The film industry in Chicago is riding a wonderful wave right now as production companies set their sights on the largest city in the Midwest region. What started out as a small outpost, settled by founder Jean Baptiste DuSable, has grown to multiple neighborhoods, communities, ethnicities and a merging of cultures. With a competitive tax break incentive put in place since the Richard M. Daley administration and Illinois state legislators, filming in 2013 Chicago has generated $358 million in revenue. Production companies working on television shows from “Chicago Fire”, “Chicago PD”, and “Empire” have ongoing production work for home base film professionals. Major feature films have also called the third largest city home for “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” ($24 million), Batman’ “Dark Knight” ($40 million) and “Public Enemies” generating $46.7 million. In addition to the new prospects of the George Lucas Museum here—it is sure to draw even more production power.

Most recently, we witnessed history made with the first African American actress, Viola Davis winning an Emmy for Lead Actress on a Dramatic Series, “How to Get Away with Murder,” which premiered on ABC for its phenomenal first season. In her acceptance speech she elegantly said, “You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there. So here’s to all the writers, the awesome people that are Ben Sherwood, Paul Lee, Peter Nowalk, Shonda Rhimes, people who have redefined what it means to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading woman, to be Black.’ The lack of opportunities for Black talent in Hollywood has always been a deep area of concern. But with the power behind the camera and behind the script, the diversity of talent has opened up lanes for more work for people of color. We thank the genius of creator and writer, Shonda Rhimes for producing a continual line-up of hit series, on a major television network beginning with ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy”, to “Scandal” and her new baby, “How to Get Away with Murder.” Her shows, present an African American actor either in a leading or co-starring role manifesting a diverse viewing audience. The success of ‘Shondaland’ on ABC Networks, has proved what many of us have known all along—Black Hollywood does matter. Academy Award director, Lee Daniels stepped into the primetime network lane bringing Fox TV his pilot, “Empire.” The network picked up the show, which is filmed on location in Chicago at the Cinespace Film Studios. A Bad Weekend for Chicago: 8 dead, 45 wounded in Gun Violence
By Claudette E. Defender Contributing Writer This past weekend e made it clear that things are not improving regarding gun violence. Eight people were killed 45 people were wounded in shootings between Friday evening and early Monday. This high ranks second most violent weekend in Chicago under the July 3-6, when 57 people were shot, eight fatally, according to data on shootings and homicides. When compared with non-holiday weekends, this past weekend was the worst with 53 people shot. The only other weekends when the number of gunshot victims reached 50 was Aug. 8-10 with 51 and Aug. 21-24 with 50. Amongst those fatally shot was 14 year old Tyjuan Poindexter. His broken hearted mother who did her best to protect him from the horror of urban street violence couldn’t save him. Michelle Poindexter explained that Tyjuan’s friends constantly teased him about her seemingly over protectiveness. Tyjuan was not in the social media mix. He had no presence on Facebook, Instagram or twitter and didn’t travel without a family chaperon. However on last Saturday, the 14-year-old Tyjuan begged his mother to let him go out with his friends unchaperoned. He asked her and initially she said no, “”He asked me again and I said OK, but please come back early,” said Michelle Pointdexter now distraught. She received a call later that evening with the news that he had been shot. He had been on his way to play basketball at 7:30 when a vehicle drove by and shots were fired at him and his friends from the car, according to the police report. Unfortunately Tyjuan was shot in the head. The injury caused his death before an ambulance arrived. He died in a driveway near the corner of 44th Street and South Greenwood Avenue in the North Kenwood neighborhood on the South Side. Poindexter points to the parents of those involved in the shootings and gangs for letting their children get out of control and destroy the community. Though, Ms. Poindexter makes a good point its not all black and white. Some of the children are the children of gangbangers. Further, the system has fed off of the negative and has helped 4 September 23-29, 2015 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
