City News CRGE Releases Racial Justice Scorecard for Chicago City Council With less than 50 days remaining before the municipal elections, the Center for Racial and Gender Equity (CRGE) has released its Racial Justice Scorecard of the Chicago City Council. The guide is designed to serve as an informational resource for voters committed to advancing safety, opportunity and liberation for people of color, by electing candidates who reflect our communities, share our values and champion our self-interest. With the goal of improving the accountability, transparency and accessibility of municipal government, the report equips readers with a quantified assessment of the racial justice impact of the city council as a whole, as well as that of individual aldermen. To view the Racial Justice Scorecard, visit: http://bit.ly/CRGECityCouncil-

Scorecard CRGE based its grade of the full city council on an analysis of its legislative activities within the current aldermanic term. By applying a racial justice approach, the scorecard evaluates the city council’s actions on key policies that would either systemically benefit or harm Black Chicagoans. CRGE considered the city council’s performance on a wide range of issues, including police accountability, equitable economic investment, schools, workers rights and affordable housing. The city council’s failing score reflects its unwavering adherence to a longstanding agenda to further enrich an affluent and overwhelmingly White Chicago through the methodical subjugation, extraction, exploitation, and ultimate disposal of Black communities, the

CRGE said. While the city council passed several perfunctory reform measures in the area of workers rights, it altogether ignored the demands of Black constituents on issues related to police violence, economic disinvestment, inequitable schools, neighborhood displacement and housing injustice, according to the report. CRGE’s analysis of individual aldermanic performance exposes widespread racial apathy among a majority of city lawmakers who have remained silent on issues of social justice, complacent in the understanding that the support of their White constituents or affluent campaign donors are secured, so long as the city’s prevailing power structures remain unchallenged.

Mayoral Race Heats Up With Burke Charges Upon the recent charges of criminal extortion of long-time powerful alderman Ed Burke, fingers are pointing toward mayoral candidates. Candidate Paul Vallas issued a statement which said, “If Chicago is ever going to clean up its act and have a government worthy of its people, then mayoral candidates Toni Preckwinkle, Susana Mendoza, Gery Chico and Bill Daley should immediately withdraw their candidacies for mayor. “If we’re ever going to clean up City Hall and get Chicago working for the people again, we need to make a clean sweep of the corrupt machine and the typical way of doing things. “I’m running for Mayor to end this pay to play culture,” Vallas continued. Candidate Garry McCarthy listed the same four candidates in a statement he issued about Burke’s charges. He said the four were “all beneficiaries of the corruption that breeds in Chicago’s political system.” Candidate Dorothy Brown called for a thorough investigation into all of Preckwinkle’s campaign funds after Preckwinkle’s campaign updated its records and acknowledged a donation from Burke’s firm. Candidate Amara Enyia also released a statement: “News of Ald. Ed Burke’s indictment is a devastating reminder of Chicago’s long history of corruption within city government. Any political leader who will willingly extort his community for personal gain is not only a predator but a major fissure to democracy and an inhibitor of justice. ... “The people of Chicago deserve and expect the highest ethical standards from their elected officials. Ed Burke should

step down in his capacity as Alderman to make way for unbought, uncorrupted leadership that prioritizes community interests over the interests of big banks and the one-percent. All candidates and elected officials with connections to Ed Burke should immediately cut ties with his office. We need leadership that pushes back against the interests of a political machine that has long denied Chicago its

necessary political evolution.” Preckwinkle announced that she was returning the $116,000 raised for her by Burke last year. She is also calling for his resignation as 14th Ward alderman and committeeman. Burke has stepped down as Finance Committee Chairman, but he is still running for re-election as alderman.

