CITY NEWS Coco-Cola Offers $30,000 Challenge To Strengthen Chicago The Great Lakes Coca-Cola Bottling Company recently introduced “Dear Future Chicago,” an ambitious challenge to young adults to come up with new, innovative ideas to improve workforce development in the greater Chicago area. Dear Future Chicago is a part of the national “Dear Future Challenge,” an initiative by The Coca-Cola Company to encourage people to join in locally based efforts to renew and strengthen communities across America. To participate in the Dear Future Chicago challenge, young adults ages 18 to 24 can submit their ideas on how to pro-

vide local residents with the tools to land jobs online or live on campuses around the country this fall. After the program closes in mid-October, all of the submissions will be evaluated and an award of $30,000 will be made to one change making idea. The change maker behind the winning ideas will be paired with local partners – Coca-Cola Scholars, local NGOs – who will mentor them and help them turn their vision into reality. Youth Sponsors Free Wash Day Nearly 300 people were able to wash their clothes for free, thanks to Jayera Griffin, who recently graduated 8th grade from Washington Junior High School in Riverdale. The participants stopped by for the free wash day at Mama’s Coin Laundry, which was coordinated by Griffin, in partnership with Clorox. Doors were open for free washes from 6:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Griffin, who was also valedictorian

of her class, decided to save her own money to help residents wash clothes after she noticed some of the students she tutored had uniforms that were not as clean as they could be. Her first free wash day was in April, and it was such a success that Griffin decided to sponsor another one. Community members were dancing and catching up, as they enjoyed music from a DJ outside, and were smiling as they left with loads of clean clothes.

A new Illinois commission launched by State Senator Emil Jones III (D-Chicago) will work to ensure diverse populations in Chicago and around Illinois are properly counted in the 2020 United States Census. Jones’ legislation was passed in Emil Jones III response to a U.S. Census Bureau report that said the 2010 census undercounted minorities in the United States by nearly 1.5 million with African-Americans, Hispanics, renters and young men not properly counted. “It’s a shame that some of our most vulnerable citizens—people of color and low-income residents—are continuously being underrepresented,” Jones said. “This only leads to fewer federal dollars being spent in these areas and less representation in Washington. This commission will help prevent this problem from happening again.” The Illinois Complete Count Commission will develop, recommend and help administer a census outreach strategy to encourage full participation in the census. “It’s important that we get ahead of the issue this time around, and use this commission to make sure all communities in Chicago and other areas of Illinois are equally accounted for in the 2020 Census,” Jones said. With the passage of Jones’ legislation, the work of the Illinois Complete Count Commission is already underway in preparation for the 2020 census. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Why Fathers Matter As we look to celebrating the men in our lives on Sunday, June 17, there’s no doubt the role of the father has a complicated history in the African American culture. While acknowledging these complications, we look to offer hope, support and encouragement to men who are seeking ways to show up in the lives of their children--whether they are toddlers or adults. And we are ever grateful for those who have become “father figures” and cared for the village. Truly, we all benefit from healthy relationships with male figures. We hope the features in this week’s edition of the Chicago Defender will provide inspiration and help to fathers, and show fathers how much they matter to their children and to our community.

As Father’s Day (June 17) rolls around, we are reminded that today’ fathers must navigate a new world and avoid gender specific roles. “The fathers of today’s girls need to be engaged, creative and flexible,” says Sheri D. Engler, author of The Pearls of Wisdom: A Fairy Tale Guide to Life’s Magic Secrets for All Ages (www.thepearlsofwisdombook.com. All proceeds go to the Angel Whispers Foundation, which was organized to empower young females.) She says today’s dads should encourage girls at every opportunity. “Women are breaking down many barriers, but there is still a lot of work to be done,” Engler says. “Today’s fathers play a critical role in their daughter’s self-image and can be instrumental in encouraging them to challenge the status quo.” Engler offers the following tips for fathers who want to raise their daughters to be strong, independent women: •Treat women with respect. See yourself as a role model of the kind of man you would want your daughter to marry one day, because that frequently influences how women choose their partners. •Give her compliments about things other than her beauty. It is OK to tell your daughter she’s pretty, but that should not be the only compliment you give her. Compliment her intelligence, her resourcefulness, her imagination, her many skills, her hard work, and her strength. Honestly, tell her the unique things you love about her, the things that make her a good and special person. •Teach her the magic of self-confidence. Teach her about the power that comes from believ-

