Christmas Tree Recycling to Begin Saturday As the holiday season draws to a close, many Chicagoans have to dispose of their Christmas trees that have decorated homes for the past few weeks. Beginning this Saturday, January 6, and continuing through Saturday, January 20, the City in partnership with the Chicago Park District will recycle Christmas trees free of charge. Simply take your tree to a Park District Christmas tree recycling location and it will be chipped and ground into mulch. To find locations, visit: https://www.recyclebycity.com/chicago/ brief/christmas-tree-recycling. Free mulch will also be available at certain locations beginning January 8. Recycling Christmas trees is an easy way for residents to make a big impact on the environment by keeping the alleys clear, reducing the number of trees deposited in landfills and reusing the trees in an environmentally-friendly way. The mulch not given away to City residents will be used in local parks to protect and nourish plants and soil. Only live/natural trees without flocking are accepted (no garland or wreaths). Because the trees are mulched, all tinsel, ornaments, lights, and stands must be removed. Plastic bags used for transport should also be removed before depositing the trees. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Meet The Grandmothers of the Restorative Justice Movement By Jenny Casas and Sarah Conway City Bureau Restorative justice, a mediation technique that uses peace circles to help people resolve disputes, is practiced in Chicago schools and has become increasingly popular in youth organizations. This fall, it’s taken its first step into the criminal justice system with the opening of the Restorative Justice Community Court in North Lawndale. Many local organizations now embrace restorative justice principles, and most practitioners point at the work of two people in particular: Cheryl Graves and Ora Schub, who are described often as “the grandmothers of Chicago’s restorative justice movement.” Both women were criminal defense attorneys and clinical law professors at Northwestern University. In 2006 they left law to start the Community Justice for Youth Institute, an organization that runs restorative justice workshops and peace circle THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Ora Schub. Photo by Sebastián Hidalgo keeper trainings. They recently sat down with City Bureau to discuss the growth of the movement and influential moments in their careers. Over shrimps and grits, unlimited biscuits and coffee, Graves and Schub talk between jokes and stories of peace circles past. They poke fun at each other and share the easy manner of two people who’ve known each other personally and professionally for a long time. Graves pulls out a talking piece—this one is a small silver disk, but they can be any object of personal importance—which is passed around the circle to signify who has the floor. Here are some of the highlights: www.chicagodefender.com

On the purpose of holding a peace circle Schub: If it works, the circle creates a safe space where you can be vulnerable. Cause we can disagree with each other on opinions but we can’t disagree on your story. Graves: The thing is [peace circles] don’t need to be about conflict and issues. It’s about community building and celebrating, healing or grieving; it’s about relating to each other. On keeping a peace circle: Graves: Restorative justice, particularly circle work, continued on page 4

Cheryl Graves carries this image in her purse everywhere she goes. The art was created by a young man she sat in circle with named Ty. “I think he did this piece about his mother,” Graves explained. “Because she dreams big dreams for him. It’s just like when you’re sitting in circle with people you don’t know. What’s the point if you don’t believe in big dreams, that things can change and be better?” Photo by Jenny Simeone Casas Restorative Justice, continued from, Page 03

keeps you humble because it’s not about me being the leader. [It’s about] everybody’s experiences and stories, that’s the wisdom that makes the circle rich. It evens out the playing field. You don’t make decisions by vote, you make decisions by consensus, which is hard and messy, right? But nobody’s voice is discarded. Every voice matters. Schub: Sitting in the circle, keeping the circle, one of the hardest things I could learn was giving up control so that other people could also become keepers in the circle and that’s the only way that a circle works. It doesn’t work if I try to make it work. In a way, I owe so much of what my life is to this. For most of my life, I’ve criticized and complained about the way things are or were. This is one of the few things that poses some solutions, not just the criticisms. On how Graves brought Schub into the practice “kicking and screaming”: Schub: Cheryl was the one that introduced me to this, and I was like, “Bull shit. I’m here to represent my clients. Some things are right, and some things are wrong, what’s the point of discussing it?” I was at a community panel and there was this little kid, about 10 years old, being charged with battery of a police officer. He was protecting his sister from her boyfriend who was beating her up. The cops were called and they came in and picked up the kid, and he kicked the cop in the balls. They charged him with battery. I was furious. At the panel, one of the people said to him, “You went to protect your sister and that’s really good and important. But you’re an African American young man and there are things you’ll learn about dealing with police.” I thought about how that would have never been acknowledged in court, and about the compassion and wisdom of the community. Eventually I thought, “there’s something about [restorative justice] that makes a lot of sense.” 4 January 3 - 9, 2018

On the importance of community buy-in: Graves: I’ll never forget, I was in Austin at a community meeting talking about creating new programs to keep young men out of the system and bring them back to community. One man came up to me and said, “You work for Northwestern, one of those big, White institutions that does research on Black people and we die.” I said, “Right now, it isn’t about doing research on Black people and them dying, we are dying in the system.” Now, he is getting an attitude and I’m getting an attitude. I remember thinking, “I’m a sister from the South Side, can’t you just go on the strength of the idea?” It was an awful experience but really important because he was saying, “We don’t know you and you aren’t asking us if we like the idea—you are telling us it is a good idea and that we should get involved.” He said I needed to talk to people and get to know the community. He was so right; it didn’t matter what I thought. They are the community and they are the people impacted. I called [a mentor] crying and she said, “Cheryl, you are thinking juvenile justice but people don’t live in silos. Yes, my son is in the system but I have one that is sick and needs medical care, I have one that is not doing well in school, and I’m not sure how I am going to meet the rent this month. What you are talking about is important but it’s not the whole thing. People want you to recognize that they are dealing with the whole thing because they are whole people, and that you care about them, not just pushing your idea.” She said, you show up, you come to meetings without any agenda. Just be there. That’s what I did, I just met people as people. That’s exactly what peace circles are: talking about relationships, not the issue at hand. You eventually get to the issue. On the challenges of using restorative justice in the court system: Schub: The court system isn’t about healing or relationships. There are three questions always asked in the www.chicagodefender.com

criminal law system: Is there a crime that was committed? Who committed it? What can we do to punish the person? In restorative justice we instead ask: Was there a harm? Who caused the harm? Who was harmed? How can we hold the person accountable? What can we do to make the community safer again? When you look at a harm done, you need first to look at the four parts of a person: mental, physical, emotional and spiritual. In our court systems, you just bring the mental and physical. In restorative justice, you bring your whole self. Courts take responsibility away from community, and that’s part of the problem. We see a problem, and instead of taking care of it ourselves, we turn it over to the socalled professionals. The best thing is to keep young people from getting arrested, and entering the system at all. On measuring the success of restorative practices: Graves: Say a young person hadn’t been going to school at all, and now is going two days a week. Does that matter? Or not at all because they’re not going all five? Maybe when [that young person] came to you, they were fighting every day, but now they’re fighting less. Maybe they weren’t open at all, and now they’re doing art and being more expressive, and after a couple months they’re willing to talk in circle. How do you show that? How do you say that it matters? [Peace circle keepers] feel it, because we’re seeing the change. Schub: It depends how we frame those [evaluation] questions. What it comes down to is, what do we want to accomplish? That should determine the questions we ask, and coming up with those questions should include everyone in the circle. On the title “grandmothers of restorative justice”: Graves: That’s only because we’re old. Seriously. This report was produced by City Bureau, a Chicago-based journalism lab. Power Play: Maria Barlow Runs For Cook County Commissioner By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer Newcomer to campaign politics Maria Barlow hopes to bring “a choice, a change and a difference” to residents residing in Cook County’s fourth district come Election Day 2018. Barlow, a Chicago native and practicing family law attorney at her own law firm, The Law Offices of Maria M. Barlow, LLC, since 2013, spoke to the Defender about where she believes incumbent Cook County Commissioner Michael Moore is lacking, what a strong leader for her community looks like, and her path to the polls. Barlow pulled no punches when critiquing Moore. She highlighted, for example, Moore’s co-sponsoring the sugary beverage tax was a bad idea given the district’s proximity to the Indiana border. She said a lot of businesses suffered due to the tax. She said if re-elected Moore would attempt to reintroduce the tax if given the opportunity. “First, I don’t think we have very good or strong representation in the fourth district; I’ve lived here all my life and I’ve seen a lot of changes and not for the good,” said Barlow. “If we had strong leadership, we would be able to get a lot more done and keep more businesses here. I don’t think the current commissioner has the strength to carry the fourth district in the right direction.” Barlow identified “strength” within public officials as someone with independent ideas and a willingness to follow ideas that “make sense.” “We need a leader able to say ‘No, that’s not a good idea’ but here is what we can do to bridge that gap,” said Barlow. Although the controversial sweetened beverage tax was a lightning rod, Barlow said she always had intentions of running for commissioner dating back to her days in college at Northeastern Illinois University where she majored in justice studies. She said she was the first person in her family to attend college. “I was probably going to wait a little longer, but the sug-

