If you drop out of high school, basically your days are numbered, according to statistics from a variety of studies – as well as from common sense observation.

Any dropout is trying to run the race of life with a yoke around their neck, but for Black males, the dropout situation is even worse. Even for high school graduates, the gap between Black males and their white peers continues to grow. In 2012, the four-year graduation rate for Black males widened to 21 points, whereas it was only 19 points in the 2010 school year. That’s according to a new report called “Black Lives Matter: The Schott 50-State Report on Public Education and Black Males.” For Latino males, the gap shrunk from 20 percent to 15 percent during the same period. The study shows that the national graduation rate for Black males was 59 percent, 65 percent for Latinos, and 80 percent for white males for the 2012-13 school year. Particularly striking was Detroit, where only 20 percent of Black males graduated on time, while Illinois had a gap of more than 25 percentage points between Black and White male graduating high school students. John H. Jackson, the Schott Foundation’s president and CEO, says, “This report is about making a declarative statement that Black lives matter not only after they die, but they matter also when they are living. “It is important to highlight particularly the Black male population in this instance because, as our data indicate, in 35 of the 48 states as it relates to four-year graduation rates, Black males are at the bottom.” And that’s bad news if you manage to graduate from high school. For those who don’t and drop out, things are even worse. For them, another report from the National Urban League stresses that on any given day, nearly 23 percent of all young Black men aged 16 to 24 who have dropped out of high school are in jail, prison, or a juvenile justice institution in America…and this is compared to only six to seven of every 100 Asian or White dropouts. This report was called “Consequences of Dropping Out of High School: Joblessness and Jailing for High School Dropouts and the High Cost for Taxpayers.”

meet and certainly not enough to reach the American Dream of raising a family and buying a home. The report noted that the mean annual earnings of the nation’s young people with a bachelor’s or advanced degree was three times higher than the mean earnings for dropouts. The limited earnings potential of dropouts mean many never leave their parents’ or relatives’ homes to form independent households. The study said that nearly 37 of every 100 dropouts live in poor or near-poor families. Prologue Graduates And yet another new report by the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Great Cities Institute found that 47 percent of young Black men aged 20-24 in Chicago aren’t working or in school, compared to 32 percent of Black men nationwide. For Chicago’s white youth aged 20-24, only 6.7 percent were out of school and out of work. Phil Jackson, head of the Black Star Project, says, “Now we know why Chicago is leading the nation in shootings and murders. If young Black men are not working and are not in school, violence becomes predictable.” An educational stalwart, Jackson laments the fact that other studies show that only 10 percent of Black boys in 8th grade read proficiently at an 8th grade level – and that number is only seven percent for Black 8th grade boys in Chicago. “Youth employment is not only a vital and effective violence prevention vehicle, but also a means for encouraging youth to stay in school and provides much-needed financial support to youth and their families while serving as a critical steppingstone to future employment,” said Jack Wuest, executive director, Alternative Schools Network. “The staggering number of Black and low-income teens who were jobless in 2012 provides a sobering reminder that we must do everything in our power to find jobs for all of our young people.” See Dropout, Page 07

As we watch the seemingly endless budget battle between the Democratic legislative majority led by House Speaker Michael Madigan and the Republicans led by a determined Gov. Bruce Rauner, we are left to wonder if these two state government leaders understand the misery that this stalemate has caused the people of Illinois. Chicago’s safety net has been pulled down and stomped on! Every state funded social and educational institution has been crippled by this ineptness. This includes the Chicago Public Schools, Lutheran Social Services, Catholic Charities, and numerous Black social service agencies that are unable to operate without state subsidies. Because Black agencies have little or no reserves, many have had to close down operations. However, the lack of state funding has captured national attention because of the colleges and universities. All of the state’s public colleges and universities with the exception of the University of Illinois are either on the brink of closing their doors at the end of this semester, laying off teachers and administrators, eliminating academic programs and entire departments, or cutting back on their commitment to low-income students because of the lack of state funding assistance for tuition. This crisis is particularly acute within the Black community of Chicago. The majority of low-income Black students in the city attend Chicago State University (CSU) and Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU). These two universities are primarily commuter schools that typically have a large number of Black female undergraduates, many of whom have children. Most of the Black male students work during the day and can only attend classes that are scheduled after 5 p.m. Evening classes (after 5 p.m.) are being cut back because of low enrollment, which puts Black students, especially Black males, at a severe disadvantage. Added to this dilemma is the reality that daycare services, state funded tuition aid and book vouchers are not available. Currently, the average student could spend more than $500 per semester on books and supplies required for classes. These expenses that occur in conjunction with a student’s readiness for classes highlight the need for an end to the budget crisis.

Black College Students

And The State Budget Crises

While 80 percent of CSU’s students are Black, most of its teachers, both full-time tenured and adjunct, are White. CSU has 4,500 students and some 300 full-time and part-time faculty. Of the 300 teachers at CSU, 55 percent are women and 45 percent are male. Thus, Black males at this institution do not have the much-needed Black male leadership and role model presence. Black females at CSU comprise 71 percent of the student body, while 29 percent are male. The school has a two percent four-year graduation rate, while the six-year graduation rate is 19 percent. While CSU is often referred to as a Historically Black College or University (HBCU), it is not. Founded in 1867 as a normal school to train teacher, it was later called Teacher’s College South and its sister institution on the North Side (NEIU) was called Teacher’s College North. In the 1960s, Teacher’s College South took the name of Chicago State University when it expanded its offerings and later moved to its present location at 95th and King Drive. The financial crisis at CSU has been simmering since the beginning of the fall semester when adminisChicago State’s Situation trators realized that they would not Close examination of this situation receive state funding because of the reveals that the problems facing Black state budget stalemate. students at CSU and NEIU are multiCSU and other state universities plied by the lack of state funding. have been operating without state 04 Feb. 24 - Mar. 01, 2016 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