to perpetuate stereotypes, profiling kids, and people reinforcing that they are not to be trusted. Lack of training and employment opportunities, poorly funded schools, broken academic/liberal arts programs, single parent homes, poor health, drugs have all contributed to the breakdown of our communities. Ms. Pointdexter said that her son loved people and did not have a gang gene in him. What they represent went against his nature “Every time when I was down, he said, ‘Hey, Mom, what can I do?’ “ She explains that he leaned towards the artistic side. In his spare time, he’d draw designs for custom gym shoes. His idol was Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson because he loved wrestling. Ms. Pointdexter is having a hard time forgiving herself, thinking if only she had followed her first mind. The pain of sadness runs throughout her and her body still shakes. She spent a lot of time at the crime scene trying to understand. She returned to the scene of the crime trying to understand how it happened. All of which will not bring her son back. This she knows. Around midnight, the night of the shooting she paused to sit on a nearby stoop with a group of people looking at a row of cars and the evidence markers dotting 44th Street. She cried on her head on her mother’s shoulder. Then started walking again. Along with him were at least three other boys; one, a 15-yearold, had been shot twice in the leg. So what started out as the eve of his personal liberation stooped where it began. According to a police report, someone yelled, “Is that them,” from a car at 44th and Greenwood before the shooting started. Tyjuan’s mother corroborates that she heard that someone yelled out before the shooting. Kimberly Wells, the mother of the 15-year-old boy who was injured, said her son and Tyjuan had known each other since first or second grade and remained very close even though they were a year apart in age. Wells said her son, who recently began his sophomore year in high school, had set a goal to make it onto his high school basketball team this year. He had gone with Tyjuan and the other boys on their way to the park to practice during open gym Saturday evening. To his dismay he was robbed of his goal to make the team this year. His injuries will prevent him from moving forward with
basketball and force him to miss at least a month and a half of school. Wells describes her son’s injuries as one bullet in his right ankle and shin and suffered a graze wound to his left leg. He has three broken bones in his leg. Wells said, “He’s not good at all, he’s down and he’s upset that his friend is no longer here.” Wells credited police for a strong positive presence in the community. She said that the neighborhood has a very good rapport with officers who often interact with residents and are trying to develop good relations with teens. John Smith who lives on the only block away from where Tyjuan was fatally shot complains that, “Some of the grown folks are old G’s from way back and they’ve never gotten out of the game. So their children grow up in it as a way of life. It’s all they know.” He says, “Nothings going to change until the community takes back its community. We have to grow a backbone like the fictitious characters in Tyler Perry’s movie, “Daddy’s Little Girls,” but I’m no fool. I know that the G’s are cold-blooded killers. This gang violence ain’t no joke. We’ve all lost someone. And ova’ what for what? ” Pointdexter expressed that when she heard the news her son had been shot she was hopeful but once she realized that he had died she couldn’t breathe. That’s when she walked by Kennicott Park, where her son liked to play basketball. She had come there first after hearing the news — “I ran over here, I didn’t walk, I couldn’t breathe” — and zigzagged around the park trying to find her son, or at least catch a glimpse of an ambulance. When she realized nothing was there, she turned the corner and saw the crime scene tape. She rushed underneath until police stopped her from going any farther. “They didn’t want me to break down there,” she said. “But I had no choice.” She stayed outside the tape for hours, but kept walking. When Tyjuan’s body was removed and the police tape was torn down from the driveway where he had collapsed. She was Left. Isaac Monroe stood on that spot after police officers left. The driveway was Monroe’s, and he had seen the whole thing from his neighbor’s house next door. The other two friends who remained at the scene with their injured friends were joined by a neighborhood youth worker before first responders arrived, said Monroe, 63. The adult kept the boys away from Tyjuan’s body and told them not to move their injured friend. “ Hold his hand if you want, but don’t move him,’ “ he recalled the man saying. This is just one more reason the violence has to stop. It impacts everyone. These friends will never be the same. They witness their friends get shot, one injured one dead and the realization that they could have been injured or murdered as well is overwhelmingly Nearly five hours later, a detective borrowed Monroe’s hose to wash away the blood. Like most people Monroe never expected to see someone murdered in his driveway. He too is a victim of the violence. Monroe said, “I don’t know how soon I’ll get that image out of my head.”

OPINION
CHICAGO DEFENDER POWERED BY REAL TIMES MEDIA, INC.
