How many of us go about our daily lives with an effortless routine? Many of us have been programmed to design our routine as significant milestones take place – marriage, children, school, work. We don’t think about the anxiety that it sometimes yields in where we live or how it can have lasting affects on our children. Chicago is the third largest city in the nation with a population of 2.7 million, according to 2014 Census numbers. But it has become known as one of the country’s deadliest cities with the highest number of people shot and wounded – 834 – and killed by gun violence – 152 – since 2016 began. The magnitude of the violence that has riddled our streets has impacted not only the neighborhoods that have bared the burden, but the children who reside there. The Chicago Defender sat down with several young people from age 12 to 18 years to discuss concerns they face growing up in some of the toughest predominately Black neighborhoods. In an on-going series, we will discuss the concerns of living as a young African-American resident on the West and South Side of Chicago.
Being Young, Black And Safe In Chicago Zyleik Gladney
Age: 17 Junior Westinghouse College Prep Academy Zyleik Gladney is a Chicago public school student who may seem to some to be just another statistic, but as you delve deeper, you understand he is not your stereotypical kid from the West Side. Raised by a single parent, Zyleik has four brothers – three older brothers, one of who is currently in the Navy. A junior at Westinghouse College Prep Academy, he sees himself following in the footsteps of his brother Andrew, who has been in the Navy for about four years. “I want to go the Navy, too,” Zyleik says. “But that’s not my long term goal. It’s to become a doctor. I’m hoping the Navy can pay for my schooling. I don’t want to put any pressure on my mom. She doesn’t have to worry about stress to get the money to go to school and then med school. I will be in school for a long time.” His routine is similar to most of us. He rises at about 6 a.m., showers, brushes his teeth, gets dressed and prepares to leave the house going to school. Unlike students

in neighboring suburban schools, a yellow school bus doesn’t greet him at the corner of his block. He leaves his home early for the CTA bus stop waiting to ride the Harrison #7 for 15 minutes then switch to the Kimball-Homan #8, which drops him in walking distance of his school. “Sometimes I’m on facetime with my girlfriend, that’s how I wake up,” he says. “We stay on the phone, like overnight. She and I go to the same school. I hang up the phone and track my bus. I usually get on the bus about 7:13am. I tell mom and pops I’m leaving and I love them. It’s an average of 45 minutes to get to school.” A series of non-stop classes sets the tone for his day, beginning with his Accounting class and ending with his eighth period U.S. History class. It doesn’t break his cool and the day-to-day battle of making it from home to school to work and home again keeps his senses alert. “I keep my head up. I never keep both headphones in, especially if I’m by myself. Sometimes, you just got to look to your right, look to your left and look behind you. Keep your eyes up, never down, you never know what can happen,” he says. continued on next page

