New Exhibit Opens at Gallery Guichard The newest exhibit at Gallery Guichard, 436 E. 47th St., opens on Thursday, March 29 from 6-9 p.m. with complimentary admission. The exhibit is titled Heroism and it pays homage to not only individuals, but to communities and moments where great examples of strength and courage have been a transformative light within the chaos of time. These works examine the idea of a distinctive practice of heroism in our society which combats the mind-numbing sensory manipulation that bombards us daily and connects to an ongoing historical campaign of lies and false narratives. Heroism is a visual investigation around the notions of self-identity, inner-power and outer purpose. The featured artists are: Roger Carter, Maxwell Emcays and Raymond A. Thomas. The exhibit is co-curated by Andre Guichard and Raymond A. Thomas. Heroism runs through May 13.

The Black Women’s Expo Partners With Real Times Media to Celebrate Women

On a recent morning, Merry Green stated that there had Green, the founder of the Black been conversations earlier about Women’s Expo, was a little tired connecting. “We (Hiram Jackson, and a little wired, but she had her CEO of Real Times Media, and I] coffee in hand and was ready to go as she organized the final prepara- had talked about this for the last tions for the 2018 Black Women’s year on how we can partner more or build a better relationship/partExpo. nership on Black women expo “I was up at 4:30 this morning specifically, but now we’re partdoing some work, I placed all the nering on this in terms of [broader] orders in for McCormick Place. promotional support.” The booths, carpeting, tables and Real Times Media and The chairs... couraging one another through the struggles. “The Partnership is going to be great. It’s a win-win for both of us because he [Jackson] has his relationships that he’s bringing alongside me and vice versa; I really do think that the sky’s the limit,” Green told the Defender. Green and Jackson have been talking for several years about a collaboration and it ultimately materialized when Green had to find a place for her business to move from her downtown location. “It just so had happened that at the end of the fall of last year (2017)...we had been in our downtown office for 8 years and it was sold so we had to find new office space. Just so in passing I had a standard conversation with Hiram about matters and a couple of weeks later I got a call saying, ‘why don’t you move over here (Real Times’ Chicago Defender building on South King Drive). You know it www.chicagodefender.com

would be closer in proximity to everybody that you’re working with on our events.’” Green’s company, MGPG Events, already produces many events with the Chicago Defender such as, Women of Excellence, Men of Excellence, The Bud Billiken Parade and many more. Green said thus far the decision to move has been great for her company as well as Real Times Media. Green stated, “What I’m finding out, which is making more sense to all of our vendors, it does help being here and they can get here quickly to pick up badges and tickets, that kind of thing, or pay for their exhibitor booth or bring in their application... so it’s been really refreshing to be here on the South Side with The Chicago Defender and work closely with real times media as well.” Black Businesses Can Collaborate

At this time there won’t be any changes in Green’s and Jackson’s working relationship, but they do plan to make The Black Women’s Expo even more extraordinary. Green stated, “I want to do it in a bigger way; when we went down to Atlanta, the Atlanta paper did some promotion with us as well but also with their digital components and with Who’s Who, which is in multiple markets that we will be promoting what we are doing in those 3 markets throughout the country. Real Times Media will bring all of that to the table and we bring a brand that has a long successful track record as well, so the partnership seemed ideal.” The future is bright for Green and Jackson. Even with the common misperception about business connections though, Green has no dispute that they’re already off to a great start. continued on page 4

“We all have been kicking and screaming in terms of African American businesses that we don’t partner as well as everybody else does. We’re afraid of it for some reason; I don’t know if we’ve been taught that way or for some reason we’re hesitant. Our general market counterparts partner all the time and think nothing of it. It’s about business, but we want you to know us, we want to like you. I think that what we’re doing with Real Times and the Defender, we should be doing more in terms of partnership. We’re trying to help each other.” Also, this year for the first time in the city of Chicago, The Black Women’s Expo has appointed its first African American show strategist Glen Charles. Glenn Charles is the President/CEO of his company “Show Strategy;” he is the first Black general services contractor that will be producing the Black Women’s Expo. Charles is also a Chicago native born and raised in Englewood. Green stated, “We were able for the first time to work with an 4 March 28 - April 3, 2018

