CITY NEWS Englewood Grandmother and Granddaughter Graduate Together from CSU Amid the pomp and circumstance of the fall commencement on Thursday, December 14, at Chicago State University, a grandmother and granddaughter from Englewood will receive their bachelor’s degrees —together. Belinda Berry, a 62-yearold grandmother, will walk just a few steps ahead of her granddaughter, 25-year-old Karea Berry, as each is handed a diploma.

Belinda will receive a degree in Business Administration and her granddaughter Karea will receive her degree in Criminal Justice.

We didn’t plan it this way, but often in Black families, as a result of the economy and low-income, we have to prioritize and make decisions that work best for our families at the time,” said grandmother Belinda acknowledging that sometimes achieving goals not only require money, but also patience and persistence.

According to Census reports and population and poverty data provided by Illinois Action for Children, the vast majority of the approximately 26,121 mostly African American residents who live in Englewood, have only some high school and some college. Of those who graduated from college, most earned two-year associate degrees. In fact, there are more residents in the South Side community who never graduated from high school than there are residents who earned a bachelor’s degree.

“I just feel so thankful to the Lord,” says Belinda. “I’ve been sick over the last two years. Still I managed to take care of my 86-year-old uncle and, I also still managed to study and finish

Karea Berry and grandmother Belinda Berry college. It’s just a blessing.”

Belinda not only made it to college; she also made it to the top of her class. Come Thursday, after earning a 3.8 grade point average (GPA), the anxious grandmother will graduate Magna Cum Laude. Beside her, granddaughter Karea will be on her heels in more ways than one. Also a high-achiever, Karea’s GPA is 3.4.

Both Belinda and Karea plan to enroll immediately in a graduate program. Belinda’s goal is to continue in Business Administration, and Karea will look toward CSU’s Clinical and Mental Health Counseling program.

Author of The STOP, Dwayne Bryant, to Host a Two-Part Inspiration Workshop for Chicago Youth In an effort to improve police-community relations, and empower young Black males to find their inner-strength and focus, Dwayne Bryant has announced a two-part workshop titled “Journey to Success.” The workshop will take place at Trinity United Church of Christ, 400 East 95th Street on December 13 from 9:30am to 3:30pm.

Since his own unique encounter with an Indiana state police officer, and over a dozen other encounters, Dwayne Bryant, motivational speaker, television personality, and founder of Inner Vision International, documented his experiences in his book titled “The STOP - Improving Police and Community Relations.” Bryant Dwayne Bryant would go on to educate both youth and officers about Improving police and community relations in the current climate of distrust for law enforcement.

Now, Bryant is taking his two-part, “Journey to Success” workshop to Black youth on Chicago’s south side. In part one of the workshop, students will see firsthand the importance of making sound decisions, choosing the right friends, respecting their teachers, gaining a knowledge of self, and being serious about their education and their future. Bryant says he primarily focused this workshop for young Black males because they are one of the most marginalized members of our society. “Aca-

demics are the lowest for Black males yet their incarceration rates are the highest,” he said. “In any emergency triage situation, you treat the ones that need it the most first so they can still survive. This is why we empower, educate, and enlighten these young men.”

By teaching the historical significance of the contribution of Black males, and touching on the relationship of police and community, Bryant believes his program will directly decrease the incarceration rate -- and directly increase the graduation rate. “We are creating proactive contributors to this society,” said Bryant. “This is a social impact that will affect the entire nation.”

In addition to teaching better educational and behavioral habits, Bryant believes it’s important for young Black males to be educated about the realities of policing and understand they are human beings as well. “Our young men have the power to significantly help the outcome based on their words, their tone, and body language,” he said. “They will learn intelligent decision making tools. They will learn to respect authority regardless of the presence the authority gives off. They will learn today is the future, and we will connect their present to their future so they can learn who they are.”

At the end of the workshop, students will receive their personal copy of “The STOP” and The STOP Challenge Poster. Students will also have the opportunity to network with attorneys, law enforcement, judges, and engage with Bryant

By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer Let me call you a cab. An expression that at one time was commonplace may become a relic of the past if current trends continue-- thanks to the presence of rideshare companies that may have changed the way Chicagoans get around the Windy City forever.

The rise of rideshare companies in Chicago may have begun in earnest on Sept. 22, 2011, when Uber, one of the largest and most commonly known rideshare companies, first launched in the Windy City, according to a blogpost on its website. Since Uber’s arrival, similar companies like Lyft have all joined the marketplace.

Behind The Wheel The estimated number of rideshare drivers on the road in Chicago appears to be staggering. According to a Nov. 2015 report from DNAinfo Chicago, more than 156,000 tax emblems, which represent a driver and car for companies that pick up passengers via smartphone apps, have been recorded by the City of Chicago.

The Defender spoke with a local rideshare driver to gain a better perspective as to what it’s like to be a part of the rideshare workforce.

Crystal Jones, a Chicago native, was originally drawn to drive for Uber after seeing one of their commercials emphasizing the extra money drivers could make. She said the THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Where Is The Rideshare Industry Taking Us? allure of being her own boss was a part of what drew her to driving, too. She said she drove for the company for two years, typically working 35 hours on average a week. She said initially she was making a solid income but over time the returns began to steadily decrease, which prompted her switch to Lyft.

“Uber, to me, decided to get greedy; they started taking the choice of pools and they started taking our money, the bonuses started to [decrease],” said Jones.

Ald. Anthony Beale (9th Ward), chairman of the City Council’s Committee on Transportation and Public Way, said he’s been a staunch critic of rideshare companies since they burst on the scene in Chicago. He called the idea to pair a driving service with an app a “great concept” but disliked the future implications the service would have on the city calling it “bad for business.”

“They have found a loophole and have been able to operate in that loophole for millions of dollars and escape www.chicagodefender.com

regulations from the City of Chicago and any other municipalities,” said Beale. “They take advantage of their riders and their drivers to make money because when you sign up for Uber and Lyft, you use your car, your gas, your wear and tear on your car and you have to have a million dollars of insurance.”

Uber has yet to respond to an interview request with the Defender. A Lyft spokesman has yet to respond to an interview request with the Defender.

The Taxi Industry Speaks Out One of the industries suffering from the emergence of rideshare companies in Chicago is the taxi industry. In the last three years taxi revenue has decreased by 40 percent, according to a report by Business Insider.

