CITY NEWS Seven of DuSable Museum’s Trustees Resign; Raises Questions The resignation of seven members of the board of trustees at the DuSable Museum, including Chance the Rapper, recently raised questions. Seven trustees, representing one-third of the museum’s board, recently resigned, including Eric Whitaker, Wilbur Milhouse III, Kimberly McCullough-Starks, Michael Gibson, Chance the Rapper and his father, Ken Bennett, and the board’s chair Joyce Johnson-Miller. Chance the Rapper tweeted that he resigned because his schedule was too busy and he couldn’t make meetings. The Defender was unable to reach any other board members at press time to find out their reasons for resigning. The DuSable Museum issued the following statement: We are grateful to all of our Du Sable trustees, those remaining on the board and those who are departing… [we] thank them for their dedication and
Chance the Rapper service to this great institution, and have been assured of their continued support of the mission of DuSable Museum. That mission – to educate all people through African American history, art and culture
-- is more important than ever before, and we are in a climate of change and transformation. We will take this opportunity to continue to build our board, a process that’s already underway, and we’re excited about the changes to come. Founded by Dr. Margaret Burroughs in 1961, the DuSable Museum of African American History is the nation’s oldest independent Black museum, a Smithsonian Institution Affiliate since 2016, and an icon not only for our African-American community but all of Chicago. We are a recognized institutional leader and a major component of the renaissance of Chicago’s South Side. Most nonprofits, especially arts and culture organizations, are struggling to raise funds and we are no different. We are driving forward and focusing our efforts, building upon our amazing recent accomplishments and successes, and moving steadfastly towards the future.”

Life After Graduation By Marshelle R. Sanders Defender Contributing Writer
Graduation season is here. As announcements pour in and graduation pictures fill your timeline and Instagram feed, there’s a definite celebratory mood in the air. Many high school and college students dream of this moment when entering school. They work hard, they have fun, and many get frustrated, but it all boils down to one glorious moment: Graduation Day. Graduation is indeed the day graduates celebrate with family, friends, classmates and faculty members. But once the celebrations end, graduates are often left wondering: What’s next? What am I going to do with my life moving forward after receiving my diploma or degree? More education is an option— one Maya Shelton is taking advantage of. The Governors State University 2018 graduate, Shelton received her bachelor’s degree in Theatre and Performance Art Studies. She is now preparing to continue her education at the New York School of Film and Acting at the school’s Los Angeles location. “I’m transitioning from theater to film, having them both [bachelor’s and master’s degrees] will help open more doors for career THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

do the work after graduation. Her office helps students with resumes, writing cover letters and internships to prepare them for the ultimate graduation goal—a career. “We have mock job interviews; we assist with a lot of resumes critiques, LinkedIn profiles, we get students who come in before and after graduation anxious because they want to make sure they have a solid plan, so we’re here to help in any transition period.” Anderson said many students she has observed are a “nervous wreck” as they look for jobs and wonder what the future holds. Knowing that this time can be hard for graduates, Anderson says, Governors State welcomes alumni to come in for job placement help or any other assistance. The offer at Governors State is helpful because some students don’t focus on placement before graduation because they are focusing on finishing papers and getting to graduation day. Having the option to lean on the placement office after graduation—when the anxiety of completing college has subsided—can be very beneficial. For those transitioning from high school, choosing a college can be an overwhelming task. Some students choose the community college route before heading off to a university. Depending