Believe Black Women! It is in the humanization of others that we find the protection. By Tennille Power Special to the Defender The Lifetime Documentary series “Surviving R Kelly” has caught the attention of men, women and children across the nation and #SurvivingRKelly is exploding on all social media outlets. The selfnamed Pied Piper of R&B and self-proclaimed King of R&B has been exposed on a whole new level through the lens of Dream Hampton, producer of the Lifetime Documentary. If you are one of the few who have not watched it, and plan to, be prepared to hear some of the most horrific stories of domination, manipulation, domestic violence and sexual abuse you have ever heard in your life. The vivid recalling of stories of victim, after victim, after victim is overwhelming. Most of Kelly’s victims were underaged, starting with former R&B princess Aaliyah. One question that resounds repeatedly on social media outlets in response is, “Where were the parents?” As a sexual assault survivor, and domestic and sexual assault advocate, these questions serve to deflect from the main issue at hand, R Kelly was, and continues to be, the ADULT, who is fully responsible and accountable for his actions! What is a fair question to ask is “What type of culture do we live in that allows an adult male THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

to continue to prey on young girls and no one from the community, not one institution, intervenes on behalf of the victims? The answer is: We live in a rape culture where social and cultural norms define who is a victim, who is a perpetrator, who deserves to be saved and who gets abandoned. We as a collective community failed these girls and will continue to fail them even after this documentary UNLESS something changes. This is where our work begins! Part 5: The Missing Girls part of the documentary examines the stories of the young girls who met Kelly at various places, including outside of the criminal courthouse during Kelly’s trial for child pornography. Many people took to social media commentary asking “Where were the parents? Were the parents paid off?” The answer is simple, and yet complex: the parents were fully present, particularly with one family where the young woman is still living as an alleged hostage with R. Kelly. It is noted that families of the earlier victims were paid. Do we know the exact amounts and if money was given to all victims? No, and THIS point is actually irrelevant. The main point we need to focus time and energy on is how predatory behavior can happen literally right before the parents’ eyes. Let’s unpack: 1) This type of abuse occurs when the parents are uninformed

of rape culture, don’t understand rape culture and perpetuate it. The R Kelly case brought national attention. Unfortunately, people translated “Not Guilty” into “Innocent.” Post Trayvon Martin, we have learned the fall out of what Not Guilty really means. A Not Guilty verdict means there was not enough evidence to substantiate the crime indicted for. Innocence is not a factor. In this particular case, because the main witness, the 14-year-old in the video, did not testify, the case became complicated to produce a “Guilty” verdict. In addition, Kelly had a jury trial, composed of people who also are indoctrinated in a rape culture. But again, it does not mean innocent. The video STILL happened, it was presented in the case. It was proven underage sex and what were called “deviant” acts of pornography were shown. Yet, the ”NOT GUILTY” verdict caused many, including the parents of subsequent victims, to believe Kelly was innocent. Thus leading to the open door of abuse. Parents, we must stop the belief that what happened to HER (as we include a level of disgust in our voice) cannot happen to MY SON OR DAUGHTER. This mentality causes you to let your guard down, protective lenses are removed, and predators pounce on these opportunities. It is when you are not looking that they decided and www.chicagodefender.com

capture their prey. One family documented in the video took a family trip to an R Kelly concert. They believed that he was found NOT GUILTY, therefore, he must not have done anything wrong. THEIR DAUGHTER was not on the tape. THEIR DAUGHTER was not in the house. And now, they are fighting with every fiber in their being to rescue their daughter from R Kelly, whom she met at the concert. Her parents allowed Kelly to bring her on stage with him and escort her back behind stage. NEVER think, Parents, that IT CAN’T BE YOUR CHILD! Predators wait for an open moment. Don’t think that “THOSE GIRLS” or “THOSE BOYS” are the only ones. It is just that mentality that predators wait for. We must embrace our ancestral roots that all the children in the village are ours! It is in the humanization of others that we find the protection. 2) Parents, be aware of what your children are listening to and following on social media. Many of us grew up asking “Who are your people?” It is critical to know not who are your children’s friends, but their parents and the culture in which they live. One of the survivors, who told her story, recounted how she friended another girl on MySpace through Kelly’s fan page. She sought out the girl, befriended her, went to her house, gained access to her family. Her mother knew her, but didn’t know

the back story. Gratefully, through a mother’s unyielding persistence, she rescued her daughter. But it was through one person through a virtual community where she lost her daughter. KNOW the friends, because you need to know the agenda of the friendship. 3) Become educated on how and why rape culture exists. We are all indoctrinated in it! We are all victims of it, and can save ourselves by becoming educated! Each victim of Kelly thought he was innocent. Why? I believe Chance the Rapper said it best in an interview, “I didn’t believe the victims because they were Black women.” Historically, since our ancestors were kidnapped from our homeland, Black women’s bodies have been indispensable and for public consumption. Therefore, there is this subconscious, vicious belief that Black women can’t be raped. There were numerous victims before each victim of R Kelly. None of them were believed. The parents didn’t believe them. Therefore, the ground became fertile for them to become his next prey. Even the 35-year-old self-named SuperFan didn’t believe ANY of the victims. When we BELIEVE BLACK WOMEN, we can save our children! Tennille Power is a minister, therapist and life coach. She is the founder of Woman’s Worth, LLC @ womensworthllc January 9 - 15, 2019 3

