he Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is the latest problem that has sat at the doorstep of Mayor Rahm Emanuel like an abandoned infant with no safe haven. With the heightened problems that have plagued our community rearing their ugly heads, the average Black Chicagoan is not fazed as to whether Mr. and Mrs. George Lucas take their $1.17 billion museum to another city. Ever since the initial news of the City of Chicago selling the Lucas’ the land south of Soldier’s Field on the lakefront for $10, the museum proposal has not fared well with Chicagoans. Now plans are to build the museum on the land where the Lakeside Center-East McCormick Place sits and that includes the Arie Crown Theater. In the midst of the largest tax hike in Chicago history, a state budget teetering on financial Armageddon and the Chicago Teachers Union pushing for a strike, how does “the force” help Chicagoans? Or better yet – how does it benefit the African-American community? A native of Chicago and wife of Hollywood’s most influential producers and creators, Mellody Hobson is a powerhouse in the financial world as the President of Ariel Investments. Her community outreach is familiar with key stakeholders, as she has been involved with helping various organizations and causes long before becoming Mrs. George Lucas. Hobson grew up between the North and South Sides, attending St. Ignatius High School and later achieving academic success at Princeton University. Her grit and determination was like no other as some have observed. She worked at a young age helping her mother – a single mom – clean rental units, working to buy properties in order to convert them into condominiums. Hobson’s attributes to building a successful career in the financial world began at Ariel

Investments, where founder, CEO and Chairman John Rogers immediately hired her after she graduated from Princeton. She earned her AB from Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of International Relations and Public Policy. She serves as chairman of the board of trustees for Ariel Investment Trust, and in addition, she is the chairman of the board for DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc., and a director of The Estee Lauder Companies Inc. and Starbucks Corporation. Her influence in making Chicago the home of the Lucas museum primarily rests on benefiting educational initiatives in arts, technology and culture for students. Hobson is the chairman of After School Matters and has donated over $30 million along with her husband George Lucas.

Official Disappointment

Hobson recently released an official statement on her disappointment of the holdup in getting the museum done in Chicago. Hobson said, “As an African American who has spent my entire life in this city I love, it saddens me that young Black and brown children will be denied the chance to benefit from what this museum will offer.

“As Chair of the Board of After School Matters, which serves 15,000 public high school students in Chicago and has more demand than can ever be met, I have seen first-hand what art can do to spur imagination and creativity, heal the soul and advance society – something so needed right now.” Hobson is one of the top leaders in the financial world and one of the most recognizable faces in her field. Her public appeal has increased over the years as a regular contributor and analyst on CBS News as well as sharing money tips on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. “This is a city of big shoulders and a metropolis that is second to none. In refusing to accept the extraordinary public benefits of the museum, the Friends of the Parks has proven itself to be no friend of Chicago,” Hobson went on to say. “We are now seriously pursuing locations outside of Chicago. If the museum is forced to leave, it will be because of the Friends of the Parks and that is no victory for anyone.” With the various developments taking place in the South Loop, there is a resurgence in commercial and luxury residential high-rise buildings taking shape along Cermak Road. What was historically known as “Record Row” and in the late 1980s was a bustling nightlife haven for Black club goers – is being replaced with under-the-radar gentrification. Black leaders have not cried out about being edged further south because of higher real estate costs and rents or neighboring complaints from White tenants on the overflow of Black club patrons entering or leaving the bars. In all of the noise of re-development, the loudest voices that we’ve heard thus far have come from an advocacy group called Friends of the Parks. That organization has become a thorn in Mayor Emanuel’s side since their opposition of the Children’s Museum being moved from Navy Pier to Grant Park; their opposition to building the Barack Obama Presidential Library on parkland; to now, with their opposition to the Lucas Museum being built on lakefront land. continued page, 07

Arrested Youth Almost Never Have Lawyers When Questioned By Ken Hare Defender Staff Writer

