On a hunger strike for 30-days, 15 determined community activists have vowed to do whatever it takes to save Walter H. Dyett High School. They blame the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) of allegedly deliberately destabilizing, disinvesting and disenfranchising African American and Latino schools especially.

Hunger strikers, won’t apologize for rushing the stage during Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s recently held budget hearing that caused his security to rush him out of the building. While some felt they were disrespectful, hunger striker Jitu Brown says, “Nobody is criticizing the sabotaging of Dyett High School or the thousands of voices of Bronzeville who were ignored.” They are tired of the mayor ignoring their demands and have pushed the envelope to get his attention including chaining themselves outside of his fifth-floor City Hall office. A familiar with the handwriting on the wall; that is, school closings in black and brown communities, turnarounds, replacements with privately-run charter schools with selective admissions and phase-out programs, the Dyett 15 have good reasons for fighting back and they have the community’s support. Brown said these so-called reform programs result in the firing of seasoned mostly black teachers and staff who are replaced with young, white teachers who are paid less but lack educational experience. He said these school schemes disrupt, destabilize and disenfranchise students and the community and that the disinvestment in Dyett is crystal clear.

Strangely, in that same year, CPS invested $24 million to convert King high School into a selective enrollment magnet school. “Dyett has 25.6 percent special needs students, but has not received adequate resources to serve them.” Painting a picture of disinvestment to Dyett even more clearly, Brown said back in 2008,

In 2011, they watched as CPS cut, closed and transformed Dyett and feeder schools alike, cutting the Advancement Via Individual Determination program from Dyett which prepared students for college and the workplace. CPS cut the schools Advance Placement (AP) classes as well as eliminated the LOVE/Young Men of Dyett programs which mentored both male and female students. Trouble and the obvious disinvestment in Dyett began in 1999 when CPS converted the school from middle to high school but failed to provide any school resources. The coalition said on opening day Dyett had seven books in its library and “unequipped science labs; yet the school was expected to meet district performance standards.”

Jitu Brown , the spokesperson for the Dyett hungerstrikers. Dyett had the largest number of students going to college. “We had a nationally recognized Restorative Justice and Education to Success program that helped to double graduation rates and raise college attendance by 41 percent. CPS refused to fund this program and also cut Dyett’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) college preparatory program. CPS also cut Dyett’s truancy prevention program whichthe coalition says provided mentoring including a Saturday school that included an effective reading program. CPS also cut a counselor and an assistant principal.

The coalition says CPS has closed, turned around or converted to charter or selective enrollment, 20 schools near Dyett, and between 2005 and 2010, four high schools near Dyett were closed. Pointing a finger at CPS, Brown said this further destabilized a community already under attack with the razing of public housing coupled with gentrification. Brown and fellow Hunger Striker and Community Activist Cathy Dale said they are tired of the student shuffle that sometimes places children miles away from home in harm’s way and into the crossfire of gang turf wars. Kurt A. Summers, Jr., City Treasurer: “Pragmatic Problem Solver” ROBERT T. STARKS Defender Political Editor Mr. Kurt A. Summers, Jr., Chicago’s City Treasurer, is a consummate professional and is well suited for the job of City Treasurer. He is a graduate of Whitney Young High School, holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Washington University in St. Louis, and he holds a MBA from the Harvard School of Business. In the 16 years since finishing Harvard Summers has worked in investment banking, corporate leadership and public service. He began his career at McKinsey & Company, he has been an investment banker at Goldman Sachs & Company, served as a Principal at Tidal Capital Partners, Chief Financial Officer, Head of Business Development at Balton Corporation, and as Management Director at Ryan Specialty Group, LLC. When he served a Senior Vice President of Grosvenor Capital Management he was a member of the Office of the Chairman, where he
led the Emerging and Diverse Manager business group that invested over $2 billion in minority and women owned businesses. His experience in public and government includes his service as Aide to the Chief of Staff for the Governor of Illinois. Prior to being appointed to the office of City Treasurer, he served as Chief of Staff to Cook County Board President Toni Prekwinkle. He also served as Chief of Staff for Chicago’s 2016 Summer Olympic Games bid. Lastly, he has served on the board of Navy Pier and cochair of the Friends of Lucas Museum. Thus, when asked what led him to leave the corporate world to enter public and government service. He answered, “I grew up in Bronzeville, a neighborhood that has suffered from disinvestment for years. Also in that neighborhood was Sam Patch, my grandfather, who was a close confidante to Mayor Washington. The Mayor was like an uncle to me. He and my grandfather taught me that no matter how successful you are, how much money you make, you have an obligation to use your talents to benefit your community. I’ve had some great opportunities in my career to be of service, from being Toni Preckwinkle’s Chief of Staff to being the Chief of Staff for the 2016 Summer Olympics. There’s been no greater calling to serve than this! It’s true that my wife and I made a