Cover Story Creating A Culture That Believes Children The “Surviving R. Kelly” docuseries by Dream Hampton hits all of us hard. This series has captivated us because R. Kelly is a wellknown, high-profile celebrity – but sexual violence against children is perpetrated every day by people far less famous. At Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center, we respond to more than 2,000 reports of child sexual abuse each year. These cases come to us from reports to the Chicago Police Department and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. We provide crisis intervention, advocacy and mental health services to all of these children for free. More than half of these children are Black, and 75 percent are girls. The offender is almost always someone the child knows and trusts. Sadly, we also know that only about one-third of incidences of sexual abuse are ever reported to authorities. This means that right now, there are thousands of other child victims in our city who are surviving without the support they desperately need and deserve. The “Surviving R. Kelly” docu-

series causes us to feel hurt and angry and to ask what we can do now. While difficult to watch, films like this help educate all of us about the changes we need to make to our world to end sexual violence. We can and must take action. We are all responsible for the safety of children in our city. As a society, our culture is starting to shift to one that believes victims and allows survivors to come forward without fear of retaliation or blame. This culture shift must include Black girls. A 2017 report from Georgetown Law, “Girlhood Interrupted,” reminds us that Black girls are more likely to be subjected to implicit bias from adults that may view them as hypersexualized due to their race. Dream Hampton’s docuseries highlights an ongoing case where this implicit bias may have contributed to victim blaming, systematic inequities and lack of support for those harmed. All of this is infuriating. It’s what we work against every day at ChicagoCAC. How can you turn anger into action? •Learn the warning signs of

sexual abuse and the concerning behaviors that could lead to sexual abuse. Our website has more information on how to keep children safe at ChicagoCAC.org/resources. •Believe children when they tell you about sexual abuse. They aren’t making it up. We know that children rarely lie about this. Approach these conversations from a non-judgmental and supportive place. •Don’t look the other way. Report suspicions to the Illinois Child Abuse Hotline (1-800-25-ABUSE) or to police, and reach out to community organizations like ChicagoCAC for help in supporting survivors. •Talk to your children about boundaries and consent, and about healthy sexual development. Talk to your children’s school about how they are delivering sex education to students. It’s time that we prioritize educating ourselves and professionals who work with children about child sexual abuse. We must stop cycles of abuse by ensuring that intervention and treatment services

are available for children and their families. Need help? At ChicagoCAC, we provide crisis intervention, advocacy, forensic interviewing, therapy and support when children and families need it most. We also provide prevention education. To learn more, visit us at ChicagoCAC.org and send an email to Training@ ChicagoCAC.org. We stand with the courageous

survivors who came forward to share their testimonies in “Surviving R. Kelly.” Black girls deserve better. They deserve to be believed and supported by everyone. Join us in battling child sexual abuse until, by working together, we end it! Char Rivette Executive Director Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center

How To Protect Our Children Over the past few years, we have heard many stories about Robert Kelly, a/k/a R. Kelly and the young, underage girls he has allegedly stalked and brought “under his wing” only to allegedly hold them against their will and sexually abuse them. There are so many questions as to how he was able to prey on young girls and teens. After watching the Lifetime documentary, “Surviving R. Kelly,” so many unanswered questions clouded my mind: •How was Kelly allowed to get away with crimes against young girls and teens? •Where were the school administrators, teachers, principals and what did they do in an attempt to remove Kelly from the campuses and surrounding areas? Why were they not held accountable for protecting the students from a pedophile and predator? •Were parents ever notified by the schools? •Why were the parents who allegedly brought their teen daughters to Kelly never charged with trafficking their daughters? 4 January 9 - 15, 2019