While we’re in graduation mode, many high schoolers have already decided on which college to attend, but others may need a little help with their choices. And many rising seniors, those completing their junior year now, are looking toward their future and trying to decide which college may be best. There’s no one-size fits-all advice on choosing a college, but there are steps you can take to find a good fit. Use this tool to start your journey. Some people choose based on an “experience.” Then others determine by type, size, location, majors, cost and more. Do you picture your college campus surrounded by nature, in a city or somewhere in between? Each campus setting offers benefits and opportunities. The change from high school to college can be very hectic. Deciding which school to go to only adds additional stress. So many factors must be considered in trying to reach a decision, like the reputation of the school, the resources it has to offer and location. HBCU (Howard University, Texas Southern University, Spelman, Morehouse) History Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are institutions of higher education in the United States that became established before 1964 with the intention of primarily serving the African American community. They have always allowed admission to students of all races. The founding of HBCUs created an opportunity for minorities to attend schools explicitly built to fulfill their educational, cultural and community needs. HBCUs give students the opportunity to learn in an atmosphere that affords African American students many benefits such as cultural exposure, diversity and becoming a part of a community whose majority includes members of a people with a shared and challenging history. Many parents or students decide to exclusively attend a predominantly White school to give themselves a chance for exposure to different cultures and opportunities. My biggest supporters were my family and my NJROTC instructors who helped me a lot and helped me become a better person, so I thank them.” Community colleges also offer services to help students navigate the waters and explore their next steps after graduation. BUSINESS Five Ways Small Business Owners Plan Intelligently For Retirement By Troy Bender Defender Guest Writer Preparing financially for retirement can be complicated for anyone, but for small business owners the process often poses even more challenges. Teachers, police officers, firefighters and other government employees generally receive a pension. The corporate world can offer benefit plans or matching contributions. But entrepreneurs can’t automatically rely on any of those features; instead they have to put saving/investing plans in place for themselves and their employees. And often, Small Business Owners (“SBOs”) aren’t preparing sufficiently for retirement. A survey of SBOs, conducted by BMO Wealth Management, showed 75 percent had less than $100,000 saved for retirement. “Small business owners have to do it on their own, and many aren’t preparing properly,” says Troy Bender, President and CEO of Asset Retention Insurance Services Inc. “Many feel like they will never make it, but they can. The idea is to simply start.” Bender lists five ways small business owners can wisely plan for retirement, which include: •Decide how much to save each month. An ideal average for saving per month is 15 percent of your pay, Bender says. If that seems too much at first, you might ease into it. “To begin, you may start with 5 percent and then ramp up 2 to 3 percent each year,” Bender says. As a better gauge, he says, note that an employee with a 401(k) can contribute up to $18,500 of their salary for 2018 if they’re less than 50 years old.
Someone aged 50 and over with a 401(k) can save $24,500 a year. A good goal is to try to match these amounts annually. •The SEP IRA. As defined by the IRS, a Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) plan provides business owners with a method to contribute toward their employees’ retirement as well as their own retirement savings. “It doesn’t have the start-up and operating costs of a conventional 401(k) or profit-sharing employee plan,” Bender says. ”Your business pays no taxes on annual earnings, as it grows tax-deferred. •Rule of 100. “Retirement accounts that offer the highest return may seem ideal, but a business owner who goes down this path can be easily overwhelmed
and stressed,” says Bender. “As a business owner, you generally already have enough stress, which can manifest in so many ways. A basic rule to follow is known as the Rule of 100.” Under that rule, you subtract your age from 100, and what’s left over is the percentage of your portfolio you put into investments with some risk. For example, if you are 50, then 50 percent of your assets would be at risk and 50 percent would be allocated conservatively – placed in a bank account, or perhaps in an annuity, for example, to provide income for you in your future. •Life insurance. A small business owner with a family should have 10 times their annual net income in life insurance. Bender says. “The life insurance can
be set up to provide a Tax-Free income in the future, too, that a small business owner can draw from,” Bender says. •Key Person Insurance. Like having life insurance to provide financial help for your family when you pass away, a SBO may want to consider “Key Person Insurance.” The death benefit offered through “Key Person Insurance” helps ensure that should a “key person” within a company pass away, there will be continuity of the business for its employees (and customers). “You need to save for the necessity stream as well as the discretionary stream,” Bender says. “You should get the basics down and really look at covering your lifestyle, so you can look back and smile from the thousands of hours
