CITY NEWS Automatic Voter Registration Implementation Process Begins The Secretary of State’s Office implemented the first part of Illinois’ landmark automatic voter registration (AVR) law on Monday, July 2. Eligible Illinoisans will now be able to register to vote on-the-spot when they visit Department of Motor Vehicles offices across the state. Automatic voter registration, which the Illinois General Assembly approved unanimously in 2017, modernizes and simplifies the registration process for voters who go into the DMV to update their license or state ID, and provides opportunities to register new voters more than ever before. The steering committee of the Just Democracy Illinois, a coalition of voting rights advocacy organizations, issued the following statement about today’s implementation: “With automatic voter registration, we’re finally modernizing and securing the electoral process for all eligible voters in Illinois.
While other states are moving backwards, creating unnecessary barriers and hurdles to the ballot box, now more than ever Illinoisans will be able to have up-to-date registration that will save time and hassle before they go vote. Still, there is more to be done to complete the process of implementing automatic voter registration in Illinois. All voters should still make sure their registration is up to date ahead of the November general election.” Now, when an Illinois resident goes to the DMV, their name will be checked against the state’s voter rolls to see if their registration is up-to-date. If their name is not on the file or their information is inaccurate, the DMV will ask eligible voters if they would like to register at their current address and will electronically update the voter’s registration on the spot.

Fannie Vera Polk Turns 100 Fannie Vera Polk is celebrating 100 years of life on July 8, 2018. At the age of 22, she started her career in nursing at Tennessee State University for two years. She returned to Chicago to attend Provident Nursing School, graduating at the top of her class and going on to be employed by the Visiting Nurse Association of Cook County, Michael Reese Hospital, University of Chicago Hospital, private duty nursing and eventually as supervisor at Cook County Hospital in the Emergency Room. Her nursing career spanned 50 years. During her career, Polk was also an active member of the Black Nurses Association and served on the Black Nurses Day committee. She also received several certificates and awards for her diligence in the medical field. Throughout her professional career, she managed to raise three sons and have a 34-year marriage to James K. Polk, a Chicago Police Officer. She is a pillar of the Chatham and West Chesterfield community.

Jackson Five First Contract To Be Auctioned On the heels of the death of Joseph Jackson, the father and founder of the Jackson Five, the first contract for the group will be auctioned on July 25 and 26 by Guernsey, a New York City-based auction house. The contract, signed by Joe Jackson on November 21, 1967, is with Steeltown Records. This contract signed The Jackson Five to their first professional label. Steeltown Records was located in Gary, Ind., and is best known for being the label with which The Jackson Five got their start. Their first album, The Steeltown 45s, was released on this label.
The group signed with the label after Joe Jackson invited the owner of Steeltown to come see the Jackson kids perform at Beckman Junior High in Gary. Hesitant at first, he eventually agreed and was impressed by what he saw. After the performance, Steeltown offered the Jacksons a record deal. The Jackson Five only recorded 8 songs with the label, 2 of which were unreleased. In July of 1968, The Jackson Five signed with Motown Records-- - a move that was reportedly controversial, as their contract with Steeltown had not yet expired. The contract for auction comes from the label’s original founder.

