In 2012 after much deliberation according to Barbara Byrd-Bennett she took the job she needed to do but didn’t want. This she shared with online publication Cleveland.com reporter Brent Larkin in December of that year. Today Chicagoans are witnessing her final act, the last appearance on a public stage. Of course we had no idea it would play out the way that it has. And certainly not Chicago’s Mayor. Introduced to the Mayor’s administration through Gary Solomon, co–owner of SUPES Academy, the dance began and eventually, Rahm Emanuel saw in Byrd-Bennett the same qualities former Chancellor Rudy Crew saw in her in New York and Mike White in Cleveland. So what is it about Barbara Byrd Bennett that others find irresistibly acceptable? According to Byrd in her interview with Larkin when Mayor Rahm Emanuel asked her to run the nation’s third-largest school system, she didn’t exactly jump at the chance. She considered the bankrupted Chicago schools -- as in $1 billion short of what’s needed to meet their then current expenses. In the end it was her husband, Bruce who, “asked if she wanted to do this -- to run a mess of a school district with more students than Cleveland has residents. Byrd-Bennett knew that she did not want to do the job. Then he asked if she needed to do it. The now convicted felon said at the time, “That gave me pause, . . . There was this moment when I said to myself, ‘Hey, I think I do need to do this. I think I bring value. I think I can make a difference.’ “ So here she is after being forced to resign as CEO of Chicago Public Schools, brought up on 20 counts from conspiracy to fraud; but as part of the plea agreement, her promise to cooperate on further cases, in exchange prosecutors will drop the remaining charges.

Fallen Angel or Common Criminal? So who is Barbara Byrd-Bennett? Barbara Byrd–Bennett began her career in education when she graduated at 16 from a Harlem pubic high school. Little is said about how but she was able to teach there at 19 upon receiving an invitation to join the staff at an experimental district in East Harlem, New York. She says in her own words, “I had to get a special waiver from the state.” No matter how bad she became we have to admit that there was something special about Byrd-Bennett So after spending 12 years in the classroom, she became a principal in Harlem and eventually a superintendent in Brooklyn. Her work attracted national attention as a turnaround artist, an educator who fixed many of that city’s troubled schools. In 1998, after more than two decades working in New York, she moved to Cleveland, where she served as CEO of the city’s public school system. There, under the scrutiny of many, her performance received mixed reviews. She resigned from her position in 2006 amid allegations of corruption. However, she was never brought up on charges. On the upside one Cleveland teacher of 35 years and 8-year president of Cleveland Teachers Union, recalls, that he worked for -and tangled with many school superintendents. Byrd-Bennett was, by far, his favorite because, “Most superintendents I dealt with had good intentions, but Barbara had more than that,” said DeColibus. “She really cared about children. And she had the intelligence and willingness to work with everyone on behalf of those children.” Byrd-Bennett made her mark in Cleveland, within a few years of her arrival. Test scores and graduation rates improved. Foundations and the

business community increased their commitment to the troubled district. As the schools got better, Byrd-Bennett’s popularity soared and she reigned by far as the city’s most popular public figure. In 2001, other politicians purposely steered clear and stood on the sidelines while Byrd-Bennett single-handedly sold voters on a $335 million bond issue to rebuild the city’s crumbling schools. When a $100 million budget shortfall necessitated school closings and nearly 1,400 layoffs, student progress stalled. Her approval ratings deflated. Since her arrival, every major player in the community had changed from the mayor down and though her early successes were solid she missed her cue to exit. From Cleveland, she moved to Detroit, where she worked as Detroit Schools’ Chief Academic and Accountability Officer, while the city closed 59 schools and laid off hundreds of teachers. Could this have been the deciding factor that sealed the deal for Mayor Emmanuel? . . . Knowing that Byrd-Bennett could be the hatchet he needed to wheel the intended Chicago Public Schools closings. So here’s where the slope gets very slippery. While in Detroit she earned $216,000 annually under emergency manager Robert Bobb. Under her direction (2009-2011) DPS awarded some $3.4 million in contracts to Synesi Associates, one of the north suburban See Barbara Byrd-Bennett, Page 7

gin reform immediately. Given the continued reports of police abuse and killings, while at the same time police, prosecutors, and courts deny these abuses, the Black public will continue to distrust CPD.

Defender Contributing Writer

African Americans, since the era of enslavement, have been subjected to the regime of “Stop and Frisk” by law enforcement. However, in this post-Civil Rights and Black Lives Matter era, we are much more aware of the horror and illegality of these practices. We are now able to, in some cases, see the actual police-citizen “stop and frisk” interaction via police body cameras, cameras mounted inside police cars, and individual cell phone videos. Thus, we now have evidence of thousands of these injustices that go viral on social media and become the source of public protests and demonstrations. During the 2013 New York City mayoral election campaign, candidate Bill de Blasio promised to end the police “stop and frisk” practice. Thus, after a 14 year legal battle against this practice and the election of de Blasio, a federal judge ruled that the City of New York’s Police Department had systematically discriminated against Blacks and people of color in many cases. Mayor de Blasio immediately announced that he would

put in place measures to abide by the rulings of the court and begin reforms within the NYPD.

“Stop and frisk” and the chokehold have always been a part of the arsenal of the Chicago Police Department. However, Blacks have consistently protested against all of them, from groups like the Black Panther Party to the African American Patrolmen’s League. The fight against these practices finally came to a head when the Black Lives Matter movement demonstrations filled the streets of downtown last summer contining the protests and joining in petition with the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression.

In light of the issue in New York City, the ACLU of Illinois began a study of this practice in Chicago. The ACLU then issued a March 2015 report ‘STOP AND FRISK IN CHICAGO’. This report was definitive in its findings. “In black and Latino communities, these everyday interactions are often a ‘stop and frisk,’ says the ACLU, “Under the U. S. Supreme Court decision in Terry v. Ohio, 392 U. S. 1 (1968), officers are allowed to stop you if the officer has reasonable suspicion that you have been, are, or are about to be engaged in criminal activity. Once you are stopped, if an officer has reasonable suspicion

that you are dangerous and have a weapon, the officer can frisk you, including ordering you to put your hands on a wall or car, and running his or her hands over your body. This experience is often invasive, humiliating and disturbing,” the report concluded. The report also found that while Blacks comprise more than one third of the population of the city, 75 percent of the “stop and frisk” subjects were Black. In the summer of 2014, “Chicago police made nearly 250,000 stops for which there were no arrests or tickets,” says the report, “That rate was far higher and more aggressive than anything ever uncovered in New York City, where stop-and-frisk practices became a source of controversy and litigation. “The ACLU filed a Freedom of Information Act request to gather this information since the CPD was reluctant to release it. In addition, WBEZ reported that poor data keeping, whether intentional or unintentional, on the part of CPD was shabby. Clearly, the records are not accurate for this police practice.