In

an exclusive interview with the Chicago Defender, our editorial board got the opportunity to talk with a couple of members of the Police Accountability Task Force (PATF), Lori Lightfoot and Professor Randolph Stone from the University of Chicago. The PATF is comprised of five members that held public meetings across the city to engage the public and give them an opportunity to vent their frustrations as well as offer suggestions for reforming the Chicago Police Department (CPD). In the wake of the murder of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald by white police officer Jason Van Dyke, there were large protests downtown and calls for the resignations of Emanuel and Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez. In all, PATF spent four months meeting with interested parties, including pastors, lawmakers, victim families and the police as well. Last month, they released a 190-page report detailing their findings and offering ideas that could possibly lead to real reforms if taken seriously and implemented. The report opens up by acknowledging prior task force committees. In fact, there have been five previous task forces convened over the last 100 years for the purpose of recommending police reforms. The first, in 1898 was appointed to examine what amounted to patronage hiring in violation of civil service laws. That group found that “the (police) administration now in force in Chicago is unalterably opposed to the merit system and has done everything in its power to destroy the law and nullify its provisions and has made it a mockery, a byword and a sham.” In the early 1970s, CPD found itself facing allegations of police brutality, particularly in African American communities. Congressman Ralph Metcalfe called for a “Blue Ribbon Panel” to report on the misuse of authority. The panel found that CPD used fatal force more frequently than in other big cities, and that 75 percent of those killed were Black. It also noted that “false arrests, illegal searches, and psychological violence occurred daily in exchanges between police and minorities and young people.” Fast forwarding to today, the latest PATF report says, “Of the 404 shootings by

“In 2015, of 14,994 arrested youth, only 31 had attorneys present during interrogation.” police officers between 2008 and 2015, 299 of them, or 74 percent, of the victims shot or killed were Black.” Thus, little has changed since the early 1970s the report stated. The report also goes so far as to suggest the “implementation of citywide ‘Know Your Rights’ training for youth.” The task force also looked into whether Black and brown teenagers are being arrested and interrogated without the presence of an attorney, and quite possibly being coerced and/or threatened into confessing to crimes they may not have committed. That practice is so pervasive that the numbers uncovered by the Chicago Defender’s FOIA request seem unbelievable. “It is hard to believe that this is going on right under our noses in a so-called ‘democratic’ society,” says a community activist. Of the 18,041 youth arrested in 2014, of which 17,386 were charged with a crime, only 25 had an attorney present at the time of interrogation. In 2015, 14,994 youth were arrested, 14,399 were charged with a crime, and only 31 had an attorney present during the interrogation process. Illinois State Senator Patricia Van Pelt has recently sponsored legislation providing that a minor who was under 18 at the time of the commission of any offense must be represented by counsel throughout the entire custodial interrogation. An oral, written or sign language statement of a minor made without counsel present throughout the entire custodial interrogation of the minor would be inadmissible as evidence in any juvenile court proceeding or criminal proceeding against the minor, under Van Pelt’s legislation. “This issue is resonating in a very big way,” said Lori Lightfoot. “The question is whether the political class in this town gets it, whether they think this a moment that will pass, just as the news cycle passes. “I think it’s fair to say that there are people within that class who are hoping that this moment passes away and that they can go back to business as usual and that no changes would be necessary.”

Another Bloodbath in Chicago By Mae Ebert Defender Contributing Writer This past weekend was another unfortunate Black bloodbath and noted as the bloodiest weekend in Chicago since fall 2015, with more than 50 people shot, eight fatally, over the Mother’s Day weekend. So far this year, at least 1,225 people have been shot in Chicago as violence continues at a pace not seen in the city since the 1990s, according to police data. The summer is yet to come and it’s difficult to imagine what the numbers can amount to at this rate. The shootings were spread across the city, from Roseland to the south to West Rogers Park to the north. Two people were shot on Chicago highways, including a 35-year-old man who died after being shot in the back on Lake Shore Drive. The weekend’s youngest homicide victim was 16-year-old Nathan Hicks, who was shot in the chest as he stood on a sidewalk in East Garfield Park. The oldest was 58-year-old Andres Rivera, killed at his dinner table in Archer Heights when a bullet pierced the front door and hit him in the head, police said. In just 3 1/2 hours early Saturday, a 30-yearold man was killed and 14 other people were wounded — the equivalent of someone shot every 14 minutes. Monday the new top cop addressed reporters at a news conference unrelated to the weekend’s violence but hardly avoidable on the city’s Southwest Side. Supt. Eddie Johnson brought up the weekend violence himself, stating that the gun violence in our streets is completely unacceptable. He informed reporters that much of the bloodshed is being driven by about 1,300 individuals on the Police Department’s “strategic subject list” — those believed to be most prone to violence as a victim or offender. About 78 percent of the homicide victims and about 84 percent of the nonfatal shooting

