Bronzeville: Boom or Bust? By Maze Jackson Defender Political Editor
Bronzeville is the neighborhood roughly bordered by the Dan Ryan Expressway on the east, Cottage Grove on the west, 26th Street on the north, and 51st Street on the south. In the early 20th century, Bronzeville was also known as the Black Metropolis, the destination of many Blacks who sought to escape the South during the Great Migration. The neighborhood thrived as Chicago’s Black epicenter because of racial segregation and the Black population explosion that accompanied the Great Migration. That need for goods and services created a local Black economy which was basically self-reliant. The Black Metropolis relied on the interconnectedness of the business, political, and service communities. The businessmen in Bronzeville worked to elect politicians that allowed their businesses to thrive. Conversely, those businessmen were also local philanthropists who gave back to the community, created local institutions and provided assistance. Bronzeville was once the home of The Regal Theatre, The Parkway Ballroom, The Sunset Café and the Dreamland Café, where any number of famous Black entertainers would perform. Bronzeville was also home for some of Black America’s most storied figures, including: Gwendolyn Brooks, Sam Cooke, and Lou Rawls. Even famed trumpeter Louis
Armstrong spent some time perfecting his craft in Bronzeville. From the 1940’s through the 1960’s, significant concentrations of public housing projects were built in the Bronzeville community. The Robert Taylor Homes, Stateway Gardens, and Dearborn Homes, combined with the Harold Ickes Homes and the Hillard Homes formed the infamous Chicago Housing Authority State Street Corridor. The State Street Corridor was the largest, continuous stretch of public housing projects in the country. Some would also argue that the State Street corridor was constructed by then Mayor Richard J. Daley as a natural racial barrier, along with the Dan Ryan, to keep Blacks contained east of the expressway. Whether intentional or not, the result was one of the largest concentrations of crime and poverty the country had ever seen. As a result, what was once the Black Metropolis became a black hole of poverty and despair, with immigrant groups taking control of the retail business that was once controlled by Black businessmen. The insurance agencies, banks, and theaters were replaced with liquor stores, nail shops and fried chicken joints. The Bronzeville that was once the center of Black life in Chicago had become the place Black people sought to avoid. Bronzeville has essentially become “The Low End.” Though Bronzeville boasts a rich history of uplifting and supporting the Black community, the long term deterioration of the once thriving
neighborhood, has left land and capital up for grabs. Now the question is, will Bronzeville be able to return to its former glory without pushing out the people who helped to build it. Bronzeville was contained wholly in the third ward, and the most prominent figure in the Third Ward was Black activist and civil rights leader turned politician, Alderman Dorothy Wright Tillman, affectionately known as “The Hat.” Appointed in 1985 as part of the Harold Washington movement, Tillman was known as an unabashed champion for Black people, poor Black people in particular. Because Tillman’s ward contained the highest concentration of poor Blacks, it only made sense that she advocated for poor Blacks; but Tillman was also a historian, and the history of Bronzeville as the Black Metropolis was not lost on her. So she began implementing a 70/30 plan, which meant that 70 percent of the business and jobs in the community would go to Black people. But to Tillman, ownership was the key. “I wanted our people to be able to stay in our community. I did not want them to leave because they had to, but because they wanted to,” Tillman said. “We were redeveloping Bronzeville, really Grand Boulevard, with Black people benefitting. We wanted to build our community off of our strengths, which were the arts,” she continued. “If you go to Chinatown they sell you on the rice; I wanted people to come to Grand Boulevard and be able to hear our music and see our culture. I wanted to mark our community.” But Tillman was not able to com-