The R. Kelly scenario is a stark reminder to ALL parents and guardians that it is our responsibility to be our child’s biggest advocate. •Did any of the girls involved receive counseling after their alleged imprisonment? The R. Kelly scenario is a stark reminder to ALL parents and guardians that it is our responsibility to be our child’s biggest advocate. When it comes to the safety of our children and their mental wellbeing, from the time they are brought home from the hospital until they are able to go out into the world on their own as adults, it is our responsibility to ensure their safety and to not allow them to become victims of sexual predators. I have heard from survivors of childhood sexual abuse that they refused to watch the Kelly documentary; however, as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse who has shared my experiences, I felt it was very important for me to watch this series because I wanted to know more about the Kelly sto-

ry and how his behavior affected the young women he victimized. I wanted to hear their stories – stories that deserved to be heard, regardless of the fact that their experiences occurred years ago, and despite the fact that he was found not guilty of child pornography charges. I am an adult survivor of childhood sexual abuse. I was stalked by a pedophile who lived in our home. I was afraid to tell my mother that her husband had been molesting me for years, from the age of 7 years old until I was around 1213 years old. My mother was made aware of the abuse when I was in my freshman year of high school. Once she was told, I waited for my mother to take me in her arms, tell me that she loved me and that I was not to blame for the abuse I experienced, and let me know that she would see to it that my abuswww.chicagodefender.com

er – her husband – would be dealt with. However, she did nothing to protect me, her only daughter. No call to authorities, no counseling for me, no separation or divorce from him. I was betrayed, not just by her husband, but also by my mother, because she did not protect me – my abuser was still present in our home. My relationship with my mother was never the same after that because I no longer felt I could trust her. As a grandmother, I have had conversations with my grandchildren about being alert in their surroundings and creating boundaries for their safety. If at any time one of my grandchildren shares that they have been molested or abused in any way, I will respond immediately – including notifying authorities of their abuse. Children should never feel uneasy about coming to us when they have been sexually

assaulted, abused, or raped. Parents and guardians are responsible for setting boundaries for children, as well as telling them that they may one day encounter situations that put them at risk. Parents and guardians are responsible for ensuring children know that we are in their corner and will do anything in our power to keep them from being sexually exploited or abused, whether by a friend, another adult or child, or family member. In addition, we must remind our children that they are never at fault when someone crosses boundaries and causes them harm through sexual abuse. Our children deserve to be safe - FIRST and FOREMOST! Listen and talk to your children regularly. If they are not talking to you, pay attention to their behavior. Get involved with knowing what they are doing and who they are friends with outside of your home. Set rules and boundaries for your children. Do whatever you need to do to keep your children from becoming victims of people like R. Kelly. Donna H. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Community Four Things Parents Should Consider About Tech for Kids By Reginard Corbitt, Founder of SafeCyber For Globe Newswire Digital devices were popular Christmas gifts this year—but mostly for children. Statistics say 95 percent of teens have access to a smartphone, and 45 percent say they are online ‘almost constantly’ with YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat being the most popular (Pew Research). If you’re that parent that has purchased a smartphone, games console or tablet computer for your child, here are a few things to consider. 1. Real things happen in the digital world. The digital landscape is now most children’s reality. They are meeting real people, having real conversations and dealing with real issues and it’s all happening on digital platforms. Whether you buy them a device is not as important as helping them to use it appropriately and safely. The “Tech Talk” - talking to them about their online life - is just as important as the OTHER talk. Take time to listen even though you may not understand the text lingo. At least your child will know that you are willing to learn which can lead to them opening up about issues involving them or their friends.

