Nissan Joins 100 Black Men for Student Challenge
Never underestimate the value of a well-written resume. That’s one of several key takeaways shared by Nissan and 100 Black Men of America during the 2018 Nissan Resume Challenge and Summit. The program, now in its fifth year, brought more than 50 high school juniors and seniors from across the U.S. to Franklin, Tenn. recently for a two-day development experience designed to give them a competitive edge. “We’re delighted to once again welcome young leaders of tomorrow to our North American headquarters,” said Rebecca Vest, vice president, Corporate Development and Social Responsibility, Nissan North America, Inc. “Every year, we meet an outstanding group of young men eager to learn, network and hone their interview skills as they begin to plan for their futures after high school.” Vest was one of several Nissan executives who supported an action-packed slate of activities that included leadership workshops, networking sessions and visits to the Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant and Nissan Stadium. During the stadium tour, the students stopped for a photo op with Heisman Trophy winner and Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry. Jermany Gray, a student at Crane Medical Prep High School in Chicago, said the experience has given him a new take on the automotive industry. “It was so incredible to learn about how complex a car company is,” he said. “I was very impressed with the company, and I hope one day to have the opportunity to work here.” Every student who participated in the challenge had to go through a rigorous application and interview process in order to be selected. “It is a very competitive process. The young men seated in the room today earned that seat,” said Albert ‘Al’ Denning, executive director of the Chicago Chapter of 100 Black Men. Gray wasn’t alone in his interest and enthusiasm for what he learned from and about Nissan. The room overflowed with a contagious energy and hands shot up with questions every couple of minutes. If this is the future of our workforce, we are in good hands.

Lawmakers Call for Legislation, Announce New Technology to Combat Auto Theft Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson joined by state lawmakers, aldermen and community members recently called for a change in state law that will embolden enforcement against car thieves. The proposed law, filed Friday by Representative Jaime Andrade Jr., Representative Arthur Turner, Representative Marcus Evans, Representative Kathleen Willis, Representative Kelly Burke, and Representative Luis Arroyo in the House and Senator Tony Munoz and Senator Bill Cunningham in the Senate, would update current language in the Illinois’ possession of a stolen motor vehicle statute to empower victims who had their cars taken unlawfully. The Mayor and Superintendent Johnson also announced police vehicles are currently being equipped with license plate reader technology to quickly and accurately identify and locate stolen vehicles. The new technology will be linked to the OEMC dispatch system, and access to the information will be available in CPD’s new strategic nerve centers to ensure rapid response, www.chicagodefender.com
awareness and apprehension. “Our mission is clear: we want to prevent carjackings and cars from being stolen to strengthen community safety,” said Mayor Emanuel. “As a challenge facing communities across the state, we are seeking to use the laws better and more effectively to give victims a better chance to get justice in court.” The proposed legislation shifts the focus to the victim of theft and creates an opportunity to pursue Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle (PSMV) charges when an offender is caught driving a stolen vehicle without the owner’s consent. Through this change, victims who have had their vehicles taken unlawfully, and sometimes violently, would have the opportunity to obtain justice in court. “Whenever someone’s personal property and safety have been violated, we need to do whatever we can to ensure that they are made whole again,” said Representative Jaime Andrade Jr. “The legislation announced today will allow us to give some level of closure to victims and help us to reduce future incidents. A lot of these apps now are all hook-up apps. There are people who are looking to have relationships and establish something more substantial than a fling by night relationship.” Dixon said RBL has grown through a grassroots effort, or how he describes it-“a movement.” He said RBL previously has held events and hosted parties to spread the word about the business. He said RBL is different from the Tinder model which helps to create better connections and is an “invite only” app. He explained RBL is moderated to maintain quality. He said 200-300 people sign up for the app on a daily basis. “As a matchmaker I always told people to never limit your dating pool; you have to cast your net wide enough to get a decent pool,” said Dixon. “With professionals you’re busy, you’re not going out all the time, you don’t have time to meet people. This gives you the chance to not just meet anyone but the right one.” Dixon said he’s been a part of the online dating scene since 1997/1998. He said within the coming month or so, the latest version of the app will be released. “Everything that was great about those old sites that people used to use, I just implemented them into RBL, and the things that people hated, I made sure was not a part of RBL,” said Dixon. “We are going to take our competition head on with our next version and we are going to let the people decide.” Both SoulSwipe and RBL shared several wonderful accounts of Black couples finding love, getting married, and starting families. Although, Marsh said she has not personally used a dating app tailored to Black people, she would be open to the idea. “I would use [a dating app] tailored to