Chicagoans like South Side native Rick Calloway rely on the taxicab industry to provide for their family; yet, with continued on page 4

Month of Code Challenge Launches Chicago may produce the next great programmer, app creator, digital engineer or website designer. Why? Because this month, children (and families) all over Chicago will develop and enhance their computer skills by engaging in fun, exciting and free coding activities! A wide-reaching partnership that includes Chicago Public Schools (CPS), Chicago Public Library, Chicago Housing Authority (CHA), Chicago City Colleges, Code 60+ and Chicago City of Learning (CCOL) is launching Mayor Emanuel’s Month of Code Challenge – with the expectation that youth and their families will engage in over 25,000 hours of code.

Building on the global Hour of Code campaign, where millions of youth from more than 180 countries practice coding, Month of Code is unique to Chicago, providing the city’s youth (and their families) a special opportunity to practice computer science skills for five additional weeks.

Whether youth want to learn how to design an animation, create a video game, or explore something entirely new, Month of Code has exciting activities for everyone.

recent developments he admitted he’s unsure of what’s going to happen next.

“What is happening is you’re taking a way of living to take care of your family and you’ve turned it into a fly by night job,” said Calloway. “We have rules and regulations that made us ambassadors to the city, and now one by one basically we are lowering our standards to what Uber and Lyft want as opposed to them coming up to par with the cab standards.”

Calloway, a taxi driver for five years, argues rideshare companies “over saturate the market.”

He said with the influx of rideshare vehicles, his days have become longer as a necessity to break even just with the cost of leasing his taxi Rick Calloway through a taxi company before factoring in his bills.

“Last year in January, I was paying $500 a week [for my lease] and for three straight weeks, I just broke even or was coming up short on my lease and I was working 12-13 hours a day and that’s when I realized I have to do more hours,” said Calloway.

A self-described entrepreneur, Calloway said he’s suffering from “anxiety” and “depression” because he’s now required to drive for 16-18 hours a day for a minimum of five days a week.

“I try to take a day off, but if it’s really, really slow, I work seven days,” said Calloway. “I’ve worked 21-28 days in a row a lot of times.”

CCOL is providing over 80 online coding challenges at www.chicagocityoflearning.org, making it easy and fun for youth, parents and teachers to practice coding throughout the month. Youth can participate in Month of Code at home and online, or they can code in different places throughout the city – CPS is organizing coding events, teachers are planning coding lessons and local organizations are hosting coding activities around the community.

“We know that educating Chicago students today means going beyond the basics, and we must give them the tools they need to compete in a global, 21st century

economy. Computer science education and coding skills are more valuable now than ever, as hundreds of tech-related jobs and internships open up each year in the Chicago area,” said Chief Education Officer Janice Jackson.

“Mayor Emanuel’s Month of Code provides Chicago students opportunities to develop these important skills in a creative way.” The CPS Computer Science for All and Family and Community Engagement 2 teams are organizing a school-based challenge and Winter Break events at Parent University sites (Clemente, Smyth and Michelle Clark schools). The Chicago Public Libraries are also hosting a variety of collaborative coding events for children.

spokesman from AFSCME Communications, Cab Drivers United/AFSCME was founded in 2014 after dozens of cab drivers approached AFSCME, a union, and expressed their concerns.

Jones echoed Calloway’s sentiment that with the high volume of rideshare vehicles on the road, making a significant amount of money is difficult.

“It’s almost like a hit or miss when you’re driving for Uber,” said Jones.

The Call for More Regulations Beale believes more regulations are necessary for the entire rideshare industry. The alderman said rideshare drivers should undergo the same background and verification processes cab drivers go through to provide an added degree of security for everyone involved. He said 33 aldermen have signed on to lend their support toward legislation for greater rideshare regulation including background checks and fingerprinting.

“You have seen it where people have been robbed, sexually molested, and all of misbehavior that goes on and there’s no checks and balances,” said Beale. “Once you start fingerprinting, you become an employee of a company and they don’t want you to fingerprint because they don’t want any liability; they want you taking all the risk while they make the money.”

In a highly publicized incident former Uber driver Adnan Nafasat, 46, was charged with criminal sexual assault, unlawful restraint and kidnapping of one of his passengers in Jan. 2015, according to multiple reports. Uber released a statement saying it removed Nafasat from the platform and they were working with authorities.

Jones suggested passengers should be subject to background checks too to ensure the safety of drivers given the reports she read.

“What’s been going on lately is that the riders are the ones that are more violent than the drivers,” said Jones.

“They’re saying they’re protecting the riders from the drivers, but who is protecting the drivers from the riders?”

Beale’s concerns go beyond just what happens within the cars but into the digital space, too. He stated Uber violated city, state and federal laws by failing to disclose information to the federal government and local municipalities about its data breach.

“People’s stuff is still at risk and they tried to conceal it,” said Beale. “Uber is a bad company and you can see it time and time again. It’s only a matter of time before more drastic things happen because they’re a bad company.”

In response to the data breach, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi released a statement on the company’s website apologizing for the breach and outlining changes for the future.

“None of this should have happened, and I will not make excuses for it,” wrote Khosrowshahi. “While I can’t erase the past, I can commit on behalf of every Uber employee that we will learn from our mistakes. We are changing the way we do business, putting integrity at the core of every decision we make and working hard to earn the trust of our customers.”

Business As Usual Yet, despite everything that surrounds the rideshare industry, there are customers like Chicago native Sarai Koonce who will continue to take advantage of the service. She said a part of the reason why she prefers ridershare companies to other options is because “they hire regular people.” She said she isn’t overly concerned about her safety because she shares where she is traveling and who the driver is using screenshots from her phone with friends.

“It’s much easier, it’s much cheaper, it’s easier to communicate with the person after you already order the ride,” said Koonce, who shared she preferred Lyft over Uber.

“It’s mostly about the convenience and my comfort.”

COMMUNITY Forrest Claypool: A Trainwreck Waiting To Happen?

Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer What started out as a formal press conference announcing CPS CEO Forrest Claypool’s resignation ended up as a “you know you wrong, but we got your back” farewell from Mayor Rahm Emanuel. The announcement of the long-time public official’s resignation was not a surprise due to the latest report from Inspector General Nicholas Schuler slamming Claypool for lying and violating CPS ethics policy; rumors of his removal circulated a few days before the announcement.

Mayor Emanuel vehemently backed his head of the third largest public-school system in the country in the same manner he supported former CPD Supt. Garry McCarthy. It just wasn’t a “good look” so he accepted his resignation, concluding his post the last day of December. But who really works on the last day of December at CPS headquarters—outside of assistant administrators and the maintenance staff?

How many CEOs does it take before CPS gets it right? Each position and role, Claypool has held—he had no prior history, rising up in the ranks within that department. So, the question remains— who really is at fault? Claypool is not an educator nor did he have any experience building an educational institution within the Chicagoland region.