Zyleik makes it a habit while waiting at the bus stop to watch every car that passes, as well as to dress down a bit. “I definitely got to watch out,” he says. “It’s never been this crazy. Sometimes you can’t even put any headphones on –depending on the time of day.” Where Zyleik resides, the Austin and Garfield Park communities have the highest ranking of gun shot victims and homicides. At the Defender’s press time, Austin’s latest homicide count topped off at 22, with 92 wounded. Garfield trailed behind with 12 deaths and 79 wounded victims. The Chicago Police Department repeatedly points the finger at gang members and individual beefs, but Zyleik feels it goes beyond the gangbanger label. “I think it’s fear,” he says. “People fear what’s about to happen, or what’s coming. Sometimes you have people that want to beef from the streets, but they’re not cut from that cloth. That means they’re willing to do anything to show that they can be a part of that group so they’re willing to shoot anybody they see. The crazy part is that they can’t even shoot. They’re trying to hit something they don’t hit so, now what?” As a young Black male, he has witnessed too many of his peers targeted or approached as a daily routine. The distrust of law enforcement is at its highest on the heels of repeated video releases showing people of color dying at the hands of officers. It leads Zyleik to wonder if “we’re pointing guns at
Zyleik Gladney each other versus the real enemy. I’m not saying to point the gun at the police. I think we lack education. You should know what to do in a situation when the police approach you and your hands are in your pocket; it may look like you have something on you.” Unlike the young guys who can’t shoot straight, Zyleik says of the police, “They know where to aim, they know how to kill you. Look at the news, a police shoots a kid, they’re dead. There are no wounds, they just die.” Being a part of mentoring programs and currently a youth counselor at Simon Park, Zyleik attends workshops preparing him to beware of the law and know his rights. “Police can’t search your car without a warrant,” he says. “They cannot search your person without a warrant unless they feel threatened. It’s simple things like that.” www.chicagodefender.com
FRONT PAGE JUMP Kenyelle Meeks
Age: 13 8th Grade Charter School Network Kenyelle Meeks is a young student with dreams of becoming a professional dancer. She lives with her mom who makes sure to drive her to and from school. There is no CTA bus for her, out of fear of what could happen. “I don’t go outside because I don’t feel safe where I live, so I just stay in the house,” Kenyelle says. Her school has a diverse student body that resides in various parts of the city so she often sees the difference between herself and other classmates. “I don’t think it’s a problem with me because I’m not an outside person. Most of my friends live downtown so they don’t have a problem going outside,” she says. “There are more people surrounding them. There are a lot of people and businesses in their neighborhood. Most people who are shot, are shot where there’s less people. It happens more with kids who live where I live.” It’s become the norm to not understand that it’s not normal to not be able to have a choice to go outside. To have that choice which raises the awareness of having key rules of routine in place to assure her safety. Her mom allowed her to take Tae Kwon Do classes, but also equipped her with a cell phone.
Kenyelle Meeks “Make sure you have a phone. Make sure it’s over 30 percent charged. If I call you and you don’t answer, I will come and get you. Make sure you are ready to fight back,” Kenyelle says her mom told her. “She allowed me to go to Tae Kwon Do. I already go to dance but I wanted to go. I feel like in life, you have to learn how to protect yourself. You never know what will happen. Somebody came into the school with a gun. I heard the sirens and I waited in one of the places where they tell us to hide. “Sometimes I aspire to help kids because I think some kids don’t have the adult aspect that they need in their lives. Maybe their parents may have gone down the wrong path and they’re teaching them the same. I still want to dance, but I also want to help kids.”
Jodeci Gladney
Age: 18 Senior Frederick Douglass Academy High School Jodeci Gladney has had a rocky road to redemption in his young years, but will be graduating in two months. He carries himself in a respectfully, mild-mannered way, but opens up about his experiences. He’s not a member of anybody’s gang or cliché – he doesn’t sell drugs, but has developed a routine of smoking weed. As he prepares for the school day, he and his buddies will smoke a blunt and afterward they get out. “I don’t be on the block to gang bang. We just smoke weed, watch TV and play video games,” he says. “You can’t really do anything nowadays. You can’t even take your little brother and sister outside without knowing what is happening out here.” Jodeci can remember his grammar and middle school years being less intense and not riddled with constant gunfire as background noise. “When I was younger, it wasn’t as bad. Now, friends I grew up with are gone. The friends of my older brothers are dead or in jail. It’s just crazy. I don’t see how people can go to jail and come out to do the same thing. “I used to be out here stealing – going to stores – just to get high.” After being caught on several occasions, he stopped realizing this was leading to a path of juvenile jail
Jodeci Gladney time. The disappointment and sadness that his mom endured coming to the police stations was enough for him to turn around. Regretfully he admits, “It was the high of stealing. Steady ditching school just to go out to smoke. Once I smoked, I’m out of school and it’s still early. Nobody else was out but me. I wish I could go back and start over.” He feels with the support of his family and aspirations to attend community college, he still is very conscious of his environment. He doesn’t allow the environment he resides in to dictate his fate. “I feel like I have to be alert when I’m outside. There’s other ways to solve problems, you don’t have always to fight or pick up a gun. I’m not saying to let anyone hit you. It’s about being the bigger person and helping your peers out.” continued on page 07
THE CHICAGO DEFENDER • April 20 - 26, 2016 03
PROFILE Kai EL’ Zabar Defender Executive Editor We may have missed their birthday, but we would be remiss if we did not reflect upon the lives of A. Philip Randolph, labor leader and social activist, and Harold Washington, Chicago’s first Black Mayor, both of whom share April 15 as their birthday. Their contributions to our communities are major as the significant changes the made impacted the lives of millions. Both men were trailblazers who upset the status quo in their time. Philip Randolph was an organizer and social activist who championed equitable labor rights for African-American communities during the 20th century. He was also co-editor with Chandler Owen of The Messenger from 1917-1928, which was noted for helping to strengthen African-American intellectual and political identity in the age of Jim Crow. It is said of many leaders that they did not choose to lead, rather the cause chose them. Had A. Philip Randolph had his druthers, he may have become an actor. Shortly after Randolph’s married, he helped organize the Shakespearean Society in Harlem. With them he played the roles of Hamlet, Othello, and Romeo, among others. However failing to win his parents’ approval to be an actor, he moved on. Influenced by socialism and the ideologies espoused by the industrial workers of the world, he developed what would become his distinctive form of civil rights activism, which emphasized the importance of collective action as a way for Black people to gain legal and economic equality. To this end, he and Owen opened an employment office in Harlem to provide job training for southern migrants and encourage them to join trade unions. Interestingly, as did others in the labor movement, Randolph favored immigration restriction. He opposed African Americans’ having to compete with people willing to work for low wages. Unlike others, however, he rejected the notions of racial hierarchy that became popular in the 1920. After publishing the Messenger with the help of the Socialist Party of America, it was viewed as radical campaigning against lynching, opposed U.S. participation in WWI, urged African Americans to resist being drafted, encouraged them to fight for an integrated society, and urged them to join radical unions. The Department of Justice called the Messenger, “the most able and the most dangerous of all the Negro publications.” When the Messenger began publishing the work of Black poets and authors, a critic called
A. Phillip Randolph and Harold Washington
Really Started Something it “one of the most brilliantly edited magazines in the history of Negro journalism.” The Messenger was powerful but short lived, because three issues divided the magazine staff – the growing rift between West Indians and African Americans, support for the Bolshevik revolution, and support for Marcus Garvey’s Back-to-Africa movement. Randolph’s first experience with labor organization came in 1917, when he organized a union of elevator operators in New York City. In 1919, he became president of the National Brotherhood of Workers of America, a union that organized amongst African-American shipyard and dockworkers in the Tidewater region of Virginia. The union dissolved in 1921, under pressure from the American Federation of Labor. Randolph’s great success came with the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, which elected him president in 1925. Under the leadership of A. Philip Randolph, Pullman Porters formed the first all-Black union. This was the first serious effort to form a labor institution for employees known as the Pullman Porters of the Pullman Company, which was a major employer of African Americans. The railroads had expanded dramatically in the early 20th century, and the jobs offered relatively good employment at a time of widespread racial discrimination. Because porters were not unionized, however, most suffered poor working conditions and were underpaid. The owner, George Pullman, sought out former slaves to work on his sleeper cars,

