CITY NEWS Robotic Labs Piloted at Two Riverdale Schools Dolton West Elementary District 148 administrators, teachers and students are getting some hands-on experience with robotics. The District has implemented Acellus STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Robotic Labs at Washington Elementary and Junior High Schools. The labs are being piloted this year at these two Riverdale schools. They are two of 10 District 148 schools. District 148 is one of the first school districts in Illinois to have the Acellus STEM Robotics Labs. The school system is looking forward to implementing the labs District wide. “We are overjoyed to deliver such a unique and essential educational experience to our young people. It is imperative that we help prepare them for college and career options in the STEM fields. We love and appreciate having the ability to fully equip our students with cutting edge technology in the classrooms,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kevin J. Nohelty. Exhibit Confronts Issues of Race in the United States The Chicago History Museum offers an unprecedented look at the history, science and social experiences of race and racism in the United States with the exhibit, RACE: Are We So Different?, which opened last week. “Race, arguably, remains the most contentious and divisive issue in American society. This exhibition is critically important here, at the Chicago History Museum, and now as contemporary events continue to remind us that our claims of a post-racial society are not yet realized,” said Joy Bivins, director of curatorial affairs at the Chicago History Museum. “RACE will offer Museum visitors a chance to explore the science and history of a concept that has had and continues to have a real and devastating impact in people’s lives, throughout the nation and in our own city.” RACE, developed by the American Anthropological Association in collaboration with the Science Museum of Minnesota, is the first national exhibition to tell the stories of race from the biological, cultural and historical points of view. Admission to RACE is included with regular Museum admission ($16 adults/ $14 seniors and students, and free for children 12 years of age and younger). Lori E. Lightfoot Endorses Chris Kennedy and Ra Joy Illinois Gubernatorial Candidate Chris Kennedy received the endorsement this week of Lori E. Lightfoot, chair of the Police Accountability Task Force and leading advocate for police reform and accountability. “Lori’s long been a champion of fairness and equality, and the city of Chicago is a better place becauseof her leadership. Lori fearlessly speaks truth to power and, with a government beholden to political insiders, her courage is critical to the future of Chicago,” Kennedy said. The campaign released a video endorsement from Lightfoot, a former federal prosecutor and partner at a Chicago law firm, stating the following in part: “They’re two men of tremendous integrity. I think their track record; their experiences really show and demonstrate that. They recognize that our state is fundamentally going in the wrong direction. Advocates Urge Illinois Supreme Court to Issue Rule Change to Stop Jailing People Due to Poverty On any given day, tens of thousands of people are incarcerated in county jails in Illinois. Most of these people are being incarcerated pretrial— meaning they have not been convicted of a crime and are only being incarcerated because they are too poor to post bond. In June, the state of Illinois passed the Bail Reform Act of 2017. In Cook County, Chief Judge Evans then issued a general order aimed at addressing widespread injustice in the county’s bond court. While advocates have welcomed these reforms, the reforms have failed to fully address the totality of the harms still being caused by Illinois’ unconstitutional money bail system. More than 70 advocates & community organizations, including former United States Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr., have joined The Coalition To End Money Bond and Cook County stakeholders in requesting that Illinois’ highest court take the lead on addressing this issue. In a letter to the Illinois Supreme Court Rules Committee, the diverse group asks the Committee to institute a proposed court rule that would require an evidentiary hearing and a finding by the judge that an accused person is able to afford the monetary bail amount before allowing a monetary bond to be set in any criminal case. The Coalition’s letter to the Illinois Supreme Court Rules Committee comes one month after Cook County Public Defender Amy Campanelli sent a letter requesting the same rule on behalf of her office and other county stakeholders including Board President Toni Preckwinkle, Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, Chief Judge Timothy Evans, State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, and Sheriff Tom Dart. An evaluation of Cook County’s bail practices prepared by Holder’s firm, Covington & Burling, was released in July 2017 and recommended promulgation of an Illinois Supreme Court Rule. “At every level of Illinois state and local government, there is agreement that Illinois’ bail system urgently needs reform. Legislators and local courts have made progress, but the most effective and permanent reforms will come from a Supreme Court rule,” said Sharlyn Grace of Chicago Appleseed Fund for Justice. #MeToo What Can You Do? What do you do when someone uninvitingly invades your personal space with their presence or with their words? For many-- both women and even men-- it is a feeling that unstraps you emotionally and psychologically, leaving a person wondering “What did I do wrong?” “Was it something I said to allow this form of harassment or abuse?’”

As children, we have been taught to trend thin with precaution against strangers. Today, we still teach our children to yell “Stranger, danger!” when they are in fear of someone attempting to take them against their will. But how do we teach our kids as they transition into adulthood to speak up and let your voice be heard? One of the main reasons for the unhealthy silence is

most cases of sexual harassment and assault in the work environment come from individuals we’re familiar with—a co-worker, a supervisor or a client. In the face of the #MeToo campaign, the Defender offers four stories from contributors who took a closer look at sexual harassment and what can be done to create a safer environment for all.