plete her plan because Pat Dowell defeated her during bitterly fought election in 2007. Dowell, who touted her credentials as an urban planner during the campaign, was faced with the unenviable task of picking up the redevelopment of Bronzeville after Tillman. Dowell was able to capitalize on the changing demographics of the Third Ward to oust Tillman, whose actions were seemingly misinterpreted.” “People like to say ‘Dorothy Tillman took all the land’ but I really put it on hold, so when those White people would come, they would have to [talk] to me about Black ownership. At that time Black politicians controlled 90 percent of the available land in the city. I wanted that land so you could come home,” Tillman emphasized. As the CHA implemented its “Plan for Transformation” large blocks of Tillman’s most loyal supporters in the housing projects were jettisoned to far off suburbs via Section 8. In their place, equally tall South Loop skyscrapers were built, but they were filled with more wealthy tenants who had different priorities, who some Bronzeville residents think Dowell caters to, a claim she denies. “I prioritize all the communities in my ward, but Continued on page 12

Camelot Charter School opens in Austin

Interim Managing/Web Editor
In the midst of the Chicago Public School budget issues, yet another charter school is opening on the city’s west side. CPS and Camelot Education are launching another “Safe School,” this time on the West Side. Camelot Academy Garfield Park will serve up to 150 middle school and high school students at the former Mar-
coni Elementary in West Garfield Park. “This is a collaboration with the community,” said Camelot VP of Operations in Chicago Pedro Segarra. “In addition to our school the Park District will also have a recreational program and there will be a day care center in the building.” Students can spend up to a year at a Safe School like Camelot Academy Garfield Park. After that period Camelot transitions kids

who got tired of constantly being bullied,” Camelot VP of Operations in Chicago Pedro Segarra. Brenda Williams, who served as principal at Camelot’s Chicago Excel Academy of Englewood, is moving to become executive director at Garfield Park. It’s not the only school to arrive in the area. Moving Everest Charter School was also approved by the Chicago Board of Education in December to open in Austin. The school will serve 810 kindergarten through 8th grade students and offer optional after-school programs for families including additional tutoring, counseling and support services. The school is set to open fall 2015 for kindergarten and 1st graders and will occupy new facilities currently under construction at 416 N. Laramie Ave., according to Moving Everest Charter School’s website. Thirty schools in the Austin and Garfield Park area will see their budgets cut while 13 will see them rise, according to DNAinfo Chicago. CPS announced that neighborhood schools will bear the brunt of nearly $60 million in cuts, while charter schools and other charter programs for at-risk students would see a combined $30 million in gains. “Money follows the students,” Ostro told DNAinfo, adding that projected CPS enrollment for the coming school year is 372,275, down about 1 percent from last year.

Julian Bond Served Our Community
By Kai EL’Zabar
Defender Executive Editor
Some people have a choice but Julian Bond always knew who he was and what his responsibility was to his community. He was born the son of Horace Mann Bond, an historian, college administrator and social science researcher who taught through example while making his own contributions to Black Freedom struggle of the 1950’s through the 1960s. A Nashville native as would be his children, he was born to parents who were former slaves, both of whom graduated from Oberlin College in Ohio and valued education. Horace’s father trained as a pastor and accepted posts at Congregationalist churches across the south. They were easily among the Black elite and encouraged their children to pursue success through academic achievement. It was never a question of whether or not he’d go to college so when Julian Bond enrolled at Morehouse in 1961 it was as it should be. And when he became one of the original Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee/ SNCC in Atlanta from 1961 as communications director, it was of no surprise to his family or those who knew him. He also married in 1961, began a family and left Morehouse for the sole purpose of working on civil rights in the South. From 1961 to 1963, he led student protests against segregation in public facilities and the Jim Crow laws of Georgia. Julian Bond held his position with SNCC for five years and skillfully guided the national news media toward stories of violence and discrimination as the committee challenged legal segregation in the South’s public facilities during a time when mainstream media ignored what was happening to Blacks. He helped organize civil rights and voter registration drives until to September 1966. Over time he shifted his stance to lean more towards the leadership of the N.A.A.C.P. where he found a foundation of peace that would guide him throughout the rest of his life. The ideology of a peaceful resistance resonated with him after experiencing the horrific crimes against Blacks by whites during his tenure at