redominately an industrial town in the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, Flint, Michigan was once home to some of the giants in automobile manufacturing and their cottage industries that dumped tons of corrosive waste into the Flint River for decades. Since the auto industry was the largest employer in town, this never concerned authorities until the decision was made under Republican Governor Rick Snyder’s administration to switch the city of Flint’s water supply from Detroit to Flint’s very own river. Governor Snyder appointed Emergency Manager (EM), Darnell Earley to oversee Flint while it was under state receivership. The city of Flint was declared insolvent, in part, due to the inability of its poorest citizens, who couldn’t afford higher taxes to pay the pensions of city government retirees. Census data from 2012 reveals that 31 percent of Flint residents live in poverty. In 2011, it would have cost every person in Flint $10,000 to cover the unfunded legacy costs of the city’s public employees. EM Darnell Earley stated, “There is no money” and as such the city’s “legacy costs” are unsustainable at 30 percent of the city budget. “Therefore, they must be cut one way or another for the city to remain solvent.” In April 2014, in an effort to save millions over the next few years, city and government officials approved switching from Detroit’s treated water to water from the Flint River. Initially ignored and downplayed was the fact that the corrosive river water caused deterioration of the lead pipes poisoning the water that Flint residents relied upon.
Flint, Michigan: Misled Almost immediately, Flint residents began to complain about the water’s foul odor, discoloration, and taste. And several institutions sounded the alarm about the elevated levels of lead and other contaminants in the water, but government officials turned a blind eye insisting that the water was “safe to drink.” According to MSNBC’s research team, Flint administrators failed to add anticorrosive phosphates to the water to prevent the corrosion of the pipes – at a cost of only about $100 per month.
History Of Lead
Lead is a heavy metal found primarily in the earth’s crust. It can also be found naturally occurring in the environment in trace amounts, in soil, and in some plants. Left undisturbed in its natural state, it poses no significant threat to humans; however, once mined and transformed, lead becomes highly toxic and never loses its toxic potential. Some historians believe lead is the first of the metals to be smelted by man as long ago

as 7,000 BC due to its malleability, softness, and ease to extract. Its earliest domestic use can be traced to Anatolia, Central Asia, where small beads of metallic lead were discovered alongside copper and golden objects between 65007000 BC. Initially, there was little demand because its pliability and lackluster was of little use in tool making or jewelry design. Then over the centuries, its usefulness began to grow for practical purposes like weights, plugs, vessels and solder. With lead being a by-product of silver and gold production, it didn’t begin to catch on until the Roman Empire began to use silver and gold for everyday items. Rome’s domination of the ancient world was predicated on its massive ore mines and smelters that employed tens of thousands of slaves who produced enough goods for domestic consumption and then for mass distribution. Eventually, the lead could be found in everything Rome’s ruling class came to use including pots, wine urns, vessels for grape juice, makeup, jewelry and also plumbing. Due to lead’s prevalence, a Roman’s daily intake was estimated at 35 to 250 mg/ day, according to the National Academy of Sciences. Rome’s ruling class began to suffer from widespread lead-induced illnesses like gout, kidney failure, hypertension, and dementia. Geochemist Jerome Nriagu said in the New England Journal of Medicine that “lead poisoning contributed to the decline of the Roman Empire.” (

POLITICS
Robert T. Starks Defender Contributing Writer In a blistering session of the Illinois State Legislature on Friday April 22, state legislators were able to arrive at a bipartisan agreement to a short-term fix to fund public state universities and community colleges when they voted to send $600 million to fund public higher education institutions in the state. This limited funding includes state funding of $160 million to the Monetary Award Program (MAP), which will begin payments to students immediately. MAP grants are essential to low and moderate-income students who need tuition assistance. Students who are planning to attend classes this summer welcomed this news. “We should clearly understand that this funding breakthrough is only a partial victory. We still have to come back to the legislature and the governor and fight for full funding for these universities and community colleges,” said State Senator Donne Trotter. “Please be clear that this fight is not over and that this funding will at best keep these institutions open and running through the summer. We will have to continue to fight until a complete budget is passed.” Indeed, it was only a drop in the bucket for Chicago State University (CSU), which went on to lay off 300 staffers, even after receiving the $20 million, which was only 60

percent of the money the state had allocated for the institution for the previous fiscal year. Though Sen. Trotter was the point man in the negotiations in the Senate, he was quick to point out that he had able and determined support from other Democrats in the House, including all of the Black Caucus members. He pointed out, among others, that the tireless work of House members Rita Mayfield (D-Waukegan) and Elgie Sims (D-Chicago) was essential. While it was understood that the greatest need for continuation of state funding was that of Chicago State University, it was clear that all of the state universities and community colleges were hurting financially from the strain of 10 months with no state support. Most of these institutions, including Northeastern Illinois University, Northern Illinois and Governors State University, had begun cut back measures and having staff take furloughs. Because Chicago State was reported to be on the brink of closing, it received only $20 million or 60