State Politics and Accountability By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer The latest wave of women and men stepping forward from the Harvey Weinstein fallout has flipped the script on a culture that has become embedded in many industries across the board. The California Legislative General Assembly opened Pandora’s box of public wrongdoing, which triggered multiple boxes becoming unhinged including the open letter by a female staffer accusing an Illinois House chamber leader of sexual harassment. The Me Too movement started 10 years ago by Tarana Burke, a Black woman who wanted to let others know of her experience of sexual assault to create a safe place of discussion and prevention. So, when actress Amber Anderson, one of 79 alleged victims of Weinstein used the #MeToo hashtag—it sparked the fuel to many victims standing on the platform of solidarity saying: “what do I have to lose?” In Springfield, it was only a matter of time when the match would light under someone’s bottom, exposing a behavior that has become all too familiar in the political realm. What was uncovered was 27 complaints filed by people who had experienced some form of on-the-job harassment or inappropriate behavior. All 27 complaints laid dormant for almost two years without an Inspector General, an office which investigates complaints involving State legislators and ethical practices—it’s also a position which is monitored by the General Assembly. Within the last two weeks, there have been immediate steps to prevent another public scandal revolving around inappropriate behavior among government staffers, public officials and lobbyists. Two bills have been introduced--HB4148, which approves a special hotline in place for complaints, and HR0687, which creates the Task Force on Sexual Discrimination and Harassment. Senator Heather Sterns (D-Chicago) says, “The legislation items that passed didn’t apply in the State Employee and Ethics Act. There was no discussion at all on sexual harassment as being something that should be or not be something we should be participating in having a policy rather than a requirement, which in this case is included in the State Officials and Employees Ethics Act…So, the law we passed, assuming Gov. Rauner signs it, would make that a requirement.” Sterns says this would include sexual harassment training but doesn’t feel it’s sufficient enough regarding how serious these allegations are from the complaints. Senator Toi Hutchinson (D-Chicago Heights) “We know there’s a lot of sexual harassment but not much is being reported and it’s hard to think you’re going to report when the structure that is set up to report is that you’re reporting it to an entity that reports to the legislators, who may be the one you’re having the problem with,” she says. The apprehension is real for women who are working administrators, or as a subcontractor for an agency or the few who own their own lobbyist agency to step forward. Knowing how difficult the decision is to encourage more people to step out, Senator Sterns adds: “I’ve certainly felt there is a lot of apprehension around it. You have real power dynamics going on and there are a lot of staffers and lobbyists who are concerned if they go forward, it could harm their ability to move up or get their legislation passed if they’re making a complaint.” Senator Toi Hutchinson (D-Chicago Heights) joins Senator Sterns along with other women in the Senate. “At the time, sexual harassment was not an express violation of the code. Which means that any of the 27 complaints probably don’t say sexual harassment. There are some other ethics complaints, or if they did, it wasn’t ‘harassment claim’.” Hutchinson says because these complaints were filed prior to the law passed, the new Inspector Genwww.chicagodefender.com

eral wouldn’t be able to take action. Filling the Inspector General’s role was a challenge in itself. “The inability for the state to move in any direction and the political gridlock on top of it. You’ve got to have both parties agree and they had three people who were asked that all turned it down. The political breakup of the commission on who that would be,” she explains. “There are no active complaints, meaning there are no active complaints until someone investigates it. If there is no one to investigate it, then there’s no active complaints. I think all of that ‘ridiculousness’ contributes to a big old perfect storm,” says Hutchinson. As the president of the National Conference of State Legislators, which is a bipartisan organization comprised of legislators from 50 states including both Democrats and Republican members, Senator Hutchinson understands this is an ongoing problem in other legislatives houses. She says, part of her role is to listen and collaborate with her colleagues across the aisle to find a solution to the rising complaints of sexual harassment. #HeToo: A Male’s Story of Survival By Charles Preston Defender Contributing Writer If you have been recently perusing social media and blog sites, there is a good chance that you have encountered “#MeToo.” The hashtag, created by social activist Tarana Burke and popularized on Twitter by famous actress Alyssa Milano, is a call for women to publicize their survivor stories of misogyny and rape culture to challenge both. Since this call, many of Hollywood’s notable men have been exposed as engaging in sexual predatory behavior and as rapists. But “#MeToo” has not empowered only women. Chicago State University student Omar-Karim Strong, 40, recently posted a Facebook status detailing his survivor story that was caused by the hands of a schoolmate. “What inspired me was going on Facebook and seeing all these stories,” said Strong. “I should share my story. I’m at a point where I feel that my story needs to be heard. I’m not riddled with shame to tell it.” Strong’s story stems from a history of traumatic childhood experiences. At the age of 13, before the incident, his soon-to-be abuser constantly bullied him. The violator, a child himself, would feign kindness to Strong in order to continue violent behavior. Strong described his younger self as viewed as “weak” and “too kind” by other kids growing up on the West Side of Chicago.

Strong says, “It was about power. As I look back on my experiences with this guy, his bullying, it was all about power. I was 13 when it happened. He had me in the hallway of the building that I grew up in. He was trying to gain some control over me, some type of power. He asked me to proceed to...but I said no. But then I was threatened with physical harm. I was extremely afraid. Instead of being dead, I went ahead and did it even though I didn’t want to.” Strong’s story broadens the general scope of #MeToo narratives. Strong is male and an adolescent abused him. Today, much of the conversation on sexual violence ignores boys harming boys. Strong believes that more male victims do not come forward because of how society views gender. “We’re viewed as big, strong, and tough,” says Strong. “That’s not even the reality. We look at men and boys as these hardened steel machines––that we’re invincible to situations like these. I grew up in an era where this was seen as invalid.” According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 1 in 71 men will be raped at some point in their lives but only 63 percent of victims report their rape to authorities. For Strong, disclosing his story was a challenging thought; he waited 10 years, when he was in college, before revealing his assault. “It was just really heavy on my mind. The first person I told was a college roommate. I had an intention on just getting it out there,” details Strong.