SNCC. This led to his close affiliation with Dr. ML King upfront and center. In 1965, Mr. Bond was one of eleven African Americans elected to the Georgia House of Representatives after the passage of the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act of 1965 had opened voter registration to Blacks. By ending the disfranchisement of Blacks through discriminatory voter registration, Blacks regained the ability to vote and entered the political process. Mr. Bond ultimately ran and was elected as a Democrat, the party of President Lyndon B. Johnson, who had signed the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act into law. However it was noted by Civil Rights leaders how Johnson had hesitated and did not sign the Civil Rights Act until he was forced. Every experience he had leading up to that culminating moment that revealed to the world who he was prepared Mr. Bond to deal with www.chicagodefender.com
white folks, who never stopped their intention to oppress and deny Blacks the humanity they deserved. On January 10, 1966, Georgia state representatives voted 184–12 not to seat him because he had publicly endorsed SNCC’s policy regarding opposition to U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. A three-judge panel on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia ruled in a 2–1 decision that the Georgia House had not violated any of Bond’s constitutional rights. Never backing down, in 1966, the United States Supreme Court ruled 9–0 in the case of Bond v. Floyd (385 U.S. 116) that the Georgia House of Representatives had denied Mr. Bond his freedom of speech and was required to seat him. From 1967 to 1975, Bond was elected to four terms in the Georgia House, where he organized the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus. In January 1967, Mr. Bond was among eleven House members who refused to vote when the legislature elected segregationist Democrat Lester Maddox of Atlanta as governor of Georgia over the Republican Howard Callaway. Callaway had led in the 1966 general election by some three thousand votes. The choice fell on state lawmakers under the Georgia Constitution of 1824 because neither major party candidate had polled a majority in the general election. Bond would not support either Maddox or Callaway, although he was ordered to vote by lame duck Lieutenant Governor Peter Zack Geer. During the 1968 presidential election, Mr. Bond led an alternate delegation from Georgia to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where he became the first African American to be nominated as a major-party candidate for Vice President of the United States. The 28-year-old Bond quickly declined nomination, citing the constitutional requirement that one must be at least 35 years of age to serve in that office. Keeping with family tradition Mr. Bond returned to Morehouse in 1971 at age 31 to complete his Bachelor of Arts in English. With
Morris Dees, he helped found the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a public-interest law firm based in Montgomery, Alabama. He served as its president from 1971 to 1979. Bond ran for the United States House of Representatives from Georgia’s 5th congressional district in 1986. He lost the Democratic nomination in a runoff to civil rights leader John Lewis who had a larger national reputation as the man on the front lines of the Civil Rights Movement. So the nomination delivered the seat to Lewis, who still serves in Congress. Consequently haunted by allegations of drug use, Mr. Bond resigned from the Georgia Senate the following year. From 1980 to 1997, Bond hosted America’s Black Forum. He was also a commentator for radio’s Byline and NBC’s The Today Show. He authored the nationally syndicated newspaper column Viewpoint, and narrated the critically acclaimed PBS series Eyes on the Prize in 1987 and 1990. In 2012, Bond was centrally featured in Julian Bond: Reflections from the front lines of the Civil Rights Movement, a 32-minute documentary film by Eduardo Montes-Bradley. In 1998, Bond was selected as chairman of the NAACP. In November 2008, he announced that he would not seek another term as chairman. Ahead of his time Mr. Bond was an outspoken supporter of the rights of gays and lesbians. He publicly stated his support for samesex marriage. Most notably, he boycotted the funeral services for Coretta Scott King on the grounds that the King children had chosen an anti-gay mega-church as the venue. This was in conflict with their mother’s longstanding support for the rights of gay and lesbian people. In a 2005 speech in Richmond, Virginia, Mr. Bond stated: “African Americans … were the only Americans who were enslaved for two centuries, but we were far from the only Americans suffering discrimination then and now…. Sexual disposition parallels race. I was born this way. I have no choice. I wouldn’t change it if I could. Sexu-