ing in herself and believing she can achieve greatness in the world, while understanding that there are many girls who simply want to be a “mommy” like their mother, which is the most important job in the world. In this case, they may fear failing their father’s expectations of greatness. There is a critical difference between encouragement to be who they are and pressure to be who they aren’t. •Teach her about what has traditionally been “guy stuff.” Teach her self-reliance, such as routine car maintenance, or mechanics in general. Teach her how to use tools while building a treehouse. Go fishing together. Take her to see planes at air shows, teach her photography and go birdwatching with her. It matters to spend quality time with her, because it makes her feel she is worth her dad’s time. And it doesn’t have to stop in childhood. www.chicagodefender.com

What could you be teaching your adult daughter? •Let her get gritty like the boys. Teach her how to play sports from early on. This fosters tremendous social confidence as well as body confidence. Or just let her play in the mud and get dirty if that is what she wants to do. Girls don’t always have to be clean and pretty. •Introduce her to books with girl heroes. There are plenty of books to choose from, so when reading to her let her enjoy a variety of adventures including books with strong female leaders like The Pearls of Wisdom, Little Leaders, Bold Women in Black History or other books that were written to empower girls. This will send the message that you believe in her. Or perhaps help her write a story of her own imagining herself as the hero or lead character. If nothing

else this will give you a valuable view of how she sees herself so you know what’s going on with her. •Share music with her. Play your favorite music and tell her why you like it and let her do the same. Take her to concerts. If she wants to play an instrument, help her learn how. Music, and the arts in general, can be bonding experiences. “The most important change for today’s fathers is that they shouldn’t box girls in or out of anything just because they are a girl,” Engler says. “Fathers who respect the women in their lives have a better chance of raising daughters who feel deserving of respect themselves. Good Fathers Make Great Dads By William J. Booker Defender Guest Writer We often leave it up to the courts to decide on what to do with men who have children they don’t or can’t financially support. But fathers who intentionally dodge their financial obligations to their children may have other problems they suffer from related to inadequacies from their own life experience of growing up in a fatherless household. The lessons young men learn about fatherhood begin at home. However, fatherless young men may never learn what is expected of them when they eventually have a family of their own. These men often detach themselves from the experience of raising children out of fear of reliving past feelings of abandonment and neglect that they themselves may have experienced as 4 June 13 - 19, 2018

a child. It’s challenging in many ways for some men to accept their responsibility of being a father, especially when you’re told growing up that you will never amount to anything, or that you’re just like your dad--which can have a negative connotation. All young boys need their fathers to teach them how to be responsible dads, and how to take care of their family. When a father leaves his home and tells his son, “I’m going to need you to be the man of the house when I’m not here,” it means a lot to a young boy to know that his father has entrusted him to take good care of his family. He grows up knowing he can handle the responsibility of fatherhood. But when a young boy grows up in a fatherless household, he is often denied the experience and reassurance that he can handle the job.

Moreover, if the solution is to lock up every father who falls behind, or fails to pay their child support, many young men will never learn how to be a good dad. It’s children that hurt the most when fathers are absent from their lives. Courts and policymakers must understand and consider all of the challenges children of incarcerated parents face when making decisions that affects the lives of millions of children. Clearly, there is a disconnect that must be addressed, but incarcerating men because they have failed at being good providers to their children is not the solution. Despite the challenges, let’s hope that all men can find the experience of becoming a father a blessing, and learn how to become a good father and provider by spending less time in jail, and more time with their kids.

