to create and produce a music festival four years ago—free to the public. Since it’s inception, the free music festival has brought

out a growing number of attendees enjoying past concert performances by Syleena Johnson, Raheem DeVaughn, Terisa Griffin, Brownstone, Musiq Soulchild and 112. This year, the festival had the biggest R&B headliners to date—Case and Bell Biv DeVoe (BBD). It has become a labor of love and taking on a different role this year, said Ald. Scott, Jr., who is incorporating his newly formed, “Back to School” picnic and family day into this year’s West Side Music Festival. “I’m proud to say that in the three years that the West Side Music Festival has existed, we’ve had no incidents of violence,” Scott said. “It’s just been good people out enjoying good music in great weather and we look to have the same thing happen this year.” In addition to having the Alderman’s endorsement on the event, another Scott will be stepping into a new role as the Executive Director of the West Side Cultural Foundation—his wife, Natashee Scott. An attorney with an Roosevelt University MBA and a background in corporate transactional law, Natashee Scott is the mother of three children—a ten-year-old, four-year-old and a 10-month-old son. Taking on this new role for the West Side Cultural Foundation is exciting as she winds down from working on her husband’s aldermanic election. “I’ve been a spectator in watching Michael and Michelle run around going crazy producing the music festival,” Natashee said. “I am very excited and I’ve learned so much in just this short length of time.” In addition to this year’s musical line-up, which includes local acts, Obisoulstar, Dante Hall, BluPrint, and Hadiya Love, there will be various games and

Dr. Margaret Burroughs’ Legacy Continues

Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer After a 4-year process to name the 31st Street Beach Harbor refor Chicago visual artist and the Co-Founder of the DuSable Museum of African American History, Dr. Margaret Burroughs—the beach will be named after her. There was a special ceremony Aug. 11 in her honor renaming 31st Street Beach after one of Chicago’s African American warriors for the arts. Congressman Bobby L. Rush (1st District-IL) led a committee of leaders from all walks of life who have been influenced by Dr. Burroughs and her continued push for cultural preservation of African Americans throughout her life. She helped to established the South South Community Arts Center which still stands today at 3831South Michigan Ave. www.chicagodefender.com

After her family migrated from St. Rose, Louisiana when she was five years old, her love for the arts blossomed. A graduate of Englewood High School where she attended with classmate and famed poet, Gwendolyn Brooks, she went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree and her Masters of Arts in art education at the Art Institute of Chicago. Today, on Wednesday, August 12 the Chicago Park District board will take the official vote at the regular scheduled board meeting at 3:30pm. Supporters are encouraged to attend the ceremonial vote. It’s befitting that such a great honor would be bestowed by an extraordinary woman, who served as a Commissioner of the Chicago Park District 1985 through 2010. Why the long process of consideration for a beacon in the African American community? In a time, where the proper paperwork could recognize a person for a neighborhood corner to have their name blazoned under a street light while still breathing life. It was required to have 10,000 signatures to petition the Chicago Park District to name both the 31st Street Beach and Harbor after Dr. Burroughs. The same location where the infamous Chicago Race Riot of 1919

jumped off after a young Black youth drifted off into the White reserved area of the beach. Mobbed by a group of volatile white teens, they stoned the young boy to death which provoked the worst race riots in Chicago history. In the end, 23 Blacks and 15 whites were fatal victims to the massacre. Among some of the gangs involved in the feud between Blacks and whites were the Hamburgs, a white Irish gang based in Bridgeport in which the late Mayor of Chicago Richard J. Daley was an active member as a teenager. Nearly, 104 years later we come back to this area to pay tribute to an African American woman whose hard work and sacrifice for her community earned her this honor. We are pleased that the Chicago Park District has conceded but unfortunately, the harbor will be saved for another corporate company to keep naming rights. Chicagoans are used to the politics game and ‘number jacking’ so this will not take away from the fact that when we refer to any piece of land associated with the 31st Street Beach and Harbor it will be proudly referred by us as the Dr. Margaret Burroughs Beach. Let the choir say ‘Amen’.