African American company; our show is 24 years old and we’ve worked with some great companies. I think that’s pretty good to finally have that happen.” 2018 Black Woman’s Expo And Green promises that this year’s expo is even bigger and more enhanced. Toyota is a new title sponsor for Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta. Green said, “Sponsors such as ComEd, The Illinois Lottery, The Chicago Defender, United Airlines etc. make it possible to bring in the speakers and entertainers by providing all the airline tickets; our media partners like I Heart Radio and V-103. WGCI, Inspiration 1390, without them, we probably wouldn’t have what we need for our audience and the relationship for entertainment/artist that we go after.” BMO Harris bank is also a sponsor at the Black Women’s Expo and it sponsors two sessions on financial literacy for women as well. This year there will be conversations about #Metoo, and on Saturday April 7, 2018 there will be a town hall meeting entitled “Enough is Enough.” There will be a panel of people talking about

sexual harassment, pay equality and all those things that we know currently exist and are issues especially for the Black woman. All forums support the overall theme: She Matters-- and they empower, inspire and uplift the Black woman! Green stated, “I think it’s important for women to come together to converse and engage, we will be talking about all of these topics. The Expo is a platform for everything that is going on with us women. That to me is the important reason along with education, it’s not just let’s talk about the things that we don’t want to talk about, it’s also fun. It’s not about just talking about the things that are troubling us, it’s also relaxing and inspiring as well.” The Black Women’s Expo is also kid-friendly. Green shared, “We have a kid’s corner, for the kids to go play and for activities. There will be a jumping bag, face painting, a clown... so it’s really a place where you can bring your children as well if you want to be at the expo for a couple of hours and have some fun. We have a culinary corner now, there will be www.chicagodefender.com

African American chefs that will be showcasing their products and their food, they will be cooking and sampling, DuSable museum, NDigo magazine will be there; the satisfying part about it is that we made the opportunity to get our businesses out there.” Small businesses create rich, diverse, and enticing matters to market to our communities. On the other hand, many small businesses cannot afford marketing/ advertising. Green also stated that not only did she envision The Black Women’s Expo to help women come together to address important issues and unwind but to also help support small business. “When we started the Black Women’s Expo, it was just an expo, now it’s a platform. It’s a way for not only African Americans to connect and engage but for major corporations who are looking to promote themselves to this audience [to engage].” This is also an ideal vehicle for exposure. It has become that inexpensive opportunity for small businesses to showcase their products and services and many of them are jumping on board.

Green said the vendors are as diverse as beautiful Black women; they won’t all be selling the same things. Green states, “It’s not just jewelry, makeup and t-shirts, there will be authors and booksellers, life coaches, hospitals that are doing screenings, The Illinois Department of Public Health, there are galleries, 4-5 artists in an art pavilion... and free health screenings for all of our attendees.” To experience the great new expo and be a part of celebrating Black women, come out Friday, April 6, 2018 to Sunday April 8, 2018 to McCormick Place for the 2018 Black Women’s Expo. Speakers will include Bonnet Chronicles with Tami Roman and critically acclaimed actress Kimberly Elise Neal; music artist Johnny Gill will be performing on Saturday and Gospel Elite, Latice Crawford and Rapper Remy Ma will hit the mainstage Sunday, April 8. Purchase tickets at your local Walgreens for $10 until the show opens on Friday, April 6. Brittney Austin Receives Roosevelt University Social Justice Award Brittney Austin, a Roosevelt University biology major and president of the Black Student Union (BSU) who organizes monthly food drives for the homeless, has received the University’s prestigious Matthew Freeman Social Justice Award. Austin, who hopes to go to medical school after graduating from Roosevelt in May, has been involved in social justice work since the moment she arrived at the University approximately four years ago. “Brittney has a strong passion for social, economic and environmental justice issues and her current position as BSU president has allowed her to emerge as a leader,” said Pamela Thompson-Hill, the director of Multicultural Student Support Services at Roosevelt who nominated Austin for the award. Austin, a resident of Chicago’s West Side, but who grew up in Milwaukee, Wis., has always felt connected to helping others. “Social justice is embedded in my DNA. Issues around communities of color are not something frequently discussed and committing to that change is important to me,” THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

the Mansfield Institute. “I believe she will do great things in making positive change in her community in the future.” As president of BSU, Austin has focused on leading the student organization in represent-

