A new collection by Nike showcases the talents of Chicagoan Julian Victor LaMarr Gaines, 26. The Nike Collection is called Game Worn and it updates two brands of sneakers. Nike will donate profits from the collection to select local charities in Chicago supporting sport, art and creativity. In the collection, Gaines reimagines each shoe as one that has already been played in or run in. “The Game Worn collection is all about sharing my personal story and using that inspiration to help empower Chicago’s next generation of creatives to dream, explore and to come together,” explains Gaines. “I want to open our eyes to the power of sport, Julian Victor LaMarr Gaines art and creativity and really give back to the kids in my community in a powerful way. I’m not only excited for Chicago to embrace this incredibly personal project, but also use this moment to push our city forward.” His latter goal of empowering the community came to life this week with a four-day summer camp at South Shore Cultural Center with a series of programming in art, writing and more for more than 40 teenaged participants. The initiative will culminate with a pop-up experience at Chicago Boutique Notre, 118 N. Peoria, on Saturday, July 21. The work students created in the workshops will be displayed next to Gaines’ shoes. Nike will also award 500 scholarships to kids across the city, where they can connect one-on-one with teachers and mentors who can feed their creative curiosity. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) defines PTSD as a psychiatric disorder that can occur in individuals who experience or witness a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a serious accident, a terrorist act, war/combat, sexual assault or other violent personal assault. 15 minutes before paramedics began CPR. “If you see or experience something extreme, or even having to live with figuring out which way to walk through a neighborhood so you don’t get shot, it’s not normal ,but we’ve normalized it because of the constant trauma,” Professor Dulaney said. Shootings in Chicago are so common and expected that local news media chronicle and count the shootings. A Chicago SunTimes database lists the names of every victim who was killed by another person within city limits in 2018. Information on the database site states it will be updated daily. Sadly, it’s become part of the reality played out in Chicago for years now. To date, 244 people have been shot and killed and 1,284 have been shot and wounded in Chicago, according to the site heyjackass.com, which compiles statistics from several Chicago media outlets. Things are so bad that three days without a homicide makes news headlines and is counted as something to celebrate. information for long stretches of time creates a breeding ground for PTSD, the experts say. Relying on information from the Boston University School of Public Health and pointing out the police killings of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice and Philando Castile that sparked national outrage, a Feb. 2018 Newsweek article, states that Black people are three times more likely to be killed by police in the United States than White people, and further states that with a greater degree of structural racism tend to have higher racial disparities in fatal police shootings of unarmed victims. A 2017 HuffPost article states the growing body of evidence suggests Black Americans may experience a specific type of PTS, called race-based traumatic stress induced by repeatedly witnessing traumatic instances in person and via social media. According to Mental Health America, a community-based nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness and to promoting the overall mental health of all Americans, in 2018 race-based exclusion from health, educational, social and economic resources, all contribute to the socioeconomic disparities experienced by African Americans. Racism continues to have an impact on the mental health of
African Americans. Negative stereotypes and attitudes of rejection continue to occur with measurable, adverse consequences, according to the nonprofit organization. A 2016 study published in the American Journal of Public Health revealed Black men are nearly three times as likely to be killed by “legal intervention” than White men. American Indians or Alaska Natives are also nearly three times as likely and Hispanic men are nearly twice as likely, the study suggests. “It affirms that this disparity exists,” Dr. James Buehler, clinical professor of health management and policy at Drexel University in Philadelphia, who authored the study, said in a 2016 CNN news article. “My study is a reminder that there are, indeed, substantial disparities in the rates of “legal intervention” deaths, and that ongoing attention to the underlying reasons for this disparity is warranted.” African-Americans and African-American parents are already aware they are not treated fairly by the police. It’s widely known that African-American parents provide their children with hopefully, lifesaving instructions on how to behave should they ever encounter the police. Living this way is highly continued on page 4

traumatic for the parents and the youth. The U.S. Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health sites the following statistics: •Adult African-Americans are 20 percent more likely to report serious psychological distress than adult Whites. •Adult African-Americans living below poverty are three times more likely to report serious psychological distress than those living above poverty. •Adult African-Americans are more likely to have feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and worthlessness than are adult Whites. •And while African Americans are less likely than White people to die from suicide as teenagers, African Americans teenagers are more likely to attempt suicide than White teenagers (8.3 percent v. 6.2 percent). Black Students 4 July 18 - 24, 2018
Adult African-Americans are 20 percent more likely to report serious psychological distress than adult Whites. Students of color also face harsher punishments in school than their White peers, which lead to a higher number of youth of color being incarcerated and coming into contact with the juvenile-justice system and at an earlier age. When it comes to children, information from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that all children may experience very stressful events that affect how they think and feel and that most of the time, children recover quickly and well. However, children who experience severe stress, such as from an injury, from the death or threatened death of a close family member or friend, or from violence, will be affected long-term. More than 60 kids 15 and