you worked owning a business.” Troy Bender, President and CEO at Asset Retention Insurance Services Inc., can be found at (www.asset-retention.com), and has more than 30 years of experience in the insurance and annuity industry. He started his career in the financial services industry as a bond and stockbroker with Merrill Lynch and then moved to Prudential Securities. In 1999, he started Asset Retention Insurance Services Inc. Bender also co-authored the book “The Ultimate Success Guide” with best-selling author Brian Tracy, and Troy has been featured on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox affiliates around the country, and has been in interviewed in several publications
How to Claim Tax Deductible Charitable Donations By Constant Watson III Defender Guest Columnist If taxpayers give money or goods to a charity in 2018, they may be able to claim a deduction on their federal tax return. Here are some important IRS facts about charitable donations: 1. Qualified Charities. Taxpayers must donate to a qualified charity. Gifts to individuals, political organizations or candidates are not deductible. To check the status of a charity, use the IRS Select Check tool. 2. Itemize Deductions. payers must file Form 1040 and itemize deductions. File Schedule A, Itemized Deductions, with a federal tax return. Effective January 1, 2018 for the Tax Year 2018, you can increase your deduction to 60% of your Adjusted Gross Income. 3. Benefit in Return. If taxpayers get something in return for their donation, they may have to reduce their deduction. Taxpayers can only deduct the amount that exceeds the fair market value of the benefit received. Examples of benefits include merchandise, meals, tickets to events or other goods and services. 4. Type of Donation. If taxpay-
ers give property instead of cash, their deduction amount is normally limited to the item’s fair market value. Fair market value is generally the price they would get if the property sold on the open market. If they donate used clothing and household items, those items generally must be in good condition or better. Special rules apply to cars, boats, and other types of property donations. There are also some tax benefits and strategies to consider about donating stock to a qualified charity. 5. Noncash Charitable Contributions. Complete section-B for noncash property contributions more than $5,000 and include a qualified appraisal to the return. The type of records you must keep depends on the amount and type of your donation. To learn more about what records to keep, see Publication 526, Charitable Contributions. 6. Donations of $250 or More. If taxpayers donated cash or goods of $250 or more, they must have a written statement from the charity. Evening of Impact: Rape Victim Advocates 15th Annual Spring Celebration Honoring Tarana Burke By Sharice Bradford Defender Contributing Writer Last week, an Evening of Impact: Rape Victim Advocates 15th Annual Spring Celebration hosted at Morgan Manufacturing in the West Loop provided an opportunity to not only get to know more about the important work that Rape Victim Advocates does, it provided an opportunity for people to get involved and show their support. The evening included a silent auction, a short program with guest speakers and an opportunity to honor Tarana Burke, founder of the #MeToo movement. The evening also included a live auction to fund the programs, initiatives and services offered by Rape Victim Advocates. Rape Victim Advocates (RVA) has been around for over 40 years. Founded by Dr. Natalie Stevens in 1974, the organization is focused on supporting and believing survivors of rape and sexual assault. According to their website: Rape Victim Advocates (RVA) is an independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the healing and empowerment of sexual assault survivors through non-judgmental crisis intervention counseling, individual and group trauma therapy, and medical and legal advocacy in the greater Chicago metropolitan area. RVA provides public education and institutional advocacy in order to improve the treatment of sexual assault survivors and to effect positive change in policies and public attitudes toward sexual assault. Erin Walton, Executive Director of RVA, told the Defender at the event that there is a new strategic direction on the horizon for RVA, which includes a new name Resilience. The mission of the organization is moving beyond supporting survivors to having an impact in the community. This can be done by introducing sexual assault prevention to Chicago communities in a new way. This includes public policy, school and community education and outreach. Walton says that it is imperative for survivors to know that they can thrive. Walton underscores that RVA is dedicated to empowering survivors, believing survivors and educating the community. These are the initiatives that are central to the heart of the organization, which supports the new strategic direction of the organization which will be official July, 1, 2018, 6 May 30 - June 5, 2018