The Department of Justice called the Messenger “the most able and the most dangerous of all the Negro publications.” and they served American railroads for 100 years from the late 1860s until late in the 20th Century. Formation of the union was instrumental in the advancement of the Civil Rights Movement. Until the 1960s, Pullman Porters were exclusively Black, and have been widely credited with contributing to the development of the Black middle class in America. Many of the Pullman Porters after the Emancipation Proclamation were educated men (doctors, lawyers, architects, engineers etc.) who were not able to perform in their areas of expertise because white firms would not hire them. These men understood better than anyone Robert Sengstacke Abbott’s call to leave the oppressive South and Randolph’s radical stance on racism as well. As a consequence they played a major role in distributing Abbott’s Chicago Defender throughout the South even though it had been banned. Through his success with the Pullman Porters Union, Randolph emerged as one of the most visible spokespeo-
ple for African-American civil rights. In 1941, he, Bayard Rustin and A. J. Muste proposed a march on Washington to protest racial discrimination in war industries, and for an end to segregation, access to defense employment, an anti-lynching law and the desegregation of the American Armed forces. Randolph’s belief in the power of peaceful direct action was inspired partly by Mahatma Gandhi’s success in using such tactics against British occupation in India. Randolph threatened to have 50,000 Blacks march on the city; it was cancelled after President of the United States Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 8802 – known as the Fair Employment Act. Some activists, including Rustin, felt betrayed because Roosevelt’s order applied only to banning discrimination within war industries and not the armed forces. Nonetheless, the Fair Employment Act is generally considered an important early civil rights victory. The movement continued to gain momentum. In 1942, an estimated 18,000 Blacks gathered at Madison Square Garden to hear Randolph kick off a campaign against discrimination in the military, in war industries, in government agencies, and in labor unions. Following passage of the Fair Employment Act, during the Philadelphia transit strike of 1944, the government backed African-American workers’ striking to gain positions formerly limited to white employees. Buoyed by these successes, Randolph and other activists continued to press for the rights of African Americans.
In 1947, Randolph and colleague Grant Reynolds renewed efforts to end discrimination in the armed services, forming the Committee Against Jim Crow in Military Service, later renamed the League for Non-Violent Civil Disobedience. When President Truman asked Congress for a peacetime draft law, Randolph was bold and urged young Black men to refuse to register. Since Truman was vulnerable to defeat in 1948 and needed the support of the growing Black population in northern states, he eventually capitulated. On July 26, 1948, President Harry S. Truman abolished racial segregation in the armed forces through Executive Order 9981. In 1950, along with Roy Wilkins, Executive Secretary of the NAACP, and, Arnold Aronson, a leader of the National Jewish Community Relations Advisory Council, Randolph founded the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights. A major civil rights coalition, it coordinated a national legislative campaign on behalf of every major civil rights law since 1957. Randolph and Rustin formed an important alliance with Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1957, when schools in the South resisted school integration following Brown v. Board of Education, Randolph organized the Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom with Martin Luther King, Jr. Randolph was the man behind the man. In 1958 and 1959, Randolph organized Youth Marches for Integrated Schools in Washington, D.C. At the same time, he arranged for Rustin to teach King how to organize peaceful demonstrations in Alabama and to form alliances with progressive whites. The protests directed by James Bevel in cities such as Birmingham and Montgomery provoked a violent backlash by police and the local Ku Klux Klan throughout the summer of 1963. It was captured on television and broadcast throughout the nation and the world. Rustin later remarked that Birmingham “was one of television’s finest hours. Evening after evening,” he said, “television brought into the living rooms of America the violence, brutality, stupidity, and ugliness of (police commissioner) Eugene “Bull” Connor’s effort to maintain racial segregation.” Partly as a result of the violent spectacle in Birmingham, which was becoming an international embarrassment, the Kennedy administration drafted civil rights legislation aimed at ending Jim Crow once and for all. Randolph finally realized his vision for a March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963. It attracted nearly 300,000 to the nation’s capital, and the rally is often remembered as the high point of the Civil Rights Movement. continued page16

