There is an old political saying that goes, “Good politics equals good government, and good government equals good politics.” Politics defined is the interrelationships between the people, groups and organizations in a particular area of life insofar as they involve power and influence or conflict. Taking that definition of politics into account is important in providing context for understanding how and why people are chosen or appointed to positions of power in government at all levels. Politics is the process that transforms a citizen into an elected official, which then gives the elected official the ability to govern. So politics, by its very nature is transactional—whether Democrat or Republican. In Illinois, the transactional nature of pol-
itics has often come under scrutiny, not only from local watchdogs and media outlets, but also by the federal government. Long known as the corruption capital of the nation, the underbelly of transactional politics in Illinois have been in the national spotlight. Illinois governors Ryan and Blagojevich were sentenced to federal prison for what had previously been known as political horse trading. While they are two of the more egregious examples, transactional politics continues. To the victor goes the spoils, and part of those spoils include key cabinet, board, agency appointments, and jobs that are known as “exempt positions,” which are all generally reserved for the winner’s supporters. The level of those appointments are generally based on what the appointee was able to provide the politician during the campaign, with the top spots often going to high level political donors,
business leaders, and campaign volunteers. Generally, the appointees are expected to advance the agenda of the elected official that appoints them. In this article we will examine some of the most recent appointments of Illinois Republican Governor Bruce Rauner, why they were appointed, what the appointment means, but most importantly, what it means to the Black constituency that they represent. Rauner Appointments When candidate Bruce Rauner threw his hat in the ring to be the governor of Illinois, he knew he faced an uphill battle, particularly because of the Democratic dominance in Cook County. That dominance is widely credited to the Black community. Blacks vote for Democrats more than 90 percent of the time in one of the largest counties in the nation. The President Visits Ethiopia News Feed Chicago Defender ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — President Obama pressed the government of Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn on Monday to ease restrictions on free speech, the press and political opposition in the impoverished East African nation. “When all voices are being heard, when people know they are being included in the political process, that makes a country more successful,” Obama said at a joint news conference with Desalegn. Later Monday, Obama and representatives from the 54-nation African Union, headquartered here, met to discuss terrorism, human rights and regional security issues. The White House said most of the discussion focused on neighboring South Sudan, which has been embroiled in a bloody civil war since December 2013. Before the meeting, Obama said that “conditions on the ground (in South Sudan) are getting much, much worse.” South Sudan, which became a nation in July 2011, has until Aug. 17 to accept a peace and power-sharing agreement between warring government factions. Most of the discussion Monday focused on how to get an agreement next month, and some participants talked about sanctions or military intervention if the warring parties fail to settle their differences, the White House said. Obama’s visit to Ethiopia is a first by a sitting U.S. president, and the second country on a two-stop tour that began in neighboring Kenya, the nation where his late father was born. Around this capital city, security was tight, with roadblocks on major thoroughfares and residents — as in Kenya — ordered to stay home and out of the downtown area. Even so, residents came out in force, hoping to take photos of Obama as he drove by. “I’m heading to town on foot to try my luck if I can see President Obama passing,” said Aluka Kemal, 35, a businessman who lives in the neighborhood of Gulele. Some held posters of Obama, chanted his name and sang songs. Ethiopia’s economy has been growing by nearly 10% annually in recent years but remains one of Africa’s poorest nations, with unemployment around 17%. It is the second-most populous country in Africa, after Nigeria, and faces a threat from al-Shabab militants based in neighboring Somalia. Ethiopia has taken part in regional military operations against the group. In a dramatic illustration of democracy in action, Barack Obama on Tuesday told the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia that he would love to remain president for a third term, but is unfortunately barred by the U.S. Constitution, according to CNN.The president gently urged the Ethiopian government towards democracy after a long era of rule
by monarchy and autocracy, twice calling the government of Ethiopia “democratically elected.” SIDE NOTES From CNN: “I think if I ran again I could win. But I can’t!” Obama said. Obama’s quip came during a speech to the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the first address to the group by a U.S. president. The loudest applause line came when Obama said he didn’t understand the motivation behind remaining in power through force — even when leaders have “got a lot of money.” Two months ago, an election handed every seat in Parliament to the governing party and its allies, according to The New York Times. Human rights groups wanted Obama to denounce what they called “a sham election.”
He is the first sitting U.S. president to visit Ethiopia, a fast-growing economy, which was once defined by poverty and famine. From The New York Times: Although human rights groups had called on Mr. Obama to use his visit to press for change, the president took a mild tone in his public remarks. He gently urged the Ethiopian government to make room for opposition, while stressing his respect for the country and its challenges in emerging from a long era of monarchy and autocracy. “We are very mindful of Ethiopia’s history, the hardships that this country has gone through,” Mr. Obama said at a joint news conference with Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn. “It has been relatively recently in which the Constitution
that was formed, and elections put forward a democratically elected government.” He added that “there is still more work to do, and I think the prime minister is the first to acknowledge that there is more work to do.” The elections in May were condemned by human rights groups as a sham. The government made it hard for opposition candidates to register, raise money and mobilize supporters, according to watchdog groups. Peaceful protesters were denied permits, harassed and in some cases arrested. News organizations were shut down and reporters harassed, threatened or arrested. Between addressing democracy in Ethiopia and stating that he would win a third election in the U.S., it looks like Obama isn’t pulling any punches in his last days in office.