When it comes to statistics on rapes and assaults, Chicago outnumbers the national average. The Austin neighborhood in Chicago currently has more sexual assaults than any other community in Chicago. This underscores the need for organizations like RVA as well as the services they provide. According to Walton, when she learned that an African American woman, Tarana Burke, was the founder of the #MeToo movement, she knew she wanted to honor her at their annual celebration. Burke has spent more than 25 years working for social justice and advocacy. Her work was the foundation of the #MeToo movement and she is particularly focused on helping young women of color in low income communities find pathways to healing. Receiving the Dr. Natalie A. Stephens Visionary Award from RVA, Tarana Burke reminded the audience of the importance of “finding your tribe” when doing difficult work. In 2006, Tarana Burke began the Just Be In Movement, an initiative about survivors supporting survivors. During her acceptance speech, Burke encouraged us to follow our instincts, reexam-

Proposed Construction in Pullman Neighborhood Under Fire By Deborah Bayliss Defender Contributing Writer Emotions are still running high between Pullman residents regarding a live-work artist loft space proposed for the historic community. Some residents would like to see the project move forward, while others say those in charge of the project have not been fair with the process and that construction on the proposed site would destroy important archaeological remnants. In addition to being a National Monument designated by former President Barack Obama in 2015, Pullman is also a National Historic Landmark. Mark Cassello, president of the Pullman National Monument Preservation Society, (PNMPS) and members of his group say they are not altogether opposed to the project, but are opposed to the way they say the project is being pushed through without the proper required review process that should include proper community outreach. The group also takes issue with the exclusion of African-Americans from the process. They would like some compromise on the scale of the proposed new structure, and they say that the project would destroy the archaeological remains of a historic tenement building that was torn down in the 1930s. The razed building was one of three structures that made up a three-building, tenement block house complex, the first and only of its kind ever built, historically referred to as “Poverty Row.” The project is a result of a partnership between Pullman Arts, a local organization, Minneapolis-based Artspace Projects, Inc. and Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives, which acquired the site on South Langley Avenue between 111th and 113th Streets. Plans for the project, The Pullman Artspace Lofts, include restoring the two standing buildings and erecting a new structure on the vacant lot between them to build a mixed-use arts community with 38 units of affordable artist housing, work spaces, ground floor gallery and community art spaces. Attempts by the Chicago Defender to reach Artspace executive Andrew Michaelson were unsuccessful by press-time. A May 18 report compiled by the Chicago Department of Fleet and Facility Management (2FM) states, while a number of commenters are opposed to the proTHE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Photo by Deborah Bayliss posed design, the proposed project has undergone a number of revisions over the course of several years to address both community driven and historic preservationist concerns about height, scale, and setback. The proposed project has been reviewed and approved at a federal, state, and local level by agencies responsible for carrying out historic preservation responsibilities. As for the required review process, a “Section 106 review must be completed in accordance with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. Section 106 requires federal agencies to consider the effects of projects they carry out, approve, or fund, on historic on properties. According to Cassello, HUD deemed the first review in 2016 invalid. The Department of Fleet and Facility Management initiated a second review in 2017, and on March 6, 2018, issued a preliminary finding of “No Adverse Effect on the historic community”. A formal “No Adverse Effect” finding was announced during 2FM’s May 15 meeting. If there are written objections after 2FM’s formal determination, 2FM must consult with the objecting parties to resolve disagreements. Cassello and his group had until May 30 to submit