POLITICS
Could Fritz Kaegi be the Next Cook County Assessor? By Mary L. Datcher Defender Managing Editor Fritz Kaegi is a thorn in the Cook County Assessor’s side. The millionaire financial manager is running against Joe Berrios in the March 2018 primary election. Running on the platform of being a progressive Democrat, the husband and father of three resides in Oak Park, and as a Certified Illinois Assessment Officer, he has mastered the property tax assessment system. Financing his own campaign with $1.3 million since December 2017, this is the first time he has taken the leap in running for a public office. Growing up in the Hyde Park community, Kaegi attended Kenwood Academy. His father was a history professor at the University of Chicago, and his mother was an editor and former peace officer who was active in Civil Rights causes. Raising his own family, he’s built a career as a financial manager for Columbia Wanger Asset Management, which would lead him to co-manage company assets and become a long-term Democratic donor supporting causes such as the minimum wage ballot measure, Planned Parenthood, ACLU and other organizations. He is no stranger to going against the grain. “I grew up in the 80’s surrounded by discussions about progressive politics. I’ve played baseball and would be playing with my friends in the alley where I would see Harold Washington posters on the poles--Come Alive with ‘85 and We Should See in ‘83. That was my first awareness in politics. After graduating from college, I lived abroad for a while. I came back to Chicago in 2001. I’ve been here ever since. I have a wife, Rebecca. I have three kids and attend First United Methodist Church of Oak Park,” said Kaegi. “I was really proud of my career. I’ve always had an interest in serving my community. I got involved in politics—supporting young Democrats and I did this for over a decade. I also served on a board for Central Venture Partners.” Visiting different communities throughout Cook County, Kaegi says the conversation is often the same especially among Black and Latino property owners who feel there is an unfairness in the current property assessment system. He agrees wholeheartedly that there needs to be immediate changes so that taxpayers are not in jeopardy of losing their property. “Every time we go, and we talk to people who say, ‘I was displaced from my home because the property assessment was too high.’ Or you talk to someone who had a family business and they were forced out or talk to someone in the faith community. Every time you lose someone in a church, the whole church can feel it,” he says. “If someone is teaching youth ministry, you feel that departure. This is what this office [Cook County Assessor] is about because when we have over assessment, it causes people to be displaced, causes businesses to disinvest and go vacant. At the same time, there is lavish benefits to downtown corporate skyscraper owners. Our assessment system hasn’t caught up.” Kaegi is not only up against the incumbent Assessor Joe Berrios, he is also running against the Chair of the Cook County Democratic party, which Berrios holds. This doesn’t faze the native South Sider. His endorsements from Black public officials and faith leaders include Congressman Danny K. Davis, Congresswoman Robin Kelly, Rev. Otis Moss, Father Pfleger, Rev. Marshall Hatch and Rev. Ira Acree among others. He has a plan in place to change the current system. “Change is long overdue, but it’s gotten worse under Assessor Berrios. He gets his campaign financed by lawyers who are in the assessor repeal business. He’s not focused on fixing our assessment system. He’s focused on getting more business for his campaign donors by telling THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
Fritz Kaegi people to appeal. We’re never going to fix the system that way,” he continues. “First of all, we’re not taking donations from lawyers or people from the industry of property tax assessment. They function from a malfunctioned system and it creates bias. It’s a big part of the problem. We’re also put in a lot of rules that will take out political influence and the appearance of political influence and favoritism from the assessment process. “Secondly, the first thing we want to tell people [is how] they are calculated. They won’t reveal the basic aspects right now. It’s hidden behind closed doors. That’s unique in this state. The other counties do that. It allows bias and malfunctioned process, and it’s not accountable. I want to open up the data and algorithms. That would go a long way. How we measure this office is how are you doing for the vast majority of people that don’t appeal.” Kaegi concludes his progressive plan. “There’s a better model available that is less regressive, that’s more accurate. The office already owns this model. The PWR model. The assessor’s office told us they were going to implement but because they agreed it was horribly regressive. It took the Chicago Tribune’s investigation last summer to show that they were lying, they didn’t implement the system. It’s only gotten worse. That’s why people are so mad. Not only is the system being corrupt, it generates unjust outcomes,” he adds. “We don’t need a new law to implement them, it rewww.chicagodefender.com