Chosen Few DJs: 2018 Picnic and Music Festival By Marshelle R. Sanders Defender Contributing Writer “In the beginning there was Jack ... and Jack had a groove, and from this groove came the grooves of all grooves. And while one day viciously throwing down on his box, Jack boldly declared ‘Let There Be House,’ and House music was born.” Chuck Roberts - Chicago 1987 This Saturday, July 7, 2018, The Chosen Few DJs are back at Jackson Park for The Chosen Few Picnic & Festival. What started as a small gathering of friends behind Chicago’s Museum of Science & Industry in 1990 is now one of the world’s longest-running events dedicated to House Music, attracting fans from all over the world. Nicknamed the “Woodstock of House” and the “Love Fest,” the family-reunion-style event features 12 hours of music and performances from the Chosen Few DJs – Wayne Williams, Jesse Saunders, Tony Hatchett, Alan King, Andre Hatchett, Terry Hunter and Mike Dunn, plus guest DJs and vocalists. The reunion kicked off because the DJs each moved to different areas in the United States and came back together one summer to reconnect. Chosen Few DJs Founder Wayne Williams states, “Two of my DJ’s, Andre Hatchett and Tony Hatchett [brothers] had a family reunion thing they were doing out there, so [we decided] after that event, every year on the 4th of July weekend, we will come back together and DJ together like we used to.” From that point on, the group of DJs have grown the picnic from 50 people to now more than 50,000 house music fans from nearly every continent. House music is a genre of electronic dance music created by club DJs and music producers in Chicago in the early 1980s. There are devoted fans that have come out to this event faithfully over the years. They come to feel the beat, love and positive vibes. South Sider Jasmyne E’lise, 32, credits her father as the one who started the House Music phenomenon in her household. “My father has been going to [the Chosen Few Picnic] since day one and would always come home and tell us what a great time he had. Wayne Williams and decided to crash the party. It’s been at least five years since then, and it’s become a celebration of life and a homecoming.” E’lise also said that every year all her family and friends from college travel to Chicago for this event. They all come together to enjoy each other and catch up on what they’ve missed throughout the year. “It’s the one time I have the opportunity to cut loose and be free of judgement because all of the people are there with me!” Another Chicago Native, Darvel Ahmad Stinson, 47, is going for the second year not only because he has been a House Music fan since high school [CVS class of 1988], but he had such a good time last year. “There’s great music, and it’s a beautiful atmosphere. Everyone I met and saw made me feel like it was one big family reunion. To be at an event with so many people enjoying each other’s company was a great feeling-- without any crime or incidents.” Leonard Ward, 45, from Milwaukee, Wis., has been attending for about ten years. Ward and his friends have booked hotel rooms, and they are ready to dance! “We spend our day enjoying the music, eating, socializing and dancing. We’re there about noon until it ends, weather permitting. I love the energy of house music.” The Birth of House The Beginning in the late 1970s and into the early 1980s, the seven then-teen DJs from Chicago’s South Side played their unique

the Tree of Life, First Impressions, the Playground and the Loft, a club of historic importance in the birth and development of house music. Along with a handful of other
legendary DJs including Frankie Knuckles at the Warehouse, Ron Hardy at the Music Box and Lil’ Louis on the West Side of Chicago, the Chosen Few were the DJs primarily responsible for popularizing the underground dance music that came to be known as House Music. And that sound will be heard through out this weekend. This year’s guests at the picnic and festival include House Music powerhouses the Basement Boys - DJ Spen, Karizma, and Teddy Douglas, Ralph Rosario from the legendary Hot Mix 5, and one of House Music’s hottest vocalists Sheree Hicks. “We’re featuring some local talent-- Terisa Griffin, Sheree Hicks, Chuck Roberts from the West Side of Chicago. That’s what our festival is about-- dancing, having fun and love, everybody eating food and sharing food, sharing drinks and just having a great time in our community-- and there’s no community like Chicago. A lot of time we hear about the wrong things in Chicago, but the citizens of Chicago are great, and we are proud to show them off at this event. vocalists are good friends and they know them by the work they put in by grinding in the streets of Chicago. This year is going to be another for the books as The Chosen few brings out local Chicago Talent mixed with more fun. There will be games and prizes for people to participate in as well. The themed dress code is Wakanda. People will be dressing up in their African clothing to show African-culture and pride while getting down to House Music. The only thing that has changed over the years is the economics of the event. As the attendance grew, it went from being free (with donations) to requiring an admission fee. Not only did the City of Chicago start to charge the DJs, but they also needed more staff to accommodate everyone. Williams stated, “The first 19 years we didn’t have to charge, we would pass the bucket around, and we came out of our own pockets to have this event. As more people attended, the city started to charge us, so then we had to start charging for entry. We had to get more security staff; we had to get more porta-potties, you know ev4 July 4 - 10, 2018

Most people charge $100, $200, $250 but our starting individual ticket is $40 and the presale tickets [earlier this year] were $25.” Tent packages can cost up to $450. There has been speculation of whether or not the festival will have to move next year with the new Obama Presidential Center being planned in the area. But Williams says fans can rest assured, they will not have to relocate. “They [City of Chicago] haven’t said anything to us where it would affect the event but the area that they’re talking about is West to