written objections. HUD spokesperson Gina Rodriguez said Tuesday that the 106 Review is still in the public input process and that she therefore cannot comment. A report compiled by 2FM, provided to the Chicago Defender by Brian Berg, spokesperson for Chicago Ald. Anthony Beale, seem to indicate some measures with respect to archaeological remains were taken. The report states in part that in the event unidentified cultural resources are encountered by a city inspector, a contractor, or subcontractor during construction activities within 100 ft. by 100 ft. of the unidentified cultural resource, construction activities will be halted, and the discovery protected from further disturbance. Cassello and his group are calling for an additional 60 days of community outreach with more African-American participation. They also urge residents to write to HUD and 2FM in an effort to bring the developer back to the table. As for African-American exclusion from the project, Dr. Bernadette Tucker, a Pullman resident with deep ties to the Pullman community and member of the PNMPS, said African-American participation is sorely lacking and www.chicagodefender.com
that no African-American organizations are involved. “My grandfather was a Pullman Porter so I have a vested interest in the existence of something that would commemorate the Pullman Porters,” Tucker said. “I’m also a neighborhood resident since 1977 and I’ve been active in the Pullman organizations.” Industrialist and engineer George Pullman (March 3, 1831 – October 19, 1897) designed and manufactured the Pullman sleeping car and founded Pullman for the workers who manufactured it. Pullman also hired African-American men who were former slaves, known as Pullman porters, to staff the sleeping cars. In addition to the link with Pullman porter history, the community is 82 percent African-American. Though the porters did not reside in the tenement houses, they are an integral part of Pullman history. “Every brick in Pullman is a memorial to the men and women who labored for George Pullman and funded his company town,” Cassello stated in a written summary of the Artspace issue. Deborah Jackson resides in North Pullman and is a member of the Pullman Arts Board. Jackson is in favor of the project but agreed
African Americans have not been included in the process. Ann Alspaugh, past president of Pullman Arts, is in favor of the project moving forward and said the project started as a grassroots effort and was always intended as something equitable for all. A May 25 statement issued from Chicago Alderman Anthony Beale (9th Ward) to the Chicago Defender, indicated the $18 million project is moving forward as proposed. “The Pullman Artspaces Loft project is the result of an ongoing collaborative public planning process that started in 2010,” Beale stated. “Everyone involved in the project’s planning and development has listened carefully to the community over that time. As a result, we’re proud that 99 percent of the people in the community support it. The process of transforming a long-vacant lot and two abandoned historic buildings into a new vibrant mixed-use community will begin later this summer.” Cassello and his group say the 99 percent support was for an artist space in general, not specifically for the proposed site. The group plans to submit a second round of written objections to the project this week. May 30 - June 5, 2018 7

New Program Addresses Health Disparities in Chicago By Deborah Bayliss Defender Contributing Writer It’s not a stretch to say that African-Americans face disparities in ways that others do not. Thanks to a $1 million grant from the CVS Health Foundation, the National Urban League partnered with the American Lung Association to roll out a free smoking cessation program in several cities across the country, including Chicago, that will serve African-Americans who face a disproportionate burden of tobacco use and tobacco-related illness. More than 26 percent of African American adults in Chicago use tobacco, which is over the city’s average of 18 percent, according to the American Lung Association. “We are very excited about this,” said Shari Runner, president and CEO of the Chicago Urban League. “Health is not where the Urban League’s focus is. It’s one of those things that came to us and we said absolutely we want to be involved because we think a healthy community is a strong community.” According to the American Lung Association, smoking can cause or worsen numerous diseases and conditions, including lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease and more. Tobacco use is also a major contributor to the three leading
Tobacco use is also a major contributor to the three leading causes of death among African Americans—heart disease, cancer and stroke— and causes 45,000 African-American deaths every year. causes of death among African Americans—heart disease, cancer and stroke— and causes 45,000 African-American deaths every year. Runner added the most important message they want to get out with the American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking® program is the impact of smoking on health. Support for the partnership between the Lung Association and the National Urban League is being provided through Be The First, CVS Health’s, five-year $50 million initiative to help deliver the nation’s first tobacco-free generation. The Lung Association and the National Urban League are among a roster of national organizations that are supporting CVS Health’s campaign to help lower rates of smoking and other tobacco use among teens and young adults.