Every morning, she gets ready for her school day like most students – finding the right outfit without trying too hard, but enough to look cool. Her father is the school security guard and she rides with him – arriving about 45 minutes before classes start. The intelligence of Tamia also is in alignment with her street smarts. She’s lived in the Austin community all of her life and walking by herself is not an option. His quiet demeanor also housed someone who had a short fuse who dealt with his anger through aggression and fighting. At 16, Jeremiah discovered his love for playing sports, which eventually helped him manage his anger. “Football was my first sport. I used to have anger issues – I used to be mad at the world. If somebody said something to me wrong, I would want to fight,” he says. “The first thing I joined was B.A.M. (Becoming A Man).” After awhile, Jeremiah became the student vice president of B.A.M. He says it taught him not react to certain situations with anger. “Words are not supposed to hurt you, so if they’re not putting their hands on you, just shake it off,” he says. “Walk away. Kill somebody with silence and walk away.” Everyday, Jeremiah’s routine usually plays out the same at school. “I get all of my homework done, talk to the teachers, go home and talk to mom. If I’m not playing basketball or doing something productive, then I’m not going outside. There’s nothing outside for us. So, I’ll stay inside and read a book or something or fill out job applications,” he says. In talking with most of the students, it seems that being outside can be associated with trouble. “I

We take the same route everyday.” He explains, “You treat people how you want to be treated. I say, ‘excuse me’ and ‘thank you.’ It’s a two-way street – you have to give respect to earn respect. If not, you’re going to have to switch up your route to school.” Jeremiah’s plans include attending college and raising his GPA in order to qualify for the free tuition plan offered by Chicago City Col-

He doesn’t intend on being a statistic – studying social work or becoming a pediatrician is on his radar. “I was raised by my mother,” Jeremiah said. “I was going to learn from her or it would be the streets. When you feed a child’s mind, you feed their curiosity for limitless opportunities. Former principal and educator Liz Dozier understands this clearly as she’s tackled the challenges of the Chicago Public School system and helped high school students meet their academic goals. As the principal of Fenger High School, she was depicted on CNN’s eight-part series “Chicagoland” as the tough but caring principal guiding her faculty and students to an 85 percent decrease in the dropout rate and a 45 percent increase of freshman on track to graduate. Her tenure at Fenger since 2009 was also featured in Paul Tough’s New York Times Best Selling book, “How Children Succeed.” Dozier has now taken on a new chapter in her professional career after resigning her post as principal and joining Chicago Beyond as the managing director. She’s instrumental in delivering and creating opportunities that
Andre Carter Defender Contributing Writer To help close the digital divide in inner-city urban areas, Comcast has been providing free access to the Internet and computers at participating community-based organizations. Recently, the communications company and leaders from local community-based organizations and elected officials announced the creation of an “Internet Essentials Learning Zone” that will help bring crucial online services to Chicago’s Englewood, Fuller Park and Washington Park neighborhoods. Comcast committed to providing free access to the Internet via WiFi on premises at three community-based organizations within the zone, and to donating $30,000 to the organizations to purchase new or upgrade existing computer equipment and support digital literacy training programs. The community organizations that will benefit are: • Fuller Park Community Development Corporation at 4417 South Stewart Avenue; • Hope Technology and Education Center (Hope Tec) at 1354 West 61st Street; and • KLEO Community Family Life Center at 119 East Garfield Blvd. www.chicagodefender.com
Chicago Beyond Increases Opportunities for Youth Programs help young people access what they deserve in school, career and life. “I’m just excited. I spent these last five months really building it,” Dozier says. “It’s designed to amplify the impact of other organizations because we don’t need to re-invent the wheel. There’s already people in our communities doing really good work, so why not support those organizations? “What I found in my experience as a principal is if you don’t have research behind you in this day and age, it’s hard for organizations to get further funding.” The new, privately held organization will focus on two kinds of investment initiatives – the GO Innovate challenge and GO Together investments. Chicago Beyond is seeking new ideas from existing non-profit organizations and programs that serve a greater number of youth. They will invest and test these new ideas and over time, aim to leverage the findings to further engage public
Liz Dozier and philanthropic funding to enrich Chicago’s youth. The organizations selected will be awarded up to $2 million for their winning program proposal. “I would encourage people to go the website: chicagobeyond.org where we have information on our first Innovation Challenge,” said Dozier. “There are two challenges that we’re looking at right now.
“The first one is on the college matriculation piece – not just getting kids graduated from high school, but how do you get them through college, what supports do they need.” She says the second component of the challenge is targeting 16-20-year-olds that are not working and haven’t graduated from high school. Chicago Beyond wants to develop a support system that not only provide jobs, but helps them with skill development that will eliminate roadblocks such as lack of childcare, lack of transportation and other holistic support. As a former educational administrator, Dozier has worked with many students from all walks of life and feels it’s just as important to focus on the teenage demographic that often gets overlooked in favor of younger grade school students. “We’re specifically geared towards the teenagers. I’ve seen firsthand as a principal that teenagers are in need as well,” Dozier explains.
