Andrea ZOPP: ur Choice for U.S. O Senator From Illinois

The game of politics can sometimes be a dirty and unapologetic place to play fair and nice. If ever there was a state where the “victor gets the spoils,” it is Illinois. Our state has produced two groundbreaking American presidents in Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama. To represent the current president’s home state in Congress or the Senate can come with some measurable perks in Washington, D.C., if not just bragging rights. The U.S. Senate primary race for the Democratic Party is an important one because it can pose a strong impetus to regaining dual-Democratic Senate representation in the U.S. Senate for Illinois. Currently, each party is represented by an incumbent, Republican Senator Mark Kirk and Senior Senator, Democrat Dick Durbin. In President Obama’s final year in office, this Senate race is closely being watched because the House is ruled by Republican leadership. Last Spring, Tammy Duckworth (8th Congressional District) announced that she was running for the Illinois U.S. Senate seat, challenging Senator Mark Kirk. It’s been four years since Kirk suffered a massive stroke that placed him on a tedious recovery while maintaining his Senate seat. Duckworth, the first Asian American elected to Congress, is also the first disabled female veteran – she was injured in 2004 during combat while serving in the Iraq War. She has become a staunch advocate for medical care for veterans. The speculation surrounding executive Andrea Zopp’s bid for Kirk’s Senate seat was confirmed when she stepped down in 2015 as president of the Chicago Urban League where she had served for five years. As the filing deadline approached, State Senator Napoleon Harris threw his hat in the arena for the Senate seat, which eliminated Zopp’s positioning as the sole African-American candidate. What does this mean for the Black community and people of color in general? The possibility of electing a Black U.S. Senator may have some challenges because this is a hotly contested race. All challengers are people from ethnic backgrounds and bring a unique perspective of experience that is relatable to various groups. The issue of relatability is important for most voters, followed by what their platform will be, and lastly, how much experience they have. The Chicago Defender extended an editorial roundtable invitation to all three Democratic candidates to discuss their platform, experience and real plans for Illinois residents in areas of high concern: jobs, public safety, healthcare, education and economic stimulation for businesses. Harris and Zopp accepted our invitation to meet with our editorial staff to discuss the importance of their commitment our residents. Congresswoman Duckworth was a “no show” in declining candidate debates or not addressing important issues that deal with people of color, criminal justice, public safety, police misconduct and the threat of key public universities and colleges closing their doors to thousands of students and jobs.

Napoleon Harris

With only a short time in office since 2013, serving as the Illinois State Senator in the 15th District, Harris has demonstrated a genuine compassion for the need for transparency in our political system. However, the experience and level of executive decisions required to build strong bridges in Washington, D.C. must entail a background that addresses the problems that are faced to push productive legislation in the criminal justice system, education-

So how are we doing? Unfortunately, Black women suffer from a bad rap, same as Black men.

OTHER CHARACTERISTICS Black women are the head of 29 percent of all Black households, which is more than twice the rate for all women at 13 percent. Only 33 percent of Black women who gave birth were married, which is almost the opposite for all women at 64 percent.

The stereotypes of the lazy welfare mom, street-corner hooker, crack addict, loudmouthed, crooked-neck shifting, and the easy lay fast-tail girl are the norm. Though we know that she is hardly the majority, let’s take a quick glance at what we look like statistically.

These additional responsibilities may also explain why Black women are slightly over-represented in the workforce compared to all women and even higher than Black men (67 percent).

According to official estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, the Black female population in the United States was 23.5 million in 2013. This is 52 percent of the total Black population compared to Black males, who make up 48 percent of the Black population. Compared to all females in America, Black females are on average younger at 35 years old compared to the average age of all females at 39 years old. Black female children under 18 years old are at the same percentage as all female children at 49 percent. The percent of the population that is female increases much quicker for the Black population as they get older, due to a higher mortality rate of Black men. But this is in the context that women of all races and ethnicities have a longer lifespan than men and make up a larger percentage of that sub-group’s population as time passes.

EDUCATION In 2013, about 57 percent of Black women 25 and older attended college, although only 31 percent have completed at least an associates degree, compared to 60 percent of all women who attended college, of whom 39 percent completed a degree. Black women have been more successful than Black men in closing the gap when it comes to college degrees. About 22 percent of Black women have a bachelor’s degree compared to 30 percent of all women. Also, the number of Black women who finished high school but did not pursue higher education is about the same as it is for all women – 27 percent compared to 28 percent respectively. www.chicagodefender.com

Even though Black women are over-represented in the workforce they still have a higher unemployment rate than ‘all women at 10 percent versus six percent respectively.

Beautiful Bride Gabrielle Union Wade

African-American

Women Status Update The percent of Black women who have an associate’s degree (nine percent) is equal to that of all women in America. Only 15 percent of Black women over 25 did not complete high school, which is only slightly higher than all women at 13 percent.