If you are wondering if you should drive, take the train or Uber, you can do all three: “Most people come through Lakeshore drive or Stony Island. Soulful Chicago Book Fair Slated for July 15 By Deborah Bayliss Defender Contributing Writer Calling all book lovers, literary types and anyone who just wants to have a fun day out: Asadah Kirkland, founder of Soulful Chicago Book Fair, is gearing up for this year’s festivities. Spanning four city blocks in the Woodlawn neighborhood, the all-day literary event takes place July 15 along 61st Street, between Cottage Grove and Martin Luther King Drive. “This is our third year,” said Kirkland. “People should come out to the Soulful Chicago Book Fair, because it’s obviously the most exciting Black book fair on the planet! Nowhere, have we ever seen a book fair where each block is organized by genre, has two stages, Grammy-level entertainers and over 100 black titles…combined in one place.” Last year’s event brought over 75 Black authors, as well as several literary organizations to the South Side of Chicago. “We pride ourselves on providing hundreds of authors, poets, and even composers the opportunity to share their unique perspectives with millions of literary fans across the city,” Kirkland said. Like last year, genres included fiction, non-fiction and children’s books. The lineup this year will also include special features on history, health and wellness. “Black people still buy books in this digital age because for so long, mainstream books have not

and authors are applauded for their hard work. We must support that as a community. We (took) what (could) be considered a book desert and created a neighborhood overflowing with our stories, written by us, for our benefit. Founded by Kirkand in 2016, the goal of Soulful Chicago Book Fair is to renew excitement around literacy and literary arts in the Black community. In addition to the hundreds of books available to peruse and purchase, visitors will be treated to world class entertainment, including vocalists, storytellers, spoken word artists, and dance groups on two stages. The event will feature literary
workshops hosted by experienced authors and publishing professionals that will focus on writing, publishing and marketing literary works. Featured titles at this year’s fair include Chancellor William’s “The Destruction of Black Civilization: Great Issues of a Race from 4500 B.C. to 2000 A.D.” Wiliams reportedly took sixteen years of research and field study to compile his book, which was to serve as a reinterpretation of the history of the African race. Originally published in 1971, Williams’ book was written at a time when many Black students, educators, and scholars were starting to make the connection between the way their history was taught and the way they were perceived by others and themselves. The author’s question of what has happened to Blacks that has left them at the bottom of world society, is still relevant today. Williams’ stance on the question is that many elements—nature, imperialism, and stolen legacies— aided the destruction of the Black civilization. Another local historian, Timuel D. Black, will be celebrated at this year’s fair. There is a youth essay writing contest named for the local activist and historian. The contest is for elementary and high school students who will be required to interview their oldest living relatives and write about the role their families played in Chicago history. City’s 38TH Annual Taste of Chicago Includes 26 New Vendors Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) recently announced the lineup of 73 restaurants that will participate at the 38th Annual Taste of Chicago – the world’s largest free food festival – this July 11–15 in Grant Park. Showcasing Chicago’s diverse culinary scene, this year’s list of 38 five-day vendors, 22 pop-up restaurants and 13 food trucks will offer Taste-goers an endless variety of more than 300 menu items to suit every palate. “Taste of Chicago brings together renowned restaurants from across the city to offer visitors and residents the opportunity to samTHE CHICAGO DEFENDER

The program now includes music education and other arts-based initiatives. Peterson Jr. also partnered with After-School Matters, a non-profit organization that provides after-school and summer program opportunities to more than 15,000 Chicago high school teens each year. In terms of protecting Black culture, Dr. Hughes said it’s up to the African-American community to take charge of their history, heritage and culture. “There is national evidence of aggressive cultural appropriation of African-American culture,” Dr. Hughes said. “That is being done through the revisionist writing of our history. It is up to us to not allow that to happen. It is imperative that we grasp the importance of preserving Black history and making it easily shareable, putting it in the hands of the next generation.” Dr. Hughes added that she and Peterson Jr. are the official representatives of a very important component of African American www.chicagodefender.com

I would highlight to try to find out for yourself. I know people read things online [like reviews] but be open to a new experience and give things a chance in the activities you are engaging in. What Comes Now in the Wake of What Black Parents Justice Kennedy’s Retirement? Must Do This Summer By Craig Chamberlain University of Illinois Social Sciences Editor Justice Anthony Kennedy is stepping down from the U.S. Supreme Court and his replacement could be confirmed this fall. What can we expect from the nomination process? And how might the court change? U. of I. political science professor Alicia Uribe-McGuire focuses her research on the politics of Supreme Court and other federal judicial appointments. She spoke with U. of I. News Bureau social sciences editor Craig Chamberlain. Some pundits are predicting a nasty fight over the nomination, even though Democrats would seem to have little power to influence the outcome. What political considerations might influence either the choice of nominee or the two parties’ strategies? The biggest political consideration will be the upcoming midterm elections. While the Democrats are at a disadvantage, since they have 24 Senate seats up and the Republicans only 9, this adds one more thing to the slate of election topics. With the balance of the court having the potential to really shift in a way that we have not seen in a number of years, this could add fuel for the Democrats in some of the closer races if a super conservative nominee is confirmed prior to the election. The only power that remains with the Democrats in the nomination process is to try to influence one of the Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee to join them in stalling the nomination in committee.