Internet Learning Zones Help Bridge Inner-City Digital Divide “Hope Tec exists to increase digital literacy, and the new Internet Essentials Learning Zone will make it possible for the broad number of people we serve to gain access to the Internet,” said Julie Collier, Hope Tec executive director. “It is our goal to empower youth and adults to compete and excel in today’s digital world.” Hope Tec student Tracy Richardson, who is a professional hairstylist with her own line of beauty products, said, “I knew very little about computers before coming to Hope Tec. But now I am Internet savvy, and I can properly send and receive emails with attachments, perform extended Internet searches and much more. I’m grateful for this quality-filled free digital literacy program.” According to Chicago 20th Ward Alderman Willie B. Cochran, “The new learning zone will make it possible for area residents to gain access to important news and information and vital services and apply for jobs online.
“It is our goal to empower youth and adults to compete and excel in today’s digital world.” “It also will allow students to do their homework and do research for school projects, as well as allow their parents to monitor their academic progress.” Internet Essentials Learning Zones are an offshoot of a broad-
band adoption program called “Internet Essentials” Comcast established five years ago for eligible low-income families with children in school. Through Internet Essentials, participating families can get Internet service at home for about $10 per month and access to a computer for about $150. Since its inception, Internet Essentials has provided nearly 35,000 Chicago families – or about 140,000 people – and more than 75,000 Illinois families – or about 300,000 people – with access to the Internet at home. “Internet Essentials has been a great success and provides thousands of Chicagoans access to the Internet at home,” says Matthew Summy, Comcast regional vice president. “But not every household is eligible, so Comcast created the Internet Essentials Learning Zones to ensure that as many Chicagoans as possible can reap the many benefits of Internet access.”
“There are two points in a child’s trajectory when their brain is forming. There’s the three to five-year-old that everyone talks about and finds cute, but the second point is the 14-16-year-olds. The possibilities are endless and their brains are still developing. I think it’s critical that we focus on them as well.” Currently, Chicago Beyond’s four initial GO Together partners are After School Matters, OneGoal, Youth Advocate Programs and SAGA Innovations. The goal is to encourage non-profit organizations that serve hundreds of Chicago area youth to apply by April 29. Dozier wants to avoid having too many stringent guidelines, but the main requirement is to be an established 5013c organization with three years or more of service. She is taking time to spread the word through various platforms to collaborate with a diverse mix of groups across the city. “You have to have the capacity to serve hundreds of kids, at least two hundred or more,” Dozier says. “That’s because we can actually learn from what folks are doing. We really want to get ideas from not only programs in Chicago but beyond as well.”
Comcast established the first Internet Essentials Learning Zone in the nation in 2013 in the Bronzeville, Englewood, West Englewood and North Lawndale neighborhoods. Later, the company established zones in Chicago’s Edgewater, East/West Rogers Park and Uptown neighborhoods; just west of the city in suburban Cicero/Berwyn; in downstate Illinois in Peoria and Springfield; and in South Bend, Indiana. Altogether, Comcast provides free Internet service at more than 50 community-based organizations within the Illinois learning zones. “Internet access helps families participate in their communities and in the economy. It also helps kids succeed in school,” says 15th Ward Ald. Toni Foulkes. “Solving major issues requires long-term commitments. I can’t thank Comcast enough for its efforts to close the digital divide and for staying focused on this issue for the long haul.” For more information about Internet Essentials, visit InternetEssentials.com. If you were tuning in to primetime television last week, then you may have caught the new NBC drama premiere of “Game of Silence” which debuted April 12. Coming off the season finale of the network’s hit series, “Shades of Blue” starring Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta, executives are hoping that “Game of Silence” will capture the same heightened anticipation and ratings. The show kicked off to a strong debut with two episodes airing in the same week. Larenz Tate is a part of the ensemble cast of actors that brings the non-stop action to the small screen. A Chicago native, Tate’s work as an actor began with a small role in an episode of “The Twilight Zone” in 1985 and built to memorable roles such as ‘O Dog’ in “Menace II Society,” “Dead Presidents,” “Love Jones,” “Why Do Fools Fall in Love,” “Ray,” and the award-winning film, “Crash,” among others. His repertoire of work is represented on the small screen in featured guest and co-starring roles including “Love Monkey,” “Rescue Me,” “Rush,” and “House of Lies” among his string of various featured roles on several shows. “Game of Silence” is Tate’s first co-starring role in a drama series on the NBC Network. Coming off of the TNT series “Rush,” he is very happy with his choice of character on the new series. He explains, “It’s a show about a group of childhood friends who reappear in each other’s life’s after a dark secret from their past resurfaces and they decide to band together to right the wrong of that past. That’s pretty much the pitch of the storyline – the secret of something that’s been haunting them for a long time.