ing the interests and concerns of African-American students on campus by way of political, educational, social and community initiatives. Every third Wednesday of the month, Austin and other members of BSU package food at the University and bring it to the streets of Chicago’s South Loop in partnership with South Loop Campus Ministries. “When it’s warmer out, we usually pack sandwiches, but recently we have been packing soups and walking around to give them to individuals experiencing homelessness within the South Loop area,” said Austin. Besides food drives, Austin spearheaded discussions to discuss ways to alleviate food deserts on the West and South sides of Chicago. She serves as a member of the Student Committee for the American Dream Conference at Roosevelt University, and also cohosts her own radio show, “Know Justice, Know Peace,” which airs at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays at Roosevelt’s radio station, WRBC: The Blaze. COMMUNITY From Rally to Power: The Civic Obligation of Young Black Leaders By Tiffany Dena Loftin (Director, NAACP Youth and College Division) Who would have thought that in less than 15 days, I would have to coordinate and manage 1,000 young, Black student leaders from over 24 cities on 17 buses in the name of gun reform and safety? The reality is, sometimes the work chooses you. I started my new job one day before the mass school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. We’ve got over 650 active and registered NAACP chapters on high school and college campuses across the country. We are the only organization, period, that can reach that many Black, young, organized members. Since February 14, 2018, the day of the Parkland shooting, I have followed these students who have built a national discussion on the safety of young people at school in less than a month. A movement that inspires, convicts and recruits people from across the country and now the world, to an issue that Black folks have been talking about for over a decade. When gun violence happens in White communities, it’s always reported on as a mental issue or because they were racist. When gun violence happens in the Black community, it is because of poverty, underfunded schools, police brutality or gangs. This is necessary to understand because the solution we are fighting for can’t just be regulations against automatic military style weapons. It has to be a holistic solution to make all communities safe. The March for Our Lives is only a march for OUR lives if people meet at the intersection of mass school shootings, community vio-

Tiffany Dena Loftin, the director of the NAACP Youth and College Division, says that Black students have the solutions and the answers. (NAACP) lence, poverty, the War on Drugs, police brutality and White supremacy. From Trayvon Martin to Stephon Clark, this is not the first time we’ve raised the issues of gun violence, but for many reasons, this moment is where we find ourselves with the most leverage of “people power.” When the opportunity presented itself for us to be involved and bring our members, I spoke with

my boss and told him I would only sign up to help build for the “March for Our Lives,” if we got to do two things: First, I wanted to make sure that we weren’t just being used as representation at the march, but that we challenged the mainstream media, march organizers and organizational partners to think about the intersection of gun violence, when it comes to the Black com-

munity. Second, it was important that this moment not turn into just another rally, but real opportunity for us to educate and engage future members about the organization. Because a rally won’t end gun violence, I want my peers and young adults to make the clear connection from this issue to who should be held accountable for systemic and legislative change at

the ballot box. That way, we know we showed up in numbers not just for a great rally, but for the start of a great revolution. It is my belief, that if all of the young folks from this march, the women’s march, the immigration movement and Black Lives Matter joined together for a strategic effort, we could change this country literally overnight. We must use this as a moment to help young Black folks see that if we want real gun reform, if we want better public schools, if we want community policing, then we MUST show up to the ballot box. This demonstration, for the NAACP Youth and College Division, was not a free trip to a rally. It became the moment that we are using to build real power that will impact the political navigation of this country. Black students have the solutions and the answers. We’re going to stop asking to be included in national movements, and just take over. I am grateful to all of the staff, the partners and our donors who have helped make this vision possible. We can only use this moment to create bigger and better local victories for our people. Cheers to the strong and fearless students from every community, who have ever stood up to violence in their communities. This march served s a celebration of your leadership, and a call to action for those looking to change the world. Tiffany Dena Loftin is director of the NAACP Youth and College Division, which serves more than 700 youth councils, high school chapters and college chapters across the United States. Girls 4 Science: Professionals Nurture the Next Generation By Marshelle Sanders Defender Contributing Writer Women’s History month has exposed contributions of many women who are courageous, inspiring and conquerors of new territories. And on Thursday March 15, 2018, girls who participate in the Girls 4 Science program were able to interact with women contributors in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields. Speakers included Mae C. Whiteside, President/CEO of CLK Engineers, LLC, and the honoree for the evening, Dr. Amy Wilson, Sr. Corporate IP, Legal Astellas US LLC. The girls created science experiments and showcased them in the room too; the leaders were able to make comments about the experiments and offer advice and encouragement to the young scientists. Inside the room, a banner captured the essence of girl empowerment and featured girls donned in lab coats conducting experiments. 2018 Award Honoree Dr. Amy Wilson shared that she developed her interest in Biology as a young girl. bachelor’s degree in biology and considered medical school but really decided to move and go to graduate school to focus on the research aspect and I really loved it” Back then, women were not always welcomed in the field of science. Gender bias occurred because of personal values, perceptions and outdated, traditional views about men and women in the workplace. Wilson stated that during her educational journey, she did face some criticism about her career choice. “It happened more so while getting my education,” she recalled. “Science was certainly not a popular [major for women]; I was once told, ‘you know if you do that, you’ll never get married.’ It was not seen as very attractive, to be smart. But once I left (after graduating) and got to New York, it was such an amazing place that nobody really cared about it anymore, everything’s even.” 2018 Guest Speaker Mae C. Whiteside, a Chicago native, developed her interest as a kid, but in high school she saw a teacher do an experiment that pretty much turned her life around. “When I was in high school, I had a chemistry teacher who mixed two solutions together, put them in a beaker and he stirred them together,” she said. “The amusing part about it was both liquids were clear like water and beige nylon pantyhose came out it. I don’t know how the color changed, but it did. That was something that made me say ‘oh wow, when I go to college, I want to study chemistry. Maybe I could create makeup and other necessities.’” Whiteside graduated from Kenwood Academy and got accepted into an East Coast college to major in chemistry. Coming from a single parent home and dealing with financial issues, she couldn’t attend. Whiteside ended up graduating from Illinois Institute of Technology here in Chicago, where she majored in civil engineering. Throughout her college experience, she also struggled with being homeless. Business Owners and Payroll Tax Problems By Constant W. Watson Defender Guest Columnist Let’s be honest. Most business owners don’t wake up in the morning, go to work and say, “I’m not paying my payroll taxes.” One week you might be short of cash. Maybe business is slow or a customer’s check bounces. There are several legitimate issues that can prevent you from paying the IRS. You know you’re a good person. You figure you’ll make it up the next week. But then next week comes and goes, and you realize you still don’t have enough money to make that payroll tax deposit. Eventually, the entire situation starts snow-