tremendous financial sacrifice, but if there is ever a time when it’s needed it’s now! I‘ve known since I was 16 years old that I wanted to build my craft, my expertise in finance, and use that to find ways to help my community”. Given the rigors and criticism of being in public office, how does he cope with these pressures? “Those are the challenges that make the goal of transforming how we invest in our Chicago, and I’ve made it a priority to be transparent and held accountable to the people of Chicago who hired me for this role”, says Mr. Summers. What about the Mayor’s Budget Proposal and the $500 million property tax increase? “Just like our City Council members who will be asked to vote on the budget, I’m waiting to see how this is all presented at the end of this month. There are many options on the table, and the Mayor has indicated that he is willing to entertain any of them”, he insisted. Further, he says “In my office, we’ve identified tens of millions of dollars of additional revenue for next year’s budget, we’ve gotten seven of the local pension plans to agree to a fee-savings initiative which can save Chicago taxpayers $25-$50 million a year and $1-$2 billion in pension savings over the lifetime of the plans. We all have to do our part and leverage our expertise to help solve this fiscal challenge”.
Some wonder if Mr. Summers and the Mayor are a good match for the task of confronting the city’s finance. He quickly retorts, “While it is my belief that we’re all in this together, each of us have a part to play in chipping away at the City’s financial constraints. In the Treasurer’s Office, we are focused on generating more revenue to help out budget crisis and maintain sorely needed resources for public services. I spent my entire career studying and working in finance and I believe that my experience and training can be of service to the residents”. “The city is in need of $750 million to close a budget hole, including what’s needed to cover payments to the police and fire pension funds. This is a very real and urgent situation and we will have a better idea of what’s to come after the budget presentation less than two weeks from now”, says Mr. Summers. When asked about rumors that he will be a future candidate for mayor, he refused to address the mayoral candidacy and answered, “Being your Treasurer during a critical time in our City’s history and being able to put my entire life’s work and experience to use when it’s most needed is a dream opportunity to give back to the city that’s given me everything. This is 100% of my focus and this is absolutely the best job I’ve ever had”.

tice as the make believe crime investigators express on television. It moved me to tears to think that still another Black male child has been murdered and that his case may go unsolved or worse presumed not important.
E NOTES By Kai EL’Zabar
Defender Executive Editor
Baby Doe When I heard the news about the decomposed body parts of a child most likely African American estimated between the ages of 2 and 3 years old found in the Westside’s Garfield Park lagoon. The medical examiner’s office reported that the badly decomposed state of the hands, feet, head and more will require more time to know exactly how the child died. Like you I felt pained, angry and outraged— all emotions that converged upon me attacking my senses and there was no relief. I mean where do we begin? The questions flooded my senses and I became numb. Immediately I wanted to know why no one had come forth to report a missing child. Did the child not have a mother? It’s possible the mother is the victim of foul play as well, were they part of a ‘human trafficking crime? Maybe they were homeless and never on the radar. So many questions flowed through my mind imagining the actual horror that led to the child’s untimely death. Of course I have watched the numerous television crime stories like CSI, Criminal Minds and Law and Order, each of which provide an accounting of how the police go about solving cases such as this. I wondered if any of the steps or procedures that the television crime series follow would be done. I wondered whether or not there were investigators that would demonstrate the sort of commitment and compassion for the deceased child and seek jus-
Unfortunately, often and particularly during this depression, city police departments do not have the endowed budget that would allow them the luxury to investigate on the level witnessed on television. Most of the time even if it did, cases like this are relegated to the unsolved crimes file unless families of the victim push the matter or someone of power and influence gets involved. So what can we hope for? If it’s considered the crime of a serial killer, and or other victims are discovered it may garner more importance otherwise it may well remain an unsolved crime. The Westside community has decried the poorly lit Garfield Park as a dangerous place even though it’s considered a family park. Residents have spoken out about what they’ve witnessed transpiring there as well as what they have found on the ground. One resident complained of discarded condoms that litter the park as no place that children should play. Another mentioned needles that could belong to drug addicts. Still another talked about how poorly lit the park is at night and that she had seen scandalous dressed women hanging in the park and men coming and going. So it’s been established that some seedy activities go on there. That needs to be corrected. To date very little more than what we learned the very day of discovery has changed. Potential leads have been ruled out. The cause and manner of death are pending, the results of additional tests are unclear and it remains an ongoing police investigation. Officers were first called to the lagoon around 4:40 p.m. on the Saturday when someone called 911 to report they saw something strange floating in the water, Chicago Police spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said. The strange object in the water turned out to be a toddler’s left foot,

according to police. Upon further investigation, officers found the right foot and a hand about 25 yards away. Later Sunday, they recovered the child’s head. According to the police report a 20-pound weight was also found near the body parts. Police are still investigating whether the weight is connected to the discovery of the remains or if it was simply dumped in the same area. It hasn’t been revealed how the child was dismembered or what kind of weapon or tool was used to cut the body into parts. This knowledge oftentimes leads to clues about what kind of person committed the crime. The point is we haven’t moved very far from point A. And it’s a very real possibility that we may not get to point Z. I am saddened by the loss of this child. I am angered that no one has come forth to report a missing child . . . anywhere in these United States. What kind of world are we living in that a child goes missing long enough that the body is so decomposed that it is virtually unidentifiable? Where is the child’s mother? How did this happen in our community? This
makes me wonder what’s happening to our village? Has it crumbled? What I do know is that we have much work to do, that we have to save the children, save the babies and embrace community more. We have to step up and actively participate more in our children’s lives, our lives and our communities. We need to know who lives next door and down the street too. We need to get back to every parent being an extended parent to all children in our community. Of course that means that every adult has to accept responsibility for the well being of the community in which they live. What happened to that sense of pride in the community? What has happened to our sense of connectedness? We better find out and correct it. Let’s begin to put in tplace the mechanisms and necessary components of what makes us humane; so that we can begin to thrive and flourish as a people who loves its community as extended family. We are after all kith and kin.