Maria Barlow ar tax helped me realize that we can’t do this another four years,” said Barlow. The youngest of 11 children, Barlow said growing up she witnessed repeatedly how her eight brothers were needlessly harassed by law enforcement officials, which sparked within her a desire to stand up and advocate for those who needed her. She said she learned over the years that while times may be tough for her, others are experiencing even harsher circumstances. Barlow said while she is well versed in many issues throughout the community, she doesn’t know everything and would welcome new ideas being brought to the table as well. Among the additions she said she would like to bring to the community are more local clinics, mental health service options, and more businesses like chain food restaurants to come to the district. Seemingly machine politic elections are an issue of concern to Barlow.

“I think the bigger issue in Cook County and Illinois is you’re constantly running the same people for the same offices or people from the same machine,” said Barlow. “You have to get people who are strong, who are leaders, who are going to lead the district in the right direction.” Barlow said through her law practice, she’s able to advocate on behalf of her clients but with a greater political platform she would be able to do even more. “As an attorney I can only advocate for so many, but if the laws are against people and the policies are against people, no matter how well I advocate, we are still going to be back where we started, nothing is going to change, nothing is going to be truly done until we change the policies and the principles behind what’s going on,” said Barlow. friends since she became ill, asked that she be remembered as a mother, daughter, sister and aunt with a heart “bigger than the world.” In 2014, her father, Eric Garner, was stopped on Staten Island for selling untaxed cigarettes and died after a White police officer subdued him with a chokehold. A grand jury declined to indict the officer; the city agreed to pay a $6 million civil settlement. Garner’s last words, “I can’t breathe,” became a slogan for activists. Erica Garner became a voice for police accountability after his death, criticizing Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio over policing matters. In 2016, she campaigned on behalf of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent, for www.chicagodefender.com

Eric Garner died after a confrontation with NYPD. president. Tracie Morris: Nurturing Talent, Creating Leaders By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer Surrounded by the love and nurturing of her family, Tracie Morris knew she was destined for great things, but growing up throughout the various communities on the South Side of Chicago—she didn’t quite know where her path would lead her. As the VP of Human Resources at ComEd, her 15 years at one of the country’s largest utilities companies, her mission has become very clear— lead others to become Tracie Morris great leaders. “I grew up in Woodlawn. I spent my summers with my grandmother who lived in Englewood and then a small portion of the time we lived in Roseland. So, we moved from Woodlawn, to Roseland to Alsip, and it was a great experience for me. Although, I spent a lot of my childhood in private schools, it taught me a lot about diversity.” Attending St. Lawrence Elementary School in Woodlawn introduced her to a broader range of students from different cultural backgrounds. She says, “With those experiences it really helped me in the workplace because it taught me to be resilient and respect differences.” She went on to attend and graduate from Jones Commercial High School, a CPS magnet school which at the time taught student’s business preparatory courses. Morris was accepted at North Central College earning her BS and at Benedictine College where she studied Psychology and Organizational Behaviors earning her MSMOB along with taking some Ph.D. courses at University of Chicago. “What I’ve learned in psychology helps me in a workplace because people come into work with all types of issues. I have several nurses who work for me, a doctor. You have to be able to meet people where they are,” says Morris. In the past few months, many companies have leaned on their HR departments to prioritize the importance of intolerable behavior in the workplace since sexual harassment and abuse reported cases escalated. As one of the leading women senior executives at ComEd, Morris has also reiterated the company’s position in providing a secure support system among employees. “I’ve been meeting with small groups of women and men to say if you’ve experienced something in the workplace, I want you to bring it to me. I don’t care who the person is. I don’t care what color they are. I want to hear about your experience because I have to worry about the next generation under you being successful in the workplace. But it is very hard, and people understand that because we have women, even with this Harvey Weinstein issue, ask, ‘what took women so long?’” She adds, “Because they didn’t feel safe to bring the issues forward. Let’s not punish them because they didn’t feel safe. You have to create a safe environment where people can raise issues and it can be dealt with quickly and effectively.” Past situations have established the public scrutiny of women such as Anita Hill and how they are perceived in mainstream media, says Morris. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Morris receives an award from UNCF President Michael Lomax (r) as Tom Ricketts, Cubs Owner, and a guest look on. “People feel like it’s just going to tear down my career and I’ll never be able to break through the glass ceiling. We have to realize that these women have their children and careers.” Because it’s easier said than done, Morris has an “open door” policy to provide sanctuary for employees feeling apprehensive about such complaints. “Some of the things I tell people how to do it anonymously if they feel that it’s important for them to do it. When women bring it up anonymously, they get the courage to step forward and be the poster child for it. That’s new for women to be able to do that because men are still predominantly at the top. Even though we have a female CEO, how many female CEOs out here do we have?” The President and CEO of ComEd Exelon Anne Pramaggiore has led the charge in mentoring both men and women at the company since her start there in 1998. As the first female CEO, she’s also encouraged her executive staff to facilitate more time in guiding, opening up more opportunities for growth in-house. The company’s women’s group allows managers to interact with Pramaggiore and network, asking her how to overcome challenges and build success stories in their career journey. Morris feels her CEO’s story is unique because she studied theater and eventually pursued law, and as an attorney worked her way, learning the operations side of a major utility company. www.chicagodefender.com

“I tell young women to ask her about her journey because it’s not traditional. And I think that’s important. But until we have strong women networks, it’s very hard,” said Morris. But, she admits there is still a long way because women and men share a different approach in seeking career promotion and growth. Networking is essential. “Men will come to me all the time and say, ‘I want to meet the CEO and I want to play golf with them. Where does he or she play golf?’ They have an agenda and a plan. Women don’t want to do that—it’s too showy. ‘It’s not something I want to do.’ I say, ‘Do it, do it anyway!’” As a wife and mother of three adult children, Morris has become a shining example to her team and others on balancing mind, body and spirit. In order to manage an efficient department providing resources to thousands of ComEd Exelon employees, she takes time out every third Saturday teaching yoga. Her home in Sarasota, Fla., provides a refuge to relax and teach class on Lido Beach to other women where they meditate and share some wonderful stories. She reflects, “You need that connection. I think having that as my backdrop, it helps me to focus on my journey of servitude. How can I help to create more women leaders? Because at the end, that’s what my journey has to be about. If it’s not about that, it’s not a successful journey.” January 3 - 9, 2018 7