EMPLOYMENT African American females aged 16 to 64 had a higher participation rate in the labor force at 71 percent, compared to all females at 69 percent. Labor force participation refers to the percent of women who were either working or looking for work. Women not in the labor force include those who may be full time students, disabled, and others who are not looking or gave up looking for employment for other reasons. The 36 percent of African-American women who worked full time all year in 2013 had median earnings of $33,780, compared to $38,097 for all women.

“While an overwhelming percentage of Black women are married to Black men (94 percent), only about 86 percent of Black men are married to Black women.

Of Black females aged 16 to 64, 25 percent had no earnings in 2013, compared to the 26 percent with no earnings of all females in the same age group. Also, a larger percentage of Black females 16 to 64 were unemployed than all females (at 9.6 percent compared to 5.8 percent), and were living below the poverty level (29 percent) than all females (17 percent). Compared to all women in the United States, Black women who worked were less likely to work in occupations that may be considered white collar and were much more likely to hold service jobs. Only 64 percent of working Black women held white-collar jobs, compared to 72 percent of all women. White-collar occupations include jobs in management, business, computers, office, legal, education, etc. Blue-collar occupations include employment in construction, maintenance and repair, installation, production, transportation, etc.

All of these factors help explain the higher poverty rate for Black women (29 percent) than all women at 17 percent.

RELATIONSHIPS The percentages of Black women who are married and who have never been married are almost the exact opposite of those percentages for all women in America. Although 48 percent of Black women have never been married, 46 percent of all women are currently married. Only 26 percent of Black women are currently married, while only 30 percent of all women in America have never been married. Black women are also less likely to be separated from their spouses (five percent) compared to all women at nine percent, but are much more likely to be divorced (13 percent) compared to three percent of all women. But Black women are still less likely to be married than Black men. As a matter of fact, there are about 364,000 more Black men who are married than Black women, even though Black women are 51 percent of the Black population. While an overwhelming percentage of Black women are married to Black men (94 percent), only about 86 percent of Black men are married to Black women.

POLITICS Robert T. Starks Defender Contributing Writer

On the eve of the announcement of massive layoffs and a worsening financial situation, Chicago State University (CSU) students welcomed Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders to CSU’s Emile and Patricia A. Jones Convocation Center on Thursday evening, February 24th. Sanders entered the room to the cheers of more than 7,000 attendees. CSU students were ecstatic when one of their cohorts kicked off the program with a welcome and a passionate, detailed litany of the financial problems that face them. This student was followed by state legislators and the mayor of Urbana, all of whom highlighted the need for the governor and the state legislature to break the deadlock in Springfield and fund the university. The audience roared in approval after each speaker’s plea for funding for CSU and all of the public colleges and universities throughout the state. Underlying these cheers was the fact that the great majority of the audience was made up of White people, 30 years and under, from most of the Chicago metropolitan area colleges, both public and private. We are reminded of the fact that MAP (Monetary Award Program) grants are given to Illinois students who can demonstrate financial need at public and private schools. Thus, students from all over the area were excited to have their demands for financial support aired on such a grand stage and echoed by a presidential candidate. Added to the drama of the evening was the appearance of Ja’Mal Green, who is the spokesman and leader of the youth movement that is seeking the resignation of Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the ouster

of Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez. Following Mr. Green’s passionate plea for justice in the Laquan McDonald case and the need for financial aid for CSU, came Cook County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, a Sanders delegate to the Democratic Convention. Upon ascending to the stage, Chuy was given a roaring two-minute ovation before he introduced CSU Business School Professor Johnathan Jackson. Both speakers made strong statements for the restoration of funding for CSU and the other schools in the state to the loud cheers of the students. In his introduction of Bernie Sanders, Jackson emphasized the fact that Bernie Sanders endorsed his father, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr., for president in 1984 and ’88. “I am happy to be here to support and introduce Bernie Sanders because he is not a politician, but a statesman. He joined the Civil Rights Movement while he was a student at the University of Chicago, and

was arrested in a demonstration. “In 1963, he joined the March on Washington. He supports a plan for free health care for all, and he supports free college for all, a living wage for all workers and making sure that Wall Street companies pay their share of taxes.” Thunderous applause greeted Bernie Sanders as he came to the stage, and the ovation lasted almost three minutes. Sanders proceeded to admonish police departments by asking the question, “How does it happen that unarmed African Americans are being shot and killed by police departments?” He went on to outline his differences with Hillary Clinton and to highlight the need for the reform of what he called a “broken criminal justice system.” Acknowledging where he was and the serious financial condition of CSU, he asked, “Where are our priorities?” While emphasizing his plans for free tuition to public colleges and universities, Sanders