After the release of this report in March, the ACLU began discussions with the city in an effort to avoid lengthy and expensive litigation. Finally, in August of this year, ACLU was able to reach an agreement with the city. The Chicago Police Department has agreed to begin immediate changes in their police practices in Black and Latino communities. Independent monitoring and evaluations will be conducted by former federal magistrate Judge Arlander Keys. Judge Keys will provide reports twice a year on CPD stops and pat downs to determine whether the city is meeting the terms of the agreement.

Chicago Superintendent of Police, Garry McCarthy, like former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner William J. Bratton, believes that the “stop and frisk” practice was constitutional and that it contributed to a reduction in crime. “It’s not going to be a change in the actual way that we stop people, it’s going to be a change in the way that we record the stop,” says McCarthy according to the New York Times. Thus, young Black activists like Corey Mason of Young Black Leadership and Professor and community activist, Bennie Lee, doubt that the CPD will be-

The Black community and activists are interested to see what kind of report Judge Keys will release in January. According to the ACLU, “Beginning in 2016, Judge Keys and any staff he hires will review the data collected by CPD, conduct a thorough analysis of the data, along with policies, procedures and training practices of CPD, and issue public reports twice a year that assesses the practices and reality of street stops in Chicago. He will also make recommendations for changes in CPD policies and trainings as necessary. The parties agree that Judge Key’s independent reports will provide transparency about how policy changes are working on the street level, and will provide a check on how such policies are working.” Karen Sheley, Senior Staff Counsel at ACLU adds that “beginning in January policemen who stop persons and do not arrest them, must give these persons a receipt that they can then relay to the ACLU.” The CPD has a long way to go before it can be trusted by Black Chicagoans in particular and all Chicagoans in general. This is evident in the recent call for the firing of Superintendent McCarthy by members of the City Council Black Caucus joined by white and Hispanic Aldermen. www.chicagodefender.com

Defender Executive Editor

Be The Change There is much to do about everything. Without question or doubt America is definitely at a crossroads, but then again so is the entire world. It’s as if it’s all caught up with us. The inhumane practices that the world community participates in and then tries to pretend does not exist; from child abuse to child pornography, child molestation, the oppression of women, rape, female circumcision; human trafficking of men, women and children, slavery— the overt prejudice. Racial profiling and systemic institutionalized racism in America; classism throughout Asian cultures, tribalism throughout Africa, racial cleansing in other parts of the world, total disrespect and disregard for all forms of life, the earth, its atmosphere and beyond. Yes, the world is now converging upon itself. Centuries of European and Caucasian dominion over the rest of the world’s people of color, colonizing, oppressing and robbing their lands, discriminating against and stripping their minds and spirit of their riches. Catholicism flooded the world with its belief, brainwashing people to seek salvation through it by confessing their sins to a priest who often abused or took advantage of them. Then under the guise of humanity they offered education only to enslave them even more.

Oppressed people believe that education is their key to freedom. The whole world bought into it— each group of people believing that they’d have the opportunity to sit at the table with the masters. It’s all a part of their indoctrination. The greatest hoax of course being that they have convinced people of color worldwide that they are the minority when in fact there’s nothing minor about us as we outnumber Caucasians. And, if truth be told, can wipe them out genetically without using any weapons. That is the real threat. So here we are in a world where the colonized, who were afforded education, have flocked to the countries that colonized them looking for equal opportunity to exercise their new skills set all the while antagonizing the nationalists. Meanwhile, the five percenters, the puppeteers of the world sit back and watch the game play out as planned. Asian countries have emerged in second and third place behind the United States with Germany in forth place and France in fifth. The United Kingdom comes in sixth place, Brazil in seventh, Italy in eighth, Russia once holding the number two position now holds the ninth position and India places the tenth position as top economies. The distribution of wealth in the world—the inequitable distribution of income is present at the global level where the nominal gross domestic product (GDP) of the top ten economies adds up to 65 percent of the world’s economy, and the top 15 economies add up to 75 percent. The remaining 172 countries constitute only 25 percent of the world’s economy. Clearly there is no Black country close to such growth or acquisition of wealth and yet Africa is one of the riches continents with more resources than any other in the world. Go figure. So this is the monster that we face on all fronts. That is why everyone is struggling to become a five percenter. They present the pictures, flaunt their images and wealth in our faces, the luxury

of it all, the benefits, the easy breezy dreamlike lifestyle, so that everyone will covet and desire to buy into it. This is the very carefully orchestrated strategy from the architects of world domination. Their carefully laid out plans affects everything we do or think. If you think that it’s a coincidence that Black people all over the world are denied access and opportunity then you are mistaken and most likely to fall prey to what is being coined as the new world order — a race-less world where only money and wealth matter to differentiate.

“The architects of our destruction have discovered how to destroy from within.” Race will come to be the mindset — a state of mind rather than the color of one’s skin or cultural distinctions. That’s what has been taking place overtime. What was meant to be integration became assimilation and that is the game changer. When one can assimilate into another person’s culture means that they give up their culture of ethnicty, tribal and religious origin and adopt the cultural philosophy and lifestyle of the colonist and/or oppressor, eventually succombing to that which has taken their soul thus denying them their original self expression. We all see it and witness it. The brothers and sisters who have lost all traces of their historical identity inside while maintaining their ethnic skin and physical features on the outside. The American born Asian who speaks perfect English is overweight and marries White; and of course there is the African who is of British influence, who looks down African Americans, seeks union with

President/Publisher: Cheryl Mainor the European in the pursuit of affluence. Jews though they hate to admit it are facing this problem more often as fewer of each succeeding generation fail to attend the synagogues and marry outside their religion. The architects of our destruction have discovered how to destroy from within. For years they sought to dominate the Black man physically and it did not work because of our spiritual connection to The Most High God. As our connection to God weakened so has our ability to empower ourselves. So here we stand in the midst of chaos. Our children (not all) are unruly, they disrespect our elders, have no decorum, they are lost, have very little compassion or real people skills because they are a generation raised on technology that isolates them from one another and any real intimate interactions. They are confused because after graduation there are so few job opportunities. They have watched the educated generations before them, fall from grace and succumb to menial jobs, or they observe them stay on the job until they’re too old to enjoy retirement because their lifestyle costs. They live in a world riddled with life threatening diseases; a world of treachery, thieves stealing form the poor, and their peers committing mass murders, for 60 seconds of fame. They have observed the world let Africans die of starvation. Watched as little Black African girls were taken by rebels from their homes never to be found and the world stood by and did nothing. They watch as Black lives are shot down, man, woman and child, brutalized as if a piece of dead meat. We witness our communities falling apart from self-disrespect, manifested as drugs and gang violence, as schools are closed, businesses shut down, more liquor stores and store front churches open up as mega churches grow fat and deepens the pockets of the pulpit, all while preaching a new religion of self wealth first