funding since July of 2015. Administrators and members of the Board of Trustees have stated that they require about $5 million a month to operate. Accordingly, about $36 million, or 30 percent of its operation budget comes from the state, and the rest is made up from tuition and foundation funds. Analysis shows that only three percent of the budget for contracts is given to Black contractors. Since there is no end in sight to the crisis in Springfield, the school has declared a financial emergency in accordance with the traditions and guidelines of the American Association of University Professors. This declaration allows the university to begin plans for layoffs, cut backs of programs, closure of buildings and other cost saving measures. This crisis has sparked student demonstrations on campus and throughout the city. Students have shut down the Dan Ryan Expressway, attended legislative sessions in Springfield, and picketed the Governor’s office in downtown Chicago. This financial crisis is especially painful for the CSU basketball team, because they have had to scale back on their travel and other necessary expenses that accompany a competitive sports program. In fact, the entire athletic program offerings are now subject to cuts and possible eliminations.

NEIU has a total enrollment of 8,000 students. Approximately 1,000 of them are enrolled at the Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS), located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd. on the South Side of Chicago. The majority of the students and CCICS faculty are Black. NEIU has been declared a Hispanic Serving Institution, with a majority of its students coming from the Hispanic communities in and around the city. CCICS was founded in 1968 at the height of the Civil Rights Movement to train teachers and inner-city serving professionals to look at the inner city and its residents from an African American perspective, without the traditional racist perspective. CCICS has graduated the majority of the Black students that have received undergraduate and graduate degrees from NEIU. At the same time, almost none of the contractual budget spent by the university is given to Black contractors. Less than 10 percent of the NEIU faculty is Black, while almost the majority of the Black students at NEIU are enrolled at CCICS. Black students at NEIU suffer from the same problems that plague CSU. In a recent statement, President Sharon Hahs declared that “We will be able to make it through the end of the semester; however, if we do not receive funding after May, our summer school and fall semesters are in danger!” In the midst of this statewide crisis, one is forced to question the sanity of the state legislators and the governor. Black citizens are now bombarding their state legislators with questions of when and how this crisis will end. Ironically, most of the Black state legislators received their degrees from state schools. Most of those who have received degrees from state schools attended either CSU or NEIU. The great majority of Illinois voters either did not hear or understand the tone and tenor of Governor Rauner’s campaign rhetoric when he stated that he was determined to hold the budget hostage until he was guaranteed an agreement to his turn-around program to transform the state government. If they did, he may not have received the majority of the votes that won him the election. Some observers have suggested that we ask his three high-profile African-American supporters (Reverends Willie Wilson, James Meeks and Cory Brooks) to explain the governor’s actions and tell us when and how we will be able to break this stalemate. www.chicagodefender.com

From Black Panthers To Black Lives Matter Hope you took the opportunity to see The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution, an independent film that tell the story of the rise and fall of the Black revolutionary vanguard party for the people. I hope that the youth who read this column in particular had the opportunity and if not, that you make it a priority to do so and that you share it with family and friends. No matter what you thought you knew about the Panthers and or what you’ve read, the documentary by Stanley Nelson will provide insight into the inner workings of the organization, its motivation and the manipulation of John Edgar Hoover, the first Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation of the United States who set out to destroy the Black Panther party, and did exactly that. J. Edgar Hoover was also the mastermind behind the demise of President John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Malcolm X, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It’s clear that his organized efforts to paint a negative picture of the Panther party and its members as terrorists was deliberate to destroy their credibility when they had not terrorized anyone. When Richard Nixon was elected, he was explicit in extending full power to FBI director Hoover to repress the Panther movement.

What the Black Panther Party did was intimidate the authorities because they were knowledgeable of their rights. The fact that the Panthers wore their weapons publicly daily in full sight of the law and others threatened J. Edgar Hoover’s sense of control. The idea of the hunted carrying guns – though it is their Constitutional right to bear arms – openly upset the applecart. The armed Panthers signaled that “no longer” could the police, or anyone else for that matter, attack a Black man without resistance. Malcolm X, who was the face of the warrior for most Black men in America at that time (and still is), had a direct influence on the formation of the Panthers. He had been a target of J. Edgar as well. Malcolm X founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU) with John Henrik Clarke and other black nationalist leaders on June 24, 1964 in Harlem, New York, shortly after his break with the Nation of Islam. The OAAU was designed to encompass all peoples of African origin in the Western hemisphere, as well those on the African continent. Malcolm X insisted that progress for African Americans was intimately tied to progress in Africa, and outlined a platform of five fronts for this progress called “The Basic Unity Program.” This program called for Restoration, Reorientation, Education, Economic Security, and Self-Defense as a means of promoting Pan-African unity and interests. With a strong focus on education as the primary means of repairing the damages of slavery, economic discrimination, and physical violence directed towards African Americans, the OAAU hoped to foster pan-African consciousness. Among the more controversial positions taken by the OAAU was the suggestion that leaders of African states held more legitimate political power for African Americans than did the American government. Malcolm X was assassinated February 21, 1965, 51 years ago.