Chicago taxpayers had to endure the catastrophic scandal of Barbara Byrd-Bennett and her business associates stealing money from a $30 million no-bid contract.

Although Bennett pleaded guilty and is currently serving her sentence—the mayor’s latest appointment bows out in disgrace. During the 2015 mayoral election, Chicago voters highly favored an elected school board during a nonbinding referendum—transparency and accountability is required.

Adding more salt to the mayor’s wound, the Illinois Senate voted 53-2 to approve an elected board—not appointed

by Emanuel in May. Not a fan of Claypool’s style of administration, Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) released an official statement on his departure.

“Our members are delighted to see Forrest Claypool go, but he’s got to take his policies with him. Ninety-nine percent of our members voted ‘no confidence’ in him last year because his decisions have pushed thousands of students out of Chicago Public Schools, he’s cut our schools’ funding to the bone and he’s populated his administration with cronies and political insiders while running roughshod over the voices of parents and teachers.”

Although the next steps of Interim CEO Janice Jackson are to take over where her predecessor left off—she has a great deal of clean-up on her hands. An educator and former principal of Al Raby and Westinghouse College Prep High School—some Black faith leaders are calling for the mayor to make her appointment a permanent one.

A special press conference was held on Tuesday with pastors in support of Jackson.

“Dr. Jackson’s support in our communities is deep and wide”, says Rev. Cy Fields, President of the Leaders Network and Pastor of New Landmark Church.

“She is a product of the system and a professional educator. We have an opportunity to have grassroots support for a system with grassroots leader.”

CTU is not letting up on Jackson, saying: “She’s got to show that she will take a different approach on revenue, reject her predecessor’s agenda to close schools and expand charters, and start listening to educators and parents.”

Now, with the high profile National Teachers Academy (NTA) closing to build a high school and expand more room for the growing South Loop community—along with three Englewood high schools—Claypool may be getting off easy--too easy for many left holding the bag at the expense of our students.

State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago) also shares her concern. Her office released a statement: “With today’s departure of Chicago Public Schools CEO Forrest Claypool, I am calling on Janice Jackson and Frank Clark to keep our schools open and put the resources in place to educate and support our children.”

If You Were an Illinois Resident Who Bought a TV or Monitor Containing a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) between March 1, 1995, and November 25, 2007 A Lawsuit And Settlements May Affect You. What is the lawsuit about?

There is a lawsuit involving cathode ray tubes (“CRTs”). A CRT is a display technology used in televisions in computers before LCD, Plasma and LED display technologies became popular. The lawsuit was brought by the Illinois Attorney General (“Plaintiff”). The lawsuit claims that Defendants conspired to fix, raise, maintain or stabilize prices of CRTs, which resulted in overcharges to consumers who bought products containing the CRTs. The Plaintiff is asking for money damages. The Defendants deny Plaintiff’s allegations or that consumers suffered any overcharge. The Court has not decided who is right.

Settlements have been reached with four Defendants (Hitachi Ltd., LG Electronics, Inc., Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V., Samsung Display Device Co., and certain affiliates). Two Defendants (Toshiba Corp. and Panasonic Corp., and certain affiliates) have not agreed to settle so the lawsuit continues against them. Any future settlements will be posted at www.illinoiscrtsettlement.com.

Who is included in the lawsuit?

The lawsuit involves CRTs purchased indirectly from the Defendants.

“Indirectly” means that you purchased products containing the CRT from someone other than the company that manufactured the component CRT. The case is proceeding to recover money damages that the State alleges were incurred by any Illinois resident (person or business) that purchased a CRT television or monitor between March 1, 1995 and November 25, 2007, while residing in Illinois and for their own use in Illinois and not for resale.

If you are a governmental entity, you may not participate in this settlement.

The State has not brought this lawsuit on behalf of any political subdivision.

Therefore, you may not file a claim and recover damages if you are an Illinois county, municipality, township or other political subdivision.

Plaintiff has also settled potential claims on behalf of the State of Illinois and its agencies. However, this notice does not relate to those settlements and Illinois state agencies are not eligible to participate in this claims process.

What do the settlements provide?

There are four settlements, totaling approximately $36 million. More details are in Settlement Agreements and other documents available at www. illinoiscrtsettlement.com. The cost to administer the Settlements and the Illinois Attorney General’s fees and costs will come out of the Settlement Fund. Plaintiff will request attorney’s fees and costs amounting to 10% of the Settlement Fund.

The maximum amount you could potentially recover is $20 for a CRT television and $60 for a CRT monitor. If there is not enough money recovered to pay the maximum amount, your recovery will depend on the number of claims per device submitted by July 12, 2018 and the total recovery. We expect that such a pro rata distribution will allow for at least $20 per claim and will increase if there are additional settlements or the State prevails at trial against the remaining Defendants.

How can I get a payment?

You must submit a Claim Form to get a payment. You can submit a Claim Form online or by mail. The deadline to submit a Claim Form is July 12, 2018.

Any claims filed after July 12, 2018 will be considered for payment only if settlement funds remain after all valid claims filed by that date have been paid in full. Claim forms are available at the website or by calling 1-866-6528226. No money will be distributed yet. Plaintiff will pursue the lawsuits against the Non-Settling Defendants. All funds received in this case will be distributed together at the conclusion of the lawsuit or as ordered by the Court.

Claims filed by someone else on behalf of or as assignee of the person or entity who actually purchased the CRT television or monitor will not be accepted or paid. For individuals, the name of the person verifying the claim must match that of the person making the claim. For businesses, the individual verifying the claim must be a duly authorized officer of the business. Verification provided by anyone else will be invalid.

What are my rights?

If you do nothing, your rights will be affected. If you do not want to be legally bound by the lawsuit, you must exclude yourself from the lawsuit. If you exclude yourself, you will not get any benefit as a result of the settlements, trial, or judgment in this case. If you do not exclude yourself you will not be able to sue the Defendants for any claim relating to the lawsuit. The deadline to exclude yourself is March 12, 2018. Chance, Google Partner to Benefit Powell Elementary

By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer In the season of giving, Chance The Rapper’s mission to improve the quality of education in Chicago has inspired Google to make a one million dollar donation to his non-profit, SocialWorks, and $500,000 to Chicago Public Schools for computer science education.

The announcement was made at Adam Clayton Powell Paideia Community Academy, 7511 S. Shore Dr. Chance surprised a classroom of students as they were learning computer coding principles by creating fun stories using animals, boats, and the ocean using Scratch, a free programming language, with the assistance of Google volunteers on Google Chromebooks. Chance shared the story he created with Scratch with the students before encouraging them to use technology to follow their passions.