quires new leadership in this office to drive out the ‘pay for play’ and to put in rules to make it transparent.” According to a recent poll by Public Policy Polling (PPP)—the polling memo showed Kaegi in the lead over Berrios. With 44 percent for Kaegi and 27 for Berrios, he leads over incumbent and Cook County Democratic Party Chairman Joe Berrios. PPP surveyed 757 likely Democratic primary voters in Cook Co. from February 6-7, 2018. The margin of error for the poll is +/- 3.6 percent. Having a major budget has allowed Kaegi to push his legal team to challenge candidate Andrea Raila. Both sides have issued statements on Raila’s allegations of Kaegi’s harassments and Kaegi alleging a “fraudulent petition drive” by Raila. As it stands, Kaegi will be the only Democratic candidate to face Berrios in the primary election. “We’re 100 percent focused on earning people’s trust. The first thing to earn the people’s trust is to walk the walk by having a representative staff. I grew up in an integrated community in Hyde Park. I’m always mindful when I’m not in an integrated community. I want to have the office looking like this-- not just demographically but geographically,” he says. “The Southland has been mistreated by the county for so long. They are especially vulnerable by the unfairness of this system. People go to Will County or Indiana, so we need to get it right for them. We also need to speak out more for policies like progressive income taxes, a better school funding formula.” February 14 - 20, 2018 5
COMMENTARY
Lessons Learned From An Open Letter To Pritzker on Blago Tapes Pritzker’s Pastors and Politicians By A.M. Triche Defender Guest Columnist
Billionaire JB Pritzker recently found himself in an unenviable position. His comments during a candid conversation with ex-Governor Rod Blagojevich nearly ten years ago were recently made public. Perhaps you’ve been in a position where you’ve uttered an opinion about someone or referred A.M. Triche to something in a flippant manner and your words traveled beyond your intended audience. We all can relate to speaking during an unguarded moment with a trusted confidant or members of our inner circle of friends, when we may have used language or made comments that would not be considered politically correct. But we’re not running for governor. Given what you’ve heard on the news and through political advertisements paid for by current Governor Bruce Rauner’s campaign, you are certainly aware Pritzker is feeling the heat and would have probably given anything to ensure those specific cringeworthy comments remained private. I was among several members of the Black press who directly questioned JB Pritzker and his running mate for Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton during an exclusive interview at the administrative offices of the historic Chicago Defender. Credit must be given to Mr. Pritzker for immediately reaching out to those offended, and apologizing where appropriate. He also wasted no time speaking directly to Black voters on the city’s South and West sides. Some view that as merely political pragmatism, others have called it courageous. Pritzker forthrightly admitted he should have “pushed back” on comments made by Blagojevich during those wiretapped calls. He maintains it was “one day and one call” and that he’s tried to “demonstrate through actions over a lifetime” that he is a friend of the Black community. I believe he sincerely regrets the comments he made, and not only because they became public. Were the comments considered offensive? Clearly the answer is “yes.” Were the comments insulting to those mentioned in unflattering terms? Clearly, the answer is “yes.” In fact, in response to Pritzker’s revealed comments, the venerable Emil Jones Jr.—who was among those mentioned— called on him to drop out of the race. Were the comments tinged with the sub6 February 14 - 20, 2018
tle arrogance of elitism? Again, the answer is “yes,” but these are the types of discussions that take place among political elites. If you’ve followed Illinois politics at all, you already know this is the tone and tenor of conversations by well-connected political heavyweights—no matter what the color. There are also lessons for those considering a run for political office in the future. So much has happened in the past, especially as it relates to Illinois governors. If you desire to obtain political office in Illinois and you are speaking to one (or one that hopes to be one), consider the fact that you might be recorded. That’s a sobering thought, but an unfortunate political reality. Speaking to a governor who at the time was under investigation, had his conversations monitored and recorded for years, was impeached, convicted and now sits in prison related to federal corruption charges has become a problem for JB Pritzker, but it could also end up being a problem for many of the state’s political players and perhaps even some on the national level. Am I reaching? I don’t think so. Are there more recordings coming? Perhaps. In fact, Pritzker told us he has asked that all the recordings be released to hear his words—and the words of others—in context, not after what he referred to as “selective editing.” The message I received from JB Pritzker and his running-mate Juliana Stratton during our nearly one-hour round-table discussion is a message they hope spreads beyond those embarrassing leaked comments. Their message is that Gov. Rauner has failed the Black community and what has occurred during his administration disproportionately and negatively impacts those who are most marginalized. Many social service programs, senior care, child care, violence prevention, and after school programs “have all been devastated under this governor’s failed leadership,” said Stratton. Beyond individuals being cast in a somewhat negative light during recorded conversations, the community must ask tough questions to find out why these comments have caused such a stir. Is it because each day it seems there are reminders that we are not in a “post-racial” society? Is it because the Black electorate is again being forced to conduct a realistic assessment of its political strength and how it should be used? As the old saying goes, “It’s chess not checkers.” Unfortunately, too many times, Black voters are considered mere “pawns” in the political game. But they are not thin-skinned, nor are they naïve.