received the most enthusiastic cheers. Student leader Charles Preston was joined in the support of Bernie’s platform by several students from other schools around the area and other young people. When the Chicago Defender asked these young people why they were supporting Bernie Sanders and not Hillary Clinton, they responded enthusiastically, “Of the two candidates, Bernie makes the most sense. Bernie can win. He can beat Trump. “Bernie is supported by thousands of young people. While Hillary is best known by the older people, Bernie is the hero of the young because of his progressive stance on the issues that we care about,” said Erik Harris, a 34-year-old independent filmmaker. Erica Nanton, 29, a senior at Roosevelt University, gave a thoughtful reason for her support for Bernie: “Because this is the information generation, we live in close communication with each other through social media and we are fully informed of the issues. “We are not disillusioned by the hype. We are upset by the fact that U. S. marshals are arresting young people who owe money for student loans. “We do not want another group of young people having to suffer the burden of outrageous loans for an education like we are now experiencing. Besides, there is a political revolution going on in this country and it is being led by Bernie. We are a part of this revolution!” Because of the presence of the national press at the rally, the students, faculty, and administrators at CSU feel that they have aired the financial plight of their university and the rest of the schools throughout the state to the nation. CSU students have vowed that their story will go viral because of their use of social media. These students are, after all, members of the information generation. The CSU story has now gone national!

Why We MUST Vote! More than ever our participation in the electoral system is of utmost importance. We have to look at what our predecessors went through and why they fought so hard to provide us the right to vote. We must consider what Malcolm X meant in his speech, “The Ballot or the Bullet.” If we reflect upon how the segregationist murders in conjunction with Black protest affected federal passage of voting-rights policies, we can better understand why Whites fought equally hard to prevent our right to vote. Voting symbolically states that Blacks are human and equal to Whites, giving us a legitimate say in the governing arm of the United States. In the view of Whites, it was all about the Benjamins, as our brothas would say. Opportunity is directly connected to economics. Listing Blacks as 3/5th man (in the Constitution) justified slavery, which justified the free labor slavery supplied, which increased the wealth of slave owners. The end of slavery did not create opportunities for social economic advancement for Blacks as long as Whites continued business as usual by denying

equality in education and economic opportunity. Slavery was directly connected to economics and economics is directly connected to skills. Denial of access to education and skills, in turn, prevented and stopped social economic advancement of Blacks. But Blacks had already embraced the connection of education – the ability to read, write, add, subtract and critically think – to freedom. They imparted that knowledge from generation to generation and were not to be stopped. They protested, boycotted, marched and withstood the barrage of terrorism targeted at them.

ditional nature of violence’s effects is attributable to the changing nature of the audience. Today we’re witnessing terrorism upon Blacks by police departments throughout the country. The violence brought about by segregationists, though it in and

housing, education, employment and other social opportunities that can advance one’s life. This is very important to understand because some believe that voting won’t change the racism that is intricately woven within the system. If this is so, why do we vote?

T he Whole World Watched It was only after the whole world was watching the police use fire hoses with extreme force against peaceful demonstrators, siccing dogs on them, beating them with billy clubs, knocking them to the ground and then kicking and beating them, that President Lyndon B. Johnson knew that he had to get off the pot or … and so he got off the pot. Prior to the Johnson administration, federal response to the White terrorism of inflicting violence upon Blacks was diminished because the federal government left such matters to the states. The federal government wanted to remain in good standing with its governors and state elected officials, primarily the U.S. Congress, whose members it was highly dependent upon. From the 1930s through the end of President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s administration, the states ruled as independent sovereignties. Reluctantly, but under pressure like President Abe Lincoln was, President Lyndon B. Johnson moved to pass the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965, a federal government response stimulated by the violence against Black protests. Here we are 51 years later, fighting a similar fight. It’s always about equality and opportunity. I suggest that historically the con-

Blacks had long fought for the right to vote because it was the ultimate participation in America. By voting, one gets to effect legislation, effect change and make a difference in the world in which they live and work by choosing a candidate that will represent their interests. Yet we find ourselves still facing inequality and disparity in

Malcolm’s Speech On April 4, 1964 (52 years ago) Malcolm X, who had left the Nation of Islam, delivered his speech, “The Ballot or the Bullet.” During its delivery, he defined himself as a nationalist freedom fighter. Malcolm said that to be a Black nationalist requires re-education so that we learn to understand that what we choose, we do so for the betterment of the community. He suggested that we research and familiarize ourselves with those running for office, know the candidates’ track record, their

voting record, and what they’ve done to advance the Black race so that when you go to vote, you vote for those who look out for the interests of Blacks. He also spoke of the importance of owning and operating businesses in our communities to control our own economy in our communities. Healthy communities are communities within which you can live and shop. Blacks have been marginalized in a way that hinders the growth and development of our communities. We allow others to set up business in our communities and we also spend our money in communities outside of our own. The majority of our money goes to fund people outside of our communities, making them richer and ourselves poorer. Consequently, our communities break down and become slums and ghettoes. Malcolm said, “They hang (kill) us because we’re Black” and that “Blacks are suffering political oppression, economic exploitation and social degradation.” Bottom line, Malcolm was talking about change: “We need a self-help program, a self-help philosophy,” he said. “Once you change your philosophy, it changes your thought pattern. Once you change your thought pattern, you change your attitude, and once you change your attitude, you change your behavior.” We have to change our current behavior of pessimism and community suicide. By not voting, we fail to give voice to our interests. Failing to vote denies our imprint upon the social, political and economic landscape and renders us invisible. Participation in the electoral process is directly tied to economics and that’s the connection we have to make. If we’re to ever be self-determined, then let us begin with a self-help philosophy that leads to a behavioral change that will in the long term transform our social, political and economic standing in the world. The ballot and the bullet are actually one and the same fights, on different playing fields. Vote March 15! www.chicagodefender.com

We’ve seen that, for instance, in Laquan McDonald’s case.” Foxx says, “We have to stop focusing all of our attention on once they become adults and oftentimes almost irrevocably broken and start working on prevention on the front end.”

