Yesterday, another family laid their young child to rest as mourners stood outside of Saint Sabina Church watching the glass encased, black carriage pull up with the small casket inside. The death of Tyshawn Lee has sparked an onslaught of concern from the community regarding the never-ending cycle of violence on the streets of Chicago. Monday afternoon, November 2nd, the life of the 9-year old boy was taken, execution style, right beside his grandmother’s home in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood. At the time, it was reported as another senseless act of murder, with heartless gangbangers taking a young life; but the story has developed into something much more ominous, much more evil. According to Chicago Police Superindent, Garry McCarthy, Tyshawn’s father, Pierre Stokes, is alleged to have been embroiled in a gang feud with a rival family for a while. The result of this madness, is the lifeless little body of an innocent little black boy. This same gruesome scenario continues to unfold over and over, like a scene from the movie, “Groundhog Day”, but in each case, the victim is different. The victims are young and the bullets are real. Parents often clutch their chests once they hear the tragic news of their child’s senseless murder. Parents not too much older than their children, still finding their way in life. The tragedy of these homicides are ignited by groups of cliqued factions of what were larger organized gangs of the past. Growing up in Chicago, whether you resided on the West Side, South Side or parts of the North Side—it was understood which gang organizations had claim to the area. There was an unspoken code of ethics—civilians that included seniors and children were off

limits. Although, many innocent lives were still taken between the crossfire of gang warfare, people were conscious of the rules of engagement. This new generation of gun-totting, block-trotting, half dazed gang bangers have no awareness of codes. Founder of United In Peace, Wallace ‘Gator’ Bradley said, “The individuals that are engaged in killing the children are individuals who are in violation of that code. I want to make that straight and clear because it seems like the media is trying to give the perception like the African-American community is so insensitive,” he said. “We’re not standing back quietly and I’m tired of hearing that because this is not true. That is one of the reasons why Congressman Bobby Rush went to meet with Larry Hoover and Jeff Fort. To get their concerns and also to put their concerns out there as a part of the equation of the total solution – everyone has to play a part.” As community residents drive through local streets with their windows up and doors locked, many young men are still hanging on building stoops in groups. Some of them are often congregating in the middle of the block to avoid the suspicion of holding down their corner. Always begging the question--’Where are the parents?’. Surely, there had to be a mother and father in order to birth the children who have grown up to walk our streets at night and mostly after curfew. Both, young Black females and males feeling the freedom of hanging out and cussing under the windows of many neighborhood residents too scared to chastise them for fear of retaliation. The Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center is currently home to approximately 250-300 young inmates. Some are repeat offenders for mi-

nor crimes but others are awaiting trial with the possibility of being prosecuted as an adult. There is a cycle of juvenile arrests according to the Chicago Youth Justice Data Project report, the total number of juvenile arrests for 17 and under, in 2013, was 21,496 and it decreased by over 17 percent, in 2014, with 17,783 arrests. While Blacks represent 37% of the 0-17 youth population, they accounted for over 79% of juvenile arrests in Chicago in 2013 and 2014. Cook County State’s Attorney candidate, Kim Foxx feels the current criminal justice system can make it difficult for youth with economic disparities. She calls it the ‘school to prison’ pipeline. “We arrest more kids in low income neighborhoods from the schoolhouse for fighting which is a felony. When I was coming up, if a fight broke out—you didn’t call the cops. Now, we have such low expectations for our students so we pick up the phone to have the police handcuff them, fingerprint and mug shot them. This is because you don’t see the value in that child,” Foxx said. “What does this do for the psyche? We’re setting up paths of failure for our kids because we don’t feel they are worth the investment.” Foxx said that “the lack of expectations that we put on our children can result in no accountability for their actions. The pressure on teachers and school faculty to fill in where parents should, is taxing on them, and can lead to low academic performance without the help of a solid support system.” See Our Kids, Our parents, Page 7

go on strike. Lewis has asked parents and the community to prepare for what she thinks will be a “protracted strike” in the spring of next year.

Defender Contributing Writer

A 14 year old young man was shot outside of Bowen High School last Thursday! The Chicago Police Department now believe that 9 year old Tyshawn Lee was lured into an alley after leaving school and fatally shot several times! According to a recent report from the University of Chicago in DNAinfo News, “About one in five African-American young adults say they have experienced gun violence in the past year.” This includes threats, harassment, being shot, or knowing someone who was shot. The Chair of the Political Science Department at the University of Chicago, Cathy Cohen’s research of Black millennials supports the conclusions of this study that these youngsters are too often confronted with violence. Black children, while confronted by violence going to and from school, are now confronted with the possibility of further school closures, teacher layoffs, a CPS budget crisis, a raging controversy concerning standardized testing, and a possible teachers’ strike. The Chicago Board of Education is now reporting that some “15 Chicago public high schools,” in primarily Black communities, “were less than onethird filled by the 20th day of classes this year,” according to the Chicago Tribune. The prime example of these underused schools is Hirsch High School on the south side, which has 1,080 seats in the building but only 150 students enrolled, to Marshall on the west side with only 425 students in a building that has the capacity for 1,656 students. Obviously, under-enrolled school buildings present problems for CPS. Event more tragically, it presents a set of major problems for the Black

When Black children are now confronted with this combination of deep and complex problems, what answers can we offer them and their parents? How does the Black community collectively respond to this crisis? Will the Black community support the teachers’ union? Will the Black community demand a total shake up of the Board of Education and an elected board?