before service to one another. Here in Chicago on our home front we know the reality of all this. We, after all, are the descendants of Robert Abbott Sengsatcke’s call to be self-determined. We hail from those, who heard his voice speak to us to leave the oppression of the South and come north to seek opportunity to be equals even if separate. Black people in Chicago know about hard work and its rewards and its benefits. We also know about the punishment if you are too smart, too successful; too outspoken about your right to be self expressed, self determined but mostly to be accepted as human. We have witnessed the murder of Benjamin Lewis the first Black alderman ever elected for the 24th Ward and Democratic Committee man who won in a landslide election and was shot three times in the back of his head the same night. Black Panther Fred Hampton was murdered in his sleep by Chicago police, Elijah Muhammad’s rebel Imam, Malcolm X, was gunned down in New York as he spoke truth, Martin Luther King Jr., was assassinated because he was uniting the poor; Black and white; we experienced our white colleagues laughing at Harold Washington’s death as we sobbed, and observed Michael Jordon forced to accept his place. So it doesn’t surprise me when those who have risen to the top such as Barbara Byrd-Bennett like a tired old race horse running the race never reaping the windfall of their counterparts fall to the dark side forgetting all that we’ve been taught. She emerged as a raceless person in disguise as Black and gave a good-for-nothing nod to our community and cared even less about our children’s future. It’s time to stop looking outside ourselves. Now is the time to be the change. We hope that you will join us at our town hall meetings where we will convene in our community to hear what’s on your hearts and minds. Stay tuned, we will announce where and when soon. www.chicagodefender.com

Barbara Byrd-Bennett, from Page 2 companies now under indictment along with co-owners Gary Solomon and Thomas Vranas. DPS also awarded more work to PROACT Search, another of Solomon’s and Vranas’ education service companies, to fill five top positions once Byrd-Bennett left that district and became a coach for Synesi and SUPES. Clearly a relationship had been established between she and Solomon/ SUPES. Currently there is an ongoing investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding her Detroit dealings. Byrd-Bennett was criticized for a $40 million contract that the district of about 87,000 students awarded to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt publishers, for whom she had previously worked before Bobb hired her. You see the pattern? Though indicted on 20 counts, Byrd-Bennett pleaded guilty to a single wire fraud charge admitting she hid from CPS a lucrative arrangement with Solomon and Vranas in which she’d steer contracts to them — $23 million total — in exchange for 10 percent that would in part funnel into college funds for her twin grandsons. Prosecutors will recommend a prison sentence based on how fully she cooperates with them, as she has said she will do.

The Solomon Factor

When exactly Byrd-Bennett crossed paths with Gary Solomon is not established but was most likely in Detroit. In August 2009, Solomon wrote in an email, obtained from Detroit’s schools system, to Byrd-Bennett, asking on the advice of a mutual acquaintance to set up a meeting with her there. Solomon informed Byrd-Bennett that he’d be in Detroit in September and wanted to meet with her to chat. Not quite a year later Detroit schools hired Synesi in July 2010 to work with three elementary schools for $760,000, according to the contract. In November 2010, the district dropped two of those schools and added four, under a $3.195 million contract covering five schools. Initially, the district did issue a “request for qualifications,” but the later Synesi deal didn’t require a competitive bid once the state of Michigan approved Synesi as an official “external service provider” for schools that won the grants. Illinois denied that approval to Synesi. Carter, the Detroit school board member, has said that deal was never brought before the board for approval, nor were the others. Another pattern established. After Byrd-Bennett left Michigan, Detroit hired Synesi for another $160,000 to work with one of the same elementary schools. Detroit then gave PROACT a $77,500 contract to fill top district jobs. In 2001, Solomon was forced out of Niles West High School while he was an administrator and social studies teacher there, after his bosses accused him of “immoral and unprofessional” conduct, including allegations he kissed a female student, covered up students’ drug and alcohol use and sent “sexually suggestive” emails to students. He left unable to return to the district. He went into business forming three companies with his now partner, a former student at Niles West while he worked there. The two business partners and all three of their companies are mentioned in federal grand jury subpoenas recently served at CPS. Further, he previously faced allegations he used racial slurs in emails sent while serving as dean, according to documents released by his former employers. In particular, he referred to African Americans using numertous racially offensive terms. And, in a personal journal he kept on a school computer, Solomon described another school administrator as an “uppity n—–,” a lawyer for District 219 alleged, according to the transcript. Of course when asked, Byrd-Bennett, African American, said she was unaware of the allegations against Solomon. But we are inclined to ask did it really matter to her at that point? She has already crossed over to the dark side as a common criminal. She knew going in CPS what the deal was and went in to reap her reward. Like she saidregarding her bonus signing fee with SUPES, “ have www.chicagodefender.com

tuitions to pay and casinos to visit.” Inside information supports that though she may have been a decent person at one time upon her arrival at CPS she was nothing nice and clearly understood what she was doing. Bennett-Byrd came in like any other leadership lining offices with new hires of her choosing carefully crafting loyalty. However according to CD’s Source, she hired many of whom have since been fired after her departure. The Source says and with ‘good riddance.’ As an executive assistant under one of Byrd-Bennett’ chief executives the Source observed much. The new CEO hired Jack Elsey to run the Office of Innovation and Incubation as Chief Innovation and Incubation Officer to ensure that all new schools, schools that are phasing-in additional grades, or growing in programs or student population will receive the support they need to be successful. The formerly known Office of Portfolio reported to the Office of Innovation and Incubation and was to focus on “quality school” support for growth regardless of school operator type. Student enrollment fell under the office and was to work towards a more inclusive enrollment process with more choices for students and families. The office was also expected to bring forward innovative learning strategies to test and pilot throughout the District. The Source says that it became clear that Jack was a figure head hired at $145,000 to provide leadership, which included managing the budget for the Office. His predecessor had been skilled and experienced in what the office called for whereas Jack was younger, and had worked with Byrd-Bennett in Detroit. At Detroit Public Schools, Jack served as Assistant Superintendent. He was one of five new executives that hailed from Broad Residents (BROAD non profit management careers preparing Public education leaders Residents) with whom Byrd was closely affiliated and was also one herself. The plot thickens. The Broad Center operates two leadership development programs: The Broad Academy and the Broad Residency in Urban Education. They partner with Federal, state educational and urban public school districts to come in under contract as leaders to transform their systems into better performing schools. Great! Only one problem. They are a Detroit organization with whom Byrd-Bennett was closely affiliated. Each of her newly hired Broad Residents came in making six figures when the CPS was broke and they in turn hired staff making $80,000 to $95,000 and also issued raises during a time when there was a hiring freeze. The source says, case in point, “Doresah Ford-Bey from Philly was hired as Jack’s executive director at $95,000. Within six months, she went from ninety-five grand to making $145,000 as newly named Deputy Chief. She has since resigned before being fired once Byrd-Bennett took leave. Neither she nor Jack were qualified to handle the budget, one of their chief responsibilities.” The source also witnessed raises distributed and given to those under qualified for certain promotions and those who were deserving were not promoted or given a raise. Ford-Bey hired Dwain Bryant to take (10) CPS interns on his boat for an outing costing $10,000. It was a no bid contract. This was just one of many mismanagement of funds the Source can verify. Also the distinctions made between races as raises were concerned were quite transparent. This was done even after Byrd Bennett hired Mercer to establish parity across the board. All this the Source says, “Byrd Bennett knew.” “This failure to quality for what the Broad Residents were hired was consistent and to take the spotlight off their inability, was corrected by hiring a consultant group who then provided guidance for Byrd-Bennett’s new executive team,” says the source. “Further,” says The Source, “Neither Jack or Byrd-Bennett ever, not once while I was employed for them did they meet with the African American parents of charter school students. They would schedule a meeting and then the day before or day of cancel.” This they did time and time again according the to the Source even