younger, as of July 3, have been shot in Chicago this year, according to the Chicago Tribune. It’s common for Chicago parents to not allow their children to play outside for fear of their children being caught in gang crossfire. When children develop longterm symptoms (longer than one month) from this kind of trauma which can interfere with their relationships and activities, they may be diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the CDC. Treatment The first step to treatment for PTSD for children and adults is talking with a healthcare provider www.chicagodefender.com
to arrange an evaluation. Because children who have experienced traumatic stress may seem restless, fidgety, or have trouble paying attention, traumatic stress symptoms can be confused with symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Some of the issues surrounding treatment are that few mental health professionals have the levels of cultural sensitivity needed to help African- Americans with PTSD and need to be trained to understand the historical and social context of this trauma, according to the HuffPost article. There’s also a high level of stigma attached to seeking help for mental illnesses in the Black com-
munity, which can also impede getting help. The prolonged emotional effects of experiencing and even witnessing racist treatment can also lead to hypertension and even life expectancy. As for the racially charged times African-Americans are experiencing, Professor Dulaney said we’ve experienced these times before. “It’s just that now we have social media bringing it to the forefront,” Dulaney added. “In 1866 after slavery, we had the Ku Klux Klan creating fear. Every time it seems Blacks start to push forward, they push back with racism. In general when Barack Obama was elected, there was a new, blatant and bold empowered resurgence of racism that wasn’t accepted prior to Obama being elected. It’s not the majority of Whites, but the ones who are committed to defending their idea of White power.” As for Black-on-Black crime, the counting continues…and the stress increases. Mayoral Candidates React to Weekend Police-Involved Shooting On Saturday, police shot and killed South Side barber Harith Augustus in the South Shore neighborhood. A protest broke out immediately following the shooting, resulting in arrests and general mayhem as bottles were thrown. As information still circulates— including the release of a body cam video-- many opinions and statements circulated as well. Below are the responses of a few mayoral candidates and an opinion piece from a concerned citizen. Former Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, Candidate for Mayor, Statement On The Recent Police-Involved Shooting “These kinds of shooting incidents are a tragedy. As a city, we all lose when they occur. I offer my condolence to the victim’s family. At first blush, this shooting appears to be justified, based on what we see in that video and I’m pleased with its quick release. We are hoping that a thorough investigation gives us the truth as to what happened. But let us also be clear that the shooting victim refused to comply with the officers. He appears to reach for a gun. At that point, he leaves the officers with little to no choice but to shoot in defense of their own lives. But incidents like this underscore the need for a new mayor who can bring us together, promote understanding and open dialogue”. Mayoral Candidate Dorothy Brown Suggests Next Steps As the Chicago Police Department (CPD) moves forward with By William J. the investigation of Saturday’s shooting of Harith Augustus, I’d like to acknowledge the swift actions by Superintendent Johnson and his team by releasing a portion of the body cam video from the fatal incident. There is much more information needed to assess the incident properly. What this incident highlights, in stark detail, is the lack of trust that exists between CPD and communities of color. While past actions should not be a determinant in this case, we know that a lack of transparency from CPD in the past has led to where we are today. I offer the following as we move
forward: •I encourage Superintendent Johnson and his team to over-communicate on the progress of this investigation, and host regular press conferences to keep the community updated. •COPA should be actively involved in communicating with the public as well, so we are all aware that the investigation is open and transparent. •More details from the body cam video should be released as soon as possible. That includes the body cam video of the officer who first approached Mr. Augustus, as well as that of all other of-
ficers on the scene, so that all aspects of the videos can be seen. In addition, the audio of all videos should be released as well. •The Superintendent should visit the Augustus family to offer his condolences and assure them that there will be a fair and thorough investigation. Lori Lightfoot Calls On COPA The loss of Mr. Harith Augustus’ life is a tragedy, and my condolences and prayers go out to his family, particularly his young child and other loved ones as they mourn his death. “It is critically important that
Black Lives Matter, Blue Lives Too gustus, you don’t have to be a big fan of the Chicago Police to agree with the outcome. It’s obvious that the suspect had no intentions of being arrested with the semiautomatic weapon he had concealed, posing a threat not only to the police, but to the community as he attempted to escape. I commend Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson for releasing the video as early as he did. The South Shore neighborhood where the incident occurred is a high
crime area. There are hundreds of people walking down the street, and getting on and off the Metra train and buses everyday in that area. You might argue that the suspect has rights, and I would agree with you, but the public has rights too, and the police is held accountable for the crime that occurs in our community. the police didn’t mistake a phone or wallet for a gun. No one wants to be carjacked, killed, raped, or have one of their loved ones held up after shopping for groceries. In the wake of Father Michael Pfleger, (priest of St. Sabina Church) historic peace march that shut down the Dan Ryan expressway, which drew support from both the Mayor and the Police Superintendent, there have been far too many innocent people being killed, and the gun violence must