“While we were hoping for the full funding requested, we will reduce our expenses as much as possible.” percent of its needed annual state allocation. “While we only received 60 percent of what we need for an entire school year and only one half of the MAP money, we are eternally grateful to all of the state legislators who fought to pass this bill,” said CSU Provost Angela Henderson. “We are especially grateful for
the hard work of Senators Trotter and Mattie Hunter of Chicago, as well as the House leadership of Representatives Mayfield and Sims. We are fighting to make everything work with this infusion of money. “While we were hoping for the full funding requested, we will reduce our expenses as much as possible without damaging our academic programs and services to our students.” Dr. Henderson stressed that CSU “has continued its recruitment and summer enrollment in spite of the fact that we had to cancel Spring Break and move Commencement up to April 28.” CSU Trustee Nikki Zollar concurred with Henderson in the praise of the state legislators, students, faculty administrators and trustees, whom she said, “worked together sometimes 12 hours a day doing everything possible to make sure that the school would not close its doors. “Our students were wonderful in this fight. They have given the school a new dynamic that is known nationwide. In fact, we are lucky to have a Management Action Committee that includes the president, his top administrators, union representatives,
and trustees, who all came together to impress on the state legislature the need for funding. “I have gone to Springfield before and I intend to go again soon to push for the full funding that we need. Please keep in mind that we had given out layoff notices and furlough notices, but now with this infusion of money the cutbacks will not be so severe. “I must say that I have never worked with a more dedicated and determined group of people in an effort like this before and I am thankful for all of them and their efforts.” CSU President Thomas J. Calhoun, Jr. never wavered in his determination to see the university remain open. He constantly maintained a posture of optimism when representing the university in the press and in all public meetings. He was able to maintain this stand because he knew that he had a solidly determined group of people at every level of the university that was equally dedicated as he was to see the university remain open and functioning at its best. Thus, CSU is expecting a normal enrollment of students this summer and fall. President Calhoun has informed his staff and faculty that he is thankful for their cooperation in keeping things together under the most crucial circumstances and the shared optimism that took over the campus during this fight. He firmly believes that things will get even better. www.chicagodefender.com

We posed a question to our readers some time ago asking why would you think a businessman would make a good public servant? Elected officials are elected to serve the interests of the public. They take their orders from their constituency. Too often of late, the phenomena of the desire of successful business or corporate moguls who have accomplished and accumulated wealth beyond the average American’s fondest dreams, to go and conquer the political world, has revealed a hidden agenda to eliminate government and push privatization. Rauner’s initial proposed budget cuts clearly revealed his intended goal to dissolve unions and shut down any and all government subsidized assistance to small businesses and social service and non-profit agencies. The other part of that is to open up all those then defunct businesses to total and complete privatization. This is what we have seen coming for a long time. Prisons have been privatized, as have many of the city’s services like parking meters and traffic cameras that were a major source of revenue to the city. Gone! Imagine the postal service, privately owned, as well as the public school system. Charter schools are just the first wave before the American school system is privatized because it has already programmed your mind to believe and accept that the public school system cannot deliver a good education. The American public school system provided education for all people at one time as an equal opportunity measure. So if most people accept that the government cannot not provide a sufficient competitive education, then who can? There’s public and there’s private education. That leaves us with private schools or home schooling.
he question is, was the announcement of long-awaited money owed by the state to Chicago State University meant to deflect our focus from the reality that the South Side institution is still doomed? Even with the allocation of $20 million to the beleaguered institution, which represents less than 60 percent of what the state owes Chicago State, the university immediately announced that it still has to lay off 300 members of its non-faculty staff until the rest of the money is forthcoming. After a year and some months since Governor Rauner took office, the 2015-16 state budget has still not been approved. Apparently many people/voters in Illinois believed Bruce Rauner to be the man to bring the state back to its proper place in the American scheme of things as a prosperous state, including its major star city of Chicago. Politics unfortunately is not an arena where “fair” is a rule. Clearly, some elected officials walk into their office faced with a financial mess. Rauner inherited a troubled state, the same as Mayor Rahm Emmanuel inherited a declining city of Chicago, and President Barack Tax Money For Obama inherited a country on the Equal Opportunity brink of total economic meltdown. Chicago State University, though Say what you may, but Obama a secondary education institution, took immediate steps to move the falls under the government and like country from one set of economic circumstances to another that ended up much brighter than where he found it. That move has benefited the country and the world. So what’s going on with the Gov. Rauner? Why hasn’t he been The Chicago Defender is able to able to get things moving, with all print about one out of every three of his corporate background and letters it receives. its sister schools, the city colleges or community colleges, it was established to provide at a reasonable cost the opportunity for the average American to continue his or her education and prepare for a career in the American workforce. This very important concept of leveling the playing field as part of the equation is what the ex-corporate, newly elected novice officials lack understanding of. Nor do they care. Their mindset is all about competition, the bottom line, and may the best man win – presumably meaning them. Public servants have to be people of vision who can tap into the creative reservoir of the people they serve and mine the wealth to come up with ways to reserve equal opportunity and assure equity in all areas of life. Private business operates with the goal to profit, but the government’s budget is meant to be balanced at best, and if there is a profit, then that’s a major benefit that is awarded in ways to strengthen or improve the infrastructure. Government money is meant to be spent to the fullest for the benefits of the citizens that pay their tax money to the government. This process allows for opportunities extended to others who would never be considered by those of private industry who can discriminate by color, race, creed, religion, etc. The government is an equal opportunity employer. That includes
should do to increase your chances of having your letter published. 1. Your letter must carry three pieces of basic information to make it from the starting line: your full name, your hometown and a voice telephone number at which we can reach you. This includes e-mail letters. Including your work phone number – if you can take calls there – speeds things up. Usually, we don’t even read anonymous letters. 2. equal opportunity education. However, if the elected leadership does not work to find a way to dig us out of the hole we’re in, equality will be a thing of the past. The 150-year-old Chicago State University is symbolic of this turn and it is important that we as a people not let it become past history. So back to the top, after receiving an approved $20.1 million in emergency funding last week, last Friday CSU announced that more than 300 employees – equaling about one third of its workforce – are being laid off effective immediately. Faculty members were spared during this initial wave of cuts but are likely to be affected later after their contract runs out in the fall. Unfortunately, “It was less than what we needed and later than we needed it, as much as we appreciated getting it,” CSU President Thomas Calhoun said. “It really is a Band-Aid and not the solution.” The reality is that the fate of CSU is on the people who want it to exist. That is us. So call the school, find out what you can do to help. Participate and make a difference.
length, clarity, and taste. Writing “Do not edit” on your letter usually guarantees that we won’t … but we won’t print it either. 4. Help us verify your factual information. A letter that says, “According to the January issue of Speak Out, youth are more likely to rally and march than to engage in dialog,” will get printed before one that just says, “Youth rally and march but don’t engage in dialog.” 5. It helps us if you give a publication date for the thing that caught your eye. You also can respond to other letters, but make it about the issues instead of a personal attack on another letter writer. 6. Writing, “I dare you to print this, you Uncle Toms!” on your letter doesn’t really affect your chances of getting published. 7. We usually don’t consider more than one letter from a writer