Fixing Juvenile Justice

She said one of her first priorities would be revitalizing the juvenile justice bureau; and calling to attention the impact it has particularly on communities of color. She said eight out of 10 kids are African American there. Foxx added, “What’s been lacking is a real open conversation about racism in the criminal justice system. We have to have that conversation. You do not see Blacks and whites prosecuted for drugs in the same way. That’s just real. There’s data. “People talk about the racial components of it like it’s a paranoia theory when there is actually data. The problem is that the current State’s Attorney does not believe in transparency.” Foxx says, “The way you get to deal with institutional racism is by opening up the books and looking at how you treat everybody so that it’s not anecdotal. Let’s just look at the books.” Foxx said she is committed to addressing the racial disparities in the criminal justice system. The Chicago Defender agrees with Foxx when she says, “For the State’s Attorney’s Office to have that much power, they’re the least transparent of any other stakeholders.” We also note that her opponents’ failure to admit that we have a problem gives us a good indication of what they plan to do about it. Nothing! Foxx contends that accountability from the community needs to be at the top of the list for institutions from schools to the State’s Attorney’s office that have such a huge impact on the future of our youth and our communities. For too long, Foxx says, “The public has accepted that those kids are the kids that get in trouble, without holding accountable those who contributed to how they got there in the first place. “So the question is, how to we get them back into the fold and how do we prevent them from getting there?” she says. One of the accomplishments she is most proud of is that before leaving Toni Preckwinkle’s administration, she went to Springfield and posted an amendment to the Automatic Transfer law where at the age of 15, if you commit certain offenses, you are tried as an adult no matter what and it is solely based on what the prosecutor charges you with.

“So if the State’s Attorney charges you with armed robbery, that’s an automatic transfer; if the State’s Attorney charges you with regular robbery, then you are charged as a juvenile. If you’re charged with aggravated robbery, you fall within the juvenile jurisdiction. “Why is that significant? Because all of the power in deciding where you go lies with the State’s Attorney’s Office.” But she explained that legislation is passed now “where we will see a 70 percent reduction in such cases. Going forward, armed robbery is one of those offenses that you cannot be tried for as an adult. Murder, aggravated battery with a fire-

arm, and aggravated criminal sexual assault.” Foxx says she’s open to direct interaction with the community – including town hall meetings, forums and open dialog; partnerships with community organizations and otherwise. “I can’t do this work from the office,” she said. “The creditability of the criminal justice system has been destroyed, as has the creditability of this office alone. A new beginning is required.” Foxx says, “The depth of my perspective makes me uniquely qualified to take this role in a way that we’ve never done it in the State’s Attorney’s Office here in Cook County.”

Already underfunded by the state moreso than other Illinois public institutions of higher learning, Chicago State University resultingly has been hit harder faster by the state budge impasse than other schools.

To get through the semester and have the current crop of students graduate may also symbolically mean, “passing the hat.” Wogan explains, “It might be that we’re working to complete this semester in the absence of payroll toward the end of the semester. That’s a possibility and that’s a conversation that has been had with our employees, faculty, etc.

Since the beginning of 2016, more and more ominous whisperings have grown louder and louder about CSU’s impending doom, with the tipping point predicted to come in March when it is believed that the school essentially will run out of money, forcing something to have to give. Approaching nine months into the budget stalemate and without having received any state appropriations that make up 30 percent of CSU’s funding since July 2015, that has turned out to be a pretty accurate forecast. On February 24, CSU announced that the school will forego Spring Break this year and even end the semester early to try to deliver degrees before it runs out of money. CSU President Thomas Calhoun confirmed that the school is fast-tracking the semester and canceling Spring Break, which was scheduled for March 14-19. Graduation has also been moved up to April 28 from May 12. Since CSU does not receive equal state funding of other Illinois colleges and the state funding it does get comprises 30 percent of its budget, the school is particularly hard hit because it does not have the monetary reserves of other Illinois colleges, and those meager reserves are expected to run out at the end of March.

“We don’t know. We’re not telling anybody this is definitely what’s going to happen because really it’s a fluid situation we’re working through. No one’s ever done this before.”

Of course, like everyone’s who’s ever suffered the painful loss of income from their primary or only revenue source, CSU is also actively searching for more outside money to avoid being caught in this situation again.