#MeToo: The Charming and Charismatic Woman By KayCee Shakur Defender Contributing Writer Female charm is something some of us have mastered-- speak softly, smile frequently, nod in agreement, etc. Some could say that college is the female charm training ground for a lot of women. Five semesters, 33 credit hours as a Political Science major, and I only had a single female professor in my major courses. All of my professors were generally nice, relatable, and easy to communicate with, but when I thought back and realized that almost all of my major’s professors were men, I was shocked that I hadn’t noticed sooner. I decided to study Political Science mainly because I’m a talker, and my major was full of discussion courses. In these courses, professors really get to know students through conversation; as a female, you quickly learn that even if you’ve made the most meaningful statement in your 50-minute discussion, the professor and your peers will deem you charismatic, and of course charming-- at least that was the case for me. One course was different, so I thought. This professor seemed particularly enamored with my ability to adequately express my typically unpopular opinions, and even though he used me daily to stir up conversation, when given the opportunity to speak about me, he only mentioned that I was attractive and charismatic and that it could take me far. I didn’t give it much thought at all at first because his statement wasn’t completely unique, but later on when giving it deeper thought, I couldn’t help but 4 November 15 - 21, 2017

think that this was someone I thought admired my critical thinking, conversational and argumentative skills, but was I wrong? Was he just charmed? When I think about my female peers on campus and how frequently we’d have conversations about creepy professors-- a lot of whom we still use for references on our resumes--it makes me realize that we as women have learned to play our roles. How could we have such relaxed conversations about things that clearly made us uncomfortable? More importantly, why did we continue to have relationships with men who made us feel so uncomfortable? The answer is simple: society has normalized the idea that a woman is only as valuable as she is attractive and men decide who is attractive thus deciding who is valuable. Men have been abusing their positions of power for centuries, but women have also become complacent in their efforts by giving them more power than they should ever be granted. The #MeToo campaign has shined a light on those who have abused their powers in the worst ways, and with the amount of stories being shared, it is very clear that sexual harassment and abuse are a huge part of our society, and one of the most prevalent issues we’ve been choosing to ignore on a major scale for centuries. My hope is that #MeToo gives everyone the motivation to take their power back from these predators so that they have no prey. We have to be the enforcers, reminding others that our talent is enough to carry us and that we are willing to do the work, and the work only.

Omar-Karim Strong Survivors of sexual violence may suffer a variety of traumas stemming from the event. Strong says rape not only caused him to have anxiety during sexual intercourse for years, but it also pushed him to seek solitude in isolation. “I stayed to myself and was very distrusting of those around me. For years, I had trouble taking down the wall I built around myself.” #MeToo has stretched beyond a social media trend. For people like Strong, it is a cathartic symbol that enables impacted voices to be heard loudly. With media empowering new stories everyday, Strong hopes men do more work to decrease sexual violence. “There needs to be more dialogue. Everyone talks about gun violence but not this. Men need to listen and know that there are resources out there. I think it’s a process. Society is a work in progress. People still have these stigmas

What Is Consent and What Is Not! By Kerris Guinn Defender Contributing Writer If there’s any good news around the #metoo revelations, it’s that people are now openly sharing their stories about dealing with sexual assault and misconduct—as well as the physical and mental scars that they have had to carry with them because of those incidents. Now, it’s more important than ever to go over what is consent, what it looks like and what it sounds like. No more gray areas. It’s time to be cognizant and attentive. No excuses. Talk to your partner; if your partner is too immature to talk about sex-- then your partner is probably too immature to actually be having it. In the illustrious words of Beyonce, “I’m sorry, I ain’t sorry.” According to the University of Chicago, some endorsed conversational ways to make sure that your partner wants to have intercourse includes: “Can I take your shirt off?” “How do you want me to touch you?” “Do you want to try something new?” “What do you like?” “What would you like to do?” Consenting responses “Yes!” “Like this…” *Nodding* “I want you to…” Check in with your partner during intimacy, make sure they’re into it. Foreplay and talking dirty is half the fun anyway. Some conversational pieces include: “Does this feel good?” “Do you like that?” “What do you want next?” Consenting Responses “Yes.” “Keep going.” “ I would like…” What Consent Doesn’t Look Like How a person chooses to dress does not signify whether or not the person wants to have sex. Someone flirting with you doesn’t mean that person wants to have sex with you. Silence is not an indication to keep go-

ing, so don’t. Furthermore, it doesn’t matter if you had sex with the person before, it doesn’t matter if that person is considered to be your girlfriend/boyfriend. It doesn’t even matter if the person said yes before engaging in intercourse--if your partner says “No,” “Stop,” “This hurts” *Shakes head* *Physically pulls away,* you no longer have consent. Respect that. Do not try to physically force or intimidate someone into complying to your wishes. Don’t ignore the statements or nods and just keep going. Don’t abuse the power that someone grants you when being emotionally and physically vulnerable to you. Moreover, being under the influence while being intimate with someone is not an excuse to not respect someone’s wishes. If you or your partner are too drunk to drive, then one, if not both, are too drunk to consent to having sex. Sex Etiquette Don’t send nudes unless requested or agreed upon. Disclose your status. When’s the last time you’ve been tested for sexually transmitted infections including HIV? How many partners have you had since you’ve been tested. Do you practice safe sex… Practice safe sex, unless otherwise agreed upon. Don’t say you’re wearing a condom, when you’re not. In general, be clean. Trying to be sexy while ignoring armpit sweat could be a struggle. Don’t just whip it out and hope someone likes it. Cook County Board 3rd District Candidate: Charise Williams By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer There hasn’t been an official statement from long-time Cook County Board Commissioner Jerry “Iceman” Butler on whether he would run for another term in the 3rd district. But, at 77, the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Famer and seven-term board commissioner’s silence has become an open indicator for prospects to throw their hat into the ring for his seat. One candidate has taken the bull by the horns, announcing her bid for the 3rd district office over the summer. Charise Williams’ interest in public service was first triggered by an incident that involved her then 12-yearold son falling ill and being hospitalized while she was in grad school. Not having health insurance at the time, she sought out medical care through Cook County’s health system. With the support and guidance by the doctors THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

