Defender Political Editor Black parents that send their children to Mt. Carmel Catholic High School to play football know that it will be tough, but hope that the outcome will make their children better people and productive citizens. Mount Carmel is a football mecca and few would argue with its success. Led by Frank Lenti, an old school Catholic League football coach who rules his teams with absolute authority, Mt. Carmel is second only to Joliet Catholic with 13 Illinois state football championships under its belt. Mt. Carmel also has a record of consistently producing college level players, which is a major factor that attracts Black parents, sometimes with limited resources, to the Catholic League football powerhouse. But behind the bright lights, state championships, and college recruiting come allegations of academic discrimination, punishment vs. payment, and a football first mentality that many of those same Black parents did not anticipate.

Football Plantation

One example is Foster Williams IV, a standout player on the rise whose parents are actively involved in his life and football career. They agreed to send their son to Mt. Carmel for the opportunity to play for Lenti with hopes that the powerful coach could translate his football skills into a scholarship opportunity. But after three years, when Williams’ parents could no longer afford Mt. Carmel’s $11,300 tuition and fees, they decided to transfer him to Simeon because of financial hardship. Mt. Carmel Principal Stimler disputes that. Stimler says, “Foster Williams was a disgruntled parent who thought his son was better than he was, so he transferred his son to Simeon so he could play football. He used financial hardship as a way out.

Legacy On Hard Times

Mt. Carmel is one of the last Catholic high schools on the Southeast side of Chicago, struggling to maintain its connections to its traditional base while keeping a tight grip on changing Black athletes. Mt. Carmel has to maintain the delicate balance between staying connected to its legacy while generating revenue under current market conditions. Mt. Carmel’s issues are compounded by its physical location, which is at 64th and Dante, in a neighborhood bordered by the edge of the University of Chicago and Stony Island. Based on its location alone, Mt. Carmel has to fight the stigma of being in the “hood” as it also tries to compete with rival Catholic schools that are located closer to “safer” enclaves on the Southwest and Northwest sides of Chicago. Increasingly, the same Catholic schools in those same enclaves are becoming a refuge for the residents of the Northwest and Southwest sides seeking to protect their children from the ills that plague Chicago Public Schools, a fact that Mt. Carmel’s Principal John Stimler readily admits. “We have to compete for students with places like Saint Rita and Marist and it’s a challenge to get them to come here when their parents are concerned about shootings on Stony Island,” he lamented. “It’s really tough. We have the other schools saying we are going to be the next Hales,” he continues, referring to Hales Franciscan High School, the predominately Black Catholic high school located on 49th and Cottage Grove. Mt. Carmel’s history and legacy as a football powerhouse keep the alumni contributing and college recruiters in the building. But some parents allege that as Mt. Carmel continues to struggle to find the resources to operate, it has traded academic excellence for a win at all costs mentality to appease the alumni who are willing to write checks for champions. That is why some allege Mt. Carmel is willing to go to extreme measures to control its players.

Black Parents Want Out Of Mt. Carmel Football Mecca

“If a kid goes to school three years at Mt. Carmel, we bend over backwards to make sure they graduate from here, so that wasn’t really the issue. Mr. Williams transferred his son purely for football reasons, which just isn’t right,” said Stimler. Williams’ father tells a different story. “I could not afford Mt. Carmel anymore. How can anyone tell me my finances? They did not want my son to play anywhere else,” Foster Williams III said in an interview. Williams also states that when he decided to transfer his son out of Mt. Carmel, his family was subjected to threats and intimidation from the school, coaches and players. According to Williams, it began with Mt. Carmel trying to convince him to stay, but when they realized that he was determined to transfer to Simeon, things got ugly. Williams says Lenti allegedly told a team captain that he would make sure that Williams would never be recruited by colleges. “Lenti tried to make sure my son could not play in Chicago his senior year,” Williams says. “He chose to sink his teeth in to my son. They tried to make him an example for the other kids, using fear and intimidation.” According to Williams, one evening, a group of Mt. Carmel players showed up at his doorstep looking for his son and pinned a note to the door demanding his son’s Mt. Carmel football helmet. “It was a helmet I paid for. My son used it for summer camps so we bought it outright,” Williams recounted. “In today’s world, why any grown man would send a group of young people to my door is just unbelievable. It’s just plain irresponsible. They crossed the line.” Principal Stimler, referencing the same incident, said, “His son kept one of our helmets, painted it blue, and posted it on Twitter. So yes, maybe coach encouraged some of the boys to go get the helmet. I mean come on, he posted our helmet, painted it blue, so of course nobody liked that, and you know how kids are.”

Dirty Tricks?

Williams also alleges that, to back up Lenti’s threat that Williams would never play football in Chicago again, Mt. Carmel refused to provide his son’s transcripts in a timely fashion because of unpaid “fees.” Williams said it was a tactic to “make my son miss the eligibility deadline. But I paid for everything, including the fees. I wanted to make sure we could walk out of there free and clear.” But after giving Williams the transcripts, Mt. Carmel asked the IHSA to block Simeon from allowing Williams to play football based on boundary restrictions. “We did ask the IHSA to enforce its own rules,” confirmed Stimler, who is coincidentally a member of the IHSA board. The rule he references requires a student athlete transferring from a private to public school to sit out athletics at their new school for one year. This applies even if the student-athlete already resides in his or her public school district. Williams believes that Stimler wanted to eliminate his son’s high school career and any potential scholarship opportunities at the same time his family was going through financial hardships. “What they did to my son, it was just wrong!” the elder Williams emphasized. “When we said we couldn’t afford it anymore, they told us to ‘get a loan,’” his wife chimed in. Williams eventually won his case with the IHSA and his son was able to play for Simeon after missing one game. He finished the season as a standout and has received interest from some colleges. But Williams says his son is discouraged about his future prospects because of his decision to leave Mt. Carmel. In the meantime, his father Foster Williams III is emphatic when speaking to Black parents who are considering sending their kids to Mt. Carmel to play football. “If your kid is good, they sink their teeth into them,” he says. “And if you don’t do what they say, they do their best to ruin them, both athletically and academically.” (The Chicago Defender gave Mt. Carmel the opportunity to respond to the allegations. They declined, but did send a letter in response to our inquiries.)