though the majority of the students that were put out of the charter schools were Black. Finally, the Source says that their office was a marriage only in name that they did little to accomplish or come close to what it was suppose to do because none of the staff was appropriately qualified. So was Byrd Bennett ever an Angel? You decide. Even though she has apologized saying that, “The Chicago people deserved better.” Truth is Barbara Byrd-Bennett, ‘The Race’ — We know better. We are not to join the thugs, hoodlums, corporate raiders and any other type of bad

guys especially where our children are concerned. Never under any circumstances. She willingly became a common criminal like the Wesley Snipes character, Nino Brown, in “New Jack City,” destroying young lives and with them our community. Her fall from grace leaves a legacy that damaged the window of opportunity for future racial parity/ for someone Black to move into that powerful position as CPS CEO and abused public education in Chicago more specifically she’s robbed our children harming their future.

NATIONAL NEWS

Common Weighs in on Art, Music & the End of Violence Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer For the past three years, Chicago Ideas Week has produced a week of special discussions that revolve around sharing ideas, inspiring action and igniting change to positively impact society. Chicago Ideas Week kicked off with a bang last week as Grammy/Oscar award winning songwriter and artist, Common, participated in one of the opening programs to launch the anti-violence music video, “Put the Guns Down.” The song was produced by fellow Chicago native and producer, Anthony ‘The Twilite Tone’ Khan and featured other Chicago notable rap artists—Lil Herb, King Louie, Katie Got Bandz, Tree, Saba, NoName Gypsy, Nick Jr., and Mic Terror of Treated Crew. Partnering with Leo Burnett Ad Agency to bring awareness to the rising gun violence that continues to plague neighborhoods across the city, CIW presented a panel discussion, “Keeping the Peace: Music, Art & the End of Violence.” The discussion was moderated by CNN reporter, Marc Lamont Hill and included Common, Anthony ‘The Twilite Tone’ Khan, Nina Vinik, Program Director of The Joyce Foundation and Monica Haslip-Executive Director of Little Black Pearl Art and Design Academy. This particular panel discussion brought out a nearly sold out audience which included young students and parents that lost their children to gun violence, who were also featured in the music video. Opening up the program was CIW Executive Director, Jessica Malkin, who shared statistics on the latest homicides and shootings in the Chicago area. Followed by Marc Lamont Hill who segued comfortably into his role as the host and moderator, introducing Chicago young talents; Chima Ikona and Jalen Kobayashi of the spoken word group, Louder Than a Bomb. Sculptor, Garland Martin Taylor presented a

visual presentation of his art piece, a 380lb. stainless steel gun which has the names of those whose lives were taken by gun violence. As the program continued, Common was invited onstage for a one-on-one conversation with Hill as he explained the importance of staying true to his artistry and philanthropic efforts. “It started with my mother, because she’s been an educator since I was born. Seeing her as a teacher go the extra mile, not only with me, but with other students. I felt that is what you’re supposed to do as a human being – each one, teach one. If you have a big loaf of bread and you see someone who don’t have any food—you have to look out,” Common said. “Just my belief in God, made me feel that I have to give back. One of the best ways to give back is to go directly to the youth and ask them, ‘What do you all need?’” Both Common and Anthony “The Twilite Tone” Khan grew up on the South Side of Chicago so participating on this project wasn’t just another production—it struck a personal chord. Khan explained his process, “We need to get out of our comfort zone which is why “Put the Guns Down” was produced. At first it was supposed to be a PSA or commercial. I said, we have to make this full song and not just Common the ‘kumbaya’ rappers. We need the dudes that make the soundtrack for the dudes that are doing the killing,” said Khan. Knowing the state of gun violence and agitation in the streets, Hill turned to Common and questioned should artist have a moral responsibility to produce music that uplifts and not ignite violence? Not endorsing his young colleagues lifestyle, Common also felt it was important not to suppress the creative flow as an artist. “Art is about expression, it’s about telling your story and using your imagination which you can be inspired by different things.”

Cricket Wireless Offers Halloween Safety Tips for the Whole Family Eleana Elan Defender Contributing Writer With Halloween around the corner, comes the ritual of costumes, carvings and handfuls of candy! Though Halloween is a national holiday celebrated across the U.S., years of unforgiveable “tricks” have made us proceed with caution. The holiday is one in which children are the focus and the idea is to have fun as they gather treats. Unfortunately they have been the target, at times of people behaving badly. So with every bit of trick-or-treat fun, we must remember to keep safety first. Many parents have given their children cell phones to stay connected in case of an emergency. It’s a good time for parents to talk with their trick-or-treaters about safety. Take time to teach them useful safety features on their devices in case of an emergency. Below are some tips and apps to make Halloween safe and fun for the whole family. 1. Use your cellphone as a flashlight • Keeping your trick-or-treaters safe as darkness falls is equally as important as ensuring Halloween fun for all. Free flashlight applications (apps) for iPhone and Android devices use the LED light on smartphones and fill your screen with bright white light to illuminate the dark. Some even include fully customizable special effects including Strobe Light, Trippy, S.O.S., YinYang, Halloween, Candy Hearts, Holiday Lights and more. 2. Keep track of your children while they’re on the go • A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children trick-or-treating. Older children should go in groups and agree on a time when they should return home. For extra safety precaution, parents can track their children via the Life360 or GPS Phone Tracker Pro apps, which allows family members to alert one another when they’ve arrived at a destination, follow each other’s movements with minute-by-minute updates and real-time check-ins.