The three-time Grammy award winner has made a habit of making “surprise” appearances. He recently visited Michele Clark HS, 5101 W. Harrison St., where he received a million dollar donation from Jewel on behalf of SocialWorks.

During a schoolwide assembly, Chance electrified the audience with not only his presence but with his words, too. He gave the youth a brief civics lesson where he discussed how tax revenue is generated, the importance of public school funding, and why accountability from individuals of positions of power is important. All the students received complimentary hoodies, book bags, and hats from SocialWorks and Google before the start of the assembly.

“I just want you guys to know that if you’re not getting your fair share, we have failed you; you guys haven’t done anything wrong,” said Chance.

Before closing his remarks, Chance thanked Google, SocialWorks, Power 92.3 Chicago, his business partners, and Powell’s teachers.

“Thank you teachers and principals, I know they’re not treating you fair … I want to thank y’all for everything and making sure that these students are growing up being who they are supposed to be,” said Chance.

Sheila Barlow, principal at Powell, called having a day where Chance The Rapper and Google visit was “great exposure”.

Barlow, a former teacher for five years at Powell before returning as principal for the past three years, said the school has worked hard over the years to lower its mobility rate - the percentage of students who transfer in and out of a school - by putting systems in place to ensure that her students, who range from kindergarten to 8th grade, are “academically sound” and ready for high school. She said over the past few years, her school has had between 500-550 students with a projected goal of reaching 700.

One of the initiatives Barlow has administered is an annual HBCU College Tour for eighth graders. She said she was “excited” for what the next steps would be following the announcement.

Azure Addison, a fifth grade teacher at Powell, said the coding presentation with Google was many of her students’ first experience using coding language in a handson environment. She said prior to the instruction her students have conducted coding related research.

“I’ve never seen [my students] this engaged, ever, and they are a good group of students,” said Addison. “They were definitely glad to see Chance, they had no idea he was coming. I’m glad he came at the end so that they could stay focused on the task, which was coding.”

tained teacher,” which means she spends the majority of her day teaching primarily with the same students all day, each day. She said due to the difference in academic levels amongst her students, creativity is required.

The CPS product hoped other students and schools receive the same opportunity Powell students will benefit from following the announcement. She said the school is a “101 school,” which means every student at Powell has access to Google Chromebooks, Apple iPads, and other pieces of tech every single day.

Who Are Assata’s Daughters? A Q&A with Founder Page May

By Resita Cox City Bureau After Colin Kaepernick donated $25,000 this year to Assata’s Daughters, a Chicago-based organization, conservative news outlets across the country were quick to denounce the group that they said was named after a “cop killer.” Lost in that outcry was an examination of the twoyear-old group’s actual activities: Kaepernick’s announcement stated that $2,500 would go toward the Cop Watch program, another $2,500 for a garden, $5,000 for a library and $15,000 for teen workshops.

Page May started Assata’s Daughters in 2015. After borrowing space from the University of Chicago, the group moved last month into its own building in Washington Park. May says the building is far from perfect—it still needs heating and has more construction to be done—but it is something they’ve never had, a home.

We caught up with her to talk about the group’s programming, approach and how it helps young people power the movement for Black lives.

What was the thought process that led you to create Assata’s Daughters?

I became aware of how important it was for young people to be able to participate in the movement for Black lives after organizing with a group called We Charge Genocide [which promoted youth voices in its work to bring attention to police violence against low-income community and young people of color]. There wasn’t an intentional space for young people to get involved with the movement that really centered their needs. So that was the idea.

Some call you a violence prevention group; some call you a Black liberation group. What do you call you?

Page May ucation and leadership development that is necessary for them to achieve the things that they want to see in their community.

What is your approach?

We meet young people where they’re at and then push. Young people need a lot of support in order for them to be able to participate meaningfully in social change. We are connecting them to resources from expunging their record, to accessing housing and shelter, to help with getting a job.

Secondly, we believe in political education and that people have to get woke before they can get organized. We’re trying to help ground what many young people feel as frustration, rage and alienation by this world and in this city, and giving a historical context to those feelings.

Briefly explain the core programs of Assata’s Daughters We have our juniors program, Akerele, which means one who is strong in spite of being small. That is our weekly political education program for Black girls, ages 6 to 12. Then we have Assata University, our year-round political education program for teens. Topics include environmental justice, Black history and the principles of Black feminism.

We have our leader circle: young people who meet weekly to work on organizing events for the community, organize parts of Assata’s University, do fundraising and also help organize and lead campaigns.

Also, we have two community gardens and hopefully more next summer.

You’ve mentioned that abolitionist politics is woven into Assata’s Daughters. What does that mean?

Right now we have a justice system where, when something goes wrong, your options are to call the police or do nothing.

If you call the police, the best you can hope for is an answer to these questions: Who did it and how do we punish them?

Under abolition, we are fighting for a transformative justice model that asks new questions: Who is harmed, how do we help them and how to make sure that this never happens again? Those aren’t questions that get answered in our current system.

How do you make change happen?

Imagine our people, and let’s say they are stuck under a mountain. Let’s call that mountain slavery, or Jim Crow, or Chicago.

No single person can move that mountain, but we are all stuck under it. We shake and we shiver, and then you get Harriet Tubman and she shakes it, and you get a small crack, and every single person that goes through her makes the crack bigger and bigger. It’s regular people putting tiny fractures into a mountain until it falls—that is how change occurs.

Assata Shakur, your group’s namesake, was a member of the Black Liberation Army who was convicted—some say wrongfully—of shooting a state trooper in 1973. What does her name mean to you?

Assata has a very important role in movement for Black lives. To me, she represents the radical struggle. She’s angry, she’s pissed off and she doesn’t trust the U.S. in ways that resonate with a lot of us.

She fiercely loves her people and she is a political prisoner and a target because she is so powerful. She resists, she survives, she escapes and that is really important for Black people to know, that people have been able to do that.

The name of our group is trying to acknowledge a direct link to history, that the movement for Black lives is not new, neither in terms of the problems we are seeing nor the resistance. We get a lot of flack for it because people are ahistorical and afraid of Black liberation.

12 Voices: The Introduction

By Elle Smith When asked to prepare the foreword for “The Twelve Voices,” the first thing that came to mind was the twelve disciples of Christ--twelve individuals who were “called from among them.” The next thought was twelve months in a year, accompanied by twelve zodiac signs--each being significant for its own reason. The next thought went to the numbers one through twelve on a clock--and that at every twelfth hour, we meet those numbers twice.