E NOTES By Kai EL’Zabar
Defender Executive Editor
Save Us We’re fighting the war on so many fronts that it’s hard to stay focused and easy to get caught up in surrounding crap. This past weekend’s violence that left 8 dead and 45 wounded tipping the scales forward and ranking as the second highest numbers of people involved in gun violence. And though the report has not revealed the number of Blacks killed nor the number of those injured, we know that one or two is too many. We know that the young 15 year old who was fatally shot in the head along with his 15-year-old friend who was shot three times in the leg were innocent Black youth on their way to play ball in the park. They were shot by people that look like them. We know that 18-year-old Deionte Harris was shot to death after attending an annual peace basketball tournament. He met his fate Sunday morning in the 8400 block of South Hermitage. It is reported that he was shot multiple times. And we have to beg the question why and then take action whatever it takes to stop this random violence that strikes terror in our communities. His great aunt, Karen Howard-Thomas says she’s still “in disbelief.” That it can’t be real. It’s not real.” She’s baffled because her nephew didn’t indulge in the activities that usually attract riffraff. He didn’t drink, he didn’t smoke, he didn’t do drugs, he didn’t’ bang. Ms. Thomas says, “Harris was trying to avoid all of that.” He even joined St. Sabina’s Peace Basketball League. Similarly 44 blocks away Michelle Pointdexter’s 14 year old son who did none of those things either and who had never gone out unescorted was gunned down the
same weekend maybe just hours earlier. It was his first evening out unchaperoned. Father Michael Pfleger, pastor at St. Sabina’s, who sponsors the peace tournament, which brings rival gang members together to settle their scores on the court instead of on the streets say she last saw Harris at Saturday’s games. The following morning during Sunday service, he was informed that Harris had been murdered. “Nobody’s immune from this,” said Pfleger, who referred to Harris a “good kid” as was echoed by Harris’ family. Obviously not belonging to a gang does not spare one’s life but in some situations seems to exasperate the situation and the nonbangers become easy targets for the banger’s initiates. So while we’re busy fighting the system about police brutally and violence against us how to we justify that we will not tolerate the outsiders’ total disrespect and disregard for our lives when we have failed to teach our youth to respect themselves. Gangs are not new, rivalry is not new. But how we deal with it as a community is new. We don’t speak up any more when we see children doing wrong or misbehaving. And yes, I hear you. I know that you don’t because the parents’ response is not what it used to be when we were a community--back when we understood that we were extended family. That was when folks called each other ‘Brother’ and ‘sister’ before the Black power movement but rather it was a derivative of the church. After the Civil Rights Movement and the more militant movement of Black Power we still embraced one another as extended family. You were my brother , my sister and I was my brother’s keeper. We understood that we were in it together. We understood that it took a village to raise a child and it was taken very seriously. All eyes were always on us. It may have been strenuous but we knew we were loved and cared about. As community each child represented the community and was our responsibility. So you/we were every body’s business. A Baby Doe would never have existed back then. Everyone knew their neighbor, their neighbor’s children, and their families. So if anyone went missing it would have been reported.

The pain of losing a child, a father, a brother, a nephew, a cousin, a husband, a friend, a sister and so on is too much under the circumstances of terror. We experience terror from the system and within our own communities against us by us. This is the stress that also helps to sent us to an early grave. It is distracting and influences the attitude of our youth who imagine that there is no future. The rise of suicide has risen in the Black community where at one time we could boast that we did not kill ourselves. It’s true, I just spoke to a woman who shared that her daughter killed herself, as did her godson this past summer and a neighbor’s 9 year old then killed himself. So what do we do? Do we sit around and pretend that we will wake up one morning and the problems will magically go away? Or do we come together and have that conversation? We have to raise the questions about what to do about it. White folks had the conversation. And they decided to move the banging terrorist out of the inner urban cities. They have cast them out, retaken their cities and sent the riffraff to the suburbs, prison or the downward spiral of homelessness.
There’s so much to be said, so much to be fixed, so much to be done. And trust me I really thought that we’d be further along. But it is what it is. Where do we go from here, what do we do? I’ll tell you this it won’t be said, it won’t get fixed, and it won’t be done if we don’t begin. Even if you start out small it makes a difference. Envision just a few families gather to meet, to establish their concerns. From there you can invite, and or collaborate with the Church, the aldermanic offices, the police and take to task step by step what has to be done to make a change in our communities. Last week I said, we have to get back to knowing our next-door neighbors and the ones down the street too, well I’m saying it again. We have to be the change otherwise we are just as much a contributor to the problem as are the actual instigators. I said we have to accept responsibility for our communities. Each adult has to be invested in the community. Being silent and avoiding the violent has not worked. So let’s commit to change first and then move on from there. Let’s dare to confront the issues and concerns that plague our people.