the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) move forward swiftly, independently, and thoroughly in its investigation. The public has the absolute right to understand all of the circumstances that led to the use of deadly force against Mr. Augustus. “Superintendent Johnson made a wise decision in releasing a body camera video expeditiously. Consistent with policies recommended by the Police Accountability Task Force and adopted by the city in February of 2016, all relevant videotapes, audio, and initial police reports must be released as soon as possible, balancing the importance of the integrity of the COPA investigation. “In addition, COPA must address the subsequent circumstances in which members of the police engaged with observers and protesters who gathered in the wake of the shooting. With the caveat that video can only provide a snapshot in time from a particular vantage point, there are several images of police interactions with members of the public that are very troubling. The images I saw from a variety of sources raise serious questions about supervision, use of force and equipment, as well as tactics deployed. “The public has a right to understand the circumstances that led to injuries of the public and police at the Jeffrey Plaza and adjacent parking lots. It is imperative that both the CPD and COPA address these issues as swiftly as possible in the coming days.”
end. Kids can’t even play outside. We all should be thankful that no police officers or innocent people were shot during the attempted arrest. But we must be careful of crying wolf every time a police officer shoots and kills someone. The summer is not over, let’s remain vigilant against police officers who are racially bias, violate our civil rights and demonstrate unwarranted infliction of excessive force, but let’s also not forget to thank the officers who risk their own lives to save one of ours. Community City Announces Expansion of Mental Health Training By Deborah Bayliss Defender Contributing Writer Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently announced expansion of mental health training and services in an effort to improve crisis response for individuals with mental illness as part of the city’s ongoing police reform. Some encounters between Chicago police and individuals with mental illnesses have ended in police involved shootings. “Training first responders and meaningfully engaging with the community are two equally important parts of ensuring the City is providing an effective and compassionate mental health emergency response,” said Mayor Emanuel in a press release. “Together, we can reduce stigma and better meet the needs of individuals who may be experiencing a mental health crisis.” Called, The Mental Health Outreach Project, the program provides free mental health awareness training in an effort to reduce stigma and better recognize the symptoms of a mental health crisis to support improved emergency response. The pilot project grew out of Mayor Emanuel’s Citywide Mental Health Response Steering Committee, a coordinated effort between the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH), the Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC), the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and mental health advocates to address how first responders can better serve individuals with mental health challenges.
“Training first responders and meaningfully engaging with the community are two equally important parts of ensuring the City is providing an effective and compassionate mental health emergency response.” Mayor Emanuel Last year, nearly 600 community members in Austin, Garfield Park and North Lawndale received free mental health awareness training. Among them were school staff, faith leaders, and staff and volunteers from community-based organizations. Following what the City is calling a successful mental health outreach project on Chicago’s West Side, the Citywide Mental Health Response Steering Committee is expanding the program to Chicago South Side Roseland community. Also part of the training, residents learned about support services available from the City and community organizations, including the option to request a specially trained Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) trained police officer in the event of a crisis. Additionally, at the recommendation of the Police Accountability Task Force report on police reform, the Office of Emergency Management and Communications, is also launching Smart911,
a free, voluntary and secure service to help families and facilities plan for an emergency. By creating a Safety Profile, residents can include critical personal and family details such as disabilities, behavioral and medical notes, and possible mental health triggers so that first responders will have more information to better assess emergency situations and mental health crises. “For the last two years, we have been focused on making CPD a model agency in Crisis Intervention and this latest step of expanded mental health training for police officers allows us to provide quality public safety services to more affected individuals on the South and West sides of the city,” said Superintendent Eddie Johnson. ‘We will continue our efforts to improve training and professional development so CPD can forge stronger relationships with all communities as we work to make Chicago safer.” Training includes police officers
and all OEMC 911 call takers and dispatchers in crisis intervention and de-escalation, as well as enhancements to the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Jane Addams College of Social Work, reportedly evaluated the effectiveness of the training on the West Side and confirmed the pilot showed decreased stigma associated with mental illness, increased knowledge and comfort in contacting a CIT trained police officer, increased knowledge about mental health and increased confidence that they could assist someone in need. “The evaluation showed that members of the targeted communities engaged in the trainings and benefited in terms of reduced stigma and increased knowledge,” said Amy Watson, PhD, UIC Jane Addams College of Social Work. “They are now better prepared to assist themselves and others to access help in the event of mental health difficulties or crises.”