activities for young and senior attendees. During the day from noon–6pm Alderman Scott will be giving away hundreds of backpacks for students heading back to school along with free hotdogs and chips. From 5pm–9:30pm, the live entertainment takes the stage and he hopes parents will stay to enjoy live entertainment under the sky. The importance of the West Side Music Festival is a catalyst for other positive programs to come from the West Side Cultural Foundation. Natashee Scott adds, “I want to focus more on having programming throughout the year, as opposed to having one big event. That’s our goal for 2016, to create other educational and cultural outlets. My focus will be for the youth because of everything that is taking place on the streets,” she said. “In the words of my husband, ‘We can’t ask them to put the guns down if we don’t have anything else for them to pick up.’ So I want to focus on giving them something else—another outlet other than hanging on the corner.” THE CHICAGO DEPARTMENT OF AVIATION PRESENTS

College Freshman: relax to adjust to college life Tajah Ware

Chicago Defender Intern How hard will the classes be? Will the workload be too much? Will I adjust well to a new environment? Will I make friends? Am I smart enough? These are just a few of the thoughts that go through high schoolers’ minds before they transition into college. Transitioning is defined as the process or period of changing from one state or condition to another. As we teenyboppers transition from high school to college we are overwhelmed with worries. However, it’s very important for students going into their first year of college to remember to relax. Yes, transitioning into college from high school can be worrisome but anxiety has never helped anyone. The first thing incoming college freshman should do is relax. Secondly, they should talk to their advisor about the difficulty level of the classes they chose to take prior to the first day of class. Incoming college freshman should also be aware that the workload will be heavier than the one they had in high school; however they will have more time to complete the work given to them as college freshman.

When it comes to adjusting to a new environment you have to be ready to miss home. While in college you will probably at some point in time feel homesick, especially if you are going to school in a different state, and that’s ok. However it’s crucial to not let your aching for home hin-

der how you adapt to your new school. Don’t be so homesick that you reject your new home. The same rules apply to making new friends. It is also natural to miss your friends as you all part ways, but don’t let this stop you from forming connections with new

people. During the first semester as college freshman it’s very important that students step out of their shell. Join clubs. Go out of your way to meet someone new everyday. Try to initiate a conversation with their lab partner or roommate. It is very easy to make friends your freshman

year, because everyone is in the same boat—everyone needs and or wants to make new friends. As you encounter new people, it may seem as if you can’t stop comparing yourself to them. You may think, “Wow, they always get A’s on their paper and I always get B’s they must be smarter than me” or “ The teacher always smiles at them they must be more likeable than me.” Comparing yourself to others will never make you feel better about yourself and neither will doubting your intelligence. In college you’ll be exposed to things and material you’ve never been exposed to before. It’s important that you give yourself enough time to adjust whether than doubting your level of intelligence right off the bat. You got into to college so clearly you possess some form of intelligence. Never doubt your ability to compete intelligence wise with someone else or else you’ve already lost. Transitioning into your first year of college is nerve racking— and it should be. You are making a major life decision, which is exciting. Remember that is very common to be nervous and to have worries before going into your first year of college. Just breathe it will all work out.

Win A New 2015 Chrysler 200 At The 18Th Annual Chicago Football Classic - Be There Sept. 26 By A. L. Smith , Correspondent Defender Contributing Writer

(CHICAGO) - - - There’s an old adage that says ‘You can win more in life if you just take a chance’! According to Chicago Football Classic co-founder and business executive Larry Huggins, it’s the guiding force that’s inspired him throughout his entire life. “I’ve always been willing to roll the dice, so to speak—in order to take a chance to my aspirations, ideas and dreams, and turn them into reality,” laughs Huggins, whose successful construction industry track-record tells the story. He along with businessmen and philanthropic brothers Everett Rand and Tim Rand took a chance nearly two decades ago, when they first