By Ja’Mal Green Defender Guest Columnist “YOU’RE SAFEEE.” When did JB Pritzker become the umpire of Black leadership? As a person who speaks out against injustices, I felt like he was calling all independent thinking Black people “crass.” My reputation, work, and eventually my freedom have come under attack because I dared to challenge a segregated and unjust system in Chicago. Holding politicians accountable upset the status quo that divides the North and South sides. The sadness I feel is for my own sons, as well as the sons and daughters of my community, who now see Ja’Mal Green that they have to tap dance for opportunity in the current system. As pastors and politicians you are trusted to act in the best interest of your people. When will you stop trading our lives for your few pieces of silver? I’m referring to the pastors who fail to recognize that the people they claim to represent don’t share the same kitchen table concerns as a person who has eaten with a billion dollar silver spoon his whole life. Pritzker makes his money the same way Trump does, from Wall Street, by exploiting workers, and cheating the tax system. Our people need you to fight for them. To be a Black leader is an honor, it means you defied odds; you overcame. It is your job to break down the obstacles for our future generations. JB is the epitome of those obstacles. When Trump degrades the character and communities of Black and Brown people, we call him out. It should be no different when we hear a Democrat uttering such despicable things about us. We are Haiti. We are Africa. We are Latin America. We are the people who dared to rise, dared to speak out, and dared to dream. JB Pritzker has been unmasked for who he really is and how he feels about the Black community in particular. If you walk around downtown or the Upper North side of Chicago, you find the Pritzker name displayed as prominently as the Trump name in NYC. The name Pritzker is branded like a proud tattoo throughout our city, chronicling his families various investments and sponsorships around our town, but as I walk through our communities of color, Pritzker and his name are noticeably void, highlighting his lack of consideration for our people, our neighborhoods, and OUR lives. Pritzker has made his disdain for Black people who dare to challenge the status quo in Chicago clear. Daring to be unapologetically Black in HIS city is offensive. How can we have the audacity to identify with something void of the Pritzker white wash? Do we really need another rich man who has never worked the way we work or lived the way we live playing dress up as a politician? Remember Trump asked us what do we have to lose before he was elected; now we know. Can we afford to learn this lesson again? Pastors have always played a critical role in guiding the Black community. Is money worth your integrity? If so, you are on notice from the next generation of leadership, this is your pink slip. I know that some of you have accepted the silver. I have proof that Pritzker has branded his family name across your backs in exchange for convincing Black people to turn the other cheek. Are these receipts worth your legacy? Our community is filled with so much excellence, but constantly being expected to shine within the present barriers is unfair to future generations. The fact is we need a JB, a jailbreak from the chains that bind and define our actions, chains that create an environment where urban children go to school without learning, chains that bind working class people to multiple jobs trying to piece together a living wage, and chains that create ghost towns in urban communities and become marked by Black and Brown bodies falling due to senseless violence. How will JB break chains that his lifestyle enforces? We have made mistakes in the past, constantly turning our cheek only to feel the sting of prejudice from yet another rich man with disdain for our people. We have to fix this by electing someone who can understand our obstacles. A new era is coming, will you rise for your people, or fall victim to the dollar?

