City News Thana Muhammad Memorial on Saturday; Family Looking for Justice A memorial for Thana Muhammad will take place at Hales Franciscan High School Saturday, August 18 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Muhammad, 81, was killed earlier this summer. She was found in her home, located at 10000 South Forest Avenue. Muhammad’s body was found when police performed a welfare check and discovered that her body was cut in half and placed into two bins. The perpetrator is still at large and Muhammad’s family has offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the person or persons responsible for her death. Muhammad, who previously went by Jean “Mattie” Chandler before converting to Islam, spent her life caring for others. For 40 years she served in the healthcare field as an X-Ray technician and an Ultrasound Technologist.

Thana Muhammad Muhammad tirelessly gave back to her community throughout the years as an entrepreneur. She kept community residents employed when she owned a now-defunct restaurant. Furthermore, she owned multiple properties on the South Side community, where she pro-

vided affordable rent to tenants. If you have any information to help bring justice to Thana Muhammad and help make the community safer, please contact Ashanti Chimurenga: (224) 6785001 and Southside Detectives: (312) 747-8271.

Community Programs Accelerator Accepting Applications for 2019; August 31 Deadline CHICAGO – The Community Programs Accelerator at the University of Chicago is now accepting applications for its 2019 program cycle. An initiative of the Office of Civic Engagement, the accelerator provides a range of support for nonprofit organizations based on or serving the South Side of Chicago. The application is online at communityprograms.uchicago.edu and will be accepted until August 31. Launched in 2014, the Community Programs Accelerator develops and strengthens nonprofits through connections to University resources and partnerships with industry experts. The program provides three levels of assistance tailored to an organization’s needs, such as office space, coaching, strategic planning, and board development. “Last year we had a record number of applications and welcomed three new organizations into the core program at different places in their growth and development,” said Ryan K. Priester, director of community programs in the Office of Civic Engagement. “The Community Programs Accelerator is designed to meet groups where they are and provide them with the resources to get to the next level.” The accelerator’s core program provides funding along with intense, focused, and customized support over a period of up to three years. Organizations at the associates level receive general capacity building support from accelerator staff and interns to help fulfill a core function through three to five relevant projects over the course of a year. Special Projects organizations receive discrete technical assistance through staff support and student engagement to address a specific issue or project over the course of 10 to 20 weeks. The Community Programs Accelerator seeks nonprofit organizations, preferably with 501c3 status, at any stage of development that serve at least one of the nine mid-South Side neighborhoods: Douglas, Grand Boulevard, Greater Grand Crossing, Hyde Park, Kenwood, Oakland, South Shore, Washington Park, and Woodlawn. The accelerator will host information sessions on August 22 and August 28 at 6 p.m., at 5225 S. Cottage Grove Ave. www.chicagodefender.com

Cover Story The Bud Billiken: Family, Food, and Activism By Marshelle R. Sanders Defender Contributing Writer The 89th Annual Bud Billiken Parade proved once again that it is one of the events that makes Chicago, particularly the South Side, so great. This past Saturday, August 10, was focused on celebrating youth, education and the African-American community. The parade always marks the end of summer vacation and the beginning of school for Chicago’s youth. For all the viewers from the sidelines or at home, this Parade is moves down Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive from 39th to 55th streets. People from all over the City and different cultures observed the celebration as participants walked in the warm weather to show love, support and inspire everyone. This year it was stimulated by food, families, entertainment, activists and a lineup of politicians. The 89th Bud Billiken parade featured celebrated figures including Grand Marshals Rapper Vic Mensa and Comedian Deon Cole from ABC’s hit show “Blackish.” Honorary Marshals included: “The Chi” actors Jason Mitchell and Jacob Latimore; Chicago Legend George Daniels, owner of George’s Music Room; Andrea Evans, Director, Northeastern Illinois University’s Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies; and Cmdr. Zeita Merchant, First African American woman to lead a U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit; and 12-year-old college graduate Dorothy Jean Tillman. Dozens of bands, as well as Chicago media outlets such as WGCI, V-103 and Power 92 came through to hype up the crowd. There were dance and drill teams, marching units, local and state politicians, floats and celebrities that traveled through Bronzeville before culminating in Washington Park for a picnic with food and drinks, a mini job fair, face painting, games and giveaways including medical screenings and school supplies. Activism Rapper Vic Mensa, songwriter and Hyde Park native, entered the parade on a motorcycle leading the way with the Martin Luther King High School band behind him. The rapper, who has been an outspoken critic of the police department, finished his duties leading the South Side’s premier back-to-school event before he circled back on his motorcycle to join activists carrying a “Convict Jason Van Dyke” banner. He and his supporters shouted “16 shots, 16 shots” sending vibes through the streets as Rahm Emanuel folTHE CHICAGO DEFENDER