3. Mobile Device Tips • Pre-program one-touch dial emergency phone numbers in your child’s device in case of emergency. These numbers should include parents, 911, grandparents, trusted friend or neighbor. • Inform them not to respond or send personal information to numbers they don’t recognize • If your child’s cell phone has access to the internet, find out if your service provider offers some sort of parental control feature to which you can subscribe Now that cellphone safety tips have been laid out for your children and tweens, below are a few additional safety measures parents should keep in mind for a fun and safe trick-or-treating experience: • Buy costumes and wigs labeled “flame resistant.” • Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you. • Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers. • Go only to well-lit houses, remain on porches rather than entering houses and stay in familiar neighborhoods. NATIONAL NEWS Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer Along with most of the stories and recaps of the 20th Anniversary of the Million Man March in Washington, D.C. featuring positive images of our community coming together—there were also some poignant points that peaked my interest. Throughout the National Mall, various speakers on jumbo screens delivered their messages of peace, unity and justice for all. For those that viewed the program from the convenience of their homes on C-Span, it felt like a never ending program of speeches and self-proclamations in a new era of civil rights. In the midst of being in one of the most acclaimed and historical moments in my time, I felt something was missing—I just couldn’t put my hand on it. Since most of us arriving in the heart of Washington, D.C. traveled by the Metra and many by charter bus—we were entering the National Mall grounds by foot. Immediately, people were greeted by merchants, some with legal permits—many others without. Buttons, t-shirts, magnets, flags, key chains, pencils and pens—all sporting the theme of ‘Justice or Else’ or ‘Million Man March’. Every fifty feet, people were greeted by the hustle of merchandising before landing on the grass to find a place to enjoy the line-up of speakers and performances. Groups of people from various places, wearing uniform t-shirts with their schools’ organizations and causes emblazoned on their chest. You could feel the energy of these groups showing the necessity of being there to represent their interests. Still something was missing. The theme of “Justice or Else” established by Minister Louis Farrakhan as a cry emphasizing the importance of Black lives, in a climate where the legal system has failed us in finding reprimand from police injustices across the board. The poster child of this movement was not one person or one group—it was a multitude of families who lost loved ones at the hands of suspicion and foul play. They all gathered together arriving in town to push the agenda of the anniversary theme, holding up poster sized photos of their slain so that they are not forgotten. The line-up of speakers on the program were familiar faces championing the rights of African-Americans: from Dr. Ben Chavis, Congressman Danny Davis (IL), Mayor of Washington, D.C. Murial Bowser, organizers of Black Lives Matter, the Justice League and Hands Up. A slew of speakers and activists from the Native Indian and Hispanic communities and faith leaders from various denominations abounded. It was a different type of vibe, each speaker stirring up their own interpretation of “Justice or Else” and why it was so important that people of color gather together in numbers.

Passing The Torch: The Million Man Recap brought their children after sharing their first historical trip as youth themselves during the original Million Man March twenty years ago. Although, the first march had the largest turnout of one million attendees— baby boomers and post-era Civil Rights activists making history, this second wave of the march brought out less of the original attendees. Upon recognizing some familiar faces that graced the stage on Capitol Hill, we also didn’t see a great deal of African American leaders from: Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., Rev. Al Sharpton, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Congressman Bobby L. Rush and U.S. Senator Cory Booker amongst a list of notable faces that were present for the first march. We can easily claim this march wasn’t about them or the spotlight—this march was about the ‘people’ and powered by the Nation of Islam. But, in an age where power lies in how many ‘views’, ‘likes’ and ‘clicks’, the regular presence of our usual suspects didn’t go unnoticed on such a historical day.

to serve, you have to protect yourself. You can’t expect no one else to love you more than you. That means ‘Or Else’ is totally up to you. What are you willing to sacrifice so that your child is willing to have a life? Let’s take Christmas from Santa Claus and give it back to Christ.”

As a representative of Black Lives Matter and a group of her peers stood by proudly pumping their fists in the air, it gradually started to dawn on me what was missing—the importance of our next generation. As I walked into the thick of the crowd, beyond the metal detectors that allowed entry into the Capitol Hill grounds—there was an energy that could not be captured on the television screens. Young people were in high numbers, many had traveled to the nation’s capitol for the very first time to congregate. Many had never traveled beyond their hometown to be a part of history because when will they be able to witness large numbers of Black people gather in one place in their lifetime? Young adults who weren’t born yet, some the offspring of first generation Million Yes, the 20th Anniversary Million Man March Man March attendees. was a historical day. A day that despite the lowChicago natives, Jonah Jackson, 19 and his key coverage that many media outlets down cousin, Akim Chatman, both traveled with other played as just another ‘sound bite’ still brought out family members to the march. They decided to a large number of Black people in a positive and raise funds for their church with an entrepreneurial communal setting. Man March, I heard there was a lot of unity and it was a time when Black people were together. There wasn’t as much violence between us.” The spirit of curiosity and intrigue is what brought so many young adults in making the journey to Washington, D.C. for the anniversary of the march. Twenty years ago it was about hope

and making a stand—today’s youth see it another way. “Being from Chicago, it’s hard to get this many Black people together with this much peace. Minister Farrakhan is a role model and he knows how to get people together in a peaceful way. With all of the chaotic things that is happening in Chicago, this is a great way of getting us together. You can’t reach everyone but for the ones that do get the message, it helps us,” Chatman said. With many lives taken by a racist and broken legal system flooded with police brutality and corruption, the ghost of Emmett Till rings out in each family that has lost a loved one. To the families of Rekia Boyd, Sandra Bland, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin and many others, “Justice or Else” represented their continual fight in making sure their loved ones lives still mattered. Standing in uniformity with the other families, Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayon Martin wore a red t-shirt. As the others joined her on the Capitol Hill steps, holding up pictures of their loved ones, she said, “This is about knowing that we are not three fifths of a human. We have feelings, and we have families too. We will not continue to stand by and not say anything anymore. We will speak up and speak out. God is watching what is going on and I say to the families that are standing in front of me, ‘Don’t hold your head down as if your child’s life has been lost in vain, hold your head up high. Your child was not the person that shot and killed someone else. Your child was murdered. Stand up for who you are.’” With so much centered around marketing, branding and hashtag themes--”Justice or Else” became the hashtag to peak the interests of many seeking some type of change. As Minister Louis Farrakhan’s speech rang throughout the nation’s capitol that day, it was clear that at the age of 82, his ability to pull ‘rock star’ numbers is still undisputed. The numbers may have not been as high as the march in 1995, but much has occurred between then and now. We still have a great deal of work to accomplish. This march wasn’t about a sound bite on CNN or having a network which hasn’t been Black owned since 2000 to broadcast in every household—this was about passing the torch. As the Minister stood there behind the bulletproof glass podium with the protection of his security detail on every corner of the stage— he soaked in the view of thousands of attendees across the National Mall. He acknowledged the young female organizers behind Black Lives Matter, “I love my sister and those standing with her who champion the cause of Black Lives Matter. To hear her and for her to know that she and Black Lives Matter are welcomed. They represent the future leadership.” Torched passed.