Another Strike Against Chicago Rapper Chief Keef By Elan Edwards Contributing Writer Not the most popular of rappers, amongst officials so when Rapper Chief Keef appeared — via hologram — at a Hammond music festival Saturday night, his performance was shut down by police within minutes. Unfortunately his reputation precedes itself and it’s tainted by the violence that is associated with his concerts and the most recent incident ending in a 18 month old toddler’s death hasn’t helped his image. The concert, planned as a benefit for the toddler Dillan Harris and a friend of the rapper’s who were killed earlier this month, was originally scheduled to take place last week at Pilsen’s Redmoon Theater however the Mayor made sure that it didn’t happen with a little help from south side Father Pfleger. Both indicated that the show “posed a significant public safety risk,” causing the theater management to rethink the agreement with Keef and the relinquished their agreement. Thus the event was canceled. But Chief Keef, a Chicago native whose real name is Keith Cozart, determined not to be stopped planned a show at an undisclosed location, originally thought to be in Chicago. That turned out to be Craze Fest, a day-long hip-hop festival at Wolf Lake Pavilion in Hammond, Ind. About 2,000 people attended the event, which featured rappers Lil Bibby, Jacqueese, Tink and Riff Raff, organizers said. Chief Keef partnered with Los Angeles-based Hologram USA to beam his performance to Indiana from a soundstage in Beverly Hills, Calif. The rapper, who has had various legal troubles in Illinois, opted not to return to the Midwest, citing several outstanding warrants. Organizers encouraged fans to donate $50 to benefit the families of 13-month-old Dillan Harris and Marvin Carr, 22, who were killed July 11. Dillan was killed in the Woodlawn neighborhood by a vehicle fleeing the scene of a shooting that killed Carr, a rapper who went by the name Capo and was an associate of Chief Keef. To the events detriment there was not much detailed information about where Saturday’s show would actually take place . On Saturday afternoon, Chief Keef
posted, then quickly removed, an Instagram photo of Wolf Lake Pavilion, encouraging fans to buy tickets. Later, tweeted that the show would take place at Lincoln Hall in Lincoln Park. Lincoln Hall representatives had no record of Chief Keef performing at their venue since Rock band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah was already booked to play the venue. About 9 p.m., Chief Keef’s spokesman, Owen Phillips, confirmed the hologram performance would take place in Hammond. It was also streamed live on filmon.tv. Chief Keef played one song, his hit “I Don’t Like,” and was talking about putting a stop to violence when the power was cut off. Police bum rushed toward the stage, turning the music off about 10:25 p.m. Shining flashlights, they ordered concert-goers to leave. Fans who gathered Saturday left the grounds in an orderly fashion, though disappointed. Sisters Asherah and Stefanae Coleman, of Chicago, stood on the corner of Sheffield and Calumet avenues waiting for their mom to pick them up early. They were furious at the decision to cut the concert short. “They shut down a hologram and told us we had to leave. (Chief Keef) wasn’t even here,” said Asherah Coleman, 18. “We’re in two different time zones.”

Both sisters said the 6 1/2hour concert was without incident, and people were having a good time. Then, just as the hologram of Chief Keef was finishing the song “I Don’t Like,” Stefanae said the music was turned down, the screen went black and Hammond police officers holding flashlights ushered people off the stage. “There was no violence. It was the police who did this,” said Stefanae, 17. “Everyone was happy. … We went through the whole show without any problems. “They just waited for Chief Keef, and that’s what irks me. (The police) do this, then they get mad that we’re mad. It’s disrespectful to us.” “Whoever paid the $80 for the VIP tickets got burned,” Asherah Coleman added. “I’m still confused.” Hammond police Cmdr. Pat Vicari said the promoters were warned the concert would be shut down if Chief Keef performed. “We spoke to the promoter several times, and they assured us (Chief Keef) would not be performing,” Vicari said. “Later, an officer working the show realized it was being streamed on one of the hip-hop sites, and promoters were warned again they would be shut down.” It doesn’t matter that the police warned them. Chief Keef
is a citizen in America last we heard. Rock Concerts end in violence as well and concerts s are not prohibited from going on. And there was no guarantee that Chief Keef’s performance would have incited violence. Apparently it did not. If he says he wants to send the message out to end violence, then let him. Who better than him? The youth like him. They listen to him. Taking his lead from Rahm Emanuel, Hammond’s mayor stood to forbid the performance. “All I’d heard was he has a lot of songs about gangs and shooting people — a history that’s anti-cop, pro-gang and pro-drug use,” Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. told the New York Times. “He’s been basically outlawed in Chicago, and we’re not going to let you circumvent Mayor Emanuel by going next door.” The government is out of its purview here. As a public, such tactics have to be carefully watched. The taking of citizens rights into its hands without proper reference to legal stature is a dangerous road to go down. Nazi’s deemed Jews to be subversive and began by denying them rights and destroying their art, books, music and outlawed it so that others could not be influenced. Americans have the right to choose what they want
to listen to, dance to read, write or view. It is not police or government business. This sort of over policing or authoritative zealous oppressive behavior is a problem. It is actually very fascist behavior. It is understood that they mean well but there has to be a better way. Hologram USA CEO Alki David expressed anger that the concert was shut down so abruptly. “Shame on the mayor and police chief of Hammond for shutting down a voice that can create positive change in a community in desperate need. And for taking away money that could have gone to help the victims’ families,” David said in a statement. “This was a legal event and there was no justification to shut it down besides your glaring disregard for the first amendment right to free speech. There is truth in what Alki David said, “Mark my words if you censor us you only make us stronger.” He’s threatening to sue. Nick Watts, co-CEO of festival organizer Craze Productions, said despite the violent themes in some Chief Keef songs, young people listen to him. When police shut down the show, “(Chief Keef) said, ‘stop the violence,’ ” said Watts, 21. “It’s not about necessarily the lyrics in Chief Keef’s songs. He’s who the young people want to see. He’s who they listen to,” said Watts, expressing disappointment the fundraiser was derailed. “We just really want to make sure we got the message out that we’re stopping the violence and we’re partying in peace,” he said.