“We’re looking under every stone,” said Wogan, “because when 30 percent of your funding – about $38 million – is coming from the state and that money just never appears, obviously that creates a pretty big fiscal hole and that’s what we’re trying to manage “and it gives the administration right now.” some flexibility in terms of how All Over The MAP they manage this problem.” To compound the problem, Wogan says that CSU is trying to take on challenges one at CSU isn’t receiving any money a time, with the first challenge to for its students who receive MAP grants from the state either. Most people that have IRS problems haven’t filed in a few years. It’s a common problem. You are not alone. Don’t be embarrassed. Nearly 10 million people have delinquent tax returns. In all my years of practicing before the IRS, I’ve seen people that had a rough patch in their life that kept them from filing and paying their taxes. IRS problems happen to good people. Someone gets sick and they can’t work, someone loses their job. It’s terrible. There’s no money to pay the taxes one year so they don’t file, and the person is afraid to file after that. They don’t want to get caught and they certainly don’t want to end up in jail. But worse than not paying your taxes is not filing your return – it’s against the law. You may be asking, “Is there anything I can do to get my life back”? Yes there is! You can get your life back. First you have to decide that you want your life back. You have to decide that you aren’t going to take this anymore and that you want to fix it. Once you make the decision that you want help, and you no longer want to live in fear, or hide from those dreaded IRS notices, phone calls and visits, you will have taken the biggest step in getting your life back on track. Don’t let the IRS bully you into hiding under a rock, in the closet, or under your blankets. There are many options and ways to get your life back and even better yet, there’s a way to protect your savings and your paycheck, a way for you to keep your car!

The laws have changed over the years and there are laws to protect taxpayers nowadays. Years ago you were just at the mercy of the IRS. But now you have a chance to get your life back. You could opt to represent yourself before the IRS. There is the offer-in-compromise program. Some people do go that route. But representing yourself before the IRS is like going to court without a lawyer. I wouldn’t recommend that. Or, you can hire someone that knows all the ins-and-outs and navigates the IRS maze on a daily basis. You can hire someone who knows how to protect you and your rights. Once you take that first big step and decide you are done with sleepless nights, you need to make the second biggest decision – finding a competent professional who cares about you and is an expert at taking on the IRS. There are new laws that have gone into effect to help financially strapped taxpayers today. The IRS announced their “Fresh Start Initiative,” which allows more taxpayers than ever before to settle up with the agency. Now is the time to take advantage of these less-stringent, more flexible programs before the IRS changes its mind again. Remember that for every tax problem, there is a solution. (Constant W. Representative Christian Mitchell, was sworn into office in January 2013. The 26th District is comprised of portions of Streeterville, parts of the Loop, Oakland, Grand Boulevard, Kenwood, Hyde Park, South Shore and South Chicago.

5th District Ken Dunkin Representing the 5th District, which stretches from the Gold Coast on the North Side to South Shore on the South Side, State Representative Ken Dunkin has served a diverse constituency since 2002. A Democrat that isn’t afraid to be independent when necessary, Duncan with the support of other Black legislators helped restore upwards to two billion dollars in budget cuts to child care, homecare workers and senior subsidies.

Mitchell sponsored the “Fund Education First” bill which would provide an additional $200 million to CPS immediately and over $1 billion in long-term relief, and it would do so without increasing property taxes.

ENTERTAINMENT Mary L. Datcher Arts & Entertainment Editor When you talk about the gospel and soul music era of the 1960s and 1970s, there is no way that you can leave out Chicago’s very own Staples Singers. Headed by the masterful leadership of Roebuck “Pops” Staples, he and his children – Cleotha, Pervis, Yvonne and Mavis – began singing gospel spirituals in their Chicago living room. Throughout the years, the Staple Singers have broken various barriers through their harmonic vocal arrangements, social awareness, style and grace. The signature voice of its youngest member, Mavis Staples, has become one of the most recognizable voices on the international music scene. HBO Documentary Films debuted MAVIS! meatpacking factory in Chicago. His earlier roots of learning how to play the guitar in the deep Delta fields of Mississippi brought a unique approach of combining what he learned from bluesman Charley Patton and his love for gospel spirituals. For a while, Pops was a member of the Chicago gospel quartet the Trumpet Jubilees, but after years of a standstill career with them, he left. One day, he came home from work, removed his guitar from the closet and gathered the children to teach them some spiritual songs. He knew he had something and decided to recruit his children as his new bandmates. Mavis, the youngest in the group, soon became the lead vocalist with her distinctive voice sounding way older than her young years. The documentary MAVIS! chronicles the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Grammy Award-winning singer’s beginning with rare archival footage, recordings, behind-thescenes video and conversations with friends and collaborators. Mavis says of the film, “You’re going to see my family’s life starting in 1950 and bringing it on up to now. You’ll see my father teaching us songs when we first started singing. “You’ll see a lot of my friends there – Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, saying nice things about me. It’s just the life – the life of the Staples family. “I tried to watch it in Austin, Texas,” Mavis continued. “I had a chance to see it, but I only saw half of it because I cried most of the way through it. Just to see Pops as a young man and to see us on our journey just brought tears to my eyes.” Adding testimonials to the film are musicians and family friends Gene Barge, Bonnie Raitt, Chuck D, Al Bell, Jeff Tweedy and late civil rights activist Julian Bond.