NATIONAL NEWS Andre Carter Defender Contributing Writer

If you’re traffic-stopped by a cop of a different race, you’re more than twice as likely to be subjected to some kind of nonfatal force than if the officer who stopped you looks like you. If a cop is conducting a personal search on you and you’re Black, you’re twice as likely to experience some nonfatal force from that officer than if you were being searched and you were White. These little everyday facts of life about being Black and dealing with law enforcement that everyone knows but really can’t prove have just been quantified in a new study by the Justice Department. Called “Police Use of Nonfatal Force, 2002-2011,” the Bureau of Justice Statistics-researched report, released last month, firmly asserts that Blacks are 2.5 times more likely to experience the threat or use of nonfatal force by police than Whites. In the report, “nonfatal force” is defined as “shouting, cursing, threatening, pushing or grabbing, hitting or kicking, using pepper spray, using an electroshock weapon, pointing a gun or using other force.” In other words, some verbal or physical roughing up, with maybe a small order of ass-whupping on the side. The study says that on average, 44 million U.S. residents 16 or older have one or more face-to-face contacts with police every year. For the years included in the report – 2002 to 2011 – nearly 1.6 percent of U.S. residents who had those contacts with police experienced the threat or use of nonfatal force. Of those, three out of four described the force as excessive. www.chicagodefender.com

Feds’ Study: Cops Use Nonfatal Force On

Blacks Twice As Much As Whites The study says that of those who had such contacts with the police, Blacks (3.5 percent) were 2.5 times more likely than Whites (1.4 percent) and 1.7 times more likely than Hispanics (2.1 percent) to experience the threat or use of nonfatal force. Also, Blacks (2.8 percent) were more likely than Whites (1.0 percent) or Hispanics (1.4 percent) to perceive the nonfatal force as excessive. It could mean that cops used nonfatal force on Blacks more emphatically than Whites. Police-initiated stops accounted for the majority (51 percent) of face-to-face contacts. Among these stops, street stops (7.6 percent) were more likely than traffic stops (1.1 percent) to involve nonfatal force, so you’re more likely to have force used on you if the cops roust you just walking down the street or hanging on the

corner with your buddies. The analyses show that police use of nonfatal force varies by race. Blacks (4.9 percent) experienced nonfatal force during police-initiated contacts at a rate nearly three times higher than Whites (1.8 percent) and nearly two times higher than Hispanics (2.5 percent). Additionally, Blacks (14 percent) were more than twice as likely as Hispanics (6 percent) to experience nonfatal force during street stops. The study found that Blacks were almost three times more likely than Whites to experience verbal force – being shouted or cursed at – and more than twice as likely to experience physical force. Perhaps that’s why Blacks were almost three times more likely to perceive the use of physical force to be excessive than Whites.

Interestingly, the perception that the force used was excessive varied by the type of police action taken. People who were hit or kicked were more likely to perceive the police action to be excessive (97 percent) compared to those who had a gun pointed at them (81 percent), were pushed or grabbed (79 percent), were threatened with force (76 percent), or were shouted or cursed at (49 percent). In addition, those who were injured were more likely to perceive the force as excessive (94 percent) than those who were not injured (74 percent). Among residents who experienced force, 87 percent believed the police did not behave properly, but during contacts that did not involve force, 90 percent of residents believed the police did behave properly.

However, Blacks (84 percent) were still less likely to believe the police behaved properly during contacts without force than Whites (91 percent) or Hispanics (88 percent) did. Maybe it’s the tone of voice that cops use with Blacks compared to Whites, and even Hispanics, even when force or the threat of force is not present. And although rates of contact were similar across all geographic areas, people in urban locales (2.1 percent) were more likely than those in the suburbs (1.5 percent) or rural (1.2 percent) areas to experience nonfatal force. Other findings of the study show that: • Males and people ages 16 to 25 are more likely to experience police contact and the use of nonfatal force than females and persons age 26 or older. • Residents who did experience the use of force (44 percent) were more likely to have had multiple contacts with police than those who did not experience force (28 percent). • Traffic stops involving an officer and driver of different races were more than twice as likely to involve the threat or use of force (2.0 percent) than traffic stops involving an officer and driver of the same race (0.8 percent). • Blacks (1.4 percent) were twice as likely as Whites (0.7 percent) to experience nonfatal force when also experiencing a personal search during their most recent contact. The Bureau of Justice Statistics is a component of the Office of Justice Programs, which provides federal leadership in developing the nation’s capacity to prevent and control crime, administer justice, and assist victims. Jobs And Contracts

Defender Contributing Writer

• An immediate accounting of the number and percentage of city jobs and contracts that have been given to Blacks.

“From a commercial point of view, if Christmas did not exist, it would be necessary to invent it,” says social critic Katharine Whitehorn.

• A comprehensive disclosure of the number and percentage of Blacks working in each department and category of city employees. • A comprehensive disclosure of the number and percentage of Blacks awarded city contracts by Mayor Emanuel since he has been in office.

This fact is often overlooked and sometimes denied by the business community, however, we know that this reality is uppermost in the minds of Magnificent Mile merchants. They are watching their businesses take a 25 percent plunge in sales from Black Friday to Christmas Eve as a result of the marches and demonstrations being staged by dozens of groups, including Rainbow/Push, One Chicago, and dozens of groups of millennials from all over the area as well as many from out of state. The proven success of these demonstrations – blessed by the mild weather that Chicago has had during this run – makes it clear that these actions will continue on unabated for some time. This is because the Black community, in spite of the successes to this point – including the firing of the top cop and the Department of Justice investigation – recognizes that there are many more issues in need of resolution. These unresolved issues comprise a collective Black community wish list of items that cannot be purchased at a store on North Michigan Avenue. These items are listed below.

