Chicago Delegation Members Write Letter Opposing Freedom of Speech Restrictions by the Chicago Bears and NFL U.S. Representatives Robin Kelly, Bobby Rush, Danny Davis and Jan Schakowsky recently sent a letter to Chicago Bears’ owner, Virginia Halas McCaskey, and chairman, George McCaskey, expressing opposition to the NFL’s new anthem policy. The controversial new policy mandates that all players and personnel who are on the field for the national anthem stand or be subject to penalty. In the letter, the Members state the policy is a clear violation of the First Amendment Right to free speech. They write: “It is disappointing that your franchise voted to silence the players you employ, during this important national dialogue.” In the letter, the Members highlight the Chicago Bears’ long history of working toward greater inclusion in the League, including working to lift the ban of African American players. They state: “The Halas-McCaskey family has a storied role in the history of this game, and in American culture. George Halas was one of the first league officials to work to convince NFL coaches to lift the ban on black players in 1939, in his attempt to sign Kenny Washington of UCLA. That was a progressive business stand, and 80 years later, you too have the ability to take a similar progressive business stand.” The NFL is one of many private enterprises that has substantially benefitted from federal, state and local investments, including stadium and infrastructure construction. Because of the massive investment of public dollars into this private business, the Members note that the League and its teams should be held to the highest possible standard when it comes to protecting the Constitutional rights of players, fans and employees. Specifically, they write: “Over the last six decades, the NFL and individual teams have been the beneficiaries of millions in federal taxpayer dollars, in addition to state and local taxpayer dollars for stadium construction and infrastructure. Given the investment of taxpayer dollars, the NFL and its team should be held to the highest possible public standard, especially when it comes to protecting and defending the First Amendment rights on players, employees, and fans.” In particular, the Members express a real interest in the double standard created by this new policy. They note, “the NFL’s Personal Conduct policy assigns no fine to teams of players who engage in domestic violence, crimes involving firearms, driving under the influence (DUI), illegal drug usage and other crimes.” THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

MJ Impersonator: Chicago Man Performs as King of Pop By Katara Patton Defender Senior Editor The late great pop icon Michael Jackson no doubt had a major influence on our musical history. And at least one Chicagoan is dedicated to making sure the King of Pop’s legacy is kept alive. “They’ve been keeping Elvis alive for 50 years; we need to keep [Michael Jackson] alive too,” said Rico Hampton, 50. Hampton has traveled throughout the world showcasing many of Jackson’s hits. He said he prefers to lip sync to make the perforTHE CHICAGO DEFENDER
mance more about Jackson. Using his music “gives me spirit and love and his memory,” Hampton told the Defender. “Sometimes singing [himself] can miss the mark…It’s all about Michael.” Hampton will perform “Under the Picasso” sculpture at Daley Plaza on Monday, June 25, at noon- 1 p.m. At the performance at Daley Plaza, Hampton will perform several of Jackson’s hits, as he normally does. He said everyone always wants to hear “Billy Jean,” “Thriller,” “Beat It,” and “The Way You Make Me Feel.” Of course, Jackson has such a large catalog
of hits, it is not possible to cover most of them. Hampton thinks this performance during Black Music Month will be very special; June 25 is the 9th anniversary of Jackson’s death and this year marks his 60th birthday (on August 29). “Every song that comes on brings back memories,” Hampton said. Hampton, who said Jackson’s talent had the biggest influence on his life, has been impersonating Michael Jackson since the 80s when Hampton was 15. Chicago Connection African American music has a steep and deeply rooted history. In many cases the cities that are most mentioned when it comes to African American music are Detroit (Motown) and Philadelphia (The Philadelphia Sound) and of course Los Angeles; however, Chicago has and continues to be a musical Mecca for African American musicians. Musical legends such as Gene Chandler, Curtis Mayfield, Lou Rawls, Minnie Ripperton, Donny Hathaway, Herbie Hancock, Ramsey Lewis and Chaka Khan were all born and raised in Chicago. Chicago was the home of the famous Chess records, located at 4858 S. Cottage Grove from 19511954. Though the label was start-