We don’t print form letters, nor “third person” letters, such as “an open letter to the President.” 10. LEAD, continued from, Page 02
Lead In Our Water
With a capital budget of $2.1 billion for 2014-18, the Department of Water Management (DWM) is responsible for approximately 4,400 miles of sewer and water lines, which were installed at the rate of 75 miles per year between 1880 and 1930. In 2012, Chicago established an aggressive schedule to replace at least 880 miles of water mains, and rebuild or reline over 750 miles of sewer mains over 10 years, according to its capital report. Although Chicago reportedly doesn’t have any lead water mains, there’s a reported 400,000 lead service lines that connect homes and businesses to the main water lines throughout the city. In a class action suit filed two months ago against the city of Chicago, Tatjana Blotkevic, Ilya Peysin and Yakov Yarmove allege that the work Chicago is undertaking to replace water mains and meters is causing elevated and unsafe lead levels in the water traveling through lead service pipes that pour directly into residents’ homes. The suit adds that the City has failed to warn of the dangers of drinking or cooking with Chicago water after the city has completed its work. The Chicago Defender set out to find who gave the okay to use lead pipes – a well-known neurotoxin since before the late 1800s – in Chicago’s water distribution system. When asked this question, Gary Litherland, spokesperson for the DWM stated, “I have no idea,” and that “it may have been in the codes.” By the 1920s, American cities were starting to ban lead pipes. The lead industry mounted an aggressive campaign to change the www.chicagodefender.com
“Almost immediately, Flint residents began to complain about the water’s foul odor, discoloration, and taste, but government officials insisted the water was safe to drink.” public’s perception of lead. Spearheaded by the Lead Industries Association (LIA), they sent representatives to speak with local water authorities, federal and state officials and plumbing associations. They sustained their campaign for decades by publishing books and articles and eventually their efforts proved successful. The tobacco industry took a page out of their notebook as they sought to fight criticism of tobacco products as harmful to human health. The North, South and West sides of Chicago once housed some of the city’s most infamous housing projects: Cabrini Green, Robert Taylor, and Henry Horner, as well as had some of the highest crime rates among juveniles. Completed in the 1960s, these largescale urban developments not only had lead plumbing but lead-based paint as well. In the 1970s at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Herbert Needleman
conducted studies that determined that lead poisoning had long-term complications on children’s behavior, academic success, and aggressiveness. He tested the lead in the bones of 194 juveniles 12 to 18-yearsold who had been convicted in the Allegheny County Juvenile Court against 146 students in regular high school who had no behavioral problems. The results were published by the American Medical Association and found that delinquent children were four times more likely to have elevated concentrations of lead in their bones. “Lead is a brain poison that interferes with the ability to restrain impulses,” and “increases a child’s risk for doing bad things,” according to his report. As a result of his findings, the Centers for Disease Control, for the first time ever, issued guidelines for the diagnosis and management of lead poisoning in children.
oor Communities, P Lead Problems
The Consumer Product Safety Commission banned lead from interior paints and the Department of Housing and Urban Development removed lead from thousands of housing units around the country. When asked about the possible connection between lead poisoning in Black and brown children, high school dropout rates and increased crime rates in the Black community, Sharon Ngwen, who works in violence prevention among youth, said: “The damage has already been done.” A Chicago Youth Justice Data Project report shows that 24 percent of high school students with an identified disability and 27 percent of students in the bottom quartile received out-of-school suspensions in 2013-14. And while Blacks represent 37 percent of youth 17 and under, they accounted for over 79 percent of juvenile arrests in 2013-14, the report shows. Chicago’s former water commissioner, Tom Powers announced his resignation on April 7, 2016, in anticipation of the city starting a citywide lead testing program. Despite his sudden resignation, city officials are adamant that Flint could never happen in Chicago. “To protect all of Chicago’s residents, throughout the city, and in every neighborhood, the Department of Water Management has
a robust anti-corrosion program in which phosphate is added to the water and forms a coating on any lead pipes, inhibiting the lead from leaching into the water,” says a Water Dept. spokesperson. The city is currently replacing old water lines across town. According to the filed lawsuit, “usually, after pipes have been replaced, there is an increase in the lead in the water due to old coating in the pipes being disturbed.” Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Agency has set the maximum contaminant level for lead in drinking water at zero. But health experts advise,
“Don’t boil the water; this only concentrates lead. Let your water run a few minutes if it’s been sitting in the pipes for a few hours and invest in a good filter that can filter out the lead and other contaminants.” “Additionally, any resident of Chicago that is concerned about the quality of their tap water can have it tested for free by calling 311,” says Litherland, the city’s spokesman. “What is ironic,” says Dr. Needleman, “is the fact that during Roman times lead poisoning was primarily a disease of the affluent, while today it is an affliction of primarily the poorer communities.”