NATIONAL NEWS Ben Carson Denounces A Muslim U.S. President “Not long ago, some people thought that a Catholic cannot be a president, an African-American cannot be a president,” said Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic relations. “They were wrong then, and they are wrong now.” He cited Article 6 in the Constitution, which states, “no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.” This statement like many others were prompted by Ben Carson’s response to a question posed to him by NBC’s “Meet The Press” host Chuck Todd during an interview, Sunday morning. The discussion was centered around Donald Trump’s failure to correct an audience member at a New Hampshire campaign rally who said President Obama was a Muslim. The same member seemed to advocate the forcible removal of Muslims from the U.S. When asked about his actions Trump stated that he was not obligated to defend the president every time someone says something bad or controversial about Obama. Our brother, the brilliant respected retired Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon Republican Candidate Ben Carson actually said, “I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that.” Here’s the thing, we don’t get to interpret what we think America should be like. We do have to know and understand the Constitution: Article VI of the US constitution states: “No religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.” The first amendment to the constitution begins: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof Though many us were shocked that Carson said something that is so politically incorrect, a June Gallup poll found that 54 percent of Republicans would not vote for a well-qualified Muslim nominee from their own party; 39 percent of independents and 27 percent of Democrats said the same. So “Carson is not going to lose any votes in a GOP primary with those comments,” said GOP strategist John Feehery. “He could probably gain a few.” Indeed, conservatives have repeatedly embraced anti-Muslim sentiment in recent years. www.chicagodefender.com

FRONT PAGE JUMP Empire, from Page 2 Since he was in his early teens, “Empire” camera operator Joe ‘Jody’ Williams can recall his fascination with working with a camera. “My grandfather used to shoot home movies of our family with the super 8 camera. He would project them at his home all the time. I would help him set up the projector. I remember that experience as being a fulfilling one— Just seeing images of my family, myself as a baby. On the weekends we would set it up, watching, laughing and listening to my grandparents with their running dialogue over the pictures,” Williams said. He grew up in Cleveland and he went on to attend Ohio University where he earned his Bachelors and Masters degree in film.
We manage everything on set in particular issues as they arise relating to the location or neighboring businesses,” he said..

David Leonard • Assistant Location Manager

After relocating to Chicago where he eventually connected with other Black filmmakers creating indie films and documentaries including Barbara Allen’s “The Paper Trail” he eventually struck up a working relationship with production manager, Richard Lederer. Lederer reached out to him to work on the pilot for “Empire.” “I can’t recall the first job where we actually met. However, I’ve worked on a lot production jobs here with him so he gave me a call over a year ago to come interview with the Director of Photography.” Unfortunately, Williams was on assignment working out of town on another film project but when the series was picked up by Fox, he reached out for the opportunity to be a part of the production crew.
Most importantly, the show has provided opportunities for African Americans to be a part of the magic behind-the-scenes when other companies lack diversity. The common denominator for industry professionals getting their foot in the door, is to know an insider who is connected and has relationships with decision makers.
the first season of “Empire”, earned her a promotion working with the Production coordinators for Season 2. “Thank God, I got this job because I needed it. In hindsight, you don’t necessarily know what God has for you sometimes. You may know what you want but when you really look back – you find out this is truly what you desire,” Smith said. “What I wanted is what I now have – to be able to be involved and have an opportunity to learn. I’m really grateful to be in this position.” In short, she’s living her dream.
Chicago native, David Leonard has worked between the film and the music industry over the last 15 years. For the last 5 years, he worked consistently on film production projects from a propane engineer, to production assistant and working his way up to his current position, Assistant Location Manager for “Empire”. “I am one of two assistant location managers. One of the main responsibilities of an Assistant Location Manager is scouting out locations. My role as assistant location manager is to be a liaison between the production company and the communities where we film. We negotiate deals to make sure that we’re providing a safe and efficient production. Also, I make sure that we’re not being too intrusive to the community. 10 September 23–29, 2015 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
Leonard, a graduate of Columbia College is pleased that he didn’t have to relocate from his hometown. He understands why so many film crews are filming in his backyard. “The architecture in Chicago is amazing! We have that great mixture of being a big city with a Down South ‘kind of a feel’. There’s a lot of productions that come through here so I’m always impressed with the following factors – Chicago is clean, the people here are nice and friendly and you have hard working production crews,” he explained.