WHAT IS HAPPENING TO

OUR CHILDERN’S PUBLIC EDUCATION?

community. The Board is now contemplating the closure and/or merger of many of these underused schools maybe as early as next year. The Board argues that it cannot continue to keep these schools open with such severe underuse. Parents understand that under-enrolled schools are often a harbinger of the worst things to come. School closings means the laying off of staff, from teachers to maintenance staff, many of whom live in the community where the school is located. Thus, younger upwardly mobile parents begin to move out and the neighborhood goes into a definite downward economic and social spiral. In the 1960s, and throughout the tenure of Mayor Harold Washington, Black teachers in the CPS school system were almost half the teaching population, however, now they represent less than 19 percent. Given the prospect of a 500 million dollar shortfall in the budget, Forrest Claypool has stated that if the state does not make up the difference, he will be forced to

04 November 11 - 17, 2015 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

lay off some 1500 or maybe as many as 5000 teachers, and merge and/or close more schools to close the budget gap. Clearly, as it happened in the closure of 50 schools in 2013, Black teachers suffered a higher layoff rate than any other group. At the same time, Black teachers who lost their jobs due to layoffs, were not hired in charter schools. Since public school teachers are among the public service professionals that constitute the bulk of the Black middle class, when they lose their jobs it is immediately realized as an economic blow to the Black community’s stability. Standard testing has always been a controversy in the Black community because the tests were proven to be racists in their construction and their baseline cultural assumptions. This age old problem is exacerbated by the federal legislation, No Child Left Behind which emphasizes testing as a measure of academic progress for teachers and students. The latest fuel that has been added to this fire is the refusal of some parents to al-

low their children to participate in the testing that is required by the federally mandated Common Core cirriculum. When the ISAT and the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) tests are added to this panoply of confusion, Black parents and students are totally perplexed. The thing that plagues Black people is the fact that teachers are forced to teach for testing and this deemphasizes problem solving and critical thinking. Thus, the students are inevitably classified as underachievers. Their chances of acquiring entrance to college and/or a good job after high school is constricted. The capstone of this dilemma is the looming teacher’s strike of the public schools. Mrs. Karen Lewis, President of the Chicago Teachers Union, has warned her membership that the possibility of a school strike is real. The union has already taken what she has called a “practice” strike vote and a poll of its members to make sure that the union meets the 75 percent vote required by state law for the union to

“This situation is heartbreaking. Black people and Black parents in particular must come together and fight to save our children,” says Ms. Cathy Dale, activist and a leader of the Dyett School hunger strikers. Cathy Dale believes that Dyett is simply the tip of the iceberg and that it is indicative of the fact that the CPS board has turned a deaf ear to the Black community as well as our elected officials. “The Dyett school hunger strike did not end in a victory for the community, it was a compromise that will end up leading to the closing of that school because there was little planning for the proposed arts program. When the school is not able to recruit the students needed to fill up the seats, CPS will close it. We had a plan for a Global Green Technology school that was based upon a well written proposal and a dream of Mr. Dwayne Turner. The Board vetoed the wishes of the community and gave us the Arts program instead. We must come together and fight to save our children and our community!” says Ms. Dale. There is unanimous consensus throughout the Black community that Black children are in great danger from the threat of violence to the closing of schools. The question that it raises is how will the Black community respond to these dangers? Most observers believe that we will see these issues heat up, in early 2016, when the state, city and CPS budget issues come to a head. The Black community has promised to pay a great deal of attention to the movement of Governor Rauner, Mayor Emanuel, and the CPS board. Our children’s future is more important than the political longevity of any of these politicians.

was shot to death in the front seat of his father’s vehicle according to Louisiana authorities. Jeremy Mardis, a first-grader, was hit by five bullets in the head and chest as the officers pursued his father’s car, according to the police report. Chris Few, the boy’s father was hospitalized with gunshot wounds and was listed in critical condition.

E NOTES By Kai EL’Zabar

Defender Executive Editor

Swift Charges In The Bayou I hate to have to discuss this but I think it’s necessary and important that we do. Regarding the case of Louisiana City Marshals, Norris Greenhouse Jr., 23, and Derrick Stafford, 32, who have been arrested and charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. They were placed on administrative leave, as were two other marshals involved in the chase, who have not been charged. In a court hearing this past Monday, a Louisiana judge set a $1 million bond for each of the two officers. The court has ordered both men to surrender their firearms and badges. The two police officers are facing murder charges after a 6-year-old boy

The shooting happened on a deadend street at the end of a Tuesday night car chase in Marksville, a town 90 miles northwest of Baton Rouge, authorities said. Every accounting reports that it’s unclear why the officers pursued or why shots were fired, since investigators say there were no outstanding warrants against the father and that no firearm was found in his vehicle. This next statement is a bit confusing, following the previous, “According to police footage of an officer-involved shooting contributed to prosecutors’ decision to press charges.” The latter statement conveys that there is incriminating evidence that influenced the choice to charge the officers with second-degree and attempted second-degree murder. The two statements however are perplexing. Either you have or you don’t have reason to believe the officers committed a crime. Now let’s look at what the Louisiana State Police colonel had to say. “The fatal shooting of Jeremy Mardis in Marksville was captured on a body camera worn by one of the four police

officers present at the scene. It was that video footage that led in part to the decision to charge two of them with second-degree murder on Friday night.”

termine if there was any misconduct on the part of the officer(s). This is the sort of disparity we witness time and time again.

“The footage,” Colonel Mike Edmonson of the Louisiana State Police told reporters, was “extremely disturbing, and it is partly why we’re here tonight with these charges. . .