ality is unchangeable.’ In a 2007 speech on the Martin Luther King Day Celebration at Clayton State University in Morrow, Georgia, Bond said, “If you don’t like gay marriage, don’t get gay married.” His stance positioned elements of the NAACP against religious groups in the Civil Rights movement, who oppose gay marriage. On October 11, 2009, Bond appeared at the National Equality March in Washington, D.C., and spoke about the rights of the LGBT community, a speech, which was aired live on C-SPAN. Always cutting on the edge Mr. Bond was a strong critic of policies that contribute to anthropogenic climate change and was amongst a group of protesters arrested at the White House for civil disobedience in opposition to the Keystone XL pipeline in February 2013. He was also an outspoken critic of the Bush administration from its assumption of office in 2001, in large part because Bond believed the administration was illegitimate. Twice that year, first in February to the NAACP board and then in July at that organization’s national convention, he attacked the administration for selecting Cabinet secretaries “from the Taliban wing of American politics”. Bond specifically targeted Attorney General John Ashcroft, who had opposed affirmative action, and Interior Secretary Gale Norton, who defended the Confederacy in a 1996 speech on states’ rights. In the selection of these individuals, Bond said, Bush had appeased “the wretched appetites of the extreme right wing and chosen Cabinet officials whose devotion to the Confederacy is nearly canine in its uncritical affection.” During his tenure with the NAACP he was a major contributor too much of the newly established relationships with television media executive opening the doors to greater opportunities for Blacks in positions which they were ordinarily not considered. On May 14, 2013, while on MSNBC, Bond called the Tea Party the “Taliban wing of American politics.” Bond told MSNBC, “I think it’s entirely legitimate to look at the tea party.” But he also said, “It was wrong for the IRS to behave in this heavy-handed manner. They didn’t explain it well before or now what they’re doing and why they’re doing it.” He called Tea Party members “a group of people who are admittedly racist, who are overtly political, who’ve tried as best as they can to harm President Obama in every way they can.” He added, “We all ought to be a little worried about them.” Like most innovators he expressed himself through the multi-disciplines that afforded him creative authenticity. He authored poetry, essays and commentaries, taught at colleges served as a television commentary and continued to confront white supremacy with a vengeance. He served Black people well and in doing so he served in America’s best interest. He always stood up against injustice. He made us proud. Bond died from complications of vascular disease on August 15, 2015 in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, aged 75.

Willie Wilson for President? When Willie Wilson threw his hat in the 2015 Chicago mayoral race the resounding question echoing in the street and bouncing off corridors was “Who is Willie Wilson?” And the answers ranged from, “He’s a reputable businessman to he’s a philanthropist.” Some even responded, “He’s Rauner’s guy.”
Wilson was never republican but reserves the right to be an independent thinker. However since then it has been revealed that Mr. Wilson is no joke. Out of five candidates, he came in third to the surprise of all. With such success for a non-politician’s first political race Mr. Wilson has thrown himself in the ring as candidate for President of the United States and is facing a notso-kind response from mainstream media and organizations that have not treated him respectfully. Mr. Wilson has described himself as a poor boy, who grew up in rural Louisiana as a sharecropper and had a lofty vision of a different life for himself and his family. He pursued that vision and became the self-made successful entrepreneur he is today. He also adds that just as he wanted to assist his family he seeks to do the same for others. In fact, “I’m inspired by helping others,” he says. Perhaps one of the most distinguishing things about Mr. Wilson is his down-to-earth and humble way when he speaks of the past that parlayed him to the successful entrepreneur he is. He is the epitome of the self-made man who pulled him-