BUSINESS Building New Bridges: An Interview With WBC’s CEO Andrea Zopp By Mary L. Datcher Defender Managing Editor None of us have a clear vision to where our journey will carry us. Many will follow the educational and trade path— leading to an adequate profession while we go where the wind blows. Nonetheless, there are dips, turns—and it feels good when we reach the top. Andrea Zopp has achieved what most of us would only dream of in this lifetime—climbing up through the ranks working in the US Attorney’s office; serving as First Assistant for the Cook County State’s Attorney transitioning into the private sector of a Chicago Law firm, Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal, and serving in senior executive positions at Sara Lee, Sears Holdings Corp. and Exelon Corp. She’s also taken on the role as president and CEO of the Chicago Urban League. Her 2015 bid for US Senator launched her into the public eye, as she traveled statewide—meeting Illinoisans from the North Shore to downstate—getting a better understanding of different communities’ needs and resources. Defeated by Democratic party endorsed, then-Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth—she didn’t lick her wounds but instead accepted the position of Deputy Mayor offered by Mayor Rahm Emanuel. For nearly 18 months, Zopp was the liaison between the Mayor and the community. Her business savvy and knowledge of the corporate business model and small businesses put her in a unique position to help the mayor’s office look at broadening their outreach into the neighborhoods. More so, after a countless number of police misconduct allegations, lawsuits and school closings— relationships between the current administration was on life support and having someone with Zopp’s background and outreach was a welcomed change. Zopp joined World Business Chicago (WBC) in November 2017 as the new CEO. WBC is a public-private, non-profit partnership that promotes economic growth, job creation and supports businesses while attracting others to consider making Chicago their business hub. Now, in its 17th year, she says WBC’s core mission is to “recruit companies to the city and help the businesses in Chicago area expand and grow.” She adds, “Also to help grow the city’s presence globally--[become] a place for international businesses to invest.” “I’m really thrilled to be here at WBC. It’s a natural transition for a number of broad roles for me personally. We’re a public nonprofit where we get private money but also get TIF money from the city. The mayor serves as the chair of our board. We serve to drive economic opportunity to the city. To be back in a nonprofit but private sector and working with the business community is great,” she said. This is not her first time being a part of WBC’s efforts to come up with a comprehensive plan for neighborhood businesses. “When the mayor came in 2011, he put together a steering committee which I participated on when I was at the Chicago Urban League... to create the plan for economic growth and jobs. It was an economic development plan; how do we grow the city and what is the strategies in order to do that?” She explained the plan was supported by many companies. We came up with ten strategies that focused on workforce, neighborhood development, tech, manufacturing and a number of other areas. Over the last two and a half years, WBC worked on implementing access of the plans and have a number of initiatives to come out of that plan, including a number of incubator spin-offs...a place called Current which is focused on water and water technology along with M-Hub which focus on manufacturing.” WBC received a large grant from the government for the digital labs program which includes Chicago Anchors 8 February 14 - 20, 2018
Andrea Zopp. Photo by Mary L. Datcher for a Strong Economy (CASE), Connect Chicago, ChicagoNEXT and others. Working closely with the mayor’s Neighborhood Development and Dept. of Planning, the WBC is dedicated as another source of outreach for Chicago small businesses. As they move into building their infrastructure and team, Bernita Johnson Gabriel recently joined the organization as Executive Vice President for Neighborhoods and Strategic Initiatives. Gabriel was formerly senior advisor for neighborhood development and housing for the mayor’s office. Zopps says, “When we talk to businesses who take an interest in coming to Chicago, expanding their idea on where they should go.... Would you be interested in coming into a neighborhood whether it’s for an office space or a manufacturing plant? We have a woman who is focused on that work and we have someone focused on workforce initiatives. The team would also be working on supporting small businesses. We have a small but mighty team here working with the other existing teams.” Although Mayor Emanuel is the chair for World Business Chicago, Zopp points out they work separately from the city but are “aligned.” They are very involved with the efforts to recruit Amazon to the city for their second Headquarters. The group recently celebrated the achievements of Chicago’s tech community at the Chicago NEXT awards. This was part of the Blackstone Inclusive Entrepreneurship Challenge program. “Part of that last year, we received a grant from Blackwww.chicagodefender.com
stone to help expand opportunities for more diverse businesses in the tech market. We have a number of organizations that are participating in that, from women, veteran’s program—Bethel New Life, Blue 1647, 1847—those organizations are working on identifying and supporting diverse tech entrepreneurs. In bringing together businesses beyond the city of Chicago, Zopp and her team are working with the Chicago Regional Growth Corporation. They are working with Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and seven local counties to form a regional base economic development which we’re working on with the county and all of the seven local counties into the group we formed to do regional base economic development. Tackling the challenges of the recession recovery for business owners on the Westside, Southside and the Northwest side are on WBC’s radar to provide resources. But, the Harvard Law graduate has entered a new chapter in helping businesses thrive because she says it provides job opportunities and an opening for “middle class” families to stay in their communities. “Being in a nonprofit and independent entity gives you more flexibility than working in government. We can work more closely with the business community, to bring more resources in the city,” Zopp reflects. “We’re very fortunate that we have a business community that understands and are committed to the city thriving. As a result, they support an organization like us—whether it’s related to them or not because they understand.” THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