victims between Friday afternoon and early Monday were on the list, he said. “That means essentially we know who they are,” he told reporters at 49th Street and Karlov Avenue, the scene of a fatal shooting of a bank robbery suspect by a Chicago police officer. “Oftentimes, they have gang affiliations, and many have had previous arrests and convictions.” He then ticked off nearly 10 examples of how many arrests these victims had on their records, ranging from 20 each all the way up to 41. It was like an echo from his predessessor — “cycle through the criminal justice system,” often serving less than half their prison terms before returning back on the street to commit “the same acts of violence or worse,” he said. The question the people want to know, though they don’t expect that walking in he has all the answers, is what are you going to do about it? Johnson stressed that the Police Department “can’t do it alone,” and called on “colleagues in the judicial system, elected officials, community members, religious leaders and parents to help us in the fight.” This explosive eruption of violence trails a new poll showing a widening disparity in how whites and Blacks in Chicago view safety in their neighborhoods. According to the poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the New York Times, 41 percent of Black respondents felt “not safe at all” or “not too safe” compared to 17 percent of white respondents. Forty-four percent of Blacks rated their neighborhoods as a poor place to raise their children, compared with 16 percent of whites. In response to how likely it is that a young person in their neighborhood would be a victim of crime, 49 percent of Blacks said very “likely” compared with 19 percent of whites. In keeping with the data collected on point is that many of the shootings over the weekend occurred in predominantly Black areas. www.chicagodefender.com

Lately, I hear Blacks saying things like, “if Trump is elected President, I’m leaving the country.” I respond with nothing. I mean, what am I to say? Most have no resources to rely upon that would provide them a means to live anywhere outside the States, so I know that they’re just talking. However, there have been enough who have said it to make it a viable concern…the possibility of Trump becoming President of the United States. But there are things that can be done. First things first – every Black and brown person of legal voting age needs to register and then vote in the November presidential election if you don’t want Donald Trump to be your President. Remember, this is the Donald Trump who initially refused to denounce former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard David Duke in an interview. If you don’t vote, you forfeit the right to complain or participate in the democratic process to address any matter pertaining to equality or justice. So let’s look at what has happened that seems to shock the sane. It was funny at first, or at least not taken seriously, but the Trump phenomenon has become Trump the GOP 2016 presidential candidate for real. No matter what the various Republican leaders may do or say doesn’t change the reality that he is their candidate. Whether they step forth or not to endorse him doesn’t stop the train. It’s already left the station. Trump train wreck or victory in November is yet to be seen.

But I know one thing. The Republicans continue to act like spoiled brats. Either you are a card carrying Republican or not. So now what? If you’re not going to support Trump then you simply don’t vote? What kind of principled American is that? If nothing else, write in a candidate of your choice. Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker told reporters that he would not vote for Trump — citing the Trumpster’s demeanor and his comments “about women and about Muslims and about religious freedom.” He also said he sincerely doubted he could vote for Democrat Hillary Clinton and raised the possibility of not casting any ballot in the presidential race. Really? Then there’s Mitt Romney who, despite his insistence that he will not run, is being courted by a leading conservative commentator to reconsider and jump into the volatile 2016 presidential race as an independent candidate. He met with William Kristol, the longtime editor of the Weekly Standard Magazine and a leading voice on the right, privately on Thursday to discuss the possibility. Romney has been forthcoming about his position on Trump, as have front-runner rival Ted Cruz, House Speaker Paul Ryan, Mark Salter, former aide and speechwriter for Sen. John McCain, David Ross Meyers, former White House staffer, and Eliot Cohen, counselor for the Department of State during President George W. Bush’s administration He said that he would vote for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton over Trump if that was his only option. Charlie Sykes, a noted conservative columnist and author, said he won’t vote for Trump. Both former Bush Presidents have refused to state their support for Trump.

The Growing Possibility Of A Trump Presidency

“Worse is the idea of knowing that racist whites will feel more comfortable under a Trump administration.”

Col. (Ret.) Eugene F. Scott (Publisher) 2000 – 2003 David M. Milliner (Publisher) 2003 – 2004 Michael A. House (Publisher) 2008 – 2013

The GOP concern is that there is a huge possibility that there will be a suppressed voter turnout if Republicans become disillusioned by the presidential race.