Dunkin Breaks with Madigan, Says Not “Enough…for Black People”
Maze Jackson
Defender Political Editor
Fifth District State Representative Kenneth “Ken” Dunkin seems to have no problem keeping his family commitments and travel schedule even if it comes into conflict with Illinois Speaker of the House Michael Madigan’s political power plays. Some might even infer that those “family commitments and travel schedule” include a broader family, the residents of his district, and in some cases the even larger Black community of Illinois. Born and raised in Chicago’s notorious Cabrini Green Housing Projects,

Dunkin has always been one to go against the grain. “Even as a kid, we called him ‘GQ’, because Ken was always trying to achieve a higher standard. Whether it was how he dressed or the way he carried himself, he always knew we could do better,” recounts childhood friend and fellow Phi Beta Sigma brother Cyril Nichols. Dunkin went on to graduate from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia and received his Masters from the University of Chicago. Dunkin ran the Robert Taylor Boys and Girls Club, before being elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 2002. While in Springfield, Dunkin established a reputation as a legislator who was willing to buck Madigan to cut a better deal for the constituents of his district. Dunkin even aligned himself with former Governor Rod Blagojevich when it made the most sense for his constituents. Because of his alliance with Blagojevich, Dunkin faced numerous Madigan backed challengers early in his career, soundly defeating all challengers. During the last remap, Madigan went as far as to map Dunkin out of his home base, but being the consummate campaigner, Dunkin adapted and was re-elected with little fuss. In 2009, when Madigan wanted to put his full power on display against his then political mortal enemy Governor Rod Blagojevich, “family commitments and travel schedule” kept Dunkin from being present to vote on the impeachment. Dunkin’s refusal to participate in the process was symbolic of Dunkin’s unwillingness to kick Blagojevich, who was wildly popular in the Black community in spite of his legal issues, while he was down. Since the House voted 114-1 to impeach Blagojevich, Dunkin’s absence was easily missed, but when Senate Bill 1229 failed, and Madigan said “If Mr. Dunkin wass here we would have had 71 votes” because of those same “family commitments and travel schedule,” it sent a ripple through Springfield. When Dunkin was quoted by ABC 7 reporter Charles Thomas as saying, “There was not enough in the bill for Black people!” that ripple became a shock wave. Dunkin sent a shockwave through Springfield, because for the first time, he dared to interject the interests of the Black community into the political death
match between Republican Governor Bruce Rauner and Democrats led by Speaker Madigan. Because the Governor has veto power, the Senate has a bulletproof super majority, and the House has a super majority, the state budget impasse has reached gridlock. Dunkin’s break from Madigan over Black issues could become the game changer for either side, up to this point, like him or not, only Rauner has been even willing to discuss the needs of the Black community specifically. Springfield Power Dynamics In the Illinois Senate, President John Cullerton listens closely to the advice and council of Assistant Majority Leader and Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Chairman Senator Kimberly A. Lightford. Additionally, the Senate Black Caucus has taken the lead in identifying areas of compromise, but are leery to trust Rauner, who they say has yet to back up his campaign promises. “We haven’t seen the business he was supposed to bring.” Lightford said, but she did indicate that there was room for compromise. “I can see some term limits if you think some people have been there too long and have a monopoly (on state government),” she continued in a veiled reference to the 40 year Speaker of the House. In the Illinois House the situation is a bit different. While the Illinois Speaker of the House is widely regarded as the most powerful man in Illinois, his position of strength relies on his ability to manage his members. In this situation, Madigan must be able to corral all 71 of his members to be able to override Rauner’s ability to veto, and any defection leaves Speaker Madigan in the weakest negotiating position of the three major players. Always the master strategist, in the past Madigan has typically been able to convince at least one Republican to vote with Democrats, but since Rauner entered the scene, he has commanded the loyalty of the House Republicans, led by Minority Leader Jim Durkin. While Cullerton has the strongest Democratic position, he and his Senate colleagues have taken a backseat to the “Madigan v. Rauner Show.” See DunkinBreaks with Madigan, Page 9 www.chicagodefender.com
POLITICS that they are not happy with Dunkin. They have refused to speak out publicly against the former Chairman of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus, but behind the scenes many are calling for the Speaker to “punish” Dunkin, but that would leave the Speaker in a precarious position. While the House Democrats have a supermajority, there is no room for error. If they lose one vote, the Governor’s vetoes stick, making the supermajority worthless unless they can increase it. As we saw this week after Dunkin’s no show, the power dynamic shifts pretty fast in Springfield if anyone, particularly anyone Black leaves the proverbial “plantation,” a notion thought unthinkable until Dunkin rebelled against Madigan publicly last week. That leaves the Speaker with a whole lot to think about, and based on his record in the Black community, that is not something he’s had to do for 40 years.
Dunkin Breaks with Madigan from Page 8 Equally in the background, is the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus, who until this point has also been overshadowed, even though they control the second largest Caucus in Springfield. Rauner has openly courted their support, and has been rumored to have offered the Black Caucus a menu of social service and economic concessions tailored to the Black community. The Black Caucus so far has rejected Rauner’s overtures because of his stance on basic “Democratic core values.” Meanwhile, Madigan has yet to even mention the issues that concern the Black community, with many suggesting that he is at the root of Blacks being excluded from equal participation in state contracts and the political decision making process. As a matter of fact, during Madigan’s 40-year tenure as Speaker, he has never had a Black person on his Senior Leadership Team. He has been able to count on the unquestioned support of the Black Caucus members, without ever having to confront his own record in the Black community… until Ken Dunkin missed that vote and audaciously mentioned, “Black People!” Senate Bill 1229 When Black State Representative Ken Dunkin missed the vote on Senate Bill 1229, he took on two of the most powerful forces in Springfield, Speaker Madigan and organized labor. The bill, which would have strengthened state employee labor union AFSCME’s negotiating power and proved Mike Madigan as the biggest boss in Springfield failed by 3 votes, and Madigan blamed it singularly on Dunkin’s absence, he inadvertently gave the Black community their strongest negotiating tool in almost two generations. Traditionally, state workers negotiate their contract with the Governor and the Executive Branch not the Legislative Branch, but because of the extreme anti-union position Bruce Rauner has taken against unions, AFSCME sought the assistance of the General Assembly to gain additional leverage. Because AFSCME needed to involve the Legislative Branch in the negotiations because things are not going so well, Dunkin saw it as the perfect opportunity for Black legislators to leverage concessions from the trade union that represents state workers including downstate prison guards. Dunkin admits he voted for the bill initially, but after Rauner vetoed the bill and he had more opportunity to ask questions, AFSCME representatives told him that www.chicagodefender.com
they “don’t typically share that information.” Dunkin admits he was incredulous at the fact that the union would not provide the information he requested, but still demanded his vote and unquestioned support. Dunkin knowing that he had previous commitments said, “he informed House leadership that he would be unavailable” the following week. House leadership scheduled the vote anyway, and added SB 570 to restore childcare subsidy levels; on the same day with the hopes of guaranteeing Black lawmakers would be present for the vote. When Dunkin followed through with family plans and travel schedule as he had previously communicated, the Speaker called SB 1229 in his absence. When the bill failed by 3 votes, Dunkin alone was vilified by the leader of the Democratic Caucus for the bill’s failure. Then knowing that he did not have the votes to pass the childcare bill, SB 570, the Speaker called it and it failed by one vote. Insiders speculated that Madigan called the bill knowing it would fail, so that it could be used against Dunkin in future campaigns. It is common practice in Springfield to leverage Black social service needs to secure votes on issues important to him. While SB 570 failed, Rep. Jehan Gordon made a motion to reconsider, which allowed SB 570 to be called again, a fact that has been lost in all of the rhetoric. While the Speaker and AFSCME continue to attack Dunkin, for being “disloyal,” they fail to mention that 40% of AFSCME’s downstate membership voted for Governor Rauner in the past election. They also fail to mention that they spent the better part of two years attacking Democratic governor Pat Quinn. They also fail to mention that their leadership threatened to “punish” Dunkin for not supporting their bill. In the Black community, the narrative has been all about the failure of SB 570, but the real battle was SB 1229, because it would have given Madigan and AFSCME the upper hand in their negotiations with Rauner. When Dunkin made the declaration, “I don’t work for Mike Madigan,” he dramatically shifted the power of the supermajority out of the hands of the all-powerful Madigan into the hands of a Black man. It’s a position that Blacks have not been in very often, and are very uncomfortable with. While most Illinois Legislative Black Caucus members have remained silent, it is clear from their response