and faculty, she realized how they had saved her son’s life. A single mother and finishing up her MBA program at the University of Chicago, she chose the path of seeking a career in public service. She says, “I interned for Toni Preckwinkle in 2012 right after she was elected. I worked on the bond court study, I worked in the juvenile department and I saw a lot of really good people doing good things in the county. You hear these stories about politicians not working hard and I saw people working hard. I was able to be a part of real policy,” Williams said. Currently, Williams works as Deputy Chief of Staff or Civic Engagement for Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs where she has worked for 2 years. A conversation with then Commissioner Robert Steele a few months before his passing in June of this year also motivated her to consider running for public office. “He asked me if I considered going into politics. being in the background and making things happen. But I wanted to actually be able to do things. He said there are actual politicians that do things. Robert Steele, for those who knew him, was all about the community and he was the first one to bring the idea to me,” she remembers. “After evaluating everything, I [realized] I could actually make real change within things I generally care about-public health and public safety.” Growing up on the South Side of Chicago, Williams and her brother were raised by her mother—a CPS teacher at the time. Still very close to their father, they were between both households receiving valuable lessons. Her father, a Marines veteran, and mother, who retired this year after 25 years of service for CPS, instilled in her the importance of giving back. “Everything she [mother] did was about service to others. I remember her buying granola bars at the store for us and also buying for others because her students would come to school and hadn’t eaten. My father is very disciplined—he’s sweet and cool, but he’s disciplined. He taught us ‘Your word is your word and you do what you say you’re going to do’. Having the best of both worlds but also seeing my mother struggle at the same time,” she said. “She always gave us what we needed even though we may have not gotten what we wanted. My story is not unique to most people.” Since early October, Williams has traveled around the district on a “listening tour,” talking directly with constituents about the issues that plague them as County residents. The third district stretches from parts of the Gold Coast to Bronzeville and as far west as Pulaski Rd. Two main concerns have been the additional taxes, which include the sweetened beverage tax, and the threats to healthcare provisions. “I feel you can still have access to public health and public safety without pulling back services. I don’t feel they go together—they can be exclusive. You shouldn’t have to sacrifice quality healthcare and good service because of bad spending,” Williams adds in her dismay. “It’s on our elected officials to be responsible and be fiscal. I can’t come to somebody’s house and demand they give me something if I haven’t done anything on my own to work to get it. First, we need to figure out what we can do right as an elected official without sacrificing any of the services we’ve been paying our taxes to receive. All of a sudden, we shouldn’t have to lose good doctors or good prosecutors because we mismanaged monies previously. Yes, we’re going to have a budget deficit but what have the elected officials done first to make sure the budget is met without cutting jobs?” In the primary race ahead, petitions are being hustled as candidates sprint to file them by the Dec.1 deadline to the Board of Elections office. Williams knows it’s not going to be an easy path to victory with Cook County Board President Preckwinkle openly endorsing former Chicago Community Trust executive William Lowry for the seat. At 40, she believes in the same attributes that has carried Commissioner Butler over the finish line. “The one thing that leads to Commissioner Butler’s legacy is healthcare. He is a huge advocate of healthcare especially for single moms. I honestly believe if it wasn’t for people like him, me and my son would’ve been in a different situation. I don’t know if it was directly because of him but I know he’s been an advocate for single moms, children and seniors since he’s been in office.” If Williams wins the primary and ultimately the general election, she will be the first female Cook County Commissioner to represent the 3rd district and possibly the third woman to serve on the board overall in a heavily male-dominated club. “I’m excited about the next generation of leaders. Yes, the Cook County board has traditionally been considered a ‘boys club’ but I’m hopeful and excited to have people like me to change that,” she says. “I’m one of the first ones stepping out, but I’ll make sure I’m not the last one. Former Obama Health Sr. Advisor Lauren Underwood Runs for Congress

Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer When you venture out into the suburbs of Chicago, there are some townships that standout, serving over 100,000+ residents, standing solidly and cultivating a rich tradition of what Midwestern towns are known for. The city of Chicago is the largest and dominant city in the state of Illinois, but it’s the towns and counties throughout the state that resonate very different viewpoints on policies, religion, class and often race. Lauren Underwood has set out to bring out the best of these values and also discuss the hard issues that have become the elephant in the room. Her decision to run for the Congressional seat in the 14th District will make her the first African American woman to contend for this office, challenging Republican incumbent Randy Hultgren. A native of Naperville, IL, she grew up learning about civic engagement and policy while attending Neuqua Valley High School. “When I was in high school, they introduced a program to high school students to serve on local boards and commissions. When I was 16 I served on our Fair Housing Commission. That was a wonderful experience to get an appointment at that age to understand what service is and to go through the process to get appointed and reappointed for another term,” she said. “We were working on fair housing and discrimination issues in Naperville. Naperville is not known as a place that has this large rental community, but surprise, surprise, landlords were doing things that were not entirely legal or that shared the values of our exclusive community.” She said this experience in her youth allowed her to review statues and make recommendations to the city council about lead sources, section 8 vouchers and uncovering discrimination on the basis of race, sex and other cultures. “All of these proactive classes were something I was fascinated by. It made public service and government truly local and I understood my power as an informed citizen to make a difference. I was moved by that experience, but at the same time, I wanted to be in healthcare,” said Williams. While in third grade, she was diagnosed with a heart condition known as supraventricular Tachycardia, which rapidly speeds up the heart rate abnormally. 6 November 15 - 21, 2017