L aquan McDonald And Beyond • The appointment of an independent prosecutor for the trial of policeman Jason Van Dyke for the execution of Laquan McDonald. • The immediate resignation of Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez and a complete and thorough federal investigation of her office and its handling of police shootings of Blacks. • A Department of Justice investigation of the Independent Police Review Authority’s (IPRA) handling of the Laquan McDonald case and its overall

Crime And Violence

A Black Chicago Christmas Wish List handling of shootings of Blacks. Is this an independent agency or an agency totally controlled by the mayor? • A Department of Justice investigation of the Corporation Counsel’s office and its role in the lack of prosecutions of policemen in the execution of Blacks. • A Department of Justice investigation of the testing, hiring and promotion of Blacks in the Chicago Police Department. Should the testing process of potential policemen be done by an ethnically and racially diverse independent body of professionals that are sworn to fairness? • An investigation of the City Council in its role of approval of cash payments to families of victims of police executions. • The opening of all the files and videos of police executions of Blacks for the last 10 years. • A Department of Labor investigation of Chicago policemen’s union contract. Is it legal and constitutional for policemen in the City of Chicago to have more rights and privileges that amount to cover-ups without consequences?

04 December 23 - 29, 2015 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

• A Department of Justice investigation of the Mayor’s Office to ascertain his role in the cover-up of the McDonald case and the dozens of other cases involving police executions of Blacks.

“Black citizens are waiting for millennials to join forces with their elders and begin grooming a candidate to succeed Mayor Rahm Emanuel.” Public Education • A peaceful and just settlement of the contract disputes between the Chicago Teachers Union and the city. • An elected and independent school board that has the control of the budget and policy making powers.

• An immediate moratorium on the opening of new charter schools. • A contractual arrangement with Chicago area universities to form a training institute for current and potential school principals to avoid another Barbara Byrd-Bennett fiasco. • The equal funding of all public schools based upon need. • The mandatory teaching of civics and geography by trained teachers in these fields in every public school in the city. Housing And

Public Finance • An immediate accounting of all TIF funds and an explanation of how these funds have benefited or not benefited the Black community. • An immediate accounting of the city’s attempts to build low and moderate income housing, as well as its operations of the remaining public housing. • A public explanation of the recently passed city budget that will detail the benefits for the Black community.

• An end to the rampant violence and crime that plagues the Black community. An end to the gang and unexplained violence by Blacks on Blacks. No more Chi-Raq, real or fictional! • The federal government declaration of, and a real commitment to, the elimination of the dumping of drugs and guns in the Black community. It is clear that the major underlying reason for the violence in the Black community is the fact that there is no real effort on the part of the city, state, and federal government to interdict and eliminate the dumping of illegal guns and drugs in Black neighborhoods. This dereliction of government is in spite of the fact that it has the most sophisticated global technical detection devices on the planet and the military capability. The Black community wants to know why this interdiction has not occurred. • A major reduction in the hunger for and consumption of illegal drugs within the Black community. The foundation of these wishes is the need for a social revolution in the Black community and the city as a whole in order for the Black community to thrive and grow! Be clear – the majority of Black citizens are waiting for the millennials to join forces with their elders and begin grooming a candidate to succeed Mayor Rahm Emanuel, whether he is forced to resign or if he survives to serve out his term.

I’m thinking about my editorial meeting with my staff and what they said: “Kai, it’s the holidays; people need a break from all that’s been going on. Can we be a little lighter?” I heard them, yet I know there is no rest for the weary. Will the holidays lighten the hearts of the families of Laquan McDonald, Freddie Gray, Sandra Bland, Ronald Johnson, Rickey Williams, Phillip Coleman and on and on? I think not. I shared this sentiment with my Facebook friends and they responded with clarity and vision. Their insight and commitment to change grounded me and encouraged me to continue to push full steam ahead.

Mahki Sahn: “The Defender should always be the ears, eyes and voice of our community. There is no time to be light nor to rest. These are the times the Defender was made for. It’s a fight now, if not a war. So we must DEFEND ourselves from complacency. The climate is ripe; we must seize the moment.” Lena Cole Dennis: “I think not!” Harold E. Take note that the enemy never takes a holiday break!” Wanda Wright: “They bedda recognize ... ain’t no daze off for authentic press folk! tidbit has roots in the U.S. Constitution and has set the precedent for relations between Blacks and Whites in America. This precept underlines the way Whites have thought and acted towards Blacks since the beginning of slavery in America. Unfortunately, though slavery was abolished, the psychology that drove slavery continues. It is this thinking of being superior to others – in particular to Blacks, who, according to White ideology, reside at the bottom of the barrel and are not worthy of humane treatment. The systems in place are meant to uphold that sense of superiority and promote opportunities, progress and success for Whites while suppressing them for others. Do we believe that every White person wakes up daily and thinks, “What can I do to make Black life difficult?” No, but what we do know is that most White people take advantage of the racist disparity of privilege that is intricately woven and insidious within the fabric of American society and fosters the horror of racism. We keep looking for the helping hand to come from the very people who enjoy the benefits and amenities of the system that impairs

our growth and advancement.

he Façade Of Equal T Opportunity Slavery prevented the educating of slaves because it meant enhancing the slaves’ independence and ability to think outside the box that slavery created. Such reaching beyond slavery was not something slave masters wanted from their slaves. Today, Blacks enjoy the façade of equal opportunity and educational opportunities that lead to one’s eventual freedom. Truth is, what we witness is the lack of resources compared to those in other communities. We keep trying to make sense of why 50 schools were closed in our neighborhoods, leaving our children with fewer schools to attend. We were informed that the schools were operating under conditions that were not up to code, that the physical facilities were decrepit and dangerously unsafe; and that they were failing academically. So the question should have been, “Why is that?” Why were the schools in our communities allowed to fall into such states of decay? And what does the city plan to do about it? We may have done better to dewww.chicagodefender.com

E-NOTES JUMP We may have done better to demand financial support to build new schools to replace those that were closed, rather than expending energy to stop their closing. We should have demanded an initial transitional plan and a long-term plan to replace school for school over a period of time. It is important to see this for what it is. It is the slave master not providing education for Blacks, thereby decreasing the possibility for Black opportunity and advancement in American society. Instead it creates an environment of lack, which fosters poverty and depravity that breeds crime, drugs and gangs formation.