No Longer A Joke My point is that this is no joke – as much as Trump has made the run for the GOP candidacy appear to be a reality TV show, it’s not. So stay focused, people, and keep your eyes on the prize. Now is the time to button down and hold fast to our demands, to be clear and concise about what we expect from the candidate that we can put in office. And equally important is that we hold the candle to the victor once elected. We must also hold the Republicans accountable for accepting all the racist, gender and other horrible remarks made by Donald Trump. Trump is dangerous because he is not a politician, he’s a high level salesman. He’s built an empire doing so, but a national and world leader that does not make him. The U.S. needs an insightful and authentically smart, intelligent leader, savvy about world government and politics, a strategic thinker where people, politics, power and economics are concerned.

should do to increase your chances of having your letter published. 1. Your letter must carry three pieces of basic information to make it from the starting line: your full name, your hometown and a voice telephone number at which we can reach you. This includes e-mail letters. Including your work phone number – if you can take calls there – speeds things up. Usually, we don’t even read anonymous letters. 2. Please print or typed double-spaced. 3. Keep it short. We suggest an upper limit of 250 words, but shorter is better, and we try to condense every letter. We do edit all letters for

What we don’t need is a poor caricature of a president who flies by the seat of his pants on issues and foreign policy. War is a slip of the tongue away at all times where Trump is concerned. That won’t make it easy to sleep at night. Worse is the idea of knowing that racist whites will feel more comfortable under Trump’s administration. They will have attitude and they will disrespect us. Will they seek to knock the crap out of us, as Trump instructed his fans to do against protestors in February at one of his rallies while offering to pay for their legal fees? He said, “I promise. They won’t be so much because the courts agree with us, too.” He still wants to build a wall and ban Muslims. If you think it’s bad now, under Trump, all decorum, etiquette, and all correctness (political, gender, racial, religious etc.) will be thrown out the window. Register to vote now and then vote in November.

length, clarity, and taste. Writing “Do not edit” on your letter usually guarantees that we won’t … but we won’t print it either. 4. Help us verify your factual information. A letter that says, “According to the January issue of Speak Out, youth are more likely to rally and march than to engage in dialog,” will get printed before one that just says, “Youth rally and march but don’t engage in dialog.” 5. It’s okay to comment about news stories, our editorials, columns, photographs and all kinds of news decisions made by the Chicago Defender. It helps us if you give a publication date for the thing that caught your eye. You also can respond to other letters, but make it about the issues instead of a personal attack on another letter writer. 6. Writing, “I dare you to print this, you Uncle Toms!” on your letter doesn’t really affect your chances of getting published. 7. We usually don’t consider more than one letter from a writer

every 30 days, and we do keep track. 8. We don’t print poetry. 9. Lots of groups ask members to send “campaign letters” to their local newspapers, but we don’t print them. Usually the first one we get on a given subject gets through, but when we see that a campaign is going on, we cut them off. We don’t print form letters, nor “third person” letters, such as “an open letter to the President.” 10. There are three ways to submit letters: • by fax to 312/225-6954; • by e-mail to editorial@ chicagodefender.com; and • by mail to Letters to the Editor, the Chicago Defender, 4445 South King Drive, Chicago, IL 60653. These are honest and fair questions that go beyond the barbershop and coffee counter discussions in our communities, according to some activists, who argue that a closed mouth does not get fed and that it’s important to raise these concerns that affect thousands of lives. There has been a great deal of financial haggling and raising of revenue by both the city and McCormick Place’s parent company, the Metro-

politan Pier & Exposition Authority. There are various players in this chess game to make it work for all invested partners, but the final sign-off would need to be authorized by the General Assembly and Gov. Bruce Rauner. As the battle ensues between the City of Chicago and Friends of the Parks, the Lucas Museum Foundation has made it very clear they are pursuing other options outside of Chicago. The saga plays out like another Star Wars edition in the Lucas film collection, but there is no fantasy or science fiction in this script. May the force be with us all.