The TRUMP FIASCO Well it just keeps getting more and more interesting as we watch all the different GOP presidential hopefuls come forth to throw their hats in the ring and jockey for position. They’re up to 18 candidates who are going for the nomination. More importantly are the questions that we ask ourselves. Is it a sign of major dissension amongst the Republicans? Are the chickens coming home to roost? And if so can the Republican Party take it like it throws it? I don’t think so. They have revealed so much about themselves just by the sheer numbers of republicans spouting off, pontificating and standing so self-righteously while loathing of others. First we know that the GOP doesn’t have a ‘sure thing’— that one candidate that the party can rally behind. However it appears that the very obnoxious Donald Trump in all his ignorance of decorum and people skills is in the forefront. I have my own thoughts about it. Isn’t it interesting how these men who are senators, attorneys, doctors, governors and business men have stood in front of millions and actually said very stupid things, gender bias and racist comments but when Sarah Palin said such equally ignorant things, it went viral and all of the United States discussed her ignorance. She was not respected by men and embarrassed women. Now I was no Palin fan however I am pointing out that the overall position of the GOP is very male orientated and insensitive with all things having to do with women’s rights. That’s a clearing for Hillary. Women are tired of men assuming that we don’t count except for when it comes time for a vote. Donald Trump introduced his presidential campaign to the world with a slur against Mexican immigrants, accusing them of being “rapists” and bringing crime into the country. “I mean somebody’s doing it! . . . Who’s doing the raping?” Donald Trump said, when asked to defend his characterization. It was an unfortunate turn of phrase for Trump—in more ways than one. Not only does the current front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination have a history of controversial remarks about sexual assault, and to further escalate the issue, his ex-wife Ivana Trump once used the term “rape” to describe an incident between them in 1989. She later said she felt “violated” by the experience. The educated know that violated is a synonym for rape. Trump’s special counsel at the Trump Organization, Michael Cohen, defended Mr. Trump saying, “You’re talking about the front-runner for the GOP, presidential candidate, as well as private individual who never raped anybody. And, of course, understand that by the very definition, you can’t rape your spouse.” 6 July 29 - Aug. 4, 2015 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
Failure to know when to stop, Cohen continued, “It is true. You cannot rape your spouse. And there’s very clear case law.” Unfortunately in a pure legal sense Cohen articulates a law that was on the books in most of the United States, yet many have moved to strike it from their records and have amended the law. That whole legalese around marriage and a woman’s relationship to her husband has changed. It is a part of the same dialog that refers to women and children as the property of the husband or father. We have come a long way from that ‘way of thinking’ as presented in the law but as we can see clearly in the minds of (some) men much hasn’t changed. This reality is not new to Black people. We know all about the law stating one thing and the actions of people being another. Case in point, yes America voted in its first Black President however he has been the most disrespected by the U.S. Congress, media and in some cases foreign leadership, the most recent being Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel. You can say what you will about President Obama. You may not agree with all that he does or say but one thing that we can all agree on, is that he has in all situations been Presidential. With the introduction of Ivana Trump’s assertion of “rape” in a deposition—part of the early ’90s divorce case between the Trumps, also revealed in the 1993 book Lost Tycoon: The Many Lives of Donald J. An excerpt from the book Lost Tycoon, describes at best a disturbing scene. After a painful scalp reduction surgery to remove a bald spot, Donald Trump confronted his then-wife, who had previously used the same plastic surgeon. “Your fucking doctor has ruined me!” Trump cried. What followed was a “violent assault,” according to Lost Tycoon. “Donald held back Ivana’s arms and began to pull out fistfuls of hair from her scalp, as if to mirror the pain he felt from his own operation. He tore off her clothes and unzipped his pants.” “Then he jams his penis inside her for the first time in more than sixteen months. Ivana is terrified…it is a violent assault,” Hurt writes. “According to versions she repeats to some of her closest confidantes, ‘he raped me.’” Following the incident, Ivana ran upstairs, hid behind a locked door, and remained there “crying for the rest of night.” When she returned to the master bedroom in the morning, he was there. “As she looks in horror at the ripped-out hair scattered all over the bed, he glares at her and asks with menacing casualness: ‘Does it hurt?’” Hurt writes. Donald Trump has previously denied the allegation. In the book, he denies having had the scalp reduction surgery. “It’s obviously false,” Donald Trump said of the accusation in 1993, according to Newsday. “It’s incorrect and done by a guy without much talent (Texas Monthly and Newsweek reporter Harry Hurt III). He is a guy that is an unattractive guy who is a vindictive and jealous person.” As for Cohen, he acknowledged that he has not read the entire deposition but said he had read the two relevant pages of it, including the rape accusation. “It’s not the word that you’re trying to make it into,” Cohen told The Daily Beast, saying Ivana Trump was talking about how “she felt raped emotionally…She was not referring to it [as] a criminal matter, and not in its literal sense, though there’s many literal senses to the word.” So much for crisis management. It looks like Mr. Trump is in need of Olivia Pope to manage his reputation.