Veteran hairstylist, Telona Wilson began her entry in the film and television industry as an intern on the Jerry Springer Show as a make up artist. Her passion for becoming a hairstylist began as a young girl growing up on the South Side of Chicago. “ I knew that I was born to do hair since I was 12. I had the job in the neighborhood of braiding everyone’s hair. Once I graduated from high school I knew that I wanted to become a hairstylist,” Wilson said. Currently her job is the primary hairstylist for the character of Anika Calhoun aka ‘Boo Kitty’ (Grace Gealey) on the set of “Empire.” Wilson first film job was on the set of “Barber Shop 2” in 2003, which she credits to an insider with whom she had shared her dream of working in the film industry, who in turn, mentioned her to a production type looking for a Black hairstylist. She said, “It’s definitely different from working in a salon. When you are working in television and film, you have to be dedicated and punctual. So if you have the dream to pursue this, know that it’s not easy – it’s long hours. It requires you to
be away from your family but the crew becomes your second family.” Wilson is grateful to fellow hairstylist and department head, Melissa ‘Missy’ Forney for the opportunity to interview for the position and giving her chance to be a part of the “Empire” production crew. As the rookie on the production staff is Production Office Assistant, Asia Smith, pursued her interest in the film industry by submitting applications as an extra on “Chicago Fire.” While working for Walgreens, she made a connection with a film worker with whom she shared her interest in working fulltime in the business. Working as an extra casting assistant on
In an industry where we recently, witnessed actor and co-creator of HBO’s Project Greenlight, Matt Damon explain to an African American filmmaker that diversity starts with the talent in front of the camera not the production—more shows like “Empire” is proving the opposite. Jody Williams has experienced the importance of diversity on film sets. He comments, “I’ve worked with Spike on multiple things. He’s a conscious filmmaker who I know will go out of his way to have people of color and women on his set – behind the scenes. I’ve worked with Tyler Perry as well and he employs a lot people in Atlanta both white and Black. Lee Daniels is doing something that I haven’t seen done like this before. He has the power and he’s not afraid to use it to help people get a fair shot.”

HEADLINE: TRIM SIZE: ISSUE:
Early Monday morning, State Representative Esther Golar (D-Chicago, 6) passed away. Sen. Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago, 3), was amongst those who joined close friends with keeping an around-the-clock vigil for the past several weeks in her hospital room. State Rep. was a Chicago Democrat known by colleagues as a gentle giant who quietly fought for the disadvantaged but often made her voice heard by singing her position on the House floor. “Representative Esther Golar was not only my colleague, but my dear friend. She was a genuine no nonsense person who looked out for the best interests of her district, Chicago and our state,” said Sen. Mattie Hunter. Rep. Gohlar may have made her exit from this life but not before she finished important business. She made her last appearance at the Capitol earlier this month to vote on the highly publicized vote (one vote Ken Dunkin missed) on high profile measures to stop service cuts for the elderly and disabled, prevent reductions in child care for the poor and support a union-backed bill to limit their ability to strike. The child care bill and the union measure failed. Many Democratic lawmakers starting with Speaker of the House Mike Madigan blamed one colleague who failed to show up when in fact 71 votes were needed and the bill was three votes shy of 71. According to colleagues, Golar fulfilled her last legislative obligation against doctor’s orders, and at one point had to go to a Springfield hospital to receive treatment for cancer. “For her, it was about doing her duty and standing up for working families in her district,” Harris said. “Her doctors told her not to go, and she said that in her heart it was something she felt she had to do.” “In the rooms where the doors were closed, she would never sit still or sit quiet-

ly for anyone trying to take things away from those who did not have a strong voice,” Harris said. “She was just fierce in protecting those who really struggle and don’t have lobbyists or aren’t politically involved.” Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth, D- Peoria, said Golar represented the best of public service at a time when Illinois politics is known more for controversy and scandal than statesmanship. Gordon-Booth said she often spent more time in Golar’s office than her own, seeking professional and personal advice from a colleague who quickly turned into a friend. “Esther was born before the Civil Rights Act, so she is a child of that movement, a witness of that movement and she became committed to fighting for people because she knew what it’s like to fight those battles,” said Gordon-Booth. “The institution, we are going to miss a giant. But on a selfish level, I am going to miss my friend.” In May, Golar broke out in song on the House floor in opposition to a plan backed by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner to limit collective bargaining rights, singing a rendition of the civil rights anthem “We Shall Not Be Moved.” Rauner issued a statement Monday hailing Golar as a “pillar of strength in her community,” saying she represented her district “with tenacity and grace.” Golar represented portions of the city’s Southwest Side. She was first appointed to the House in 2005 to fill the seat vacated by Patricia Bailey, who was convicted of felony perjury and forgery. Golar was a community organizer in Englewood who worked with the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy program. “For almost 10 years Rep. Golar has represented her constituents honorably and has been a selfless advocate for their interests,” Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said in a statement. “She understood that government is a vehicle of service, and operates at its best when it is collaborative. She was a believer in the strength of neighborhoods and communities, and was an ally on issues I hold dear: schools, public safety and health care. My sympathies go out to her family and close friends.” Reflecting about her friend, Sen. Hunter recalled, “We sponsored many pieces of legislation together, such as funding for after school programs, summer jobs for youth, education funding and criminal justice reform. With true commitment, loyalty and dedication, Esther loved to express her thoughts of feeling in song. I always referred to her as the ‘singing legislator,’ which I think will always be how we remember her.” “We all agree with Sen Hunter’s closing sentiment, “My thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time. She will be missed not only in Springfield, but across her district, as well.” Services will be announced.