According to Mensa’s Instagram page, Mensa and the group were stopped by police officers near 51st Street and had an argument. “You want to arrest me? You want to arrest me, and I’m the grand marshal of the parade?” Mensa shouted. “Go ahead, arrest me.” Mensa continued to report: “Police tried to cut us off because we have a ‘Convict Jason Van Dyke’ banner. So, the police came, and they threatened to arrest me.” Mensa and some other members of the groups complained that they were receiving different directions from the police. Despite the disruption between Mensa and the CPD, Mensa gave away supplies at the parade. Earlier that week Mensa handed out over 1,000 backpacks at a giveaway at the ATT store on 86th Cottage Grove. “We do this, so we can teach the next generation to be more equipped to dig themselves out this hole they put us in and live with love, power and self-respect,” he said. Politics On Saturday, the parade also served as a campaign spot for the 2019 Chicago mayor’s race. Mayor Rahm Emanuel marched in the parade. As he strolled down the parade route, Emanuel mostly received smiles and cordial handshakes, but he was also greeted by a group of people near 49th Street with a sign that proclaimed, “Rahm Emanuel Got 2 Go.” The parade came at a time of

heightened political tension in the Black community where Emanuel has been trying to rebuild support that eroded after the Laquan McDonald police shooting scandal erupted in late 2015. Emanuel and police Superintendent Eddie Johnson responded to the bloodshed by assigning 600 additional officers to five police districts on the South and West sides. These are areas that have seen the most significant share of gun violence. The mayor also condemned a culture that he said condones gang activity and too often does not provide police with valuable information they need to apprehend those who pull the trigger. The issue was top of mind for many of Emanuel’s political opponents Saturday as they greeted voters along the parade route. “I want to help people. The community is just beat down so much,” said businessman Willie Wilson, who rode part of the route in a red Corvette before walking the rest. “I’m telling people, we don’t need more police officers in the City of Chicago. We need more jobs and contracts in those communities. Let’s try that, because for years, they’ve been putting in police, police, police, and the crime still goes up, up and up.” For his part, Emanuel mainly focused on the theme of the parade — education. He touted his plan for universal pre-K in the coming years and noted his past push to make full-day kindergarten a reality across the city. “This September, we’re embarking on a four-year plan where www.chicagodefender.com

every 4-year-old in the City will get free, full-day pre-K. This is a new beginning,” Emanuel said. “It’s a new day for the City of Chicago — and seven years ago, we didn’t even provide full-day kindergarten for every child. So, when we’re all done, we will have added two additional years of education to a child.” Other notable politicians who participated in the parade and festivities were JB Pritzker, Dorothy Brown, and Susan Mendoza. The Youth Gayinga Washington, founder and CEO of Women’s Breakthrough Alliance Organization in the Austin community, came out to support the youth with the Mayor of Broadview, Illinois, Katrina Thompson. Washington stated, “For our culture, we get so much negative press only. This goes to show and prove that we can come together in peace and have fun, and it’s something positive. I’m very excited because there are so many youth in the parade… I love it, it’s my favorite part seeing them dance.” Vendors along the parade route created a special tradition too. One woman has been coming to the Bud Billiken Parade for the past ten years to sell her ice cones in honor of her mother right in front of the Chicago Defender Building on 44th street. Ms. Youngblood, (she wouldn’t give me her legal name), who stated she is the low-end’s finest. “This used to be the Metropolitan Funeral Home. My mother passed away in 1992, and we had her funeral here. I come back to this spot every year, and I do this for her to honor her memory. I do remember the Defender being on Michigan, but now that they are here on 44th

I still come here every year”. The Bud Billiken parade was founded by Robert Sengstacke Abbott, the man who founded the Chicago Defender in 1905. Abbott published the first issue of the Defender on May 6, 1905. Abbott used the Defender as a forum to attack racial injustice from the outset. Abbott founded the Bud Billiken Parade and Picnic in 1929, which has developed into an annual celebration for youth, education and African–American life in Chicago, Illinois. In 1921, Abbott started Defender Junior, a page of his weekly paper devoted to children. It grew to include a club, drawing children across the U.S. and Africa and serving as an alternative to the Boy Scouts in response to the segregation at the time. Bud Billiken, the page’s fictional editor/mascot described as the guardian and protector of children, was invented by Abbott and the Defender’s executive editor, Lucius Harper. Depending on which authority you ask, the two either found the word “Billiken” in a dictionary, or Harper had a carving of one on his desk. The Bud Billiken has a new outlook, and that is to strive to unite, empower, improve the quality of life, and enrich families and individuals in our communities. In honor of Mr. Abbott, the parade’s commitment to the community is to provide opportunities related to education, health, wellness, business training and entrepreneurial development with the help of dedicated, genuine people who want to make the African-American society in Chicago better. Here’s to evolvement in 2019! (See pages 9-12 for pictures) August 15 - 21, 2018 3