ed by Polish immigrants and brothers Leonard and Phil Chess, it was the African American musicians who came to Chicago to live and record music that made the label the historical institution it is today. Many musicians made their way from the South to the Southside of Chicago to record on the Chess label. Music legends such as Buddy Guy, Little Richard and Etta James all recorded on the Chess label. Chicago also has a rich gospel music legacy, with the Bronzeville neighborhood being credited as the birthplace of gospel music. More specifically Pilgrim Baptist Church on 33rd and Indiana was credited as the place where gospel began. This was due mostly to the influence of gospel great Thomas Dorsey. Dorsey’s unique style of combining blues piano and R&B www.chicagodefender.com
rhythms, contributes to making gospel music what it is today. The Reverend James Cleveland, known as the King of Gospel, and gospel great Albertina Walker were both born in the city. Gospel music legend Mahalia Jackson also made her home in Chicago. Additionally, Chicago is also noted as the birthplace of several legendary groups such as The Five Stairsteps, The Emotions, The Chi-Lites, The Impressions and the Staples Singers, who are all Chicago natives. And even though their members were not born in Chicago, Chicago was the birthplace of Earth, Wind and Fire. Chicago’s musical legacy and contributions to music continues with artists such as Da Brat, Common, Jennifer Hudson, Twista, Vic
Mensa and Chance the Rapper all hailing from Chicago You can hear the Blues played nightly at Buddy Guy’s Legends. Chicago also has many Jazz and other live music venues and festivals that keep the musical legacy and history pulsating throughout the city. Celebrations during this historic month can be found throughout Chicagoland as music is a part of every outdoor festival—from last week’s Gospel Fest and Hyde Park’s Brew Fest to the Blues Festival (June 8-10). Take some time to raise your voice and celebrate the beauty of the music created by the sons and daughters of African Americans. And stay tuned throughout this month (and always) for more features on those sharing their gifts and talents around the Chicagoland area. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
POLITICS
Lori Lightfoot Looks to Tackle Obstacles To Become Mayor By Charles Preston Defender Contributing Writer Obstacles are nothing new to Lori Lightfoot. For years, Lightfoot has sat in front of police reformers, police abolitionists, and families impacted by police shootings during her tenure as Chicago Police Board President. The families of Rekia Boyd, Quintonio Legrier, and Ronald Johnson passionately demanded justice for their loved ones to Lightfoot and her colleagues, yet their calls have remained unanswered. In an era where Black Lives Matter protests are common and extrajudicial killings of Black people are hypervisible, Lightfoot aims to build positive inroads in Chicago’s Black communities while campaigning against the man who appointed her to head his taskforce on accountability. Lightfoot has a tall task–defeating a twotime Barack Obama endorsed incumbent and gaining the trust of the people who called on her for justice and accountability. But again, obstacles are nothing new to Lori Lightfoot. “I hope people look at my background and will recognize that when I talk about families that are struggling, I’m talking from the basis of personal experience,” says Lightfoot. “I’m the fourth of four kids. I’ve been in Chicago for almost 32 years, but I grew up in Ohio during the 60s and 70s in a small steel-town that was very segregated.” That town is Massillon, Ohio. Massillon is a blue-collar town 50 miles south of Cleveland with a population of about 33,000. Lightfoot’s success is as rare as a mayor winning an election after setting the record for most closed public schools during their tenure in United States history. Not only is her hometown “overwhelmingly White,” but the most notable people are sports figures. Think the traditional Midwestern football towns that revolve around hard labor and Friday night lights (Lightfoot even played quarterback for her intramural league at the University of Chicago Law School). Like many Black Chicago families, Lightfoot comes from a home rooted in hard work but burdened by race. “My mother was a housekeeper and she worked a midnight-shift at the mental institution...and then later at the nursing home. She would be classified as a low-wage worker,” recounts Lightfoot. “My father, who lost his hearing through illness, worked really hard to be the man of the house and provide for his family. Given the limitations of race, education, and ability, it was very hard for him. My dad had THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