Free Prison Labor The lack of resources helps to continue the myth of Blacks as inferior. The lack of concern and sincere interest in the overall well-being and welfare of Black youth is very visible when you check the numbers. They are quick to identify our young boys as hyper and having special needs that demand medication. Statistics show that Black boys are targeted and tagged by age 8 to be headed towards juvenile detention and then prison. Public schools have become a breeding ground for privatized prison labor, a system very similar to, if not the same as, plantation slavery. So schools, in effect, have become the incubator for free labor. The failed educational structure for Blacks impacts generations. For every woman who is not educated, she fails to teach her children the value of education. Malcolm X said, “When you educate a woman you educate a nation because woman as mother is the first teacher.” So uneducated women do not push the educational agenda and their children get trapped in the maze of doom, therefore not advancing the status of Black success. The boys go off to prison while the girls get pregnant and raise generation after generation of uneducated, unskilled and angry youth who www.chicagodefender.com

continue the chain of misery that adds to the terror that converges upon our community from within as well as from outside it. Black-on-Black crime emerges at heights that top the charts, while police abuse and brutality against Black members of the community soars. And the officials point the finger at the communities that suffer, blaming them.

“We have to recognize that their system is helping them succeed at our expense.”

Change The Strategy Families that live in these communities under such conditions suffer at the hands of the system. For decades now they have cried out, voted and elected those they thought would push change, hoping for a better future. But we’ve been going about this all wrong. They cannot help us. Not like that. We have to change the way we are going about it. We have to recognize that the system was not created to help or assist us. Sure, some get through, but not enough. We have to recognize that their system is helping them succeed at our expense. We have to fight for our advancement by teaching our youth the value of education, entrepreneurship, skills, the value of land, and natural resources. Then we have to make sure that they are all available. We have to appreciate and understand the power of “separate but equal” as a choice.

We must teach, train, take on apprentices, mentor and create the educational, employment and internship opportunities. We have to rebuild our communities and take back our children, save them from the abyss. We have to build alternative educational opportunities like the Barbara Sizemore and Betty Shabazz charter schools that teach the basics, but with a special emphasis on Black history and self-determination. The thread that ties all this together is the 3/5ths of a human rule. This gives credence for the lack of resources provided to Black communities. It helps to push the free labor piece, as well as the cop killer agenda to rid the city of its bad seed. It justifies the act of murder because certainly, Blacks are not worthy of equality. Some of this is conscious and some is simply programmed into the psyche. Either way, the result is the continued destruction of Black lives. Deep within the White psyche, Blacks are not quite human and certainly not worthy of equality. This is why certain White elected officials have adamantly refused to accept Barack Obama as the President, and sought to undermine him every step of the way. It has been their intention to see to it that he fails, by their own admission. They refuse to follow a Black (man), who certainly is not their equal, much less their boss. It is just not in their DNA to comprehend that reality. If you imagine a world with no upward mobility, then you are envisioning the Black experience for most. We are left to do for ourselves. But we must cease merely reacting and act strategically, with measurable goals and objectives.

and those that are not, and which ones we can curtail temporarily and still move forward. We must ask the question of whether it is more advantageous to us for Rahm to resign or to stay in office. How do we make this work for us? Do we have Rahm where we want him? If he resigns, whom, then, do you put in office? Another one just like the other one? Ask yourself how was Mayor Daley different, not personality-wise, but in his

contribution to make Black life in Chicago better? Perhaps we can agree to work with Rahm, who we demand will not run again, and while we work through this term, identify who we want to put in office. Our youth have stood and are standing proud with the recognition that “Black Lives Matter.” We must embrace and assist them in their efforts to make a difference.

Earlier Days Starting out in the music business at 16 coming out of my sophomore year of high school was surreal. At the time, I wouldn’t have called myself “technically” in the business, but a kid participating in a youth based program at WGCI and eventually interning under the guidance of then Music Director, Barbara Prieto. It didn’t seem like I was choosing a business to be in; it felt like the business was choosing me. When I first met Tim, that was the same energy that struck me when I saw him spinning in the back of Howard Bailey’s Wicker Park record store, the

REMEMBERING DJ TIMBUCK2: Beat Parlor. He was a skinny, babyfaced and quiet Black kid just into the music. He wouldn’t say much – he just waved when he saw me and delved back into his music. I asked Duro Wicks, the manager of the store, “Who is the kid?” and he jokingly answered, “Oh, that’s Tim. We’ve adopted him.” Every week, I would come to the Beat Parlor – making my rounds as a street promoter, dropping off the latest new music or doing a display – and every weekend, Tim would be spinning while customers shopped. He was spinning everything. His music selection was way before his time, but he was experimenting and finding ways to blend it into his sets. Some would call him a “purist” DJ, the kind of DJ that spun what intrigued him based on discovery and originality, not on what commercialism dictated. Tim attended Gordon Technical High School, which is now DePaul College Prep, and grew up in Bucktown, where he would often frequent and learn the ropes at Beat Parlor Records, not far from his home. Howard Bailey, owner of Beat Parlor Records, remembers how he first met Tim: “I met him when he was nine or 10 through his sister when we would play cards at my friend Terrence’s house. One day, his sister brought him to my store when was about 13 or 14 years old,” Bailey said. “He kept asking me for a job. “I told him, ‘If you want a job, you have to start out sweeping the floors.’ He swept the floors. He knew he would get his turn. He wanted to DJ so bad and wanted to be in that environment, so he swept the floors. From that point on, every time someone came to the store trying to do a promotional or charity event, we said, ‘Tim will do it!’”