Papa is more than a rollin’ stone. The lyrics from The Temptations’ poignant musical hit painted a picture of a father who was not a contributing member of his family. While this can be the reality for some, Papas truly do matter in their children’s lives. Fatherhood is a highly important role in child development; one that frequently takes a secondary role to that of motherhood--in popular culture. According to Cooper (2015), the larger public has unfortunately focused on the absence of Black fathers in their families. While some studies have demonstrated social and structural limitations of Black fathers’ involvement, this notion needs to be reframed. Boyd-Franklin (1989) suggests that because of the many misperceptions, Black fathers are the most misunderstood members of African American families by the general public. Some fathers are viewed as absent, while others are viewed as uninvolved. Many Black fathers have been plagued by historical issues rooted in economic marginalization and physical and psychological enslavement. Further, portrayals of Black men in the media often reflect lifestyles that contribute to the perpetuation of negative stereotypes (McAdoo & McAdoo, 1997). To strengthen the role of the Black father, these stereotypical roles need to be challenged. Boyd-Franklin explained that many Black men are often involved in an egalitarian way in child rearing and decision making about children. It would be a serious mistake for the public to assume that because a Black father does not live at home, he is not involved with his children. Research shows that in Black families, many fathers do play an active role which leads to their children having better competence in language and increased cognitive ability (Block, Dubowitz, & Starr, 2003). Black fathers who play with their children have more child-centered households and have fewer behavior problems. In fact, contrary to popular belief, studies have shown that Black fathers have similar involvement with their children as do fathers from other ethnic groups (Cooper, 2015). Studies have also indicated that Black fathers’ involvement leads to positive influences on their children’s social competence, and overall psychological well-being. In some families where the father may be absent or unavailable, it is important that others step up to fill the void left behind. Men in the community can help shoulder some of the paternal responsibilities. Children benefit from the modeling of a father or father figure to help them feel connected and learn lessons that will help strengthen their lives. Black fathers have an opportunity to rewrite the script that has defined them for so many generations. By finding ways to play a meaningful role in their children’s lives, whether by telling their children stories at bedtime, singing with them, praying with them, sharing a hug, praising them for their achievements and comforting them when they stumble, the Black father can further elevate his place in his child’s life. So, yes, dads do matter and in spite of adversities, they can be a rock in the family. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Ja’Mal Green: From Activist to Mayor? By Charles Preston Defender Contributing Writer Two years ago, when Chicagoans were horrified by the graphic video images of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald being shot 16 times by CPD Officer Jason Van Dyke, Ja’Mal Green adorned a “Rahm Failed Us” t-shirt and protested on Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s front lawn in Ravenswood. One can argue that he popularized the famous protest slogan “16 Shots and A Coverup.” The 22-year-old activist now sets his sights on 2019, hoping to defeat Mayor Emanuel and claim the title of “youngest Chicago mayor”–creating a new air of leadership that represents Chicago’s communities. After his run as a public-speaking advocate for Senator Bernie Sanders, Green wants to bring forward a “progressive vision” to Chicago. “I’m running for mayor because it’s hard to find a candidate that can relate to the needs of everyday residents in the City of Chicago,” says Green. “Those who usually run for office talk about what they’re going to do; but when they get in office, they don’t prioritize the needs of everyday people.” Green continuously bashes Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the current city council in every public appearance. On an MSNBC

Town Hall, Green cried that “Rahm Emanuel doesn’t care about Black people.” In a CNN interview with Don Lemon, Green declared that Mayor Rahm Emanuel ”has to go” and that the city council is doing the mayor’s bidding. As recently as a month ago on Chicago Tonight, Green accused the current mayor of pay-to-play politics and misappropriating the use of TIF dollars. Green believes the change he desires will ultimately come with him winning office. “I’m running because the city needs new leadership, refreshing ideas, a new slate of politics,” says Green. “It’s going to take someone anti-establishment. It’s going to take somebody young who can unify the communities in Chicago.” “I think it’s time. I’m the only

one in the race who has been out in the trenches protesting hours a day and who has fought on behalf of families.” But Green has not always been a soldier in the current movement for police accountability. At the age of 15, the anti-Rahm activist shared a relationship–what Green refers only to as “business”– with Mayor Emanuel when the city chose him to be an ambassador for the anti-violence “Put the Guns Down!” campaign. Green was paid to promote a safe summer in Chicago Public Schools. Green cites renowned clergyman Father Michael Pfleger as a mentor in his community. Father Pfleger, a stalwart peace activist and community organizer, has had a tremendous influence on Green spiritually and politically. However, Evan Osnos’s profile on Father Pfleger in The New Yorker reveals that Pfleger and Emanuel have a candid relationship, even sharing text messages regularly. After the Laquan McDonald video surfaced, Emanuel took it upon himself to call Pfleger to plead his innocence. It is not confirmed whether Green was aware of this. When voters look to Green’s experience, they will more than likely find his non-profit organization “Majostee Allstars” and his public speaking. Majostee Allstars, which was formerly Skyrocketing Teens Corp, is an organization dedicated to creating youth leadership and role models. The organization has created coat drives and scholarship opportunities for Auburn-Gresham residents. On the organization’s Facebook page, notable figures such as Chance The Rapper and Arne Duncan are recognized for their previous speaking engagements with Majostee Allstars. Willie Wilson, another mayoral candidate, donated $1,000 to Green’s organization. Green says he maintains a positive relationship with Wilson and adamantly dismisses critics who say that the many Black candidates will split the “Black vote.” “Me and Willie Wilson are friends. We’re not against each other,” says Green. “At the end of the day, Black people don’t vote. We haven’t voted since Harold Washington–85 to 90 percent during his days and now we’re talking 30 percent today. The www.chicagodefender.com