All In For Amazon Coming To Chicago By Kimberly McCullough-Starks 12 Voices
As we settle into a new year, I have been thinking about the future of the African-American community, and more specifically about economic development, and its direct impact on us. While I in no way wish to minimize the past or the present, I find it important and productive to think about the future - what’s to come and how we can prepare to benefit and move forward in a positive way. To that end, there are amazing things that are happening, some big and some small. Today I want to focus on the one big thing that can play a significant role in accelerating the growth and development of the South and West Sides of Chicago – the location of Amazon’s second headquarters HQ2. Kimberly The world continues to watch what’s happening in our MCullough-Starks great city, only getting a glimpse of it through the lens of tragedies, with no view of the everyday heroes who are sustaining neighborhoods where hope has been significantly diminished. Amazon or not, change has to come to these two large geographic footprints in Chicago. Disinvestment can no longer occur if we are to move Chicago forward as a whole. The location of Amazon HQ2 on the Burnham Lakefront site, which most people know as the old Michael Reese Hospital property, would be a real game changer for the South Side. Its boundaries are far larger than just the old Michael Reese Hospital campus. Its boundaries are the Stephenson Expressway on the North, 31st Street on the South, Lakeshore Drive on the East, and Indiana Avenue on the West. This is a significant parcel of land with great attributes, including its lakefront location, proximity to public transit, housing stock, and access to worldclass technology infrastructure. Amazon choosing this site as its new second headquarters would create an amazing economic boon to the South Side because of its geographic location, its magnitude and the mere nature of what a corporate campus brings to any location. Imagine if the South Side had a doorway to McCormick Place, the new DePaul Arena and the loop that could drive tourists into the community. A bridge, if you will, that crosses over to stimulate economic activity. I am in no way minimizing any potential downside, but the benefit significantly outweighs any challenges. The most obvious benefit is the 50,000 jobs that the company has said it will bring to any city. For us it is not only about the employment and contracting opportunities directly with Amazon, but more importantly, it is about the ripple effect. Large employers mean more--more in many, many different ways. It means more customers for existing businesses, more restaurants, retail shops, service providers, renters, and opportunity. It presents opportunity in many different ways, some that have not been conceived as of yet. Its mere presence will spur innovation in many different industries. It is the ripple effect that we want to reap the benefits of. The multiplier will go much further than just the campus locating here and directly hiring Chicago residents. This global company can bring about lots of positive change—a new vibrancy from 22nd Street down to Jackson Park and the Obama Library Campus and beyond. Chicago is a perfect place for Amazon because it is a global city. We have access to the world from our airports, a good public transit system, great cultural institutions, diverse communities, including those located on the South Side. We are more than the myriad of stories focusing on the violence in our neighborhoods that is portrayed in the local and national press. This is a moment in time when we should be amplifying the positive attributes of our neighborhoods, showcasing the great people who are doing great things and raising our collective voices to rally in support of an opportunity that can benefit us most. We should stand up and raise our hands to Jeff Bezos and say we want you here; we welcome and encourage you to select Chicago as your new second home. We are all in for Amazon in Chicago! Kimberly McCullough-Starks is President & CEO of Platinum Public Strategies, LLC, a community engagement, diversity inclusion and public affairs firm. She has decades of experience in the public and private sector working with local chambers of commerce, non-profits and government on community development matters. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Let’s Eat: Garifuna Flava Showcases Belizean Cuisine By The Black Foodies Caribbean cuisine has been trending over recent years, with jerk and curry dishes titillating taste buds all over the country. On the southwest side of Chicago – in Gage Park – we were told about a Belizean restaurant called Garifuna Flava located at 2518 W. 63rd St., Chicago, IL. Quick history lesson: The story of the Garifuna people begins when South The Black American Carib Foodies Indians migrated to the Caribbean Island of St. Vincent and intermarried with native Arawak Indian islanders, almost 400 years ago. In 1635, two Spanish ships carrying indentured Nigerians sank, and many of these Nigerians survived by swimming to St. Vincent, adding to the Crib-Arawak genetic mix. They eventually migrated to areas in Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and southern Belize. Hence, Belizean food has Latin, Caribbean and African influences.