balling into an avalanche. Between paying your employees their regular paychecks and paying the IRS the necessary payroll taxes, it can be hard being a small business owner these days. A lot of times when money is short, small business owners pay the employees first. It’s natural to take care of your employees, even if you have to skip paying yourself. Unfortunately, the IRS doesn’t care if you can’t pay your employees, or even if you have to put them out on the street. They don’t care if you can’t collect your receivables, or if your biggest customer just went belly-up. All they care about is this one simple fact: you have

money that belongs to them. After you endure long hold times in hopes of making arrangements by phone, the IRS will ask you for all your personal and financial information—which will ultimately be used to levy your bank accounts, take your receivables and seize your property. Owing 941 payroll taxes is a different animal than owing 1040 income taxes and can turn into a criminal matter quickly. That’s because the money you owe them for payroll taxes has already been deducted from your employees’ paychecks for withholding purposes. To put it simply, it’s not your money to begin with, and the IRS looks at this as if you stole from them. The IRS

gives your employees credit for the withholdings and fully expects you to pay this amount over to the IRS at the same time you pay your employees. The smartest thing you can do to protect your business and family is to have someone represent you—an expert who deals with the IRS for a living. Not only can they protect you from the IRS calling and showing up at your door, they may be able to get those penalties reduced. In some cases, they can have them completely removed. You’ve worked hard to keep your business open. You don’t have to wait until the IRS has seized your accounts, closed your business and added on penalties to get the

help you need. You have the right to be represented. Remember, for every tax problem, there’s a solution. Constant W. Senate Lawmakers Seek to Gut Fair Housing By Charlene Crowell NNPA Newswire Columnist In just a few weeks, civil rights and housing advocates will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act. Just six days after the assassination of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Congress passed the law on April 10, 1968. On the following day, President Lyndon Baines Johnson’s signature made it unlawful to discriminate in housing sales, rentals and finance. Although race, color, religion and national origin were the original protected classes, in later years, the Fair Housing Act was amended to include gender, people with disabilities and families with children. With each revision, businesses such as banks, and other lenders, realtors, landlords, insurance companies—even governments that previously used zoning and restrictive covenants to deny housing access—were all obliged to adhere to new standards of inclusion. Fast-forward 50 years, and much of Black America and other communities of color still find that the promise of fair lending remains just that. Our collective experiences as a people provide painful reminders of how full and equal access to credit—particularly in mortgage lending—remains an unfulfilled promise. These long-standing concerns have somehow failed to be included in a new draft legislative proposal on Capitol Hill. In the name THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

“Millennials and people of color deserve the opportunity to pursue their own American Dreams. And existing homeowners, especially older Americans need buyers when they are ready to downsize or retire. The financial glue connecting these generations is affordable mortgage credit.” –National Urban League President Marc Morial of housing finance reform, a working proposed bill by Senators Bob Corker of Tennessee and Mark Warner of Virginia would eliminate the current requirement of a “duty-to-serve” all markets, particularly those like communities of color and rural areas. Instead, the promise of inclusion would be replaced with the vague business judgment of a so-called “guarantors’ decision.” If the Corker-Warner housing reform plan is signed into law, government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs), Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, would be eliminated and fair lending requirements could be weakened. We’re talking trillions of dollars being affected by such a so-called reform without any assurance that fair housing promises made half a century ago will remain. At the end of 2016, the GSEs—Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, along with Ginnie Mae, the Government National Mortgage Association (GNMA), together held $16.7 trillion in mortgages on the nation’s secondary market. It’s the kind of policy development that usually fails to attract