Now, please do not mistake my discussion here, as one meant to convey, that our brothers as wrong as they may be for the murder of an innocent child, as condoning the crime. Let’s be clear, that

“I don’t care who they are: white, Black, male or female they must receive proper psychological evaluation, appropriate diversity training, available therapy and anger management.” I’m not gonna talk about it, but I’m gonna tell you this. It is the most disturbing thing I’ve seen and I will leave it at that.” I know that in speaking with my colleagues and holding conversations with other Blacks about the two Black police officers, who allegedly killed a 6-year-old white boy, while pursuing his father’s car, we observed how quickly they were brought up on charges. Whereas, when their white counterparts were accused of such heinous crimes against Blacks, the usual response would be an announcement that there is an investigation to de-

Officer’s History According to The Town Talk newspaper in Alexandria, Louisiana, Stafford was indicted in 2011 on two counts of aggravated rape. The Town Talk reported that both cases were dismissed without prejudice in 2012. One of the incidents dated back to 2004. The other occurred while Stafford was employed by the Marksville Police Department, where he has worked for eight years. Further, Stafford has been named as a defendant in five civil lawsuits, including at least one related to the use of excessive force. That particular case is still pending. Greenhouse has also been named in a civil lawsuit related to the use of excessive force. That case is still pending

is not the point of my discussion. Rather, I am simply examining how we—members of ‘The Race’ are treated differently in such circumstances.

Note that Greenhouse’s father, Norris Greenhouse Sr., is an assistant district attorney and therefore an educated man. So what’s wrong with this picture?

The disparity is that no matter how disturbing the videos capturing white officers committing heinous offenses and killing Black people, most often than not, the officers are released on their own recognizance. Especially, if they have no record of abuse and even when they do. Only recently, have we began to see this change, as with the case of a University of Cincinnati police officer who shot a motorist, during a traffic stop, over a missing front license plate that he was indicted on a murder charge. The prosecutor stated that, “the officer purposely killed him” and “should never have been a police officer.”

According to a CNN review of both officers’ records, neither has ever been convicted of a crime. And herein lies the gray area.

The officer, named Tensing, was wearing a body camera showing the moment he shot the motorist, yet he reported a different scenario and was believed until footage was viewed.

Our Lifestyles. Our Opinions. Our News.

My position is that given the information about Stafford and Greenhouse, the two should have been fired long ago based on their past behavior and pending cases.

Later information reveal that officer Tensing, like many of his peers, brought up on such charges including the officer in South Carolina who physically manhandled and dragged a young Black female student in her classroom, should not have been hired as law enforcement officers to begin with.

On a whole, cities need to do a better job of scrutinizing their law enforcement employees. I don’t care who they are: white, Black, male or female, they must receive proper psychological evaluations, appropriate diversity training, on-going therapy and anger management counseling. Clearly there is a missing link when officers of the law continue to commit crimes against the public while wearing a body cam and worse—lie about what occurred, citing the victim as the aggressor. This is an issue to correct hat the public has to force their city governments to pursue and implement. As we look at the crime rate in Chicago including police crimes against civilians and the recent demand for the top cop’s resignation, we need to make our demands known and begin the dialog in an effort to change what is wrong. Come join us at our upcoming forums to discuss this and others matters that concern you. www.chicagodefender.com

LOCAL NEWS

Our Kids, Our parents, continued from Page 2

Philip Jackson, Executive Director of the Black Star Project has suggested the “Million Fathers Clubs” as a follow up to his annual “Million Fathers March”. This week he sent out an email sharing his thoughts on the recent murders of Tyshawn Lee (9), Kaylyn Pryor (20) and J-Quantae Riles (14), all died on the streets of Chicago. “I am a 65 year-old Black man, still afraid for my life in America, and afraid not to be afraid in America. My courage and confidence to do the things to save our people are low,” Jackson wrote. “I have been taught, by American schools and American society, to be afraid of speaking up for and saving Black people. I have no right to be afraid with death looming so near!!! But I am. I have been taught well!” There are organizations and volunteer groups of men and women all over the city that are working diligently to address this problem. Organizations such as Blue 1647, The Black United Fund of Illinois (BUFI), Global Girls, Rainbow PUSH, BUILD, Kids Off the Block are among many solid programs in the Black community. Organizations both new and established in the Black community are concerned about this problem and are speaking out about it. Elders are passing on who have been a constant voice in the Civil Rights. With the recent death of former Congressman Augusta ‘Gus’ Savage, a ‘game changer’ in politics and one of the most highly regarded media figures—our gentle giants are leaving big shoes to fill. A familiar figure of change and community activism, Congressman Bobby L. Rush has witnessed variations of political and social outcry within the Black community. The heighten increase of violence has left him no other choice but to seek out the involvement of two of the most influential figures in Chicago gang history. He recently traveled to visit Larry Hoover, co-founder of the Gangster Disciples and Jeff Fort, founder of the Black P-Stone Nation at the maximum security prison, ADMAX, located in Florence, Colorado. Congressman Rush said, “both men are now elders and can influence a positive outcome to the problems that plague the streets of Chicago.”

www.chicagodefender.com

Rush said when talking with both Hoover and Fort, “They have committed that their voices will be heard along with other voices out here. The want to bring an end to this murder and mayhem that is overtaking our communities,” he said. “Within their limitations, they now hold a calmness or peace in our neighborhood and I find them to be very wise in their commitment to end this violence.” According to DNA Chicago, just recently, the mother of Tyshawn Lee was criticized for allegedly using monies donated to a GoFundMe account set up to assist the family with funeral and burial expenses for her son to purchase a car. The young lady quickly took to her Instagram page, angrily espousing about the dangers she faces utilizing public transportation and that her son would’ve wanted her to make such a purchase for her safety. The posts have been deleted and her Facebook account has been deactivated. Some donors were upset while others empathized with her situation. Unfortunately, critics attributed such behavior to the mother’s naivety and just making the wrong choices at the wrong time. This is an example of how percieved priorities have shifted somewhere between today’s generation and previous ones. When a person dies at the hand of gun violence, human instinct is to cringe and ask the question, ‘When will it end?’. When a child’s life is taken all too soon, it strikes a different emotional chord than that of an adult. The cameras come into the neighborhoods as ministers, public officials and the mayor gather around a podium for the 5pm news soundbite. However, after the press conference ends, the cameras breakdown, the reporters disperse and the public officials return back to their homes; the community in the spotlight still suffers. Many Black parents are only children themselves. The Black community is living out the consequences of a generation’s long cycle of low expectations in education, lack of adequate information and practice in family planning, lack of parenting skills, and an extreme lack of economic development in our communities. And, it’s killing the children.