established the Chicago Football Classic to provide scholarships for worthy students hoping to attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Always Be Willing to Take A Chance in Life. That’s also the motto and philosophy behind the highly successful and ever-popular 2015 Chicago Football Classic. This year’s HBCU college football event is on Sept. 26 with kick-off at 3:30 p.m. at Soldier Field. And if YOU are at the game and are 18 and older - YOU could also take a chance on the post-game scholarship raffle to win the sleek and shiny 2015 Chrysler 200, the ultimate “sporty, yet luxurious mid-sized sedan” and the new official car of the Chicago Football Classic. Get your tickets to the Classic tickets now!! They are reasonably priced at $17-$45. Call Midway Wholesalers @773.874.8000 ext. 4024 or Riteway-Huggins Construction @773.734.1600. They are also available through Ticketmaster, go online to www.Ticketmaster. com or www.chicagofootballclassic.biz. “If you love football, enjoy shiny, sharp new cars and support the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), you’ll definitely want to attend this exciting game on September 26. This 18th Annual matchup features the defending HBCU Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Champions, Morgan State University and Washington, D.C.-based collegiate sports powerhouse, Howard University,” says Everett Rand, a well-known and highly respected business leader and philanthropic co-founder of the classic. Just ask last year’s 2014 scholarship raffle winner, a former long-time educator Carolyn Scott Blackledge. She remembers being happily stunned when her first-ever visit to the Classic resulted in one of the biggest wins of her life. “To this very day, it is still unbelievable that last year, in 2014—came to Chicago, and attended my first-ever Chicago Football Classic. It was a fabulous event. My friends and I really enjoyed ourselves! Then on top of it all—I ended up walking off the football field after winning the very sports car my son had been dreaming of, well, since he could read!” Blackledge smiled the still enthused, California resident, as she remembered drawing the lucky raffle ticket in excited anticipation turned amazement. The retired educator who hails from Ventura, California spent her entire professional career promoting learning, personal excellence, and higher education among urban youth on the west coast. Now approaching twenty years of providing over $3.5 million in philanthropy and HBCU college scholarship assistance to thousands of Chicago-area students, the Classic is justifiably proud of its growth and development over the years. That’s an important point on which Classic co-founders Larry Huggins, Tim Rand and Everett Rand all agree and further emphasize: That’s why this year, they’ve decided to ‘advance their game’ and present a new official car for the 18th Annual Chicago Football Classic Scholarship Raffle – the Chrysler 200! “I encourage everyone interested in HBCU college football—current and former students, alumni and supporters, families, friends and neighbors—to BUY TICKETS and ATTEND the 2015 Chicago Football Classic. It’s a worthy cause, and for all adult attendees 18 and over - - all it takes is a single $5 raffle ticket to possibly win a 2015 Chrysler 200 Sedan. It is truly worth a chance!” Blackledge said. She is also a warm, exuberantly caring woman, wife and mother who hails from a long line of proud grad-

uates from the nations Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). A former educational resource specialist in California, an avid traveler, book lover and risk-taker, she heard about the Chicago Football Classic last year from her Delta Sigma Theta sorority sisters all the way on the west coast, and decided on a whim to come and experience this time-honored event for herself. Interestingly, she ended up traveling solo to Chicago for the Classic, after unexpected business and family demands prevented her husband, son and other relatives from attending at the last minute. “I felt that it was my duty to come out to this great education-focused, HBCU college sports event to support and empower young people seeking to advance their goals for higher education. These are our future business, educational and community leaders, and we must do everything we can to help them succeed,” emphasized Mrs. Blackledge. When she first heard the numbers called out as the winners, she looked closely at the ticket in the palm of her hand. She stared at the prized 2014 Dodge Challenger, and then back down into her now tightly clenched fist. It was true. Her excitement turned to stunned disbelief: She had actually won the brand new sports car, raffled off at last year’s 17th Annual Chicago Football Classic in Soldier Field. “I shook my head and screamed, then started running for the field as nearby spectators cheered and cameras flashed around me,” she said. “All I could think about was how happy my husband and college-age son would be when they found out!” Mrs. Blackledge echoes the fervent beliefs of the Classic co-founders: She is also very clear about the importance, and future of the Chicago Football Classic. “I urge everyone interested in the future of young people and higher education to buy tickets and attend the Chicago Football Classic! We must all do our part to buy tickets and attend this great event, to keep the Classic going strong for many years to come. Today more than ever, with rampant violence in many urban neighborhood streets of broken dreams, and the high cost of college, the Chicago Football Classic inspires hope, expands future options, and promotes educational excellence and opportunity for young people. Together, working with Classic supporters and sponsors, HBCU alumni and other committed partners—we can move many, many more deserving young people in the community towards brighter futures.” In the final analysis, Classic co-founder Tim Rand, summarily describes the ultimate goal of this annual college-themed football event. “Over the last 18 years, the 2015 Chicago Football Classic has had as its primary mission—promoting the long-term success of African-American youth, to achieve academic, personal and professionally-oriented excellence, while attending HBCUs and throughout their lives.” To support the student scholarships and work of the Chicago Football Classic—and take a chance to win a dream car, get your tickets today. Black America Cooks By Donna Pierce Defender Contributing Writer My sister smiled during the long pause in our conversation, waiting for me to answer her query about my favorite fruit. “Watermelon,” I answered loudly, fully aware of the reason for her grin. Growing up in a small college town during the Civil Rights movement, so many in-your-face advertising examples of black inferiority were pinned to the notion of our entire race’s wild passion for watermelon that we weren’t allowed to even notice them in public. The big, green melons with luscious red flesh was never discussed, eaten or even noticed outside the privacy of our father’s garden and our mother’s kitchen. Today—especially during peak-season August—I’m doing my best to make up for lost time. Feel free to follow this recipe with on a grill for one of my favorite summer good-for-you dishes, balancing the zesty flavor of spicy shrimp with cool and refreshing “say it loud” watermelon. Senate Race from Page 2 Boykin has not officially entered the U.S. Senate race, he did recently announce the formation of an exploratory committee. The Jackson, Mississippi-born and Englewood-raised attorney made a name for himself as Congressman Danny Davis’s Chief of Staff. A graduate of Central State University and University of Dayton Law School, Boykin was elected to the Cook County Board in 2014 in spite of the fact that he did not get the support of the Democratic Party bosses, a fact that Boykin clearly relishes. In addition to serving on the Cook County Board, Commissioner Boykin is an attorney in Washington D.C. and Chicago at the law firm of Barnes & Thornburg LLC. On why he is considering running Boykin made it clear he has not declared yet, but rather, formed an exploratory committee, and will go on a statewide listening tour to hear what people think. “Two candidates declared and never asked the people what they think the issues are. Political bosses put both candidates in the race. If I get in, I will be the people’s candidate—not the bosses’. ” On Kirk and Splitting the Black Vote Boykin scoffs at any suggestion that he could be entering the race as an attempt to split the Black vote for Kirk, who Boykin supported in 2010, “when www.chicagodefender.com