This led to her fascination and interest in pursuing a career in the health field. She recalls, “So, I had these two experiences—healthcare and understanding the need to have strong excellent providers to help young women like me at that time. Also, local politics. I hadn’t reconciled it but I knew I had these two interests so I picked medicine and went to college. After acquiring her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from the University of Michigan in 2008, she went on to earn her graduate degree in nursing and public health at John Hopkins University. “Now I can bridge my two interests and have a whole career in policy. I knew I could take this experience I had in local government and my interest in nursing and make a difference for our population in our healthcare system.” As part of President Barack Obama’s administration, Underwood was appointed to serve as the Senior Advisor at HHS, helping communities prepare for domestic and public health threats. This also included the U.S. response to the Ebola outbreak and the recent Flint, Mich., water crisis. Her experience to combat the real issues around the country on a federal level has prepared her for pursuing the congressional seat in a district that covers a diverse spectrum of communities that range from low-income to working and middle class to wealthy and affluent areas. No matter where the class divide begins, her grassroot efforts on the campaign trails has brought together similar concerns from constituents. “Jobs and economic development are major concerns across the board. When I look at Northern Illinois, if we were to isolate and take out the city of Chicago from the equation—there would be no Illinois. Where I live, we use to have our own economic engine. In Naperville, everyone wasn’t going to the city to work. We had industry, we had companies that were excited to move their headquarters to our suburban environment because we had this pool of educated and skilled workers. It wasn’t all agricultural business—it was across the board. That growth isn’t happening anymore. Now, every month in my community we have plants closing and massive lay-offs.” At 31, Underwood says she was worried about how people in her district would react to an African American woman running in a district that has swung Republican in the past. But, surprisingly, her race was not the issue. “I was prepared for the ugliest, in your face version of www.chicagodefender.com

racism when I launched this campaign. I was ready for it. What I’ve been surprised by is not racism—it’s sexism and my age. It was ‘sit over here little girl and let the big boys sit at the table and make the decisions’. I’m running in a Democratic primary against four middle-aged White men. It’s not about race, it’s about the age and the gender,” Underwood said. “It’s the gatekeeper’s comfort levels— by that I mean local party structures, traditional funders, their comfort levels with that kind of representation. Even in the Democratic party—that’s where I start to get angry. When you look traditionally at Democratic voters, at the core constituency of the party, what do you see? People of color, so why is there this active movement to keep our voices off the table?” Aside from her advocacy for quality healthcare and keeping in place the Affordable Healthcare Act—she is a staunch supporter of public education. She and incumbent U.S. Rep. Hultgren differ on this platform. “He has been the lead sponsor in the House of Representatives for several cycles for the Healthy Relationships Act. What that bill seeks to do is to limit funding for public schools unless they teach abstinence only in sex education. Limit significant funding for public schools because according to this bill, ‘abstinence only’ is the only way to have a healthy relationship. You can’t be a supporter of public education and put a limit on ‘fact base’ teachings.” On the national front, the Democratic party is aggressively seeking to flip the House of Representatives in 2018, which takes 24 Congressional seats to turn back blue. Underwood is knocking on doors and canvasing the communities while maintaining her daytime job working as a registered nurse for a Medicaid-managed care plan agency. With the support of her family—her father, a retired corporate comptroller, and mom, who currently works in the corporate arena, and her sister—she is determined to grind to the end. Underwood contributes this to the tenacity and spirit of her grandmothers who marched during the Civil Rights era. “By way of Alabama on my father’s side and Pittsbugh on my mother’s side, I come from a real industrial, working class family. For my parents to relocate from Cleveland and come to Illinois is significant.” Underwood reflects on her last grandmother’s recent passing in June. “I wish she could’ve seen this—they both would’ve been out here knocking on doors with me.” THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

The historic South Side Community Art Center, 3831 S. Michigan Ave., has been recognized as a national treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The South Side Community Arts Center Recognized As National Treasure By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer At a recent press conference held within the historic confines of the South Side Community Art Center (SSCAC), 3831 S. Michigan Ave., the National Trust for Historic Preservation recognized the Bronzeville landmark for what it truly is -- a national treasure. Since its dedication in 1941 by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, the SSCAC has served as a beacon of African-American art, culture, poetry in Chicago for more than 75 years. The SSCAC is the sole art center to consistently remain open out of 100 from President Franklin Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration Arts Project Initiative. Legendary artists such as Dr. Margaret Burroughs, Gwendolyn Brooks—the first African American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize—and Life magazine photographer and filmmaker Gordon Parks have all walked the halls of the SSCAC throughout its existence. The National Trust for Historic Preservation, a privately funded non-profit that works to preserve historic sites, is no stranger to Chicagoland. In years past the NTHP recognized the Pullman National Monument, the Frank Lloyd Wright’s Unity Temple, and the Prentice Women’s Hospi8 November 15 - 21, 2017