Nina Simone

By Dwight Brown NNPA News Wire Film Critic

If

you haven’t picked up a copy of “I Put a Spell on You: The Autobiography of Nina Simone,” now is a good time to read it and let Simone reflect on her life, with her own enlightening words. If you haven’t seen the Oscar-nominated, bio-documentary film “What Happened, Miss Simone?”, it’s on Netflix and it is very moving. Enlightening and moving are two descriptive words that will never be associated with the misconceived and misguided endeavor that is “Nina.” This bio/film gained controversy early on for its unlikely casting of Zoe Saldana (Avatar). Photos of her darkened skin and prosthetic nose hit the Internet and caused a firestorm of debate. Why couldn’t the producers find a dark-skinned actress to play Nina? What difference does it make if an actress needs heavy makeup and special effects to play a role? As the movie opens, Nina Simone (Saldana) is pissed. She’s broke and is not receiving royalties for her music. She and her manager Henry Edwards (Ron Guttman) are in her record company office when she confronts an executive, who in a very blasé tone tells her she signed away her rights a long time ago. Simone reaches into her purse, grabs a gun and points the muzzle at the quivering suit. Next thing she knows she is in a psychiatric hospital, tied down because of her outbursts. Clifton Henderson (David Oyelowo), a young nurse, befriends her. Before he can barely give her an injection, she offers him a job as her assistant, at $2000 per week, and they run off to her home in the south of France. The formerly pleasant Nina turns into a tyrant, demanding champagne 24/7, refusing to take the drugs that manage her manic-depression and rarely eating. With her mood swings, it’s no wonder few agents and clubs will book her and when they do, she is a ticking time bomb. In memories and recollections, the sixty-something Simone recalls her friendships with Richard Pryor (Michael Epps) and Lorraine Hansberry (Ella Thomas), her associations with Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X, her station on the frontlines of the Civil Rights movement. In present day, she is confounded that her relationship with Clifton is never more than platonic. She wants more, and clearly he can’t oblige. He becomes her manager and tries to resuscitate her career. Reluctantly she goes on that journey with him.

Zoe Saldana

The rights and wrongs of Saldana’s performances are glaring. She infuses a rebellious nature, sadness, courage and craziness in her interpretation of Simone, successfully rekindling some of the temperamental artist’s spirit. Wisely, the production does not rely on Simone’s voice for the singing and lets the actress do her own vocals. Though she doesn’t sound like Simone when she talks or performs, her singing is sweet and jazzy. On the other hand so much of her performance seems affected and unnatural. The same can be said of her accent, which fluctuates with the wind. And she never looks like a 60-year-old woman. Ethan Hawke created an unquestionable illusion of jazz great Chet Baker in “Born to Be Blue,” without ever physically looking like the trumpet player. Saldana’s acting lacks that kind of uncanny magic. Questions: Why cast Saldana in this role in the first place? Why didn’t the producers scour Broadway and audition Black musical actresses who could sing and act the pants off this role? Why didn’t they hire someone who vaguely resembles Simone, like Viola Davis? If Nina Simone were alive today, would she like this movie? Food for thought. Pity David Oyelowo. The Clifton char-

acter is so poorly written and shallow he has no material to work with. He looks like he’s ready to cry in most of the scenes, or like he’s a little boy who got lost in a department store. This is the man who played Martin Luther King, Jr., in “Selma,” a performance that deserved an Oscar nomination. He showed a tender side in Middle of Nowhere, a brazen nature in Lee Daniel’s The Butler. He can do anything given the right script. Vivie Eteme, as a young Nina refusing to play one note at a recital until her parents are placed in a good seat, is more reminiscent of Simone in a three-minute scene than Saldana is in the entire movie. Ruy Folguera’s musical score is entrancing. On a small budget, cinematographer Mihai Malaimare Jr. (The Master) makes visions of the hillsides in Nice, France or chateau interiors (set designer Jan Pascale and production designer Missy Stewart) look evocative. Assembling footage that scans several decades, mixing in stills and keeping the film’s length at just 90 minutes is both a blessing (not hard to sit through the film) and a curse (film feels like it was cut off at the knees) for editors Mark Helfrich, Susan Littenberg and Josh Rifkin. Magali Guidasci’s costumes, though fashionable, look more suited for a play than a