Sauteed shrimp Miss Coretta of Black Foodies with Hussein Castillo of Garifuna Flava We started our dining experience at Garifuna Flava with house-made plantain chips served with freshly made guacamole and kingfish panades served with a habanero slaw. Quoting Ice Cube, we knew it was going to be a “Good Day” with this yummy opening act. The plantain chips were visually appealing, crispy, and simply delicious. We hope Garifuna Flava bags this scrumptious snack and distributes them to local markets. They are that good! Their
guacamole has a smooth texture, though we prefer our guacamole slightly chunky with a bit more lime. However, it was still an excellent guacamole that paired well with the plantain chips. We were eager to sample the kingfish panades. Kingfish is a type of mackerel, and while not as popular as flounder, red snapper or catfish, when properly prepared, is quite a treat. Garifuna Flava delivered mightily with the kingfish panades. The flaky, mild, and lightly seasoned kingfish was stuffed inside a corn masa and deep fried. The end result was pure magic. The panades were light and airy with perfect masa to kingfish ratio. The habanero slaw added just the right amount of freshness and heat. Needless to say, before we left, we had to have these tasty bites to go. Next, we sampled the sautéed shrimp, which came with green peppers, red peppers and onions. This dish demonstrated to us that Garifuna Flava is not afraid to come out of its comfort zone. The shrimp and veggies were expertly prepared. A splash of teriyaki sauce added an unexpected sweet component that took our taste buds on an exciting roller coaster ride. This sweet and savory dish is a great fusion of Caribbean and Japanese flavors. Moving right along, let us tell you about the national dish of Belize, the Belizean stewed chicken. This stewed chicken has a flavor profile mix of southern soul food and the Caribbean, all rolled into one. Very good eating! The chicken just fell off the bone and was melt-in-your-mouth tender. It came with traditional rice and beans, with a side of Belizean gravy. The gravy was absolutely amazing! Douse the rice and beans with the gravy, and you won’t be sorry. Garifuna Flava has a plethora of delectable sides. The mac-n-cheese, split pea soup, potato salad, conch fritters and fried ripe plantains are all recommended. Their stewed oxtails, Jamaican jerk chicken, and deep-fried Kingfish are highly commended entrees. Garifuna Flava’s family recipes represent Caribbean comfort food at its finest. The service is friendly and, as an added bonus… yes, they have a parking lot. We rank restaurants based on number of kisses (one thru five, with five being the

City.Life.Style Moon Man Walk: Exploring The Depths of The Unknown Truth By Rick and Brenda McCain Let’s Play Sometimes the truth lies between reality and fantasy, where a single mother feels that she has to shield the truth so that her son can a have a false narrative of respect for his father. Unfortunately, as good as the mother’s intentions may be when the untold truth becomes reality, it can feel as though you are living in another world--where the story of your life feels like a superficial tale that leaves Brenda and Rick you caught between the moon and the earth to figure it out. McCain “My mom told me I didn’t touch the ground until I was five,” says Monarch (Debo Balogun), the protagonist of playwright James Ijames’ “Moon Man Walk,” presented by the Definition Theatre Company at Victory Gardens Theatre. Upon hearing about the sudden death of his beloved mother, Monarch returns to his childhood home in Philadelphia to plan her funeral. In doing so, he deals with his childhood, none existent father, loss, love, and the excruciatingly painful task of finding himself. The nucleus of this enchanting play is the moving between the present and the past with flashbacks amid an enduring relationships that Monarch shares with his mother Esther (Shadana Patterson), a woman he has been fond of since childhood. However, this relationship eventually

leads him struggling to come to terms with his identity because it is difficult to see beyond the blurred lines she has created amongst reality and fantasy. When Monarch is a little boy, he asks about his father, and his mother decides to fabricate a story to hide the truth that his father was imprisoned before he was born. She tells him that his father is an astronaut stuck on the moon and although Monarch knows his mother is not telling the truth, he is caught up in the fantasy of the fairytale. There are invisible forces that help to navigate this journey through the mechanism of a modern family. Although the set of “Man Moon Walk” is deceptively simplistic with its round platform surrounded by big steps that spiral upwards, seemingly going up to space, and the lighting is characterized by blue hues, adding to Monarch’s altered sense of reality. The performance peels back a lot of layers on the foundation and shaping of one man’s life with the complexities of growing up with a single mother and the stigma of an absent father and the physiological demands of adulthood. Nevertheless, with all of the struggles throughout Mon-