“We have made tremendous progress against tobacco addiction and the smoking rate is half of what it was in 1964, but not everyone has benefited equally,” said American Lung Association National President and CEO Harold Wimmer. “Some groups have been historically underserved with tobacco control efforts and today have higher tobacco use rates as a result. It’s important that we address this disparity with partners like the National Urban League and CVS Health so that we can prevent and reduce tobacco-related illnesses in all parts of our society.” With the two-year grant, those involved with the program will also address marketing and advertising that big tobacco companies use to target African-Americans, particularly African-American youth. “It’s similar to the advertising for beer and alcohol,” Runner said. “The issue is how to prevent youth
and others from starting to smoke in the first place.” CVS Health Foundation President Eileen Howard Boone shared her thoughts on the program and the partnership. “We recognize that the use and effects of tobacco use in multicultural communities are significant and we want to play a leading role in reducing smoking in these communities,” Howard Boone said. “We are proud to help bring together the tobacco control expertise of the American Lung Association with the multicultural reach of the National Urban League to advance smoking cessation efforts in the African American community and help people on their path to better health by living tobacco-free lives.” National Urban League President and CEO Marc Morial also noted that tobacco marketing that
focuses on African-Americans is an issue that needs to be addressed. “The death rate from smoking-related illnesses is far higher among African Americans, than among the population in general, including lung cancer,” Morial stated. “Some African Americans have an especially hard time quitting because menthol cigarettes – marketed specifically to Black communities – are more addictive, and they do not have access to the best resources to stop smoking. Thanks to this partnership with the American Lung Association and support from the CVS Health Foundation, we can address those barriers and offer support that will help more people become smokefree.” The program is offered in person, online and by telephone. Participants will be given information about building a quit plan, medications that can aid quitting smoking, lifestyle changes that support quitting smoking, how to manage stress and how to overcome a relapse. Anyone interested in receiving support can visit Lung.org/nul or call 1-800-LUNGUSA for more information. “We’re going to start the program and move forward with it and make sure it’s a message that we continue,” Runner said.
Five Ways Cooking Benefits Your Mental State By Chef Zipora Einav Defender Guest Writer It’s no secret that cooking healthy food provides benefits to our bodies, but there’s also evidence that the act of preparing meals can benefit our minds as well. Mental health experts credit cooking with helping to relieve depression, anxiety, eating disorders and other conditions. As various forms of meditation have become in vogue as ways to relax in our busy world, cooking is joining that genre, according to health professionals, working adults and people who cook for a living. “Cooking at its core is comprehensive meditation with the assurance of a good, healthy meal as the reward,” says Zipora Einav, a chef to celebrities and author of 8 May 30 - June 5, 2018
Recipe for a Delicious Life. “Cooking can lift you to a meditative place you often don’t get in the outside world. It starts with the environment you create in your kitchen. Mine is filled with music. Combining cooking with music provides the optimal environment to experience the many benefits of meditation. “However you cook, do it with real peace and genuine happiness for yourself in mind. You’re giving to others; now give some of this to yourself.” Chef Zipora lists five mental health benefits that cooking brings: •Relieves stress. Cooking can clear the head and relax the body. Family therapist Lisa Bahar told Psychology Today that a mindfulness on the moment – kitchen tasks such as chopping and stirring – makes the act of cooking meditative. “You are present in the
task, doing something physical, and not distracted by the stresses of the day,” Zipora says. “It’s a nourishing, centering act that gets you to slow down.” •Gives joy. It’s easy to dismiss cooking as just another household chore, but you may derive joy from cooking that you don’t get from mundane tasks. “Cooking is an innately rewarding experience,” says Zipora. “You can enhance it however you like. Music happens to be the seasoning of my life. Classical puts me in a zone when I’m cooking. When you’re enjoying working in the kitchen and listening to your favorite music, all of a sudden you’re not just cooking, it’s like you’re flying with your feet on the ground. Cooking has all the ingredients of good vibrations.” •Provides better brain health. The clearest link between cooking and mental health is good nutriwww.chicagodefender.com