If Trump were concerned over the possible impact on midterm elections, he would likely go with a more moderate nominee. As for the choice of nominee, we will see what President Trump decides to do. Of the 25 names on his most recent list of potential nominees, only two are more liberal/moderate than Chief Justice John Roberts, while the rest are more conservative. Thus the new swing vote will either be Roberts or the newest member of the court. If Trump were concerned over the possible impact on midterm elections, he would likely go with a more moderate nominee. But if he is hoping to cement a conservative court, then he might take advantage of what could be limited time with a Republican Senate and try to push through a more conservative nominee. What do you think Kennedy’s exit might mean for the court, in terms of both his votes and his voice? Kennedy has been the swing vote on the Supreme Court since 2006, when Sandra Day O’Connor retired. During his tenure as the center of the court, we have seen some victories for liberals, most specifically the expansion of gay rights. However, we have also seen some solid victories for conservatives, including the recent cases of Janus v. AFSCME on public employee unions and Trump v. Hawaii on travel bans for specific countries – as well as one of the
Supreme Court’s more recent controversial decisions, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, on corporate and union funding of campaigns. With a rightward shift of the court, liberal victories seem less likely. Many pundits are suggesting that Kennedy’s replacement could lock in a solid conservative majority for years, if not decades. What might be the flaws, if any, in that assessment? Strictly by the numbers, yes, there will be a solid conservative majority for quite a while. Given that we will likely see a conservative nominee to replace Justice Kennedy, that would make a conservative bloc of five, with the most senior and eldest member of that bloc being Clarence Thomas, who is only 70 years old and does not seem likely to step down anytime soon. In contrast, the most senior members of the four-member liberal bloc are Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer, who are 85 and 79, respectively. Under this new court, we would expect to see more of the conservative victories like those that Kennedy helped decide. However, I do not think this means we will see the drastic changes that many conservatives are hoping for. For example, I would not expect this court to overturn the Obergefell v. Hodges decision on gay marriage or the Roe v. Wade decision on abortion. To do either would put the court’s legitimacy at stake and Chief Justice Roberts appears to be particularly sensitive to that, and thus unlikely to overturn those landmark decisions. So while we might see conservative expansions, I do not think we will necessarily see a reversal of liberal policies already in place.