self up out of poverty and achieved success beyond what seemed proverbial then. If he were running as a Republican, he could very well be the poster boy for the great American way. He deserves big points for owning and running Omar Medical Supplies, a very successful multi-million dollar annual international medical supply company. More importantly is his reason for entering the political arena in the first place. He actually decided to run for mayor because of his disappointment in the current mayor’s poor decisions and failure to consider their impact on the Black community. Issues like education, employment opportunities and failed safety issues that communities throughout Chicago face were the prime catalyst to enter politics. Wilson said, “I wanted to create parity in opportunities for Blacks and equal treatment for all people in Chicago. As candidate for president my interests are the same.” So as a proven successful businessman, why is he being snubbed? I’m asking you. To those who have a problem with how he speaks, let me remind you that neither Richard J. Daley nor Richard M. Daley could be described as very articulate. Nor was Eugene Sawyer. Rare are the great orators like Harold Washington or Barack Obama, but it doesn’t take away from Wilson’s business performance or acumen. He’s a difficult read because he doesn’t fit in the usual businessman or politician mold. Nor does Donald Trump. And although mainstream media criticizes Trump, he is not excluded as a player in the race. In fact, Trump’s command of the polls—as well as Mr. Wilson’s exclusion—has a great deal to do with the media’s willingness to give the microphone to Trump, a business man who has offended Hispanics, women, war veterans and more,
rather than highlighting Wilson, a businessman who has the Black community’s concerns at heart. Recently the National Urban League snubbed Mr. Wilson. I think that it’s a sad day when we have to acknowledge that an African-American organization whose mission is to enable African Americans to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights did not invite Mr. Wilson, an African-American Democratic candidate in the 2016 presidential race, to participate in the National Urban League Annual Conference that took place (July 29–Aug. 1, 2015). He was not invited, as were three Candidates, Hillary Clinton (D), Jeb Bush (R) and Dr. Ben Carson (R) specifically to participate in a session entitled Off To The Races: The 2016 Presidential Candidates’ Plenary. Wilson was disappointed—as he rightfully should be—yet continues to support their efforts. Since his announcement June 1, according to his camp he’s had no contact with the Democratic National Committee. Nor has his campaign been invited to the candidate orientation sessions and other pertinent meetings. He has reached out to DNC National Political Director Raul Alvillar; the state Democratic chairs in Iowa and New Hampshire—but has garnered no responses. Even his Congressman, Danny Davis IL-7, has reached out on his behalf and received no response. Both instances have Wilson concluding this treatment is un-Democratic and un-American So we have to ask what’s up with that? Here we are acting like the overseer treating Mr. Wilson like a field Negro based on what? Let’s see . . . his educational background, maybe? His articulation? Americans are great at playing the elitist game. We know all about it as Blacks who have been and are continually treated like third class citi-
zens. Why when we have the opportunity to demonstrate that we are not all monolithic in how we come to success, that we don’t all go to upper crest Ivy League or HBCU’s, or express ourselves the same, do we dismiss a man’s value? We are not all great orators, nor are all our experiences the same. To limit our view of the talented tenth is a mistake as Booker T. Washington explained to DuBois. Brilliance is revealed in a myriad of ways. By what standard are we evaluating candidates? Dr. Ben Carson has no experience in running a business. However he is our foremost brilliant brain surgeon and enunciates words and constructs sentences well. He sounds good yet he knows little about politics or the business side of running America. Interestingly enough, the Southern Christian Leadership Convention, the National Baptist and Progressive Baptist 2015 Convention, as well the National Black Chamber of Commerce invited him to participate in their events. These acts of exclusion are what we have experienced all our existence in America. We stand as witnesses to the blatant disrespect of President Obama and I think that we all should find it distasteful and unacceptable that we are now acting as our own oppressor. Is this not the behavior of the House Negro versus the Field Negro? We should respect him, because America takes its businessmen seriously. We should allow him the platform to speak, and give him a fair opportunity to prove himself. He couldn’t possible be any worse than Donald Trump who speaks more like a fascist than he does one who believes in the democratic process. But here’s the real point. Right now, Willie Wilson is the only person in the race who is concerned about what’s in it for Black people.