Evolution Of Leadership Much of his platform was picked up by the Black Panthers, in particular the ideology of Restoration, Reorientation, Education, Economic Security, and Self-Defense as a means of promoting Pan-African unity and interests. They even took the cause international when Eldridge Cleaver retreated to Algeria in exile. What has never been made clear is that the Panthers evolved from one thing to another, just as Malcolm X

had. It’s the nature of leadership, to evolve and grow. The Black Panthers began as the vanguard organization to protect the people, founded in 1966 (a year after Malcolm’s assassination) as the Black Panther party for Self-Defense. It originated in Oakland, California under the leadership of Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. The Panthers

They started free breakfast programs, sickle cell anemia research, and nutrition classes in their communities, among many other programs. They were not a hate group. They did not promote hatred towards Whites or anyone else. They did promote eradication of racism. The Pan-

“…The defiance that sends a message that they’re sick and tired of all the abuse on so many levels and that they are not going to accept the blatant physical violence.” supported the Black Power movement, which stressed racial dignity and self-reliance. The Panthers represented the youth of that time, the same as the Black Lives Matters group movement is representative of today’s youth. They were full of energy, testosterone and the need to take charge of their own lives. They were not fully satisfied with the peaceful passive-aggressive style of the Civil Rights Movement. Still, they addressed and sought to confront issues very similar to today’s Black Lives Matter protesters: namely, the police. But the Panthers was not just a pro-Black militant organization taking up arms to protest what they viewed

thers were a movement, an ideology, a way of living. There’s a definitive moment in the film when a reporter interviews the late Julian Bond, a leader of Blacks who addresses why the Panthers were so attractive to the youth and the rest of Black America. Bond explains that they represent that warrior spirit, that defiance that sends a message that they’re sick and tired of all the abuse on so many levels – housing, employment, and other areas of opportunities where the disparity between whites and Blacks are obvious – and that they are not going to accept the blatant physical violence. At one point he said, “Look at them, their style, their poise, their

cool. Every young Black man wants to be like that.” When asked if he planned to join the Black Panthers, Julian Bond once said, “Not today or tomorrow at any rate. But maybe the day after.”

Demise And Birth Anew Of course Julian Bond had backbone and spoke out against the Ku Klux Klan and pointed fingers at white folks and charged that white government officials engaged in conspiracies against Black people. In 1970, United Press International reported Bond’s accusation that there was a “conscious conspiracy” by all law enforcement agencies in the country to eradicate the Black Panther Party, including efforts by President Nixon to stage rigged trials for its members. “There seems to me to be a conscious conspiracy on the part of local police forces and state police forces and the federal police force, the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” Bond said. “I think it comes from President Nixon and Attorney General Mitchell making a serious attempt to destroy the Black Panthers. They do it in two ways – by political assassination and by political trials, the kind they have in the Soviet Union.” The reactions of white lawmakers to the Black Panthers arming themselves was to disarm them, destroy their credibility and wipe them out. And they ended up successfully changing gun laws in California, formerly an open carry state. Worse, they killed off, imprisoned and or destroyed the spirit of the rest. They succeeded in the destruction of the Black Panthers. They began with the imprisonment of Huey Newton, then the murder of 16-year-old Bobby-Hutton, the exile of Eldridge Cleaver, the charge of murder and conspiracy against the Panther 21, and the arrest and jailing of Bobby Seale. The chain of events continued with the murder of Illinois Panther leaders Fred Hampton and Mark Clark in Chicago, followed by the shoot-in of Black Panthers in Los Angeles. The planned orchestrated demise was like a cancer that fed off of what was actually a beautiful life beginning with great potential then taken down in its prime. All the things that mattered then still matter now – like freedom, education, housing, and police brutality, which were all part of the Panther 10-point platform borrowed from Malcolm. Most important, the Panthers were targeting the “brother on the corner.” Are Black Lives Matter organizers trying to find “the brother on the corner,” or are they trying to appeal more to the media? www.chicagodefender.com

Dropout, continued from, Page 02

T he Prologue Alternative

One answer to the problem is to try to reclaim the dropouts – to get them back in school and try to put them on a path towards some semblance of a normal, productive life. Unfortunately for Chicago, when Mayor Rahm Emanuel took office in 2011, the Chicago Public Schools tried to get a detailed count of students between 13 and 21 who were no longer on the attendance rolls and unaccounted for (dropouts) – and it ended up with between 50,000 to 60,000, the number still generally bandied about five years later. CPS set out to re-enroll them through its Student Outreach and Re-Engagement Program (SOAR), which about 1,700 former dropouts participated in as of 2014. A number of them have earned their high school diplomas. CPS also offers other alternative programs for dropouts, including online schools and schools run by for-profit organizations, with various degrees of success. One non-profit institution that has long had its hand in the continuing education of students who drop out of school in the Chicago area for one reason or other is Prologue, Inc. Spokesman Jerry Thomas says, “Prologue is one of the nation’s oldest organizations providing alternative education for at risk teens and young adults in Chicago. For more than 40 years, it has provided a second chance for young people, who for a variety of reasons were unable to originally succeed academically in traditional school settings.” Prologue was founded in 1973 by Sister Alice Trebateski, from the order of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, and Athena Calegores, to provide education and support services to disadvantaged neighborhoods and to low to moderate-income youth between the ages of 17-21 who have not succeeded in Chicago’s traditional high schools. In 1995, Prologue was granted funding by CPS to develop alternative educational programs and opportunities for students who were pushed out, left out, or dropped out of the school system prior to graduation. “Since 1995, we have established four alternative high schools for the purpose of providing young adults, mainly on the South Side of Chicago, with high school diplomas or GED certificates,” says Prologue executive director, Dr. Nancy Jackson, head of the charter chain. “Since Prologue’s inception, each campus has graduated 85 percent of its senior classes and over 70 percent of these students have entered college.” www.chicagodefender.com

Houston Alternative Charter High School at 7847 South Calumet Ave.; and • Winnie Mandela Intergenerational Alternative High School at 7847 South Jeffrey.

“The staggering number of Black and low-income teens who are jobless provides a sobering reminder that we must do everything in our power to find jobs for all of our young people.”