PRAISE

On The Front Porch to the Hallowed Halls of Higher Education By Shanita Baraka Akintonde 12 voices During my college freshman orientation, I was told to “look at the student to my left and the one to my right because one of us would not be here within the next five years.” The unnerving part of that activity was that I felt like everyone in the room was looking at me, one of a handful of students of color in the room. I felt like screaming, “I will graduate from college, you just wait and see!” Instead I turned my eyes from the imagiShanita Baraka nary stares. Akintonde Due to my good grades and ACT score, I had been admitted as a “regular” undergraduate vs. an “OPPORTUNITY” student. The OPPORTUNITY program was a moniker given to a campus initiative that, when loosely translated, spelled affirmative action. About 90 percent of the Black students at the university I attended were admitted through the OPPORTUNITY program, including all my friends. OPPORTUNITY students got room assignments with other OPPORTUNITY participants, tutors, financial assistance, and monitored study groups. As a “regular” student I was placed through the college’s regular matriculation system, which included no support groups, a random roommate, no scholarship funding, but rather a nice fat bill (my family income was deemed too high for fi-

nancial assistance despite the fact that we had no college savings). Why wasn’t I told about the OPPORTUNITY program? I felt isolated. It wasn’t until my sophomore year of college, when one of my professors, Paulette Whitfield, a seasoned African American professor, took me under her wing, and pointed me toward my future. From there, just like ‘Lil’ Wayne points out in Strange Clouds, “I didn’t even need no directions.” For students of color, the halls of higher education are often filled with earnestly liberal professors who take pity on their presence at best and those who serve as staunch slayers of “affirmative action” quotas at worst. Of course there are many exceptions to this rule, and minority students can find solace in educators who seek to inspire and uplift, issuing intellectual challenges that are intended as character building exercises and not as character deflating ones. Though I play many roles in the lives of my students as an educator, adviser and mentor, I try to remember to pause once in a while to “take my students out On The Front Porch.” It’s a metaphorical and literal reference to my attempt to remember and/or affirm who they are -human beings in need of encouragement and reassurance on both an academic and personal level. For starters, I have turned my office into a pseudo “front porch” by leaving my office door open the majority of time and offering drop in days twice a week. An image of a willow tree sits directly behind my desk, an image so large in depth and width that whenever I lean back in my chair, it appears as though my head is playing hide and seek between its branches. Its etchings are so intricate and detailed, it looks like it was painted by an artistical-

ly-gifted horticulturalist. In fact, students often tell me how much the painting makes them feel relaxed, at peace-just like I felt on Great Grand’s front porch. The down side to all of this, if any, is the number of students that I meet with and the teaching load that accompanies my advising schedule. Add to that mix research, writing, committee demands, public service and consulting work, and for most professors, the time left to devote to student advising and mentoring, is limited. However, I do my best to make time for both because I am determined to “pay things forward” and give the same gifts bestowed on me. I am also reminded of Great Grand’s response to me whenever I complained about something growing up. “God didn’t stop making the world ‘cause of a little rain,” she would state matter-of-factly. I find it personally enriching to look into the lives of, and learn about the varied students I find myself in the position of helping. I have also enjoyed the challenge of making seemingly complex choices simple ones, particularly in the area of leadership, which I readily apply in transitioning my students from the classroom to the boardroom, with the first step taken On the Front Porch. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

PRAISE

Renaissance By EM Evans 12 Voices It took me months to finally sit and pen this. Left for the fall and don’t really care what I missed or who took offense, sometimes you just got to take a solo trip. Did a lot of soul searching and can’t say I ever truly wanted to quit, but I have wondered EM Evans how life would be if my ambition didn’t exist, imagine if, you dropped out of school, left New York City and went back to the 6 just to hear folks whispering behind your back about how you done slipped, how you fell and lost ya grip, how you lost ya mind and all ya cents. I’m talking pressure so intense that your own thoughts start to insist that you might’ve been destined to ride the bench. But somehow you manage to persist and see the bigger pics, understanding that sacrifice today means your future family’s benefit, but even a sentiment like this left my gut feeling like It’d been hit by Ali’s fist when even my “ride or die” chick, decided to go join the clique and started looking at me like I ain’t shit. But let’s say despite the predicament, you embrace the hustle and muscle through, joining forces with an intelligent young brother who shares some common views. The two of you have a dream of what you want to do and start working all day and night without a pot in which to piss, plotting on how to start a business, get rich and change the lives of all these little Black kids. You’re putting up more money but you not even thinking about the sh*t, because this, is like family so you’re convinced that it’s legit. But it’s something about a real vision and competition that make a skinny fella switch, just ask KD. Or you can go down the list of those that dipped on me, and know they only flip cause eventually folks gone see who’s the real MVP so envy makes them want to throw you overboard to sink. Small minds dashed off, but it’s truly a great thing because I been focused on longevity cruising in the HOV trying to Stay Melo in this SouthSide heat. I swear it’s like folks love chaos meanwhile I’m tryna make it cool again to live in peace, if that was ever a thing. Some of these guys will lay you down over a couple a g’s and have your momma in the middle of the street, crying over a blood stained white sheet. fall off the wagon by next week, because what you didn’t see is that a couple more months would’ve made her 10 years alcohol free. Open your eyes and take a peak, life gets deep like being underneath dirt 6 feet. Reality is haunting me in all I think because once you know the truth, it’s all you see. The 99% lacks bravery, Mass Incarceration is the latest slavery and not to mention all the lies we see flashed across TV screens. Yeah, I know what you think, if I had so much to say about it, why’ve I been so quiet? Honestly these past couple years I’ve just been way too high to riot, it was either that or angry and violent because just a few months after the Perfect Timing, I found myself jobless, surrounded by silence. Man my demons had my mind wrapped so tight I couldn’t even disguise it so for awhile I pacified it and tried to deny it, not realizing that when we turn our mind in the villain always wins because it just leaves another young man who doesn’t care if he lives, because on the inside he’s already dead, but that mindset has never been a part of our heritage. We don’t run from problems, we stand up and solve them, but that’s something the education system never took the time and taught us. Hell, let them tell it and you’d think our history starts when they came to Africa and bought us like there weren’t thousands of years prior where we were the shot callers, call it coincidence? I don’t think so. Because history says if you want mind control, you got to limit what you show, because once people know, they can’t help but take ownership and grow, and there’s nothing more dangerous than a brotha with knowledge and hope, no joke. That man would be slow to kill a member of the “other team” if he knew they shared the bloodstream of kings, and it’s a shame how we treat our queens all because mainstream has convinced us that she’s just some useless little Black thing when in actuality she’s royalty of the highest degree. We got to uncover our identity as a community before we can be the people that we’re truly meant to be, but change can’t be something you simply speak or Retweet. The Renaissance will only come if we each jump in waist deep, so I guess the real question is: how bad do you want to be free? Don’t tell me with words, all the greats let their actions take the lead and can’t you see that great is what you were born to be? Let freedom ring, let freedom ring, today my heart is happy as can be, because lately I’ve been seeing things, you can call them visions from a Higher Being and He’s been telling me: That One Day Soon, Let Freedom Ring, will be a Song that Every Man, Woman and Child can Equally Sing. By Carl D. West 12 Voices This is my first article as a member of 12 Voices. But it will not be my final thoughts on the Black political apparatus in my corrupt town. I’m coming hard at an industry that I totally despise. Granted, I’m sure that elected offiCarl D. West cials dislike media. Some probably have a disdain for my work, personally. I don’t blame them! Therefore, be compassionate about why I feel the way I do. Politics is a necessary evil, and unfortunately, Black folks have come out on the worst side of this corrupt horror story. Why? Because of current and past politicians who’ve failed miserably in delivering Black folks to the promised land. Do Not Blame White Boys: Not Exactly is the title of this article. If you’ve lived long enough and have watched the visible disrespect of Black people, then you know that (some) Whites have staked bets solely on themselves. We have grown to expect that of them. And most understand their political game plan. They take care of their own at all cost and are unapologetic. I respect them politically for being loyal and committed to their racial group. My problem is with Black elected officials who seem to have absolutely no loyalty or commitment to anything Black. These are elected officials who probably have the chance to help their communities, but don’t. And they rarely fight with any sense of urgency or diligence for Black causes. It’s almost like they can take it or leave it. And most have left it on the table for others to feed their communities and families. This is why Chicago has the highest Black unemployment because there are no Black enterprises being built to hire their own community. We have situations like what was highlighted in the health industry recently in Cook County, where Blacks got nearly zero contracts to provide goods and services to the county health system. And city contracts are nearly nonexistent and Illinois has also been negligent in their obligation to assist underserved communities to win or even bid on multimillion-dollar contracts. The lack of professional opportunities falls squarely on the doorsteps of Black elected operatives who refuse to risk their political careers to fight on behalf of Black progress. What’s absolutely sickening is that Chicago, as well as Illinois, for that matter, has several dozen Black elected officials holding powerful, political posts. They sit on commissions or advisory boards, councils or whatever you call these feel-good appointments.