Many people love to believe it’s due to income, fatherlessness, educational attainment of the parent and lack of parental involvement. I believe a major reason for the gap is we continue to close schools for the summer as if we are an agrarian economy. Very few Black youth will be farming this summer. If you multiply 3 months by 12 years, you will see the 3-year gap. There is nothing wrong with Black youth if their schools remained open during the summer and/or their parents kept them academically engaged. Middle-income parents who value education enroll their children in some type of academic experience during the summer. They also visit libraries, museums, zoos and colleges. Other parents allow their children to sleep longer, play more video games, watch more television and play basketball until they can’t see the hoop. These students will have to review the same work they had mastered in May in September. Black parents cannot allow their child to lose 3 months every year. Black parents cannot say they cannot afford the library. It’s free! Most museums have discounted days. A male friend of mine shared his experience with me when he took his family to the museum. He wondered why so many people were staring at him. His wife and children had to tell him he was the only Black man in the building! I am appealing to every father to take his children this summer to the library, museum, and the zoo. I am
appealing to every mother to do it if he won’t. We need every parent to make sure their child reads at least one book per week and to write a book report. I am reminded of the formula Sonya Carson used to develop Ben Carson to become the best pediatric neurosurgeon. This low-income single parent, with a third grade education, had enough sense to tell her sons to turn off the television, read a book and write a report that her sister would grade! I have a theory that I can go into your house and within 5 minutes tell you the type of student who lives there and predict their future. I believe that engineers, doctors, lawyers, accountants etc. need different items in their house than ballplayers, rappers, and criminals. I am very concerned when I visit a house that has more music and downloads than books. My company, African American Images, has designed a special collection of books for boys. Research shows one of the major reasons boys dislike reading is because of the content. The set is titled Best Books for Boys. We also have one for girls, parents and teachers. Enjoy your summer. Let’s close the gap. I look forward to your child’s teacher asking your child what did you do for the summer? And your child answering: we went to the library, museum, zoo, colleges and other great educational places. City.Life.Style Let’s Eat: Redwood Luxe Bar and Grill By The Black Foodies Owners and business partners of Redwood Luxe Bar and Grill, Damien Gibson and Adam Shorter, have brought a taste of Chicago’s cosmopolitan restaurant scene to the suburbs. Redwood Luxe Bar and Grill, located at 3462 Vollmer The Black Foodies Road in Olympia Fields, brings a modern sophistication while not being pretentious. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and great for family outings or for date nights. When we visited, the weather was very nice so we decided to dine outdoors on the patio. We began our dining venture with an appetizer of Redwood’s Grilled Chicken Wings. The wings come with an option of four dipping sauces: mango habanero, spicy buffalo, tangy BBQ or, our choice, garlic parmesan. Four large wing pieces came with the order and were grilled to perfection. The charred exterior of the wings added a smoky richness and contrast in texture that we both appreciated. The garlic parmesan dipping sauce proved to be a great complement; its on-point consistency allowing it to cling nicely to the wings. Being a garlic lover, I felt the sauce lacked a bit of garlicky punch, while Miss Coretta felt the sauce was balanced flawlessly. Redwood’s grilled chicken wings were mighty impressive. Opting for a second appetizer, we decided to try Redwood’s Crab Bites, ten bite-sized balls of lump crab, deep-fried to a golden brown. And, talk about good eating . . . the end result was sheer “crabliciousness!” The outer crust had the perfect crunch factor, while the moist interior of the lump crab seemed to just melt in your mouth. We were also impressed by the crab-to-binder ratio. Redwood did not skimp on the crab, and the spicy remoulade sauce added a burst of flavor, elevating an already spectacular piece of culinary work. We next sampled the Cajun Catfish, which was topped with a crawfish étouffée and served with seasonal vegetables and rice. The catfish was masterfully prepared! The fillet was delicate and flaky, and the grilling over an open flame added some wonderful charring. The charring made the dish attractive and superbly scrumptious, as well. The rice and veggies were properly prepared, adding freshness to the dish. The crawfish étouffée, though, slightly missed the mark. While the crawfish were bayou fresh, the addition of a sauce would have more fully tied the dish together. Overall, this Cajun creation is a dish well worth trying. To close out our dining experience at Redwood Luxe Bar and Grill, Miss Coretta and I split a slice of their Salted Caramel Cake. The salted caramel transported us to a very comforting place. The cake was super moist – similar to a tres leches cake - and topped with dark and white chocolate. The salted caramel cake was THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Hughley Shoots Straight on Police, Mark Fuhrman and Racial Profiling By Allison Kugel Defender Guest Writer