Prologue schools are North Central Accredited and recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education and the organization also operates several programs scattered throughout the city that address various social ills of the community. In 2007, Prologue became a Renaissance 2010 contract schools partner with CPS, and since then has been providing the educational programming, social support and school climate needed to help over 1,225 of Chicago’s most vulnerable youth complete high school education and prepare for positive futures. Yearly, Prologue helps hundreds of students earn their diplomas and secure jobs. Annually, more than 100 students graduate from Prologue’s

ties, such as Spellman College in Atlanta and Chicago State University. “Most of the students targeted for Prologue have dropped out of regular public schools in the area for a combination of complicated reasons,” says Dr. Jackson. “They come to us by choice having had negative academic and, in many cases, life experiences. Traditional education has not worked for them. “Prologue has seen that with high expectations and a holistic approach to education, these students can succeed. Our goal is to prepare students with the knowledge and skills needed to successfully enter college or a career, with a high level of self-esteem so they can also succeed personally.” The students who enter the school, though still very young, have faced a variety of issues – problems at home, early pregnancies, drugs, incarceration, homelessness, loss of one or both parents. Sometimes they just couldn’t fit in a traditional school setting. In fact, most dropouts who re-enroll don’t go back to traditional high schools, primarily because it didn’t work for them before or they’re aging to the point that by the time they earn enough credits to graduate, they would be past the age of eligibility. “So,” Jackson says, “We offer them a second chance where they can make good decisions. Keep their heads up, take care of their families and do the right thing.” The interesting part of Prologue is its recruitment process – they literally go to the streets to get their potential student base. School representatives drive the streets where dropped out students may be hanging out on school days and pass fliers to those who might be eligible to enroll and to those who might know someone – friend or family member – who may be able to use the schools’ services. “We are doing a major push to recruit dropout youth who are out there on these streets in danger of being incarcerated and in danger of all the things that randomly happen to youth and young people when they are not in school,” says Dr. Jackson. “School is a safe place to change the trajectory of their lives. We are making a major push to attract them while there are seats available.” In completely novel, cutting-edge planning, Prologue is about to open the city’s first maritime academy for high school dropouts, hoping that it will open their eyes to new educational opportunities and get them jobs in the growing maritime industry.

time high schools across the country. It will train in the maritime, environmental and ecological fields and students will learn science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) focused skills. Located at 13421 South Vernon Avenue in the Riverdale Community, Tillman Academy is near two housing developments, Altgeld Gardens and Golden Gate, where Prologue is working with at risk youth and young people. The Academy will also be the first of its kind to be spearheaded by an African American and led by a human services, non-profit organization

“The Academy will train young people for work in the resurging maritime industry, which forecasts many jobs over the next decade due to increased demand for new vessels that will transport products to and from the U.S,” Jerry Thomas explains. “It does not require a college degree, and the wages are also very good.” If you are between the ages of 17-21 and out of school, or know someone between those ages not attending school, please call 773/935-9925 or email http://www. prologueschools.org.

BLACK HISTORY Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer Traveling along the beautiful highways of Florida can be tranquil and serene, with the low hanging palm trees. It’s a beautiful sight to see along the rural roads in some of the state’s small cities, but each road leads to either another road of new discoveries or a dead end of dreams. The Chicago Defender had an opportunity to visit and explore the small town of Fort Pierce, Florida – a quiet fisherman’s town within St. Lucie County. Fort Pierce is not your typical Floridian destination; it’s a quiet community with rich history that spans back to Spanish settlers during the early 19th Century. In the mid-1800s, many runaway slaves and Seminole Indians retreated to the area and laid down roots as a refuge. In 1905, St. Lucie County was established out of the southern part of Brevard County with its home in Fort Pierce. As you travel through the town’s sleepy streets, some areas are timeless as vintage turn-of-the century homes still rest in the heart of Fort Pierce’s downtown. If these roads could speak, they would reveal the rich history of the Deep South. Moreover, they would reveal the last years of its most notable and famous resident – author and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston. The legend of Hurston is a most interesting story to examine. In fact, today her works are used as examples of getting a clearer understanding of a period that timelessly resonates with similarities to our social issues today.

The Legacy of Zora Neale Hurston Lives

Early Life And Career Hurston was born January 7, 1891 in Notasulga, Alabama – a small town of 14 square miles in the Auburn area where her family eventually moved to Eatonville, Florida. She grew up in the first incorporated Black township. Her life’s story has graced many publications, books, and plays along with academic conferences and annual festivals bearing her name. Her famous published works include Jonah’s Gourd Vine (1928), Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937) and Tell My Horse (1938), along with hundreds of short essays, plays and featured articles for newspapers such as the Miami Herald, the Pittsburgh Courier and Fort Pierce’s only Black-operated newspaper, The Chronicle. From Moses, Man of the Mountain (1939), leading to her autobiography, Dust Tracks on a Road (1942), going on to publish Seraph on the Suwanee (1948), Hurston continued to write up until her death in January 28, 1960.

A former student, Marjorie Harrell, recalls meeting Hurston at Lincoln Park Academy. “We would’ve probably gathered around her more, but to us, she was a weird lady. We didn’t call her that out loud because your neighbors would beat you on the way home and then your Momma would get you when you got home,” Harrell said. “Just to have her and not understand who she was. I went to Hampton Institution, John Ready and to FAMU, where I completed my education. Neither one of those institutions told us about Zora Neale Hurston. “So, I had to leave home, come back and happen upon the dedication of the library in order to find out about this woman who was my teacher. Since then I’ve read everything written about her.”

Harrell is currently writing a book, Zora: As We Knew Her. In her seventies now, she is gathering a few of her classmates that are still living to contribute. A grandmother and one of the town elders remembers owner and publisher, C.E. Bolen, who invited Hurston to Fort Pierce to write for his newspaper. As a young teenager, she remembers Bolen recruiting young people to help him report, file, deliver papers and drive him around town. “He would come to folk’s homes and say, ‘Hey boy, hey girl, come on, help me with this paper so I can keep it going!’ He didn’t give you no salary and you couldn’t say no.”

somewhat eccentric and intriguing author. Arlene Benton, the eldest daughter of Dr. Clem C. Benton, was a young teacher starting out at the only Black high school in town, Lincoln Park Academy. “My father and Zora were both from the Orlando area,” she said. “Their families knew each other. He introduced me to her at his office, but he told me later on at home that she was a famous writer.” Hurston was invited one Sunday evening to the Benton’s home for dinner. At the time, she was working on what would be her last novel, Harold the Great. They found themselves at the dinner table, where Hurston’s work The Eccentric Author would be the centerpiece of the disArlene and Margaret Benton, both cussion for most of the evening. “Dad would ask her, ‘Ms. sisters and natives of Fort Pierce, can recall their first encounter with the Hurston, how do you start a book?’