www.chicagodefender.com

But the Black business community is still suffering from the lack of contracts, and in some cases, there are no contracts being awarded at all to Blacks. Do Black elected officials want their communities to starve? And let me express that this is not about good people who hold these political positions. Because I personally know a handful of Black elected officials who are fantastic individuals, whom I would invite to my home and allow to spend time with my kid. But this is not about good people, it’s about great policy, and responsible procedures that assist in Black folks getting fair and equal opportunities in government to advance their careers and businesses. These are the people who we vote for. When we vote for elected officials, we expect them to operate in the best interest of the communities that they’ve sworn to represent. And let us go to the premise that most politicians use to defend their horrible positions. They say that Black people don’t vote! Really, then ask the ones who are currently sitting in seats of political power--how did they get there? They didn’t fill out applications and wait for an employer to hire them! They didn’t win their seat through a raffle. People voted for them to hold public office! I would agree, it’s unfortunate that more people don’t participate in the electoral process - Black or others. But incumbents are happy because most would not retain their positions if more people voted. Black people vote! The problem is that they continue to vote for the wrong person. Therefore, to keep saying that communities of color don’t vote is beside the point. The issue is, are elected officials in our community doing their jobs? Are you really asking for more people to vote before you’ll help the people who did vote for you? I have become distraught about my elected officials, today. Especially when I see nonblacks working throughout my hood on simple projects like putting white lines on the street after new pavement has been laid. This is disgusting! You’re telling me that Black men can’t even draw crooked lines on the concrete? Each Black elected official should be extremely embarrassed to know that they reside in communities that see Black men unemployed--not able to feed their families! The White boys may be not be endorsing Blacks to sit at the table of negotiation, but clearly, Black people are not even asking their own communities to come sit at the table when there is a seat actively available. I’m so mad that it hurts to even see Black politicians in most cases. Again, I really like some of them, personally, but professionally, I’m sick! Carl D. Lynn Whitfield: Passion and Purpose By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer The entertainment world has been blessed with some phenomenal talent throughout the decades, but as many cross over the threshold of fame, very few stay standing in the spotlight. Lynn Whitfield knew at 5 years old that she wanted to experience the power of the stage—the allure of acting. Growing up in Baton Rouge, La., the eldest of four siblings—her grandmother would sneak her off to the latenight movie. It was there she knew she wanted to make people laugh and cry. Encouraged by her family, her father a dentist and mother—Whitfield went on to attend Howard University, becoming a third generation graduate and earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts. The theater community fit her like a glove, studying and taking on roles with the Black Repertory Company in Washington, D.C. and relocating to New York City to perform on off-Broadway productions. She would film her debut in the cult comedy “Doctor Detroit” starring Dan Aykroyd, which would lead to supporting roles in “Silverado,” “The Slugger’s Wife,” and “The Women of Brewster Place” in the 1980’s. As her face became familiar in both film and television, the starring role of “The Josephine Baker Story” would catapult her career as a household name. The HBO miniseries would earn Whitfield primetime Emmy, Golden Globe nomination and NAACP Image Awards for an Actress in a Television Movie, Mini-series or Drama. Earning HBO some of the highest ratings at the time and opening the door for other Black actresses to also star in leading roles for the network, Whitfield never doubted her ability to carry such a high-profile role. “There was never a question in mind. I just felt this was my opportunity, that I was pleading to let people see more of what I had to offer as an actress, as someone who could entertain as an artist. I was so grateful to do it. Out of that, the director and I got married, I had my daughter Grace,” she said. “Had my baby, gained the respect and started to build a fan base from that. So, it’s a whole lot

Lynn Whitfield of ‘thank yous’ and gratitude. The experience afforded me to establish myself as a reliable actress,” says Whitfield. Since then, Whitfield has taken on numerous roles, sharing the screen with some the best talent in Hollywood from “A Thin Line Between Love and Hate,” “Eve’s Bayou,” “Head of State,” “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion” to countless others. “If I feel like I can add more to the faucets to the character, if the story is good of course. If I feel like it has legs to be entertaining and gain an audience... But, consistently I try to choose—sometimes it’s ‘please may I have this part?’.” She says she enjoys playing women who “feel like I can make even more interesting.” “I think dimensions are so important to characters. If I can add to the story, layering the story—laying the character—looks like I can score in it. Do something that will be memorable...” Currently, her stellar performance on OWN’s drama series “Greenleaf” as the role of Lady Mae Greenleaf keeps Black twitter wagging as she personifies the wife and matriarch of one of the South’s prominent ministers. “Oprah saw or felt that I was the right person for it and that gave me pause. I looked at it a certain way because she said she could only hear my voice in it. This is what I heard through the line producer.” In its second season, Whitfield says there was no particular first lady she tried to mimic in real life. She explains, “The fact that I know so many great

women who sometimes get a bad label.... Be labeled, the ‘b’ word or ‘controlling’. I believe that many women who can evolve (not that we can evolve because we’re queens anyway) but having a kingdom that they want to defend is a very interesting portrayal—an interesting character to portray so I see Lady Mae as a queen.” Having Southern roots, Whitfield grew up in an educated and modest family where community service was interwoven into history. Her advocacy for women’s and African American civil liberties made her an active participant on the campaign trail for both President Obama and later, Secretary Hillary Clinton. “People would come knock on his door and say, ‘Dr. Butler I’m sick.’ I would see him [my father] serve the community. I would see him get paid and barter for services and be owed a lot of money, but his doctoring was in service to the community. My mom and my aunt were very active in the NAACP. I came from a family of pontificating. We would sit around the kitchen table and have a lot of political and philosophical conversations about where we were. I grew up around people who were aware that you’re supposed to serve. It was a part of my training.” Whether she’s having a heart-to-heart with her daughter Grace or speaking to students finding their way through life, Whitfield advises them to be “accountable for what you say you’re going to do.” With the platform of cyber space, she believes young people have done an incredible job having a voice. But, she says it helps to lead by example. “I have a need to be connected to what’s going on. I can’t isolate myself from what’s happening in this country. I can’t isolate myself from what’s happening in the Black community. I can’t isolate myself from what’s going on with women in this country now. We’re going through a really tough time right now, but I really love my country.” The five-time NAACP Image Award recipient recently wrapped up filming on “Nappily Ever After” co-starring Sanaa Lathan, and was recently honored in December at this year’s Café Mocha Radio “Salute Her” Luncheon in Chicago. Grateful for the flow of work as an actress, she’s not daunted by the glamour or glare of the industry. It’s the people who approach her on the street who she’s most impressed by. “So often, I’m asked not ‘can I take a picture?’, but ‘can I have a hug?’ I never turn down a hug. It puts a mirror up to me, not about me but about the gift that God gave me that I don’t think I made the most of, but I have definitely tried to do earnest work with.” She pauses and then says, “It just moves my heart that people were watching, people got it and I did something memorable that they carry with them. That means a lot.” THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

City.Life.Style Sammy: A Tribute to Sammy Davis, Jr. By Brenda and Rick McCain Let’s Play The comedian, actor, dancer, singer and social activist we knew as “Mr. Wonderful” has delighted our hearts over a span of six decades with his extraordinary talent. Sammy Davis, Jr. overcame rampant racism to establish himself as an entertainment legend. “Sammy: A Tribute To Sammy Davis, Jr.” took audiences on a journey at the Black Ensemble Theater of this iconic figure who paved the way for so many other African Americans in show biz! The production told the story of the rise of Sammy Davis, Jr. (Michael Adkins) from where it all started in Vaudeville to his success in Las Vegas with “The Rat Pack.” Frank Sinatra (Nathan Cooper) and Dean Martin (Mark Yacullo) dubbed Sammy Davis, Jr. “Mister Show Business.” Cooper and Yacullo as Sinatra and Martin pulled off a decent simulation of the duo. Michael Adkins played the young Sammy and it would have been nice to see the three together singing one of their old songs. “Sammy” also took a look at the harsh racism that one of the greatest entertainers in the world had to endure in the military and at the very hotel of the nightclubs he performed at in Las Vegas. Despite what appeared to be a free-swinging playboy lifestyle, Mr. Davis endured a lifetime of racial prejudice. This unjust reality led Davis to use his fame for political means. He was active in the Civil Rights Movement, participating in the 1963 March on Washington and refusing to perform at racially segregated nightclubs, for which he is recognized with helping integrate in Las Vegas and Miami Beach. The tribute also highlighted Davis’ life regarding his scandalous affair with bombshell actress Kim Novak, which took place in the 1950s; however, their relationship ended because of the harassment due to racial tension. Other women in Davis’ life who loved him were his mother Rosa Davis (Rhonda Preston), his second wife, May Britt (Emily Hawkins) and his third wife Altovis Davis (Kylah Williams). They shared through song. Although this was a nice touch to the tribute, we felt that it didn’t add much validity. We were left wondering was this a musical tribute or a musical play. The production seemed to have picked up briefly when Davis’ second wife decided to leave him. The actual dialogue between May Britt and Davis about her leaving made the tribute more interesting. It provided us with a touching portrayal of how May must have felt about Davis’ affairs with other women. Scenes like this would have brought more intimacy which could have drawn the audience more into the story. This kind of storyline balanced with Davis’ extraordinary music and talent would make this an exceptional performance; however, this little snippet that captured the personal side of “Mr. Wonderful” only left you wanting more! One actor in particular who embodied the very essence of Davis was Kenny DaTHE CHICAGO DEFENDER