Hailed as one of the most prolific standup comedians of the past three decades, D.L. Hughley has never been afraid to dig into ethnic stereotypes, economic disparity, relationships, politics… nothing’s off limits. His words are explicit and paint an accurate portrait of societal contradictions and pain in fast forward. From his legendary standup material and his nationally syndicated radio show, “The D.L. Hughley Show,” to his upcoming Netflix series, The Fix (a hybrid game show/issues-based panel talk show), Hugley’s platform as an outspoken advocate of civil rights is unconventional and tinged with off-color language. But as he shared with me during our conversation, he believes that to reach people with a heavy message, you’ve got to get them to let their guard down through laughter. His latest book, How Not To Get Shot: And Other Advice From White People, pulls no punches and offers no apologies, as Hughley puts forth his satirical and bitingly sarcastic take on racial profiling, police shootings, President Trump, and the advice that White people often give Black people on how to adequately assimilate into American society. Nothing is off limits as he covers topics like Black names versus White names, dressing Black versus dressing White, how White people advise Black people to talk to the police, neighborhood profiling, “the race card,” and a host of other hot button, racially charged issues. D.L. goes in. The book doubles down on D.L.’s already controversial public platform. It is filled with humor, sorrow and irony, and it will make you a bit uncomfortable no matter what side of the fence you are on. Allison Kugel: Did the motivation to write your latest book, How Not To Get Shot (And Other Advice From White People), come from a place of fear, love, hope, anger…? D.L. Hughley: I think all those things. Fear, frustration, anger… they all kind of mirror each other. When I was writing this book, I realized that society would never take a good look at itself unless you make it feel good; unless you give them something to make their ears tickle a little bit. My overall thought was to be clear enough where it doesn’t seem trite, and to be satirical enough where people can’t tell if I’m being serious or not. And I needed it to be angry enough to mirror the people THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
who go through these things all the time. Watching people of color being slaughtered at the hands of police is nothing new. I grew up in Los Angeles, so it happened quite often. Everybody always wants to say they want to start this conversation, and this book is my contribution to that conversation. Allison Kugel: What do you tell your kids when they ask if they’re safe? D.L. Hughley: That we’re going to do the best we can to make sure. I think that America’s never seen a person of color that lost their life where the powers-that-be were compelled to do something about it; where they were actually moved to action. Whether it was Emmett Till or Trayvon Martin, I think they have a certain kind of distance when it comes to Black people dying. The first thing they’ll say is, “Well, if you wouldn’t have done this?” or “You shouldn’t have done that.” The impetus for me writing this book was going on Megyn Kelly’s show (Megyn Kelly TODAY). I went on Megyn Kelly’s show and we were going to talk about the police and policing, and she had Mark Fuhrman (disgraced detective in the 1995 O.J. Simpson murder trial) on the same show. She didn’t tell me he was going to be on, and he went on before me. They had Mark Fuhrman on to talk about policing. He got fired for lying. He lied so much that he got a murderer off. He got O.J. off! And this is how we start the conversation about policing, and about good police versus bad police? Even other police will tell you that Mark Fuhrman was a bad [cop]. That’s how they decided to start the conversation that day. That’s when I knew I would write this book. Allison Kugel: There was one page in the book where you ask the reader, “Who can say the “N” word?” and then you answer, “Fucking Black people, and that’s it.” Why do you even
want to have the right to use the “N” word? Why use it? D.L. Hughley: I don’t want to have the right. I wish it didn’t exist, but it does so I won’t pretend that it doesn’t. The most annoying thing is that people will blame the use of the “N” word on Black people. They’ll say, “Well, if you didn’t use it, then maybe we wouldn’t use it. You use it in hip hop all the time.” That word has been a part of the American lexicon since the early 1700s. Hip hop’s been around since 1975. What came first, the “N” word or The Sugarhill Gang? To pretend that Black people can stop saying it and then all people will stop feeling that way about us, and that it will go away, is ridiculous. There has never been a word in our lexicon that equates to that word, not one. Allison Kugel: On page 164 of your book, you cite the statistic that 72 percent of Black births in the United States are from unwed mothers, and you do point out that it includes women who have partners but are unmarried, and women who simply choose to not be married. Then you go on to point out that one reason Black women often outnumber eligible Black men is because so many Black men are in prison. Do you pin some of that on former President Bill Clinton’s now infamous 1994 crime bill that ultimately led to the mass incarceration of black men in the United States? D.L. Hughley: Here’s what I will say… I remember when they banned assault rifles (a ten-year ban passed by United States Congress in 1994). It wasn’t because mass shooters were using them. It was because gang members