he good news is that cigarette smoking is low with Illinois youth – only 4.9 percent of 8th graders and 8.9 percent of 10th graders have smoked cigarettes in the past year. The bad news is that a higher percentage of both groups used illegal prescription drugs than smoked cigarettes during that same time period – 5.4 percent of 8th graders and 9.2 percent of 10th graders used prescription drugs compared to their numbers for cigarette usage. For Illinois high school seniors, alcohol is the drug of choice compared to all other substances. Among 12th graders, the three most commonly used drugs are alcohol, marijuana and cigarettes, while prescription drugs come in fourth with them. These are some of the highlights of the “Illinois Youth Survey 2014 State Report,” which is conducted every two years by the Illinois Dept. of Human Services to monitor alcohol, tobacco and other drug use among Illinois youth. Interesting parallels are drawn in the study when it comes to drug usage among young people in the state by race. For instance, white kids are more into cigarettes, booze, prescription pills and blow. White kids were the least likely to use marijuana, inhalants and over the counter drugs to get high. Weed, apparently, is a Black thing. African-American youth as a group in Illinois are least likely to drink or smoke cigarettes or use cocaine, or use any prescription drugs. Seems Black kids go straight for the blunts. Male youth of all groups are more likely to use everything, except that young Illinois females drink more than the guys. In addition, Illinois 8th and 12th graders are more likely to use alcohol than their national counterparts. However, the report indicates that underage drinking in Illinois is on the decline, with use of alcohol in the past year and in the past 30 days being lower among 8th and 10th grade students in 2014 compared to 2012. The study finds that in 2014, among all Illinois 12th graders: • 63 percent drank alcohol • 39 percent smoked marijuana • 18 percent smoked cigarettes • 13 percent used prescription drugs not prescribed to them
Substance Abuse, Mental Health Focus Of National Prevention Week
It says, “Cigarette smoking is the earliest drug use behavior, with an average age of first use at 14.2 years, followed by first alcohol use at 14.6 years, and marijuana at 15 years of age. “If prevention efforts are to be successful in delaying substance use initiation, targeted ages should be 13-16-year-olds to reach them when they are confronted with initiation decisions during these critical years.”
The Mental Health Part
• 5.5 percent used ecstasy • 5 percent used LSD • 3 percent used cocaine • 0.9 percent used heroin • 0.7 percent used meth Problematic with these results is that four out of 10 of these 12th graders who have used alcohol by 12th grade, may be at risk for alcohol abuse or dependence later in life. Almost 40 percent of the 12th grade drinkers first used alcohol before the age of 15; 17 percent of them were drinking regularly before the age of 15. Because early use is associated with alcohol dependence in adulthood, these young people are at elevated risk for abuse or dependence later in life.
Preventing These Incidents
That brings us to the point of this story, which is National Prevention Week, which this year will be held May 15-21. National Prevention Week is an annual health observance conducted by the federal government’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration dedicated to increasing public awareness of, and action around, substance abuse and mental health issues. National Prevention Week is held each year near the start of summer because summer is a season filled with celebrations and recreational activities where substance use and abuse can happen – such as graduation parties, proms, weddings, sporting events, and outdoor activities.
08 May 04 - 10, 2016 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
“Youth who start drinking before age 15 are five times more likely to develop alcohol dependence or abuse disorders later in life.” National Prevention Week is also timed to allow schools to take part in a prevention-themed event before the school year ends, raising awareness in students of all ages. According to the Substance Abuse Administration, percentages of young people beginning to use marijuana, cigarettes and alcohol increase between spring (April and May) and summer (June and July), and the timing of Prevention Week helps to educate young people and their families at this crucial time of year. (Author’s Note: Anecdotally, that information seems to be about right concerning springtime usage. This writer first puffed marijuana shortly before high school graduation in May, and by the time of entering college in the fall, was blazing weed like Cheech and Chong.
Stopped smoking the stuff eons ago, though – something about losing short-term memory. I digress; what is this story about, again?)
Days Of Prevention
Supported by the Substance Abuse Administration, National Prevention Week highlights six topics, one for each day: • Prevention of Tobacco Use – Monday, May 16 • Prevention of Underage Drinking and Alcohol Misuse – Tuesday, May 17 • Prevention of Prescription and Opioid Drug Misuse – Wednesday, May 18 • Prevention of Illicit Drug Use and Youth Marijuana Use – Thursday, May 19 • Prevention of Suicide – Friday, May 20 • Promotion of Mental Health and Wellness – Saturday, May 21 “By preventing children and teenagers from trying or using alcohol and other substances, we significantly reduce their risk for developing drug dependencies or abuse disorders as adults,” says Karel Homrig, executive director of a group called Prevention First. “Studies show that youth who start drinking before age 15 are five times more likely to develop alcohol dependence or abuse disorders later in life than those who begin drinking at or after age 21 years. “According to The Partnership for DrugFree Kids, 90 percent of all adults with drug or alcohol problems started using before the age of 18, and half before 15.” As far as the effects of prevention go, the 2014 Illinois Youth Survey explains how it works, using cigarettes as a model.
The piece promoting mental health and wellness during National Prevention Week is also essential, as many people who are addicted to drugs are also diagnosed with mental disorders and vice versa. According to the National Institutes of Health, approximately 20 percent of youth ages 13 to 18 experience severe mental disorders in a given year. For ages eight to 15, the estimate is 13 percent. The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that: • Mental disorders can lead to drug abuse. Sometimes people use drugs to “self-medicate.” The drugs make them temporarily feel better. • Drugs can make a mental health problem worse, during both intoxication and withdrawal. • Drugs and alcohol can cause a person without mental health problems to experience the onset of symptoms for the first time. The Substance Abuse Administration urges families, communities, and organizations to become involved in spreading awareness about the importance of substance abuse prevention and mental health and wellness in several ways. Families, schools, communities, and organizations can host substance-free postprom and graduation parties this spring. Communities can support school-sponsored substance free events. They can start a simple dialogue discussing their commitment to prevention of substance abuse. Such a conversation is recognized as a first step toward change. They can hold town hall meetings, memorial walks, social media campaigns and other events to initiate prevention efforts in the community. Individuals or organization interested in conducting such activities with the assistance of the Substance Abuse Administration can visit their website at http://www. samhsa.gov/prevention-week.