Doing it His Way Mastering His Craft

One of Tim’s main DJ role models and mentors was Anthony Khan, known as The Twilite Tone. Khan’s no nonsense approach to spinning music – a cross between Old School House, underground Hip Hop and hot R&B joints – was unique. It bridged the gap between the South Side and North Side kids. He adapted to the New York style of chanting over the mic during his set, which Chicago rarely did until Khan elevated the style. Tim soon became his protégé. Back then, he was not “club legal,” but he was a part of The Twilite Tone’s inner circle. This circle included some familiar names in the music and club promoter world – John Monopoly, Don C., Happy, Shareff Williams, and Reno. The former Dem Dare member would often have him warm up the crowd before he would bless the turntables. Before there was the easy flow of banging out songs on your laptop, there were actually Technics and then Pioneer CDJs. I got to know Timbuck2 while he was mastering his craft on the turntables and before he was knee-deep in the hustle of business. I witnessed someone who eagerly wanted to prove that he could hold his own among some of the best DJs in the business. Gradually, his name became familiar with his peer group and he became the resident DJ at Slick’s Lounge, a

new Near North club owned by the man who gave Tim his first break – Howard Bailey. “Slick’s was his first primetime residential gig. Black promoters rarely got clubs on the weekend in the city. We got them during the week. Hiring Tim wasn’t a fluke – I was so tired of listening to the same DJs. I had all of the masters around me. I wanted the young master and the new master. So, I had both Andre Hatchett and Tim. I don’t know what I was thinking about,” Bailey laughs. “Between the two of them, they drove me crazy. The energy was always on nine. It was the first time people could actually stay in one club all night and listen to everything while taking a musical journey from the beginning to the end. Andre would come in playing disco and Tim would wrap the night up playing hip hop.” Slick’s Lounge was the hottest nightclub that catered to a diverse group of hip patrons and broke the segregation mold – various groups came together under one roof to party. Celebrities and national recording artists would drop through and Tim was soon the DJ that many wanted to hear. In any given set, you could hear him blend Diana Ross’s Sweetest Hangover to Mobb Deep’s Shook Ones – he could read the crowd. But, interrupt his flow and he could shut you down or have you escorted out of the DJ booth. Record promoters would often approach him in the booth with their latest priorities and Tim wasn’t into the interruption when he was in his zone. In 2004, he attracted the attention of former WGCI Program Director Elroy Smith and Music Director and Assistant Program Director, Tiffany Green. They wanted to add a fresh vibe to the mixshow roster and really loved Tim’s style. www.chicagodefender.com

The adjustment of creating a mix for radio airplay and spinning what you want in the club was not an easy task and Tim came under some criticism. His moniker of “Youngest in Charge” became a signature badge – being the youngest DJ to grace the mixshow airwaves. Despite the grumblings of the other veteran DJs, Green worked with Jones on adapting his style to a more radio friendly audience without losing his authentic sound. Once again, he wanted to prove that he could hold his own with other seasoned DJs and often his shyness would be misinterpreted as “standoffish” and reserved.

My Personal Connection At the time, I was always helping out DJs and I thought of Tim as my little brother. He would call me for advice or just to see what I was working on. The Mixshow Power Summit (MPS) was a popular music conference that brought all the top national urban radio mixshow DJs together at key destination resorts for a weekend of record label showcases, panels and overall power networking. One year, the MPS was being held in Puerto Rico and Tim hadn’t yet built solid relationships with industry executives enough to receive callbacks. He was a good kid and anything I could do to help him was a no-brainer. With a plane ticket in hand, Tim was on his way to Puerto Rico. When he returned, he called me, excited about the many people he met. But what made his entire weekend was having a chance to talk with platinum producer and artist Pharrell. He said, “Mary, we just sat at the bar and started talking about life. Our families, our girls, and other things besides music. It was so refreshing to sit there and talk to one of my favorite producers.” Tim loved Pharrell’s style and unique approach to being a trendsetter without trying hard. I have a feeling that conversation probably influenced Tim’s brand and not being afraid of expressing himself unapologetically. Some felt his style evolved when he began flying around the country and spinning at exclusive celebrity parties for Kanye West and other notables. But, Timbuck2 had his own fashion palette that was clean, stylish and b-boy chic – complimentary to his love of sneakers and tattoos.

Tim, The Heavy Hitter

There aren’t many DJs that Pharris Thomas will give a great deal of praise to, but Timbuck2 was added as new member of DJ Enuff’s elite group of DJs, The Heavy Hitters, in 2004. Becoming the youngest member of the DJ collective was a tremendous honor for him. Pharris knew there was something special about him. “Timbuck2 was an awesome person as well as one of the dopest DJs to ever touch the turntables. He was a true ‘turntablist,’ Pharris said. “Even when everyone else turned to Seratos (DJ software program), he kept his turntables and kept his wax. He had an old school soul – it was the element of a true DJ. He always wanted to keep that wax and that real feel.” Pharris said it was the influence of his family that laid his deep roots for loving music, something that is rare in new DJs coming up today. “I picked him because he was one the most creative DJs that I ever heard. He wasn’t scared www.chicagodefender.com

to express himself through music,” Pharris continued. “His passion and knowledge for music was so wide. Everything I saw with how Tim spun music, I felt it. When I would go to hear him play, I knew that deep down this guy belonged with our crew. He was one of us.” Over the years, Tim continued building his name and became one of the most sought after DJs, spinning at both high profile events and, in the last five years, holding a Tuesday night residency at West Town’s Beauty Bar – “Timbuck2 Tuesdays.” He kept his circle small to maintain a level of trust, privacy and sanity. Although we didn’t talk as much as we used to, I felt we didn’t have to because every time I would see him, our hugs explained everything. When I would hug him, I would always whisper in his ear, “I’m so proud of you!” We both accepted special honors three years ago from the Crown Royal brand as Chicago innovators, along with Duce Powell and Leon Deniz. All of us were staying consistent and diligent in our goals of impacting the Chicago music and nightlife community. As Tim took time off to focus on getting healthy and fight his renal cancer, there was an obvious void both on the airwaves and in the Chicago nightlife scene. For artists trying to break their music in Chicago, there weren’t many DJs that set the bar as high as Timbuck2. If he played your song, that meant he actually liked your song and if he liked your song—it was the gold seal.