Lori Lightfoot wants to be the next mayor of Chicago. a full-time job but was often compelled to work two or three jobs.” Lightfoot inherited this determination to succeed. Her resume boasts the following: a BA in Political Science from the University of Michigan, a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School, worked for Mayer Brown International LLP (a global law firm founded in Chicago and the 15th largest law firm in the United States) and made partner, Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Northern District of Illinois, outside counsel for Bank of America, Chicago Police Board President, and her most recent position as chair of The Task Force on Police Accountability. Lightfoot is a candidate with a wealth of experience in policing and criminal law. However, the issues impacting Chicago’s Black communities are varied and copious. One pressing concern is Chicago’s inability to protect its Black populations from the rapid displacement occurring this decade. “It’s really an issue that animates people all over the city, particularly low to middle-income neighborhoods that are on the rise,” says Lightfoot. “I think we have to get serious about providing sufficient affordable housing units in neighborhoods, instead of relegating them to areas that are inconvenient and less desirable across the city.” Lightfoot acknowledges that she may not be the most informed on a host of issues outside of her expertise. A mayor needs advisors. Lightfoot looks to bring those who have been studying issues like gentrification, economic development, and housing in conversation with her administration if elected. “We have to really look long and hard about how we can be en-
Lightfoot with wife, Amy Eshleman, and their daughter Vivian, at a news conference announcing her run for Mayor. gaged with the community on the front-end and to talk about these issues,” she said. “There are a lot of people in Chicago who are subject matter experts. We need to bring those people to the table, those who represent folks who are most affected by policies, and have a smart way in which we address these issues and not ignore them.” In Chicago, low voter turnout usually means a victory for the incumbent. Such was the case with the last mayoral election–that ended in a runoff– when approximately only 33 percent of Chicago voters made a trip to the ballot box. Challengers to Rahm Emanuel will also be fighting against voter apathy, especially in Black and Brown communities, who felt the worst of politicians’ bad political choices. The distrust between Black citizens and politicians exists. However, Lightfoot believes this relationship can be repaired. “We’ve seen for many years, at the national level and locally, www.chicagodefender.com
people feeling completely disaffected from all institutions of government,” she says. “They feel like the government isn’t relevant to them. They feel it constantly takes, and in some instances, actually causes them harm. I think it’s critically important that we have to rebuild that basic relationship between citizens, elected officials, and institutions of government. It is critical to the survival of our democracy. It’s a very a big issue. We have to completely abandon this ‘us vs. them’ mentality; it’s an awful way of governance and it distances people from institutions of government in our democracy. It makes people feel like elected officials are solely politicians looking out for their own self-interests, without any regard for what is in the best interest of their own constituents.” But is Black Chicago ready for Lori Lightfoot? If anything, Black Chicagoans should research her record, be cognizant of the families who gave
their testimonies to Lightfoot at police board hearings, weigh her rhetoric and talking points against other candidates, and also question our own biases and attitudes about identity. It’s no secret, that if elected, Lori Lightfoot will be the first lesbian mayor, the first Black woman mayor, the first interracially wedded mayor, and the first Ohio-born mayor. Of course, these things matter when considering that Chicago’s mayors mostly have had a very routine and traditional image– heteronormative nuclear family, White, and male (with the exception of Harold Washington and Jane Byrne.) Lori Lightfoot speaks progressive politics and her identity will probably be considered by voters—although not much talk around it has been mentioned. Nevertheless, Lightfoot looks poised to handle what looks to be a grueling race for the top seat in Chicago. After all, obstacles are nothing new to Lori Lightfoot. June 6 - 12, 2018 5

Controversy Surrounds Defense of Chicago Police Officer Robert Rialmo