He was interested in writing his own book at the time. I was on staff with her at Lincoln Park Academy, but I was young. I really did enjoy talking to her during those Sunday dinners,” Benton remembers. Although, the Benton family was familiar with Hurston’s profession, the rest of the town wasn’t aware that there was a woman whose entire life was based on breaking through barriers and carving out a historical place that would haunt all of them until this day. After the death of her mother, Lucy Hurston at 14, young Zora worked various jobs. She had a hard time finishing high school and took on a job as maid for Gilbert & Sullivan, eventually singing. In 1917, at age 26, she found herself in Baltimore securing a way to access free public education by lying about her age to finish high school. Shaving 10 years off of her age, Hurston went on to graduate from Barnard College in 1928 as the first African-American female to do so. Her collegiate schooling included Howard University—where she pledged Zeta Phi Beta.

T he Harlem Renaissance

There are many stories that chronicle the author’s most successful period during the Harlem Renaissance, when acclaimed authors and the who’s who of Black arts and cultural ruled the literary scene. Hurston often entertained and hosted frequently at her residence, keeping company with fellow writers including singer and actress Ethel Waters. Hurston became close with Langston Hughes. Together, the two writers would start a newspaper, Fire!, but they eventually fell out over creative differences. Her bold and fiery personality never swayed from her convictions, creating critics and a handful of naysayers, including Hughes, along the way. Hurston’s works reflected a realism to a world that many first generation northern Blacks wanted to forget as they were trying to integrate into mainstream society, but Hurston saw things in different way. Growing up in one of the few allBlack towns, as a young adult, she often intermingled with Whites, sitting at the front of the bus, telling them her stories. She didn’t experience racism until she left and arrived in Jacksonville at 15. The Barnard College graduate took this ideology and approach with her as she traveled the world, where she crossed color lines. Her confidence illuminated swag and a seductiveness that was noticed when she would enter the room. That was one of the main things that stood out to the Fort Pierce town residents who had never seen anyone like Hurston, especially her students. continued on next page

Anthony Westbury, a former editor of the Fort Pierce/Port St. Lucie Tribune, describes her understanding best. “When you broke down segregation in the way that we broke it down in America, we destroyed some of the Black community in the process,” he says. “We forced things to happen that Zora suggested needed to T:6” way. In 1958, she first started teaching at Lincoln Park Academy. Marjorie Harrell and her classmates were greeted by the author’s presence. “My English language instructor, Mrs. Calhoun, was pregnant and on maternity leave and this lady came to substitute in her place,” says Harrell. “We didn’t know who she was, we just knew she was there to substitute. Nobody told us that she was famous, that she was a writer.” Despite Hurston earning a Bachelors Degree from Barnard College and studying at Morgan College and Harvard University, she was unable to acquire her teacher’s certification in the state of Florida. In 1959, she started to get sick and her demeanor rapidly changed – she wore big flowered dresses and big skirts. Harrell said there was an incident where the male students locked Hurston in the school closet as a prank. “If you just laughed at a teacher, by the time school ended everyone would hear about it. Had we known who she was, we would’ve understood her dramatics. Here is somebody who could have given us Black American History,” Harrell said. To the state education board, Hurston described Lincoln Park Academy students as the “worst” who carried knives and fought all of the time. But, this wasn’t the case at all. The moral laws of the land in Fort Pierce were held up by a village including then school Dean Robert Jefferson, who was known to carry a leather strap as his method of discipline and rule. “Our school motto was, ‘We do right because it’s right to do right,’” said former student, Attorney Margaret Benton. The likelihood at that time of students carrying on in that manner was near zero, but Hurston felt this may have sped up the process of becoming certified to teach, which wasn’t to be.

was formed in the early 1960s by Alfred Hair. These Fort Pierce teenagers studied painting from the famed artist and art teacher, A.E. “Bean” Backus – a White painter who captured the beautiful outdoor scenes of Florida’s nature. Headed up by Hair, they sold their mass production of paintings up and along the highway to tourists and natives for as little as $20 a painting. Over 50 years later, the Highwaymen is considered one of the most celebrated groups of Black painters that have carved out a place in American art history. They, too are recognized for their influence on the area’s historic blueprint, along with Hurston. The town’s mayor, Linda Johnson, is a native who has lived in other places, including Chicago working in the private sector. She decided to return to her hometown in the early 1990s and has held public office for the past 25 years as the town’s mayor. As you visit Fort Pierce, there is no doubt that Hurston has left her mark on the town, which once was divided by Avenue D – rarely integrating the Black residents with the White residents outside of servitude work. The Zora Neale Hurston Dust Tracks Heritage Trail takes one through the various landmarks – Zora Neale Hurston Library; the house that she lived in owned by the Benton family; Sarah’s Memorial Chapel; Lincoln Park Academy, and other Zora hangouts. The most highly visited location is the Genesee Memorial Gardens, now the Garden of Heavenly Rest, renamed when author Alice Walker marked Hurston’s grave with a headstone at Ave. S and 17th Street. The senior home where Hurston died still stands as a memorial where visitors can come see a recreation of the room she spent her last months in – from the old black typewriter, to pack of Camels that sit on the brown wooden desk, among other personal items that were saved when she died. As you visit and listen to the stories of the town’s natives, you realize that Hurston has had a profound impact that has forced many to open their eyes to those that they may have found unusual and obscure. She traveled the world as a renowned anthropologist, spending extensive time in Haiti and other parts of the Caribbean, and she was falsely accused of sexually assaulting a 10year old. In a time when there were no social media platforms to immediately use as a self-platform to dispel such falsehoods, the novelist returned to her Floridian roots. She was ahead of her time and began to ruffle more feathers as she publicly spoke against integration on the decision of Brown vs. The Board of Education in 1954. Hurston said, “The whole matter revolves around the self-respect of my people. How much satisfaction can I get from a court or-