Tyra Banks: Beauty, Brains and Business Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer The business of beauty is considered glamorous by the millions who dream of being a part of it but it can come with great sacrifice. As young girls, one of the first rituals enrolling us into our girlhood is the gift of the doll baby—the symbol of our future womanhood. Eventually, we upgrade to Barbie or ‘adult like’ dolls, which introduces to us a mature woman’s body shape. As an adolescent, this was often the first introduction to the perception of what defines beauty. Today, we are met with various platforms of media, which present us a spectrum of what defines beauty breaking down what was very narrow. Broadening the perception and scope of beauty is in part due to a young African American woman from Inglewood, California who fought through her own body perceptions to bring her story to millions of people. Tyra Banks is known to millions as a trailblazer in the modeling world and an innovator for many young people seeking the American dream. Becoming the first Black model to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated and GQ, the first woman of color to become a Victoria’s Secrets Angel and executive producer/ host of CW’s longest-running reality series America’s Next Top Model— a groundbreaking show that has led the way for all the modeling shows that have followed. Her talents are limitless garnering film credits, music projects, authoring books and hosting an Emmy-award winning daytime talk show, “The Tyra Banks Show” which ran for five years, ending in May 2010. With America’s Next Top Model currently being licensed in over 30 countries, Banks has decided to re-enter the daytime arena with a brand new show called the “Fab Life”. The “Fab Life” premiered Monday September 14 on ABC, featuring a solid co-star panel of familiar and fresh faces including Chrissy Teigen, Joe Zee, Lauren Makk and Leah Ashley. Banks told the Chicago Defender that it feels good about her latest venture, “The panel shows are doing well--”The Real” is doing well, “The Talk” ratings are climbing and even surpassing “The View,” she said. “I look at that as a student and I study them. What is everyone doing and what are they not doing? In Harvard business school we call that the ‘white space’, the space that is open. I feel that these ‘themed pillars’ that the “Fab Life” offers is not out on daytime television.” In between her time as executive producer and host of “America’s Next Top Model,” Banks decided that she needed 10 September 16-22, 2015 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
to polish her skills as a top-level executive. The invitation to participate in the Harvard Owner/President Management program, which is a three-week admissions based course that focuses on corporate growth, leadership expertise and financial success was timely. She said, “Everything that I’ve done with my business and career has been with my instinct and guts. I knew that I couldn’t continue with just gut. I hadn’t told the world why I was at Harvard but it was because I was starting a cosmetics company.” Unlike other celebrity endorsed beauty lines, Tyra longs to own and operate her new company creating an infrastructure. “For me ownership is super important. I want us to be very successful. If I have to get business partners to invest in the company then I will do that.” Although, what she learned in the Harvard O/PM program has rejuvenated her ability to look at how she approaches business differently, she continues to credit her mom for laying the foundation for her success. “My mom was my business manager and my partner. She helped me to strategize and helped me reserve my self-esteem when the agencies were telling me that my butt was too big, my boobs were too big or I was too fat for the runway. She was that person that said, ‘We need to talk about this Ty.’ I said, ‘Okay, I’m on a diet.’ She said, ‘No, we’re going to talk about it over some pizza.’” After recording their new plan on parchment paper in an Italian pizzeria, they returned to New York where they informed their agency to pursue clients that loved the opposite of ‘skinny’ images. Banks never looked back and has always become an advocate for various body shapes and sizes. Her pride and joy is the TZONE foundation, which she and her mom initially created as a camp. Since its inception, the foundation’s mission is to inspire and cultivate self-esteem in young women with her key pillars to success-- Elocution, presentation, entrepreneurship, health and wellness and financial literary. “I want to teach how to be business women, how to how to present and conduct themselves on job interviews.”
The foundation has partnered with the Lower East Side Girl’s Club sharing a 30,000 square feet space and has transitioned to an after-school program catering to New York students daily. “The girls also learn dance, yoga, cooking and bio labs. Organic gardening, computer retouching, radio station, band are also available – it’s a huge facility. There’s a Project Runway inspired room. You have to go through TZONE to experience all of the other stuff.” In her role as executive producer and ‘life stylist’ for “Fab Life” Banks say’s, “It’s a unique title,” but one that feels befitting without compartmentalizing her position. She explains, “You have to touch as many senses as you can in order to connect with the audience. I worked really closely with the stage designer. The theme song, is not a talk show jingle – it could be played on the radio.” With this new chapter in her life, Banks still maintains the grind of producing America’s Next Top Model in its 23rd season, preparing to build a cosmetics dynasty, mentoring young adults and becoming a personality that ABC Networks can ‘bank’ on. She doesn’t take anything for granted and allows herself to relax more. “My weekends are precious. I spend time with my boyfriend and his kids. I love to get a massage, go to the movies, hang out in the house and do absolutely nothing.” www.chicagodefender.com