Advocates of Blue Lives Matter protest against COPA. By Charles Preston Defender Contributing Writer Will there be justice for Quintonio LeGrier and Bettie Jones? Maybe not, but there is a ton of support for officer Robert Rialmo. Officer Robert Rialmo, who fatally shot both, was deposed in the wrongful death lawsuit brought against him and the city by the estates of Quintonio LeGrier and Bettie Jones at the Daley Center last Tuesday. The meeting was closed to the public. Last December, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) ruled that Rialmo was “not justified” in shooting Jones and LeGrier. In January, his termination was recommended. However, three months later, Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson rejected COPA’s recommendation, saying “Officer Rialmo’s actions were justified and within department policy.” Rialmo has received a great deal of support. Just two weeks ago, on May 23, members of the Fraternal Order of Police and CPD protested against COPA and police accountability. During the public comment section of the City Council meeting, three FOP leaders blasted Kim Foxx, Rahm Emanuel, and COPA. While this was happening, dozens of the angry Blue Lives Matter demonstrators protested outside and even agitated #NoCopAcademy activists on the inside. Chants of “NOPA, COPA!” and “Rahm must back the blue!” rang throughout the building’s chambers. 6 June 6 - 12, 2018
Bettie Jones and Quintonio LeGrier. Two aldermen have also donated to the legal defense fund of Rialmo. Alderman Anthony Napolitano (41st) and Aldernman Nick Sposato (38th) have both donated $100 to a Gofundme campaign for officer Robert Rialmo. According to a report from the Chicago Sun-Times, when Ald. Napolitano was asked if his donation would upset members of city council, he said: “I can give a rat’s ass.” “I don’t think that it is appropriate. However, everyone is free to do what they want to do. It’s not something I would participate in,” says Alderman Jason Ervin (28th) after asked if Napolitano’s and Sposato’s contributions were ethical. Rialmo fatally shot LeGrier and Jones in Alderman Ervin’s ward on December 26, 2015. “I think that it was very clear that the actions the officer took were not in bounds with the police department’s general orders and procedures,” Ervin says. “Furthermore, since his arrest on the mis-
demeanor battery charges, I just think that is the type of individual that need not be serving in the city of Chicago.” Alderman Napolitano’s and Alderman Sposato’s donations come shortly after Officer Rialmo incurred misdemeanor theft and battery charges stemming from an off-duty December incident, where he punched two men in the face at Moretti’s Ristorante and Pizzeria. COPA released video footage of the incident under a new policy initiated after the 2014 shooting of Laquan McDonald. Joel A. Brodsky, Rialmo’s defense attorney, started Rialmo’s Gofundme. The page reads: “Unfortunately for Officer Rialmo, the shooting he was involved with was the first officer-involved shooting after the release of the Laquan McDonald video. The Mayor and the City were set on throwing Officer Rialmo under the bus in order to have the appearance that they were ‘holding officers accountable and they were www.chicagodefender.com

Currently, Brodsky has raised over $16,000 of the campaign’s $50,000 goal. On Brodsky’s Twitter page, he retweets footage of Rialmo’s restaurant incident––where his client appears to be throwing punches––and captions it: “One hell of a right cross.” Brodsky is also responsible for officer Rialmo’s $10 million countersuit against LeGrier’s estate, alleging that Quintonio LeGrier was responsible for his own death by taking a swing at Rialmo with a baseball bat and causing Rialmo trauma. This is not to be confused with the city’s lawsuit against LeG-
rier’s estate that was dropped by Mayor Rahm Emanuel this past December. The Gofundme page has faced a considerable amount of criticism from activists online. An online activist took to the blogging website––Medium––to amplify the #DontFundHim campaign that called for the removal of Rialmo’s page. In the Medium post, a letter addressed to Gofundme states that Rialmo’s page is in conflict with the site’s terms of service because, “…users of GoFundMe agree not to use the service to support the legal defense of alleged crimes associated with hate, violence, harassment, bullying, discrimination, terrorism, or intolerance of any kind relating to race.” Rialmo is still collecting his $84,054 salary. Local Artist Commissioned to Create West Pullman Mural By Deborah Bayliss Defender Contributing Writer The scenic journey across the Major Taylor Trail will soon include a colorful and informative mural featuring a historic, African-American cyclist. Visual artist and sculptor Bernard Williams was commissioned by Architreasures, a community arts organization, to design and paint the mural on the trail named for Marshall (Major) Taylor, a celebrated bicycle racer of the late nineteenth century. A West Pullman native, Williams was selected as the winner of a competition held by Architreasures and other sponsors. The mural will be painted on the wall that spans the length of the Calumet River Bridge, which is more than 400 feet long. “The mural project celebrates the life of Major Taylor who was a Black cyclist in the 1900s,” Williams said last week. “Taylor set several world records and won numerous races all over the world. I’ve completed a preliminary design. The