The Million Man March revisited was a shadow of what it was 20 years ago when Black men across the United States sojourned, rich, poor, tall, short, educated, uneducated, light, dark, young and old came together under the pretense of protest but more importantly to proclaim their united front as one. It was a call to eradicate the negative images and convey to the world a vastly different picture of the Black ‘male’ and to unite in self-help and self-defense against economic and social ills plaguing the African American community. An estimated 850,000 African American men from across the United States gathered together at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to rally in one of largest demonstrations in Washington history. This assembly of Black men hosted by the Nation of Islam leader Minister Louis Farrakhan was organized by The National African American Leadership Summit, led by Dr. Benjamin Chavis, Jr. who served as National Director of the Million Man March. The Nation of Islam worked with scores of civil rights organizations including many local chapters of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (but not the national NAACP) that formed the Million Man March organizing committee. Minister Farrakhan called for all able-bodied African American men to come to the nation’s capital to address the ills of Black communities and called for unity and revitalization of their communities. Besides the keynote address by Minister Louis Farrakhan, several prominent speakers addressed those gathered at the Washington Mall including civil rights activists Benjamin Chavis, Jesse Jackson, Rosa Parks, and Dick Gregory. Stevie Wonder entertained the gathering with his songs while Maya Angelou used her poetry to offer advice to the men at the rally. The message of most of the speeches called for black men to “bring the spirit of God back into your lives.” These marchers were also encouraged to register to vote to build black political power. Million Man March, 2015, wore a different mask. Mixed with Native American, Hispanic and others, the mix and feel was very different. Upon stepping onto the mall grounds one had to ask oneself had they arrived at the MMM or the Million Man Flea Market as rows of vendors stood armed with memorabilia marketing the event’s name and date. Somehow it resonated like cheap perfume. The vendors were white, Black, Hispanic and whomever had purchased a booth.

Also in eyesight were teepees, and people who looked different than Black men. There were women, Native Americans and Hispanics who were also represented at the podium addressing Black men/people at the Million Man March. The point is, what was the Minister trying to accomplish? It was not the Million Man March many envisioned. Missing were all those iconic Black Male figures and organizations important to the movement. Where was Rev, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Dick Gregory, Andrew Young, Sydney Poitier, Harry Belafonte or Dr. Conrad Worill who hails from Chicago? Though there was a call to connect and work with other people of color against injustice there seemed to be a major portion of the “meaningful something” missing.

James Murray Jackson Jr. as Richard Pryor.

The Creators “Unspeakable”

Talk About the Life of Richard Pryor Mary L. Datcher

Defender Senior Staff Writer The world of entertainment comes with some pretty heavy burdens but most artists trying to enter into this world only recognizes the benefits and not the drawbacks. Richard Pryor was considered a genius in his transition from the cool, squeaky clean comic serving up rated G jokes into his darker side which was uncensored and raw. His personal and professional life played out on the stage and big screen giving the world a glimpse of his inner demons that was made into a biopic ‘Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life is Calling’ in 1986. Almost 10 years after his death from a long struggle with Multiple Sclerosis and suffering from a fatal heart attack, a dramatic play has been created about his life called, Unspeakable. Inspired by the comedian’s life, co-author and director Rod Gailes and leading actor James Murray Jackson, Jr., have assembled an ensemble cast of ten actors playing multiple roles. The play is receiving rave reviews in its five-week limited engagement at the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place currently running October 6th - November 8th 2015. Both Gailes and Jackson worked together on a previous show years ago when they first started out in the business. Gailes, a film school graduate was soon working with director Spike Lee and had the pleasure of meeting Lee’s Creative Consultant, Susan Batson. Some of her clients, at the time, included Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise leading an array of A-list clients. One day Gailes recommended that Jackson attend an acting class headed up by Batson. “While I was studying with Susan Batson, one of the things we had to do was to create a character in our class called “Developing Your Own Method.” In that class, she said that I should write a play about Richard Pryor. I hadn’t written anything like a play at that time. I went to Ron and told him I had a thought. I want to do something about Richard Pryor,” said Jackson. Gailes had some earlier reservations about creating a one-man show. “At the time we started developing this, it had been done to death. Whoopi had really put her imprint on some things and John Legazamo also did the same act. But I was interested in doing an ensemble with Richard Pryor in the center of it,” Gailes said. “sort of paint the picture of the world of the people around him, producing an ensemble that would support and surround him in the center. That’s how we started working on it.” With a talented ensemble cast that in12 Oct. 21 - Oct. 27, 2015 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

cludes Chicago natives E. Faye Butler (Working, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike), Lamar N. Barnes, Ebony Joy, Akilah Perry and Ronald L. Conner (King Hedley II). It brings a great platform for Chicago talent to be nurtured right here at home. Unspeakable also features Taryn Reneau (Much Ado About Nothing, The Taming of the Shew), Chris Amos (Both Your House, Tom Jones), Kierra Bunch (The Sun Always Shines for The Cool) and Ginneh Thomas (The Submission). The story of the legendary comic was more than sex, drugs and comedy—it’s described as an unflinching ride through the emotional landscape of Richard Pryor’s sixty-one years focusing on the period between 1967 and 1982. Growing up as children of the 1970s, both men can remember sneaking away to listen to their parent’s comedy albums and Pryor was included in the stack. With much research, Jackson found himself at the New York Performing Arts Library at Lincoln Center and the Television and Radio Museum, compiling newspaper and magazine clips from Ebony and Jet. “You get a lot from his comedy that was fascinating. For example, I know that he shot the car but why did he shoot the car? That information is not in the world because we don’t know exactly what happened but it allowed us to go to a place of creativity to imagine what that would be like,” he said. Gailes adds, “If Richard had came along five or ten years before, he wouldn’t have been able to get away with saying what he said. It was a time of political, social and revolutionary change. He was changing his focus from a Cosby clone to developing his own voice. In that late 1960’s period when he was turning into the Richard we came to know, that was the perfect intersection for social change,” Gailes said. “Richard was working to push the boundaries forward. That’s what made him different from other people.” As African American men, they feel showcasing such an important story in an unapologetic way and to a mainstream audience—is exactly how the comedic icon would have done it. What can Pryor fans and people coming to see Unspeakable expect to take from the play? “James channels the energy and spirit of Richard. That’s a special thing to be able to do. He might not be likable but he was outrageously charming and through all of the works that he did, he was able to connect with people. James as an actor embodies this—the audience are the riders and he is the conductor.” www.chicagodefender.com