His Own Words

During Monday evening’s WGCI broadcast, they shared a personal letter written by Tim about his ordeal. After the doctor gave Tim and his parents the grim diagnosis on November 14, 2014, Tim contemplated his experience. An excerpt from the letter read, “I shed my tears about it, but quickly let go of those feelings because I knew it would do me no good. I knew from that point on, I had to be stronger than I’ve ever been. My life would be altered – nothing would be the same. “I allowed absolutely no pity in my life because I knew that God chose me for this new journey for a reason. I quickly eliminated any and all negative energies and vibes I had in my life. “It’s never been in my nature to lay down in a fight with anyone, but let me tell you this, I’ve never experienced so much pain in my life from all of the procedures, surgeries, not being able to walk, sometimes eat, swallow, not being able to think straight – chemo, radiation. “Mind you, I’m not telling you part of my story for pity, but moreso for awareness. Most young people, mainly men, have a problem going to the hospital. If my mother had not forced me to get up and go to the doctor, I would be dead,” Jones wrote. The music business is a rough and challenging business. Our passion can drive us to the brink of pushing everything in us to keep our edge. Tim was always making sure he kept that edge, and in the process gained the respect, the loyalty and love of those that may have doubted his ability to hold his own. He proved that age was just a number and reminded others to never judge a book by its cover—if you open that book, you might just discover all the treasures of life. Dr. John Lott Jr., a Washington, D.C.-based Second Amendment expert, is well aware of the disparities of such laws and how they impact minority communities. “Illinois’ concealed handgun system makes it particularly difficult for the very people who are most likely to be victims of violent crime to get a license to defend themselves,” Lott says. He noted, for instance, “in Illinois, the cost of getting a license is about $450 to $500. In neighboring Indiana, the entire cost is $49.95.” The Chicago Defender looked at the latest data available from the Illinois State Police to see concealed carry license patterns. At the city level, analyzing the data based on zip codes, it appears as though upper middle-class White and poor neighborhoods have one thing in common – the highest concentrations of concealed carry permit holders.

ARTS & CULTURE Kai EL’Zabar

“We are fortunate to have had the dance leadership that has come through Muntu, that has been able to grasp, learn, perform and choreograph through their own individual interpretation of song and dance to breathe new life into what has been – from Alyo Tolbert to our current artistic director P. Amaniyea Payne who came to us originally as a guest choreographer.”

Defender Executive Editor

Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago has closed out an era fraught with challenges and the agony of defeat, but mostly the triumph of achievement and success. The 2015 Fall Concert & Gala was the close of yet another chapter as Joan Gray, company president, and board of director chairperson Leana B. Flowers, passed the baton. It was a joyous occasion celebrating much done and much more to come. The Saturday evening of “One Root, Many Branches,” held at Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts on the University of Chicago campus, opened with introductions acknowledging the work and efforts of those who have contributed to what the company is and has become. The Chicago based dance company was founded in 1972 as the manifestation of visionary dancer and artistic director Alyo Tolbert, who studied under and danced with Darlene Blackburn. Darlene had carefully informed her students and troupe that African Americans’ expressions through dance, whether conscious or not, is directly influenced by our African ancestry. With that influence in hand, Alyo established Muntu very carefully, choreographing dance compositions that were indigenous to its African country and tribe of origin as well as the interpretation of that as African Americans. Muntu translated from the Bantu language means, “the essence of humanity.” So in all that it wishes to express through its

Muntu Gets New Leadership work, the company pursues reflecting and touching their audiences throughout the world with that essence. Today at 43 years strong, they can boast that it is the nation’s longest operating African dance company and has grown to be one of the most artistically accomplished stable dance companies in Chicago. Muntu has achieved a critically acclaimed reputation locally, nationally and internationally. Much of the company’s appeal is due to its consistent authentic expression clothed in progression without sacrificing the value of antiquity and tradition.

14 December 23 - 29, 2015 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

More importantly, they have managed to do as is intended by the Africans, which is to keep what is good while growing through improvement upon that which is already good. So Muntu has only gotten better presenting artistic statements of cultural and historical significance. The high energy and excitement that catapulted it to fame and popularity continues and yet it is a different company than what it was in 1972, 1982, 1992, and 2002. It remains colorful and engaging and is highly regarded for its performance authenticity of progressive interpretations of con-

temporary and traditional African and African-American dance, music and folklore. In addition much respect is given to the company for its innovative repertory and its preservation of the ancient while emerging with new expressions through dance that capture the spirit and energy of the African, Caribbean, and the entire African Diaspora cultural traditions. “We carefully research the cultural and historical significance of the dances we perform in relation to the societies from which they originate,” said outgoing President Gray.

Payne joined Muntu in 1987 and has been artistic director, ever since. Her exposure and experience encompasses a wide spectrum of dance styles from many cultures, including Costa Rica, Brazil, Columbia, Cuba, South Africa, Guinea, Senegal and more. Amaniyea’s depth and range no doubt have been vital as the principal architect of the company’s technical growth, expanded repertory and national reputation. That dynamic team of three women has done much to ground the company and secure its future. Flowers has been with the company almost 30 years and Gray joined the company first as a principle dancer, moved on to executive director, then to President/CEO After 43 years, they have passed the baton on, but will remain involved to assist the new leadership as required. Sidney Dillard, Partner of Loop Capital, replaces Flowers as board chair, while Denise Brown, formerly with Daniel J. Nellum Youth Services, replaces Gray as president. The gala evening was truly a night to remember--a sold-out crowd and standing ovations. Proceeds will help to establish the “Fund for the Future” to ensure the continued viability of Muntu Dance Theatre as the leadership passes hands. www.chicagodefender.com

NATIONAL NEWS NNPA President Dr. Benjamin F Chavis Jr. NNPA Contributing Writer

The financial services industry is a vast matrix of banks, credit and debit cards products, venture capital and mortgage companies, investment firms, and other financial institutions that compete to provide services to over 326 million people in the United States and millions more around the world. There is a very old saying that posits: “How you manage your money will determine how well your heart will beat.” For 100.4 million African Americans and Latino Americans combined that spend in access of $2.4 trillion annually as consumers in the U.S. marketplace, the daily and hourly financial management of our money is an important issue. The RushCard developed by Russell Simmons is an effective and efficient money management tool potentially for millions of “unbanked” and “underbanked” people throughout the United States. According to a 2014 FDIC report, 22% of unbanked households used a prepaid card, compared with 13% of underbanked households. I have always emphasized and promoted greater diversity and inclusion in the financial services industry. But inclusivity also means more than limiting involvement primarily to only customers or users of financial products and www.chicagodefender.com

RushCard Empowers People to Help Manage Their Money

services. We also need more people of color and others to be owners and entrepreneurs in the growing financial services industry. Russell Simmons is a global entrepreneur. I have personally known Russell for more than three decades. He continues to have the highest possible integrity and commitment to help people improve their quality of life. His entrance into the financial services industry was timely and providential. For over the past 10 years, the RushCard has steadily emerged as an invaluable money management prepaid debit card for hundreds of thousands of card users across the nation. RushCard is owned by Simmons’ company, UniRush, LLC.