tal as national treasures. Barb Pahl, senior vice president of NTHP, said the national treasure designation is the NTHP’s highest honor of which there are less than 100 current sites. She said NTHP’s goal is to work alongside the SSCAC to ensure the building and its works are preserved and restored in addition to work to promote the SSCAC to a broader audience. She said NTHP will now move forward to ensure the SSCAC is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. “The Center’s distinguished role in Chicago and across the country is why I am proud to say today that the South Side Community Arts Center is our newest national treasure,” said Pahl. “This designation means that we believe that the South Side Community Art Center is a part of our nation’s history book and must be saved and live on to be a source of inspiration for this generation and the next. The South Side Community Arts Center stands at the center of our work to identify and preserve the places that tell the often overlooked stories of African Americans and their many cultural contributions to our nation’s fabric.” Twyler Jenkins, co-president of the board of directors at the SSCAC, a board member for five years, said the NTHP’s national treasure designation has been two years in the making. future of the SSAC will look like moving forward, including thoughts of expansion, development of a capital campaign, and strategic planning for the foreseeable future. She said the designation brings greater interest and exposure not only locally but internationally. “We certainly want to become a jewel that is on the South Side of Chicago and throughout the World,” said Jenkins. “What Margaret Burroughs and the other founders did when they founded this organization 76 years ago was unprecedented, and for us to still be here is still unprecedented so I think what this day does is allow us to continue that legacy.” Jenkins stated firmly that there’s value in preserving Chicago’s African-American art and culture. She noted while a good deal of work may be ahead, the board is ready to take on the challenge. “We can’t allow this to be taken away from us, we can’t allow this story to not be around to tell our future generation, we can’t allow this to be lost in any shape, form, or fashion and not only the building but the archives,” said Jenkins. The impact of the SSCAC goes beyond its history and now to the next generation of artists. Masequa Myers, executive director of SSCAC, said because of art’s ability to impact the lives of young people, the SSCAC is relevant and will continue to be relevant now and in the years ahead. “Art speaks from the heart, art opens up the lines of communication, and we know that art can heal,” said Myers. Alreona Phillips, a student at Chicago Military Academy at Bronzeville, now in her second year in the Teen Talk Theater program facilitated by After School Matters held at the SSCAC, demonstrates the landmark’s future on the next generation of artists. Initially, Phillips said she wasn’t aware of the historical relevance the SSCAC, but she has recently become more familiar. The Chatham native said she likes to act and was the assistant director of a play, “Faith,” last year. Phillips said the SSAC provides a space where she and the youth in attendance can be themselves. She acknowledged the encouragement she’s received from the SSAC to push herself to be the best she can be. “Yes, we have ourselves but you need people to come along and people of our color to show you that your color doesn’t mean anything... your race, sexual orientation, gender, or your age don’t mean anything; if you want something, you can do it,” said Phillips. “You actually want to go out and create things, and being here I’ve wanted to create my own foundations and my own clubs and groups to help other people.” Phillips said she has recruited multiple friends from her high school who frequently visit the SSCAC for a variety of events. This major crosstown street in the New York City borough of Manhattan is known for its theaters, specifically near the intersection of Broadway at Times Square in Midtown. The Theater District of Manhattan New York is notably one of the busiest and brightest intersections where numerous people thrive off of one another to survive, especially during the “Great Depression” of 1933. In tribute to the street, the musiBrenda and Rick cal “42nd Street” is an American faMcCain vorite written by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, with lyrics by Al Dubin and Johnny Mercer, and music by Harry Warren. This musical takes you on a journey of bright lights, big dreams, and even bigger egos. We follow Peggy Sawyer (Kimberly Immanuel), fresh off the bus from Allentown, Pa., as she arrives in New York City with her suitcase in hand to audition for the next big musical. Auditions for 1933’s newest show “Pretty Lady” are nearly over when aspiring chorus girl Peggy gets up enough nerve to try out. Her luck would change when Billy Lawlor (Phillip Attmore), one of the teen leads in the play, has his eyes set on her from the moment she walks in the room. He asks her out and tells her he can help her bypass the auditions. Unfortunately, choreographer Andy Lee (Erica Evans) has no time for Billy’s latest conquest and tells her, “Amscray, toots.” You have to love the dialogue back in the 30’s to appreciate that statement. Peggy, still without a job or a role in the play, gets another break when Marsh tells Andy the dance choreographer that he still needs one more dancer as a replacement and Peggy is right on the spot, dancing her soul away. She lands the final role but misfortune comes when Dorothy accuses Peggy of bumping her during rehearsal, causing her to fall and break her ankle. Dorothy demands that Julian fires her and he angrily concedes, but the play that hasn’t even had a chance to start is already over. Julian has to tell the group that the play may have to close because they don’t have a lead actress. However, someone from the group suggests that Peggy could fill the lead role easily because she’s a fresh young face who can sing and dance circles around Dorothy. Julian is hesitant at first but agrees it is worth a shot and rushes off to the Philadelphia’s Broad Street Train Station to catch her before she departs. Julian apologizes and asks Peggy to return, but Peggy is done with show business and is ready to return back home to Allentown. Desperately, Julian tries to persuade her with the words, “Come on along and listen to the lullaby of Broadway...” and after the cast joins him in the serenade, Peggy finally accepts his offer. Peggy is now thrust into the lead role, however she has never had any role and is traumatized when she realizes to make her dream come true, she has to learn all of the songs and dances in two days. She’s trying not to have a nervous breakdown while rehearsing but she gets a surprising vote of encouragement from Dorothy, who has been watching her and comes to the conclusion that she www.chicagodefender.com