Since we are in the holiday season, the twelve days of Christmas entered my mind, and how that “true love” said twelve things, preparing a loved one for twelve gifts. There are twelve jurors in a trial, twelve inches in a foot, and twelve face cards in a deck of

playing cards, which could make or break the hand you’ve been playing.

Without question, the number twelve is significant for these aforementioned reasons and many more, just like the Twelve Voices of the Chicago Defender will prove to be. Through these various voices in columns, we will explore the voices of fashion, finance, technology, and voices that will simply make you think longer and harder about what’s going on around you.

The Kingdom Kees of Marriage: Designed to Be Different

By Reggie Kee 12 Voices My wife and I are different. Though we wholeheartedly believe that we Biblically became one flesh on Aug. 21, 2004, the process of becoming one in mutual submission has been an ongoing challenge for each of us. This process is exacerbated (not accelerated!) by the fact that we are both ministers of the gospel of Jesus Christ – licensed within exactly one week of the other in March of 2015 at the Kingdom Advancement Center (KAC) of Elgin, Reggie and Quiana IL. You would think that sustaining a marriage for Kee 13 years, raising children and starting a church would mean that we are very much on one accord… but we are “knot”! At least we didn’t start out on such ventures that way even though we’ve known each other for 20 years.

You see, I am not a risk-taker… and neither is she. I can see you pausing as you read this and giving a second look at the subtitle of this article.

How are we different if neither of us are risk-takers, though? I’m glad you asked! It’s simple. FAITH changes everything. Once faith is required, I take on a different persona. What was once risk transforms into opportunity to obey the LORD – without dilemma or delay.

It was by FAITH that I moved to Illinois from Maryland without a single job prospect to marry Quiana in 2002. I had only been in communication with God via a prayer list I’d created about who my wife would be. After searching for what seemed like my entire life, I’d grown tired of my head being on swivel every time a new young lady entered onto the scene. Even when that new young lady was Quiana, it didn’t turn into what I’d been looking for right away. When I saw that she had every quality that I wanted except for her distant location, it was faith that caused me to look at my circumstance not as a setback but as a set up to find the bride of my prayers.

It was by FAITH that I heard the Lord tell me it was time to “GO” to a place He would show me after years of frustration and stagnation at the church where we were married. I moved on that single-word command without seeing/knowing what our next church home would be (or that we THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

would be asked to help BUILD it!).

It was by FAITH… that I left the stability of a job I had worked for 8 years – after hearing yet another single-word command from God: “QUIT.” I had sought after and secured this job working in Chicago (a one hour commute from where we lived) not by faith but by my own sight, and God began convicting me halfway through my time there that my talents were needed in the city I lived in yet had left behind.

As you can imagine, this last FAITH act, by divine design – really brought out Quiana and my differences!

Situations that require me to trust in the Lord galvanize me to take action without knowing the outcome. Yet, as I look ahead and reach my hand backwards, my wife’s hand isn’t as quick to take hold of what I (don’t) see-- what Hebrews 11:1 calls “…the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Though my wife has witnessed and benefitted from what happens when I’ve walked by faith previously, she was not in favor of this last leap.

I had always noted and frequently joked about how if I were to make a comment on how blue the sky was, she would contend that it was really red!

Over time, as the honeymoon wore off, I began to see this difference of opinion as opposition which allowed resentment to set in. After all, if I am following Christ as my head and she is following me as head of the household (see Ephesians 5:23 and 1 Corinthians 11:3), why then, is she: •disagreeing with me?

•delayed in reaction?

•asking questions I don’t have the time or ability to answer?

•not going along with the process?

Finally, if she’s REALLY bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh now… WHY in the WORLD is she so DIFFERENT? Be sure to come back next month as my wife provides the counter/conclusion to this two-part series: Designed to Be Different.

The On Spot: It’s About Choices

By Elle Smith 12 Voices It’s absolutely amazing to see how the way one chooses to “live” can have an impact on so much.

If you live a healthy life, your body and skin will reflect this.

If you live a fastpaced life, your body and skin will reflect Elle Smith this as well. But in your living, have you ever given thought to how your choices of life will make (or break) a difference in the lives of those around you, and even in the lives of people you don’t even know?

As a teenager, one thing I remember doing is breaking curfew.

Maybe not tons of times, but I do remember the times where I broke curfew with no explanation as to why. At the time, I was only concerned with whatever “fun” was going on in that moment…never giving a second thought to what my parents may have been going through while I was out. You see, now that I am older, and I have had many “close calls” and such, I tend to think about what my actions may be doing to someone else.

As a teenager, if I had only taken a moment to think about how my parents worried until I walked through that door, maybe curfew wouldn’t have been ignored.

The reason why I am able to

think more about another person is because of so many “life decisions” that are broadcast on the news, in newspapers, in magazines, etc. Chicago has been known for quite some time for the violence that takes place in this city. Some of the violence is attributed to “individuals and their decisions.” Here’s an example to ponder: a young man, maybe age 18, has found himself mixed in with a criminal crowd and decides to venture off into selling drugs. Well, this young man eventually embraces gang culture and has committed several crimes. Yet, this same young man comes to his home every night, and his family may or may not know what is TRULY going on with him in the streets. As fate would have it, he was robbed by a rival gang member…and his money for drugs sold is due. He tries to have a conversation with his leader, but the conversation does not go as planned. The young man now finds himself hiding from the same people he initially embraced.

Those same people are only following the orders they were given, and now the young man’s family finds themselves injured, and their home has been shot up, or worse.

This young man’s “life decisions” are now impacting the lives of those around him.

Changing the narrative: what if he had gotten mixed in with the studious and seriously focused crowd, looking to go to college, graduate, and have successful careers? The lives around him would also be impacted because his fam continued on page 17

City.Life.Style Evelyn’s Food Love: A New Jewel in Chicago’s Washington Park

By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer There is a burgeoning effort to bring new economic growth to the Washington Park area—and executive chef and restaurant owner Evelyn Shelton is helping that effort.

Located at 5522 S. State Street, Evelyn’s Food Love opened in late May 2017 with a mission to provide a warm and comfortable dining experience. Shelton has worked as the Executive Chef of Northwestern UniEvelyn Shelton versity’s culinary facility for several years—a highly coveted role.

Having always worked in food service and the culinary industry, Shelton says she strived in the hopes that one day she would own her restaurant.

“When you work with people for a long time in the food industry, you see the potential to make money. I thought I’ve always wanted to open up a Jazz supper club and I may still, but this idea came into fruition faster—this is the one that we have.

She felt it was important to be in a community that craved the necessity of a quality restaurant with great food and wonderful service. The thought was to stay in a community that needed some economic energy. We wanted either Washington Park, Englewood or South Shore. This is the place we decided on because we were able to purchase the property,” says Shelton.