Not withstanding recent computer software glitches that have now been resolved concerning the use of the RushCard, it is my opinion that the RushCard today will be a productive and very useful prepaid debit card to use for each member of your family. Why? First, because the RushCard meets the Visa Clear Prepaid standards for clearly communicated fees and consumer protections. Secondly, if you go to www. RushCard.com you will see a very user friendly online process that explains how you can apply for the prepaid debit card. The mission of the RushCard is publicly affirmed to “Empower our members by providing products and services that enable them to achieve control and

realize their personal hopes and financial goals.” Thirdly, the RushCard has been around longer than most prepaid cards and has achieved over the past decade a number of innovative firsts in the industry to better serve its card users, including but not limited to, the following: • One of the first prepaid cards to offer direct deposit. • One of the first prepaid cards to offer check-writing capabilities to its members. • One of the first prepaid cards to offer cash loading at more than 35,000 MoneyGram® locations, nationwide. • One of the first prepaid cards to offer comprehensive money management tools that make it eas-

ier to track balances, create monthly budgets, and analyze spending. There are a wide variety of prepaid debit cards available for people to have an opportunity to select for their personal and family use. My family members use the RushCard because it is user friendly, but importantly we use the RushCard because of Russell Simmons trustworthy leadership in the financial services industry. Consumer Report recently named the RushCard the 4th highest rated prepaid card used as a substitute for a bank account. Russell recently stated, “As a thank you for sticking with us and to support your cash needs during the upcoming holiday season, we’ve declared a Fee Holiday Season, meaning from November 1, 2015 to February 29, 2016, you can use your RushCard without incurring any fees. You don’t need to take any extra steps to participate in this special offer. HEALTH

Black America Donna Battle Pierce Syndicated Columnist, (Black Press Syndicate)

Your Family’s Health

Legacy Starts With You! Eleana Elan Defender Contributing Writer I have a girlfriend who fed her children candy all the time as an appeaser. Once I asked her, “Why do you feed your children candy? Don’t you realize it’s bad for their teeth? The sugar just stays in their little mouths sitting.” She answered matter of factly, “What difference does it make? They’re going to lose their baby teeth anyway.” My reply was, “True, however you are establishing the habits that will affect their health for the rest of their lives.” I still recall her look of shock and sudden realization. Parents, we are the first teachers. All mammals learn from their parents. Mammals must be taught survival. Managing our health as humans is directly related to our diet, environment, socio-economic status and education. With that in mind, you may want to think about those top cardiovascular health issues that affect your community and ask yourself how you can improve it? Clearly, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, hypertension and obesity are the top cardiovascular health issues affecting the Black community today. You can improve your state of health by raising awareness, but unfortunately, in our communities, so many people are oblivious to the impact of these diseases unless they are affected by them directly. Your first step of action is making the change yourself. Research and identify what a healthy diet looks like for you and your family. Then you must implement it. That includes establishing time to add exercise to your routine. Share this activity with your family no matter what their ages. Toddlers are great to put in your walk. You can put them in a stroller, go to your park and then take them out and let them walk with you for about 10 minutes as a warmup for yourself. Put them back in the stroller, stretch, and then push that stroller and get your 25- to 45-minute walk in. Start out slowly, putting in 20 minutes at first and work up to more. As the children grow, so will their length of time to walk. Of course they can ride along on a tricycle, etc., as they grow, adapting to your commitment to exercise. This time spent can be a family effort. By making it so, you are creating a value and teaching its importance to all members of your family in taking care of their overall health. Of course, if there is no park accessible, then walk the neighborhood. When it’s cold outside, substitute your walking outdoors with indoors alternatives. Those who live in highrises can walk their stairs, and if you live in a three-story flat, then walk up and down the stairs. Fathers and mothers can even do this: You can use your infant as a weight to strengthen your arms. Hold your baby with both hands and extend them in front of you. Raise them up slowly and lower them slowly. Do this 10 times, then increase to 20 reps.

As the infant grows so does the weight, so you will be increasing your strength and developing muscle tone. You can also hold them and move them to your right and to your left. So much is transpiring here when you do this. You spend quality time with your child, while they contribute to your health and well being, and at the same time, you are acquainting them with the movement and rhythm of exercises. To help develop your core and abdominal muscles, sit in a sturdy chair and with no hands, rise and return to the seat. Do this up and down exercise 10 to 20 times. If you like, you can add the baby, holding it extended in front of you as you sit and stand. As you complete this series of reps, remain standing on the last rep and then lift the baby up from the chest level to above your head slowly up and down. There are so many creative ways to get your workout in. You just have to think about what is available to you. I remember my cousin Elaine, a cheerleader who would use her 6’5” boyfriend to strengthen her legs. Laying flat on her back she would place her bare feet oh his abdomen and he’d lean forward as she’d lift him up and down. Obviously you have to find someone willing to help you in this (husbands work!). As a parent to young children, I’d stay away from candy and the all the salted snacks, like potato and corn chips and so on. Slice apples (make sure they’re organic) because they are naturally sweet and feed them to your children; bananas, oranges, pears, peaches, grapes, raisins and dates all serve your children better in the long run in building healthy minds and bodies. In our family, my mother did not buy cakes or cookies; she did bake them for Sunday dinner dessert once a week and mainly she’d baked fresh fruit cobblers slightly sweetened allowing for the natural sweetness of the fruit to sweeten the dish. Consequently, none of my siblings have “sweet tooths.” Instead, we usually reach for fruit as our preference. We love eating fresh tomatoes, green onions and cucumbers raw. My sister even likes eating raw potatoes. We eat our sweet potatoes baked mostly because that’s how our mother prepared her candied yams, which were not candied with sugars, but rather, its own sweetness. You bake until almost tender after poking holes in them first. Remove from the oven and slice, then place in a baking dish, sprinkle with a cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg mix and make a honey or maple syrup/orange juice mix that you pour over once baked. Delicious! Getting back to the old school, cleaning habits can change our bodies. Sweeping with a broom, running the vacuum and beating that flour mix for gravy, cakes cupcakes cookies or what ever, makes for beautiful toned arms and, believe it or not, it helps to tone the stomach muscles as well. Anyway you get the point. Commit to your best health. Work with what you’ve got. Be consistent.