So they have to go to a youth detention center and they obviously were not built for this facility.” There is much more to the storyline of “Game of Silence” with Tate’s character, Shawn Polk, who is best friends with Gil Harris, played by Michael Raymond-Jameson (True Blood). It is based on the popular Turkish television series, “Suskunlar,” created by David Hudgins (Friday Night Lights, Parenthood), and its pilot was directed by Niels Arden Oplev, known for his Swedish film, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” “This was not about stunt casting – a bunch of names for the sake for getting viewership – as much as it is staying true to the material as it’s written,” Tate said. “So, when you see this, it sets the tone as a real movie.

Tate believes what makes “Game of Silence” work is the realistic point of view from all of the characters on the show. Although it challenges key topics, it doesn’t stereotype the actors. The show delves deeper into the characters’ history and connection. The executive producer allowed the actors to come into the writers’ room, which rarely happens between the cast and show writers.
“Once we got into the series, the executive producer allowed us to come into the actual writers’ room,” Tate says. “It was a very diverse, twenty-something group. We started talking about the characters in this world, being in the South. I wanted to be clear. I told “One was a comedy, but I didn’t them my friends reflect a very difeel like that was my thing. Larron works behind the scenes handling the operations, production deals, and various acquisitions in the film industry. Lahmard, actor and writer, is often recognized for his comedic roles in such films as “Barbershop,” “Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood,” and “Rocky Balboa.” He said, “We’re trying to carve a niche in all sides of it. From the dramatic, romantic, as well as a comedy that I have been focused on. Now we’ve ventured into animation. Being able to pioneer our own destiny, we’re not waiting on the next person,” Lahmard adds. “It’s a task. It’s a sprint. It’s definitely a marathon that we plan to win.” The production team is working in partnership with Queen Latifah’s company on the upcoming film “Deuces” starring Larenz, Megan Good, Lance Gross and Lala Anderson. They are also producing a small action indie film called “Beta Test.” Both brothers are excited for their younger brother’s success and latest project because they understand how tough the business can be in staying relevant and consistent. For the first time, Larron wants to enjoy “Game of Silence” as a fan, not as a business partner. “One of the things I do with our dad – I find time where he and I watch television together. It’s a bonding thing. We may watch ‘Billions’ or ‘Game of Thrones.’ Now we can watch ‘Game of Silence.’”

She does have a new project underway but has to keep it under top secret wraps. So stay tuned.
Receiving special awards this year are director, playwright and Emmy award-winning actor Regina Taylor; entertainment reporter Janet Davies; entertainment reporter Bill Zwecker; and HBO. The celebratory evening, hosted by WGN’s Dan Ponce and Robin Robinson, begins at 6 p.m. with a cocktail reception at Lucky Strike Lounge, located at 322 East Illinois Street, followed by the Awards Ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Actress/director/playwright and Golden Globe-winner Regina Taylor will receive this year’s Career Achievement Award.

She also shared that it’s not all about the role, but also about the project itself. “I’m also interested in a project for who else is involved,” Ms. Taylor said. Her breakout television role as Lily Harper in I’ll Fly Away led to many accolades and awards, so the Defender wanted to know what about that role made it special? Not likely. Various studies show health benefits when participants eat an apple between three and five times a week, but the apple alone cannot cure all ailments. That’s why you should eat a variety of fruits and vegetables.
Defender Contributing Writer It’s one of the most recognizable expressions around: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” So, does it really have any value? Apples have a good claim to promote health. Apples have long been associated with a healthful diet. The fruit is low in calories and sodium, and high in fiber and Vitamin C.
ther Fruits Are O Healthy, Too Are other fruits just as good for you as apples? Sure. All fruits are loaded with nutrients that are building blocks to good health. Bananas are loaded with potassium, which is important for a healthy heart and proper muscle function.
They contain Vitamin A, which aids the immune system, and phenols that reduce cholesterol. They also reduce tooth decay by cleaning one’s teeth and killing off bacteria. It has also been suggested by Cornell University researchers that the quercetin found in apples protects brain cells against neuro-degenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s Disease. But just how long ago did humans coin the adage, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away?”
An Apple A Day...
“It sounds as if it should be really old, but in fact the first recorded use is in the 1860s, when it is said to be an old saying from Pembrokeshire in Wales,” said Caroline Taggart, author of “An Apple a Day: Old-Fashioned Proverbs and Why They Still Work.”
In 2012, an Ohio State University study found that eating an apple a day helped significantly lower levels of bad cholesterol in middle-aged adults, and in 2011, a Dutch study found that eating apples and pears might help prevent strokes.
The original phrase was, Taggart said, ‘‘Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.” In the 19th century and early 20th, the phrase evolved to “an apple a day, no doctor to pay” and “an apple a days sends the doctor away,” while the phrasing now commonly used was first recorded in 1922.
This is good news for Black folks because they suffer at a disproportionately high rate of strokes and high cholesterol.

With all of this information, it’s easy to see that, yes, an apple has its health benefits. But does eating an apple every day mean you’ll never get sick? And is an apple really healthier than other fruits?
Recent studies have shown that, unlike many fruits and vegetables, the nutritional benefits of apples remain relatively stable as long as 200 days after harvest.
While an apple a day will go a long way toward keeping the doctor away, most nutritionists recommend a varied diet. In addition to apples, fill your shopping cart with citrus fruits, tropical treats like mangos, and a variety of berries, which pack a nutritional punch.

RECIPE
Black America Donna Battle Pierce Syndicated Columnist, (Black Press Syndicate) This time of year, my shopping cart seems to naturally brake in front of asparagus displays. With in-season prices at their best, I’m serving them regularly…steamed, broiled, roasted… added to sauces, casseroles, frittatas and even rolled into delicate sandwiches spread with seasoned cream cheese, as I did last week for my sister’s church tea party. Asparagus is a shoot vegetable, classified with artichokes, hearts of palm, endive and celery. Select tightly budded young green spears of the same dimension -- pencil thin or fat. Cook the same size together so they will cook evenly. The plant is native to Europe, getting its name from the Greek word asparagos, meaning to swell. The stalks come in two varieties, a fleshier European variety that when grown without light pro-duces a white or pale stem, as well as a commercially cultivated thinner variety.