ENTERTAINMENT Happy With The Present

Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer During this time of year, we find ourselves in the midst of award season for the talented, gifted and famous in all aspects of the entertainment, arts and film business. But, what the viewing audience doesn’t get to see behind the red carpet interviews, is the sweat, blood and river of tears that have kept many in close proximity of either a box of Kleenex or two steps away from an asylum. The kind of passion that drives actors, producers, songwriters, singers and musicians to the point of no return—revealing much of their soul to the world. Terisa Griffin has revealed more than her share of her soul to the public. As a singer and songwriter, she has had a 20-year challenging relationship with the music business. It’s a relationship that has taken her on some highs and some lows, but a relationship that has built a solid understanding. She recently released her latest CD, Revival of Soul right before the Christmas holiday, and it debuted on the Billboard Digital Charts. This will be her third full-length release on her indie label, My Naked Soul Productions. Griffin said, “I get this call from Billboard and I thought someone was pranking me, that it was a real person. I said, ‘Let me google this person and see if it was a real call.’ Maybe the prank is a good prank. I called the number and the guy said they were trying to call me to say, ‘Congratulations, you’ve charted on Billboard!’” Griffin had never charted on Billboard before so this was a good sign that she was on the right path. “Not bad for an indie. Definitely not bad for the industry that we’re in now – as an R&B indie, especially since I don’t rap. That was surreal, it felt good, which is why I made a choice to delve into my savings to produce this project.”

Terisa Griffin: New Music, New Passion, Renewed Strength

She is most proud of that bond that connects all of her sisters through their gift of song. Griffin admits that there is no comparison to what she’s shared with her family growing up in the church. “I can’t compare us to other families,” she says. “No other family went through what we went through. If they did, I don’t know their story. The most talented women I know, I was born with. It’s a shame that we haven’t shown this to the world together.” Her soulful range and eloquent gospel- infused voice was almost immediately the buzz around town a few months after she moved to Chicago from her hometown in the early 1990’s. Leaping out on faith and taking an exit from college, her pursuit for becoming a lawyer could not measure up to her passion for becoming a successful entertainer and musician. Me and my band – some of them have been with me for 18 years.” Many indie soul artists find refuge in the South as their music connects better with their audience and Griffin feels her new project is a deeper connection with her female fan base. The CD is about a revival of feelings, emotions, pain, hurt and healing. She explains her perspective, “This is a female CD because it’s written as a female. When Carole King wrote Natural Woman who was mad at her about it? “I know there are some males out there that can totally relate to this problem where people don’t love you back. You give your all and they become abusive, you’re trying to stop yourself from loving them, and you can’t. As result, it becomes a very hurtful situation. It really is how we handle those situations that define who we are.” The album takes you through the singer’s analogy of a woman’s struggle of finding herself with the current single, Save Me and the first single, Tonight is The Night right after. The songs on Revival of Soul are a reflection of Griffin’s songwriting depth and the ability to continue her story telling. In 2005, she released her first full-length CD, My Naked Soul, after the local buzz of Songbird, a five-song EP released in 1998 that featured her breathtaking rendition of A Song For You. The album spawned it’s strongest single, Wonderful, a sultry ballad that was eventually remixed and released as a house single by producer and DJ Terry Hunter on My Naked Soul as a bonus track and the UK record label Soul Heaven.

The breakout house music anthem introduced Griffin to an international audience, and she performed to new fans overseas. She released her sophomore album in 2011, Soulzephrenic, a collage of various critically acclaimed songs and musical influences that Griffin wrote and produced. “I’m happy at where I’m at right now,” she says. I don’t feel like I did it all for nothing. I’m proud of Revival of Soul. With Revival of Soul, I looked at my artistry in a different way. I looked at myself and said, ‘When you write, write for yourself for this CD and be as honest as possible. Don’t apologize for your honesty. Tell it like you feel it.’” With a loyal and strong fan base, Griffin’s followers are familiar with the singer’s ballsy, “shoot from the hip” approach, which gained her notoriety on NBC’s Season 3 of The Voice, when she was a contestant on Team Blake. It was an accomplishment that was well deserved but nerve wracking for the 40-something singer. She said the experience was not a road she wants to travel down again, but she doesn’t regret the exposure to millions of viewers and the friendships with other singers that she formed. After injuring her ankle backstage on the show set, she found herself in the emergency room with her family, suffering from a spiral fracture of the fibula. But “I would not hate the very thing that has taken care of me all of my life,” she said of the experience. “I won’t hate my artistry or the blessing that God has given me because I didn’t reach the pinnacle of my dream. That’s a part of life.” The setback has not slowed her down as she continued to build her non-profit organization, Better Love Yourself, which has recognized and assisted first-time college bound students with on-campus essentials and scholarships for the past 10 years. It has benefited over 2,000 students. Griffin, also a music department head at a Chicago alternative charter school, teaches young people the essentials of music theory. As a singer, songwriter, entertainer, philanthropist, teacher and burgeoning actress – she co-starred in the Hill Harper directed short film, The Truth in 2011 – Terisa Griffin has created a life of revivals—staying on her course to create music that resonates to her cultural roots and remaining positively independent and unapologetically unique. “We run from what is not acceptable,” Griffin says. “But its the uniqueness of who we are that makes us exceptional, that makes us creative, that makes us have the ability to make another human being cry and invoke feeling. “Music allowed me to get through the worse emotions. It allowed me to eliminate my pain so that I could continue to feel it.” www.chicagodefender.com

We’ve explained their extreme behaviors as, “That’s JuneBug being JuneBug; you know he’s so quick to fly off the handle,” or “JuneBug just got the blues; he in there sleeping. Been sleeping like that for two days now.” We’d just shake our heads and go on our way. Before Quintonio LeGrier was shot and killed by police, a 911 call had been made explaining that he was behaving unlike himself and seemed agitated. Philip Coleman was killed by over-zealous police who used excessive Taser shocks on him after Coleman was arrested and held in jail. His parents informed the police that something was not right with their son; that he needed to be taken to the hospital for mental examination. Both men were intelligent, one in his freshman year of college, the other a graduate of the University of Chicago.