film. The entire makeup department should return their paychecks. Saldana’s darkened complexion never looks even, it’s as if they caked on the makeup with a spatula and then covered it with house paint. The wigs Saldana wears must have been bought at a Halloween costume shop. Deplorable. Embarrassing. Producer/writer Cynthia Mort (Roseanne, Will & Grace) makes her feature film-directing debut with this awkwardly conceived production, which is clearly out of her wheelhouse. Nina has no sense of drama, and what’s on view rarely rises above the highs and lows of a mediocre soap opera. Mort fails to pull consistent performances from the cast. The staging of scenes is weak and never inventive. It’s hard to pinpoint what the perfect tone would have been for this film, but you’d know it if you felt it, and you never feel it. And the direction is better than the script, which focuses too much on a relationship that lacks chemistry. This film had a great opportunity to take a once-in-a-lifetime story about a troubled, legendary singer, and add insight. “Nina,” in the most frustrating way, bungles that mission. Simone’s autobiography and the Netflix documentary about her life do not.

EDUCATION

Sick And Tired Education Done Right Of Being Sick And Tired By Eleana Elan Defender Contributing Writer

V

oting rights activist, civil rights leader and humanitarian Fannie Lou Hamer was expressing herself from an authentic space when she told the 1964 Democratic National Convention, “I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.” She captured the nation’s attention when she described the injustices she and others in her community had endured in their fight for the right to vote. She had been jailed, beaten, and threatened for her advocacy, but didn’t back down. Today, though some things have changed, we as a race find ourselves fighting on so many of the same fronts that impact our overall well-being. In a perfect world, the institution of family provides the foundation for the community because it is where all things are introduced and taught. It is a laboratory of learning about life. Mothers are the first teachers. Malcolm X said, “If you educate a woman, you educate a nation.” The opposite is true as well. If the mother is not informed or enlightened, she passes on the lack of information and or skills. Such is the case with cultural values, work ethics, etiquette, and the foundation of health. Today, as Black women, we face an unprecedented health crisis based on a failure to discern what is good and contributive to our overall well-being as a healthy community. We have been mislead and virtually programmed by the news media, social media and just plain ignorance. Denial and self-neglect are no longer options. The First National Conference on Black Women’s Health at Spelman College launched the National Black Women’s Health Project in June 1983. It grew out of a collective consciousness of a nation in the grip of change – forced by the civil rights movement to face racial discrimination, by the women’s movement to challenge gender discrimination, and the women’s health movement to push back against a medical system that treated women like children. With a huge percentage of Black women as heads of household, it is necessary and viable that she be targeted to be re-educated and informed about the state of health because she shops, she decides what to buy, what to cook, and sets the precedence for the families welfare. www.chicagodefender.com

“Ask a Black woman about the state of her health and she will find a way to tell you that she’s healthy, even if she’s not.” Eating, diet and attitude creates a lifestyle often forced upon family members through force of habit. Teaching women how to improve their diets, to include exercise, rest and mental stimulus, will also educate the next generation. The National Black Women’s Health Project researched over the next 22 years and discovered much. Health conferences revealed that Black women virtually live in isolation and struggle alone with our challenges. Unknowingly, we have kept ourselves in victim mode of oppression, racism, sexism, and classism. For the first 10 years, hundreds of women met monthly in self-help groups to eventually get to what is needed and necessary. Now almost 30 years later, the world has continued to change, but our challenges remain. Only now, we live in an even more polarized political climate exacerbated by the global economic circumstance of failed education and high unemployment that looms over all of us. Perhaps as we look at health, the one positive thing is the Obama health care program. We no longer have co-payments for preventive services such as mammograms, Pap tests, and testing for STDs, so it’s up to us to get the screenings. However, with Donald Trump as the likely Republican Presidential nominee, should Trump win the presidency, it could stand to be undone. So as we move forward to accept our responsibility for ourselves, our husbands and families, let us follow the National Diabetes Association and put health first. There is also an appropriately titled book that takes a look at our health and our lives in stages and across the lifespan, starting with the uncertainties of adolescence and spanning our senior years when we experience our greatest losses. Health First, by Eleanor Hinton Hoytt and Hilary Beard, was published in 2005 and provides a guide for our future. No longer can you afford to ignore your truth. It is fact that when you ask a Black woman about the state of her health, she will find a way to tell you that she’s healthy, even if she’s not. And then she is diagnosed with cancer and dies. That has to change. Earlier diagnosis, prevention and awareness are all ways to better defend you and your family from disease and illness.