Helping Eliminate Hunger while Supporting HBCU’s New Civic Partnership Highlights Growing Numbers of Food-Insecure Chicagoans By Collecting Food Sept 26 By A.L. Smith, Contributing Writer Special to the Chicago Defender There’s one thing that Larry Huggins, principal of Riteway-Huggins Construction, and one of three local business co-founders of the upcoming 18th Annual Chicago Football Classic (CFC), to be held on September 26th at Soldier Field, says he has learned about life: The more things change, the more they stay the same. Recently, he was overwhelmingly reminded first-hand of the recurring reality discussed in the Bible’s New Testament, specifically, “...the poor will always be among you...” “There has been a noticeable and abrupt rise in apparently homeless and hungry men, women and children in neighborhoods across the city, and I felt moved to help in some direct way and get the Chicago Football Classic (CFC) involved,” said Huggins. A man of decisive action, he conferred with his Chicago Football Classic (CFC) co-founders and partners - - business executives Tim and Everett Rand, to take an important stand against the rising tide of urban despair. Along the way, they established an exciting new community partnership to help reduce hunger with Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago, which will kick-off on Classic game day - - Saturday, September 26, 2015 with a massive, voluntary food drive. They reached out to Angel Gutierrez, Catholic Charities Senior Vice-President and a long-time CFC supporter, who in turn introduced them to Diane Nunley, an enthusiastic, dedicated and highly committed, service-oriented member of the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago family. “It was truly a blessing to learn of their active interest,” recounts Nunley. “Their timing was excellent. September is National Hunger Action Month, and we were looking for a unique way to make the larger Chicago community aware of the increasingly urgent food-related problems experienced by the least, left-out and overlooked in the greater metropolitan Chicago area. The Chicago Football Classic’s ‘Anti-Hunger Action Food Drive’ will prove very helpful.” Ms. Nunley serves as an Associate Vice-President in the agency’s Community Services & Outreach Division. She is also a registered dietician, based in the agency’s Englewood office at 62nd and Halsted, who every day sees growing numbers of people desperately in need of a good, nutritious meal, and food for their families. “We help people across the city and in Cook/Lake counties remain healthy and secure, while providing food and shelter.” www.chicagodefender.com