tion; numerous studies have found compounds like antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins and minerals found naturally in food can help protect your brain. “It’s easier to control the quality of your diet when you prepare much of the food yourself,” Zipora says. •Makes you more creative. Part of the fun of cooking is thinking outside the box. “Cooking should be considered an art, and with new ingredients, you can explore new areas of cooking and surprise your family with a meal that they will have never seen coming,” Zipora says. “Perfect recipes, come up with new ones, and let your creative juices flow.” •Boosts self-confidence. “You feel a strong sense of accomplishment when you’ve prepared something satisfying,” Zipora says. “When you’ve prepared a nice meal for several people, that confi-
dence will surge, and it can spread into other areas of your life. It will inspire you to try new things.” “Cooking without a doubt nourishes your psychological well-being,” Zipora says. “At the end of a long work day, it soothes the soul and the mind.” Chef Zipora Einav (www.chefzipora.com) is an accomplished private chef who has cooked for some of Hollywood’s most notable celebrities – Bob Hope, Jack Nicholson, Mariah Carey, Pierce Brosnan, Scarlett Johansson – and for professional athletes, including former National Football League star Donovan McNabb. Let’s Eat: Krazy Hog Barbecue
Owners Dana and Victor Cooksey.
Krazy Hog Barbecue. By The Black Foodies The Chicagoland area has a long and proud tradition of barbecue joints that produce some of the country’s best barbecue. During the Great Migration, The Black Foodies Black people migrated from the South to the North – from the farms to the factories – looking for a better way of life. Many from the Mississippi Delta settled in Chicago, bringing their version of the “open pit” to the region, and the rest we say is history. Now there is a new player on the Chicagoland barbecue scene. The place is called Krazy Hog Barbecue, located in the far southeast suburbs at 337 East Glenwood Lansing Road, Glenwood, Ill. Owners Victor and Dana Cooksey (husband and wife) told us they both come from a long line of really good cooks and emphasized that most everything at Krazy Hog is made from scratch. With Dana’s family coming from Batesville, Miss., which is just east of the Mississippi Delta, we were really eager to sample some of their menu items. Miss Coretta and I gave Krazy Hog Barbecue a visit on Mother’s Day. A third member of The Black Foodies, my beautiful mother, Marilyn, accompanied us. When we first strolled in, we admired the charming southern décor and immediately smelled the aroma of smoky goodness wafting from THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
the kitchen. Krazy Hog’s offerings come in three sizes: the “Piece,” which is the smallest, the “Plate,” which is medium sized, or the “Platter,” which is the largest. While most barbecue establishments have just one signature sauce, Krazy Hog has five. You can choose from Krazy Original, Magnolia Sweet, Texas Heat, Bama White or Carolina Honey, all representing different regions of barbecue USA. With great anticipation, we decided on the menu items we wanted to sample. Mom went with their number one seller, the pork rib tips; Miss Coretta decided to try the chicken tips, while I sampled the fried chicken wings. Mom’s “piece”-size Rib Tips came with a side of baked beans, a slice of white bread, and she chose the Krazy Original sauce. The order came with a generous portion of rib tips that Mom immediately deemed delicious. The rib tips were masterfully smoked, tender and juicy, with a slightly caramelized outer bark. A self-proclaimed rib tips connoisseur, Mom considered Krazy Hog’s rib tips to be some of the best tips she’d had in years. Not a fan of sauces, Mom ventured out and sampled the Krazy Original sauce. She was pleasantly surprised by the taste of this tomato-based sauce-- its slight tanginess and overall flavor a definite enhancement to the deliciousness of the tips. Mom dared to compare Krazy Hog’s baked beans to her own. “Good, very good,” was her critique, further noting that the smoky bacon rendered an additional flavoring that she really enjoyed. Now, on to Miss Coretta’s “piece”-size Chicken Tips, hand-