“This project is no longer a pilot. Based on the evaluation of the Westside Outreach Project, we now know now we have a model that works to effectively reduce stigma and improve crisis response in our communities,” said Kennedy Forum Executive Director Kelly O’Brien. “Expanding this work in the Roseland community is one important next step in what we hope will be a continued commitment to train thousands of residents in communities across the City.” The Citywide Mental Health Response Steering Committee includes representatives from the Mayor’s Office, Chicago Police Department, Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC), Chicago Fire Department, Chicago Department of Public Health, NAMI Chicago, The Kennedy Forum, Thresholds, Mount Sinai Health System and University of Illinois at Chicago. The Steering Committee continues to meet monthly to address its goals of improving training, increasing access to social services, reducing the stigma of mental health, educating the public on mental health first response, and collecting better data on outcomes. Partners in the Greater Roseland Project include: Alderman Austin, Alderman Beale, Alderman Sadlowski-Garza, Camelot Excel Academies, Catholic Charities, Chicago Beyond, Chicago Department of Public Health, Chicago Park District, Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Police Department, Far South Side Community Action Council, Greater Roseland Chamber of Commerce.

Politics Toni Preckwinkle: Future Plans For Cook County By Katara Patton Defender Senior Editor Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle recently stopped by the Defender as a part of a tour with local press. She shared her forecast on the preliminary budget, future plans for development and her focus for the county. With the release of the county’s preliminary budget forecast, Preckwinkle said there is an $82 million dollar gap, which is actually the smallest gap in recent history. The county has closed that gap through lay offs and vacant positions. But Preckwinkle cautions, “The easy things have been done over the last 7 years; it will get harder to close the gap because the obvious things have already been done. Deeper cuts will be difficult….The workforce is 13 percent smaller than it was when I came in…it will be harder to make cuts without impacting services.” The county has made “structural changes” such as eliminating vacant positions and reorganizing. And the rescinding of the highly debated tax on sweetened beverages earlier this fiscal year hurt the budget. “It left a hole in our budget for subsequent years…it was revenue we anticipated.” This hole also impacts bond ratings and the interest rates on loans. One of the new projects Preckwinkle mentioned was the development of the old Cook County Hospital building that has been idle since 2002. Now, a deal has been made with a group of developers who will create a short- and longterm hotel on the grounds that will also provide office space. The land will be leased to the developers in
a long-term lease. The county is also creating an ambulatory care center, which will open in the fall. It is south and west of Stroger Hospital and will be connected through walkways. It will replace the Fauntus Clinic, which is in a space that hasn’t been kept up and wasn’t converted well, according to Preckwinkle. She says she’s addressed two of her major areas of concern when she took office; one was public health. “330,000 people have health insurance who didn’t have it before,” thanks to the Affordable Care Act and the fact that Illinois chose to adopt the plan. Preckwinkle reiterated that there are “whole sectors of [people in jobs] where you can work 40 hours and not get health insurance…with Medicaid expansion, people who make minimum wage or less can get health insurance….one of my goals was to ensure sustainability of health.” The other goal centered around public safety. With criminal justice reform, fewer people charged with non-violent crimes are awaiting trial behind bars. More people are released on recognizance when they are not deemed a threat to society. The former laws were “unfair to the poor,” according to Preckwinkle and disproportionately impacted Black and Brown citizens. One of the main issues Preckwinkle will focus on in her third term as board president (she is unopposed in the November run off) is development of the South Toni Preckwinkle Suburban community. “We are getting the actors together to build capacity and op- figure out where we need to go,” es in the South Suburbs of Cook work with them to build up the reportunity…gather information, she shared with the Defender. JB Pritzker THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
In the first poll released after new petition filings, Democrat JB Pritzker leads incumbent Republican Governor Bruce Rauner by 15 percent in a four way race including Conservative Party candidate Sam McCann and Libertarian Kash Jackson. The poll of 1208 likely Illinois general election voters was conducted June 26-28, 2018. The margin of error is 2.8 percent. The poll was conducted by live callers and answered on both land lines (631) and cell phones (577). Since 2001, Victory Research
has conducted a semi-monthly statewide poll called The Illinois Poll. Victory Research does not have a client in the Illinois Governor’s race. Victory Research’s website is www.illinoispoliticsblog. com. Rauner, already the underdog in every published poll since the primary, is hurt more by the presence of the two new candidates than is Pritzker, according to the poll. Combined, McCann and Jackson are supported by 17.6% of Republican voters, while only 1.2% of Democratic voters chose the two www.chicagodefender.com
new candidates. In addition, McCann and Jackson take significant support from Rauner in Central and Southern Illinois, according to the poll. In the four way race, Pritzker is ahead or tied in every geographic region of the state except the collar counties, where Rauner holds a slight lead (41.9%-38.3%), and Southern Illinois, where Rauner leads by 0.8% (32.8%-32.0%). McCann’s support hits double digits in Central Illinois, where he is from (11.6%), and in southern Illinois (10.2%).