is pretty good. Dorothy decides to bury the hatchet and gives her some friendly advice on how to perform the last song, “About a Quarter to Nine.” Julian stops by to see Peggy before the opening night curtain rise, he kisses her and gives her a pep talk to get her into character and utters the iconic line, “You’re going out there a youngster, but you’ve got to come back a star!” The show turns out to be a huge success that catapults Peggy into stardom. Peggy is invited to the opening night party; however, she decides to attend the chorus one instead. Julian is standing alone onstage and quietly begins singing “Come and meet those dancing feet on the avenue I’m taking you to...42nd Street.” “42nd Street” is a new age melting pot with a diverse cast of good singers, fabulous dancers and talented actors, and the musical stays true to the origin of the story. The musical has a nostalgic aura, with a contemporary feel that the young and old can relate to. It is the story where one lucky break (no pun intended) can change a person’s dreams. The energy displayed in this musical that honored the roots of tap dancing was simply remarkable, which includes the singing of the classic song of “We’re In The Money” and the awesome chorus tap dancing on a drumshaped platform sprinkled with nickels and dimes. This was a phenomenal piece of artistry at its finest along with many others such as “Shuffle Off To Buffalo,” which was delivered with a fresh new age sound that was well appreciated. We highly recommend that you see “42nd Street.” It surely will put you in the holiday mood of believing dreams do come true. As previously announced, the twohour special will air live on TV One Monday, January 15, 2018, the federal holiday honoring the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The telecast will also include a live pre-show from the star-studded red carpet. Driver Attention System Enables Safe Operation “When we were developing Super Cruise™ we knew it was important to keep the driver engaged during operation. That’s why we’ve added a driver attention function, to insist on driver supervision,” said Barry Walkup, chief engineer of Cadillac Super Cruise™. The driver attention system uses a small camera located on the top of the steering column that focuses exclusively on the driver and works with infrared lights to track head position to determine where the driver is looking whenever Super Cruise™ is in operation. Existing driver assist systems only rely upon steering wheel input and warning messages to request driver attention and control. Cadillac is the only manufacturer to monitor driver attention to the road ahead when Super Cruise™ is engaged. If the system detects the driver has turned attention away from the road ahead for too long, it will prompt the driver to return his/her attention to the road ahead. If the driver does not immediately refocus on the road, Super Cruise™ will continue to safely steer until a further escalation of alerts prompts the driver to resume supervision. If the system determines continued inattentiveness, a steering wheel light bar guides the driver to look at the road or take back control of the wheel. Additional alerts can include visual indicators in the instrument cluster, tactile alerts in Cadillac’s Safety Alert Seat and audible alerts, if necessary. In the limited event of an unresponsive driver, the Cadillac CT6 utilizes the full capability of onboard driver assistance technologies to bring the car to a controlled stop and contact OnStar to alert first responders, if necessary. Super Cruise™ will be offered as an option on the 2018 Cadillac CT6 prestige sedan, starting this fall in the U.S. and Canadian markets.

David and Tamela Mann: It’s All About Family By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer David and Tamela Mann have become a household name across television screens with two current series on different networks. The Manns on TV One and Mann & Wife on Bounce TV—both bringing good ole fashion family values with a comedic twist. The husband and wife team have brought the comedic relief of David’s pure sensibility and laughter along with his partner in life, Tamela, whose beautiful voice has garnered several Stellar awards as well as a Grammy and NAACP Image awards. This week, The Manns will be in Chicago on Friday, November 17 with their show, The Mann’s World Family Tour, at the Arie Crown. The show features the musical stylings of daughter, Tia Mann, performing new music, and music from son, DJ David Mann, Jr., a comedy set by David Mann, and a full concert by Tamela Mann. The Chicago Defender talked with the award-winning couple about their endeavors to bring their family on the road with a new tour as well as discussing their formula for a solid marriage and career in entertainment. What was the concept behind The Mann’s World Family Tour? David: We wanted to do something where people can see our whole family together because they see us together all the time with television shows and the plays. So, we wanted to do something to show our kids’ talents. Although they aren’t kids anymore, they are full grown

Tamala and David Mann adults. It can show people that you can work together. Not only work together but you can thrive together. With the holidays, right here around the corner, people are in the giving mode. What are some of the things that you want people to take away from this particular show? Tamela: To expect the unexpected and to have the inspiration with the holidays coming up. A lot of us need to get back to the basics. Even though sometimes we only get together around the holidays. We want people to concentrate on how important family is as a unit. To take some hope and inspiration from this tour. To inspire and keep loving each other. David: She takes us home—all the gospel—all the fa-

vorites. “Take Me to the King”, “Only Imagine” “This Place”, “God Provides”, “Change Me”—I mean all the favorites you’ve heard her over the years. She just comes and takes us to a whole new level. If you’ve seen us in Chicago before, erase that. It’s totally different. It’s another level higher. Tamela: We wanted to give extra to the people of God and the people who follow us. To bring some hope because it’s a lot of things happening in the world. Whatever problems you’re dealing with, just leave it at the door. What would you want people to be left with regarding your legacy? David: The first thing is a solid foundation. Without a foundation, the building will crumble. It can look great but it has to have a foundation. That’s what we have to get back to our kids and even our adults. Tamela: Our faith in God. That’s how a lot of us made it. When you think back, the majority of us have a Christian base. Our grandmothers made sure we went to church and give some time to God. We still have to give that time back to God. For Him to watch over us and there is so much going on and we need a covering. It starts with God and then our family. David: We have to give back to the village mentality. Remember when we all looked out for each other. We all took care of each other. You knew your child was safe at the next house or you knew the lady of the house got sick, the other women would rally around and bring food. The men as well. We have to get back to the village mentality and we’ll start to see this thing change.