FRONT PAGE JUMP Dyett 15, from Page 2 Located in Washington Park, thanks to the Chicago Botanical Garden partnering with Dyett, there is an urban garden key to the Coalition’s demands for a green technology curriculum. The coalition watched as CPS peeled away supporting programs that were increasing the graduation rates and improving school attendance. “In 2011, we won the ESPN “Rise Up” Award. We beat out 400 other schools around the country and won a $4 million renovation to our athletic facilities. The next year they voted to phase the school out,” Browns said. “The gym has been renovated, but the students never got to use it.” Dale said, now the students have to take gym online. “How do you take gym online?” The Board of Education voted to phase out Dyett in 2012 citing poor performance and decided to send the students to Phillips High School even though Philips is reportedly doing no better than Dyett according to district performance measures. The Dyett 15 coalition is interested in the students and providing them with the best education—one that will prepare them for college and for a global career, not in the arts as the mayor has so deemed. “We were forced into this route,” Dale said referring to their hunger strike. “We’ve been
working on Dyett for five-years or more. We’ve done everything humanly possible to support our children and get the support they need but the board has consistently ignored us and taken services away from our schools.” Dale said when Mayor Emanuel closed 50 schools, they said, “Enough is enough.” To get what they want for their students, Brown said, “We had to starve ourselves, but just last week, the mayor and CPS/CEO Forrest Claypool held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Lincoln Park High School to announce a $21 million annex which the parents did not want.” Brown and Dale said this is a fight for self-determination, and they have remained united in their requests versus the mayor’s desire to have Dyett as an arts school with a technology hub something Brown and Dale said “thousands of Bronzeville residents do not want.” “We did everything above and beyond what parents are supposed to do and because there was no vision for our children from CPS, we created one,” said Brown. “Dyett Global Leadership and Green Technology High School is not just about one school,” he said. “We gave the district a K-12 system of education in Bronzeville with Dyett and seven feeder schools connected to the program with vertical curriculum alignment.”
Brown said students would have a curriculum that prepared them for a global leadership in green technology course of study. “We have letters of support from seven local school councils saying they wanted to be a part of this. “We had education experts from all over the country including the American Educational Research Association (AERA) headed by Jeannie Oakes who told Brown, “it was one of the best proposals for a school she has ever seen, and Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, said it was the best proposal she’s ever seen.” Said Brown. Brown said parents have attended the Board of Education “sham” meetings where they were given two-minutes to speak but they believe “the decisions were made behind closed doors.” Brown said they were particularly upset with some African American ministers who were aligned with the mayor and who allegedly paid protesters $25 each to oppose the Dyett parents. Brown said, “They then cashed in on the School Safe Passage Way contracts.” Brown said these ministers “had nothing to do with saving Dyett” and he resents their engaging in politics just to “feed at the trough of the mayor at the expense of the children.” Dale
added “All of these people have consistently sold out our community. They supported the closing of our schools, and we are the ones who did the work….” With community consensus, the Dyett 15 said there was an overwhelming demand for a Dyett Global Leadership and Green Technology High School. “We are willing to negotiate with CPS, but we will not be excluded from a school we have fought for, suffered for and struggled to save,” the Dyett 15 said in a statement. Dale said their plan will provide “sustainable jobs.” Rather, they are committed to these demands: • A school with a global leadership curriculum. • A school with green technology in the name with green technology curriculum. • A school with vertical curricular alignment with the 6 feeder schools identified in the proposal. • Dyett as a community school (open until 7 p.m. daily, with programs and resources for parents, students and the community). • Dwayne Turner, a long-time CPS educator who lives in Bronzeville and former principal who respects community input, to serve as the principal of Dyett. • The school must retain the name Walter H. Dyett who was a violinist and CPS music educator, and • The Coalition to Revitalize Dyett must be fully represented with no fewer than six people on the design/planning team of the school. The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) issued a statement in favor of the then Dyett 12, now 15, saying, “We are in full solidarity with the activists’ decision to remain on a hunger strike. This community does not deserve watered-down compromise deals among the mayor’s political allies that CPS crafted in backrooms and without the participation of the very people who have successfully fought to re-open Dyett High School.”