Community Homeschooling: A Different Approach to School By Sharice Bradford Defender Contributing Editor The number of parents who homeschool their children is growing. There are many different ways that homeschooling can be accomplished. For some it is homeschooling, for others it is unschooling, and there is even road-schooling. This number is increasing in the African American community. According to an article in The Atlantic, in 2016, approximately 8 percent of homeschooled children are African American. The article further states that the number of African American students who were homeschooled tripled from 1999-2007. There are many reasons that African American families choose to homeschool—some do it because of the lack of quality schools in their community, others because of the educational bias exhibited among their children in schools. Whatever the reason, more and more African American parents are choosing to homeschool. Kristal Davis, a Chicago mother of four (ages 15, 7, 4 and 2), started homeschooling her oldest child when he was continuously disciplined and labeled by a teacher as “a bad kid.” Though he was ranked second in his class and his grades and test scores were high, teachers refused to give him extra work to alleviate the fact that he was bored and finished with classwork. Natasha Nicholes also a Chicago mother of four (ages 18, 9, and 8-year-old twins) chose to start homeschooling when she noticed that her oldest child was not thriving in a way she thought her child should. He too was a good student, passing his tests and making good grades but there was no fun in school for him. Nicholes also noticed that the teachers were not having a good time either. Her decision to start homeschooling came from not wanting to put her child in a climate where schools were run more like a business than a place of education. She says that she feels that learning should be fun, and it should be functional, but never a chore. Ashley Marshall-Seward, mother of three (ages 12, 11 and 8), from Atlanta had different motivations. When her oldest was a toddler, she and her husband began to discuss school options. They noticed that their son was more advanced, and there were a lack of good school choices in their 4 August 15 - 21, 2018

neighborhood. Charter schools were not in existence at that time and the cost of private school led them to consider homeschooling. Marshall-Seward, who believes that learning begins in the womb, has been homeschooling for 12 years now. Of course, homeschooling is not without its critiques: what about curriculum, what about the children being academically on

track with their peers, and what seems to be most important in today’s society, what about socialization? All of the mothers stated that none of these criticisms have any merit. As a matter of fact, due to the fact that their children are not limited to just interacting with their peers, homeschooled children, at least the children of these parents, are very socialized. Davis states that homeschooled kids, in www.chicagodefender.com

her opinion, are comfortable interacting with any age group because they are not separated and interact with children of all ages. Marshall-Seward adds, “Most homeschooled children don’t lack social skills at all and can carry a conversation with various individuals of all ages. Homeschooled children meet up with friends, belong to clubs, and take classes (outside of the home). I usually have to dial

back on the socialization because we are always on the go.” The parents have different methods of choosing their curriculum. Curriculum is based on the educational needs of each child. For Nicholes, each of her children has a subject area that they excel in and she often allows them to be in charge of some of the things continued on page 5

Marshall-Seward builds her own curriculum specific to her children and uses books, workbooks, weekly classes that meet in person, the library, museums, parks and online programs to supplement the curriculum. All of the mothers stated that their curriculum is tailored to the needs of each child. Davis says, “I can have my 7 year old working on 4th grade math and 3rd grade science… the one-onone attention gives my kids the opportunity to learn at a faster pace.” Advantages to homeschooling vary for each of the families. With First New Album in 13 Years, Jeffrey Osborne Hits South Shore Music Festival