ENTERTAINMENT Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer The breast cancer rate in the African American community was at 62 percent higher in Chicago’s low income neighborhoods versus more affluent areas of the region. In the African American community, it continues to be a major concern of health awareness, education and prevention. This month is recognized as Breast Cancer Month with pink being the official color of recognition throughout most parts of the world. Susan G. Komen is the world’s largest breast cancer organization, funding more breast cancer research than any other nonprofit while providing real-time help to those facing the disease. Just recently, Susan G. Komen held a roundtable discussion in Chicago aimed at improving breast cancer outcomes for African-American women. The discussion included patients, survivors, clinicians, business, academic, community and faith leaders as well as government officials. This is the fourth of ten planned roundtables that are taking place around the country. It’s CEO, Dr. Judy Salerno was in town to meet many of the people that

are instrumental in getting the message out to the community. “Chicago had one of the greatest disparities in breast cancer outcomes. Komen has invested in over $2 million in specific disparities work with Metropolitan Chicago Breast Task Force so we’ve made real strives,” Salerno said. “We have so much work to be done because there are still issues with inequity in this town. We understand that everyone should be entitled with the highest quality care available regardless of where they live in the city or where they live in our country or where they live around the world.” With the help of the Chicago Metropolitan Breast Cancer Task Force, the program has helped narrow the gap within our communities since 2007. Both Komen’s $1 million grant and additional assistance by the Avon Foundation has allowed the organization to focus on the quality of care needed for patients to receive the best care possible. Dr. Sheri Prentiss is the national spokesperson for the Komen 3-Day 60 mile walk and a breast cancer survivor. She isn’t the typical model of someone who’s not health conscious, doesn’t exercise or lives below the poverty line. An occupational and environmental physician, Prentiss did everything right—going

Educate and Improve Breast Cancer Outcomes for African-American Women for yearly mammogram check-ups and making sure she stayed fit and in shape. In 2008, all of this changed as she noticed a lump in her right breast through

a self-examination. She was diagnosed with breast cancer months after her mammogram showed it was clean—with 15 rounds of chemotherapy, a partial mastectomy, and 33 radiation treatments later—she decided to participate in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day walk. As a national spokesperson for the Komen 3-Day walk, the importance of prevention and awareness is crucial in delivering the message—the right way. “I had no significant risk factors and I was 40 at the time. No history of breast cancer in my family, but yet and still, I’m a survivor. I think it’s important for women and men to see me and hear my story to appreciate that breast cancer knows no limits. No age limits, or health status,” Prentiss said. “As a physician and as a patient, I spend the rest of my days educating and making people aware that there are tools that are available to them that can save their lives. If you think that your children, mom, dad will be okay if you die. Not so—it’s a domino effect. Why would you allow yourself half of your life because either you’re afraid or you don’t have the support. Support is there.” In attendance, Illinois Congressional Representative, Robin Kelly was on hand to show her support and the need

to get the necessary education available for Black women in our communities. She shared with the intimate group of women that the disease runs in her family with both grandmothers having had breast cancer. “Too many African-American women are dying. I represent the Chicagoland area—the urban, rural and suburban areas but in the Chicagoland region, the rate is higher than the average. We definitely need to focus on that. Women are the backbone of our communities. This affects our communities, losing our women to breast cancers. This affects our moms, sisters, aunts, grandmothers—we could do better.” Released in September, The Kelly Report emphasize the critical necessity of passing funding to support education, prevention and awareness of breast cancer to drive down these alarming numbers gripping the African-American community. Kelly said, “I want to make sure the funding goes where it’s needed, then I want to work with organizations, educating the population. That’s very important because you can have the funding and the access. If you don’t go and get the screenings, follow up with your treatment, or maintain a healthy lifestyle then it doesn’t matter if the funding is there.”

Raymond Anthony Thomas Candace Hunter Defender Contributing Writer Last year, this time, the Chicago Defender appointed Ms. Kai El’Zabar as its new Executive Editor. Anxious to see how her adopted city had changed during her hiatus away from Chicago, she and I hit the Art scene. It was October after all, the month celebrated in our city as “Artists Month”. After visiting shows at Chicago Art Department (CAD), Gallery Guichard and Faie Afrikan Art in Bronzeville, she remarked on how incredible this was – to live in a city that deliberately and unabashedly celebrates the Arts for an entire month EVERY year! I had to agree. This year marks the 20th Anniversary of Chicago’s “All Things Art”. This year, the theme is THE CITY AS STUDIO. There is so much to do and see, from dancing in our neighborhoods, alley installations, concerts everywhere, to the best visual art ever! So much to do, to see. We thought that we’d give you a few prime shows not to miss! CAM celebrates the City as Studio from October 1 – November 15, 2015.

If Mr. Robert S. Abbott, the founder of the Chicago Defender, was still alive, he would be the first patron of this show, pumping the hand of curator and conceiver,

Makeba Kedem-Dubose. Ms. Dubose, by sheer will, decided that this was the year that her efforts would be one of the featured exhibits at Chicago Artists Month. And, so it is. Pulling together the talents of 22 Black artists who all are part of the 110 member strong Collaborative Mavericks she has assembled an amazing show that “flips the script on the racial and artistic implications of the term “black and white.” Its usage in the show’s title is not a reference to race, but a description of the graphic appearance of the works: black and white are the only colors in the pictorial (or structural) plain.” rtist Talk, Sunday, A November 1 at Noon Show runs through 11/06/15. There are so many exhibits and activities during October and early in November. Visit the Chicago Artists Month website for a full list. discomfort, no discharge—there was nothing to make me think I had breast cancer.” But there she was facing the news.