Orbert Davis: Bringing Cuba and The U.S. Together Through Jazz

By Mary L. Datcher Senior Staff Writers

The history of our African ancestry is similar to our Caribbean cousins in Haiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Cuba. Although, it’s obvious that there is African blood that runs through the veins of the natives of these islands our common denominator is the influence of music. Artistic Director of the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic Orchestra, Orbert Davis is an accomplished trumpeter and world renowned musician. Davis and musicians of Chicago Jazz Philharmonic conducted a weeklong residency at ISA in December 2014, culminating in the debut of the new work at the Havana International Jazz Festival. During the CJP residency the US and Cuba announced normalization of diplomatic relations, thrusting Davis into the spotlight of local and national news. Orbert explains, “My goal in the whole trip was to connect with Cuban musicians, to play with them – to feel in a sense what they felt when they played. We received a grant from the Mac Arthur Foundation to return to the university. But this time to work with an orchestra, the CJPO is a 62-piece orchestra and we wanted to replicate that with 60 students. It was breathtaking on so many levels, musically, socially but also politically.” This week, 40 Cuban nationals visit Chicago to perform for the US premiere of Davis’ newest jazz symphony on Friday, November 13, 2015, at the Auditorium Theatre. The students who have traveled from Cuba will participate in various events around the city of Chicago designed to foster communications and the exchange of ideas with local Chicagoans.

Chicago Jazz Philharmonic Artistic Director, Orbert Davis (center) with the Cuban student delegation in Cuba.

The delegation consists of student musicians and administrators from Universidad de las Artes (ISA) in Havana, Cuba’s national conservatory of music. Davis feels this is a start to building great communication between the countries through the next generation of thinkers through music. “It’s not about just bringing students here – it’s about the relationship. The seeds that was planted in Havana can now grow into a deeper relationship and deeper challenge. We want the students to return to Cuba and continue our relationships becoming the future leaders – the voice of reason,” he said. The cultural exchange facilitated by the easing of relations is part of Davis’ greater plan to establish a long-term relationship between the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic and ISA, allowing musicians of both countries to dialogue and learn from one another.

“When we look at the contributions of Cuban music and Jazz throughout the world, they’re almost kindred spirits. The music took off like wildfire because they are so closely related. One of the things we discovered was the musicians that was classically trained, they learned and approached Jazz so quickly because it’s in their blood,” Davis said. “They can understand the concept of emotion, spontaneity and the feeling of risk and circumstance.--going beyond their written note.” The special performance between the young Cuban musicians and the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic is something much larger than the music. “I’m excited as a composer that I get to investigate this relationship and present it onstage. Who knows where it’s going to go in the future – I think it’s going to be phenomenal,” he smiles. “It’s going to be in the hands of Cubans as well as in the hands of Americans.”

In each young person, there is the potential of a great leader. In each great leader—lies the future of our country’s well being. This kind of affirmation is the foundation of building a stable and responsible citizen. No one knows this better than Chicago native and attorney Kim Foxx. If you were to take a look at her impressive resume, you will see that it will reflect her hard work, intelligence and academic talents in climbing to the top of her game. Foxx rose through the ranks of law school graduating from Southern Illinois University, to cutting her teeth as a juvenile prosecutor and supervising attorney in the juvenile justice bureau of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office—to holding down the position of Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy and Planning for Cook County Board President, Toni Preckwinkle is quite impressive. able to process their emotions around ple do what was right,” she said. Triumph Over Adversity

A few months ago, she made the announcement to step down from her appointment as the Deputy Chief of Staff to seek a higher post—the Cook County State’s Attorney office. The move was a bold one and some may think ambitious on her part to try to unseat Cook County State’s Attorney, Anita Alavez, but Foxx is no stranger to a tough challenge. Her childhood doesn’t read like the television script of the “Brady Brunch” or the fictional characters of the Huxtables, but having a determined mom and grandmother to motivate her overshadowed her circumstances. Raised by a single mom, Foxx and her brother moved around between the Cabrini Green projects to the Austin community and at one point finding themselves homeless. Dealing with some of the challenges, as a young girl, she was a victim of sexual abuse and without hesitation, her mother sought professional help for her to heal. “My mother was a victim of domestic violence as well. All of these factors we see in a number of the youth that come through the justice system. Our girls who have anger issues are un-

what’s happening in the home so they explode outside of the home,” Foxx said. One of the changes that influenced Foxx was being relocated from her Cabrini Green elementary school less than two miles away in Lincoln Park to the LaSalle Language Academy. “It was a world of difference in terms of what your expectations were. They expected me to learn Spanish in third grade when kids began learning in kindergarten. There was not an expectation that I couldn’t reach. There was not an expectation that I could not play an instrument. They just laid it out for you,” she said. “You will do this, you will do that because they believed you could.” That determination continued to follow Foxx to Lincoln Park High School where she began to build her oratory skills, joining the student law program. Foxx recounts, “I knew very early that I would practice law. We were always in court for child support. My mom would tell me, ‘This is the place where they make things right.’ I knew that I wanted to be a part of that. I want to be a part of making peo-

high school student, Foxx would participate in mock trials with fellow students being coached by professional lawyer mentors. One of the things she remembered, a teacher told her, “‘You can’t roll your eyes when people object.’ I said, ‘I do?’ The whole team said, ‘Yes, you do!’ So, to this day, I’m mindful of not looking annoyed or to roll my eyes.” Foxx laughs. These are some of the things that Foxx discusses when she talks about how she was raised and the strong women in her life—growing up in one of the most challenging parts of the city at the time. She feels a deep connection between her past and her present as she dives into the murky waters of the political campaign trail. “Right now, people see that there is a real need. The issue is bigger than the personality. We talk about ‘Justice or Else’, there is a real sense in this country that ‘Justice’ is not equatable. It’s just ‘us’ instead of ‘justice’. It hasn’t been difficult for people to stand up and say, ‘It’s time for change.’ I really think from the endorsements that are out there with more to come, people are tired,” Foxx said.