Ending Mass Incarceration: The Ongoing Call to Faith Communities By Pastor Lilian Amaya, Janis Rosheuvel and Lissette Castillo Vizcarra The crisis of incarceration this nation now faces demands people of faith act with swift and fierce moral authority to transform, not just reform, an irreparably broken system. It demands that all of us—clergy, seminarians, teachers, and people in pews, mosques and temples— provoke a revolution of values that strikes at the heart of mass incarceration. Without exception, we believers are required to realize a just world. This is our call, and we are falling short when it comes to how we treat those in jails, prisons and detention centers. Thanks to powerful community organizing and mobilization many more people are cognizant of why mass incarceration must end. 2.3 million human beings locked down, as many as 9 million under some form of correctional control, including parole, probation or awaiting their day in court and almost 500,000 people passing through civil immigration detention annually. Growing numbers of us—particularly if we are poor, female, Black, Brown, immigrant, and or have mental health conditions—are facing incarceration or have loved ones who are. We know that the U.S. incarcerates more people per capita than any other nation on earth, approximately 700 persons per every 100,000. And we know that the racially biased “War on Drugs” has in the past 40 years incarcerated hundreds of millions of people for largely nonviolent drug offenses, tearing families asunder in the process. Despite public perceptions, poor people of color are not more likely to use or sell drugs than their white counterparts. So what explains the disproportionate ways we are locked up? To begin with, we are seeing the devastating results of the “tough on crime” rhetoric of the past four decades. Public policies like “stop-and-frisk,” “broken windows” promote over policing of minor offenses, which are the gateway to incarceration. Even as we write this piece, the nation is watching the unfolding of yet another case in which a young Black woman, Sandra Bland of Chicago, who ends up arrested, assaulted and dead in a jail cell after being stopped by a policeman in Texas for changing lanes without signaling while driving home from a job interview. “Zero tolerance” policing, the mass detention and deportation of millions of immigrants and a congressional bed quota mandate that requires immigrant detention centers to hold 34,000 people in the system each night, have all created a pipeline that forces targeted communities into a system not about rehabilitation, reconciliation and restitution, but about the social control of Black and Brown bodies. Indeed, the same companies that profit from the criminalization and mass incarceration of Black and Brown people, Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) and GEO Group, are reaping record profits at the expense of these chronically dehumanized and marginalized communities. In 2014 alone, these two corporations made nearly $470 million in revenue. The historic and pervasive criminalization of communities of color in the United States is a key building block of the current system of mass incarceration. As author and scholar Michelle Alexander deftly lays out in her seminal work The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, mass incarceration is largely about continuing to ensure the nation has a permanent, subservient and disenfranchised underclass whose very bodies and movement are caged and controlled. As Alexander has said, “Once you are labeled a felon you’re trapped for the rest of your life and subject to many of the old forms of discrimination in job applications, rental agreements, loan applications, school applications…Those labeled felons are even denied the right to vote.” Faith communities have been doing good work to resist mass incarceration: sponsoring conferences, reading, writing, visiting those in prison and more. Grant Park Music Festival Presents Hollywood Bowl Conductor Thomas Wilkins By Kayenne Eames Defender Contributing Writer The 81st annual Grant Park Music Festival continues this evening July 29 with guest conductor Thomas Wilkins – music director of the Omaha Symphony and principal guest conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra – leading the Grant Park Orchestra. The program includes Jerry Goldsmith’s eight-minute Fireworks, Dvorák’s beautiful, large-scale “Symphony No. 6,” and “The Sunday Symphony” by William Grant Still. Chicago pulls out all stops with special little unexpected moments. At 5:30 pm this evening in Millennium Park’s Family Fun Tent located just west of the Jay Pritzker Pavilion one hour before the concert, CSO’s Sounds and Stories contributor Laura Sauer hosts a free Club 615 pre-concert lecture with Mr. Wilkins. Wednesday night’s concert will also be broadcast live on 98.7WFMT, Chicago’s classical and fine arts radio station, and also online at wfmt.com/streaming. Last season Mr. Wilkins returned to the National Symphony Orchestra for a two-week festival of American music and dance, as well as a collaboration with world renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma at Wolf Trap, the NSO’s summer home. William Grant Still, was named called “The Dean of Afro-American Composers,” by Nicolas Slonimsky in his authoritative Baker’s Biographical Dictionary of Musicians. Born in Woodville, Mississippi on May 11, 1895 Sill’s father had been the town bandmaster and a music teacher at Alabama A&M. However he died when his son was an infant. The family moved to Little Rock, Arkansas, where his mother, a graduate of Atlanta University, taught high school. There she married an opera buff and he introduced young William to the great voices of the day and encouraged his interest in playing the violin. At the age of 16, Still matriculated as a medical student at Wilberforce University in Ohio, but that didn’t last long. The music in his DNA led him to music. He taught himself to play the reed instruments and left school to perform in dance bands in the Columbus area and work for a brief period as an arranger for the great blues writer W.C. Handy. Still graduated in 1915 from Wilberforce, married later that year, and then resumed playing in dance and theater or-