Nestled next door to a church, Evelyn’s is conveniently easy to find although the black iron wrought gates may be a little discerning—the exterior décor of the blazing red door which welcomes visitors into a wide-open space of beautiful artwork hanging from the exposed brick walls.

Shelton says the concept came out of her head into reality thanks to architect Brian Hudson. In hiring Hudson, Shelton was able to highlight her love for art from her personal collection and provide a warm and comfortable dining environment. “We wanted a see-through kitchen because we have nothing to hide. We’re not hiding behind curtains, we’re not hiding behind bulletproof glass, and that’s exactly what we got. We wanted someplace that was going to be comfortable where people would want to sit down and relax.”

Influenced by various cultures, the menu is a daily theme of choices presented on a large, black chalk board along with a selective hot enclosed counter of dishes.

“The menu changes pretty regularly, which some people like, and some people just want to order from the counter. We’re really not a soul food restaurant, but we do soul food very well, just like we do ev10 December 13 - 19, 2017

From their baked BBQ or fried chicken to the catfish po’boys—the food is fresh and ready to order. Evelyn has some tasty signature entrees to keep customers coming back for more.

“We do a roasted fish—roasted catfish every single day. We make our own dry rub and our own spreads,” she says.

They also make their sauces and spreads from scratch.

“They come back for the crawfish, shrimp and grits. They come in here for the friend lobster tails and the apple cilantro turkey burger, which we make from scratch.”

Shelton explains, the burger is charbroiled and they do not bring in food that’s pre-packaged, fried, breaded or pre-frozen. Everything is made fresh from the beginning to when it’s delivered to the customer. Whether you’re dining in or carrying out—all food is provided in disposable containers.

“We’ve opted to go for the carry out containers. So, when people eat, you know what they wanted. If you don’t finish your meal, it’s already in a to-go-box—we give you a bag and everybody’s happy,” she said. The containers also keep down overhead costs of an extra dishwasher or busboy, and that avoids any additional costs being passed to customers.

Opening up a new business is never easy and although the economy seems to be on stronger ground than several years ago—it helps to have a supportive lender such as Local Initiative Support Company (LISC).

“They worked really hard to make sure that I had access to capital, to get every single thing that I needed in order to get this project off the ground, and that’s what you need.” Shelton says it is important to have “your ducks in a row” and to “invest in yourself” to show your investors that you have skin in the game--in addition to good credit. She adds, “People need to know that you will give them their money back at some point.”

With a small staff, Shelton relies heavily on her team who reside in the community. “We are doing every single day what we enjoy doing—what we love to do. We try to bring that to the general public, and I hope we continue to have that success.”

Her range of television credits are active from her role on Syfy’s “Superstition” with Mario Van Peebles; the drama series “Saints and Sinners;” BET’s popular “The Quad” and Tyler Perry’s sitcom “House of Payne” returning for another season in 2018.

But, if you didn’t have a chance to catch her on all of the above television shows—just turn on the radio because her hit song “Easy” is a major hit.

While she was traveling on the Fantasia Christmas After Midnight Tour, The Defender sat down to discuss how McKinney balances her successful career.

You have a great deal of projects happening? How do you balance it all?

It’s funny, it’s just a testament to what’s for you in God’s time. It’s also about not being upset or stressed out about stuff—it’s human. But you got to kind of let things go.

Congratulations on the success of “Easy.” How did you come up with the concept and who wrote it?

It’s an amazing love song. What I love about “Easy” is that they’re gravitating to the message. It’s great to see that in the midst of reality television where everybody is like ‘Yes, I’ll do this for that or I’ll do this for a shirt or for a car,’ people are saying ‘I’m worth love, I’m worth substance, I’m worth the mindset that agrees with mine.’

Who wrote the song?

Courtlin Jabrae, Devin Horton and myself. It was a collaborative effort.

My album is comprised of a couple of different writers—some of them are known and some of them are not,

Demetria McKinney: It’s Not As “Easy” As You Think

Demetria McKinney but they all speak my language. I really wanted to tell stories from my point of view. This “Easy” moment came from being tired of being approached at the bar and they think they can come at me with that same line that same thing and the minute I say ‘no’— ‘she stuck up and she got an attitude’. I have high expectations—damn right! I deserve because I give. And sometimes as women, I feel we kind of diminish everything that we give, and we take the scraps because it’s what is available. No, you wait for the right thing and make them give it to you.

Since you have so many irons in the fire, have you

had time to enjoy your personal time for yourself?

I would really love to take this wig off and sit it on the headrest as if it were my bestie. [she laughs] But those moments where I used to be able to of walk out looking any kind of way, being any kind of way and acting silly in public, I have to be aware of this. To understand there’s consequences, and everything that comes with fame comes with a consequence.

As an independent artist, we’ve seen a great deal of changes in the music business. Does it help to still have a major label in your corner?

Having a partner in radio and in finance is great, but I still had to make sure that everybody understood I am a partner. With EOne, they ask me what would I like to do; they offer their opinions about things, but ultimately, they’re very gracious in letting me take the lead on my project.

I had to build from scratch and I was building for 10 years before “Easy” really hit. I was doing A&R while I was on the road with R. Kelly and while I was out with Charlie Wilson. On tour with Fantasia right now, I’m still learning.

I think that the biggest difference as an independent artist signed to a small label is that I get the best of both worlds.

As a Black artist, do you feel there is a dominance of White artists taking over R&B music without due respect to our culture and significant contribution?

I feel we’re in a good place and I’m going to say why.

When you have an artist like an Adele who can sell the kind of records that she’s sold—I have no problem with that. As long as you own it-- if we can say I listened to James Brown. I listened to Etta James. I listen to this person and those are my influences. Ultimately in the body of work that you are doing, you are celebrating our culture and the people who started it. Holiday Celebrations Continue Throughout City The Holidays are fast approaching and so are the celebrations and special events.

I was honored to have been the guest speaker for the 5th Annual Principal’s Breakfast, “The Time Is Now To Celebrate Our Principals.” The event was presented by the Far South Community Action Council (FSCAC), Chairman Joyce A. Chapman, whose mission it is to develop and nurture partnership and communication with the school and community. The event was attended by principals from Networks 10, 11, 12, and 13 of the Chicago Public Schools and community leaders and local political leaders. I would like to compliment the Emcee of the event Apostle Dr. Yvonne Wilson, FSCAC Vice Chair; great job! Dr. Carmen Palmer, Dr. Lois Gueno, Ms. Cynthia Powell, Mrs. Sharon Banks-Pincham and Mr. Kenneth Samuels produced an informative principal survey.