mission and the expansion of that vision to fit the current time, I think it’s the utmost importance.”
here’s a new face on the scene at the DuSable Museum of African American History but not a stranger to the Hyde Park-Kenwood community—Perri Irmer. She has assumed the reigns as the fourth President and CEO of one of the country’s largest museum of African American History. Dr. Margaret T. Burroughs and Charles G. Burroughs founded the DuSable in 1957 to preserve African American history and be a center for thought leadership. The museum has experienced some shifts in its leadership in recent years as the board of trustees have had to deal with financial woes and shared input of the facility with the Chicago Park District.
Having worked on the design side at prestigious architectural firms, as an attorney with a concentration in construction law in both the private and governmental practice, as a private sector real estate executive and a public official for the City of Chicago—she is more than qualified to handle her new role as President and CEO at the DuSable Museum.
The latest concerns have been rumors of the museum’s neighbor, the University of Chicago possible interest in DuSable. It’s no secret that U of C has a considerable amount of community investment including a great deal of real estate that stretches into neighboring communities—Washington Park, Englewood and Woodlawn. More importantly the DuSable’s soon to be neighbor—The Obama Library will bring traffic in numbers never before experienced by the museum, could be a motivating factor for such an interest. Concerns from a community advisory board committee have challenged DuSable’s board of trustees in maintaining independence from the reach of U of C. A graduate of Illinois Institute of Technology Irmer earned her Bachelor of Architecture degree and later her juris doctor (J.D.) from the University of Chicago Law School. Irmer said she is very focused on maintaining the museum’s independence. She made it a point to mention that her mom, a retired Chicago Public School teacher and retired real estate broker along with her father, a local businessman raised her in their Hyde Park home.
“I’m really looking forward to meeting and collaborating with members of the community and various civic, cultural, educational groups. I’m also looking to create collaboration with other institutions – partnerships that would allow us to leverage resources for education, finance and culture. All of these are what the DuSable Museum needs. We can do that, certainly without giving up independence over our institution.”

Irmer: A New Chapter for DuSable Museum
“My roots are very deep in the community. I’ve always been involved in the community and a champion of minority owned business,” she said. “We are of the community. control of its precious collections.
Chicago was once considered the Black ‘Metropolis’ with the South Side of Chicago being a central hub of Black owned businesses flourishing and nurturing talent in all fields of industry, commerce and the arts. The decline of those companies that have made a global impact have either folded, sold out or are currently struggling in the shadows of their legacy. Many critics fear DuSable Museum could be its next victim on losing
Irmer is determined to maintain the museum’s mission but also broadening its base. “We all have a love for the DuSable Museum and we have a vested interest and a series of common goals for the museum and its success. Maintaining its independence as a cultural specific institution, a real jewel in Chicago and nationally for the African American population in general,” Irmer said. “The preservation of Margaret Burroughs

For seven years, Irmer was the CEO of the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority (ISFA), the government owner and operator of U.S. Cellular Field. Her responsibility was managing the ballpark’s annual budget of over $40 million and administered over $100 million in capital repairs and construction. Since her departure in 2011, she has worked as a consultant serving as president of her own company, Intellectual Resource Management Group, Inc. Her experience in both the private and public sector has prepared her to take on the economic challenges that not only DuSable Museum is currently enduring but other museums are faced with under the Illinois state budget constraints. “We’re all suffering the impact of the stalemate in Springfield. Fortunately, we don’t only depend upon government funding. We receive funding from the Chicago Park District. Also there’s monies being held up in Springfield,” still Irmer remains optimistic. “I’m hoping there’s a resolution soon. I’m going to be making a very big push for private and corporate donors. I think when you look at the buying power of Black Americans – over a trillion dollars. It’s incumbent upon us to knock on these doors and say to these Fortune 100-500 companies and tell them, ‘You’re reaping the benefits of African American buying power and we would appreciate your support of this African American institution in Chicago.’,” She said. In the tradition of her previous predecessors, experience and the passion for the community was never a problem—each executive brought their own unique relatedness. There is no question that Irmer has long and various antennas that will assist the DuSable’s brand. She has previously served on the board of directors of Choose Chicago, currently serves on numerous civic and charitable boards including the Alumni Board of Trustees ITT, World Chicago and a Trustee of the Catholic Theological Union. As a mother of three daughters—20, 30 and 33 years old, Irmer understands the voice of the next generation is vital in order to bring a new level of ideas to the museum. “I know that young people want to be involved and have an impactful role in policy, educational and civic participation. One of my top priorities is to encourage further involvement of a youth board at the DuSable. It is incumbent upon us as African Americans www.chicagodefender.com