Her campaign endorsements have gradually started to build up a diverse mix of political leaders from Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (9th District), Chicago City Treasurer Kurt Summers, State Rep. Elaine Nekritz, State Senator Kwame Raoul, Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Larry Rogers, Jr., City Council Black Caucus Chair Alderman Roderick T. Sawyer (6th Ward), Alderman Carrie Austin (34th Ward) and Democracy for America. Since mid-October, the Foxx camp has raised $200,000 and understand there is still a great deal of monies that will be needed to go up against the Alvarez machine and candidate, Donna Moore. To Foxx, this election is more than just a soundbite or clever hashtag—it’s about engaging the communities that are most affected by disparities that are plagued by the criminal justice system. “There’s an obvious resonance with people in communities that have been affected by violence. If you go to the North Side, they also see it. For them, it’s a matter of what’s happening to these communities? There’s empathy and also the county rises and falls by the last of our neighborhoods— its heartbreaking to see this.”

In addressing some of these disparities, Foxx contends the top three concerns that is a ‘must’ to address are focusing on low level offenses which holds certain bias towards Black and Hispanic offenders. “How is it that we find certain populations that are ‘over represented’ in the jails?” Police accountability is another priority in bringing some validity of trust between the community and law enforcement. “Across the board, there is a concern from the national conversation on Sandra Bland, Freddie Gray and Michael Brown as well as Rekia Boyd. People are asking how come we never see anything happen to police officers? There’s a notion that the State’s Attorney office and the CPD are joined by the hip so you may rarely see police accountability,” Foxx explains. “People are frustrated by this.” Lastly, she shares her growing concern over the gun violence and fear that has gripped Cook County residents. “We spend a lot of money on nonviolent offenders in our jails and the violence is ramping up. The question becomes, ‘You’ve locked up so many people. How come our streets are still pouring blood?,” she contends. “We’ve diverted our attention to thousands of little cases that the effort, time, money and energy to battle the big issues have been ignored.” A wife and mom of two young daughters, Foxx holds these issues close to home as she seeks an office that will influence the future of not only her children but all children that reside in the county. This is not a responsibility she takes lightly. With her family in her corner, she reflects on the challenges that could’ve made her just another negative statistic but in fact made her a strong example of triumph over adversity. “For me, I feel so blessed to come from where I’ve come from and given an opportunity to do something. I want to be able for us to have prosperous communities thrive because we are not throwing them away. It’s personal to me because I’m watching us literally throw people away. It has impact on communities, when you throw away a generation.,” Foxx concludes. “What happens when the fathers aren’t there or when the sons aren’t there? When we have policies that don’t fit the crime and people go away—they come back, can’t get a job or an education. We’re watching the destruction and doing absolutely nothing about it.” Kim is an advocate for change.

LOCAL NEWS Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Writer

The streets of Chicago is not as hard to maneuver as some may think. Growing up on the West Side, Madison Street was the geographical compass of determining where we coming from and where we were heading. We were introduced to our first presidents by becoming familiar with the order of our streets. Whether you lived between Washington, Jackson, Adams, Monroe and Van Buren—the common denominator was the West Side. As you travel South from Austin, over the 1-290 Eisenhower Expressway, the numbers go up past Roosevelt and the empty lots begin to open up into the Lawndale community and traveling North East will position you in Humboldt Park. Knowing the streets is not about being tough and guarded, it’s about being geographically aware being so in tune that you become the compass. This can save your life or end it. BUILD has been a life saver for many whose called the West Side and Northwest Side of Chicago their home. Established in 1969 under Broader Urban Involvement & Leadership Development, it began as a gang intervention program dealing with more than 200 gang affiliated youth. Since its start, BUILD now serves close to 3,000 Chicago youth in the Austin, Humboldt Park, Lawndale, Garfield Park and reaching out to the South Side. There are organizations that have similar outreach programs but BUILD has carved out a unique place in the community which has existed over the past 46 years. They have called the North Side home until 2012 when they relocated their operations to the Austin community, occupying the old South Shore Bank building north of the I-290 expressway. What may be regarded to some as a community center, behind the walls of the pristine white and brown brick building is years of history and hard core experience. The organization is run like a well-oiled machine with art and technology programs for young students but there are no restrictions for community residents of all ages to utilize their resources. As you walk the hallways of BUILD, the artwork of students grace the walls giving you a sense of community www.chicagodefender.com

ownership and participation. However, the real beauty of the organization is the ‘art of intervention’--the staff. BUILD has one of the most effective gang intervention teams in the Chicago region. The team is a diverse group of ex-gang members, ex-felons and non-offenders, both Hispanic and Black men who have come together for a common mission—to save young lives. Clifton ‘Booney’ McFowler grew up in the Austin community having joined ‘The Undertakers’, a part of the Vice Lords gang in the 1970’s. He served 27 years in prison and upon release, returned to his neighborhood noticing a great change. “I been home 5 years. I’ve been in this community all of my life. When I returned home and saw the condition of my community I recognized that I was such a major part of the construction of my community. I knew I had to be a part of the reconstruction of my community,” He said. He was approached by BUILD to join their team and be a part of this change with its influence and experience. He is happy with his choice and feels a connection to the youth that they are in need for some solid guidance.

Streets Are Watching

“The youth can bring their grievances to us. When they bring it to me, I bring it to us (BUILD). We sit around as a team and discuss solutions as how to combat the violence in the community. We also help the youth find jobs during the summer and winter times. These are the resources that we didn’t have in Austin when I was growing up,” McFowler said. “This end of Austin – everyone forget about the South. Things are concentrated North of here so this ends up being the most neglected part of the Austin community. This is the most violent section because there aren’t a lot of resources – no entrepreneurship.”