ENTERTAINMENT
The World of Cece Peniston: Staying Relevant By Mary L. Datcher Senior Staff Writer
Cece Peniston is not your typical R&B Diva. Her versatility, style and talent reaches far beyond voice. In 1991, she swept the radio airwaves with her first big hit, “Finally” an uptempo song that had the dance floors of every club packed. Produced by Chicago DJ and producer, Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley, the song showcased the not only her talent as a strong vocalist but fused soul music with the Chicago House sound. Soon after, another Peniston and Hurley hit was followed up by “We Got a Love Thang” along with “Keep On Walkin”—all reaching number one on the Billboard Dance charts. Nearly 25 years later, Peniston is going strong with non-stop shows and continued list of recorded projects that range in her ability to sing jazz, R&B and of course—dance music. With a voice that you would typically find inside the walls of a southern baptist church, her ‘dance card’ is always filled and in demand both in the U.S. and abroad. Peniston can recall her childhood and how she became influenced by music at an early age. “When I was a kid, I was probably like thirteen years old, I knew that when I got into the business there was one person that really impacted me and that was Patti Labelle. I loved her so much. She was powerful to me, when she was on the stage—she was funny,” she said. “I felt like she owned the moment, and I just felt like if anything happened—she just knew how to just go with the flow.” Growing up in Phoenix, where she still calls home, her music career continues to take her everywhere. Her reputation as a young, budding singer in her hometown when one day she was asked to do background vocals for a hometown female rapper, Tonya Davis aka Overweight Pooch. The title track of her song, “Female

Preacher” gained some solid ground movement on the UK Dance charts but not much traction in the U.S. Regardless, Peniston was buzzing around the offices of A&M Records going into record her first project. The hit song, “Finally” would be her first debut single at 21 years old. During her days as one of the leading artists at A&M Records, it was a time when music videos reigned supreme and artists were battling for video spins instead of radio spins. She said, “A music channel was actually a music channel. They weren’t reality show channels. I felt like you knew who the artists were. There was no social media. Everything was done by publicists. Everything was like the less people knew about you, the more that they wanted to know,” Peniston said. “It was the mystique of being an artist that was better. These days, if you don’t hit me back on Twitter or Facebook, you’re not paying attention.” Since Patti Labelle influenced her coming up, she’s also wears the seasoned singer’s cap very well giving props to the next generation of R&B singers making their mark. “I like K. Michelle because she’s real. She has a little ‘hood’ in there, but she’s not so far off the beaten path that you can’t understand her. She’s real R&B and I feel like women really relate to her very well,” Peniston said. “Jhene Aiko I really love her flow, too, because it’s like a singing-rap flow, you know? So I would say those are the innovators of the music.” Peniston has been where they are now and wears many hats, but her most important role is the ‘business woman.’ She finished filming a movie in Nashville, released a bathing suit collection, and currently training for her first fitness competition this Fall. In addition, she’s released an energy drink designed for pregnant women and filming a reality show. She continues to release new music including a song
she recorded for the late DJ and producer, Frankie Knuckles. One of her strongest qualities is writing, having co-penned a song with singer, Noel Gourdin. She said she keeps a daily journal to keep her thoughts and experiences captured on paper, she still loves to welcome people on the creative process.
“I analyze myself, the good things that have happened throughout the day and the bad things that happen throughout the day. Then I say to myself, ‘What could have been better?’ or ‘What could have been greater?’. I just keep trying to reinvent myself – that’s what I do,” she said. “I also have good family and friends around me – people who tell me the truth.”

Simple Things To Do Right Now For Healthier Hair
By Dr. Phoenyx Austin BlackDoctor.org Contributor