CFC events influence students and parents to consider the rich academic and cultural opportunities offered by Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Ms. James embraces the mission and goals of the Classic: “It was indeed an honor and privilege to attend one of these institutions,” says James, a Howard University graduate. She is also a native Chicagoan who was raised in the south side Beverly area with her college educated parents and siblings. “I was raised in Chicago as the youngest daughter of two lovingly strict and hard-working parents, who encouraged and protected me throughout elementary and Morgan Park high school. They demanded the very best in us all, keeping us so 16 September 16-22, 2015 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
focused on school work and community involvement that we didn’t have the time or inclination to get into trouble. Nothing was more important than reaching college.” While serving the community is an option to some, Ms. James views giving back as her calling and obligation to those who are following in her footsteps. Through determination and hard work, she earned her Bachelor of Arts and Science from Howard University in May 2010, majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry. “I wasn’t the best or highest test-scoring student in high school,” reveals Ms. James, who feels her story could inspire some other young Chicago student to never give up on their dreams. “What I did possess, is an undefeatable spirit. Thanks to my strong family, and supportive teachers, I kept pursuing scholastic excellence and never, ever gave up. I received scholarships, including one from the Chicago Football Classic, to help pay for school. I am still making my dreams come true. ” While a student at Howard, James’ community contributions were integral to her success at the university. She served on numerous organizations, holding several leadership positions. Howard University is one of the country’s leading private universities. Founded in 1867 in Washington, DC, this highly-respected Historically Black College and University (HBCU) is home to 13 schools and colleges offering undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and professional degrees in a number of disciplines. Howard ranks among the top producers of the nation’s Black professionals in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, engineering, nursing, architecture, religion, law, music, social work and education. Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D., MBA is the University President. Currently, Danielle is a post-graduate scholarship student at Chicago State University, with plans to become a pharmacist. In her spare time, she serves as the President of the Chicago Howard University Alumni Club of Chicago. Under her progressive leadership, the group has grown exponentially, recently launching a new educational foundation for local students. Ms. James, as an alumnus of Howard University, takes her place among a long, prestigious line of business, political, educational and civic leaders who’ve made a significant impact in Chicago, including: Former U.S. Senator Roland Burris, Trinity UCC Pastor-Emeritus Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., business and civil rights leader Vernon Jordan, to name a few. Actress Taraji Henson, co-start of new blockbuster TV show Empire resides in Chicago during filming. A Larry Huggins remonds us that, “The Chicago Football Classic has as its primary mission promoting the long-term success of African-American youth, to achieve academic, personal and professionally-oriented excellence, while in school and in their future lives”. “We are very excited and honored to work with BMO Harris Bank and Sherman Dodge as our premiere co-title sponsors, to join us in our goal of encouraging higher education and greater HBCU awareness in the local African-American community,” says Everett Rand, co-founder of the CFC. “HBCU’s are vitally important today because they prepare their diverse student bodies with professional and technical skills, as well as the quality education, which will drive the jobs and opportunities in industries and businesses of the future.” Dr. Ebony N. Johnson, MD, MHA is a seriously focused woman of medicine - - a family practitioner who graduated from another east-coast HBCU located approximately 35-miles up the beltway - - Morgan State University. The Ohio native is a
relatively recent Chicago transplant who has grown to love and appreciate all it has to offer. “I greatly enjoy living in ‘Chi-Town’, but more importantly - - I am deeply committed to improving the health outcomes and well-being of African-Americans in Chicago.” Eunice Powell entered Morgan State University as a freshman with the intention of becoming either a social worker, or a counselor, because she knew from an early age that she wanted to help people. Today she does exactly that. As a Senior Training Specialist for the National Association of Student Aid Administrators (NASAA), she works, as she puts it, to help aspiring and enrolled college students ‘get the scholarship, loan and grant money, honey’. The academia, support of extened College family the firm, yet loving influence of her family has helped her blossom and transform into a woman through hard work, a finely honed sense of community commitment and a love