major headlines but affects literally millions of unsuspecting potential homeowners across the country. Once mortgage applicants are approved for loans, the bulk of them are sold to the secondary market, most often to Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. Their sale enables the original lender to free up capital to make more loans to consumers. Fortunately, the National Urban League and the Center for Responsible Lending joined forces to oppose this proposal before it can pick up more lawmaker support. A report co-authored by the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) and National Urban League critiques this Senate proposal and criticizes recently published papers supporting it. The report titled “Senate GSE Reform Proposal: A Blow to Affordable Housing and Harmful to the Overall Housing Market,” calls for a system that supports opportunity for current and future generations to achieve homeownership. It also criticizes the current legislative proposal as reserving homeownership only for those who are financially well off. “Although much of the houswww.chicagodefender.com

ing market has recovered in recent years, many Americans have either not benefited or have even lost ground,” said National Urban League President Marc Morial. “Millennials and people of color deserve the opportunity to pursue their own American Dreams. And existing homeowners, especially older Americans need buyers when they are ready to downsize or retire. The financial glue connecting these generations is affordable mortgage credit.” Morial is right. This year, new discriminatory housing and lending lawsuits in Sacramento and Houston are reminiscent of earlier ones filed in Baltimore, Los Angeles, Memphis, Philadelphia, and other locales. When fair housing problems persist with 50 years of civil rights laws, consumers cannot afford a rollback of robust existing oversight and enforcement. Not that long ago, taxpayers bailed out risky and ill-advised private sector practices that targeted Blacks and Latinos for high-cost, risky mortgage loans that were designed to fail. Our communities bore the brunt of the 7.8 million

foreclosures and a trillion dollars in lost wealth. If housing reforms are to be enacted, those reforms need to open opportunities to all credit-worthy borrowers with strong enforcement. Civil rights leaders, housing advocates and others will not stand by to witness the repeal of key public interest mandates that enable mortgage credit to be available in all regions of the nation. Replacing the public interest mandate with weak incentives will greatly harm the overall housing market. The entities under assault are Freddie Mac, the acronym for the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation and Fannie Mae, the name given to the Federal National Mortgage Association. “Our recent housing past is replete with risk that eventually harmed consumers, communities, and the entire economy,” said CRL President Mike Calhoun. “A doubtful structure of guarantors awarded unenforceable duties is simply not in our nation’s best interest. Now as the 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act nears, housing finance reform should embrace housing affordability, taxpayer protection, and a duty-to-serve all markets and all credit-worthy borrowers.” Charlene Crowell is the Center for Responsible Lending’s Deputy Communications Director. Through the partnership, urban youth with an emphasis on young women and girls will have access to 564 national wildlife refuges and nearly 100 national hatcheries in the U.S., as well as internships and career opportunities. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service works with others to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. because everything that supports the survival of human beings is dependent on it. It is simply the only home of mankind, making it the most important aspect in life. In addition to providing access to STEM education and activities, the partnership seeks to help youth develop a personal connection with nature, understand the importance of conserving the natural world for future generations, and encourage healthful living. The partnership also aligns to the organization’s “Zetas Have Heart” initiative by encouraging the use of hiking trails as a part of one’s everyday exercise regime. Noemi Lujan-Perez, a sorority member who works with ECODiversity, stated “Go out and enjoy wildlife… many of us (African Americans) think that it’s not on our radar.” Last year on May 20, sorority member and Chicago native Re-

nee S. Byrd went to a refuge for Zeta day. “We took our youth to a migratory bird base celebration where we got to go out into the preserve where they were able to learn about different birds and go for a walk through the woods.” Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was founded in 1920 on the belief that the social nature of sorority life should not overshadow the real mission for progressive organizations to address societal mores, ills, prejudices, poverty, and health concerns of the day. The international organization’s 125,000+ initiated members, operating in more than 850 chapters, have given millions of voluntary hours to educate the public, provide scholarships, support organized charities, and promote legislation for social and civic change. The Value of Black Women Friendships By Marshelle R. Sanders Defender Contributing Writer At some point everyone has a choice of the people they want in their life, but, what is it about Black women not being able to get along with each other? In a society that works so hard to bring Black women down, shouldn’t we at least be able to depend on one another for support and encouragement? Maybe you would say past friendships were riddled with one-upmanship, jealousy, competition, pettiness and deceit. It’s human nature to go either way but the assumption that we cannot be friends is bias and ignores the fact that many Black women can have wholesome and vibrant friendships with other Black women. Friendship is having concern for another person or group of people, and it involves intimacy to some degree. We have friends who help shape us properly but then again, you’ve heard of the saying “birds of a feather flock together.” Can you honestly say why you choose to be around each friend you have? Is this friendship(s) for leisure,