ARTS & CULTURE
A Candid Conversation By Mary L. Datcher Senior Staff Writer Motown Records was considered the number one most influential company to lead in setting a precedent for talent, style, good music, swag and success The Detroit label was founded on the same business model of automotive companies that ruled the blue collar town during that time. Founder, Berry Gordy believed in building a company that scouted and signed raw talent, polished them and carried them through an assembly line of artist development that is sadly missing in today’s music business. Gladys Knight and the Pips were part of the ‘golden era’ of Motown Records. They contributed to its long illustrious line-up of catalog hits that included “Neither One of Us”, “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”, “If I Were Your Woman” among them. In 1976, the group left Motown and joined Buddah Records where they continued to create a string of classic hits like “Midnight Train to Georgia”. After much success Ms. Knight moved on to embark on a successful solo career with Columbia Records and MCA Records reuniting with the Pips in the 1980’s. The lead vocals on each song belonged to Gladys Knight and her smooth and timeless voice still rings strong today. Chicago Defender had an opportunity to engage the seven-time Grammy awarded artist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee in candid conversation while in town for a concert at Ravinia and to promote her latest single “Just A Little”. The independent release of her single is available on September 25th and produced by Grammy award producer, S1. She’s no stranger to overseeing her own music company but this time it’s with the help of her husband and manager. “I told my crew, please don’t sign me to another record label. You can give people chance, after chance, after chance but it hasn’t changed,” Knight said. “Why do you think there aren’t any record labels left? People got tired of not being paid while these mega companies are at the top with executives living in big houses, owning luxury cars and taking our money sending their kids to college. I have kids in college as well and I need my money.” 16 September 16-22, 2015 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
With her new company, comes new talent and she’s happy to bring on young and fresh ears to the camp. Rising singer and current vocal arranger, R&B singer Avehre has managed to capture Knight’s interest in becoming one of the premiere artists on her independent label. “Avehre is an amazing, talented and respectful young man. My husband has taken him under his wing. They are in the studio right now,” Knight said. “This man can write, produce and do his own thing.” As the business has changed over the years Knight has experienced challenges including the loss of her son James Newman who was also her manager, and her daughter and former manager who fell ill. She confesses that her spirituality and relationship with God has kept her going. As a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she’s noticed a cycle of social injustice that has continued to plague our community. Current day injustices have stirred past memories citing that the generational gap is not too different than when she was coming up in the Civil Rights movement. “We were determined more than we were angry so we marched. We came together as a people. We held up our heads. Not only were we fighting for justice, we were fighting for respect,” Knight said there’s a difference between her generation’s approach and the following generation. “You can’t demand respect if you’re not respectable. In our homes, when we try to teach our kids about being respectable – they get so much pressure from outside of the homes. They just got tired so they don’t want to hear it, ‘I’m mad now!’ Growing up, they need what we’ve received on the spiritual side in order to keep them grounded,” said Knight. “The concept of God was taken away from us and everything and everybody along the way. That’s the primary reason why we are where we are today. We’re too busy being politically correct.” Knight and her husband William McDowell of 15 years are happily married and reside in Canton North Carolina. There they recently purchased the schoolhouse, where McDowell attended elementary school. The building has been abandoned for a number of decades and they are seeking to transforming it into a state-of-art performing arts facility for new students. It’s a labor of love. She is looking forward to reaching out to her industry friends for assistance in bringing more opportunities to the community. As she wraps up, she recounts what makes Chicago so special every time she visits the Windy City, “It’s a team place. I’ve had friends here and I worked here all my young life. The theaters were something here. They were a learning place. It’s just a wonderful, aggressive place,” She said, “Being friends with the Staples, Jerry ‘Iceman’ Butler and other friends, I got to learn about the city and the clubs. That’s what I love about Chicago. I still get a good feeling when I come here.” www.chicagodefender.com