chestras. Later he entered Oberlin College in 1917, but left in 1918 to serve in the Navy during World War I, first as a mess attendant and later as a violinist in officers’ clubs. He returned to Oberlin after his service duty and remained until 1921, when he moved to New York to join the orchestra of the Noble Sissle–Eubie Blake revue Shuffle Along as an oboist. While on tour in Boston with the show, Still studied with George Chadwick, then President of the New England Conservatory, who was so impressed with his talent that he provided his lessons free of charge. Back in New York, Still studied with Edgard Varèse and ran the Black Swan Recording Company for a period in the mid-1920s. He tried composing in Varèse’s modernistic idiom, but soon abandoned that dissonant style in favor of a more traditional manner. Still’s work was recognized as early as 1928, when he received the Harmon Award for the most significant contribution to Black culture in America. His Afro-American Symphony of 1930 was premiered by Howard Hanson and the Rochester Philharmonic (the first such work by a Black composer played by a leading American orchestra) and heard thereafter in performances in Europe and South America. Unable to make a living from his concert compositions, however, Still worked as an arranger and orchestrator of music for radio, for Broadway shows, and for Paul Whiteman, Artie Shaw and other popular band leaders. A 1934 Guggenheim Fellowship allowed him to cut back on his commercial activities and write his first opera, “Blue Steel,” which incorporated jazz and spirituals. He continued to compose large-scale orchestral, instrumental and vocal works in his distinctive idiom during the following years, and after moving to Los Angeles in 1934, he supplemented that activity by arranging music for films (including Frank Capra’s 1937 Lost Horizon) and later for television (Perry Mason, Gunsmoke). Still continued to hold an important place in American music until his death in Los Angeles in 1978. Still received many awards for his work: seven honorary degrees; commissions from CBS, New York World’s Fair, League of Composers, Cleveland Orchestra and other important cultural organizations; the Phi Beta Sigma Award and a citation from ASCAP noting his “extraordinary contributions” to music and his “greatness, both as an artist and as a human being.” and the Freedom Foundation Award. Dr. Mahalia Hines: Not the Common Mom By Mary L. Datcher Defender Writer Behind every great child, there is a strong adult in their life that has influenced their development. The role switches as we grow from being the one to admire that adult figure to becoming the one that is admired. No one understands the impact of that role better than Dr. Mahalia Hines. A former teacher and principal who taught in the Chicago Public School system for over 35 years, her experience is deep, and her knowledge is priceless. As a current member of the Chicago Board of Education, she has seen many challenges over the last four years. But through the storm, there have been a great deal of pots of gold at the end of the rainbow. One of her proudest accomplishments is being the proud mother of recording artist and actor, Lonnie “Rashid” Lynn – better know to the public as Common. Born in South Haven, Michigan as a child, after moving around, Hines relocated from D.C. with her family at the age of 8 years old to Chicago. She’s always considered Chicago to be her home. She earned her college degree, majoring in Marketing with a minor in English. Her dream was to work in the advertising and marketing business, but in the 1960’s, there were very few women of color in the male-dominated field. One day she was approached to fill in as a substitute teacher at Cooper Elementary on the West Side of Chicago. “I’ll never forget. It was on the West Side – mostly Hispanic students in the kindergarten class,” she recalls. “There were only two students that spoke English and I didn’t speak any Spanish. That’s just how bad we needed teachers back then. I realized that I loved teaching. My other minor was English, so I ended up asking for a transfer and ended up at Stagg Elementary School. It was brand new at the time. That was my real first teaching experience.” In those years, the public school system began to change as Brown vs. Board of Education ruling had set the decree for most major cities to integrate the schools with both Black students and teachers in predominately white public schools. “They transferred of us into schools where there weren’t many African-American teachers,” she said. “Because I had a minor in English, I ended up at Morgan Park www.chicagodefender.com