Hopefully it’s a group of fun-loving Queens who love and respect each other. convenience, or quality? There are various kinds of relationships and ways to love our friend(s). At the end of the day, it all boils down to the mindset and what you want to see grow from each friendship. Why do some people hit it off immediately while others do not? A lot of it has to do with assessment of likeness, immediacy, knowledge and reciprocity that influence with whom we create relationships. It is a fact that the reality TV show world portrays many undesirable stereotypes of Black women friendships. Is it these negative stereotypes that create false opinions of Black women for people to perceive? We fight all the time, we lack kindness, we backstab, etc., which can make other people assume we are all the same and act the same way. Not facts. We can celebrate each other,

motivate and tell it like it is in a genuine way. The representation in certain media subjects also shows that we can accept each other and are willing to forgive each other for any mistakes that will be caused through the friendship. Whether it’s a birthday party, wedding, baby shower, Black women can turn up together exceptionally well. What happens when we all hear, Cash Money Records taking over for “99” and “2000”? Hopefully it’s a group of fun-loving Queens who love and respect each other. It is not an easy task but there are a few key points to help main-

tain friendships. Share the spotlight Conversation requires active and constructive listening. However, if you’ve ever seen two people trying to talk to each other at the same time, you’ll know that listening is just as important. Take turns talking so that everyone feels heard. Boundaries In each group or duo friendship, there may be the over dramatic drama queen or “better than thou” attitude but you love them regardless (flaws and all, right?). If you’re hanging onto these friendships due to long history or admiration, serious boundaries should still be set. If tensions escalate, it may be time to address the issue head on. Practice first on what you would like to say successfully and have the talk with them privately.

Handle Issues It may seem easier to walk away from a friendship than address an important issue. But, working through such problems and making amends is valuable for selfcare. Remain calm and do not blame each other for anything. Accept that each other’s perspective is different, but not wrong. Be willing to apologize and forgive. If you truly feel the friendship is over, let it go peacefully and move forward in life. Black women can be friends with each other; just like anything else, it takes effort and time with each other. Instead of finding flaws in each other, find affirmations and the beauty in your Sista. Let’s start to compliment and uplift each other genuinely. Continue to love your Flosse Posse, Act like a Lady, Think Like a Man Tribe, Set it off, Issa and Molly or just Oprah and Gayle friendship. Through the good and bad times, be good to each other. Nobody has time for Fake love. Look at the friendships in your life and evaluate them based on how those friendships are supporting you, fulfilling you, and bringing happiness into your life.

Work Life Balance for Women #TheStruggle Marshelle R. Sanders Defender Contributing Writer Whether you’re a working woman with a family or a single woman on the horizon of her career, how do you find time to unwind? For eras, women have been designated the backbone of the family and remarkable leaders. Many women have excelled through their career path with determination and persistence. According to the Guardian. com, in 2011, for the first time, women in the United States made slightly more than half the workforce. There are (some) high-profile women chief executives. There is a small but increasing number of female presidents. So, when is it the career-minded, hardworking woman’s time for self-love and care? Work–life balance is organizing time between career and ambition and lifestyle habits that you enjoy, from exercising, mental/spiritual support, family time, vacations and simply me time for yourself. There was a time when the boundaries between work and 16 March 28 - April 3, 2018

Work–life balance is organizing time between career and ambition and lifestyle habits that you enjoy, from exercising, mental/spiritual support, family time, vacations and simply me time for yourself. home were clear. Today, however, work is likely to invade your personal life — and sustaining a work-life balance is no straightforward task. It’s no secret that the modern-day “Super Woman” can become drained. The beneficial idea of working is that you learn to deliver good performance, speak up and express thoughts and ideas clearly, directly, and with respect for others and for the work of the team. Successful women discover how much they truly believe in themselves since the industry is always changing. Even as an entrepreneur you constantly must keep up and innovate. We read books, go to workshops and are willing to learn from others. On the other hand, if you work too hard and spend too many hours at your job (even if you work from home), you will have no time

and energy left to take proper care of yourself. Increased expectations can stress us out. The essential part of work is the aspect of achievement; without a certain amount of it, we would never execute at all. Yet when chasing achievement, the chances of a breakdown are real. Even if you are busy all the time, take time out for yourself. Work hard but bear in mind your body must recharge to keep going. Take time for yourself and mind. When we feel healthy and vibrant, we have the capacity to make our dreams a reality. Try some of these simple ways to maintain balance in your life: After work social: Perhaps some coworkers keep asking to hang out after work. If it is a small group, going could help release anxiety from the day. Be mindful to not get too personal about other www.chicagodefender.com

employees or your personal life. Hang out for an hour, have a drink or two and laugh together about upbeat themes. Exercising: You don’t necessarily have to go to the gym to work out. Break out the yoga mat in the living room and watch a YouTube video of your choice to get you moving. If you enjoy going to the gym or just outside for a walk and fresh air, make a determined schedule and go. Family Day: Mom wants to go to the grocery store and brunch; your significant other and kids want to go to the circus. If this sounds about right, or whatever circumstance you have, plan a day to just hang out with the family, inside or outside of the home. Spiritual: Life can get very hard sometimes. Women deal with discouragement, fear, broken hearts, passing of a loved one--daily.