By Katara Patton Defender Senior Editor Jeffrey Osborne fans may have been missing the smooth sounds of the legendary balladeer until his latest project, Worth It All, dropped in May; it was the first time he released an R&B album in 13 years. Chicago fans will get a chance to hear him in person this weekend at the South Shore Music Festival. “I never stopped working,” Osborne told the Defender. “I’ve

always been out there doing concerts; I did jazz but I hadn’t done an album of original songs in 13 years…I needed to find the right fit and the right company that believed in it.” Worth It All mirrors his own relationships. He’s been married for 36 years to his wife, Sheri, and like any other relationship, he said “it has its ups and downs, bumps in the road, but being that we’ve been through so much…it’s worth going through those trials and tribulations. When you get through those times, you realize that it is worth it

all…Who wants to start over? Why start over? Take the person you really love and work things out.” Osborne has four children—3 daughters and 1 son; he jokingly said it took four attempts before he had a son. And he and his son Jeffrey Osborne, Jr., 28, collaborate on this project. “It is actually incredible,” he said about working with his son. “I never saw this coming…he wasn’t ever into music. He was an athlete. He went to college for basketball and then started rapping. He’s now come full circle as a sound engineer. “He’s with me all the time…He travels with me; it’s nice to see another side of him. He listens to a whole different side of music than I do so it’s nice to bounce things off him; I get a different perspective when I talk to him about music; he’s introducing me to another side.” Music runs in Osborne’s family; his father was an “incredible” play-

er, Osborne recalled. “He didn’t go after his dream; he had 12 children. He realized back then that he couldn’t make enough money in a 40-piece orchestra (to support his family).” But Jeffrey Osborne’s mother didn’t want her son to give up on his dream too. “She watched my father sit around and not chase his dream,” Osborne said. “She didn’t want to see that happen to me. She said she had raised 12 kids and knew I had what it takes to do it.” Osborne has enjoyed a long career and plans to be around longer for it. He became a vegan last year. He says he has always been into health and tried to stay in shape, jogging 2 miles a day. He started drinking alkaline water last year and it made him feel so good that he researched the vegan lifestyle because plants are “the most alkaline thing you can eat.” He said your body [with alkaline] is more immune to diseases and “alkaline will cure anything.”

“I’m 70 years old…if I can preserve a few things, why not.” He said the hardest thing to give up was seafood, but he “feels much better and has more energy.” In addition to his music, Osborne has a foundation to give money back to his home town community in Rhode Island. He sponsors an annual celebrity classic. Osborne will be in concert on Sunday, August 19 at the South Shore Music Festival at 6:30 p.m. (The fest runs from 3-8p.m.) He said, “I want the people of Chicago to know how much I appreciate them; this is one of the greatest cities in the country and is at the forefront as far as music is concerned. Some of the greatest musicians came out of Chicago…it is one of the cities you go to perform and you have to be good. I like that about Chicago. They will let you know when you don’t sound good. I always look forward to coming to Chicago.”

Second Annual Bronzeville Mayor’s Ball at Gallery Guichard Set for August 18 By Katara Patton Defender Senior Editor Once again, the “mayor” and “first lady” of Bronzeville will host the Mayor’s Ball gala at Gallery Guichard, 436 E. 47th Street. And it is truly a “party with a purpose” as Gallery owners Frances and Andre Guichard will donate proceeds from the evening to Dunamis Teens, Miss & Gents, a community organization that mentors youth. “Our passion is showcasing Bronzeville on the map,” Andre told the Defender about accepting the title as mayor of Bronzeville. “We first and foremost acknowledge the pillars in our community; the progressive businesses….and we use this platform for philanthropy.” “It’s so important to make sure our youth have interactions with positive people….we need to share with them so they can grow into positive and productive citizens,” Frances said. The Ball will include live music and entertainment, food, a bar and live art painting, which will give people a chance to see two artists create work. The Guichards have also tapped Chicago natives and celebrities The Tate Brothers (Larenz, Lahmard and LaRon) to serve as co-hosts for the evening.

The Tate Brothers LaRon told the Defender that he and his brothers always enjoy returning home to Chicago and are happy to partner with the Guichards. “What they do for the community…for us to be exposed to Bronzeville [is great],” said LaRon about Bronzeville’s mayor and first lady. “It is so inspiring to know that we come from a very rich past…and the fact that Frances and Andre are still in the community trying to make a difference as well as exposing the community is uplifting. It helped form who we are, our foundation of what we represent in terms of family, unity, giving back.” “It is so important to give back,”