EDUCATION As part of the celebration, the Chicago Chapter of Original Tuskegee Airmen and Tuskegee Airmen, Incorporated partnered with the organization and flew over the grave of Bessie Coleman in Lincoln Cemetery in Chicago in tribute to female aviation pioneers.
By Ken Hare Defender Staff Writer When most people hear the term “fly girl,” immediately, In Living Color might comes to mind. The comedy sketch show produced by the “first family” of comedy – the Wayans – aired on Fox from 1990-94. The groundbreaking series helped launch the careers of Jamie Fox, Jim Carey and Fly Girl dancers Carrie Ann Inaba (Dancing With The Stars judge) and Jennifer Lopez (singer/ songwriter), and choreographer Rosie Perez. However, long before there were fly girl dancers, there was a literal, living, breathing fly girl named Elizabeth “Bessie” Coleman, one of the foremost pilots of her era. Bessie Coleman was born January 26, 1892, in Atlanta, Texas to sharecroppers, George and Susan Coleman. One of 13 children, she attended the Missionary Baptist Church for her early childhood education and went on to attend Oklahoma Colored Agricultural and Normal University (Langston University), where she eventually dropped out for financial reasons. Around 1915, at age 23, Coleman moved to Chicago to live with her brothers and took a job as a manicurist to support herself. She became inspired by the tales of World War I pilots by listening to the radio and reading the Chicago Defender.
First Assistant Manager of the Bessie Coleman Library, Deborah Burns expressed gratitude for the artwork that was donated by Withers.
Celebrating Fly Girl Bessie Coleman “Her level of achievement is nothing short of phenomenal. And her ability to think outside the box is remarkable,” said one noted historian.
Withers’ artwork will be on permanent exhibit at the Bessie Coleman Library, 731 East 63rd Street, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. The nonprofit TFLA/Fly Girls, accepts donations for support. Email jacqueline_withers@yahoo. com for more information.
Jacqueline Withers, while painting murals of the legendary Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American military aviators in the United States armed forces, became inspired. In 2003, she founded the Take Flight Leadership Aviation/Fly Girls Bessie Coleman Chapter in Denver, Colorado. TFLA/Fly Girls is a leadership development program that gives girls of color an opportunity to learn about aviation, work on planes and get some time in flight simulators and in the air.
Withers says she wanted “to have an impact on the historical moment in higher education and, to help students explore their goals, visions and dreams.” Coleman acted on her inspira- Withers educates youth about “Queen Bess,” as the tion and enrolled in aviation school, first Black woman aviator to dazzle audiences with which was unheard of at the time her stunt flying was called. for a woman, yet alone a Black one. “She is truly a remarkable woman, and her work to spread the history of Bessie Coleman is commendable,” Burns said. Bessie’s famous message, “refuse to take no for an answer,” dominates the theme of the brightly colored pieces.

ENTERTAINMENT “I create music for anyone who has ever been in love or ever lost love.”
Soul Music With a Modern Twist Mary L. Datcher Syndicated Columnist,
Anthony Hamilton is a singer and musician whose voice is timeless. Over the last two decades he’s built a solid reputation as a prolific singer and songwriter. A native of North Carolina, his soulful voice is influenced by the rich traditions of Southern gospel and foot stomping hymns that are often compared to the music of legends like Al Green, Bill Withers, and Donny Hathaway, as well as his male back-up vocalists The Hamiltones – a modern day version of The Mighty Clouds of Joy. Growing up, Hamilton said he listened to a diverse range of music. “There was a lot of Natalie Cole and Andre Crouch played in my house while we were growing up,” Hamilton says. “Bill Withers and Otis Redding both provided a blueprint for bringing raw emotion into my music. I also draw from all types of genres, especially country and blues, which both tap into that vulnerability that allow you to let go.” In the mid-1990s, with several record labels under his belt and touring with D’Angelo as a background vocalist, Hamilton was also working on his music. In 2003, he made an impact with “Charlene” on his second album Comin’ From Where I’m From, which was later certified platinum in 2004. Other studio albums followed, including Ain’t Nobody Worryin’ and Southern Comfort. Hamilton signed with Arista Records and debuted with his fourth album Point of It All in 2008. His record label changes throughout his career as a singer and songwriter may have been seen by others as a challenge, but Hamilton doesn’t see it that way. He says, “I don’t like to look at them as challenges, but rather as opportunities. Life in general is about shifts and changes, so I apply it to my music. I’m ready for whatever. As an artist, you gotta always be conscious about staying true to your creativity.”
His voice was also heard on the song “Freedom” from the soundtrack album for Quentin Tarantino’s film Django Unchained with indie artist, Elayna Boyton. The Grammy-award winning singer and songwriter graced the public with Back to Love and his celebrated Christmas album, Home For the Holidays, on RCA Records released in 2014. In his music, his sound is soulful and raw, but brings a great deal of gospel influences. So how much does his faith play into how he composes, produces and delivers a song? “I’ve always been a man of great faith, having grown up in the church. Each and every day, I acknowledge that my voice is a gift that I’ve got to nurture and protect,” he answers. “When working on new music, I have faith that I’ll be guided. I have faith that whatever I’m feeling will shine through, especially because I

know so many of us go through the same things in life.” Recently, Hamilton treated fans with another stellar project, What I’m Feelin’, on March 25, when he launched a 30-city concert tour along with Fantasia that will carry into this summer. The lead single, “Amen,” written by Hamilton and co-produced by Salaam Remi and James Poyser, reveals the poignant honesty and appreciation of a woman’s attributes. “What I’m Feelin’ was a chance for me to express such a wide range of emotions,” he revealed. “I went through a divorce and allowed that moment to really inspire me. The song “Walk in My Shoes” deals with that period of my life. But the project isn’t just about pain. I’m grateful to know that love still exists. It also deals with building love back up again.” This message in his music can also
contribute to his large female following and strength across urban adult contemporary radio formats. But it’s not just his female fans the North Carolina native caters to – he believes it’s everybody going through something that gravitate to his music. “I create music for anyone who has ever been in love or ever lost love,” he proclaims. “I speak about the fear that men have about love and the power that women have to influence love. “I also think about the heartbreak that women endure because of men who are afraid to be vulnerable. I believe that’s my mission. Everyone has their own way of expressing themselves and that’s not for me to judge.” Anthony Hamilton appears live in concert at the Arie Crown Theater on June 1. If you don’t catch him in the Windy City, make sure you check his website for other cities. It is a show you don’t want to miss!