vis as Sammy Davis, Sr. His ability to sing and move like Sammy (during his tribute) made you think that Sammy Davis, Jr. was actually on the stage. Kenny played Davis before, and you can genuinely tell he put in the work. Black Ensemble would be wise to rewrite this Tribute to include more of Kenny Davis. He is the one who will bring people out to see this tribute. Emily Hawkins, Trequon Tate, and Rhonda Preston, to name a few, did a good job with their singing. However, I am an old crooner myself, and a pretty good one. Therefore, I think I can speak for the audience when I say this: I too want to listen to those Sammy songs as Sammy sang them. Tributes are lovely when others attempt to sing the songs that famous people once sang. I (Rick McCain) am a purist when it comes to singing those songs that greats once have sung. You got to either do them justice or just don’t sing them. This is where I again believe Black Ensemble could have used Kenny Davis. In my opinion, he is the star in this performance, and he needs to shine. Director Daryl D. Brooks gave us another fact-based production of a legendary icon that challenged us to take a look at our own lives to understand who we are, and what makes us firm in the face of adversity. Brooks, the writer, and director of this tribute do a respectable job telling the story of Sammy Davis, but we would have liked to have seen a little more acting and less narration in the storyline of Davis. Sammy Davis, Jr.’s life was complicated yet fascinating, to say the least; this man rises to success while encountering so many hurdles that even the man himself said, “Being a star has made it possible for me to get insulted in places where the average Negro could never hope to get insulted.” Lastly, if you are going to talk about Sammy, you have to include the name Sinatra. Like it or not during those times when Blacks were not even considered equal to Whites, Sinatra paved the way for Sammy to be the star he is today. We can’t speak against racism without thanking those like Sinatra who just saw real talent. We recommend that you come out and support this play to understand the life of a great performer who entertained us with such songs as “I’ve Gotta Be Me,” “Candy Man” and “Ain’t That A Kick In The Head” and “Mr. Bojangles,” as well as some movie favorites as “Ocean 11” and “Robin and the 7 Hoods!” The Cast Includes: Michael Adkins (Sammy Davis Jr.) Kenny Davis (Sammy Davis Sr.) Dwight Neal (Ensemble Member) Rueben D. Echoles (Will Mastin) Rhonda Preston (Rosa Davis) Nathan Cooper (Frank Sinatra) Mark Yacullo (Dean Martin) Emily Hawkins (May Britt) Kylah Williams (Altovis Davis) Trequon Tate (George Johnson) As well as ensemble members Linnea Norwood and Brian Boler. www.chicagodefender.com

Marsha Ambrosius: Carving Out Her Niche By Mary L. Datcher Defender Sr. Staff Writer Breaking out on the music scene as part of the soulful duo Floetry in 2001, Marsha Ambrosius wasn’t trying to develop her passion because she knew it was already there. Joining forces with high school friend, Natalie Stewart known as the The Floacist, to add her poetry for a song she penned and submitted to her publishers. “For me, I’ve always written songs, I’ve always produced. I had this magical and remarkable idea lending this poetry to my work. I called the Floacist and said, ‘I want you to put some poetry to a song I had, ‘Fantasize’. We did, and we performed it. It took a life form of its own. It was no development; the development was letting people see it and experience it,” she said. “I feel that’s why it was such a powerful connection as two very young, Black women standing there speaking truth. Grown woman stuff that we shouldn’t be even saying. Those songs that I wrote—wow! Back then, the perspective I had as a 22year old is nothing like what the 22-year olds are talking about right now.” Ambrosius’ unique sound and songwriting skills led her to writing the hit song “Butterflies” for Michael Jackson for his “Invincible” in 2001. Relocating to Philadelphia, both Ambrosius and Stewart would eventually land a record label contract with DreamWorks where they would produce two full lengths “Floetic” and “Flo’Ology” and a live album, Floacism. Hit songs from Floetic, “Say Yes” and “Getting Late,” would create a successful and refreshing movement of Neo Soul and Spoken Word while carving 12 January 3 - 9, 2018

Ambrosius a place among then-break out artists Jill Scott. She would embark on a solo career, in 2009 releasing her debut album, “Late Nights & Early Mornings” released on J Records. “Friends and Lovers” would follow along with several collaborations including features with Busta Rhymes, Ne-Yo, Common, Wale, Talib Kweli, Daley, The Robert Glasper Experiment and many others. Her musical style and diversity in collaborative projects stems back to her hometown in London. “Growing up in Liverpool, I’ve had the luxury of listening to everything including Beatles. But they were hometown heroes. Even though it was Beatlemania to the rest of the world, they were just kids from up the street. My grandmother used to babysit Ringo, had his drumsticks still in the house. It was local for us,” she said. “So, my influence was listening to my mother’s extensive vinyl collection which ranged from Larry Graham, Grand Central Station to Stevie Dan, Duran Duran, Queen, Marvin Gaye, Prince, Michael Jackson—your regular Soul and Funkadelic stuff.” As her repertoire of music grew so did her admiration for female vocalists such as Patrice Rushen and Teena Marie tapping into her mother’s extensive musical library, I was just open. She said it was a magical time for music. “That was the UK during the 1970’s and 1980’s, we were unafraid to say something was borrowed or lent or influenced because we were a melting pot of all of these different cultures. Growing up being Black in Britain, I think that was a strong and significant time then as it is today,” she said. The impact of American Black music in the UK is not a secret having music legends such as The Beatles, The www.chicagodefender.com

Rolling Stones and others pay homage to its creators— hearing it throughout their own catalog today. Another wave of British creators has taken flight from the Soul music scene, flipping the script in the States. But, Ambrosius feels although White artists are influenced by the genre, there will always be a distinct difference in styles. “I think it’s the same now. It’s why Adele can be Adele and Jasmine Sullivan can be Jasmine Sullivan. When I grew up, I didn’t see color in the music. Not through music, I understood in life. In music, it was good, or it was bad. I just loved good songs. That could be anything from a soft rock ballad like The Journey, The Eagles or “Please Don’t Go” by Chicago or EWF’s “Reasons”. It wasn’t Black or White—it was music.” She explains, “I feel like even today, you just have to know if it’s what’s good or bad. The whole Black and White thing comes into it when there’s these fine lines where things are borrowed but not acknowledged. Back then, we used to acknowledge its creators. Now, it’s they’re getting away with the most—whatever that is.” As she prepares for her fifth studio album, titled “NYLA”, she’s excited to share her next project and preparing for touring in early 2018. A wife and new mother of a little girl, she’s taking it all in stride as she launches a new chapter in her life. She remembers to listen to the words of wisdom from her mother regarding maternal instincts and the musical bond she shares with her father when they compare old and new songs. Although Ambrosius has lived in the U.S. for a great deal of her professional musical career, the kid from the working-class community of South London continues to cultivate her craft as a vocalist and songwriter. “I continue to work hard. I continue to work on me. I don’t take anything for granted. Nothing is for certain. I allow myself to be open to new challenges and new things. I feel my signature stamp happens because I refuse to not acknowledge who it is when it happens. ‘Oh, yeah that’s Marsha.’ Only me and no one else,” she said. “That is rare. I never marked myself as an exceptional singer but I’m exceptional at these harmonies, these transitions, these weird inflections, the sync strings sound that I would make. That’s what I decided to master, that’s what I concentrate on. I wanted to mimic being an instrument. When I play me, it’s me.” THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