Felix Jusino has been a part of BUILD since 1990’s, having served time and released in 1994 — It has become a real life mission for him. “I’ve been doing this type of work since 1994. Before then, I got in trouble and went to prison and got out. I started working with BUILD. During the time I was in prison, I realized my fellow inmates were not my enemy. I learned that inside. When I was in the streets, and I saw you, I would come at you because of your ‘colors’ (gangs identify each other by their colors) or because you were a different race. I realized inside the prison walls, that we weren’t enemies,” Jusino said. With organizations such as Cease Fire on shaky ground not receiving adequate State funding to continue community outreach to youth in trouble; BUILD picks up the slack. It contiues an ongoing connection with young adults. The BUILD team shares common experiences with its clients. Jusino said, “They can relate to us because we’ve been through a lot of the hardships they’re going through. ‘You’ve been shot, I’ve been shot. You’e fighting a case, I’ve fought cases. You’ve been down to prison, I’ve been to pris-

on.’ I know it can delay some things in life but I can do it – you can do it. So, that’s our message. As one of the younger invention coordinators, Terrence Smith has never been convicted and has used his influence to encourage students through sports. “As far as connecting with the youth, it’s just meeting them where they’re at – to find a common goal to reach them. A lot of us use sports – that’s the big thing. There’s food and there’s sports. You have free food or basketball or have a football, it breaks a lot of barriers,” He said. “Some of the things that we do with the gangs is ‘case management’ through the juvenile detention center. The first thing is to make sure that they have a safe and comfortable haven because they come from all over the city. They can get there safely and return home safely. That is our first priority.”  Everyday, there is a young victim whose been shot or have died from a gunshot wound. The relationships that the team has grown over the years, have built a level of trust between many families of trouble youth. No one knows this better than Max Cerda who is often on speed dial with many families. A former staffer of Cease Fire and hospital respondent, he is a quiet but strong presence on the BUILD gang intervention team. “BUILD is not funded by the government, they just can’t shut us down because they don’t want to give us any money. That’s another contributing factor that keeps us successful. Our predecessors, our past directors were wise and smart enough to have relationships and engage with private donors that is not contingent on the State budget. We’re blessed compared to other organizations depending on State and federal funding,” Cerda explains. One of the ways that BUILD continues to bring in the private donations is through ongoing monthly events such as fundraisers hosted by the Associate Board. They continue to host seminars and workshops for residents to learn about healthy eating, nutrition, job preparation, art design and life learning skills. There is no doubt the commitment that its staff has to help the community grow in a positive way. “We’ve been here and we’re still here. We’re committed. We keep our relationships going, we build from there and we’re consistent,” Booney said. “When you’re working with young people, you have to be consistent. The moment you walk away—they don’t want to have anything to do with you.”

The Chicago Urban League’s 54th Annual Fellowship Dinner

04 Tradition is celebrated throughout American during this season but off the record in Chicago the season kicks off with the Macys (formerly Marshall Fields) Tree Lighting Ceremony and Holiday Windows. In fact, it’s been a Chicago tradition for over 100 years. The 108 year tradition continues with the Walnut Room, the first restaurant established in a department store a restaurant where the ceremony takes place. So with tradition comes innovation and the birthing of new beginnings, new traditions. Every year people pack the house as they gather on the 7th floor of Macys for the ceremony as a celebrity flicks the switch that lights the 45 foot tall tree. On Saturday November 7 Macy’s did not disappoint, joined by actress and multi-platinum recording artist, Jordan Sparks, who pulled the switch along with participating 6-yearold Make-A-Wish® twin brothers Ameer and Amar kicking off the Macy’s Believe campaign. She then graced us with a mini performance to bring in the holiday cheer. Tradition continued that evening at the Chicago Hilton, Michigan Ave Cultural Mile, Continental Ballroom at the Chicago Urban League’s 54th Annual Fellowship Dinner: “Inspiration for the Next Generation.” In keeping with its grand presentation the room was packed with Chicago’s Black elite and upwardly mobile. The room was festive with conversation that carried throughout as people mixed, mingled and exchanged promising moments of possibility. Gala Chair, Melvin D. Williams inspired the crowd and Interim President/CEO Shari Runner welcomed the guests. The evenings recipients of the Edwin C. “Bill” Berry Civil Rights Award were Pulitzer Prize winner Isabel Wilkerson and Chicago’s own historian, respected educator and Civil/political rights activist Timuel D. ARTS & CULTURE

Art As Music by Wadsworth Jarrell Revolutionary, 1972

Candace Hunter Defender Contributing Writer

Chicago Artists Month has come to an end. The Harlem Fine Arts Show has come to an end. The SOFA (Sculptural Objects and Functional Art) has come to a close. And now, you are starving for more feasting for the eyes? Well, have you made it over to the Museum of Contemporary Art for their incredible show, “The Freedom Principle”? Touted as, Music you can see. Art you can hear, this show examines the work of musicians and visual artists, who, starting in 1965, experimented with their creativity and the product of that creativity. This experimentation gave birth to the AACM. The Freedom Principle, is a large scale exhibition that examines and puts on view the thought and product of the creative musicians of the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) just as they celebrate their first fifty years of existence. The AACM, born and bred on the Southside of Chicago along with the heyday of AfriCOBRA (the African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists) (bad being uber good and righteous), on the heels of OBAC (The Organization of Black American Culture) and the height of the Black Panther Party, was an experimental music organization whose time had come. Revolution was on the lips of young brilliant artists. Artists who were struggling to find a new way to talk about, to show, to celebrate everything that they felt was good and exceptional in themselves and about their community. A brilliant and heady time. The founders of the AACM, walking nearly lockstep next to their literary and visual comrades, borrowed liberally from each art form, creating a multidisciplined

Lewis and the Art Ensemble of Chicago: Lester Bowie, Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, Famoudou Don Moye, and Malachi Favors. Performance venues and spaces were hard to come by, and so the group, following suit behind the Educational Program of the Black Panther Party, started to offer free music instruction for the

youth in their community – which still continues today. Late in the 60’s, Europe discovered these “creative” musicians and bookings started to come in. Over the years, some of the members took up residence in Paris, London and New York, but Chicago has always remained the creative soil on which this music is housed.