cut fries and two barbecue sauces: Sweet Magnolia and Texas Heat. The “piece”-size offered up a mound of chicken tips that could easily feed two. These chicken tips, which resemble pork rib tips in appearance, are smoky, tender bites of barbecue heaven. We just couldn’t stop eating them! The Sweet Magnolia and the Texas Heat are superior condiments for dipping your chicken tips and, of course, you can get it smothered in the sauce of your choice. We just kept switching it up – the Magnolia for a little sweet, the Texas for a little heat. We really appreciated the hand-cut fries, which shows Krazy Hog’s attention to detail. FYI… Krazy Hog has a $3 special on their “piece”-size chicken tips on Mondays. Batting third in the line-up were the Fried Chicken Wings, a side of mac and cheese, with two chosen sauces of Carolina Honey and Bama White. There is nothing quite like a properly executed fried chicken wing. Krazy Hog certainly delivers with their crunchy exterior and moist interior, indicative of proper frying temperature. The seasoning on the wings was great and the two sauces: in the words of R&B crooner, Johnny Gill, “My, my, my!” The mustard-based Carolina Honey packs a flavor punch akin to a Mike Tyson uppercut. The mustard is tangy and mouthwatering, while the honey keeps the sauce from being too bold. The mayo-based Bama White is creamy, full of great seasonings, and just enough horseradish to give it a nice kick. The mac and cheese was delightfully cheesy, with perfectly cooked pasta, and had light notes of garlic. Yum, yum! www.chicagodefender.com

The staff is warm just like the atmosphere, and there is ample parking. The Originalist: Where Great Minds Don’t Think Alike By Brenda and Rick McCain Let’s Play To go into law, one must possess four traits to succeed: passion, commitment, desire, and risk. These traits will carry you through the door, and it just might keep you there all the way to the Supreme Court, as it did with Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Brenda and Rick Known as the McCain “Originalist,” Scalia believed the constitution had to be interpreted by what it theoretically meant to those who ratified it, instead of it being a “living document.” Court Theatre brings us “The Originalist,” a masterpiece that is interesting, thought-provoking and an exhilarating debate written by John Strand. It is about listening to and engaging in civil discourse with those who have opposing viewpoints as well as the passion one must have for the law and the risks one must take to defend their version of the truth. “The Originalist” is centered on a man people love to hate, the exceptional and very opposing law giant Justice Antonin Scalia (Edward Gero). In the play, Scalia becomes the unexpected mentor to a very headstrong Harvard Law School graduate by the name of Cat (Jade Wheeler), who sought to be his law clerk. Scalia is fascinated by Cat’s combative personality and decides to bring her in for an interview, and that’s when the electrifying discord between the two begins. The heated debate gets intense, personal and sometimes even crosses the line; however, Scalia relishes their passionate battles and hires Cat even though they have opposing views. Cat gets concerned that her personal life may become somewhat of an issue, but Scalia assures her that her personal affairs should be just that, personal, and that comprehensive studies were completed on all candidates. The camaraderie between the Justice lawmaker and the future clerk is brilliantly played out on stage as their relationship faces the crucial test, encountering one of the most dividing cases to reach the nation’s highest court. It’s a compelling
struggle of an originalist who interprets the Constitution’s meaning from the time of enactment versus a liberal pragmatist who believes that the Constitution was written to be altered as life changes. Although Justice Scalia represented the extreme with a hefty punch, he was known to welcome debates from his clerks. The pairing of Scalia and Cat-- two individuals opposite in views-- evoked a superb political gamut of truths, which brings about the making of some tremendous theoretical and theatrical debates. Edward Gero masterfully coveted Justice Scalia with so much vigor and character that he surely needs to be awarded
for his stellar performance. Gero was invited to meet with several of the actors and members of the original production crew to help outline his character, which prepared him for the role. Jade Wheeler should be praised for holding her own sparring against the law giant. She was incredible with her tenacity—and definitely got her point across. Together, Gero and Wheeler are spectacular! The cast includes: Edward Gero (Justice Antonin Scalia) Jade Wheeler (Cat) Brett Mack (Brad).