of public service. “My father, my mother and several aunts and uncles were all very involved in my upbringing, so setting standards of performance and getting good grades were demanded and expected - - failure simply was not tolerated,” she emphasizes. One thing is for certain, they are each fiercely loyal to their historic alma-maters. Understandably, these highly accomplished professionals are eagerly looking forward to the 18th Annual Chicago Football Classic ‘gridiron get-down’ on Saturday, September 26th at Soldier Field with great anticipation. The three HBCU grads have crossed paths in various Chicago professional and social circles, and are anticipating a great turn-out of local and out-of-town alumni from both schools. laughs Ms. Powell, who serves as the President of the Morgan State University Chicago Alumni Association: “We’ve got a friendly, long-standing east-coast ‘Beltway Brawl’ football rivalry going on, let’s just put it that way.” Beams fellow Morgan alum Dr. Johnson, with undisguised pride: “All I’ll say is that last year, the Morgan State Bears emerged victorious at the end of our college football season - - and today are the reigning 2014 Mid-Atlantic Conference (MEAC) champions. Morgan State University locsted in Baltimore, Maryland is a mere 35-miles from Howard. Morgan is Maryland’s designated public urban university and the largest HBCU in Maryland. The University offers a comprehensive range of academic programs. Morgan is also a founding member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), and is under the current direction of President Dr. David Wilson. Notable Moran State alumni in Chicago include Cook County Commissioner Robert Steele (2nd Dist), Classical Baritone Garrett Jackson and Ron Collins, Executive Director of the Chicago Football Classic among others. Lee Hull, head coach for Morgan State University’s Bears shares Ms. Powell’s assessment, often quoted about the school’s appeal and supportively nurturing environment. “Morgan has a close-knit family atmosphere and we take care of our students. Everyone here is service-oriented and accessible. We have a well-deserved reputation and solid record of academic success and a good nurturing environment in our department, because our entire faculty, including coaches interact with our students on a regular daily basis as instructors, mentors and surrogate family.” So, what’s the ‘score’ for September 26th at Soldier Field? With a little help from alumni, supporters and friends, this will be the best Chicago Football Classic ever! Come out and join the celebration on Saturday, September 26 at 3:30 p.m.! www.chicagodefender.com

Where Does Your Chicken Come From? By Carole E. Edmond Defender Contributing Writer “The whole truth and nothing but the truth . . .” If you think that the chicken that you’re eating came from a farm in U.S. straight to your table, it may be only half of the truth. It may have taken a little detour. Earlier this past summer the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently gave the green-light to four chicken processing plants in China, allowing chicken raised and slaughtered in the U.S. to be exported to China for processing, and then shipped back to the U.S. and sold on grocery shelves here. Furthermore, the imported processed poultry will not require a country-of-origin label nor will U.S. inspectors be on site at processing plants in China before it is shipped to the United States for human consumption. So the first question is what kind of sense does that make? Truth is it makes good cents for the food companies. Yet all that transportation back and forth of dead flesh is too much time between it getting into the grocery store for human consumption as far as freshness goes. The process leaves room for foul play. Food safety experts worry about the quality of chicken processed in a country notorious for avian influenza and food-borne illnesses. And they predict that China will eventually seek to broaden the export rules to allow chickens born and raised in China. The point is that it’s going to happen no matter all the shipping back and forth because it’s about the M-O-N-E-Y. The Bureau of Labor Statistics data estimates that American poultry processors are paid roughly $11 per hour on average. In China, reports have circulated that the country’s chicken workers can earn significantly less—$1 to 2 per hour—which casts doubt on Super’s economic feasibility assessment. This process is already being used for U.S. seafood. According to the Seattle Times, domestically caught Pacific salmon and Dungeness crab are currently being processed in China and shipped back to the U.S., all because of significant cost savings: Fish processors in the Northwest, including Seattle-based Trident Seafoods, are sending part of their catch of Alaskan salmon or Dungeness crab to China to be filleted or de-shelled before returning to U.S. tables. “There are 36 pin bones in a salmon and the best way to remove them is by hand,” says Charles Bundrant, founder of Trident, which ships about 30 million pounds of its 1.2 billion-pound annual harvest to China for processing. “Something that would cost us $1 per pound labor here, they get it done for 20 cents in China.” This they do knowing that China has an infamous reputation as one of the world’s worst food safety offenders. Earlier this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a report on a Chinese chicken jerky manufacturer that created dog treats tied to more than 500 dogs’ deaths. Parents be on the look out. Food Safety News aims to spread awareness of the pending USDA agreement and stop Chinese-processed chicken from ever reaching supermarkets or school lunchrooms.