2. You are the first line of defense. The same posture you take with protecting your child in the real world, you should take when protecting them online. You can’t be with them physically everywhere they go in life, so you teach them things that will help them stay safe in the world. Like don’t talk to strangers, only go to the place you gave them permission to go to and always look for a way out in case of an emergency. You can’t be with them every time they go online but you can teach them to navigate safely using the same principals you teach them about the real world. Don’t befriend people online you don’t know. Don’t download apps without your permission. If someone you don’t know does reach out to you online, here’s what you should do. Information is one of the best tools a parent can give a child to help them stay safe in the digital world. 3. Social Media Influence. What we give the most time to is what influences us. The more time a child spends having access to the internet, it is the same time the internet has access to them. There are people who spend hours online preying on children in gaming rooms and social media. It’s all they do and after they’ve spent

time online grooming them (when someone builds an online relationship with a young person and tricks them or pressures them into doing something sexual), their goal is to meet with them in person to have sex with them or worse. Social media is the new platform for human trafficking and prostitution. Some children meet predators offline and never return home. 4. Learn about parental controls. There’s no quantity of parental controls that replace the need for intentional parenting in today’s digital age, but you can be one step closer in digital parental mastery by having knowledge of the device your child owns. One of the first things you should ask or research when purchasing a device is what parental controls come with the device. I guarantee your child will have more knowledge than you on how the device works at some point but letting them know that you know something at least puts you in the digital game. There’s a lot of focus on the age a child should receive a phone but not enough on if you, the adult, is ready to teach them how to use it the right way and help them manage their use of it. Technology is great when used correctly and appropriately. So, if you want to mon-

Reginard Corbitt itor your child’s device without having to see every text message they send and receive, Bark is the app for you. Not wanting to sound cliché, but if your child is connected online it’s not a matter of if they’ll experience something inappropriate, difficult or cruel online, but a matter of when. We must do our best as parents to help them become the best digital citizens they can be. Reginald Corbitt is the found-

Chicago Urban League Receives Property Donation and $25,000 Grant from MB Financial The Chicago Urban League and MB Financial Bank, N.A., have closed on a transaction in which MB Financial donated a former bank branch to the organization, along with $25,000 to help retrofit the building for the League’s use. Barbara Lumpkin, the League’s Interim President and CEO, said the donation will enable the League to expand its youth development programs, which served 827 young people in fiscal 2018. “We are extremely grateful to MB Financial for this generous donation and for its investment in the future of the Chicago Urban League and the youth in our communities,” said Lumpkin. “In addition to a larger, more flexible space, 6 January 9 - 15, 2019

MB Financial’s commitment to an ongoing partnership opens up new opportunities for programming, as well as for increasing the number of youth we can serve.” MB Financial has committed to partnering with the League to support programs and services to youth in the surrounding communities, which include South Side neighborhoods such as West Englewood, Back of the Yards, Roseland, Auburn Gresham, Woodlawn and Englewood. Vicky Arroyo, president of the MB Community Development Corporation said, “MB Financial has been part of the Back of the Yards community for almost 20 years. We are pleased to continue to give

back to this wonderful community by providing this facility to the Chicago Urban League, an organization with a proven track record of helping people find jobs, affordable housing, educational opportunities, and resources to grow their businesses.” The donated property, at 5100 S. Damen Avenue in Chicago, is a 16,408-square-foot site that includes a 5,300-square-foot former bank branch and 26 parking spaces. The building, which includes a bank vault, will need to be renovated before the League’s youth programs can move in. The programs serve youth ages 13 to 18 and focus on reducing youth involvement with the criminal justice system, www.chicagodefender.com

decreasing school absences, and improving academic performance and socioemotional development. “The League depends on strong partnerships to carry out its mission of strengthening communities,” said Eric S. Smith, Chairman of the League’s Board of Directors and Regional President of Fifth Third Bank in Chicago. “On behalf of the Board of Directors of the League, we are excited about this opportunity to expand our services to youth and deepen our impact in the community.” The new space is located less than four miles from the Chicago Urban League’s headquarters at 4510 S. Michigan Avenue. The League currently leases a separate

space for much of its youth programming. Lumpkin added that, in addition to providing a convenient and larger space for youth programming, the donation will ultimately reduce expenses for the League and reactivate a commercial corner. The League’s Board of Directors approved a resolution to accept the donation on December 14, and MB Financial closed on the transaction Tuesday, December 18. Over the next few months, the organization will develop plans for renovations and finalize a timeline for moving into the space.