As a fitness specialist most of my days are spent doing things like developing workout programs and dishing out diet advice on my website and YouTube channel. In addition to the many fitness-related questions I receive like, “What’s the best workout to lose these extra 10 pounds of post-baby weight?” I also receive compliments and questions like, “I love your hair! How do you take care of it?” Now when it comes to my hair, first and foremost I practice a regimen based in simple, holistic principles like maintaining a healthy diet, getting regular exercise and practicing good clean livin’. I want to share four of my favorite holistic hair care tips that many women may not know, but every woman should follow. I guarantee you will see a significant improvement in the health and beauty of your hair! 1. Nix the tight hairstyles. Avoid tight hairstyles, because they are notorious for putting tension on the hair follicle and hair shaft – a big no bueno because tension is a leading factor in hair loss, and more specifically, a leading factor in traction alopecia (which is the medical term for pathological hair loss). FYI, traction alopecia is very commonly seen in Black women along their hairline and this type of hair loss is also totally avoidable when you nix tight hairstyling and choose looser hairstyles. I know some tight hairstyles may look fly for the moment, but they can and will murder your edges in the long haul. 2. Skip the sulfate shampoo and co-wash with conditioner instead. Active women are fine washing hair twice a week. That said, no matter how often you choose to wash your hair, avoid washing with shampoos that contain sulfates, because they can strip hair of mois-
ture, ultimately leading to dryness and breakage. When cleansing your hair you have two choices: 1) use a sulfate-free shampoo, or 2) forgo shampoo altogether and practice co-washing, which is washing hair with conditioner instead of shampoo. 3. Nix the heat and air-dry instead. Remember this always: Blow dryers, flat-irons and other heat styling tools all come at a price − damaged hair. And the more often you use these types of heat styling tools, the more damage you’ll do. Keep heat styling to a minimum and air dry your hair as often as possible. And trust me, I totally feel your pain when it comes to giving up heat because I used to be a habitual heat-styler before I went natural. But once I saw how quickly and significantly my hair’s health improved with zero-heat styling, I had no problem permanently retiring my blow dryer. If you simply can’t bear the thought of totally giving up your flat iron or blow dryer, then at the very least apply a heat protectant to your hair before styling. 4. Feed your hair with proper nutrition. When it comes to growing healthy hair, just heed this mantra and you’ll never go wrong: “Health first, and hair will follow.” Hair is over 95 percent protein, and your scalp lubricates and protects itself with a substance called sebum (which is made from fat). In terms of hair growth and scalp health, it’s very important to eat a balanced diet that contains ample protein and healthy fats. Also, regular exercise can further promote hair growth, because it stimulates blood flow to the hair follicle and hormone regulation. If you do these two simple things, you will be setting the foundation for hair that grows healthy, strong and beautiful from root to tip!

In the Bronzeville community, public safety issues like drug sales, shootings and violence are big issues. In the South Loop there are more issues like loitering and burglaries. The needs are just different!” Dowell said. There is no doubt that the third ward is growing, but where Bronzeville fits in that growth depends on whom you ask. There are those that are new to the Bronzeville area, hoping it will be the next big Chicago neighborhood to explode. The number of upwardly mobile Black and white families that continue to buy homes in the neighborhood evidences this. As you drive down certain blocks, it becomes apparent that Bronzeville has tremendous potential, but it is also on those same blocks that Hadiya Pendleton was killed after school in a park. The dichotomy of Bronzeville is real. Art galleries exist just steps away from where armed robberies occur. Mariano’s is opening up just blocks from 200 Liquors, which was the “almost” grocery store inside a liquor store. Peach’s and H-Dogs are located on the same 47th Street strip as Maggie’s Gyros. Bronzeville is two communities trying to figure out how to become one, but at whose
expense? According to Dowell, things are looking up because, “retailers make decisions based on income and demographics. I believe that the new Mariano’s will be a catalyst to spur development in the area.” She also points to the development of a new 25,000 square foot development that is set to open across the street from Mariano’s. Historically gentrification means that people of color are forced out of a community. While it sometimes requires convincing, it is generally not difficult to encourage Black residents to move, particularly if they rent or live in subsidized housing, which was something that Tillman said she fought to protect. “I fought hard to save public housing,” Tillman emphasizes, “to bring our community up.” Alderman Dowell has also taken on the public housing challenge by moving forward with the massive Carol Rosenwald project, that Dowell hopes will create 239 units of housing for seniors and working families. Dowell also says she hopes to bring commercial development, retail, a restaurant and a coffee shop to what was one of the most infamous corners in Bronzeville. Ironically, the Rosenwald project is the perfect metaphor for Bronzeville. The Rosenwald has a long history in the Black community, and not all of it is positive. As Alderman Dowell seeks to rebuild the Rosenwald project, she must keep just the history and nostalgia while combining it with a new vision to be successful. The same goes for Bronzeville.