mural will feature a large portrait and other images of Major Taylor cycling in a sort of silhouette form as he passes through various words that represent cities and countries [in which] he has performed and won championships.” One of the city’s few urban trails, Major Taylor connects several neighborhoods on the city’s southwest side. The trail starts and ends in areas managed by the Forest Preserves of Cook County, and includes the Dan Ryan Woods on the north and Whistler Woods on the south. The northernmost section of the trail—from Dan Ryan Woods to 87th Street—is on an elevated portion of a former train line. Its only street crossing (at 83rd Street) is an overpass with the street below, according to information on the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy website. Manwah Lee, Architreasure’s executive director, said Williams was chosen the winner because, “He truly understood our interest in capturing the significance of the person the trail is named after and getting community feedback for the project. He’s also worked on other mural projects. He’s an accomplished artist who does multiple art forms including sculpture. I didn’t realize until later on that he is a West Pullman native.” Williams holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and a Master of Fine Arts degree THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

He also studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. Williams has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago since 1991. “I plan to start working on the mural June 11 and will try to finish in four to six weeks,” Williams said. “I want it to be inspiring for the community and celebrate the life of a person people don’t know. He had a unique personality for
his time and was the first African-American to win a championship.” Williams will be the lead artist on the mural project and will hire two or three local artists for the project. “I’m currently talking to students from the Art Institute. I will get kids from the south side.” As for the thought process on some of his work, Williams writes in his artist statement on the Chicago Public Art Group’s website www.chicagodefender.com
that his recent works display fragments and personal discoveries that are presented with familiar material and that his interpretations are impulsive and intuitive. “Similar ideas are apparent with the outdoor murals,” he continues. “My critique of history and culture is often subtle. History is personally incorporated and relived. The past is never over and always beginning, altering the model of history and creating the past anew. These projects, however, involve
a more open process that allows collaboration with high school students, community members, and other artists.” As for his reaction to reports that City of Chicago workers painted over a mural that paid homage to Puerto Rican culture in the Hermosa neighborhood, Williams said it was extremely disturbing. “The same thing happened to one of my own murals many years ago,” Williams said. “However it was not because of graffiti removal. A local alderman had it painted over for political reasons. It was on a wall at 103rd and Cottage Grove and was a giant portrait of A. Phillip Randolph, George Pullman and the Pullman Porters. We met and talked about it. It was 10 or 15 years ago.” Williams added the city needs to have more protocol when it comes to murals, which are works of art. “They couldn’t have mistaken it (the Hermosa mural) for graffiti because it was on both sides of the street and was obviously purposefully done,” Williams said. “They need to have a protocol that when a mural needs repair work done on it, to contact the artist.” An unveiling ceremony for the Major Taylor Trail Mural will include a 5K Walk/Run/Cycle event and is scheduled to take place July 21 at Whistler Woods, 735 W. 134th St. and Riverdale. Chicago West Community Music Center Offers an Alternative to Trouble for Youth By Clarence Waldron Defender Guest Writer Howard Sandifer believes in the power of music. And that is what he has been teaching at the Chicago West Community Music Center, a non-profit organization, for nearly 20 years. Sandifer says, “People come here to play music, to learn music and to listen to music. Music heals.” He and his wife Darlene started the Center at their kitchen table in 1999. It has since grown to about 20,000 students and 16,000 patrons. They noticed that the schools were taking music out of the curriculum. Sandifer recalls that Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness.” He adds, “They took music out, we brought it back. We give students an alternative to the crime in the area. Kids get into trouble between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m., according to studies. We are serving the Austin, North Lawndale and East and West Garfield Park communities.” The Center introduces students from the age of four through