Ja’Mal Green. question should be ‘How many candidates need to run to get people to vote?’ We’re not technically cutting each other out because we all have our own bases.” Green’s priorities as mayor include: an elected public school board; a complete audit of the city’s finances by an independent auditor; city-funded insurance for police officers (private insurance companies will assess the liability of individual officers); termination of the tax-increment-financing plan; decriminalizing cannabis and a push for state-wide legalization; a “triangular initiative” that pushes community college, trade school, and entrepreneurial boot camp for graduating CPS high school students who have the required number of community service hours. City-funded police insurance is a policy that has been discussed before and is held as “radical” by Green. After chanting for (and winning) new tasers for all of CPD post-Laquan McDonald, Green wants private insurance companies to assess the liability of individual officers in an attempt to prevent “bad apple” police officers on the force and curb massive payouts in police settlements. “We’re

paying 500 million dollars a year just in corruption,” he says. “We’re losing out on the progressive city that Chicago can be.” Green attributes his current run for mayor to a conversation with an unnamed mentor and his disenchantment with the current political landscape. “I would always say I would never be in politics,” recounts Green. “I had a conversation with one of my mentors. I said ‘It’s either me or you.’ I got so fed up with what was going on. I didn’t see real mobilization or candidates that speak to our problems.” Green does not plan on going away anytime soon if he fails to secure the mayoral seat. With this campaign, win or lose, he believes his platform will increase and be large enough for future causes and interests. At 22, he has many options to choose from. He could go to college, revitalize his R&B career, reassume the position of CEO at Majostee Allstars, or continue to do the community work he says he was called to do. “I have a plan but I can’t predict my moves,” says Green. “The long-term vision is to be mayor and then to be President.”

Gwendolyn Brooks Honored With New Sculpture By Katara Patton Defender Senior Editor On what would have been the renowned writer Gwendolyn Brooks’ 101st birthday, the City of Chicago received a special gift. On June 7, the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame unveiled a beautiful bronze statue in Brooks Park, 4542 S. Greenwood, to pay tribute to the woman who was the Illinois Poet Laureate for more than 30 years and the first Black person to receive a Pulitzer Prize. “People will know this wonderful poet we’ve had in Chicago all these years—101 years now—and understand more about her,” said Margot McMahon, the award-winning artist who created the sculpture. The tribute to Brooks includes a wooden porch, symbolizing where she often wrote as a young child, which invites visitors to pen their own haikus and post on the porch. There are also stepping stones along the path from the porch to the statue; the stones include quotes from Brooks’ work Annie Allen. The statue is also surrounded by large stones symbolizing Brooks’ ascension to one of the country’s best writers. The portrait itself symbolizes the teacher, mentor, editor, activist and inspirer she became. “I wanted to give the viewer the opportunity to meet Miss Brooks,” McMahon wrote. “I wanted to sculpt her listening to us and giving importance to our stories, like she

had for many school children.” “I wanted to sculpt her humanism that encouraged us to be all we could be. Her listening to stories gave importance to each person. Her witnessing each story and forging stories into literature gave humanity new insights….I wanted Gwendolyn Brooks to be here for us, looking down, as witness, to our own efforts at making a positive impact, here in her old neighborhood, and everywhere else.” Nora Brooks Blakely, Gwendolyn Brooks’ daughter, said moments before the unveiling of the sculpture that her mother was “not a crier.” She had only witnessed her mom shed tears a few times in her life, but she thought her mother would have been touched by the statue and would have shed a tear had she been alive on this historic day in Chicago. During the ceremony prior to the unveiling, held at Kenwood United Church of Christ across the street from the park, Blakely along with other community members shared fond memories of Brooks and her contribution to the literary world. “She loved words, listening and learning,” her daughter said. “She loved children, news…the idea of family, tea, jam, fried chicken, soap operas, socializing in her own way…giggling on early morning phone calls.” Most of Brooks’ work centered on Chicago, particularly Bronzeville. She was published at