were using them. Bill Clinton banned them at the time because of that. Bill Clinton gave Black community members, Black community leaders and elected officials, what they asked for, which was relief from crime. And now they get to pretend that they didn’t ask for it. They asked for that. Black leaders asked for harsher sentences, and now they get to pretend that they didn’t. I remember that Bill Clinton had a Republican congress. Allison Kugel: Do you believe there is a reason for everything that happens, and that you are here at this time, exactly as you are, for a greater purpose? D.L. Hughley: I think I am supposed to give a higher level of clarity and specificity to the things I see. All an artist can ever be is what they see. I want my people, and by that, I mean all human beings, to see themselves. And I don’t want people to make excuses. [Recently] I watched people use the Bible to justify putting children in chains. Those are the same scriptures they used to put Black men in chains. If there is anything I do, it’s to be an artist who is clear enough so that people will get that I’m saying exactly what I saw. Allison Kugel: Where is the elusive bridge of communication, for example, between police officers and the Black community? D.L. Hughley: Here’s the way we have a dialogue; it starts with accountability. The same accountability you demand from us as a community, we should demand from you as [law enforcement] professionals. When a mayor in Los Angeles says we need to teach our children to respect the police, well children are just children and that’s why you have parents. You have to guide them at that age, and in the process they make a lot of mistakes. But is a reasonable solution to a communal problem to say that children need to be more responsible than trained adults? Allison Kugel: What do you think the police are afraid of? D.L. Hughley: I can’t speak for them. I can’t tell you what they’re afraid of. But I can tell you this, that I don’t only teach my children to respect the police, I teach them to fear the police. If the police treated us like the human beings that they say they serve, then we would be
okay, but they don’t. What the police do is what they’ve always done to Black people, to keep us in our place. You’re suspicious if you’re somewhere you don’t belong. The reason we have all these policemen getting called is because [Black people] are in places where people aren’t used to seeing them or are uncomfortable seeing them. That’s always been their mission. Maybe we should change what their mission is. Maybe it shouldn’t be to just keep us in our place. Maybe it should be to treat us like citizens. If you call the police on somebody for barbequing, for sleeping in a common area at Yale, or walking to a mall, or eating at certain places, what that tells you is the police’s goal is to make society feel safe from us. I got the police called on me in my own neighborhood, and I’ve lived there for seventeen years. My wife has had that happen and my children have had that happen. You can look around Calabasas (a suburb in Los Angeles’s northern San Fernando Valley) and you wouldn’t see many people who have lived there longer than me, but I’m the stranger! Allison Kugel: Have you had some positive interactions with the police? D.L. Hughley: Sure. Generally, they work for me (laughs). I have three police officers that work for me. But, it’s been ninety percent [nonsense] and ten percent cool. I think White people would say it’s the other way around. D.L. How to Find the Best Possible Care for Your Loved One Five Key Questions to Ask When Choosing a Nursing Home By Steven M. Levin Placing a loved one in a longterm care facility is a heartbreaking decision, and unfortunately it’s one that sometimes must be made quickly as symptoms take a turn for the worse and a patient can no longer be cared for at home. The process of selecting a facility can be overwhelming and stressful for adult children who want to ensure their parents receive the best possible care. How can people who’ve never faced this decision before evaluate the available options and make an informed choice? Long-term care facilities are licensed, regulated, inspected and/ or certified by a number of agencies at the state and federal level, including the Illinois Department of Public Health and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Medicare.gov maintains information on all Medicare and Medicaid-certified nursing homes in the country. Searching by your zip code will allow you to review ratings on staffing levels, health inspections and quality measures for facilities in your area. But information obtained during these inspections is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to assessing the quality of care at a facility. Patient advocates encour-
age potential residents and their family members to visit facilities in person before making a decision. Here are some questions to investigate on your visit: •How does this facility ensure it delivers person-centered care? Person-centered care treats a resident as more than just a diagnosis. That means care providers are actually supposed to know the unique individual they are caring for, and that interactions with the resident are informed by respect for his or her values, beliefs, and abilities, past and present. Care providers use effective and empathic communication, and build and nurture authentic, caring relationships that treat everyone with dignity and respect. They create a supportive community for individuals, family, and staff that provides opportunities for engagement, autonomy, joy, comfort, and meaning, even in the midst of the losses that accompany illness. Person-centered care doesn’t happen by accident. Facility staff should be able to demonstrate how they’ve embraced this value. •How does this facility foster and protect self-determination? Current regulations call for making the resident the center of control for decision-making about aspects of his or her medical care