high school to all musical styles, from jazz to classical to hip hop, pop and R&B. They learn songwriting, producing, arranging, recording and publishing. A North Lawndale native, Sandifer is a graduate of Farragut High School and holds a bachelor’s degree from Roosevelt University in music education with a minor in piano. Sandifer has had a diverse career in music. He was a staff writer for Curtis Mayfield’s label, Curtom, and wrote the hit tune, “It Only Hurts For A Little While” for the Notations. He also composed the theme for Johnson Publishing Company’s celebrity talk show, “The Ebony/Jet Showcase.” The students at Chicago West Community Music Center students have become international travelers. The evening will be hosted by Oak Park radio personality Doris Davenport. Brown says the Center has been a safe haven “for me to express myself. My time has been nothing but good. They taught me a lot about musicianship and allowed me to be me.” He adds that the opportunity to travel to Paris
inspired him to love music even more. “It was deeper than me, being able to learn about their culture was great. We are learning that the world is bigger than our backyards. You have to see it and experience it. “Although we have a lot of violence around us, there’s a lot of love. And that love can be expressed in music, the way that it moves people and brings people together.” La Niece Dennis, a 17-yearold senior at Providence St. Mel, shares the impact Chicago West has on her. “I was shy and timid when I got in the program. Sandifer cites an example of the role the Center plays in the community. “One of our students called one day to say he could not come in because his younger sister who was in fourth grade got shot in school. He later said that his sister had been killed. The young man said he would come in the next day. We told him, ‘No, take care of yourself and your family.’ He said, ‘I must come in because I have to express myself through music.’ And he did express himself through writing and rap. It had a very calming and healing effect on our students.” He continues, “We teach our students to develop solutions, not just tell the story. How can we solve these problems?” Chicago West Community Music Center is an affiliate of After School Matters, which provides a stipend to the students. The Center is a collaborator with the Berklee College’s City Music Network, which is committed to delivering high-quality contemporary music instruction to youth from underserved communities. Victory Gardens Theater concludes 43rd Season with Mies Julie By Yaël Farber Directed by Dexter Bullard Adapted from August Strindberg’s 1888 classic Miss Julie May 25 – June 24, 2018 bert) encounters his White Afrikaans master’s daughter Julie (Heather Chrisler), who has just been dumped by her fiancé, in a sweltering kitchen on a hot, feverish night where his mother Christine (Celeste Williams) had just finished cleaning the floors. Miss Julie is attracted to John because he is well-mannered and well-read. John and Julie both share an undeniable heated attraction for one another. And on this particular night while everyone is out celebrating “Freedom Day,” the relationship between Miss Julie and John intensifies quickly to feelings www.chicagodefender.com
of love and is subsequently consummated. However, over the course of the play which eventually spirals aggressively out of control, Miss Julie and John battle until Julie convinces him that the only way to escape her predicament is to commit suicide. Well-known Chicago director Dexter Bullard, who directed “Circle Mirror Transformation” at Victory Gardens Theater, brings Yaël Farber’s layers of complexities in “Mies Julie” to life with intense scenes of heated passion, in a naturalistic style that is relentless with duality, fiery language, and stark dialogue. Together, with some changes from the original work, they help the audience relive The Bantu Land Act, No. 23 of 1933, when non-White Africans were prohibited from buying land and sacred land was taken from those not considered Afrikaaners. “Mies Julie” also dives into an-
other law, The Immorality Act No.5 of 1927 that prohibited sexual intercourse between White and non-Whites. The penalty was imprisonment, however, for most Africans, it lead to their death. It was not until 1985, 58 years later, that this law was reversed by the Immorality and Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act, and in 1994 the election of Nelson Mandela. Farber, a Helen Hayes Award winner for Outstanding Director of a Play, brings a new political element to the classic, fleshing out more fully the contemporary issues of human rights, race, power, and gender power through the lens of post-apartheid South Africa. We highly recommend “Mies Julie” at Victory Garden Theater. He looked into the air, while my bobby-sock like a sandy beach, his long limbs clad ankle peeked out from the top of a freshly-tied gym shoe.