At Freedom Home Academy

“Students as young as five years old can communicate in French, Swahili and Arabic.” By Ken Hare Defender Staff Writer

R

oseland on the far South Side is home to one of Chicago’s best-kept secrets in education. Situated on the main business strip that at one time rivaled downtown is a true, one-of-a-kind entrepreneur success story – Freedom Home Academy (FHA). Freedom is a not-for-profit, fully accredited, home schooling system with its main campus at 113th and Michigan. It was started in 2010 by husband and wife team Marcus and Ashaki Bochum-Kline, who set out to change the stereotypes associated with educating children of color. “In an African-centered context, our purpose is building African children to be exceptional, academically driven and disciplined human beings,” Marcus Kline said. FHA’s holistic approach concentrates on reading, mathematics, focus, geography, health, and cultural enrichment. The school, which runs academic programming that covers preschool to high school, has achieved remarkable results. The school has two campuses and children attend school year round. Parents that enroll their children here have discovered what every parent desires and what every school administrator envies – a competent child that can compete on a global level. At their School of Literacy campus, near 95th and Jeffrey, students as young as five years old can communicate in French, Swahili and Arabic. First graders know the capitals of every country in the world and can show them to you on the map without hesitation. Second graders know all 72 elements of the periodic chart and the major systems in the human body and their functions. Marcus Kline, the Director of the school who looks to be in his early 30s, studied under the late, great, Steve Cokely. Cokely, a prolific political researcher and lecturer, spoke nationally on politics and economic issues important to the Black community. He served under the late Harold Washington and Eugene Sawyer administrations. FHA’s highly structured approach is worthy of its own course of study and analysis at an HBCU. For starters, FHA has a code of ethics that includes honoring African ancestors and the African red, black, and green flag. Sharing your knowledge and being collective with your actions. Reconciling differences with

your brothers and sisters. Accepting the consequences of inappropriate behavior. Studying to master comprehension, and acting and dressing in a dignified manner. All this helps sets the tone for accelerated learning. Says one FHA administrator, “Due to our curriculum, which engages both sides of the brain, we don’t have the problems that other educational systems encounter.” Instruction can be divided into two broad categories, proactive and reactive. These two styles of instruction stem from very different psychological bases, according to Kline. The proactive style is learner-centered and views learning as an individualized process of discovery and growth. In this mode, learners take the initiative and assume the primary responsibility for their education; the teacher acts as the facilitator or catalyst, taking cues from the learners’ interests. Planning is fluid and somewhat open. Reactive instruction places the learner in the position of responder. The teacher is the initiator and carries the major responsibility for whatever learning takes place. The assumption is that learners must, to some extent, be force-fed. The teacher is the planner, decision maker, and court of appeal. The learner reacts to the teacher’s initiatives, plans and decisions, and relies on the teacher’s assessment of his or her progress. Roseland resident and retired CPS administrator Ingrid Blackgood who specialized in early education, said, “The Black community needs to be aware of this type of education and take advantage of it. What they have achieved with our Black children is award winning.” Marcus believes wholeheartedly that ““Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today,” as goes the famous Malcolm X quote. The school is entirely private and receives no funding from the government or corporate entities because, Marcus says, once you accept their money, you have to promote their European agenda. According to the school’s website, standard tuition is $5,400 per year and can be paid in full or in monthly installments of $450. The school also accepts tax-deductible donations. When asked about future plans, Kline was eager to share the latest news about his partnership in the Motherland. He recently returned from Africa where his organization has acquired some land outside Accra to build a new school and teaching facility from the ground up. For a demonstration of what children properly educated can achieve, visit their website at www.fhaintl.org and prepare to be amazed. Freedom Home Academy can also be reached via email at freedomhomeacademy@fhaintl.org, or by calling 773/634-0616.