The challenge for the competing students is to improve the way people find, transport, use or dispose of water. Prior to the competition, Commissioner Steele was invited as a Subject Matter Expert to visit the Wadsworth FIRST® LEGO® League Science class team. During her visit she provided information about the many services provided by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) of Greater Chicago. Commissioner Steele provided the students and teachers with informational brochures about Healthy Waterways, Drug-Free Drains, Too Cute to Pollute, It’s a Toilet…Not a Trashcan, Understanding Your Sewer, Overflow Action Days, Chicago Area Waterway System, and Tunnel and Reservoir Plan and more. The Wadsworth students provided Commissioner Steele with a pre- competition demonstration of their Robot Game entry and the many water related goals the Robot had to accomplish to garner the maximum points during the competition. Women are still under-represented in various fields, including Science, where the glass ceiling is still a reality. 14 January 3 - 9, 2018

Steele observes the team.

Steele shares information with students. Nowadays, barely 28 percent of researchers are women. “As a chemist and environmentalist in my first term on the MWRD Board, I continue to work tirelessly to promote careers in STEM related fields for women, minorities and youth, as well as remain a strong advocate for keeping our environment safe and clean,” said MWRD Commissioner Kari K. Steele. During Commission Steele’s visit at James Wadsworth STEM Elementary School, she also shared insightful information about her more than 11 years of experience working as a Chemist. She has worked at the Jardine Water Purification Plant (as a water chemist), MWRD (as a water sampler and lab technician) and L’Oréal (as a lab techniwww.chicagodefender.com

It is encouraged that families and communities come together to highlight and support the good work that is being accomplished in classrooms by students who are working constructively together to showcase their aptitude and positive attitude towards learning, which is the best way to prepare them for a productive, prosperous and bright future. West vs. Coates By Aristarchus Patrinos Defender Guest Columnist I am not ashamed to admit that I was giddy on a tabloid level, seeing my former Professor Cornel West get into it with National Book Award winner Ta-Nehisi Coates. In the 1990’s, Cornel West was the man. Black people liked him. To White liberals, he was the reigning “magic negro of letters.” Best sellers. Unbelievable honorariums. A University Professorship at Harvard, bringing a generous stipend and the ability to teach at any school at the University. But as we know, the public is fickle, and the flavor of the month changes. Moreover, West’s criticism of Obama alienated him from many people, not just “the powers that be,” but also Black Americans who love Barack and Michelle. In contrast, Coates jumped on the Obama train, and road it to glory. God bless him. Folks like Cornel West will have to face sooner or later that Barack Obama has surpassed Martin Luther King as far as the love of Black folks today. Black people still love Dr. King, but Barack and Michelle have eclipsed him. Martin Luther King reigned supreme in the hearts of Black people for over 50 years, but times change. Was Dr. King really a greater man than Booker T. Washington or Frederick Douglass? I don’t think so. Is Barack Obama a greater man than King? I don’t think so. Times change. And new models of greatness emerge. New heroes arise. Also, people tend to be attached to what they grew up with. They always have a special fond-

ness for the music and movies that were popular when they were young. West grew up with King, so he has a special attachment to his legacy. King was a special hero to West. For the high school students that I teach in the public schools of Philadelphia, it’s all about Barack and Michelle. They hardly even remember a world before Barack Obama was President. I always had a feeling that some of the criticism for Obama by Black public intellectuals who were prominent before the rise of Obama was a product of envy and resentment. Obama’s star shone so bright that it eclipsed all other Black American public figures with a luster that I had never witnessed, nor am likely to see again. Certainly not since the time of Martin Luther King. Perhaps not since the time of Booker T. Washington or even Frederick Douglass, has one Afro-American leader made all the others seem so irrelevant. I do agree with certain individual criticisms made by West, but not the tone or the overall thrust. Coates’ writing does at times make Black people seem like pathetic passive creatures under the all mighty yoke of the White man. And I do think that his writing feeds into a kind of White liberal fancy that Black people gained their political freedom primarily owing to the benevolence of good White folk, like themselves, of course. The fact is that I find myself in disagreement with many of Coates’ opinions, and I think it is because we view the ingredients and obstacles to Black progress very differently. Coates appears to view the primary obstacles to Black progress as being the constraints posed by White supremacy. In contrast, I don’t think we are doing as much as we can as a people to maximize our potential within these constraints. Here, I’m not talking about individuals, because many individual Black people are successful and doing amazing things. I’m talking on a macro-level. White American Baby Boomers will leave their children

approximately $13 trillion dollars in wealth overall when they die. Black Boomers will leave their children debts. Black folks on a macro-level are not demonstrating the skills of passing on capital inter-generationally. Moreover, the problem is not limited to passing on financial capital to the next generations, but also human capital. Teaching for a few years in Philadelphia Charter and public high schools has revised many of my opinions about problems in Black civil society. Most of these schools are practically 100 percent Black in their student body. To begin, the minimal academic skill level of such a large fraction of these students is staggering. When I think about the competition out there, it’s hard to fathom how many of these young people can compete in the adult working world. They have computers in almost every classroom, but when it comes to information technology, they are almost strictly consumers, they do not have real computer skills. I am convinced that the primary reason for the difficulties in these classrooms is owing to a failure of these students to come into school with sufficient human capital. They haven’t been taught properly at home. On the whole, they have been taught little or no academic skills, nor a “love of learning.” More importantly, they come in with substantial moral deficiencies, namely, they have not been taught a proper respect for authority. This is particularly true with the boys. Many of the girls will be OK, I think, but I worry about the male students. The consequence is that it makes it very difficult to pass on knowledge. Some teachers are better than others, and many individual students are good, but on a macro-level, they are not developing enough skills to compete, especially the boys. We are not developing enough skills to compete as a people. Immigrant children who don’t even continued on page 16

To Chicago With Love By Dahomy Dockery

A

mutual friend contacted me to inform me that you were not doing well. Everything heard was negative and I was overcome with grief. I am not going to lie, it gave me some cause for concern. I was told that you have become violent, cold, aggressive, and that no one is safe from your death grip. It is hard to hear of you in this manner because, I only have the fondest memories of you. First, I would like for you to know that the distance that has grown between us was caused by me wanting to explore. What I wanted, what I needed, had to be discovered alone. Please, know that you were at the forefront of my mind and I wanted nothing more than to complete my quest within your loving embrace. Admittedly, it was selfish of me to assume that you would wait patiently for me. Especially, when you consider that I left as quickly as a thief in the night. It was my childish attempt to avoid the unpleasantness of heartbreak. With you, I have shared so many memories, those of which have changed my life for the better. You taught me that, proper preparation prevents poor performance and that it is always necessary to strive to overcome negative energy. You fostered my signature, take-no-shit attitude. You are the reason that I wanted to explore the world. You are the reason that I love to write and create. I absorbed your worldliness and was driven to see the things that influenced you and made you one of a kind. I am grateful for the memory of the night we partied

in the South Loop and watched Afrika Bambaataa spin us into delirium. Afterwards, we partook in the finest of herbs with legendary DJ, Kool Herc. Who would have thought that because of you I would have met one of Hip Hop’s founding fathers? You sat patiently as I played with the dreadlock, located on the left side of his head, that had begun to splinter into two more locks. I was mesmerized, and you never allowed jealousy to dampen my excitement. Summertime, with you, was always the best. We devoured the most magnificent skyline my eyes have ever beheld. The sounds of House music, the Blues, Jazz, and Hip Hop blasting from various corners of Hyde Park were intoxicating. The smells of the ethnic foods awakened in me an audacious hunger. Do you remember how we would frequent Cholie’s for the $2 lunch special that included a slice of pizza and a canned pop? Or how we would argue over which Harold’s was the best? Do you recall the night that I tripped chasing the elotero on 63rd and Western? I was not embarrassed because the elote was worth the stumble. You showed me landmarks of the Underground Railroad, Prohibition, and the homes of Gwendolyn Brooks and the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan. Sometimes, a chance encounter with a congressman, who would become the first African American president of the United States would occur. Chicago, I have loved you since 1986 and I will always love you! In me, you created a fearless fighter. Because of you, I have an absurd amount of independence. In me, you fashioned a fierce competitor. With all these memories, I find it hard to believe that others are unable to see your beauty as I see it. Thank you, for molding me into the woman that I am and for believing in the woman I will become.