Whatever your faith, we still need to have time to clear our thoughts and bring positivity to our hearts and minds to keep living; this may even occur via a visit with a therapist or respected spiritual guidance. Solo Dolo: Spending time alone is so incredibly important. Some women may think it’s weird but sometimes being around people all the time can be exhausting. You need time to do things on your own. Catch up on your shows, get your nails done, grab dinner at your favorite restaurant. No shame in the game when you’re going solo. Can a woman have it all and still take care of herself spiritually, physically and mentally? Of course! Enjoy your life and the fruits of your labor because tomorrow is never promised. Don’t waste any moment of regret. The key to success is to make smart choices in your career and tasks, so that you can elevate in life. Work life balance is about knowing what tasks you are good at and delegating the rest. Fuel yourself with creativity and motivation and continue to be the Queen that you are. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

On The Front Porch: Do You See What I See?

By Shanita Baraka Akintonde 12 voices “You better represent--” is a refrain I grew up hearing. It often fluttered from between my mother’s pursed lips as she stood majestically over my head, a steaming hot comb held high in one hand, akin to a maestro about Shanita Baraka to conduct Akintonde a symphony. I sat in our kitchen’s rendition of an orchestra pit, legs dangling from atop a chair of stacked yellow-page phonebooks. Mom would focus on my hair edges, paying particular attention to the “kitchen” at the nape of my neck. Crescendo! This ritual was conducted in advance of important occasions such as school picture day or birthday celebrations. Whatever the affair, the evening almost always concluded with dinner at Red Lobster restaurant, my throbbing head a thing of the past. Nothing beats burnt ear lobes better than THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

buttered biscuits and battered shrimp! “You better represent” was a phrase that dashed across my father’s tongue as he pushed his long frame into his worn recliner, its taupe-colored leather, making it hard to tell where the chair began and his limbs ended. Daddy’s words were a doting directive. He said it whether I was asking for feedback on a student council presidential bid or permission to hang out with friends. The word “represent” has always had weighted meaning, not only in my family but within the Black community as a whole. It means-- do your background, social group and in many cases, your entire race, proud. Today, the word “representation” has been adopted by white women, particularly in Hollywood, via the #METOO movement. But despite #METOO being founded by a Black woman, activist Tarana Burke, for the majority of Black women, “MeToo” is not a phrase being shouted from the roof tops. As we conclude Women’s History month, I’d like to offer my perspective on the word representation, as both a woman and a Black person. Black Women in Media While actresses such as Viola

Davis, Kerry Washington, Taraji Henson and Angela Bassett are household names in U.S. films and/or television, Black actresses overall are severely underrepresented in these venues. Whereas actors such as Jamie Foxx, Will Smith and newcomer Chadwick Boseman are regularly cast in leading roles in film genres that range from biographies, romantic comedies, action and sci-fi, Black actresses seem to be pigeon-holed into stereotypical roles. A recent study conducted by The American Advertising Federation (AAF) in collaboration with Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. entitled, “Reality TV: Entertaining, But No Laughing Matter,” examines this issue. Their research uncovered the following Black female personas in media: •The Hood Rat •The Combined Bitch/Combination Hyper-Independent Black woman •The Jezebel •The Desperate Single/Combination Hyper-Independent Black Woman •The Angry Black Woman •The Mammy •The Tragic Mulatto •The Bible Thumper Visit http://www.aaf.org/_ www.chicagodefender.com

PDF/AAF%20Website%20Content/000_Research/Research_ Whitepaper_WatchParty.pdf for the full report. I couldn’t agree more and as president of The Alliance for Women in Media, Chicago Chapter, and faculty advisor to R.O.A.R.R. student organization, I am working to consciously change the face of Black women in media—one image at a time. Black “Queens” It was recently reported that a little two-year old girl named Parker Curry was so enthralled by a portrait of First Lady Michelle Obama that she stood completely still while staring at it during a recent family visit to the Smithsonian. It’s reported that she thought she was looking at a “queen.” For starters, getting a two-yearold child to stand still for more than TWO SECONDS is a feat itself. However, the symbolic nature of this moment points to something much deeper— representation matters. Little Black girls (and boys) can’t be what they don’t see. That is why it is essential that they be shown positive images versus constant inundation of depressing, denigrating, displaced and disjointed images of people that look like them, plastered across everything from billboards to media broad-