T

he newly restored Strange Victory, a documentary suppressed, nearly forgotten and recently rediscovered, is a politically charged story that emerged as McCarthyism was closing in. It addresses the fear and inequality that undermined the triumphant victory that plagued post war America. Strange Victory will show Friday, Sunday and Monday May 20, 22-23 respectfully as a public program of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago at the Gene Siskel Film Center, located at 164 North State. For more information visit www.siskelfilmcenter.org If you haven’t seen this film, then by all means take advantage of the opportunity presented over a three-day period. It is “the essential documentary of our moment,” according to David Bordwell of davidbordeell. net. Richard Body of the New Yorker says, “One of the best documentaries of all time.” The good fortune is that this suppressed, nearly forgotten, yet recently rediscovered politically charged film emerged just as the dark night of McCarthyism was closing in on America. Veteran leftist filmmaker Hurwitz sees the triumphant surface of postwar America undermined by fear and inequality and the racist attitudes of the vanquished strangely resurgent in the land of victors. Leo Hurwitz is perhaps best known for Native Land in 1942, the documentary co-directed with Paul Strand and narrated by Paul Robeson. Strange Victory (1948) has been less easy to see. It was scarcely distributed and, though some reviews praised it, it was accused of Communistic sympathies. Now, restored and re-circulated by the enterprising Milestone Films, Strange Victory has lost none of its compassion and righteous anger. Thanks to the energy of the Milestone team, led by Amy Heller and Dennis Doros, every citizen has a chance, say rather a duty, to see a film. In a period of postwar optimism, Hurwitz and his colleagues dared to point out that the prejudices exploited by the Nazis remained powerfully present in the United States.

The winners, it seemed, hadn’t repudiated the bigotry of the losers. American racism persisted and even intensified. The Nazis lost, but a form of Nazism won. Like The Plow That Broke the Plains in 1936, on which Hurwitz was cameraman, and the Why We Fight series, Strange Victory is largely a compilation documentary. Guided by voiceover narration, it ranges across newsreels of Hitler’s rise, chilling combat shots, and footage from the liberated death camps. But Hurwitz and his team shot a lot of new material as well, with an eye to bringing out the postwar significance of their theme. Newborn babies eye the camera, and kids play on sidewalks and in backlots. Meanwhile, anxious adults approach a newsstand. “If we won, why are we unhappy?” the narrator asks at the beginning. The question is answered at the end: “There was not enough victory to go around.” Thanks to a hidden camera, that newsstand becomes a sort of gathering spot, a place where people might encounter uncomfortable truths. Intercut with people buying newspapers are images of battles, as if the hunger for news aroused by the war didn’t dissipate. But what is that news? Hurwitz introduces it quickly: the rise of nativist bigotry. In an eye-blink, racist decals are slapped on fences, synagogues are smashed, and vicious pamphlets swarm through the frame. Race-baiting politicians, radio hate-mongers, and fascist sympathizers – the 1940s equivalents of our celebrity demagogues – are pictured and named. This is just one of many passages that guaranteed that Strange Victory could never be circulated on mainstream theatre circuits. Hurwitz mixes found footage, stills, posed images, and fully staged scenes, such as the episode in which a Tuskegee Airman tries to find a job with an airline. In this mixed strategy, he follows not only the precedent of the March of Time series but also, and more self-consciously, the Soviet documentarist Dziga Vertov.

RECIPE

Black America Donna Battle Pierce Syndicated Columnist, (Black Press Syndicate) Rereading a recent report extolling the health benefits of oatmeal reminded me how my fancy grandmother turned into the most sensible woman in the world when it came to baking cookies for her grandchildren to bring to school. When Granny was in charge of the kitchen, only oatmeal and raisin cookies were allowed for school parties, field trips or even as a special addition to brown-bag lunches. I felt as if I could almost hear Granny’s words, “Oatmeal is a miracle food for growing children,” when I retested her recipe for these crispy treats recently, remembering watching her layer the baked cookies between sheets of tissue in one of the shoe boxes she reserved especially for school treats. The third edition of Alan Davidson’s Oxford Companion to Food, edited by Tome Jaine, describes oats as “among the most nutritious of cereals,” supporting Granny’s insistence on these crispy, raisin-filled treats, and my generation following her example with the next generation who request what we once called Field Trip cookies for other than school-only events.

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Stir the flour, cinnamon, ground mace, baking soda and salt together in a medium bowl; set aside. Beat the butter and light and dark sugar with a mixer on medium speed. Add the eggs, beating until light and fluffy. Add the almond extract. Reduce the mixer speed to low; gradually add the flour mixture, about 1/2 cup at a time. Add the oatmeal and raisins, beating just until combined. Use a small scoop or tablespoon to place dough on a parchment-lined cookie sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake until golden and beginning to crisp about 14 minutes. Cool cookie sheet on wire rack for 3 minutes. Remove cookies with a spatula and let cool completely on wire rack. Makes about 3 dozen cookies.