I knew I was going to be a magician, and this would be my career, I knew this was going to be my life.” At the age of 13, Jibrizy was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, and couldn’t leave his house for two years. “I love doing magic, and I noticed you need an audience to do magic. I said if my life ever becomes better, then I promise to myself, God and everyone around me that I will be the best at this. I would not let go, I would show the world I was chosen for this.” He began to fuel his dream by learning tricks, watching the greats. He then started posting videos to YouTube showing off his skills, and that’s when things began to take off. He became the youngest winner of the CW Television Network’s show “Penn & Teller Fool Us.” He is well known in the world, has met David Blaine, performed a trick for comedian Kevin Hart, and he is an Illusionist for the Chicago Bulls. Taylor stated, “People talking about you as a distraction; other people’s opinion can be a distraction but look past it and keep going. Nobody is going to give you a handout. Whatever you plan to do to help the world, make sure you can help them 110 percent. You become like a magnet, and an attraction gravitates towards people you need to be around. Ryan Henry of VH1’s Black Ink Opens 9Mag Tattoo Chicago By Marshelle R. Sanders Defender Contributing Writer The brand new 9Mag Tattoo Headquarters is officially open! This past Saturday, January 5, Owner Ryan Henry had a grand opening party to showcase the extension of the brand new shop, introduce the new team and give the city a chance to turn up with the “Black Ink Chicago” crew. Henry is a South Side Chicago native who has been rebuilding the brand of 9Mag with a bit of personal transformation as well. Henry stated, “What’s going to be different about the newer 9mag is that I spent a bunch of time discovering how to conduct business the correct way whereas before I was doing it by helping people and not knowing how to do things the right way. Now that I have gone through those trials and tribulations and I’ve learned how to conduct business, and from my experience, I use those ways to bring in a different format.” For the grand opening party, tickets sold out twice. The fans that obtained them got a chance to come and see what Henry had been working on for the last four months. He wanted to show them what the shop is like now that it is thoroughly modernized and contemporary. The night consisted of a catered event and of course an after party in the 8,000-square foot space. The new 9Mag is more prominent and grander. Henry’s team now consists of 10 artist and two piercers. “Black Ink Crew: Chicago” returned for season 5 on Jan. 2 at 9 p.m. on VH1. This season, fans can expect a variety of different things as everyone figures out their journey, and as always, the turn up will be real, very entertaining and full of surprises. Henry also talks about how he has transformed personally since last season. “Last year, going through all the stuff that I went through, it made me fall back into a dark place mentally, but it also opened my eyes. I knew that I had to start over; it needed to be done. When I had separated myself from the people that had become toxic, I had to learn to become a better person from that.” Henry talked about how his past affected his relationship, and while he was in the mode of exclusion, it has allowed him to see that he needed to figure something out about himself internally as well. Sometimes it takes hitting the bottom to learn it, and now that he’s back, Henry is prepared to move forward. “I would never want to make someone feel as if I’m not putting my all into anything that I do, so this gave me a full reset on THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