a young age in the Chicago Defender. Many of her poems were published in the paper’s “Lights and Shadows” section. Her first book of poems, A Street in Bronzeville, was published in 1945. She went on to publish Annie Allen in 1950, which won her the Pulitzer. Her only narrative book, Maud Martha, was published in 1953. She taught at several colleges in Chicago and New York. She and her husband, Henry Lewington Blakely, Jr., had two children: Henry III and Nora. Brooks died on December 3, 2000, in her Chicago home. Brooks’ generosity, especially to young writers, was also highlighted at the unveiling ceremony. She funded poetry contests from her own pocket, recalled Mike Puican, a writer. She invited kids from all over Chicago to send in poems and she selected 30 students, published their work in a book and invited them to the University of Chicago, where she presented each student with a book and an “envelope of cash,” said Puican. She did this for 30 years. Puican also said Brooks funded a $500 prize for open mic contests. While he didn’t win one of her prizes, he did receive a personal note from her after he presented his work at one of the open mic contests. He said the note, which said “you are unique and splendid,” is now framed and hangs above his writing desk to this day. Haki Madhubuti, author, publisher and former professor at Chi-

I was still in school suspension, but this time I met Mr. McGrone, and we built a relationship. We had an instant connection so to speak; I didn’t care to talk to anybody or make contact with him at that point, but he was consistent. During the process of being in the program, he introduced me to a specific conversation that I never even thought about, such as dealing with parents who were struggling with drug addiction, growing up in foster homes and poverty, dealing with my past, all these elements that I didn’t care to talk about.” On the last day of the program, McGrone had the group write down a story about something that happened to them that caused damage and to find a way to pardon themselves. Walker had an emotional outbreak and McGrone was right there by his side. Walker stated, “He allowed me to grieve about it, cry about it, let it out, and let it go.” The bond was sealed and the connection between McGrone and Walker grew from there. Both gentlemen have attained levels of success. For McGrone, he went to Triton College in River Grove, Ill [played football but had an injury], Northern Illinois University, and Northeastern Illinois, where he completed his bachelor’s in psychology, and Governors State University, where he earned his master’s in educational leadership with a 3.8 G.P.A. He has run numerous mentoring programs [Men of Distinction, Ace Tech Ambassadors, Men of Valor and more] that gave students a chance to be successful. His innovative programs have helped students achieve. After joining the youth mentoring program in his senior year of high school, Walker was able to deal with the life struggles that had restrained him. During this period, he also joined the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), a youth entrepreneurship program for high school students. With the support and guidance of NFTE and committed mentors, Walker competed and won various business plan competitions. It was here that he became motivated and inspired to start his first business. He has since earned a bachelor’s degree from Morehouse College, a master’s degree from Yale University and master’s in education at Harvard University. When this happens, it’s not about how hard you get hit; it’s finding the strength to keep moving forward. It’s about having the will to continue despite the obstacles. McGrone gained strength earlier on through his mother’s prayers, God’s grace, and mercy. He will finish his last days at Rich South High at the end of this month. McGrone’s contract as Principal was not renewed because he said he has promoted prayer in school. A video even surfaced where it gained 17 million views because of his diplomatic strategy of education as a Principal. “I allowed the kids to pray and it revolutionized the school to the point an atheist group came after me, and it became known all over the world, but it also exposes me to the naysayers. positive direction but they [naysayers] wanted me fired because I promoted prayer.” Nevertheless, McGrone is moving into his next assignment in life where he will be releasing his book “The Twist and Turns of Possibility” at the end of July on Amazon and in bookstores. McGrone and Walker will be working together on a project titled “Wounds You Cannot See,” which is a book and a presentation. It will support the youth in an educational project to help them move forward and renew their thoughts as well as helping to restore the community. At one point there was talk of an ALDI being built on the lot but that never happened. The lot has sat empty for three years now.” Black-owned businesses such as Edwards Fashions, a men’s clothing store located at 11363 S. Michigan Ave.; Old Fashioned Donuts, 11248 S. Michigan Ave.; and Scott Enterprises, a tax preparation service, 11513 S. Michigan Ave., are among those still operating in the Roseland community. “Roseland has a stigma,” Eddie said. “Roseland has a lot of history but people don’t think about the positive things. Roseland once had a Sears, a Carson’s, JC Penney, jewelry stores… Back in the day, people wanted to shop in Roseland versus going downtown. But when Black people started moving in and the White business owners didn’t have anyone to take over, they just moved on. There is crime in all communities. It’s just that when crime happens in places like Oak Park, you don’t hear about it as much as when it happens in communities like Roseland.” At one point Eddie contemplated moving the store out of the community. “It was about 16 years ago that I thought about it,” Eddie said. “All www.chicagodefender.com