The Key is to Exercise Smarter Not Longer
©2015 Donna Battle Pierce
Donna Battle Pierce Defender Contributing Writer
By Karole Eglin Whatever your fitness I.Q. is there, is always room for improvement especially if professional insight can enlighten you change your game plane, which will lead you to success. We have compiled six actions to help fire up your metabolism so that you can lose weight faster – and even more effortlessly! 1. Exercise on an empty stomach When it comes to weight loss, fasted training – aka exercising on an empty stomach – is easily one of the most underutilized methods to burn body fat faster. 2. Stuff yourself with greens. So you’ve heard that eating greens like spinach and kale are good for you because they contain tons of healthy nutrition like B vitamins, calcium, iron, and lots of fiber to help you feel fuller longer. But here’s another reason why you should eat more greens– fucoxanthin—a special compound that’s found in chlorophyll bearing plants like spinach, kale and kelp and is known to help burn fat! Another great reason to load up on those green veggies! 3. Exercise smarter not longer. Fitness rule number one, work smarter, and not necessarily harder. Simply put: Studies show that that shorter, more intense HIIT workouts can help your body burn fat faster while also boosting your metabolism 24+ hours after exercise – which is something you won’t get from long duration, lower intensity exercise. Plus, for those who have tight schedules, HIIT can also prove to be more effective because these types of workouts are easier to schedule and commit to 4. Go for the coconut! True or false: Eating fat will make you fat? False! You should know that eating the right “fatty foods” like avocados and coconuts can actually help you lose weight! About coconuts: The coconut is considered a “weight loss food” because it contains a special type of fat called medium chain triglycerides (MCT’s). And the reason why MCT’s rock is because they help increase the metabolic efficiency and thus help our bodies become better fat burning machines – especially when burning belly fat! 5. Take a shot of apple cider vinegar. Ask any health nut about apple cider vinegar and you’re sure to get a laundry list of why apple cider vinegar rocks. And as far as weight loss, the reason why apple cider vinegar is so awesome is because it can help detox the body and suppress hunger. Try drinking a cup of diluted apple cider vinegar daily because it provides tons of health, weight loss, and beauty benefits. Too medicinal? Add pure honey, a pinch of cayenne and you’re ready to go. 6. Eat more protein. Like coconut oil, there are in fact certain foods and nutrients that help “boost” our metabolism. Case in point: protein! Problem is, when most people set out to lose weight, they don’t consume nearly enough protein in their diet and the end result is typically that they end up lowering their body’s full fat burning potential. Simply increase your intake of protein-rich foods like algae, tofu, meat, eggs, fish, nuts, beans, seeds, and even protein dominant veggies, which will help preserve and build precious calorie-burning muscle while also helping to keep your metabolism stoked. www.chicagodefender.com
Distinctly different grocery lists and menus were always mentioned along with the lifestyle changes my mom and dad were forced to make whenever we discussed their courageous move from Alabama’s Gulf Coast to Missouri in the 1950’s. “Our diets switched from rice and fresh seafood to meat and potatoes which was a big deal for two kids who had grown up daily enjoying some of the world’s best fish and shellfish at next to nothing prices” Mom always emphasized when post-migration menus came up. New generations of our family cooks growing up away from the Gulf Coast still treasure the gumbo, red beans and rice, shrimp Creole, oyster loaf and jambalayas passed down as a major part of our culinary heritage, but new recipes, such as these de-
licious salmon croquettes, have emerged as treasured family dishes, blending southern recipe techniques and delicious Creole and soul spice blends with northern ingredients. As one who spares no expense when it comes to purchasing fresh in-season wild Sockeye, King or Coho, salmon for other recipes, I always return to the remembered flavor and textures of inexpensive canned salmon as my first choice for Mom’s croquettes made with leftover mashed potatoes. Run your finger through the mixture (even boneless) to make sure it is free of bones and skin. Add the celery, green pepper and onion, mixing with a wooden spoon or your hands; add 1/2 cup of the cracker crumbs and about 1/2 cup of the mashed potatoes, , blending with your hands or a spoon. Set aside. Whisk together the egg, Creole seasoning and mustard. Mix in to the crab mixture with your hands or with wooden spoon. Form into 6 patties, about 3/4inch thick. (Add a little more mashed potatoes and a little cream if needed to form patties.) Place remaining 1/2 cup of cracker meal on a plate or sheet of wax paper. Dust both sides of patties/croquettes with crumbs. Place patties/croquettes on a lined baking sheet. Refrigerate 30 to 45 minutes. To cook, heat 1/2-inch of oil and the butter in a large cast iron skillet over medium heat. Add the patties (do not crowd); cook until medium brown on one
side, about 3 to 4 minutes. Turn; cook until medium brown and crisp on the other side, turning as needed to cook a total of 8 minutes. Transfer to paper towels to drain. Sprinkle lightly with fresh-squeezed lemon juice, as desired. If needed, cook the croquettes in batches. Keep the first batch warm on a foil-lined pie pan in an oven set to 250 degrees. Top with with fresh thyme sprigs and lemon slices, if desired. Serve with Daughter’s Quick Yogurt Sauce, if using. Makes 6 salmon croquettes. Cracker Note: saltine cracker crumbs are available in some places, but they are getting harder and harder to find. Prepare your own in a food processor or use a rolling pin on crackers sealed in a food storage bag. It takes 25 to 30 cracker squares to make one cup. To make my Quick Yogurt Sauce, stir 1 to 2 tablespoons of prepared Dijon-style mustard, or to taste, into one cup of 0-fat plain Greek yogurt.

composer, bandleader, and internationally renowned artist, Ernest “Khabeer” Dawkins created Live the Spirit Residency and the Englewood Jazz Festival as part of a threeyear “Meet the Composers Round VII New Residencies” grant to promote the creation of new work by emerging composers, provide music instruction and other activities for youth and residents, and to develop the Live the Spirit Big Band. His vision and determination to increase awareness and appreciation of jazz and jazz artists by developing programs — master classes, workshops, residencies, exchanges – that speak to this under-served community and that reflect its history and experiences, has kept the Festival alive and growing for over a decade.

A Testimonial from Country Financial I just want to thank Will Rogers and the Chicago Defender so much for their continuous follow-up, which made me, a client of the Chicago Defender, and you and I very good friends. I want to share that I received a call last week from a prospect wanting to come in for life insurance. I scheduled the appointment for 8/18/2015. When the prospect came in I asked how did you hear about me? He pulled out a page of the Chicago Defender with my ad and picture. I was so excited; I began to shout and thank Jesus. The prospect got excited also saying “ Wow, I thank Jesus for Him sending us to you, and thank you for doing business in the community.” He also stated that he was glad I was in the community so that he could have access to me if needed. My investment with the Chicago Defender is paying off. I am so glad that I made that investment in my business to market in my community. I have decided that I am going to have an ongoing ad with the Chicago Defender. I appreciate you Will Rogers and the Chicago Defender Team. Thank you so much! Kandi Keyes-Winford