The music of the AACM continued to attract listeners across both sides of the Atlantic, but not without controversy at times and small audiences. But, because it is a “Power Greater Than Itself” – one of the mantras of the AACM - the AACM continued on. And it was with great insight that the curators of the MCA saw fit to not only celebrate the work of the AACM, but also to conduct scholarly research, placing it and its work in the annals of Art History. The Defender got a chance to sit with one of the curators of the Freedom Principle and talked about the reasons why this show is important and relevant. Meeting with Naomi Beckwith, the Marilyn and Larry Fields Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, we got to discuss this visually captivating exhibition that is about music and a time of creative confluence. Along with co-curator, Dieter Roelstraete, they had the yeoman’s task of holding true to the dissonance of the music and ideals of the AACM and bringing it together in a context that would be legible to the casual viewer as well as for those in scholarly pursuit. The MCA reached out city-wide to make sure that this music, born and bred on the Southside of Chicago could be seen by the citizens of the Southside and the Westside and the Westbank of Paris. The ads in brilliant yellow can be seen every day on the back of #6 and #4 bus lines, beckoning us to come and enter and take in what is rightfully yours and, what is rightfully owned by the world at large. So, how does music come to be in an Art Museum? The curators were both interested in contemporary Jazz and its place in Chicago. Recognizing cycles and how they come and go, the curators wanted to examine this particular time of the Black Arts Movement, and as Ms. Beckwith said, “…scholarly, intellectually, intentionally…”. www.chicagodefender.com

ARTS & CULTURE That cycle that created the Black Arts Movement of the 60’s is seen again now in the Black Lives Matter movement and the soon-to-be Post Obama landscape. Ms. Beckwith wanted to examine these cycles in a deeply intellectual way, asking questions like, “How does one start to unpack this work as Art History?”. Included in the exhibition are not only archival ephemera, but also the visual works and artifacts of AACM musicians and those who have been influenced and embraced by the originality of the AACM. Works by Nick Cave, Douglas Ewart, William Pope. L, Lauren Deutsch, Robert Abbott Sengstacke, Emilio Cruz, Rashid Johnson, Jae Jarrells, Wadswoth Jarrells, Nelson Stevens and others bring the visual punch to “seeing” music. The Freedom Principle runs through November 22. Please go and “see” and “hear” for yourself. www.mcachicago.org for a complete schedule and hours.

Hemp belongs to the genus Cannibis sativa and has been cultivated for thousands of years as a source of fiber, edible seeds, edible oil, lubricant, and as a fuel. Smoking cannabis isn’t particularly good for you, but it turns out applying it directly to the skin in the form of hemp seed oil has a few benefits you might want to see for yourself! The Cannabis plant contains powerful anti-inflammatory agents called cannabinoids – about 60 different types.

Benefits of Hemp Seeds

Hemp Seeds are a perfect and natural blend of easily digested proteins, essential fats (Omega 3 & 6), Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA), antioxidants, amino acids, fiber, iron, zinc, carotene, phospholipids, phytosterols, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin D, vitamin E, chlorophyll, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, copper, potassium, phosphorus, and enzymes. All amino acids essential to optimum health are found in Hemp Seeds, including the rarely found Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA). The 17+ grams of omega fats supplied by Hemp Seeds provides sufficient, continuous energy throughout your day. Many users also experience these health benefits: • Excellent source of essential fatty acids including Omega 3, 6 and GLA in the perfect balance. • More digestible protein than meat, whole eggs, cheese, human milk, cows milk or any other high protein food. • Rich in Vitamin E • Can be eaten by those unable to tolerate nuts, gluten, lactose or sugar; there are no known allergies to hemp foods.

Essential Fatty Acids in Hemp Seeds

The oil contained in the hemp seed is 75-80% polyunsaturated fatty acids (the good fats) and only 9-11% of the lesser desired saturated fatty acids. Hemp seed oil is reputed to be the most unsaturated oil derived from the plant kingdom. The essential fatty acids (EFAs) contained in hemp seed oil are deemed essential because our bodies do not naturally produce them. This

means that they must be obtained from the food we eat. Most health organizations agree that the human body needs a 3 or 4:1 balance of omega 6 over omega 3. Hemp seed is the only seed where this ideal balance occurs. It does not occur in flax, almond, walnut, soybean or olive oil. Daily use of flax seed can lead to dangerous imbalances since flax seed oil has a balance of 1:4 instead of a healthy 4:1 omega-6 over omega-3. EFAs are involved with producing life’s energy throughout the human body and without them, life is not possible. In general, North Americans have a high dietary deficiency in EFAs due to their high intake of processed foods and meats. It has been proven in several clinical studies that dietary supplementation with EFAs or their metabolites (such as GLA) will often prevent or even cure many forms of illness. Hemp contains all the required proteins in the best proportions for human nutrition: Hemp protein is also a complete source of all 20 known amino acids including the 9 essential amino acids (EAAs), which our bodies cannot produce. Approximately 65% of the protein in hemp seed is made up of the globulin protein Edestin, and is found only in hemp seed. Edestin aids digestion, is relatively phosphorus-free and considered the backbone of the cell’s DNA. The other one third of hemp seed protein is Albumin, another high quality globulin protein similar to that found in egg whites. Hemp protein is free of the tryspin inhibitors which block protein absorption and free of oligosaccharides found in soy, which cause stomach upset and gas. Hemp Seeds are a more digestible protein than meat, whole eggs, cheese, human milk, cows milk, or any other high protein food. They have a better spectrum of available proteins than soybeans--without the soybean anti-nutritional factors. With 78% essential fats hemp oil greatly exceeds soy oil at 40%, canola oil at 30%, olive oil at 10% and other oils. Omega 3 and Omega 6 essential fats may reduce cholesterol, blood pressure, coronary heart disease and stroke. The 3:1 ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 EFA’s in hemp oil is thought to be the best in nature for promoting cellular health. Hemp oil contains more “Omega 3” EFA components (19%) than are found in any fish and in most fish-oil supplements. Hemp foods reduce inflammation and benefit those with arthritis, cardiovascular disease, psoriasis--even tuberculosis. By improving circulation and reducing inflammation, hemp products may be particularly beneficial for diabetics. As a rare source of GLA, hemp seeds may be beneficial to those too ill to synthesize this EFA from other fats. Hemp oil contains plant sterols, which may reduce the risk of colon and prostate cancer. “Cannabinoids are powerful antioxidants worth exploring. Take time to learn more about what foods you eat for your health’s sake.