If
one thinks of the retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, “Kerry James Marshall: Mastry,” as a church, know that you are entering a sacred space.
Not one of your ordinary churches that you might attend on any given Sunday, but one, nonetheless, that holds truths and beauty most high. In the narthex of this “church” are the bulletins, the information, the holy books. These “holy” books are art history textbooks. Every single college student in America who became an art major or minor (or was looking for an easy “A” elective) has studied from either Janson’s History of Art or Gardner’s Art Through the Ages. These texts informed the students’ thinking, appreciation for and instruction on how to think about their own work. Marshall has enjoined a myriad of artists and thought leaders in rethinking and recreating these texts. On one long table are texts that
The art of Kerry Marshall
The Mastry Of Truth have been blacked out, blotted out, added to and sidebar noted – all in an effort to tell a whole story, an inclusive story, a truth. Stepping into the nave of this “church” are paintings spanning 30 years of the Birmingham, Alabama native. Marshall moved to Los Angeles at the age of eight, two years before the Watts riots. Living just blocks away from the epicenter of those riots, he knew and did not know the how and why of the goings on. Too close and yet so far away. The L.A. Black Panther Party
headquarters were in his neighborhood. He knew the good guys who fed kids and seniors. The news that the rest of the world took away from the riots and from the work of the Panthers was so far removed from his understanding. He knew the goodness. Studying to be a painter at the Otis School of Art and Design, he also had to study from the same flawed Janson’s History of Art, as did everyone else. He felt its failures in telling the full truth and set about do-
ing so in his own way. He studied, he learned, he added to. In the nearly 70 works of this retrospective, in large-scale paintings and intimate portraits, Marshall shares his truths – of community, of Blackness – in the most beautiful of ways. There are subjects we all know in our neighborhoods – the barbershop, the beauty shop, the liquor store. Having called Chicago home for some years, a Chicago native will recognize some of the places, but all are knowable.
Aside from the urban settings and the best/worst of planned housing, Marshall also tackles historical figures and moments. His portraits of Nat Turner’s Rebellion might be Nat or might be any of the enslaved men who participated in that slave revolt. Festooned with beautiful yellow flowers, they look more like saints waiting for canonization than rebels. Then there is John and Harriet Tubman. Not the Harriet who is old and wears the weight of her years that most of us are used to seeing. This Harriet is placed with her husband John. She is embraced. She is loved. She is the object of love. The portrait is a portrait within a portrait – lovingly being handled and hung within some gallery of honor. Lovingly handled by Black hands. Also, within the nave of this sacred space are loving portraits and scenes of men, of women, of Boy Scouts, of Brownies (wink, wink), all clad in the black that Marshall found so missing in the canons of art history and American history. This retrospective proves him out to be one of the greatest living painters in America today. “Mastry” is worthy of one visit or many. It is a must. For beauty. For truth. For Blackness.

stein. I believe that most readers have in their memory banks the Oscar winning film starring a young and fierce Yul Brynner as the king. The film was full of exotic clothing and scenery and the wondrous music of Rodgers and Hammerstein. This staging gives the viewer the same glitz, the same beauty, the same joy, but, wait a minute, something is verrry different. Though we loved Yul as the king, he was Russian-born and that’s a long way from Burma. In that film and on Broadway previously, the king was always played by a Caucasian male. Many of the other characters, whether on Broadway or in a small production, mostly have been performed by white actors and actresses. But in this version? Paolo Montalban is the beloved king in this production. Montalbano, a Filipino(!) actor, plays the king with all of the good nature, handsome looks, man-ata-crossroads, sexiness that one would ever want this king to be. Playing next to the beautiful voice and face of Kate Baldwin, we are finally treated to a pair that is more accurate to the races of the written characters. By the way, one might remember Montalbano as the Prince to Brandy’s Cinderella in the televised production. And there is more. Just about everyone in the king’s court is of some Asiatic influence. It was a beautiful thing to see and witness – from the king’s chief wife, Lady Thiang, performed with wit and charm by Rona Figueroa, through to all of the many children and wives of the king. The story begins at the dock in Burma when Anna and her son are warned by the ship’s captain that the king she is about to work for is a very fierce man. She outwardly ignores his warning and prepares herself and her son for their new chapter.

Her young son asks if she might be afraid. With that question begins the first song by Anna, “I Whistle a Happy Tune.” The audience was captivated from that moment to the last. We are quickly transported from the massive sails of the ship to the opulent palace of Siam. In Anna’s first meet (and conflict) with the king, we are treated to the iconic “Etc, etc, etc.” moment when the king asks, “What is this etcetera?” A spark flies between the two and we know that we are along for a delightful ride of “will they or won’t they?” The second coupling in the musical is between Princess Tuptin, Ali Ewoldt, and her companion Lun Tha, Sam Simahk. The princess is a gift to the king and is beautiful and is in love with Lun Tha. The lovers meet secretly as often as possible and eventually decide to run away together. The king is at a crossroad of modernity and antiquity. Anna represents the promise of the new world, but how does he break with every tradition that has been passed down to him? He makes a valiant effort to change, but it is his young son, the heir apparent, who makes the most change near the end of the play. The musical is based on the life of Anna Leonowens, who did in fact teach the 87 children and 39 wives of King Mongkut of Siam. She was born in India, spent part of her teen years in England, married in India, lost her husband, and then found a way to protect her life and the lives of her children. A woman alone who tackled those obstacles and succeeded were perfect fodder for her life to be celebrated. Leonowens penned her own story after moving to the States. Her writing and her sense of self led her to be an ardent feminist. It was this strong sense of self that made Hollywood and then Broadway take notice. And The King and I was born. I recommend that you see this production and walk out singing, “I Whistle a Happy Tune!” The King and I runs through May 22. For more info, visit www.lyric.org. AD CODE: BLEED SIZE: PUB:

By Freddie Allen NNPA National News Editor Sidnee King, a 20 year-old broadcast journalism student at Howard University, admitted that she was nervous about her summer plans, the day before the 2016 “Discover the Unexpected” (DTU) journalism fellows were announced. King said that she missed the DTU program launch on March 23, when officials from the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), Chevrolet and the School of Communications at Howard University revealed that eight student journalists would be selected to produce content for four NNPA member publications. “She said, ‘It’s okay, you’re going to figure it out, don’t worry,’ because I panic some times,” said King. King’s mother reassured her that things would work out, and when they did, King couldn’t wait to share the great news. “So I just called her and told her that I figured out what I’m doing this summer and it includes an internship and a scholarship and all this good stuff, so she was really excited for

Lawson-Borders surprised the student fellows last Friday with a special guest appearance by hip-hop pioneer MC Lyte, who also serves as the national spokesperson for the DTU program. MC Lyte revealed that the fellows will have access to a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu to use as a pool car during their internships. “Just to see the fellows getting inside the [Malibu] and shooting video and snapping photographs and talking…it was all truly amazing,” said Michelle Matthews-Alexander, Chevrolet’s Diversity Marketing
Manager. “We’re thrilled and we can’t wait to see the content that the students will create.” Benjamin Chavis, the president and CEO of the NNPA, said that not only will the journalism fellows get a good learning experience, but the NNPA publishers will also gain from the perspective that the millennials will bring to their newsrooms, “so, this is going to be a mutually beneficial program this summer.” Victoria Jones said that having access to the Chevrolet Malibu to use as a pool car adds a level of professionalism to the whole experience. Jones worked for the AFRO in Baltimore, Md., and Washington, D.C. from 2014-2015. “When I found out that there was another opportunity to work with the Black Press, I was really excited about it,” said Jones. Jones said that unlike the content that she created at the AFRO, when she interned at mainstream media outlets the stories were often tailored for a general audience.
“I missed that aspect of reporting on things that I’m personally interested in and that people I talk to are personally interested in,” said Jones. “I missed that connection and targeting issues that affect the [Black community].” While Jones said that she’s looking forward to reporting about the D.C. statehood issue and voting rights at the Washington Informer, King said that she wants to write about education reform in Detroit and the Flint water crisis. Matthews-Alexander said that she enjoyed having face time with the journalism fellows and the opportunity for Chevrolet to showcase its commitment to the program. “What’s most exciting about this phase of the program, from a Chevrolet perspective, is that [students] are going to go out and really uncover these unexpected stories and find those men and women in these communities that are doing amazing things that we might not hear about,” said Matthews-Alexander. “So for [Chevrolet], a brand that is focused on the positive and being optimistic and ingenious, at the end of the day, we feel like this is perfect.” www.chicagodefender.com
RECIPE
Black America Donna Battle Pierce Syndicated Columnist, (Black Press Syndicate) Just ask Beyonce. When life gives you lemons, remove the fresh juice from some, thinly slice others. Then use a zester for an added touch of flavor. If you’re making a beverage for Juneteenth or a special gathering, add a red hue before stirring this cultural heirloom blend together in an old family pitcher. In her just released Lemonade album, Beyonce shares her maternal grandmother’s legacy recipe, calling for 8 lemons and juice strained through a clean napkin. My niece’s pink lemonade stand is usually standing room only when she offers the homemade sip by the glass outside her dad’s Friendship Heights office in Washington D.C.. According to Alexis, secret ingredients include lemon slices sprinkled with zest her mom grates from the citrus with a zester. “Barbecue calls for a red drink with a big personality,” Adrian Miller recommends in Soul Food, the Surprising Story of an American Cuisine, where he highlights red choices for a Juneteenth beverage ranging from punch made with red Kool-Aid and sliced lemons to a chilled refreshment flavored with ginger, lime and dried hibiscus blossoms. Shop for packaged dried hibiscus from the delicate hibiscus flower in specialty stores and near the produce section of many supermarkets. Hibiscus tea and other beverages made from these dried hibiscus blooms are popular ingredients for several West African drinks and appreciated as a flavoring for beverages in much of the Tropics.

Its vehicle, espnW, which serves women as fans and athletes produced Women + Sports – a series of workshops and panel discussions at Morgan Manufacturing in the River North neighborhood. It was filled with powerful speakers including corporate heavy hitters Julie Eddleman (Google), John Kosner (ESPN), and Morgan Flatley (Gatorade), among other executive participants. This was the network’s first espnW event in the Midwest and brought attendees out for a day of networking, resource exchange and motivation. As a successful commentator and journalist, Champion believes the network’s mission to connect women in sports in various aspects is necessary. “It’s very important. She made sure that I had that foundation to be college bound, career focused,” said Champion, who feels that sports teaches a person to interact in a world that others may not understand. A number of Chicago athletes were on hand to share their experiences with the audience. Chicago Sky star player Elena Delle Donne and 2015 FIFA Women’s

ESPN Sports Brings Together Women in Chicago World Cup Champion/Chicago Red Stars defender Julie Johnston were there, along with prospective Olympians world champion wrestler Adeline Gray, paratriathlete Melissa Stockwell, water polo medalist Maggie Steffens, and fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad. On the “Road to Rio” panel, Muhammad discussed the adversities she faces as a Muslim American dealing with discrimination. Asked if she had experienced or noticed change since the presidential election started, Muhammad answered, “I feel that I’ve been thrown in this position to speak to media since I’ve qualified for the team. “I want people to know some of the things that are happening to me as a public figure in the Muslim community are com