Summer Shrimp 1 pound medium to large uncooked Gulf shrimp, thawed if frozen, peeled, deveined, tails removed, see note Olive oil 1 tablespoon sweet paprika 1 teaspoon celery salt 1 teaspoon ground cumin 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder 3/4 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1/2 teaspoon tried oregano 1/2 teaspoon ground red pepper, or to taste

Transfer to a foil lined large baking pan (or two) that has been sprayed with oil.

1/8 teaspoon ground allspice 1/8 teaspoon ground mace

Cook, turning once with tongs, until shrimp sizzle and shrink a bit, take on a pink to reddish hue and are no longer translucent, about six to eight minutes.

Freshly ground black pepper 1/2 small seedless watermelon, cut into wedges Fresh thyme stems for serving, optional Heat the oven to 425 degrees. Rinse fresh shrimp; drain the frozen shrimp, but do not pat either fresh or frozen shrimp dry. (Moisture on the shrimp will help the seasoning adhere without oil.) Butterfly the shrimp by lightly cutting through the curve of the shrimp with a sharp knife to separate the shrimp body into two connected halves that resemble a butterfly. Set aside.

the Democrats presented a flawed candidate.” “Absolutely not! It’s offensive to me and the multi-ethnic constituents of my District. I may be a Black candidate, but I want to compete for every single vote. Not just Black votes,” Boykin said pointedly.

Stir together the paprika, celery salt, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, oregano, red pepper, allspice, mace and black pepper in a small bowl; Add this mixture to the moist shrimp, tossing with your hands to coat the shrimp with seasoning.

Let cool in pan one minute. Remove with tongs. Serve over watermelon wages. If desired, add plain Greek yogurt seasoned to taste with a Thai chili paste such as Sambal Oelek. Makes four servings. Note: to quickly thaw frozen shrimp, place in a medium bowl; cover with cold water. Or place in a colander under running water. Shrimp will thaw in five to 10 minutes.

Precursor to Congressional Run? Many have speculated that a Boykin Senate run is the precursor to a future run for Congressman Danny Davis’ seat. “Outrageous, preposterous, Democratic party shenanigans, and speculating!” laughed Boykin. “Stay tuned…I am in the race for the people. Congressman Davis is running, and I am supporting him.” What’s in Senator Boykin for Black People? When questioned on how his candidacy would benefit the Black community, Boykin answered, “You will get a results-oriented Senator you can touch, not one who will not just come to a parade. I will represent communities that have been left out for too long.” Zopp and Boykin both have the ability to change the landscape of the U.S. Senate race. With rumors that State Senator Napoleon Harris may also be entering the race as well, Tammy Duckworth’s the path to the U.S. Senate just took a detour through the Black community.