“Look, Look!” Before Daddy could respond, I brought my foot down, did a James Brown spin and popped my LEFT leg in the air in the same manner. “I can tie my shoe. I can tie my shoe! I tied BOTH of my SHOE!” In my self-absorbed state, I neglected to get my bearings the second time. This caused me to wobble violently after my second leg came down. There I was in the middle of our living room floor, my flailed arms and legs reminiscent of the letter X as I teetered on the edge of a major crash. But there was Daddy, right there, outstretched arm ready to catch me if I fell. I didn’t fall. Daddy wasn’t having that. “Let’s play a game,” Daddy said, once he made sure I could still stand upright. I gladly obliged and anxiously awaited to hear what he had in mind. Daddy always played the best games. “We’re going to look for that missing letter ‘S’ that seems to have fallen off the end of your sentence, every time you show me your feet.” “Huhhhh? I don’t understand.” You need to say you know how to tie your SHOES, not shoe. Shoes means two or both. Do you understand now?” “Yes Daddy.” “Ok, so let’s hurry up and find
that letter ‘S’ so you won’t trip and fall over it!” I burst into another fit of giggles. “Oh Daddy, You’re so SILLY! I’m not going on any TRIPS! I got BOTH of my feet tied up in my SHOES, remember?” With that declaration, I ran off, leaving Daddy standing there with a look of bemused defeat, as he realized his linguistic lesson had NOT landed in quite the way intended. That was the thing about my Daddy. He was always there to offer gentle support and guidance, as I moved from toddler to a teen, between the ages of Barbie dolls and boys. He and my mother locked arms in foreboding the former in our house, because in the 1970’s there were no Black Barbies. Daddy banned the boys himself. In her article, 25 things about being a “Daddy’s Girl,” Cossette Jarrett identifies a myriad of ways that being a Daddy’s girl is special. I picked my favorite ten things about being a Daddy’s Girl for this column: #1 YOU CAN DO NO WRONG #2 YOU’RE NEVER WITHOUT A BESTIE #3 YOU’VE GOT AN HONEST OPINION—He many not always tell you what you want to hear, but what you hear is what you need to be told #4 YOU HAVE A COOL NICK-

Brothers Gotta Work it Out By Carl D. West 12 Voices I’m so damn torn between what’s real and what’s been disturbing the Black race for centuries. This racism thing continues to alarm many people who see America as this evil emCarl D. West pire, and Negroes are in the belly of the beast. It’s almost daily that news alerts flash across the television screen or in my news feed where White cops or groups of rogue officers have beat down young Black THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
men and women whose only issue is being Black. I’m dumbfounded each time I see these horrific encounters between the common man and law enforcement. I feel even more disturbed knowing that this bull is running rampant and innocent people are being subjected to bigotry and ignorance. It makes me ask: “What are brothers to do?” How do we fight this senseless behavior by uneducated and mentally ill police officers? These fools have no concern for the law themselves because they know they’re being filmed but they still exercise stupidity each time they pull some elderly lady from a car or choke a teen on his prom night or strip a sister naked who was only attempting to secure a place in a grocery line. Not to mention the now global encounter of those two brothers being arrested in Starbucks. How are we as Black people to deal with these unfortunate and
seemingly regular occurrences of injustice and prejudice? Should we take measures into our own hands? Nope! Not enough courageous men to do that. Should we surrender to our knees and beg for mercy? Heck NO! I was attending one of my favorite events a few weekends ago presented by Jermaine Lawrence. It did my heart good to see so many brothers gathered at the Hyatt Hotel at 8:30 am, as the I Am Gentlemen Foundation, founded by Jermaine, invited dozens of respectful brothers to show up and show out in support of over 200 teens. I Am Gentlemen distributed slightly used and new suits, shoes, socks, ties, belts and other items to help prepare the teens for their upcoming proms and other activities where being a “gentleman” is a must! Then later that week I was able to host brothers (30 plus) as we toured multiple CPS grade and www.chicagodefender.com
high schools in pursuit of mentoring students. This program, the Black Male Tour: Day of Service, in its second year, created by Jeff Dase, chief of CPS’ Network 12, brought brothers together from all walks of life in and around Chicago to ride out on assigned passenger buses to gather with students and share information on being men. I believe brothers are gonna work it out. It doesn’t matter how many bigoted encounters we face throughout our journeys. It doesn’t matter how many Black boys and men that law enforcement tries to put in its horrible prison systems. And it doesn’t matter how many times they beat down innocent brothers: They can’t beat us all down! They can’t lock ALL of us up. And their racist behavior can’t stop us from shining and building monuments to our ancestors who endured so much more. Because our progress is their progress! Regardless of what evil Amer-
ica does to stop the progressive movement of Black and Brown people, we’ll continue to advance collectively, separately as well as individually, while focusing on creating safe and viable communities to raise our children. Brothers from around the globe will work it out and there is nothing they can do to stop us! Our biggest fight is and has always been with each other. Today, we pledge to break the cycle of confusion and rely heavily on our abilities to think logically and turn our attention to changing the world where we live, work and play! Because no brother is mentally free until every brother is mentally free! And we’re gonna work that out! Carl D. Bring on Bamba? Bulls Host Pre-Draft Workout for Mo Bamba Sports by #TheBIGS “Chicago’s a great city, they have a young team and I can see myself playing here,” Mo Bamba explained as he took questions from a pool of local reporters after his pre-draft workout at the Advocate Center in front of the Bulls brass looking to snag a game-changing player with the #7 pick in this month’s NBA Draft. Most experts laugh at the thought of Mo still being available at #7 but the 6’7 ex-Texas Longhorn explained that he still sees the Bulls as a potential landing spot. “Obviously the goal is to be the number one pick, but I think Chicago has all the assets and everything there for me to succeed and play here.” Highly touted for his freakish athleticism and his ability to shoot from long range at his size, Mo says those areas were a focal point of his Bulls pre-draft workout. “We shot a lot of threes,” Bamba told the crowd. “I shot okay from the three. Couple of pick and pop things, some plays out of the pick and roll and some of the coaches had a lot of fun throwing me lobs,” Bamba finished while laughing. We’ll see where Mo Bamba Mo Bamba gets some shots up at his pre-draft workout for the Bulls (John L. Alexander/The Bigs Visuals) lands on draft night, June 21.