Standing in line at the Fed-Ex office to send off a big fruitcake and three dozen cookies, I couldn’t help but feel my grandmother’s approval over the box addressed to her “baby girl,” my Aunt Sandra, the last surviving family member from the maternal side of my mom’s generation. These butter cookies, now more important than fruitcake on our family holiday dessert tables, began with a Christmas cookie press gift from my mother to my sisters and me. Mom worked with us to replicate the Scandinavian-inspired procedure she had learned about in one of her favorite women’s magazines, but after that first year, she left the shaping and baking up to us. Decades later, after fine-tuning the simple recipe, and learning to never substitute the butter; to use enough flour and chill dough if needed to easily press on to a cookie sheet and to release

the cookies on to parchment-lined or ungreased pans, these multi-shaped, buttery pastries remain an important part of the edible holiday gift baskets I share with family and friends during Kwanzaa and Christmas celebrations. One day in a December decades away, considering the cookies we’re baking together next week, I imagine Kayla or Satthapi or Ellis or Aaron baking extra dozens to make sure this family baker receives a homemade package of what’s become one of our family’s favorite holiday traditions. I’m sure they won’t have to stand in line with a package, perhaps they’ll send it by delivery drone. Or in an even better baking scenario, this family tradition will be hand delivered to family and friends to celebrate Christmas and Kwanzaa.

Pressed for Holiday Cookies 4 1/2 cups flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 pound butter (4 sticks) 1 1/4 cup sugar 2 eggs 2 teaspoons almond extract Halved candied cherries, colorful sprinkles, chopped nuts, optional Cookie Icing, recipe follows, optional

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Sift flour and salt into a large bowl; set aside. Cream butter and sugar with a mixer on medium speed; add eggs and almond extract, beating until very light and fluffy, about 8 minutes. Stir in flour, stirring just until combined. Transfer dough to a cookie press fitted with desired blade. (Chill dough in food storage bags for later use.) Follow press instructions to place cookies on to parchment-lined or ungreased cookie sheets. Should any of the presses mis-fire, form into balls of dough and flatten with the palm of your hand. Sprinkle dough with colored sugar, cookie sprinkles, halved candied cherries or any other decoration, as desired. Bake, turning cooking sheet after 4 to 5 minutes. Continue baking a total of 7 to 8 minutes. Remove from oven. Cool on pan 5 minutes. Remove from

pan; cool completely on wire rack. Add piped icing as desired to some cookies. Makes about 8 to 10 dozen cookies, depending on size. Note: to make Cookie Icing, combine 1 cup confectioners’ sugar, 1tablespoon of orange juice, cream or milk and 1 teaspoon almond extract in a small bowl. Stir until smooth, adding scant drops of juice as needed to reach desired consistency. Add to a pastry bag or spoon into a clear food storage bag, pressing the icing down to one corner. Gently snip off a tiny corner of the bag to pipe icing on to cookies. Concussion

The controversial film Concussion starring Will Smith was written off by the NFL as little more than a big screen whitewash of what is now recognized as a life-or-death issue. Like the tobacco companies that refused to admit the dangers of their product they consistently denied the detriment to the human physical well-being until completely found out. Similarly the NFL has run from the facts that show their game and the attitude towards the athletes as little more than gladiators impacts the players Rumors prevailed that Director Peter Landesman’s NFL drama “Concussion” -- about the scientist who first sounded the alarm on the long-term danger of repeated head trauma suffered by professional football players -- had been quietly deflated in an effort to assuage the fears of the NFL. Truth is that can be farthest from the truth than saying that NFL signed off on “Concussion.” First of all, what director gives into that sort of hogwash? And the fact the league felt the need to set rumors of such flying is exactly why you should go see the film.

Will Smith in Concussion

Landesman’s film is based on compelling real events exposing the compassion capable of human beings who give a damn about people, which is impossible to ignore when compared to those who could care less. Will Smith loses himself in the role of Bennet Omalu, the Nigerian-born forensic pathologist who first discovered the link between repeated head trauma and the epidemic of depression and other mental disorders that have led far too often to the early deaths of retired NFL players. Yep gone is the player con artist in Focus, or the charming Matchmaker in Hitch, or the cocky boxer in Ali, and even the driven scientist in I am Legend. Will Smith disappears and becomes a doctor of the highest integrity concerned with the overall good of people. At one point he, says, “Do the right thing.”

AAABNA Kwanzaa Celebration will honor community leaders; Debra Vines, Jody Bady and Issac Lewis Saturday, December 26 the day of Kujichagulia, meaning “Self Determination,” at Ice Theaters, North Lawndale located at 3330 W. Roosevelt Rd. Pastor Ira Acree is the keynote speaker with entertainment

“Concussion” is at its best when it presents the discovery of Omalu’s work, and his commitment to get people to acknowledge that what he uncovered was in fact true. There is a rhythm or timing issue that creates a lull in the second half and yet it doesn’t ruin what is actually an excellent movie worth seeing. The film takes a huge chance as a biographical story of Omalu, whose name is not familiar to moviegoers, even though his work has been reported upon thoroughly over the past decade. However, with that said, Landesman and Smith tell the story behind that story, with triumph. The film makes it easy for you to embrace the importance and significance of efforts of men like Omalu -- as well as changing how you look at football in the future.