It’s really ironic because one of the people who went into it with me was Charles Alexander. He ended up being the principal there years later. That was my first experience with racism. I had been down South but I had never experience it until I began to teach at Morgan Park High School.” Transitioning from teaching to becoming a principal, Hines thinks the system has changed a great deal since her start since the late 1960’s. “That was the era of ‘Black Pride,’” she said. “We felt so committed to the kids in the Black schools. I often say, I know we were making major difference. Then I looked up and they split us. I don’t know if it was for the good or intentionally to take us out of those schools. I still think back then, it was much better. I think it was better, because it was much more respect for teachers at that time and for education.” During this time, she noticed that her son had become a very prolific writer in school but had no idea about rap music. She has always taught him the importance of edu-
cation and reading, and as a child television was mostly watched on the weekends. As he signed with Relativity Records, and moved on to MCA eventually arrived at the Universal Music Group system, Common’s stardom continued to rise. It was important to give back to his community, so they formed the Common Ground Foundation. She explained, “He said he wanted to have a foundation to really start to give back. It wasn’t really thought out at that time. We knew that we wanted to give back to kids. At the time, we didn’t have a lot of financial support, but we had people that would help. We started out small doing workshops in schools and things, using some of the people that could do them. I don’t think we had vision for it, we just knew we wanted to help.” Since it’s inception over 15 years ago, Common Ground Foundation has raised over hundreds of thousands of dollars to assist organizations in the Chicago area. In the last five years, they have taken a handson approach to working closely with students. “One year, the Kanye West Foun-
dation awarded kids for good attendance. He asked me if I could attend and come out. I went to the Chicago Theatre and I remembered seeing all of the kids coming in and how excited they were [and] how excited I felt just being around them,” Hines said. “I went back to Rashid and said, ‘I got it. We don’t know the kids. This is what we need to do – we need to focus on a small group.’” “Because of my educational background, I want to take kids out of 8th grade and keep them all the way into their junior year of high school. We partnered with organizations like Chicago Scholars Foundation and the Chicago Urban League,” she explained. Soon after, they decided to mentor high school students until they went to college. Mentoring principals has been a priority since her days as one. Over the years, she noticed that the culture has changed where educators had become fearful of sharing ideas and new techniques. She decided to share her concern with then mayoral candidate, Rahm Emanuel who was running in his first term in the Chicago mayoral election in 2010. Through mutual acquaintances, a meeting was arranged to share her
ideas with the soon-to-be mayor. “I wanted to be on the educational transitional team so maybe I can share some of the things that I know and let them know what’s going on,” she said. “For some reason, I thought that Rahm would be the one. I knew that I could at least get a meeting with him.” With the help of friends in the educational system, she put together a curriculum program that invited 3,000 high school students from both the West and South sides to discuss ideas on education empowerment in both the federal and local government at the UIC Forum. A few months after Mayor Emanuel was elected, he appointed her to the Chicago Board of Education in May of 2011. Still wearing her hat as the CEO of Think Common, they decided to scale back on their annual gala style fundraiser to produce an event that would collaborate with other like-minded nonprofits. Last September, Aahh Music Festival headlined friends of Common that included fellow Chicago musical partner and friend, Kanye West. While Hines stepped back from the day-to-day operations, Tamara Brown, executive director of Common Ground Foundation stepped in to manage more responsibilities for the company. Dr. Hines said feels more comfortable in her role as mom, grand mom, wife and mentor. Being married for almost 36 years to her husband, Ralph Hines, they try to spend time in their Florida home in the winter months. Every summer she has looks forward to spending time with her granddaughter who will be attending Howard University in the fall. What was to be 18 months as a part of the Chicago Board of Education has turned into four years. In the midst of all the controversy and challenges, she will continue another term on the board, because her work is never done. The experience gives her insight on how to reach other educational instructors nationally and internationally. “I’ll continue my work with coaching principals,” she said. “I like working in the schools throughout the United States. I have somebody in Houston and the Delta region as well as someone in Brazil. That is the biggest way I can impact the greatest number of kids.”

Hoping to take advantage of the Black community’s increasing disillusionment with Democratic Governor Pat Quinn, Rauner enlisted the services of some high profile Black community leaders including Rev. James Meeks, Pastor Corey Brooks, N’Digo Publisher Hermene Hartman, and Dr. Willie Wilson to act as surrogates for his campaign. While Meeks, Brooks, Hartman
and Wilson were vilified in the Black community for supporting the Republican candidate, they remained loyal and when Rauner was elected to office, he rewarded that loyalty with key appointments. Rev. James Meeks Rev. James Meeks was once considered the heir apparent to the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s Operation P.U.$.H., but in recent years has focused on expanding his own power base. Meeks, the pastor of Salem Baptist Church, which is based in the arena-sized House of Hope in the far South Side’s Roseland community.