Roasted Creole Cauliflower Slices

Donna Battle Pierce Defender Contributing Writer
With TV reports about Ferguson in the background, I was separating cauliflower florets from a garden-fresh head when I remembered a long-ago, late-summer evening around my parent’s dining room table. I grew up with a mom who was not only beautiful and smart, she was also a great cook. When guests pretended to ignore my turning down the special cauliflower dish with an exaggerated teenage grimace, Mom pretended not to notice my rude behavior. Instead, my mother, who knew I loved coleslaw, quoted Mark Twain: “Training is everything. The peach was once a bitter almond; cauliflower is nothing but cabbage with a college education.” Then, using a tone of voice I understood meant I had no choice in the matter, she gave me a scary post-dinner homework assignment. “Start with the Bantam Classics. With a new school year about to begin, it wouldn’t hurt to research the novel from which I’m quoting, ” she said. Don’t forget, this was long before the introduction of Internet searches. No wonder, I was a rebellious teen. But, looking back, of course she was right. Today, I collect racial quotes and references from literary greats, and I’ve grown to count cauliflower—the creamy white delicious member of the very healthful cruciferous food group—as one of my most-liked vegetables. Last week, when I decided to make a vegetarian meal out of roasted cauliflower and tomatoes, thoughts of Mom and Mark Twain also brought one of my all-time favorite writers to mind. In the early 1960’s, Langston Hughes described Twains treatment of race “as contemporary as Little Rock” in the introduction to the Bantam Classics edition of “The Tragedy of Pudd’nhead Wilson and the Comedy of the Extraordinary Twins.” Before roasting, feel free to toss the cauliflower with olive oil if you like, but I may add this to my “Skinny Soul” file by dry roasting the vegetable.
Roasted Creole Cauliflower Slices 1 head cauliflower, about 2 pounds 2 t ablespoons soul, Creole or Cajun seasoning 16 (or more) ripe cherry or grape tomatoes, halved Heat the oven to 425 degrees. To cut cauliflower into bite-size pieces, cut off the bottom stem up to the base of the core with a sharp knife. Cut off the bottom thick leaves. Cut off the thickest (and largest) florets growing around the outer edge, continuing until you reach the top curve of smaller florets. Cut or break these off. Cut large florets in half to lay flat on baking sheet; leave smaller florets in one piece. Place all the florets in a medium bowl; rinse with warm water. Drain without patting dry. Add soul food, Creole or cajun seasoning to rinsed cauliflower. Toss with your hands to coat all the vegetable pieces. Transfer to a foil lined baking sheet that has been sprayed or brushed with olive oil. Roast, turning as needed, until cauliflower begins to brown and become tender, about 20 to 25 minutes. Add tomatoes to the pan. Continue roasting eight minutes longer as tomatoes begin to release some of their juices and cauliflower deepens in color. Remove from oven; stir with a wooden spoon. Serve warm or cold as a side dish, snack or pizza topping.

I suggest getting a DUN number from Dun and Bradstreet. Once set up properly this will allow creditors to assess the credit worthiness of your business, separate from your personal credit. Without the DUN, creditors are forced to evaluate your credit worthiness using your personal credit history which would include many unrelated issues. Once in place build your business credit and reputation by using traditional techniques of obtaining credit. The goal is to develop relationships that provides access to capital. Access to capital is critical to that attention and separating your personal history from your business history is the place to start. Tip 3: Install a Retirement Plan There are many benefits for the small business employer offering a Retirement Plan. The top ones are: tax-deductible contribution, plan assets grow tax free, tax credits may be available and plans help attract the best employees. They also build essential personal retirement savings. The type of retirement depends on the particular profile of the business. Tip 4: Offer Health Care Coverage Offering health coverage places your business in more favorable competitive position because it attracts and re-
tains quality employees, it’s deductible business expense and it may also be a tax credit for your business. Tip 5: Develop a Continuity Business Plan Business continuity plans address various business disruptions. A few are buy-sell agreements, key man protection, individual DI insurance and DI retirement security. Buy-Sell Agreement facilitates the transfer of assets in the case where one of the owners or the owner is deceased. It may buy out the interest of the surviving spouse or make funds available for the employees to keep the business operational. Key Man Protection guards against the lost of a key producer, critical to the success of the business. It should provide funding until the resource is adequately replaced. Individual DI Insurance helps replace a portion of income if a disabling event occurs. DI Retirement Security helps continue saving for retirement if a disabling event occurs.