When people ask me to remove my hijab when I travel. “I want people to know this is reality for Muslim people and brown people in America. We have to acknowledge this speech is wrong and ignites fear. It makes people lash out to innocent people. I just wanted to get home.”
Former captain of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team and currently ESPN’s commentator and reporter for SportsCenter Julie Foudy participated as moderator and host. She established the Julie Foudy Sports Leadership Academy, inviting girls ages 12-18 to a six-day summer sports camp to build their skills in soccer and lacrosse. As a parent, she feels it’s important to encourage youth through the good, bad and ugly of the game. “If you can reinforce all that young kids can do, instead of focusing on the limitations or the obstacles, then there’s something incredibly powerful in that because that becomes the mindset,” Foudy said.
“This is what’s possible, this is the potential. We do this as much as we can as parents, and educators. We do this everyday at our leadership academy.” Both women feel the power of mentorship is the key to helping others in a given profession especially when there is a lack of diversity in that industry. Even with the progress of more female on-air broadcasters, journalists and coaches in sports, there is still more work to be done. Champion believes it to be the key to why she works so hard. “I think it’s the reason why I push forward despite all of the obstacles,” she said. “I’m working for those behind us. I feel some times at certain instances as one of the only or one of the few. I feel that I’m at the front line battling to ensure that African American and brown women and other diverse backgrounds have a platform, a place, and someone we can relate to.” Throughout the program, men were participating in the discussion as well as present throughout the audience. Foudy believes this is the key to making sure there is a successful synergy in the workplace and on the field. And she is happy with ESPN’s progress with the annual espnW Summit. “Some of best mentors I had were men,” Foudy explained. “Men have to be a part of that conversation. I would have liked to have seen more men here, but the idea of coming into a community and celebrating it for what it has done with the Chicago Sky, the Chicago Red Stars and the different nonprofits and powerful athletes from the city – I think this is a powerful day.”

efore you toss your over the counter or subscription based medicine, stop and consider that the disposal of medication is a complex issue. The following guidelines should be followed to encourage the proper disposal of medicines and help reduce harm from accidental exposure or intentional misuse after they are no longer needed. Avoid flushing unwanted medication down a toilet or rinsing it into a sink as doing so can also cause environmental concerns because the medication is dissolved and enters the into water supply. Follow any specific disposal instructions on the prescription drug labeling or patient information that accompanies the medicine. Do not flush medicines down the sink or toilet unless this information specifically instructs you to do so. Take advantage of programs that allow the public to take unused drugs to a central location for proper disposal. Call your local law enforcement agencies to see if they sponsor medicine take-back programs in your community. Contact your city’s or county government’s household trash and recycling service to learn about medication disposal options and guidelines for your area.
Transfer unused medicines to collectors registered with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Authorized sites may be retail, hospital or clinic pharmacies, and law enforcement locations. Some offer mail-back programs or collection receptacles (“drop-boxes”). Visit the DEA’s website for more information and to locate an authorized collector in your community. If no disposal instructions are given on the prescription drug labeling and no take-back program is available in your area, throw the drugs in the household trash following these steps: Remove them from their original containers and mix them with an undesirable substance, such as used coffee grounds, dirt or kitty litter (this makes the drug less appealing to children and pets, and

Before You Toss Your Medicine unrecognizable to people who may intentionally go through the trash seeking drugs). Place the mixture in a sealable bag, empty can or other container to prevent the drug from leaking or breaking out of a garbage bag.
T he FDA’s offers a few more tips: Scratch out all identifying information on the prescription label to make it unreadable. This will help protect your identity and the privacy of your personal health information. Do not give your medicine to friends. Doctors prescribe medicines based on your specific symptoms and medical history. Something that works for you could be dangerous for someone else. When in doubt about proper disposal, ask your pharmacist. Follow same disposal methods for over-the-counter drugs as well. Some prescription drugs such as powerful narcotic pain relievers and other controlled substances carry instructions for flushing to reduce the danger of unintentional use or overdose and illegal abuse.
For example, the fentanyl patch, an adhesive patch that delivers a potent pain medicine through the skin, comes with instructions to flush used or leftover patches. Too much fentanyl can cause severe breathing problems and lead to death in babies, children, pets and even adults, especially those who have not been prescribed the medicine. Even after a patch is used, a lot of the medicine remains. You don’t want to throw away a used patch that contains a powerful and potentially dangerous narcotic that could harm others. Questions around the practice of flushing certain medicines concern leaving trace levels of drug residues found in surface water, such as rivers and lakes, and in some community drinking water supplies. “The main way drug residues enter water systems is by people taking medicines and then naturally passing them through their bodies,” according to the FDA. Another environmental concern involves inhalers used by people who have asthma or other breathing problems, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Read handling instructions on the labeling of inhalers and aerosol products because they could be dangerous if punctured or thrown into a fire or incinerator. To ensure safe disposal that complies with local regulations and laws, contact your local trash and recycling facility.

Sunshine Day the Movie, the world of a once happy wife and mother of eight is turned upside down when her husband begins displaying signs of mental illness. She tries desperately to keep her family together, but despite all of her efforts, three people end up dead and one critically injured during a domestic incident on Chicago’s South Side. This movie is a true story about a woman named Sunshine Day. It is a period piece set in the 1970s about a young girl fighting to keep her family together. The movie is adapted from the book with the same title written by April L. Tylon, who also wrote the screenplay. It is directed by Lawrence Lee Wallace. Tylon says that they wanted the film to capture the essence of the book of which she is all too familiar. The characters are very real to her
as the story derives from her real life experience. The husband who suffers from mental illness was her father and the wife he shot and killed was her mother. Though based around a tragedy and the impact it has on the entire family, more than that it’s about atonement, forgiveness and embracing the reality that mental illness, if not detected and/or addressed, can lead to the destruction of an entire family and the larger community. A subject overlooked, ignored and often excused in our community has to be addressed. It is a story of redemption, of learning how to take lemons and make sweet lemonade, but also about vision and seeing a very different future. Sunshine Day the Movie premieres with a red carpet affair Sunday, May 8 at Chicago Showplace Roosevelt ICON located at 1011 South Delano Court. Red carpet is from 5-5:25 p.m.; book signing 5:30- 5:55 p.m.; movie screening: 6 p.m.