No stranger to politics, Meeks has been a vocal advocate for equitable education funding to the point of threatening to run in the 2008 Democratic Primary against former governor Rod Blagojevich. Blagojevich eventually agreed to provide an additional $1 billion dollars in funding for Illinois schools but was ousted from office before he could follow through on their agreement. Meeks ran and was elected to serve in the Illinois State Senate in 2002. Throughout his time in Springfield, he remained singularly focused on education funding, but became increasingly frustrated with the difficulty he encountered trying to increase education funding in Springfield, which was controlled completely by Democrats. Meeks eventually rose to Chairman of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus in 2008. In 2013, Meeks resigned from the Illinois State Senate, disillusioned with the lack of progress on his mission. Fast forward to 2013 and Bruce Rauner enters the race and one of his major goals is increased education funding, Meeks number one goal. The two met and after some discussion, Meeks agreed to join the Rauner campaign. Throughout the campaign—Meeks’ remained a steadfast supporter of Rauner because of his promise on education funding, even as large portions of the community branded him a “sellout,” sure that Rauner would cast him aside if he were to win the election. Rauner won the election, appointed Meeks to his transition team, and eventually appointed Meeks to become the Chairman of the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). Meeks’ critics claim that the appointment was political payback for selling out the community. For Meeks, serving as the Chairman of the ISBE, which administers billions in school grants, allowed him to have a direct say in the education process. Meeks believes education is the top determining factor in a child’s longterm success, and as Chairman of ISBE he will direct how those funds are spent. While many Blacks remain skeptical, only time will tell if Meeks’ sacrifice will have a positive impact on the outcomes for Black youth. Pastor Corey Brooks Indiana native, Pastor Corey Brooks first made news when he decided to camp out on the rooftop of his church until he raised enough funds to build a community center for his church. He successfully raised the funds with donations from notables such as Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry. Brooks followed that
exploit up with a walk across the country against urban violence. He also launched the Project H.O.O.D. initiative in the Woodlawn and Englewood communities. Operating a church in one of Chicago’s toughest neighborhoods, many Blacks may question his intentions, but few question his authenticity. An Indiana native, Brooks was already familiar with the Republican Party and had been known to court conservative leaning politicians not traditionally welcomed in the Black community. All of Brooks’ initiatives garnered national media attention, making him a household regular in Black and White communities, and a likely target of support for Rauner in the Black community. Like Meeks, Brooks looked at the state of the Black community and realized Springfield was completely controlled by Democrats. Things didn’t seem to be getting better, so he too decided to break from the ranks and openly support Rauner. He too was ridiculed, criticized, and called a sellout by many in the Black community. Used to being stung by Democratic politicians regularly, Black people talked openly about Rauner ditching Brooks after the election. Also like Meeks, Rauner appointed Brooks to his transition committee after he was elected. Raunerconsults with Brooks regularly when making decisions that impact the Black community. Just recently, Rauner appointed Brooks to the Illinois Tollway Board. While Brooks will only collect an annual salary of $31,426, the Illinois Tollway annual budget is in excess of $1 billion dollars and is one of the state of Illinois’ largest economic engines. As one of Illinois’ largest economic engines, Black participation at the Tollway remains at minimal at best. Brooks’ detractors doubt the impact he can have as only one of a nine-member board. Consider however, that Brooks, who is also a lawyer, has already proven that he knows how to cut the deals to get to the table with conservative Whites. They key will be if Brooks can translate that Board appointment into Black economic op-
portunity and development. Hermene Hartman Once a dominant force in the Chicago political, social, business scene, N’Digo founder and publisher Hermene Hartman had found herself struggling for relevance before she signed on with the Rauner campaign. While Hartman still operated her publication, it was but a mere shadow of what it had been in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. But with an email list and a recognizable masthead, Hartman made herself one of Rauner’s most vocal advocates and one of Pat Quinn and the Democratic Party’s harshest critics. Unlike Brooks and Meeks, Hartman served as a paid campaign consultant for Rauner during the campaign, working to connect Rauner with various community organizations and influencers. While Rauner spent millions on campaign consultants, Hartman was ridiculed for only receiving $55,000 for her services. Hartman was in a precarious position post election, because her services were paid for, Rauner had no post election obligations to Hartman. In fact, until Hartman published a scathing electronic editorial five months after Rauner’s election, the governor had not contacted her for anything. After the editorial, Rauner appointed Hartman to the $46,960/year Human Relations Committee, where she will have a say in settling employee discrimination complaints in Illinois. While the position is rather innocuous, Hartman fight workplace discrimination. Rev Willie Wilson Rev. Willie Wilson is the plainspoken South Side businessman, preacher, TV host, philanthropist, and donor that used his influence among local ministers to become one of Rauner’s biggest supporters. Unlike the aforementioned Black Rauner supporters, Wilson’s interest in Rauner’s election was business. Sources say that Wilson, who owns a business supply company, is positioned to take over the concessions at the Illinois Department of Corrections. Continued on page 12

Those contracts can potentially lead to additional jobs, business opportunities, and higher quality meals for prisoners if Wilson is genuinely concerned about the Black economic development. That remains to be seen, because Wilson has gone from supporting Rauner, to an unsuccessful mayoral run, to a recently announced Presidential campaign, potentially squandering any political capital he may have earned if he shows poorly. Payback is a political fact of life. Meeks, Brooks, Hartman, and Wilson have all been paid back based on what they did to get the Governor elected. It remains to be seen if they can translate their personal payback into benefits for the Black community as a whole.