The Delivery Point Band was the absolute “bomb” at the Wendell Phillips Centennial Committee’s 9th Annual “Blue and White Gala,” which was held at the Oak Lawn Hilton.

I got to celebrate the 14th Annual Prayer Breakfast with Pastor Dewitt Harris at Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church and we went to “church” on Saturday. A great time was had by all! The singing family “Stars in Heaven” turned the house out!

I also joined the Chicago Illinois Chapter of the Links, Incorporated at their holiday party held at the Montgomery Club. The event was chaired by Link Murrell Duster and reflections were given by Link Cheryl Rayner, Vice President.

In The Mix: ‘Tis the Chicago Political Season

This statewide primary race is considered to be one of the busiest and “on the grind” hustles we’ve seen in a long time. With close to 40 gubernatorial forums alone and other forums being launched before Christmas, we are taking a deep breath and plenty of vitamins.

On Tuesday evening, the first Attorney General’s forum took place at Northeastern Illinois University Carruthers Center for Inner Mary L. Datcher City Studies. The discussion was moderated by Maudlyne Ihejirika (Chicago Sun-Times) and Cliff Kelley (WVON).

On Monday, Commissioner Richard Boykin called out what many had known for the last few years on the limited contractual opportunities for minority-owned businesses from Cook County. Not a “shy” one to call a press conference, this one in particular struck a chord because of $165 million issued by the county in procurement contracts—he says, “zero percent of prime contracts went to African American firms.”

Wow. That’s not even a “small percentage”—it’s simply “not even one” out of how many credible and qualified Black firms? Surrounded by political stakeholders and candidates—he went on to wag his finger at Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and his fellow board members for not complying when 26 percent of Black residents make up the county’s population and 76 percent of its patients are treated at the county’s health and hospitals.

Somebody’s got some explaining to do. Election time is here—folks let’s take notes.

Last week’s news of TV One discontinuing its News One morning show featuring primary host and journalist Roland Martin came as a shock to viewers and Black social media. The only news related show on Cathy Hughes’ network broke the news to Martin and his staff giving them a two-week notice of its last show airing on December 21.

Although the network stated it was due to lack of advertisement response and continued drop in revenue—some may wonder why the network chose to go from the original one-hour to two-hour increase in the last four years.

While The Defender’s former Editor has built an impressive following since the 2008 presidential election, becoming a regular commentator on CNN with his “no holds barred” political style—some questioned senior management’s decision to silence the only Black cable network news program. But others are not surprised either—throughout the years, Martin’s bluntness and unique bedside manner have rubbed some in his path the “wrong way.” Just ask former WHPK radio host and local influencer Mario Smith, who basically took to Facebook Live his discord for Martin after a nasty Twitter exchange a few years ago. Smith didn’t hold back his feelings in calling him an “a**hole” among other not-so-nice words. Can we just all get along?

We know Martin will land somewhere in the media sphere along with his 1 million+ Twitter followers, hopefully keeping people well-informed and “woke.”

The 100 Black Men of Chicago hosted their annual toy drive last week at Alhambra Palace where close to 600 people attended throughout the evening bringing arms full of unwrapped toys. Shout out to 100 BMC President Carl Tutt, the board and members for doing a superb job this year.

The Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) hosted their annual Senior’s Christmas luncheon at the Hyatt Regency where 1,500 residents arrived being treated to a lavish meal, entertainment and prizes. They showed up dressed to impress and the festivities were wonderful. Our elders are our foundation.

Next door, Common Ground Foundation hosted a beautiful holiday brunch for their participating students at the Blue Cross Blue Shield downtown headquarters.

Common was in attendance, meeting and greeting students and their parents with his signature smile—taking pictures and joking. His mother and educator, Dr. Mahalia Hines, has nurtured and built the nonprofit for the past 14 years—helping young people throughout their formative school years. Many have gone on to four-year institutions and are mentored by local professionals. The program included an in-depth panel discussion sharing with students the importance of entrepreneurship. Shout out to Linda Owens and Julia Johnson on a job well done with organizing the brunch.

On The Front Porch: The Power of Affirmation

By Shanita Baraka Akintonde 12 Voices Welcome to On the Front Porch, where my lived experiences as a Black woman, wife, mother, professor, business consultant, daughter, sister, and friend incandescently converge to shape and inform my approach to writing this column.

On the Front Porch has myriad meanings in terms of spaces and places in the Shanita Baraka Black community, Akintonde and just prior to the last decade, largely conjured feelings of nostalgia and/ or safety. However, in June 2016, a CNN report by Rosa Flores, Mallory Simon and Madeleine Stix entitled, “The Disappearing Front Porch,” highlighted the plight of several children and their families in our great city from 2001-2016, many of whom got caught up in the crosshairs of bullets that impacted their very safety on or near those very same front porches. In the words of one Stephanie Armstrong, one of the grandmother’s profiled in the piece, as she stood on her own front porch, “There is violence everywhere. You can’t run from it. It’s the city we live in; but you have to learn how to survive in it.”

These are perilous times, particularly for Black people who are increasingly being marginalized, mistreated and even murdered. My concept for this column is to create a virtual “front porch,” an ideological inundation of media narrative that is derived from the urgent need to facilitate authentic conversations and share spiritual fortification.

For me, this belief is derived from my family’s annual trips to Brinkley, Ark., or as I call it, BLINK-ly, a town so small that if you blink, you could miss it. The highlights of this excursion were my experiences with my great-grandmother Lucille Jones, or Great Grand as I called her, whose stories and life events greatly influenced my understanding of the world and what I thought my contributions would be. Born in 1898, Great Grand was a stout woman, wide in berth, with skin the color of melted caramel and a shock of silver hair swirled atop her head, like white cotton candy.

Each summer, our arrival to Great Grand’s wooden frame home was heralded by warm greetings, hugs and kisses bestowed on us from the front porch by a slew of uncles, aunts, cousins, and people simply claiming to be related to us. Throughout the entire gathering Great Grand would sit in her rocking chair that sat in the middle of the porch, her intense gaze seeing all and saying nothing-- at first. When she did speak to me, the compliments poured, like the molasses syrup used to “sop” the homemade biscuits she made every morning. “You’re such a beautiful girl, look at

those big pretty eyes!” “She’s as smart as a whip, I tell you!” But the best compliment, which was always the same, was, “You are going to do this family proud.”

“Ay-men!” the porch choir would respond in agreement.

I, in turn, could feel my entire body swell up from pride. Great Grand’s words were transformative in nature, a confirmation that certain words, when spoken with care, can give others faith in themselves.