This means that, to the extent possible, the resident participates in care planning, makes decisions about requesting or refusing particular treatments, and selects companions and activities that reflect his or her interests. Does this facility allow residents to choose their roommates? Does it provide transportation to community activities outside the facility? In general, what are the policies and practices the facility has adopted that ensure the resident participates in decisions that affect him or her? •Does this facility have special characteristics or service limitations that might affect the quality of care now or down the road? Facilities are required to provide potential residents with written notice of any special characteristics or service limitations that might affect care. This could be limitations
of the physical space that make life difficult for people with certain kinds of physical disabilities, or a religious affiliation that influences the approach to end-of-life care. What happens when the patient needs psychiatric or dental care? Unexpected discharge or transfer is hard on elderly people in fragile health, so you want to understand exactly what a facility can—and can’t—provide before committing to it. •Is this facility well-staffed, and how well are the nurses and support care staff trained and compensated for their work? Whether facility owners cut staff to increase profits at the top, or they simply cannot find enough qualified personnel to do this demanding and important work, the outcome is the same: understaffed residential facilities. The risk of injury, neglect, and abuse is much higher in facilities without the proper patient-to-staff ratios. These figures for every facility in the U.S. are available through the Medicare.gov database and provide a good guideline for assessing whether a facility will be safe. In addition, be sure to inquire on your visit about special training staff has received to keep them up to date on current research and best practices in elder care, and note whether their compensation is in
line with or above average. •Does this facility include an arbitration clause in its admission contract? Arbitration clauses are often included as one small part of a multipart agreement in the admission contract, and residents or family members often sign on without understanding that they may be waiving their right to a jury trial or other rights under state law. If a facility routinely includes this clause, a potential resident may refuse to sign it or strike it out of multipart forms. Request detailed information on this issue and, if you are still unsure, seek legal advice before signing any documents. Nothing can completely assuage the anxiety and confusion adult children experience when they must seek residential care for their parents. But excellent facilities do exist, and you can arm yourself with information on up-todate standards and practices that will help you find a safe and nurturing environment for your loved one. “Text Neck” Means Trouble For Those Addicted to Mobile Devices Well before the invention of cell phones, medical experts agreed that poor posture is the leading cause of back and neck pain. But the explosion of 24-7 cell phone use has seriously compounded this problem-- and even given rise to a new medical condition: “Text Neck.” “Text neck” is the nickname for all the back, neck and spinal issues affecting those who spend too much time on their cell phones and mobile devices. It is due to the constant hunching over people do to peer into their mobile screens, which malforms the spine. Physicians are reporting children as young as eight years old are affected. Collectively, Americans check their smartphones over 8 billion times per day. will have spine issues due to this will be astronomical.” He says the best way to check your mobile device is to stand up straight and look at your device at eye level instead of reading it next to your torso, which usually results in your chin going down towards your chest. Or lie on your stomach when spending long periods of time on your phone. This provides a safe and natural passive isometric exercise to restore the natural curve to the neck. When working at a computer, take a short break every 15 or 20 minutes, then move around and change your body and head positions. •Adjust your workspace. Set your computer monitor at eye level. Raise your smartphone to eye level rather than lowering your head. Get a tablet holder to elevate your device close to eye level. If possible, get a standing desk or an ergonomic chair. Don’t slouch at your desk.
•Use voice-to-text as often as possible. This cuts down on the amount of time you are looking down at your phone. •Hold Your Phone at Eye Level. Do not look down and allow your chin to move towards your chest when you are on your mobile device. This causes the back of the neck to support the head instead of the shoulders. “Taking some preventative measures,” Gearhart says, “is much easier than trying to treat a spine that is already out of alignment.” Robert Gearhart, the co-inventor of Body Aline (www.bodyaline. com), is an operating room nurse. He noticed an increasing number of patients with back problems, and teamed with Jason Bowman, a certified personal trainer and former engineer, to create Body Aline.