City.Life.Style In the Mix: Chicago Carjackings Have People On Guard, Showcasing South Shore’s Finest By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer We are literally six weeks away from celebrating Christmas and seven weeks from the New Year. Can you believe 2018 is right around the corner, less than two months away? Yet, Chicago is under siege. Yep. There is a heightened rate of car jacked thefts occurring throughout the city and flowing into the suburbs. People are literally being held at gunpoint while standing near their vehicles, pumping gas or unpacking groceries from their trunk. No second thought, the thieves jump in the ride, not realizing there may be chilMary L. Datcher dren strapped in the backseat. It is not only troubling, it is utterly frightening because it is a feeling that doesn’t allow you to let down your guard. For residents that live in rough neighborhoods or for those who grew up in one—your defense mode is always “on,” but for those who can’t imagine the cold steel of a .45 caliber touching your temple— it’s unreal. Just when you thought Halloween was over, another level of terror descends on Chicago residents. While the City of Chicago reports a record number of building cranes in the sky to reflect how many luxury buildings being built (still can’t find any Black on-site construction workers), parking lots are disappearing and ride share prices are surging. It’s wonderful that we’ve had the highest tourism revenue ever and buildings are taking up every corner of free space, but meanwhile, low income families and seniors cringe because they know what this means for them. Rising property taxes and every other tax that both the city council or Cook County Board can create affects every solid penny from residents who can barely muster up enough to cover utilities. In 2015, we witnessed groups of teens descending on Gold Coast shops, crashing and grabbing high-end items. “Oh no,” wealthy residents said it could “never happen in their neighborhood.” But it did and now those that “have not” are targeting those that “have plenty.” Buckle up, lock your doors and stay woke. Times are hard and it’s real out here in these streets. Political Endorsements and Announcements Democratic gubernatorial candidate Chris Kennedy and running mate Ra Joy picked up a solid endorsement from chair of the Police Accountability Task Force, Lori E. Lightford, on Tuesday. Not one to hold her tongue against police misconduct in law enforcement, Lightford released a statement outlining her choice for Illinois governor. “I’m proud to support Chris Kennedy and Ra Joy. They have the right vision, the right voice, and I’m an enthusiastic supporter.” Last week, 100 Women With A Purpose for Toni Preckwinkle held a fundraiser for the Cook County Board President at the Parkway Ballroom. There were an estimated 150 guests in attendance at $100 per ticket and they gathered to support her through a third term. The “Benji:” Top 10 Chicago High School Hoopers of All-Time By Terrence Tomlin & Eugene McIntosh Sports By #TheBIGS “Benji” If you’ve ever as much as picked up a basketball in the city of Chicago, there is one name that you should know. No, not Michael Jordan, Ben Wilson. “Benji,” as he was affectionately known, helped Simeon Academy win their first ever State Title in 1984 and was named the best junior in the country after the season. However, we remember “Benji” most for what he might have been. Taken from us far too soon due to a senseless act of violence, we never got to see this rose that grew from concrete in full bloom. Instead, his legacy is carried on by every hooper in the city. Every basket, rebound, win is dedicated to “Benji” because he was the best of us and his story will be told for generations to come. So in honor of the legendary #25, who remains in a class by himself, we put our top ten Chicago High School hoopers on wax. Enjoy. 10. Jabari Parker Simeon Career Academy Class of 2013 He was already a living legend before he ever played for the legendary Coach Krzyzewski at Duke in 2013. Jabari was the first freshman to ever start for Simeon, and considering the long list of Wolverine greats, that is one hell of an accomplishment. He racked up 4 State Championships from ‘09-‘12, was named the Gatorade High School Player of the Year in 2011, and was the #2 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, but what he’ll be remembered for most by folks back at the crib is being a smooth operator on the Simeon hardwood and carrying the torch of Simeon greats. 9. Juwan Howard Chicago Vocational Academy Class of 1991 Very few big men coming out of Chicago have the resume that “Nuke” has. Member of the legendary “Fab Five” at Michigan, #5 pick in 1994 NBA Draft, All Star in 1996, NBA Champ in 2012. But before all that, “Nuke” was a legend in our hood by his senior year at “The V!” We remember him for his legendary battles with Deon Thomas and others. Inventor of the “HESO,” he has put in big work on all levels not to mention his legendary IIT moments (good and terrible). Ronnie Fields Farragut Career Academy Class of 1996 High School teammate of Kevin Garnett, Ronnie is a 3-time Parade All American ’94-’96, simply AMAZING. He was the high school version of Big Mike and had an alleged 50 inch vert (remember the time he jumped OVER Sergio Mcclain?). He signed to DePaul but was denied admission due to a run-in with the law. Ronnie simply birthed a nation of hoopers without playing a single college game...I always wonder what he could’ve been! 6. Tim Hardaway Carver Military Academy Class of 1985 Originator of the “KILLER CROSSOVER,” Tim Hardaway is one of the best point guards to ever pick up a basketball. Bears Pack No Punch In 23-16 L To Packers By Terrence Tomlin Sports By #TheBIGS SOLDIER FIELD — The Bears entered Week 9 favored to win a regular season game for the first time in 9 years. Coming off a bye, the Bears were primed to be in position to make the Vegas odds makers look good. The defense had seemingly turned a corner and “Truuu” looked solid enough in the first 4 games of his NFL career to convince fans that his progression arrow would stay trending up. But any betting man knew that the Bears being favored was more of a death sentence than a vote of confidence. It was supposed to be a week where the Bears reestablished a grip on their season… instead they found themselves in

an old fashioned trap game that knocked them back down to size. “Obviously, this was a very disappointing loss here at home. Like a lot of games this season, we’ve been in the thick of things until the end and just came up a little short,” said head coach John Fox. But anyone who suffered through watching this game knows that the Bears came up more than “a little” short. 1. The nominee must be a man (at least 21 years of age) who resides in Chicago metropolitan area (the city of Chicago and contiguous communities within fifty (50) miles radius of the city center).

Nominees must agree to have their photograph and biographical information published in The Chicago Defender. All nominees selected as a Chicago Defender Man of Excellence will be featured in a 2018 edition of the Chicago Defender.