arch’s passage through life, we get to see him fall in love with an enigmatic and vibrant young woman by the name of Petrushka (Chanell Bell) who seemingly came into his life at the right time to help him deal with his pain. She challenges him to dig deeper into his past so that he can find the true meaning of who he is as a man. Monarch is now rewriting his narrative to his life story with the help of Petrushka. Her very presence allows him to envision a happier way of living and after he finds a bundle of letters at his mother’s house, he is able to leave behind the sanctity of his unpredictable life and explore the many concerns he has regarding his parents, especially his father Kesi (Michael Anthony Rawlins). Director Tyla Abercrumbie does a compelling job at taking us from Philadelphia to the moon and back with gravity forces that allow relationships to manifest themselves back in time. The cast provides a true life narrative of how difficult it can be when you start life already lost in the problematic past of others and the failure to overcome the obstacles they bring. Let’s Play recommends that you come and take a trip to the moon! The cast includes: Debo Balogun (Monarch) Chanelle Bell (Petrushka) Shadana Patterson (Esther, Flight attendant, Nurse, Dry Cleaning Lady, Historical Novel Lady) Michael Anthony Rawlins (Astronaut, Funeral Guy, Flower Guy, Kesi, Front Door Guy, Barista Guy, Mystery Novel Guy, Romance Novel Guy)

In the Mix: Love Bites for Pritzker, Black Panther Breaks Pre-Ticket Sales By Mary L. Datcher Defender Managing Editor Why Can’t We All Get Along? As we move into week two of what some have deemed as the “JB Pritzker Apology Tour”— there are no flashing lights, dancers or love songs on this line-up. It has been a bumpy ride for not only Pritzker but for his team who has tried to steer folks back to the most important topic of discussion—how will Pritzker help Black folks? Will backroom conversations Mary L. Datcher with faith leaders and Facebook live activists save him in the wake of the damaging comments? For those who are in support of Pritzker, they will stay the course, and for those who are undecided—it is a flip of the coin. According to the most recent We Ask America poll, Daniel Biss has 17.43 percent, while Chris Kennedy has dropped to third in the Democratic gubernatorial race at 11.50 percent. Out of the 811 responses, there is a margin of error of 3.44 percent. Meanwhile, Pritzker still holds the number one spot at 29.79 percent-- but a swooping 37.9 percent are undecided. Guess who is jumping on the Biss bandwagon? Millennials and first-time voters are volunteering to be a part of the progressive movement. Not so much about what they heard on the Blago-Prtizker FBI wiretaps, it’s because they are not in support of the tradition of machine politics. Simeon’s Talen Horton-Tucker (John L. Alexander/The Bigs Visuals)
#TheBIGS Presents: This Week’s Top 5 Hoopers By Eugene McIntosh & Terrence Tomlin Sports by #TheBIGS We are down to the Elite 8 of the CPS city playoffs with the championship taking place Sunday at Chicago State University. Four of The BIGS Top 5 Hoopers will be in action....below we take a look at this weeks entry! 1. Talen Horton-Tucker (Sr- Simeon) - Talow was in his bag last week in wins over Longwood and Corliss respectively. He had 19 pts/10 rebs/8 ast/7 blks over LW and finished with his 2nd triple double of the season (21 pts/10 rebs/10 ast) in a 30 point blowout win over Corliss. The Iowa State commit looks poised and ready to lead the Wolverines to city/state title runs! Last Week’s Rank - #1 2. Ayo Dosunmu (Sr- Morgan Park) - Ayo came back from his injury hiatus on big business! In his 2 games back, he dropped 42 pts/9 rebs on King and a double-double (29 pts/10 rebs) in a win over Prosser. In Ayo’s own words...”I guess I got my swagger back!” The Mustangs will need every last piece of the swagger if they’re eyeing a city/state championship and Ayo is more than capable. Last THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
Week’s Rank - #2 3. Javon Freeman (Sr- Whitney Young) - It was business as usual for Vonno last week. He led the Dolphins to 2 wins as he had 15 pts/5 rebs/5 ast in a win over Clark and 21 pts/10 rebs in a victory over CVS. Young is a different team come playoff time...we’ll see just how far Freeman and Co. can take them! Last Week’s Rank - #4 4. George Conditt (Sr- Corliss) - The big fella had a monster game in an upset win over North Lawndale with 19 pts/19 rebs/7 blks in the 1st round. Simeon was too much for Corliss in round 2 as they lost by 30. Conditt didn’t have his best outing but showed why the Trojans will be a force in the 2A state title run. Last Week’s Rank - #3 5. Xavier Pinson (Sr- Simeon) - The “X-factor” is locked in and ready to contribute in any way to this loaded Simeon squad. He had 18 pts/7 ast and 16 pts/6 ast in Simeon wins over Longwood & Corliss. Now that he’s signed and sealed, he can focus on the task at hand. Last Week’s Rank - #5 Knocking At The Door - Chase Adams (Sr-Orr), Adam Miller (So-Morgan Park), Raekwon Drake (Sr-Orr), Messiah Jones (Sr- Simeon), Dannie Smith (Sr-Orr) www.chicagodefender.com