the foot traffic that was generated from the strip mall that was torn down was no longer there. After giving it some thought, I decided to stay in Roseland. I said to myself that the store has been in the community and is a place where people can get everything except mini blinds and drapery for their home and we have a price range for every income. I don’t think people should have to go outside of their community for goods and services. We know our customers by name and by sight.” Arbidella Burns-Leonard and her family are longtime Bass customers. “Mr. Davis is like a brother to me,” Burns-Leonard said. “I’ve been a customer for about 30 years and I’ve known him longer than that. I buy everything here, including beds. My daughter and mother-in-law shop here also.” Customers like Burns-Leonard and her family need a place like Bass so they can get quality merchandise at reasonable prices, Eddie said. He also points out that Big Box stores have had a negative impact on small independent businesses and that African Americans are sometimes not supportive enough of Black-owned businesses. “When Black people first found out that Bass was a Black-owned

store, they started going elsewhere to buy their furniture,” Eddie said. One thing that is key to success for Black-owned or any other business is keeping the overhead low, according to Black Entrepreneur .com, an online resource geared toward entrepreneurial success. Keeping his overhead low is a principle that Eddie said he knows well and abides by. In addition to himself and his wife, the Davises employ one salesman and two delivery personnel. The pair has three adult children but none of them work in the store. “I take my hat off to my kids,” Eddie said of his offspring. “They have excellent work ethics. Two of my kids work for the City of Chicago and one manages a local pawn shop. Both of my sons have degrees in business but running this store may not be their dream. Kids have to want to do something.” As for continuing his legacy, Eddie said, “I will be here for as long as God allows me to be here. If this is something my kids want to do, it’s theirs.” In addition to selling furniture, Eddie also does furniture repair and is considering expanding that side of the business. A Message for Divorced Dads on Father’s Day By Jeffery M. Leving, Esq. Defender Guest Writer Each Father’s Day is an opportunity for celebration and reflection. We celebrate the place of dads in the lives of their children, and we reflect upon fathers who are absent, whether because they have passed away, are serving in the military, are incarcerated, or are divorced. In the spirit of the holiday, I would like to focus on the importance of fatherhood and to suggest some points divorced fathers should remember to make the most of this day. While there have been days honoring fathers going back centuries, the holiday we celebrate today is about a hundred years old and has a Chicago connection. Inspired by the first Mother’s Day celebration held a year earlier, Sonora Smith Dold—later a student at the Art Institute of Chicago—initiated the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington, on June 19, 1910, to honor her father, who was raising six children alone. When children come together with their dads on Father’s Day, they are celebrating all the other days on the calendar that fathers play an important role in their upbringing—the day a father showed his son how to fish or taught his daughter to ride a bike, and the day he sat smiling through his son’s scratchy first violin recital or tried to appear calm as his daughter learned how to drive. For divorced or separated fathers spending this Father’s Day with their children, I offer three important pieces of advice.