Attending Henderson State University on a sports scholarship, Sanders soon changed his major to Communications and Journalism, earning a B.A. from the Arkansas school.

Defender Senior Staff Writer For the past 22 years, the voice and the face that many Chicagoans were greeted by when they started their day was the deep and welcoming presence of Hosea Sanders on their television screens. His introduction into the Chicago market in 1994 was a far change from the long-time anchormen that proceeded him at WLS-TV ABC-7. But Hosea’s good looks and his smooth approach to delivering the news brought a fresh wave of viewers to tune in to the 6 a.m. morning broadcast of he co-anchored with veteran journalist Linda Chu. Both Sanders and Chu have shifted to the evening broadcast at 7 p.m. on WCIU-TV Channel 26 now; it’s a media partnership that allows ABC-7 to provide news reports to WCIU’s viewers. A native of Arkadelphia, Arkansas, Sanders grew up in that modest town where his mom was a Vice Mayor for 21 years. Growing up in a household with four younger sisters and brothers, he loved to write from an early age. “One of the early Christmas gifts my parents gave me was a little cassette recorder,” Sanders recalled. “I would go around and interview every-

one. When I couldn’t find anyone to interview, I would make the voices up myself. “As a kid, I loved to write, but I didn’t think about it as a profession until I was in my senior year in high school. We all played football, and my

younger brother had been a running back. One evening, our team lost a game.” A local sportswriter blamed Sanders’ younger brother for the defeat and an upset Hosea wrote a letter to the editor expressing his frustration as he

protected his brother. The paper published his letter. Impressed by his strong writing skills and the power of his message, faculty members at the local university encouraged Sanders to consider a career in journalism.

He had an impressive beginning in the industry, starting out with an internship at small country music station, KMLA in Ashdown. He wore multiple hats – writing news stories, announcing sports and playing the music. Sanders says, “By the time of my graduation, I asked the boss if I could do everything. He let me do it. I did the morning show, with a country voice. In the afternoon, I did a middle of the road voice. When I did the news, I was all serious. I switched personalities. I was also answering the phone.” He moved to Little Rock, gaining his first television job at KARK-TV, then left his home state of Arkansas to accept the weekend anchor and reporter position at KDFW-TV in Dallas from 1981-86. As his career grew, Sanders landed in the number two market in the country, Los Angeles in 1986 where he served as the entertainment reporter at KCBSTV, covering the entertainment beat. continued on next page

PROFILE CONT. “They would also call me ‘Countdown’ because I had to come up with these specials. I would do a special before the Grammy Awards. It would be ‘Countdown to the Grammys,’ ‘Countdown to the Oscars.’ In one week, I talked to Vanessa Williams, Angela Bassett, Little Richard at his house, and all these famous people,” Sanders said. But he was itching for something more as he began to feel that all of the Hollywood stories were starting to sound and look the same. So Sanders took a leap out on faith when the offer came to join WLS ABC-7 in August 1994. “I was reluctant to come to Chicago,” he said. “When I walked into that newsroom, I had never seen that many Black people in my life in one newsroom. Everyone from producers to reporters. When I joined the station, there were five Black men on the air, including myself.” Sanders joined the esteemed roster of award winning journalists Russ Ewing, Harry Porterfield, Bob Petty and Charles Thomas. “It used to be back in the day, there was one and if there was someone already there, you better be

nervous. It was interchangeable – they would be like they have their ‘Black’ spot.” Sanders soon became comfortable with his new environment. “I said let me seriously consider this. This was a place I could succeed as a Black man and I could succeed as a prime anchor. That was one of the reasons they brought me here, to be a prime anchor man.” Sanders paired up with veteran co-anchor and reporter Linda Chu in the 4:30-7 a.m. primetime slot. Sanders became Chicago’s most reliable anchor to wake up to and built a fan base that has followed him for the past 20 years. In addition to his anchorman duties, he is also the host of the Emmy Award winning Heart and Soul TV show focusing on Chicago’s African-American community. He is proud to be a part of this kind of special programming that the station produces every season. “Even the name – it’s all good news,” Sanders says. “It’s celebrating good things that are happening in the community. Good people, doing good things. Just to sit and tell the stories, there’s not many places left like that anymore. There’s a home for that here.”

“Everybody wants to be heard. You don’t classify people, you don’t judge people, and nobody is better than anybody else.” T:10”

At a time, where people of color are often captured in soundbites associated with crime, violence and poverty, he feels “Heart and Soul” shuts these images down.

Listening Is Key “These types of quality shows – it’s not just thrown together. This is quality reporting with quality production. We look for uplifting things. Again, not being condescending, but being respectful for what people have done and overcome,” he said. Sanders credits the people in his life that have influenced him the most growing up – his family. He feels that the art of listening is the key to being a good journalist and the gift of telling other people’s story is the journey of being a ‘better’ journalist. “Give people a chance to be listened to; everybody wants to be heard,” Sanders says. “You don’t classify people, you don’t judge people, and nobody is better than anybody else.” Losing his father as he was coming up motivated him on his path to remain focused and appreciate his success. Growing

up, he said they didn’t have much – often shopping the Salvation Army and making the best of what they had – but they made a way. Sanders said, “That’s why I work hard. I promised my mom when my father died, that I would give her a better life than she had before. I’m able to take her places she has never gone. Give her experiences she’s never had.” As a veteran journalist, Sanders is also an ongoing mentor for young people and aspiring journalists – he works with the Chicago Public Schools Mentoring Program, NAACP, and Alpha Phi Alpha Big Brothers program. A proud member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, Sanders is recognized for multiple achievements and often volunteers for the North Lawndale Employment Network. What is the key to being a better person? He sighs and answers, “We can walk down the street and there’s five different stories. Something that someone is going through or something that someone is accused of that no one knows about. If someone believes them and believes in them, there’s hope.”