The adults would then congregate on Great Grand’s front porch for hours of “fellowship,” proceeding to probe, prod, and cajole one another into conversations about triumphs and tragedies and love and loss. I bore witness to many of these sessions, which often lasted deep into the night.

Though I never consciously strove to imitate my “kinfolk” who sat on Great Grand’s porch during those summer visits, in retrospect I can see how the values I gained during those “sessions” are stamped on my soul. I plan to deploy many of those same tactics in this column. As I do so, I invite you, the readers, to join me. It will be a metaphorical and literal reference to my attempt to remember and/or affirm who we all are-- human beings in need of encouragement and reassurance on both all levels of the human spirit.

#TheBIGS Presents: This Week’s Top 5 High School Hoopers

Simeon’s Talen Horton-Tucker climbs to the top of #TheBIGS Top 5 List after a strong performance in “The Battle Of Vincennes”

We had the “Battle Of Vincennes,” where Simeon went to Morgan Park and beat the Mustangs handily 70-57. We also traveled to Farragut to watch the Whitney Young Dolphins defeat the Admirals 63-54. Then we traveled to Mount Carmel, where the 10th annual Rose Shootout was held this past weekend. The latest installment of “#TheBigs Top Chicago High School Hoopers” brings a huge shakeup in the rankings as we have a new #1 hooper and a new entry to our rankings!

1. Talen Horton-Tucker (Sr- Simeon) – “Talow” and the Simeon Wolverines made a big statement as they went into Morgan Park and knocked off the Mustangs 7057. He finished the game with 17 points and 6 rebounds and had a huge block on Ayo Dosunmu on a fast break dunk attempt. I’m sure everyone was looking for more of a matchup between #TheBigs #1 and #2 ballers, but they really only matched up a couple of times. With the huge win and solid performance from their #1 guy, Horton-Tucker has taken the lead as #TheBIGS #1 Hooper.

Last Week’s Rank - #2 2. Ayo Dosunmu (Sr- Morgan Park) - Ayo scored 18 points to lead Morgan Park, but they fell short in the 7057 loss to Simeon in “The Battle Of Vincennes.” To their credit, MP is without starting center/UAB commit Tamell Pearson, but that’s when other players step up and the star takes it to another level to make his team better. Pearson out until what seems to be February, Ayo will have to step his game up if the Mustangs are to challenge for the city and state titles. Last Week’s Rank - #1 3. Javon Freeman (Sr- Whitney Young) - In his last outing, Freeman found himself in foul trouble within the first 2 minutes of the game. Head coach Ty Slaughter sat him down for the 1st half and Young went into halftime down 7. He came back in the 2nd half and exerted himself right away. A couple of 1’s and a great 2nd half by Xavier Castaneda helped Young get control of the game and pull away with the victory. It’s evident how much Freeman means to his team. Last Week’s Rank- #3 4. George Conditt (Sr- Corliss) - The big guy led Corliss to 3 wins since our last ranking. He scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds while blocking 4 shots in a 7752 victory over Rantoul. He has the Trojans balling right now and they’re looking for some respect on their name around the city. We will check Corliss out this Sunday in the Arne Duncan Classic at Orr High School. Last Week’s Rank- #4 5. Dannie Smith (Sr- Orr) - The versatility of Smith stands out most. He does the dirty work inside and also steps outside to open his game up. He had 25 points in the loss to Danville but made big shot after shot down the stretch. By Terrence Tomlin & Eugene McIntosh Sports By #TheBIGS Simeon Wolverines crowned Kings of Vincennes Chicago sports has its fair share of rivalry games--Bears vs Packers, Cubs vs Cardinals, The Crosstown Classic, but if you fail to mention “The Battle Of Vincennes” in this same group, you’re making a big mistake. Not only is the annual Morgan Park vs Simeon matchup the most cracking high school basketball game of the year, with the state the Bulls are in, it just might be the best hoops matchup the city has to offer regardless of league. It was no different last Thursday night for the latest installment of “The Battle Of Vincennes” with Simeon taking home bragging rights with a dominant 70-57 win over the Morgan Park Mustangs.

Messiah Jones led Simeon with 23 points and 11 rebounds contributing 6 yams to the dunk fest. The BIGS #2 ranked Hooper Talen Horton-Tucker had 17 points and 6 rebounds and the Xavier “The X-Factor” Pinson scored 12 points. The BIGS #1 ranked Hooper Ayo Dosunmu scored THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

18 to lead the Mustangs with sophomore Adam Miller scoring 6 points.

Simeon’s Pinson put an explanation point on the win with a monster 4th quarter dunk that sent the Wolverine fans in attendance into a frenzy. “My brother told me stop trying to lay it up and dunk it like Westbrook, so I tried my best to cock it back as far as I could and dunk it,” said Pinson.

Peace in the Madhouse On Madison With Zach Lavine’s return from ACL surgery slated for January, the infamous punch heard around the league and the Bulls sporting the worst record in the NBA, it’s been easy to pay the Bulls a mere side-eye worth of attention.

Fans have all but thrown in the white flag on this season in favor of #TheTank in hopes of being rewarded for their pains with a top pick in next year’s draft…but don’t tell that to Fred Hoiberg. “We’re not thinking that way,” he said as his Bulls hit a groove in the last week going 3-1 and are on a 3-game winning streak with W’s over the Hornets, Knicks and Kyrie-less Celtics.

Simeon’s Talen Horton-Tucker is this weeks #TheBIGS #1 Hooper (John L. Alexander/The Bigs Visuals) as the two have both lead the charge during the current 3-game winning streak. But with the Bulls rep and record placing them at the bottom of the league, it’s fair to assume that plans for #TheTank are still in full effect. Their streak will face a stiff test in the next week with games versus the Jazz (12/13), Bucks(12/15) and 76’ers (12/18) on deck.

Bears News You Can Use We interrupt your Bear hibernation to bring you some good news. This past Sunday we were treated to a glimpse of just how good the future may be with the Bears 33-7 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals stumbled into Sunday after a brutal battle with the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, but in a season where blame is being passed around like a joint on 4/20, it’s refreshing to give credit where credit is due. Jordan Howard’s 147 rushing yards made him the first Bear to rush for 1,000 yards in his first 2 seasons. You may now return to you Bear hibernation.

Cubs Strike At Winter Meetings The week started off with Theo and Jed trying to find a way to “wow” Japanese star Shohei Ohtani, but they watched him go to the Los Angeles Angels. It ended with them agreeing to terms with RHP Tyler Chatwood, formally of the Rockies, and closer Brandon Morrow, formally of the Dodgers.