What Sets Her Apart Director and producer Jessica Edwards she said the making this documentary was a true labor of love. “Mavis herself was an inspiration. She’s such a vivacious and inspiring person,” Edwards said. “I wanted to know everything I could about her and couldn’t believe there wasn’t a film about her yet.

“My parents had Stax-era Staples music. I was reintroduced to her music through Jeff Tweedy – You’re Not Alone, One True Vine. I saw her perform for the first time and that’s when I got the bug. I think other iconic singers stick to one genre – they either do R&B or gospel music. Mavis does gospel, folk, soul, R&B, and now she does Americana music. To be that relevant and vital for 65 years, that’s what sets her apart.” Having recently won her first Grammy for Best American Roots Performance for the song See That My Grave Is Kept Clean, the 76-year old continues to drive full-steam ahead. She recently released her new album, Livin’ On A High Note, in conjunction with the film’s HBO debut. The film focuses on the close relationship with Mavis and her sister Yvonne, a life-long bond that carries onto the stage between the spiritual twins and confidants. The two rarely travel apart and the impact of Pops Staple resonates throughout the film. Mavis recalls her earlier musical influences and the bond between the Staples and (Aretha) Franklin families. Often they would go on the road and open up for Reverend C.L. Franklin for various gospel shows. “Growing up, my idol was Sister Mahalia Jackson,” Mavis says. “With the Franklin family – we called ourselves one big happy family – Aretha, Erma, Carolyn and their father. Aretha was dynamite herself as a young lady. I think we took Aretha and her father on the road back in the day.” She laughs a bit as she remembers those days past. “We took her down in Little Rock and she was crazy. She would do some things – she went to the beauty shop down in Little Rock and came back with green hair. Now, they’re wearing that today. They’re wearing all different kind of colors. “But, Rev. Franklin said, ‘Aretha, you go back there and get your color back’ Why would you get your hair green?’ She said, ‘That is the color of money.’” Staples bursts into laughter. “Our sister and I took our vacation over to Detroit and we stayed with Aretha and family,” Mavis continued. “This was years ago; we just had fun together. We grew up together – we were two families that were one family. The Franklins and the Staples.” With so many strong, foot-stomping classics such as I’ll Take You There and Respect Yourself, the film MAVIS! also touches upon earlier signature Staples songs, including a Dr. Martin Luther King favorite, Why? (Am I Treated So Bad) and Mavis’ remake of Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ In The Wind. The film also follows the group’s transition from Chicago label Vee-Jay Records to the infamous Memphis based Stax Records, to Mavis’ resurgence in the 1980s with Prince’s Paisley Park Records, and currently her present label home, Chicago based ANTI Records. The film is not only a walk down memory lane – MAVIS! is a testament of Black history preservation at its finest.

LOCAL NEWS Andre Carter Defender Contributing Writer More than 40 Black clergy members from throughout the Chicago area convened Monday to throw their support behind Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton. “At least 25 were expected,” said Clinton Illinois spokesperson Delmarie Cobb of the crowd of ministers who exceeded expectations as they filled a conference room of the Chicago Lake Shore Hotel in Hyde Park. The ministers were joined by former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, a long-time Hillary Clinton supporter who is acting as her surrogate on stops around the country in the campaign. One of the architects of the ministerial endorsement group was Rev. Leslie Sanders, who actually met with the campaign when they had clergy from all over the country meet in Philly last month, according to Cobb. “He was one of them. After that meeting he came back here and he wanted to do this,” she said, adding that a core group of about five ministers worked on pulling the endorsement together. One of that core group, Rev. Ira Acree, explained his endorsement by saying, “Nobody has better attributes and credentials than Hillary because of her stellar track record. Yale attorney, First Lady of Arkansas, First Lady of the USA, a U.S. Senator, and a Secretary of State. “But there’s also the policies she supports: she has committed to reforming the criminal justice system and that means a lot to us because our sons and grandsons are the ones populating these jails all across the country. “She’s the one who has committed to reforming and reducing mass incarceration of Black men – that’s enough to excite our community. “She’s also interested in investing $50 billion in the creation of jobs and building the infrastructure of metropolitan cities across America and that’s going to bring jobs into our community. That’s enough to excite me, because if jobs come in, violence will go out. “There are a lot of reasons the violence in Chicago is so high, but if we’re really going to attack violence, we need leaders who are going to invest in the economy, so I’m glad to lend my support to her.” Delmarie Cobb added that when Clinton visited a Bronzeville crowd at the Parkway Ballroom recently, “It was a really good rally and I think she touched on all the issues that are important to African Americans in terms of income inequality, affordable college, the schools to prison pipeline, the criminal justice www.chicagodefender.com

Some 40 Black clergy members from churches throughout Cook County threw their support behind presidential candidate Hillary Clinton at the Chicago Lake Shore Hotel on Monday. The ministers were joined by former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter (C), who accepted the endorsement on behalf of Clinton. Rev. Ira Acree (left of Nutter), Rev. Walter Turner (left of Acree), Bishop Tavis Grant (right of Nutter) and Rev. Leslie Sanders were the core group who organized the ministerial endorsement.