how I wanted to eat right, how I want to work, how I want to live and to be respected, how I wanted to love and all these other different things, it was just a full reset.” Henry is also involved with #HashtagLunchbag, which is a humanity service movement dedicated to empowering and inspiring humanity to reap the benefits of giving using social media. The organization creates bagged lunches for the homeless complete with love messages, as a vessel to spread this love and inspire others. “I’m still a big part of #LunchBag Chicago. It initially is about giving back to the homeless. When I first started doing it years ago, I got a chance to see what it was like for them to live that way. I’ve seen people and kids that didn’t have anything. It ended up giving me insight about the homeless, what can happen, what needs to happen.” His plans for the upcoming 2019 year is to continue to focus on the new shop, focus on progression rather than challenges and create a plan for a 9Mag foundation that will allow people who are less fortunate a chance to explore certain places around the city. “A part of the plan for the 9Mag foundation this year will permit me to take families (women and kids) who are in shelters around the city of Chicago. They can’t go in selected places or let alone go to the park such as the Millennium Park, the Maggie Daley park you know. I take my kids everywhere because I want them to be able to have that experience. That experience helps them open up to so many different things in life that they don’t get a chance to see.” Many things go into starting a business, which is why you need to know what and what not to do before you start a business. As an aspiring entrepreneur, you should be ready to take risks but also learn to remember how and why you started. Henry stated, “If you allow for things to run freely, they will run freely when instead there needs to be structure. Being an entrepreneur is the hardest thing in the world. Strive to build that goal; even when everybody doesn’t believe in your goals, you got to stick with it and understand that sometimes there will be loss.” No matter what happens just like Henry said in last week’s episode: “I got one team that’s mainly important in my life, and outside of family, that’s 9Mag, and 9Mag starts with Ryan Henry. 12 Voices On the Front Porch: The Roof is on Fire STOP TALKING By Shanita Baraka Akintonde 12 Voices “The most disrespected person in America is the Black woman. The most unprotected person in America is the Black woman. The most neglected person in America is the Black woman.” Malcolm X A shocking video taken of a New Shanita Baraka Year’s Eve incident Akintonde has recently gone viral. The camera shows a 20-year-old Black female McDonald’s employee, Yasmine James, being viciously accosted by a 40-year-old White male customer named Daniel Willis Taylor. The dispute occurred in St. Petersburg, Florida, a locale known as “Sunshine City,” just outside of Tampa. But there is nothing sunny nor shiny about this incident. The camera captured Taylor visibly infuriated over something regarding his recently purchased McDonald’s meal. His straw was missing, which for him, was an abhorrent act of negligence. However, the missing straw was due to a mandate, not a mistake. A newly passed edict by the St. Petersburg Council orders restaurants to only hand out straws by request. Upon receipt of this fun fact, Taylor grew more irate. He decided to leave common sense in the corner and decorum at the door as he lunged over the counter headed straight for Ms. James’ throat. He landed on his target. As Ms. James struggled for air between Taylor’s double-fisted chokehold, onlookers stood passively nearby--never mind that James was half her assailant’s size, half his age and was doing her job at the time of the bout. But Ms. James was not going down without a fight. What happened next is awe-inspiring. James morphed into David facing her very own Goliath. Armed with small fists and an enormous heart, she pummeled an adrenaline-laced avalanche of punches across Taylor’s face, head, and upper torso. He released his grip; a forlorn giant defeated at his own game. The media have lauded James’ heroic boxing abilities. I am not cheering. This incident should not have happened in the first place. It is unfathomable that any employee should have to fend off attackers in the workplace. Further, there is no reason any person, male or female, should feel that it is within his or her purview to assault another person, particularly a woman. But therein lies the problem: the number of attacks against women, whether public or private, no matter who or HUE, is on the rise. Black women are often singled out and at escalated levels of offense. NEGATIVELY! By Carl West 12 Voices

I think these Works of Words are probably gonna be my most heartfelt and descriptive expression of love and commitment to my people. Remember when I penned an article about us being more mature in our decisions and actions? Well, what I’m gonna lay out will require maturity Carl West at the highest level. Because the Black community is in need of some real transformation if we’re to advance in unimaginable ways. By now, we know that Blacks ain’t **__! We hear that at every intersection...... when people are having water cooler conversations, news personalities and pastors are delivering their sermons and even some of our elite, educated, and so-called professionals and entrepreneurs are talking Black. But the talking they’re doing is harmful and divisive. That’s what I want them to be more mature about. This is my one and only New Year’s Resolution. In 2019, this is what I demand: If Black folks, collectively, are so bad or unattractive to other Blacks, then leave the community. Be a part of the exodus that’s happening with people leaving this freakin’ city. If you’re gonna live, work and play in the hood, then move heaven and earth to make it better, not worse. Because that’s what you do when screaming out negative narratives about your own people. Don’t be afraid to call out any one person or group of people who are fraudulent! I endorse that. But don’t hide behind or scapegoat your emotions by grouping the community when trying to make your point. List the names of the ones doing wrong. Every Black person should not be made to feel guilty as though they did the horrible act! We can point out the wrong that individuals do but let’s not put our community under one umbrella. I’ll not engage in chatter with anyone who starts off: All Black people! If we wanna inspire each other, let us do that, because we can’t transform lives by dogging out Black life. This goes for Black radio talking heads, guest commentators, printed journalists and alike. STOP! We have plenty to be proud of. Let’s showcase our greatness. This should be our new year’s pledge. Carl D. West is the CEO/Publisher of TBTNews and founder of the TRUTH 4 Literacy Foundation, Leadership Luncheon, Legend and Pioneer Awards, all powered by Midwest Gap Enterprise.