1. Make the time you spend with your children memorable. These days, children have many distractions. Electronic devices offer easy escapes from the complicated and often stressful lives that children live these days. Research has shown that shared activities in which parents are interacting with their children are critical to maintaining a family bond, even if it’s only a game of catch or cooking dinner as a family. 2. Most children of divorce have an acute sense of fairness and would like to think of both their parents as equally worthy. That’s why it is important that you promote a positive image of the other parent to your child. Nothing is more important to your child than exhibiting a strong support structure with the other parent. 3. Listen. One of the hardest things about living separately from your children is keeping track of what’s going on in their lives. Grades, personal relationships, and the challenges of growing up all weigh heavily on children’s minds. The more fathers are in tune with their children’s setbacks and successes, the more their kids will come to them for emotional support and the stronger the bond will be. I know from personal experience that children of divorce can thrive and lead amazing lives, and it is those children and the fathers who raised them that we celebrate on this day. Father Comes Home from the Wars: Parts 1, 2 & 3 By Rick and Brenda McCain Let’s Play SPECTACULAR, FANTASTIC, THE MUST-SEE PLAY OF THE YEAR; these are words we usually don’t use to describe a theatrical play or anything for that matter; however, this play at The Goodman Theatre earned all these words and much, much more. Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan-Lori Parks Brenda and Rick graces us with her McCain masterpiece “Father Comes Home from The Wars: Parts 1, 2 & 3;” a play that refreshes the soul with pure delight. Parks’ composition is as poignant today as it was in the past. People are faced with decisions every day, and every life should have the opportunity to navigate their destiny on this earth. However, one man, a Texas slave named Hero (Kamal Angelo Bolden) is forced to make a decision that will change the course of his life, and one life-altering mistake will make him despised among his people. During the Civil War, a man of color not considered human but more like a boy to his owner, Hero, faces the decision of a lifetime. It’s a decision that can haunt the very soul of any man; a simple choice that will play a massive role and that could be catastrophic to his future and the future of the one he loves. Directed by Niegel Smith, artistic director at The Flea Theater in New York, this play is an incredibly bright light in the theater world. Smith has been produced by Classical Theatre of Harlem, HERE Arts Center, Hip Hop Theatre Festival, Magic Theatre, New York Fringe Festival, Phoenix Theatre Ensemble and the list goes on. Smith takes hold of Parks’ work of art and brings us into the life of Hero, a strong Black man who has the misfortune of having to choose to fight alongside his master. They are fighting against those who are fighting for Hero’s freedom. His master, a Confederate soldier, wants to keep men like Hero as slaves. This master, Colonel, played by the renowned William Dick, wants Hero to go with him into the war; Colonel promises Hero his freedom once he returns, but his slave wife Penny (Aime Donna Kelly) along with a few other slaves are gambling that Hero will choose to stay. The choice he makes could cause problems for him and the other slaves. Hero doesn’t believe in running away, being brainwashed to think he’s worth more as a good slave that obeys his master. His friend Homer, played to perfection by Jaime Lincoln Smith, finds this revelation out after his return from a failed escape. When Part 2 begins we see Hero’s master has captured a would-be captain from the Union army. Off into a war he never wanted to fight, Hero and his master, along with the captured soldier, find themselves lost, listening to the sounds of war. When gunshot and bombs are igniting in the air, Hero is sent on an errand for his master, at THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Goodman Theatre / Owen Theatre FATHER COMES HOME FROM THE WARS (PARTS 1, 2 & 3) Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan-Lori Parks, DIRECTED BY NIEGEL SMITH MAY 25 – JUNE 24 which point part two takes an interesting and somewhat intense turn. The Union soldier, in pain from a leg injury, sarcastically intimidates Colonel by questioning his leadership abilities and command by letting Hero go out of his sight, boasting that Hero may have run away. The Yankee soldier infuriates Colonel to the point that Colonel thinks of shooting the captured prisoner; however, Hero is a good slave and returns like a stray dog. The intense part comes when Colonel asks the Union prisoner a price for someone like Hero, and the prisoner changes the script and asks Colonel how much he thinks he would be worth. His reply shuttered the soul; he says that a White man’s worth is priceless and that he is glad to be a White man...and much, much more! You could have heard a piece of hair drop to the floor after that statement. With one side shocked that he mentioned (actual) words that are usually kept private, to the other gasping at the audacities that someone would utter such racist remarks; this play had everyone on the edge of their seats wanting more. When Colonel believes the war is getting too close for comfort, he orders Hero to get his things and follows him back to the safety of the Confederates. However, before they leave, Colonel grants the captured man, (whom we later find out is of the same nature as Hero), something he couldn’t even give to himself…freedom! The freed soldier (Demetrios Troy) requests one thing from Hero before he leaves. He wants Hero to come with him. Tempted by the thought of freedom, Hero is sworn in as a private in the Kansas Colored brigade. He puts on his war-torn blue coat under his confederate jacket. Part three is equally as stimulating and exciting. Without giving away the entire play, we find out if Hero comes home, and if Penny, his wife, will be there waiting for him. Things are about to get very interesting! The last part has so many twists and turns that we thought we were looking at the soap opera “As The World Turns.” Did we mention there was a talking dog; incredible and it works to perfection! Brittney Love Smith, who portrays Odyssey Dog, was brief but she nearly stole the show with her performance. Spot nor Lassie can compare! All the actors in this play are outstanding, and Kamal needs to receive some award for his brilliant performance. As Maya Angelou would say, Parks is a phenomenal woman; phenomenally. Sports by #TheBIGS After standing out in an official tryout last month, the ex-Simeon Wolverine has been awarded and signed a two-year, non-guaranteed contract and will play for the league’s Chicago team, the Chicago Ballers, in the inaugural season. The team will be coached by former Chicago State head coach, Tracy Dildy. Kezo’s Simeon career was full of ups and downs. He is a 3-time City Champion, and as a freshman received recognition for being one of the only two freshmen to earn varsity playing time, the other being Jabari Parker. But Kezo also missed his sophomore and senior seasons due to health issues. Even with his roller coaster high school career, he never lost the faith of his head coach Rob Smith. In a late February interview with The Bigs, Smith imagined how far his team would have went with Kezo playing. “Kezo has always been a special player. I look at what we were able to accomplish this year without him and I find myself thinking, wow, imagine how good we’d be with him playing.” Kezo Brown and the JBA’s Chicago Ballers will be at Wintrust Arena June 26.