Chicago Area Black Ministers Endorse Hillary system – all of those things that are important to us.” The endorsing ministers cited Clinton’s long-time, well-known commitment to health care, which they called “so important in our communities,” and applauded her statements that she will support and build upon the provisions of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. Because of that, Rev. Walter Turner said, “It’s about more than an individual; it’s about sustainability,” which is why he is giving his support to the candidate who has said she will continue President Barack Obama’s legacy. “We stand to lose a lot in this election,” Turner added. Iconic local leader Rev. Dr. Leon Finney mused that, “Hillary won’t be judged by winning over Bernie Sanders; she’ll be judged by how well she did in Illinois in comparison to Barack Obama. “It was out of Illinois that the movement was built for Barack Obama to win his presidency and from Illinois we were able to pinpoint other states close by – we took Indiana by 28,000 votes; never happened since Lyndon Baines Johnson – and we picked up other states. “So this is a crucial election and it is crucial for a large turnout here in Illinois to send a message and to send Hillary Clinton on her way across the country.”

“She’s the one who has committed to reforming and reducing mass incarceration of Black men – that’s enough to excite our community.”

A poll by the Paul Simon Policy Institute at Southern Illinois last week noted that Clinton holds a commanding 19-point lead over Sanders in the state, which grows to 23 percent in Chicago. “Illinois is a battleground this time and we’re very excited about the fact that we’re going to make a statement on March 15,” said Cobb,

who insists that Clinton will do well in the November general election if the Republican nominee is Donald Trump. “Once you have the contrast between Trump and Hillary in a oneon-one, then people will see that it’s serious. It can’t be about playing the dozens and all the other circus stuff that is going on on the Republican side right now. People will see that it really has to be about the issues and who can move this country forward.” The ministers at the press conference who endorsed Clinton added that they will convene this Thursday at noon in front of Trump Tower at 401 North Wabash to protest Trump’s offensive handling of former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard David Duke’s endorsement of him over the weekend. Bishop Tavis Grant said, “This protest is not political, it’s moral. You cannot insult a whole class of people with over 50 years of history from lynchings to murders that still have not been adjudicated – this is not the kind of thing we can sit on the sidelines and comment on Facebook about. We have to come out and make a statement. “Our position ought to be, ‘You can’t be our president.’ His politics are the closest that this generation has come to George Wallace. George Wallace ran on anger and fear. Donald Trump has built his campaign on anger and fear. “We can’t mess around and allow this to become a cancer that we can’t get rid of because there’s no chemo that can wipe it out. At the end of the day, we have an insult level, we have a nerve and we have a dignity that we’re just not going to allow to be hijacked by anybody.”

uge Voter Turnout H Needed Finney believes a huge voter turnout is critical to doing that and that early voting is a key to that big turnout. Therefore, he has committed his church and community organization to getting 500 people to vote early this Saturday. “Then we’re going to bring people Monday and Tuesday and vote early again,” Finney said. Cobb believes it’s possible the Illinois primary can deal a knockout blow to candidate Bernie Sanders’ chances to win the Democratic nomination. “In many ways we’re estimating that the delegate count will be weighed in her favor with Illinois, so Illinois is in play, which often we are not because we’re late in the process,” said Cobb. The church is not only a sanctuary connecting us with our spiritual faith – in the African-American community, it is also a breeding ground for some of our best vocalists and musicians. There is no other institution that can compete with the number of extraordinary talents that our churches have released into the world. Whether you began with the basics of singing gospel and spiritual hymns and became a successful hip hop lyricist, the foundation of faith is present in the music. In 2002, we were introduced to the voice of Tweet that graced our urban contemporary radio airwaves stemming from her church upbringing. Her song, Oops (Oh My), was one of the most played songs of that year, racing up the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart to No.1 and peaking on the Billboard 100 at No. 7. Tweet’s debut album Southern Hummingbird was the singer’s first solo effort, produced by platinum producers Missy Elliott and Timbaland. Although it was her first major label release as a solo artist, it wasn’t her first introduction to the music business. Before she adopted her stage name – Tweet, Charlene Keys grew up in Rochester, New York. Raised in a family that was strongly rooted in the church, she and her siblings were encouraged to participate in music and play various musical instruments – Tweet’s instrument was her voice. Inspired by her love for gospel and soul music, Keys attended Rochester’s School of the Arts. At age 19, after the birth of her daughter, Tashawna, Tweet was challenged with the opportunity to join a new female group, Sugah, formed by Jodeci founder Devante.