COMMUNITY Truth or Tale: Are Allegations of Today Retribution or the New WMD? By Santura Pegram Defender Guest Columnist Since October 2017 more than 90...and still increasing...high-profile celebrities throughout the U.S. have been accused of everything from sexual harassment to blatant rape to other forms of misconduct that have rocked every sector from Hollywood to politics to corporate America and beyond. And, at the rate these allegations seem to be popping up faster than pimples on the face of a teenager such commentary are not showSantura Pegram ing signs of slowing down anytime soon. That is, until increasing numbers of such cases are either proven to be malicious lies used as strategic ploys to acquire an easy payday; mean-spirited attempts by some who have an axe to grind against another individual(s) who they feel a need to seek damaging retribution are exposed, or male victims begin stepping forward with their own allegations of abuse by women towards men. Nevertheless, the question remains: are today’s sudden claims of misconduct a form of “chickens finally coming home to roost” or are they merely one of the new weapons of mass destruction (WMD) for a greed-natured and bitter-driven society? Undoubtedly, there are countless instances in which males in authoritative roles have blatantly misused their positions for their own foolish satisfaction. And, there should be consequences for such immoral behavior as rape or employment-opportunities-and-job security-for-sex patronage arrangements that can be legitimately proven. Renown poet W.H. Auden once quipped, “I and the public know what all schoolchildren learn, those to whom evil is done do evil in return.” However, according to many people in today’s day and time, one does not necessarily have to do anything wrong in terms of being physically harmful or threatening to someone else for an individual to suddenly turn on you and seek a wicked approach. Accordingly, one can be assured there are quite a few instances out there where females in management level positions (and some in lower level capacities too) have/ are committing similar types of sex-by-intimidation acts towards a male(s) in lower level positions as well. The difference being most men are seldom, if ever, going to verbalize - let alone acknowledge - that they have ever been accosted by a female supervisor to consider a sexual relationship with them. For most men, publicly speaking out about such an incident goes against the average male code. And, being that it is something that many males realize men in leadership positions have knowingly done towards women since the beginning of time, several men would likely not see a real issue with the same expectation/requirement being returned to them by women. At least not to the point of addressing it publicly unless it involves the loss of their job.

speak English as a first language are coming in and leaving black students behind. This problem, the failure to effectively pass on capital inter-generationally on a macro-level, both financial and human, is a major obstacle to the progress of Black civil society today. This is an issue that has plagued Black progress since emancipation. Whether it be the loss of today’s equivalent of hundreds of millions of dollars in the corruption scandal and collapse of the Freedman’s Bank, 16 January 3 - 9, 2018

Unfortunately, while what starts at the bottom often works its way to the top, situations also work in reverse as well. Likewise, a growing number of females living common lifestyles are beginning to abuse legitimate processes for their own good as well by attempting to either gain financially (such as aiming to have a child(ren) by and/or marrying a man with a decent-paying job and a few materialistic possessions), only to turn around and seek to walk away financially-set for a span of time if the relationship deteriorates soon thereafter. Although such short-sighted manners of thinking are not reflective of all women, it is becoming more common as reality show personalities have taken the place of respectable and value-embracing role models in the lives of young people. Oddly enough, other people (most often females) with vindictive or ulterior motives are now misusing the formality of police reports, TPO’s (temporary protective-restraining orders) and court systems in several states as legalized “get-back tactics” towards men who have angered them, discovered or revealed something embarrassing about them, or not conformed to their expectations. Situations have been made worse by the fact that, unlike women, males accused of most infractions today have no public voice advocating for their presumed innocence until proven guilty. Statistics reveal interesting points of thought. For example, up until the date of this story in the City of Atlanta, Ga. (excluding other neighboring cities) the Atlanta Police Department cited the following 2016 and 2017 combined year-to-date numbers of sexual misconduct reports: •29 - Forcible Rape Attempts •57 - Prostitution •450 - Rape By Force •1,961 - Sex Offenses (ranging from Solicitation, Sexual Battery/Aggravated Sexual Battery, Sodomy, Other Sex-related offenses, etc.) There were also 174 reports of Stalking (which is a Family Violence charge – not a sex-related offense) in the City of Atlanta for this period - 2016 and 2017. * (Statistics provided by Atlanta Police Department Office of Public Affairs). Those figures only reflect the number of alleged criminal incidents reported/filed with the City of Atlanta police – not convictions, guilty pleas, dismissals or civil case incidents. For the larger region of Fulton County, Ga., the following 2016 and 2017 combined year-to-date numbers of sexual misconduct reports and criminal stalking reports revealed:

It should be noted that while the city police department in Atlanta and the Fulton County DA’s Office in Atlanta cooperated with providing pertinent data for this story, governmental departments in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Miami failed to do so. What is most disturbing about the process of attempting to seek overall statistics for select cities/counties is how such governmental entities are quick to claim support for transparency. Yet, no Clerk of Court representative and no Superior Court administrator (who are the legal custodian of public records) in the four counties (Miami-Dade County, Fla; Cook County-Chicago, Ill; Los Angeles County, Calif. and Fulton County, Ga.) in the four states that were selected was receptive to share such vital public information in the form of the actual numbers of cases involving sexual misconduct and stalking-harassment allegations or claimed to have antiquated systems incapable of tracking specific allegations/ cases. Contrarily, when malicious-thinking females (and/or males too for that matter) who have been quick to cry wolf, make bogus police reports, and seek career-damaging restraining orders against a former significant other or someone else who has angered them suddenly begin being sued for defamation of character and having criminal charges filed against them for false accusations and wasting the time of law enforcement figures who handle such cases, such allegations will likely begin to decline. And, not to ignore overlooked factors people of today can be assured of if destructive claims continue to persist in America. According to the comments expressed by many guys since the rise in female against male allegations - from the personal level, such situations hinder an already-complicated dating process because increasing numbers of women may find it more cumbersome attempting to gain the trust of an ideal mate (as more men will likely become wary of delving too deep with a woman). And, on a professional level, increasing numbers of males may find it uncomfortable working with and/or around females due to fear of what could potentially occur from such encounters. After all, for every action there is a re-action. Sounds like a need for a real zero tolerance policy and consequences against false accusers. * Santura Pegram is a freelance writer and business professional. or the failure of many freedmen to pass on the industrial skills they had learned during slavery to the next generation. In his fascinating biography of Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington speaks of how for the purposes of exploitation, during slavery, most of the skilled tradesman in the South were slaves. Moreover, that there was an established structure of passing on these skills across generations, within the plantation system. At the time of emancipation, the freedmen were the most skilled laborers in the South, both with respect to the industrial trades and agriculture, particularly the highly profitable cash

crops. But many of these skills were never passed on to the next generation after emancipation. A lot of human capital was lost. Washington gives an example of how during slavery, most of the best tailors in the South were slaves. Yet, twenty years after emancipation, he had great difficulty finding one educated Black tailor to teach at Tuskegee. His observations about the failure of the freedmen to pass on their industrial skills inter-generationally seems to have been part of Washington’s inspiration for his famous program of “Industrial Education.” Aristarchus Patrinos is a teacher in Philadelphia, Pa.