By Donna Pierce Defender Contributing Writer If you’re familiar with the “scientific approach” popularized by Fannie Farmer, the Boston cooking teacher who published her first cookbook 119 years ago in 1896, you’ll understand why my grandmother had no use for those namesake cookbooks written by the incredibly popular cooking teacher who is credited for revolutionizing American cooking. Was that a good thing? When comparing cooking styles from my grandmother and Farmer—who Anthony Di Renzo described as a “wasp” in his book “Bitter Greens: Essays on Food, Politics and Ethnicity from the Imperial Kitchen”—it didn’t take me long to fully appreciate my grandmother’s casual ingredient measurements as representative of a much more sophisticated and sensual approach to passing down delicious recipes based on seasons and ingredients. Instead of following Farmer’s strict measurement instructions, my grandmother’s recipes are full of dashes leaving amounts up the circumstances—consider the season, occasion and budget—for which each dish is being prepared. “These recipe amounts are guidelines to help build your confidence,” granny used to say. “After that, I expect you to change things around based on a dozen variables…especially the season.” Although Granny usually added a pinch of sugar to her post-summer chicken salad recipes as a balance for celery, onions and green peppers no longer at their peak, her Summer Chicken Salad is a triumph of simplicity intended to be served over thick garden vine-ripened tomato slices oozing with flavor. By Elan Edwards Defender Contributing Writer Today’s atmosphere between the retailor and the consumer is one of distrust. Long one are the days when trust in a product went a long way. The patients trust in their doctor is equally challenged for many reasons. Black folks have more reason to distrust much of what goes on in America as it pertains to them because of the unequal treatment in all areas of life. So whereas a blanket statement, “Consumers have become deeply distrustful of their food,” may be true, it takes on an entirely different reality as it pertains to the particulars associated with being Black. There’s Sheila Donaldson, who had her “aha moment” when she read the label of the barbecue sauce she was feeding her 1-year-old. “I was alarmed to see that the No. 1 ingredient was high-fructose corn syrup,” says Donaldson, 30, who lives on the south side. “I had no idea that barbecue sauce had fructose and not sugar. That food was made up of not-real ingredients.” Donaldson started scrutinizing food labels once she was diagnosed as a diabetic. She deeply researched each food ingredient she’d never heard of, began shopping more carefully, and started cooking more meals at home. She even began advocating Healthy Attitudes Lifestyle club about food for her friends. “My approach, is count chemicals, not calories,” she says. More consumers like Donaldson have begun to avoid foods with unfamiliar or worrisome ingredients on food labels. A survey last year by the Nutrition Business Journal found that high-fructose corn syrup tops consumers’ least-wanted list. No. 2 was partially hydrogenated oils or “trans fats.” Truth is consumers don’t trust companies anymore, especially after the whole cigarette tobacco companies experience. People learned that the big corporations don’t care about them compared to their bottom line.
If the cost of paying off a lawsuit is less than the profit they will go for the lawsuit every time regardless of the impact it has on the consumer. Mintel recently surveyed grocery shoppers. Only 38 percent said they trust what companies say about their products on food labels. That leaves 62 percent who don’t. Food companies have noticed. The latest strategy to win back wary shoppers can be summed up in one word: simple. Pillsbury has a new line of Purely Simple baking mixes. Kroger has a Simple Truth line of store brand foods. Keebler has Simply Made cookies. Names of things that sound like they’d be used by chemists, rather than home cooks, are being whisked off the ingredient labels of processed foods -- which now account for 70 percent of the American diet. Ingredient lists are being made as short, easy to pronounce, and understand as possible. In the food industry, this is called “clean labeling.” And big companies are racing to do it. In recent weeks, Kraft said it would take artificial colors and preservatives out of its iconic mac & cheese. Nestle is chucking artificial colors and flavors out of its chocolates. General Mills will purge artificial colors and flavors from its cereals. This change of attitude is also visible in the fast foods industry. Many have taken to improve the food choices adding healthier foods to their menu. This is all because the American public has hit an all time crisis and is now trying to find its way back to healthy. Obesity, diabetes and hypertension have impacted about 78.8 of the American population. Doctors have demanded that patients take back the responsibility of their own health. The results are the switch in diets and exercise including how people shop for food. We have a long way to go but being an educator consumer goes a long way. So add reading your food labels to your list—it just may change your life and your family’s.
1 1/2 medium celery ribs, finely chopped, about 3/4 cup 1/2 each, small: green pepper, onion, trimmed, finely chopped 2 unchilled, vine-ripened tomatoes, trimmed, cored, cut into thick slices Place the mayonnaise to a small bowl; stir in olive oil, mustard, horseradish, salt and pepper; set aside. Place the chicken chunks in a large bowl; top with grated egg, celery, green pepper and onion. Stir in the mayonnaise mixture, stirring lightly to coat but not mash the salad. To serve chilled or at room temperature, use a spoon or scoop to top thick tomato slices with chicken salad. Makes about four servings. Skinny Soul Tip: make this for guests without losing any flavor by replacing half of the mayonnaise with zero-fat Greek yogurt.