With recipes inspired by Black family celebrations, Jocelyn Delk Adams’ new book Grandbaby Cakes: Modern Recipes, Vintage Charm, Soulful Memories (Agate Surrey, $22.95) arrives just in time for the holidays. The colorful cookbook with more than 50 recipes and a short foreword written by The Chew’s Carla Hall, this charming book would make a great addition to your per-sonal kitchen bookshelf or to order as a gift for cooks of all levels. Belk, who contributes regularly to the blog on her website, Grandbabycakes.com offers great advice for new bakers without much experience in the kitchen. “Novice bakers need to gain the confidence that comes with knowing they created a successful recipe,” she say, adding that when they do, “the intimidation factor melts away.” Pay attention to the top right corner of the page with this recipe for Mama’s 7UP Pound Cake and you’ll notice only one out of three highlighted measuring spoons. As revealed in the front of the book

this classifies the recipe as requiring the least amount to time and effort. “If you are a novice baker, this level should be your first stop,” Belk writes, addressing new bakers when she mentions the lack of a leavening agent in this particular cake in the recipe’s headnote. “A significantly longer creaming process adds more air to the batter, giving it the lift it needs. Don’t skip this step,” she writes.

Mama’s 7UP Pound Cake Cake: 3 s ticks (1 1/2 cups) unsalted butter at room temperature 3 cups granulated sugar 1 teaspoon salt 5 eggs at room temperature 3 cups sifted cake flour ½ c up 7UP soda at room temperature 1 tablespoon lemon extract Glaze: 1 cup confectioners’ sugar 3 tablespoons 7UP soda ½ teaspoon lemon extract Heat the oven to 315 degrees. Beat the butter for 2 minutes on high speed in the bowl of a stand mixer fitter with the whisk attachment. Slowly add the sugar and salt; continue beating until very pale, yellow and fluffy, about 7 minutes. Add the eggs, one at a time, combining well after each addition and scraping down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed. With the mixer on low, begin adding the flour in 2 batches, careful not to over mix Pour in the 1/2 cup of the 7UP and 1 tablespoon of lemon extract. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl. Pour batter into a 10-cup Bundt pan that has been treated with the nonstick method of your choice. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour and 25 minutes.

Place the cake on a wire rack to cool 10 minutes; gently invert the cake on to a serving plate. Let cake cool completely to room temperature. Lightly cover the cake with foil or plastic to keep it from drying out. To prepare the glaze: whisk together the sugar, 3 tablespoons of 7UP and 1/2 teaspoon of lemon extract in a small bowl until the mixture is pourable. Spoon the glaze over completely cool cake. Set aside until glaze hardens. Serve at room temperature. Donna Pierce is a 2015 recipient of a Harvard Nieman Foundation Visiting Fellowship who is currently working on a cookbook about historic Black recipes and cooks, She is the former Assistant Food Editor and Test Kitchen Director for the Chicago Tribune and Contributing Editor for Upscale Magazine.

The Chicago Defender caught up with honoree, Lou Sandoval and asked him what impact The Boy Scouts had on his life? Lou Sandoval stated, “As a young boy growing up on the South Side,

there were many choices I could have made that would have dramatically changed the course of my life. Scouting was that support system along with the love and direction from my parents that provided me the tools to achieve. Most importantly by showing me that setting goals for oneself pushes you higher. Additionally, Scouting taught me that the path to success (of any kind) is not linear, rather a journey with many ups and downs that you have control over with the right decisions. It instilled in me the tenacity with which I live my life today.” We asked honoree, Marlow E. Colvin, Why is this acknowledgement important to you? He had much to say, “I am both thrilled and humbled to receive consideration for such a prestigious award from one of the Nation’s most prominent organizations. For more than a century the Boy Scouts of America have been developing the character of young boys and the evidence speaks for itself. When our young people in-

“What makes the award so meaningful is that it comes directly from the community that raised me. I grew up in the Scouts, participating as a third grader in my local Cub Scout pack that met every Saturday morning, in the basement of St. Felicitas Church. So to receive such an award, named after one of my personal heroes, Whitney M. Young, Jr., makes this that much more of an honor. Finally, while I thank the Boy Scouts of America for this honor, I especially would like to thank Dwayne Hunter for his tireless advocacy for Scouting on the Southside of Chicago. I look forward to the evening of the 14th to celebrate all that the Boy Scouts have accomplished, and add my voice of congratulations to the Scouts, and the prominent awardees I’ll share the stage with.” The awards dinner also serves as a fundraiser for the Scouting programs the honorees have championed. Last year, the event funded programs for over 1,100 at-risk and low-income youth served by Pathway to Adventure Council.