Tweet Finds Growth In The Music With the blessing of her parents, she packed up and moved to Virginia Beach to work with the group – meeting young artists Ginuwine, Magoo, Playa, Missy and Timbaland. After the group dismantled, the relationship that was formed during that time would eventually lead to her record deal with Elektra Records and the release of Southern Hummingbird. Tweet’s vocal style was unique – strong but subtle and her lyrics dripped with painful honesty. With the success of Southern Hummingbird, fans wanted more. In 2005, her second album, It’s Me Again was released, much to her fan’s anticipation, but different variables played a role in the album’s shortened success. Over the course of the next 10 years, Tweet went through a roller coaster of musical collaborations. However, she gradually began to post unreleased music from her recording sessions of It’s Me Again and Love, Tweet on Soundcloud. It was an ingenious way of staying in touch with her fans and led the way to her EP Simply Tweet in 2013.

“I didn’t know if I really wanted to do this music anymore so I stayed away.” Her third full-length album, self-titled Charlene, just dropped on February 26 on eOne Music Group, spawning the lead singles Won’t Hurt Me and Magic. She says this project is different from previous albums.

Back To Her Roots “I’m really not focused on trying to be hot or trying to compete with what’s hot right now,” Tweet said. “I’m just putting out music that I love. I’m giving everybody an opportunity to love it or don’t. My thing is, I’m

comfortable with who I am. The difference between Southern Hummingbird and Charlene is that I’ve matured. “I’m grown and I know what type of artist I am, so I’m not going to sway anymore. I think that I swayed on the second album – it was a great album, but I compromised myself a little bit. Right now, where I am as a woman and as an artist, I’m comfortable with that.” Like other R&B artists who have found themselves challenged with staying true to their art form, Tweet’s musical roots to the church was important to her in bringing back true soul to her music. “This project is full of soul,” she says. “It felt like I needed to put stronger soul back into the music. Not that I’m the savior of the music, but I felt like it was missing. The emotions and the musicianship. That’s what I feel like I wanted to bring back into the album.” Her friend and producer, Charlie Bereal, produced the first song she co-wrote, I Was Created, and it hit home for Tweet, who was at the time questioning

her situation in the music business. “It just touched my heart because it was my testimony,” she says. “I didn’t know if I really wanted to do this music anymore so I stayed away. This song will hopefully inspire people to just walk in their moment with whoever God created them to be. That’s what this song means to me and I want to just inspire the world.” Don’t worry Tweet fans, although the album is spiritually inspired, it still keeps true to its secular dialogue. This is what makes Charlene genuine Tweet – the purity of the lyrical content. “The song the Hardest Thing” is about sometimes in life, we hold onto the things that aren’t good for us. The struggle. I think everything for me just needed to have a little soul and still have those Tweet lyrics, where you really know what I’ve been through in my life with love, love lost, new love and all of that. That was my focus for this album.” As Tweet gears up to hit the road to push Charlene, she doesn’t forget the people close to her that really inspired her to not give up her craft. There was the spiritual guidance of Bishop Thomas Weeks III, her long-time assistant and friend Quinten Bond, Missy Elliott, and close friends and family members. The one person who has encouraged her relentlessly to stay on course has been her daughter Tashawna, an inspirational singer herself. “She’s always the one to say, ‘Mom, you can’t give up.’ The times when she would see my face, I could never hide my hurt. When we got the physical copy of Charlene, she started crying and told me she was so proud of me because no matter what came my way I made sure to hang in there.” Tweet paused to take a breath. “That right there is enough for me. That’s my Grammy, my Soul Train Award and whatever else. Those words from her was it.” www.chicagodefender.com

Sunset Baby, written by playwright Dominique Morisseau and directed by Ron OJ Parsons, opened January 21 to rave reviews and continues through April 10. This Timeline Theatre Company production is a timeless story that we’re all too familiar with. It captures where the personal and the political collide. Tough, independent, Black and female Nina, played by AnJi White, is the daughter of a political activist who has ended up a drug dealer and a scam artist embittered by the death of her mother and the imprisonment of her father, who long before her mother’s death left them for the Black liberation struggle. Named after singer Nina Simone, this Nina is at once colorful, direct and strong in her conviction to not be affected by her father’s desertion, when he suddenly returns and upsets the applecart. The action revolves around her father’s desire to acquire from his daughter a packet of love letters written to him by his late wife (and Nina’s mother) when he was in prison. Nina has the letters, hidden from her father and her lover, Damon (Kelvin Roston Jr.). Damon, the third side in this triangular conflict, is Nina’s partner in all kinds of crimes, although you get the sense that he, too, is dealing with the sins of his own parents, trying to stay strong while tending to his aching soul. Timeline Theatre is located at 615 West Wellington Avenue. For ticket information, call 773/281-8463, ext. 6, or visit www. timelinetheatre.com/tickets.