Sunset Baby, written by playwright Dominique Morisseau and directed by Ron OJ Parsons, opened January 21 to rave reviews and continues through April 10. This Timeline Theatre Company production is a timeless story that we’re all too familiar with. It captures where the personal and the political collide. Tough, independent, Black and female Nina, played by AnJi White, is the daughter of a political activist who has ended up a drug dealer and a scam artist embittered by the death of her mother and the imprisonment of her father, who long before her mother’s death left them for the Black liberation struggle. Named after singer Nina Simone, this Nina is at once colorful, direct and strong in her conviction to not be affected by her father’s desertion, when he suddenly returns and upsets the applecart. The action revolves around her father’s desire to acquire from his daughter a packet of love letters written to him by his late wife (and Nina’s mother) when he was in prison. Nina has the letters, hidden from her father and her lover, Damon (Kelvin Roston Jr.). Damon, the third side in this triangular conflict, is Nina’s partner in all kinds of crimes, although you get the sense that he, too, is dealing with the sins of his own parents, trying to stay strong while tending to his aching soul. Afrolatinos Historical Society The Afrolatinos Historical Society presents the African Legacy In The Americas: From Toussaint L’Ouverture, Alexandre Petion, and Simon Bolivar to Barack Obama. Opening Reception: Wednesday, February 24, from 5-8 p.m., Columbia College Chicago Library, 3rd floor, 624 South Michigan Avenue. For info, call 312/369-7900. The exhibition addresses one of the most intriguing questions posed on the social status and legal rights of people of African descent in Latin America and the USA during the 19th century. Although slavery was extremely cruel and brutal, people of African descent in Latin America could achieve greater social and political mobility, unlike their counterparts in the USA. In Latin America, the slave system was more open to freedom: physical cruelty was against the law and punishable; one could legally escape slavery; a freed slave could enjoy a legal status close to that of other citizens. They could even purchase a “whiteness certificate” (Gracias al sacar) and achieve privileges allowed only to white people. As a result, in the 19th century, they had an “acceptance” inconceivable in the USA of the same time. The exhibition showcases how these legal and social “possibilities” in the 19th century, allowed more than 30 people of African descent to become heads of state, presidents or dignitaries. Dr. Ana Vicky Castillo PhD, is an Afro-Colombian founder and CEO of Afrolatinos Historical Society, which seeks to reclaim the legacy, the impact, and the contributions of the African Diaspora. Dr. Castillo is also a research affiliate of the Institute for Migration and International Social Work of the Loyola University School of Social Work and an educator at the Chicago Public Schools. I didn’t fully appreciate the lifetime’s worth of inspiration my grandmother brought to my palate with the neighborhood dishes she had added to her collection, shared by her friends living near-by. I’ve written often about her international neighbors from Italy, Greece and Turkey in her Mobile, Alabama neighborhood, and yesterday when I was “modernizing” directions for the tomato mac-aroni and cheese dish my grandmother used to serve often, I realized it must have been adapted from her Italian neighbor. That’s when the thought came to me to replace cooked macaroni with oven-ready lasagna noo-dles along with prepared pasta sauce for the one Gran-

ny simmered for hours when she made what she had named Creole Italian pie long before Better Homes and Garden printed a more mainstream American version. This is not a dish to fret over, a feature I learned to appreciate long ago when earlier versions of this casual dish became a favorite with my son and his friends. Feel free to use your judgment when layering, especially if your pan is not the exact size. Baked slices will not be precise, but will cut more like lasagna with a little sauce spilling over the edges.

10 ounces (or more) ricotta cheese or cottage cheese 3 tablespoons to 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 3/4 pound ground beef 1 to 2 tablespoons Creole seasoning, see note

4 to 5 dried oven-ready lasagna flat noodles 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese 1 jar (10 ounces) tomato pasta sauce

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Stir the ricotta cheese and Parmesan together in a small bowl; set aside. Brown the beef in a cast iron skillet over medium heat; cook, stirring as needed, until no pink remains. Discard any excess fat. Stir in the pasta sauce and Creole seasoning. Raise heat to medium high. Cook, stirring, until mixture just begins to bubble. Lower heat to a simmer. Cook, stirring occasionally, about 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from heat; set aside. Ladle about 1 1/2 cup of the pasta meat sauce in the bottom of a deep-dish 9- to 10-inch ceramic pie pan that has been brushed with oil. Spread sauce over the bottom with the back of a wooden spoon. (Don’t worry if it doesn’t completely cover.) Top sauce with 2 pasta sheets, breaking one of the sheets for a better fit, if desired. Top pasta with dollops of the ricotta cheese and about 3/4 cup of mozzarella. Top with remaining pasta sheets, ricotta mixture and mozzarella. Add the remaining meat sauce to the top.

Bake until flavors come together, cheese melts and top begins to brown, about 35 to 40 minutes. Remove from oven. Cool on wire rack 15 minutes before cutting into slices to serve. Makes about 8 servings. Note: Use purchased Creole seasoning, or to make your own, combine 1 tablespoon sweet paprika, 2 teaspoons salt; 1 teaspoon each: dried thyme, dried oregano, garlic powder, onion powder and ground black pepper in a small bowl. Store remaining seasoning in an airtight container such as a small food storage bag or closed jar