casts. Wally Snyder, Executive Director of the Institute for Advertising Ethics and a member of the AAF white paper team, puts it this way: “When we depict people unfairly, it has a major impact on our society. Our value system is supposed to be equality, fairness and objectivity. It’s supposed to be inclusive and not exclusive. So when these negative images are portrayed, for example, about people of color, it hurts our society.” Amen Mr. Snyder. That’s why I teach, preach, speak and write about the need for Blacks, particularly Black women, to be represented better. I, for one, plan to do so in this column, right here, On The Front Porch. Aeriel Williams of Showtime’s “The Chi” Weighs In On The “Jordan vs Lebron” Debate By Terrence Tomlin & Eugene McIntosh Sports by #TheBIGS When it comes to sports debates these days, there’s one question that never fails to get under Chicagoans’ skin. Jordan or Lebron? For us, there’s no debate. The Bulls six championships represent one of the most dominant times in sports history and are a symbol of MJ’s iconic career. From the shoes we wear, to yelling out “Jordan” before we shoot our jumpers, Michael Jordan is a Chicago legend in every sense of the word. For everybody else, Lebron represents maybe the closest we’ve ever seen somebody come to the greatness of Jordan. He defies everything we’ve come to think of as normal in the game. His physical attributes, his basketball IQ and his eye-popping stats suggest that he’s in the conversation but basketball purist know that when it comes to moments where individuals make the impossible possible, Jordan reigned supreme. Local Chicago actress Aeriel Williams, who plays “Shante” on Showtime’s new hit show “The Chi”, took some time out of her busy schedule to talk about this hot topic and she had one mes-

Local Chicago actress Aeriel Williams who plays “Shante” on Showtime’s new hit show “The Chi” sage for you Lebron heads! “Stop.” Check out our conversation below! The Bigs: What’s your take on the “Jordan vs Lebron” debate? AW: I really feel like it’s generational. If you’ve seen Michael in his prime, the man was just, wow. There’s no comparison. To me, it’s like comparing Chris Brown to Michael Jackson. They come from

two different generations and are just two different sources of greatness. So, Lebron is great in his own way but Michael is iconic in his own way. So, I almost feel like we need to recognize them separately but they’re both great. The Bigs: Exactly, it would be easier to compare if they played in the same era.

AW: Yes, Lebron wasn’t laying when Mike was playing. That’s really the discussion. If Lebron and Mike were playing during the same time then maybe there would be a more balanced debate but since they weren’t we just have to appreciate Lebron for who he is and stop this “is he better than Jordan?” debate….and stop teasing “Space

Jam 2”. That belongs to MJ! The Bigs: Why is “The Chi” important in terms of telling authentic Chicago stories? AW: We’re lucky to have “The Chi” because it comes from the perspective of the people. We’re not relying on other folks telling our story. As long as it’s authentic, folks should pay attention.

Reaching for the Sky Chicago Sky head coach Amber Stocks gets ready for her second year with the team By Eugene McIntosh & Terrence Tomlin Sports by #TheBIGS Amber Stocks has a lot to look forward to entering her second season as Chicago Sky head coach. The team finished 9th (1222) and 3 games shy of a playoff berth last year. Coming off a season where they set a WNBA record with the most team assists and also led the league in 3PT%, the Sky has 2 lottery picks in the 2018 WNBA draft. Coach Stocks has big time experience. She played 4 years at the THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

University of Cincinnati and was also a standout in track. She was strength and conditioning coach at Notre Dame, a student of the late great Pat Summit and spent many years as an assistant with the Xavier Musketeers. Stocks was an assistant coach for the 2016 WNBA champion Los Angeles Sparks before she decided to try her hand at the helm here in Chicago. The Bigs: Coach talk about the style of play you’ve implemented.... Coach Amber Stocks: Playing inside out, spacing the floor and getting the best shot possible. We set a WNBA record in team

assists. “Sloot” (Courtney Vandersloot) and “Quigs” (Allie Quigley) had great years. Along with WNBA All-Stars last season) The Bigs: How do you account for losing a special talent like Chicago’s own Cappie Pondexter? Coach Amber Stocks: With Cappie headed to LA, everyone has more of a role to fill. The draft will be huge in our development for year two. The Bigs: How can the Sky attract a more loyal fan base? Coach Amber Stocks: Winning! Everyone loves a winner, right? We’re putting the right piecwww.chicagodefender.com

some excitement. Coach Amber Stocks: Yes I’ve heard great things about the Arena and I hope the city is excited for the upcoming season. March 28 - April 3, 2018 23