Defender Contributing Writer

Back in 2013, Angelina Jolie startled the world by announcing in a NYT op-ed that she had both of her breasts removed to prevent cancer because she had been found to have a specific BRCA1 mutation that results in a high risk of cancer. Jolie informed us that her decision to have both breasts removed was predicated on the fact that her physician told her that she had a 50% lifetime risk of ovarian cancer. Since then others have thought differently about their journey to rid themselves of cancer; what that looks like and what it means to them post breast cancer. Before Angelina there was a brave young Black woman living in Atlanta, who made the choice to go breastless. Shondia McFadden Shabari, a wife and mother of two, who made the choice in 2011 to have both breasts removed after being diagnosed with breast cancer. She met her strength along the journey to recovery. Her story began early December 2010, when most people are busy preparing for the Christmas holidays. One day she received an instruction, in her words she heard her inner voice or as she

“I had two different types of stage 0 cancer in my right breast, which were DCIS, non-invasive malignant cells in the breast ducts, and LCIS, which are pre-cancerous cells indicative of a higher risk of breast cancer. In my left breast, the cancer was all DCIS including an area that was a more advanced stage 1A near a blood vessel. The stage 1A diagnosis meant that the disease was progressing but thankfully had not spread outside of my breast. The cancer didn’t cause me any physical pain, but it sure did scare the hell out of me,” she recalls.

later, December 23, two days before Christmas, she was diagnosed with breast cancer in both breasts. She says, “As a 36-year-old married, devoted mother of two, the news was devastating and shocking to all of us. I had no lumps, no

She made the decision to have both breast removed a week before her surgery and on February 11, 2011 during a bilateral mastectomy, they were removed. After spending countless hours researching this disease and meeting with experts, she decided that breasts removal was the best course of action for her. She says, “Having both breasts removed was a personal decision I made to decrease the likelihood of reoccurrence. I didn’t want to spend year after year worrying about the possibility of the cancer coming back. I wanted this thing to be behind me for good.” She made an even bolder step that most women would balk at. “After my surgery, I decided not to do reconstructive surgery or wear breast forms. I’m confident and very proud of myself that I’m bold enough to show other women that if they get a mastectomy, it’s okay to buy more breasts or wear prosthesis, but it’s also okay if you don’t do any of that.” Like many who have faced life threatening or life altering traumas, Shondia McFadden-Sabari expresses her peace, “I’m so thankfulthat I didn’t have to do chemotherapy or radiation. Being alive is all that really matters,” she adds, “Additionally, my onco type dx score was a 7. In the bible, 7 means completion! Therefore, I will continue to thank God everyday, www.chicagodefender.com

Donna Battle Pierce

Defender Contributing Writer I was a new bride, living in San Francisco, when I returned to Mobile to visit my grandmother and show her all the improvements I had learned to make on the Creole recipes that had been passed down in our family for generations. “Who needs green peppers when the choice is almost endless,” I remember saying as she sat with a puzzled expression after sampling a forkful of jambalaya prepared with red and purple versions instead of the green bell pepper for which I had long ago learned to revere (with celery and onion) as an important element to the Creole culinary trinity. “We cook with green peppers. That’s our heritage,” my grandmother had said sternly, with a

look I can only describe as profoundly upset and disap pointed enough to cause me to follow the directions she added later for several decades since. Recently, I thought about Granny’s words when I used a paring knife to add a playful table decoration to these delicious stuffed peppers made with the colorful last batch from my favorite farmers market that’s about to close until next year. “Anything called Creole” needs the flavor sparkle of green bell peppers, Granny had said. “Enjoy those other peppers that sweeten into other hues, but only use them for decoration.”

for completely healing my body and for allowing me to be cancer free.” Further discussion with Shondia McFadden-Sabari reveals that she had the surgery because from her position she didn’t want to put herself through anything unnecessary. She needed the cancer to be out of her body and the ordeal over. In her mind the breasts she had were cancerous and after thinking long and hard determined that she didn’t need more breasts or prosthesis!” Shondia McFadden is a poster girl for having a brave attitude and how to deal with the news of being diagnosed with breast cancer. She says, “I was never depressed or angry and I never will be! I’m on a mission to inspire others that are affected by cancer. I want women to see hope when they www.chicagodefender.com

see me and hear my story. Hope that there is life after breast cancer. Hope that you can still be you and even a better you after breast cancer surgery. Hope that women everywhere will do what they need to do to take care of their bodies.”

1 1/2 to 2 cups cooked rice 3 yellow bell peppers, halved lengthwise, seeded, stem intact if possible 3 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 small onion, finely chopped 3/4 cup chopped button mushrooms 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh or frozen turnip greens, kale or collards 1 clove garlic minced 1 to 2 tablespoons Creole or soul seasoning Freshly ground pepper 1/2 cup halved plum or cherry tomatoes 1 cup finely shredded Cheddar, Swiss or mixed cheese

2 tablespoons pitted kalamata olive, halved, optional 3/4 cup crushed cracker crumbs

She says, it helps that my family was supportive and that my husband is a happily married man and he’s still in love with me!

Place the leftover rice in a medium bowl; use your fingers or a fork to separate any grains that have come together during refrigeration. Set aside to come to room temperature, about 20 minutes.

Her experience was the catalyst to her organization, Bold & Breastless a movement that uplifts breast cancer survivors and shares resources through outreach and advocacy. Currently it is planning a national speaking tour soon to help get the word out. In the meantime, you can find and interact with Bold and Breastless on Facebook.

Heat the remaining olive oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion. Cook, stirring with a wooden spoon until onions just begin to soften, about 2 minutes. Stir in the mushrooms; cook, stirring, 2 more minutes. Add the garlic; cook 1 minute more. Remove from heat. Stir in the Creole seasoning and freshly ground pepper.

Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the pepper halves on a foil covered baking sheet; brush the foil lightly with olive oil. Set aside.

Stir the warm onion and mushroom mixture into the rice. Add the tomato halves and most of the shredded cheese, reserving 3 tablespoons of cheese for the topping before the final broiling. Use a wooden spoon or dinner tablespoon to stuff the peppers gently with the filling. Bake until the pepper shells begin to soften and the cheese melts into rice, about 20 minutes. Remove from oven; dust the top of each pepper half lightly with cracker crumbs and about 1/2 tablespoon of the shredded cheese. Heat the broiler to high; broil the stuffed peppers watching carefully to remove as soon as the cheese topping melts. Makes 6 pepper halves.

with knowledge about the disease to help make the right decisions for yourself during such a critical time in your life. As always the innovative Ms. Bates is pioneering the movement to support breast cancer research for women of color through fashion. “Knocking Out Breast Cancer” is not just another fashion show. All the models are survivors of breast cancer or are currently battling the disease. In an effort to meet her commitment to Mount Sinai, Ms. Bates has taken a ‘grassroots’ approach to reach the community folks. So earlier this year the Foundation hosted their second Annual 5k Walk-Run called “Walk Where You Live,” that contributed an additional $25K to this year’s efforts. Additionally, committee members have raised funds on the job, through special fundraising events and by collecting spare change. Team members even worked for tips at local restaurants most notably Truth Italian Restaurant on Pershing St. Ms. Bates, says “Through my experiences I learned that breast cancer does not have a type and it can strike anyone despite their race, age, size or even family history.” The fashion designer and founder of The Barbara Bates Foundation, says, “I am humbled by the success we’ve had to date in raising these funds and excited about meeting our fundraising commitment to Sinai after this year’s KOBC Fashion Show.” “We are grateful for our partnership with the Barbara Bates Foundation”, said Karen Teitelbaum, Sinai Health System president and CEO. “It is a powerful grassroots commitment to fight breast cancer in our community. We look forward to this year’s event.”