1 pound fresh asparagus, ends snapped off or trimmed 1/4 cup, plus 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 teaspoon Creole seasoning 1/2 teaspoon salt Freshly ground black pepper, to taste 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1 teaspoon Dijon-style mustard 1 cup grape or cherry tomatoes, halved if large 2 cups baby arugula or spring lettuce leaves, torn into bite-size pieces 3 tablespoons coarsely grated Parmesan cheese Parmesan cheese shavings, for garnish, optional
Heat oven to 425 degrees. Lightly rinse Place trimmed asparagus on a paper towel to dry completely; set aside. Whisk together 1 tablespoon of olive oil, Creole seasoning, salt and pepper in a large shallow bowl or pan. Add asparagus; toss with your hands to coat completely. Place asparagus on a foil-covered baking pan that has been lightly brushed with oil. Roast asparagus, turning as needed, until spears reach desired tenderness, about 15 minutes. Set aside to cool, about 10 minutes. Whisk together the vinegar, mustard, remaining olive oil and grated Parmesan; set aside.
To serve, toss arugula with vinaigrette in a medium bowl; divide greens among four plates; top with roasted asparagus and tomatoes on top or to the side. Use a vegetable peeler, shave thin strips of cheese from a flat side of the Parmesan. Add to top of salad, if using. Makes four servings. Profiles, continued from page 04
Harold Lee “Here’s Harold!” Washington was the first African-American mayor of Chicago. He was born on April 15, 1922 to Roy Washington, a lawyer, Methodist minister and one of the first Black precinct captains in the city. His mother Bertha, was a wellknown singer in Chicago. Growing up in Bronzeville, Washington attended the newly completed DuSable High School where he set records as a track star. In a 1939 citywide track meet, Washington placed first in the 110-meter high hurdles event, and second in the 220-meter low hurdles event. Despite his track success, Washington left high school at the end of his junior year and worked in a meat packing plant until his father helped him obtain a job at the U.S. Treasury office in Chicago. There he met Dorothy Finch, his future wife. The couple married in 1941 when Harold Washington was 19 and Dorothy was 17. They divorced ten years later. In 1942, Washington was drafted and sent overseas as part of a segregated unit of the Air Force Engineers, then part of the U.S. Army. He served three years in the South Pacific and rose to the rank of First Sergeant. After leaving the Army in 1945, Washington returned to Chicago where he got his diploma from DuSable High School in 1946 and received his B.A. from Roosevelt University in 1949. In 1948, Washington was elected the third president of Roosevelt’s student council. Under his leadership, the student council successfully petitioned the college to have student representation on Roosevelt’s faculty committees. He earned a J.D. from Northwestern University’s School of Law in 1952 as the only African American in his class, along with six women. Washington was admitted to the Illinois bar and began practicing law in Chicago that same year. He also served in the city corporation counsel’s office as an assistant prosecutor from 1954 to 1958. Beginning in 1960, he served for four years as an arbitrator for the Illinois State Industrial Commission. Although Harold Washington worked for 3rd Ward boss and former Olympic athlete Ralph Metcalfe since 1951 and organizing the 3rd Ward Young Democrats organization, he didn’t become a candidate for office for the first time until 1965. That year, he won a seat in the Illinois House of Representatives, where he served until his election to the State Senate in 1976.
Chicago’s First Black Mayor:
Harold WASHINGTON
His years in the House of Representatives were focused on becoming an advocate for Black rights. He continued work on the Fair Housing Act, and worked to strengthen the state’s Fair Employment Practices Commission. In addition, he worked on a state Civil Rights Act, which would strengthen employment and housing provisions in the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964 Although a protégé of Metcalfe, who was part of the political machine of Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley, Harold occasionally challenged the machine as in the late 1960s when he supported Renault Robinson, a Black police officer who founded the Afro-American Patrolmen’s League to protest discrimination against Black officers and police brutality. In a special election held in 1977 to determine the successor to Mayor Daley who had recently died, Washington finished third in a field of four contenders for the Democratic nomination. In March 1980, Washington won the Democratic Primary over incumbent Congressman First District Congressman Bennett Steward and ran unopposed in the general election. On January 3, 1981, Harold became a member of the ninety-seventy Congress as the Democrat of Illinois. He served on the Committee on