South Siders Turning A Corner? Over the last 10 games, the White Sox are a respectable .500 Sports by #TheBIGS You don’t say this often about a team sitting 20 games under .500, but over the last 10 games, the White Sox have found sort of a groove. After helping their North Side counterparts out by taking 2 out of 3 games vs the Brewers in Milwaukee, they headed to Minnesota. They split a four-game set with the Twins. Then, headed to Boston where a familiar face was waiting to take them on, former White Sox ace, Chris Sale, was on the bump for game 1 and many started to etch in a easy W for the Red Sox but the South Siders had different plans. young bull Reynaldo Lopez was on the bump for the rubber match and threw an absolute gem. Racking up 6K’s, Lopez is on fire with his last 45 opponents hitting just .215 against him. No, the South Siders are no longer the bottom feeders of the AL Central.

This week brought back memories from 2016 and embodied the old saying, “breaking up is hard to do.” When it comes to former ace turned Philadelphia Philly Jake Arrietta, there are plenty that still only see him in Cubby blue; but with a chance to inch closer to the top spot in the National League Central, it was time to put old feelings behind us. Before they got down to business, Jake talked to The Bigs and had a message for fans still here in Chicago. “Over the four and half years I was here, we grew as an organization and as a team. Just to have the support day in and day out of 40,000 fans in the stadium and millions across the country and world, it’s meant everything to me and my family. I’m just very thankful and very happy. “ Now check out this week in Cubs baseball. After dropping Game 1 to the Phillies 6-1, the Cubs bounced back in a major way in Games 2 and 3 behind the bat of an unusual suspect, Jason Heyward. Coming to the plate in the bottom of the 9th down 2 runs, Heyward, who has been fighting his way back to a respectable batting average amid constant talk on if he’s been “worth” his contract, completely blew the top off of Wrigley when he blasted a game winning grand slam that gave the Cubs the 7-5 victory. “It’s about time,” he said jokingly from his locker in the clubhouse after drying off from a Gatorade shower. In game 3 the Cubs snagged a 4-3 victory behind Anthony Rizzo’s 2 RBIs and his 10th homer of the year. Up next were the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates. After a 3-1 Cubs W in game 1, ace Jon Lester took to the mound and unloaded a gem. Through seven innings, Lester threw 104 pitches giving up zero runs on just one hit. Two runs in the bottom of the 1st is all the Cubs would need for the 2-0 victory. The Pirates would take game 3 of the set 7-1 to avoid the seep but the damage had been done and the Cubs were on the way to Milwaukee to face the “Brew Crew” with a chance to leap over them for the division lead. In game 1 of the Cubs biggest series of the season, the cubbies erupted for 5 runs in the 11th inning to grab a 7-2 W in Milwaukee and take sole possession of first place in the NL central.