By Serena Gordon HealthDay News It’s that time of year again. People are rushing to buy gym memberships and cleaning out kitchen cabinets, swearing that this year will be the year they follow through on their resolution to lose weight. But reaching that goal doesn’t require a complete lifestyle overhaul. Small steps can make a big difference in your body and health. Here are eight ways to get started: • Break it down. No matter how much you have to lose, changing your lifestyle to lose weight can seem overwhelming. So, don’t look at it all at once, advises nutritionist Samantha Heller from NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. “Look at it one plate at a time, or even one choice at a time, but start right now, and by this time next month, you’ll see good changes,” she said. Instead of thinking about how you need to lose 40 pounds, figure out what 5 percent of your body weight is. For a 180-pound person, it’s 9 pounds. “If you lose 5 percent of your body weight, you can significantly decrease your risk of many diseases, like prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, heart disease. You lower your blood pressure, cholesterol and A1C [a long-term measurement of blood sugar levels], and it’s so much less overwhelming to think about,” Heller noted. • Strive for a negative calorie balance. For years, you’ve probably heard that to lose a pound, you need to eat 3,500 fewer calories (the number of calories in a pound), but research has shown that it’s not necessarily that simple. Nutritionist Maudene Nelson from Columbia University Health in New York City said, “It works mathematically, but it doesn’t work physiologically. The body defends its weight,” she explained. But you do need a negative calorie balance to lose weight -- that means you need to take in fewer calories than you use in activity and exercise to lose weight. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

8 Small Changes for a Slimmer You in 2018 Both Nelson and Heller said very low-calorie diets don’t work in the long term because the body goes into starvation mode. “You don’t want to lose weight too quickly, because it scares the body into thinking there’s no food available,” Heller said. • Plate it. Nelson loves the simplicity of the plate method. Half of your plate should be vegetables, one quarter is protein and one quarter is starch. If you finish your plate, and you’re still hungry, she said be sure to refill your plate in the same way. “Don’t just refill on the mac n’ cheese,” she advised. In the morning, you can substitute fruit for the veggies. • Identify trouble times. Nelson asks her clients to think about the time of day they have the most trouble with food. Is it the time just before dinner when the kids are clamoring for food and you’re starving and so tired you don’t feel like cooking, so you stop at the fast-food drive-thru? Or is it at night when the house has quieted down and you can finally sit down, maybe with a glass of wine and late-night snack? “In these times of day, it’s hard to think about how many calories you’re eating. These are times you don’t want to stop and think about self-denial. So plan for these times. Have healthy snacks ready. Make sure you have ingredients for a quick meal in the fridge so you don’t have to rely on fast-food,” Nelson suggested. • Add protein to every meal. Protein helps keep your blood sugar levels from spiking and then crashing. Without at least a little protein in your meal, you’ll be hungry soon after eating because of a fast rise and fall in your www.chicagodefender.com

blood sugar. And, Heller said, be sure to have protein at breakfast, too. “Having protein in the morning can really set the stage for a better day -- whether it’s eggs or yogurt, nut butter on whole grain toast or apple slices, or even leftovers from the night before,” she explained. • Track it. Both Heller and Nelson said one of the most important things you can do for losing weight is keeping track of the food you eat. “It’s not a sexy or exciting thing to do, but it can be informative and helpful,” Heller said, adding that many people are surprised when they write down every bite they take at how much they actually do eat in a day. A food diary can be done with paper and pencil, or you can put technology to work because there are lots of apps for the phone. Examples include myfitnesspal, fitday and seehowyoueat (an app that lets you use pictures to keep your diary). “You can use your food tracker to see what happened when you did well, or on days you didn’t. If you over-eat one night, you can look back and see that maybe you skipped lunch and were starving. You can use it as a learning tool for the next time,” Heller said. • Don’t drink your calories. Both experts said people often get empty calories from soda and juice. “It’s just not worth it to drink your calories,” Nelson said. What about adult beverages, such as wine and beer? Nelson said those can be considered part of the plate method. Each drink replaces a starch from your plate. • Rewards. Nelson said to set yourself up for success by planning rewards. Whether it’s for walking a mile, or for tracking your meals for a week, give yourself more than a pat on the back. It doesn’t have to be a big treat -- maybe you could buy that magazine you enjoy but usually don’t purchase, or a special body lotion because it’s pricier than what you normally spend. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

SPORTS #TheBIGS Presents: This Week’s Top 5 High School Hoopers By Eugene McIntosh & Terrence Tomlin Sports by #TheBIGS

Orr Seniors Raekwaon Drake and Dannie Smith (#23) meet Whitney Young’s Kennen Jones at the basket for the block at the Proviso West Holiday Tournament (John L. Alexander/The Bigs Visuals)

Spartans Crowned Champs, Make Statement at Proviso West Holiday Tournament By Terrence Tomlin & Eugene McIntosh Sports by #TheBIGS Holiday tournament time on the Chicago basketball scene is a time for making statements and at the 57th Annual Proviso West Holiday Tournament, the Orr Spartans made a statement loud and clear: They will be a force to be reckoned with come city playoffs time. With strong wins over Morton, Fenwick and Uplift, the Spartans took out the defending 4A Champions Whitney Young 77-62 to claim the Proviso West Holiday tournament Championship this past Saturday. Now sitting with a 12-2 record with only one of those losses coming in state, Orr coach Lou Adams says the Spartans are hitting a groove. “When the season started, we were the number one team in the state on paper and I think it went to our head. But now we are just playing Spartan basketball, playing defense and rebounding, doing what we gotta do to win basketball games.” And with their big win over perennial powerhouse Whitney THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Young for the PWHT Championship, Lou Adams wants it to be known that their 2A classification is based on enrollment, not talent. “We’re a 2A team because of our enrollment...we don’t have 2A basketball players... we have 4A/5A basketball players. They can play the game of basketball.” Led by senior Raekwon Drake, who was crowned MVP of the tournament after his 22pts & 11 rebound performance in the Championship game, the Spartans are loaded with talent at each position. Senior point guard Chase Adams who coach Lou Adams calls “a coach on the floor” and Emmanuel O’Neal are arguably one of the best backcourts in the city while senior forward Dannie Smith (22pts & 12rebs in Championship game) echoes his coaches sentiments when it comes to the passion he has to prove to the rest of Chicago that Orr is not to be slept on. “Everybody thinks we can’t beat Simeon, Morgan Park or Whitney Young. We coming though!” One thing’s for sure is that the Spartans are on a mission and the city is officially on notice. Orr is for real! www.chicagodefender.com

HAPPY NEW YEAR! After a week of top notch holiday tournament action, CPS schools Simeon, Orr, Morgan Park and Corliss came out victorious at Pontiac, Proviso West, The Big Dipper at Rich Central and The Christmas Classic in Effingham. The BIGS Top 5 Hoopers were on display and they gave the people what they paid for so it’s only right that we shakeup the rankings...rock with us! 1- Talen Horton-Tucker (Sr- Simeon) - “Talow” scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a 67-48 Simeon win over Curie in the Championship game at the Pontiac Holiday Tournament. He was named tournament MVP and helped coach Robert Smith win his ninth Pontiac title, a tournament record. He’s versatile and can do it all. Simeon will travel to Memphis to play former NBA star Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway and his nationally ranked Memphis East team whom they lost to in the City of Palms Classic in Florida on Dec. 22. Last Week’s Rank- #1 2. Ayo Dosunmu (Sr- Morgan Park) - Ayo suffered a leg injury in the first round of the Big Dipper after he had 30 and 10 in a Morgan Park win over Butler. Congrats to Nick Irvin and his squad for getting the job done without 2 stars (Tamell Pearson-injury). Dosunmu let it be known that it’s not a game out here. He dropped a tournament record 60 points at the Tarkanian Classic and had 51 and 37 the 2 previous games. That’s hard to argue against...Last Week’s Rank- #2 3. Last Week’s Rank - #4 4. Javon Freeman (Sr- Whitney Young) “Vonno” and the Dolphins fell to Orr in the Proviso West championship. Freeman scored 23 points but it wasn’t enough to push the Dolphins over the hump. He’s extremely tough to stop in the open court and a tough defender but he’s gonna have to step his level of play up if Young is looking to repeat as 4A champs. Last Week’s Rank - #3 5. Messiah Jones (Sr- Simeon) - Messiah tweaked his ankle in the first game of the Pontiac tournament but that didn’t stop the Wolverines. He scored 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in their 19 point win over Curie in the championship. A win over Memphis East this weekend could push Simeon further up the national rankings.