“Harold’s death was a major loss because his progressive thinking could have led Chicago in an entirely different but positive direction.” Education and Labor, the Committee on Government Operation, and the Judiciary Committee. Washington supported student aid, employment training and child nutrition programs. During his time on the Judiciary Committee, he focused on the extension of the enforcement sections of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Shortly after his re-election to Congress in 1982, Washington began his second run – but first major campaign – for mayor of Chicago. He won the hotly contested Democratic nomination in February 1983 against
incumbent Mayor Jane Byrne and Richard M. Daley, the son of the late mayor, after more than 100,000 new voters registered for the election. Washington won with 37 percent of the vote, versus 33 percent for Byrne and 30 percent for Daley. Normally the Democratic nominee for the office of mayor receives token opposition from the Republican Party, but Washington’s primary victory over the Democratic political machine led to much of the organization supporting Bernard Epton, the GOP candidate, in the general election. After an unusually contentious campaign that attracted national attention, Washington won the office of mayor on April 12, 1983. On April 30, Washington resigned his seat in the House as he was sworn in as the 51st Mayor of Chicago. Much of Washington’s first term in office was marred by conflicts with the Chicago City Council – still controlled by the political machine – which blocked much of his reform agenda in an ongoing battle known publicly as Council Wars. Consequently, Washington often vetoed legislation passed by the 50-person City Council. He also forged a coalition of reform-minded African American, Latino and white aldermen. Finally in 1986, when Washington’s supporters won a one-
vote majority on the City Council, his legislative agenda was finally considered. On February 24, 1987, Harold Washington again defeated Jane Byrne to win the Democratic nomination for mayor. The Democratic machine, weakened by defections to Washington and political corruption scandals, did not challenge Washington’s re-election and he easily won the general election in November. On November 25, nine months after his primary win that guaranteed a second term, Harold Washington had a heart attack in his office and died. At his death, Harold was engaged to Mary Ella Smith. Harold Washington brought change to City Hall that was reflected throughout the city. For the first time, there was an increase in Black and Hispanic businesses established in downtown Chicago, as well as an increase in women (Black and brown) placed in important government leadership positions. An increase in contracts with minorities companies with the city were noted and had Washington lived to complete his second term, he would have gone on to complete many more terms if he chose to. His death was a major loss to the city because of his progressive thinking that could have led Chicago in an entirely different but positive direction. Among Harold’s select and memorable accomplishments as Mayor of Chicago, he: • Created the Ethics Commission. • Increased the number of underrepresented groups in city government and in city contracts • Opened government with a Freedom of Information executive order. • Led the fight for ward redistricting, and more Black and Hispanic representation. • Opened the city’s budget process for public input and participation. • Achieved more balanced economic development between neighborhoods and downtown. • Encouraged neighborhood festivals and projects. • Created a citywide cultural plan. • Guided the effort to build a new central library that helped revitalize the South Loop; the library was named in his honor after Harold’s death. • Led the movement for Illinois’ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday bill. www.chicagodefender.com

LEGAL NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE
To patrons of Commonwealth Edison Company:
Commonwealth Edison Company (“ComEd”) hereby gives notice to the public that on April 13, 2016, it filed with the Illinois Commerce Commission (“ICC” or “Commission”) its annual formula rate update, including updated cost inputs, a revenue requirement reconciliation, and supporting testimony and other information, all for the purpose of determining, pursuant to Section 16-108.5 of the Illinois Public Utilities Act (the “Act”), updated rates for delivery services applicable throughout ComEd’s service territory in northern Illinois to be applicable beginning with the first monthly billing period of 2017. As provided in Section 16-108.5 of the Act, the updated costs are based on final historical cost data for calendar year 2015 reflected in ComEd’s most recently filed annual FERC Form 1, plus projected plant additions for calendar year 2016, as well as the associated adjustments to accumulated depreciation (change in depreciation reserve), depreciation expense, and accumulated deferred income taxes. In addition, ComEd’s 2015 actual costs, which are now known, are reconciled with the corresponding costs that had been used as part of the prior formula rate update filing. Those updated costs and other inputs, and that reconciliation, collectively result in a distribution revenue requirement on which new delivery services rates are to be based (referred to in the filing as the “2017 Rate Year Net Revenue Requirement”) of $2,652,852,000. This is an increase of $137,515,000 from the analogous revenue requirement approved by the ICC in last year’s annual update.
For residential customers receiving bundled fixed price electric service from ComEd, the delivery services charges are only a portion of the total bill. The remaining portion includes the cost of the electricity supply and other services, which are subject to the procurement process established by Section 1-75 of the Illinois Power Agency Act and the provisions of Section 16-111.5 of the Public Utilities Act and/or to regulation by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Using rates applicable with the April 2016 billing period for such other components, the estimated total bill impacts of changes in the delivery component are provided herein. Increases are denoted by a + sign and decreases are denoted by a – sign.
For such customers, the delivery portion of electric bills represents approximately 42% of the total electric bill, on average, while the supply portion accounts for about 44%, the transmission portion accounts for approximately 8% and other charges such as taxes account for the remaining 6%. As a result, all other things being equal, the updated rates for the delivery portion result in an overall change in the total residential bills, on average, of +$2.23 per month or an estimated +2.7%. Total bill impacts for residential customers vary by delivery class and electric usage. For example, the estimated total bill impact, on average, for multi-family residential customers without electric space heat utilizing on average 343 kilowatt-hours (“kWhs”) per month, is -$0.53 per month or -1.1%. Likewise, the estimated total bill impact, on average, for single-family residential customers without electric space heat utilizing on average 748 kWhs per month, is +$3.82 per month or +4.0%. Furthermore, the estimated total bill impact, on average, for multi-family residential customers with electric space heat, utilizing on average 798 kWhs per month, is -$0.79 per month or -0.9%. Additionally, the estimated total bill impact, on average, for single family residential customers with electric space heat, utilizing on average 1695 kWhs per month, is -$0.72 or -0.4%. ComEd does not estimate total bill impacts for residential customers supplied by Retail Energy Suppliers.
The updated delivery service rates for nonresidential customers in the Watt-Hour and Small Load delivery classes (100 kilowatts (“kW”) or less of demand), with varying usages result in an overall percentage change in the total bill in the range of +3.3% to +2.0%. Nonresidential customers with larger electric loads (greater than 100 kW) have a wide range of electric load characteristics in addition to electricity supply costs that cannot be reasonably estimated; therefore, the overall effect of the updated delivery service rates on an electric bill for such customers cannot be determined.