CJ’s Day Off Cubs Reliever Goes 1on1 with #TheBIGS on his off day Sports by #TheBIGS CHICAGO -- If you’re Carl Edwards Jr, what better way to spend part of your off day than living a day in the life of me... getting buckets! Lakeshore Sport & Fitness’ downtown location was the setting as #TheBIGS met up with CJ for a few games on the hardwood. We’ve seen pictures and dealt with him bragging about how good he was in his high school days, but this was his chance to witness THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
why they call us “Bless Buckets!” We made sure that every time we made a shot, we pointed right at him to let him know whose crib he was in. “I don’t have my basketball legs...it’s gonna take me a couple of runs up and down to get going bruh,” was the excuse CJ tried to feed me, but we let him live. It took him a minute to get going; but after a game or two, he found his shot and actually led us in scoring in one of our two wins, and then we got back to what he was familiar with...baseball. The Cubs message to fans after an up and down start to the season was just to “ride It out.” Riding it out is something Cubs fans are familiar with. After 108 years of heartache and pain, the Commissioner’s Trophy was finally back on
the North Side in 2016. As a rookie, CJ took it all in but knew the focus coming back would be different. “It’s like a video game. Knowing that we just won the World Series, you win and then you gotta start all the way over. So that’s how I came into this season. I pretty much left everything that happened that year in 2016. It’s a new year and we’re trying to do the same thing.” With a chance to win yet another NL Central “ship,” the pitching is going to have to be A1 down the stretch. CJ’s role as the high pressure/damage control situation reliever is crucial. “I think it brings more out of me--it makes it more exciting when I come in whether it’s a 1 run lead or down by 1. Runners on base with no outs or runners on base with 2 outs. It’s pressure, but it’s fun pressure.” www.chicagodefender.com
Sky center Astou Ndour defends Sun forward Joquel Jones in the paint during Friday’s 110-72 loss to Connecticut (Quinn Harris/ The Bigs Visuals)
The Sky Split With Sun and Aces at Wintrust Sports by #TheBIGS Friday night the Sky welcomed the unbeaten Connecticut Sun to Wintrust Arena and a celebration of the LGBT Community on their “Pride Night.” After putting up an early fight, things got out of hand quickly as the Sun put a strangle hold on the game and cruised to a 110-72 victory over the Sky. In the postgame press conference, head coach Amber Stocks said her message to the team is “to focus on the numbers and what we did good. Yeah, it’s tough to lose a game by this many points but at
this stage of our progression, you take the good with the bad.” Jonquel Jones and Alex Bentley scored 20 points apiece to help the Connecticut Sun beat the Chicago Sky. Chiney Ogwumike added 17 points, Courtney Williams scored 15 and Alyssa Thomas had 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Sun. Rookie Diamond DeShields led Chicago with 15 points. The Sky rebounded with a big 95-90 win over the Las Vegas Aces Sunday afternoon for their 3rd win of the season. They now sit at 3-6 on the young season. June 6 - 12, 2018 19