Frances said. “You can receive all the blessings you want, but you have got to figure out how we can give back…instead of complaining about what you see on the news…. and do it [give back] while having fun.” The Guichards have donated more than $10,000 and plan to give more this year. New Black Girl Magic By Sharice Bradford Defender Contributing Editor I must admit, I have never really been a fan of tennis, but recently my bae sat down and explained the game to me, and now that I understand how things work and now that I can follow the game, I actually enjoy watching it. Another thing that has me checking tournament schedules and sitting in front of the TV is all of the #BlackGirlMagic I see on the screen. So now we don’t only have to watch Venus and Serena, we have so many more talented tennis players to watch. Venus and Serena are not the only two faces we see in tennis that look like us. I love watching the Williams sisters play-- their strength, power and control are bar none. They show with each and every match they play that their star status was not given to them; it was earned. And while they are aging out in tennis years, they have blazed a trail that is being followed by a new batch of strong, dedicated and winning African American girls and girls of color. Not only are these talented young ladies following this trail, they are paying homage to the two sisters from Compton, Calif, who made more girls like me take a notice to the game of tennis. So if you are not a tennis fan, I encourage you to get to know the game or if nothing else, watch these rising stars as they take their place among the tennis elite. Sloane Stephens A native of Plantation, Fla., this young woman is a tennis star on the rise. Sloane also won the U.S. Open last year (2017) and has at least 6 singles titles under her belt. Her athleticism and power during her matches make her exciting to watch. She is definitely going places and will be winning more titles in her career. Sachia Vickery Another Florida native, Sachia Vickery is just as enjoyable to watch as the Williams sisters and Sloane Stephens. Vickery admits that Serena Williams is one of her idols as well as tennis great Martina Hingis. My first time watching

Naomi Osaka Sachia was during the Indian Wells Tennis tournament and she was powerful as she took out the third seed to advance. She did not win the tournament however she did give an amazing performance. Naomi Osaka Osaka, born in Japan, won the Women’s Division of the Indian Wells tournament. Osaka, the daughter of a Haitian father and Japanese mother, was a silent threat. You can tell by her demeanor that she is shy, but she is not shy on the tennis court. She was able to advance through each round, even taking out Sachia Vickery at the Indian Wells BNP Paribas tournament to win the title. The 20 year old was able to walk away with the largest amount of prize money in her career. There is so much more to be seen from this talented powerhouse.

Ballout Group Hosts First Ever Chi Jam

Taylor Townsend Madison Keys Madison is from Illinois (yay, for a homestate representative) and she is dynamic on the tennis court. Madison’s tennis idol is Roger Federer and he is definitely a great person to admire. Taylor Townsend Townsend is a Chicago native and currently at her best rank of #61 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). Currently her record is 177-108. At 22 years of age, Townsend went pro in 2012 and has many more years to play ahead of her. The best thing about each of these young women is that they are at the beginning of their tennis careers and they have a long way to go. I look forward to many more years of watching them play and watching them keep the mantel that Venus and Serena received from Althea Gibson. The strength, power and professionalism of these young women make them great already with only greater things ahead of them. Look out WTA, #BlackGirlMagic on the rise.

Chicago has always been known to produce some of the best high school basketball players, from Jabari Parker, Derrick Rose, to Talen Horton-Tucker. The sport of basketball has always been a key component to the culture of the city. While over time it has been changing, Brandon Smith, the creator of the Ballout Group, a premier basketball group focused on showcasing the athletes of the future through events and programs, has plans to get Chicago basketball back to its traditional roots. This past weekend at Jones College Prep, located at 700 S. State, the Ballout Group hosted their first ever “Chi Jam,” a two-ontwo tournament featuring Chicago’s top senior prospects. Antonio Reeves, who played this past weekend in Chi Jam, a very promising prospect in the class of 2019 is making a big return to Chicago this upcoming season playing for the Simeon Career Academy. Last year Reeves moved to Arizona playing for Shadow Mountains and had a very successful season. Finishing with 25-2, a state championship, and a national ranking, this year with the Wolverines he plans on having an even better season than his last. Reeves says he has set the goal to win city and state this season as he goes into the last year of his high school basketball career. With five offers on the table from Northern Illinois, University of Milwaukee, Saint Louis University, Northern Arizona, and Chicago State, his top choice is the University of Milwaukee but he is waiting to receive more offers before committing. While two-on-two tournaments are not the traditional tournaments that people are accustomed to watching, Brandon Smith, creator of the Ballout Group and “Chi Jam,” has plans to change that. “Through Ballout, we plan on putting together different basketball events that you’re not accustomed to seeing; instead of seeing a lot of five-on-five, you’re going to see a lot of three-on-three and two-on-two.” Smith wants to ensure that Ballout plays a huge part in helping high school athletes reach the next level in their career not only through tournaments to showcase their talents but also through a scholarship fund. “The ‘Ball for Scholarships’ will be a different look to give some of these kids who don’t have money or scholarships to make it through playing basketball.” Smith plans to continue hosting events such as “Chi Jam” through the Ballout Group to continue giving back to the community and helping promising athletes reach the next level of their career.