Support Group For Men: Talk It Out By Rick and Brenda McCain Let’s Play
It is said that men are imprisoned in an outdated, suffocating cycle of “masculinity” where their manhood is continuously challenged. There are preconceived notions of how a man should act, look and sound. There are also notions that Brenda and Rick men shouldn’t ever McCain show their emotions, which is an ever-ending dilemma. Strength, not vulnerability, measures manhood! “Men don’t cry,” and they definitely don’t talk about their personal feelings to anyone, especially in a support group. That would be a sign of femininity and weakness. Better to man up and shake off whatever is bothering you because looking for someone to support you is not masculine. Playwright Ellen Fairey, who began

writing “Support Group For Men,” almost eight years ago introduces us to this crisis where men feel isolated and lonely. In a world where everything has changed, we meet four friends who come together every Thursday in the Wrigleyville area to talk about the challenges they are facing in life. They have a strict policy: “No Ladies” allowed. However, an unexpected guest crashes their party and their beliefs as to what it means to be a man in today’s society get overturned with a new outlook regarding masculinity. The support group meets in an apartment above a bar on the corner of Clark and Roscoe Streets, near Wrigleyville and Boystown. These men share their issues without being judgmental and seek to form an unbreakable bond. Brian (Ryan

Kitley), a middle-aged man who works at an Apple store and is in a perfect relationship with a woman who is young enough to be considered his daughter, spearheads the group. He fears his relationship is too good to be true and his friends know it won’t last. Delano (Anthony Irons) is the only man in the group who is married and his wife is sick and tells him to have an affair so he can satisfy his needs. He is also Brian’s longtime Black friend. There is also Roger (Keith Kupferer), who cleans the Cloud Gate, the Chicago sculpture by Indian-born British artist Sir Anish Kapoor, famously known as The Bean in Millennium Park. Roger has never been married, which is not by his choice. Kupferer was brilliant in this role. Completing the group is Kevin (Tommy Rivera), a tech guy who also loves teaching salsa dancing. He reveals a secret to the men that stunned them and none of them can fully understand. The group has this bizarre ritual where they use Native American names, which in today’s world could be construed as being insensitive, and use a sacred baseball bat as the means of communicating. To speak, each man must request the bat, and after they finish speaking, they proceed to do a pow-wow chant. They talk about different subjects ranging from gender, the #MeToo Movement, racism and police violence. There is a window nearby, and the men hear a commotion and see a woman being beaten; so they run out to help her. To their surprise, Alex, a cross-dressing man appears in Brian’s apartment; this brings up a conversation about what it truly means to be a man and what is consid-

ered a man. Alex too is experiencing the need of support and the men reluctantly allow him to share his issues. Then the support group, being enlightened by Alex, seeks to include him. To celebrate, Brian shares a little herb and the support group turns into a wild party. Two other actors, Sadieh Rifai (Officer Caruso) and Eric Slater as Officer Nowak, complete the cast. The entire cast works well together, and the stage setup was excellent and helps realistically bring the audience into the play. “Support Group For Men” is a play that seeks to deconstruct male insecurities, especially about sex and gender; it’s a clever idea and opens the door to a deeper understanding of the changing world we live in today. Having an all-male cast that discusses the issues of being a man from a woman’s perspective seem to be an oxymoron; however, Fairey who is a seasoned pro, does a good job pulling it off; balancing the problematic task of straight and gender pronouns. “Support Group For Men” is a funny and realistic story about men needing support and how they view life as a man in today’s society. Let’s Play recommends seeing this Goodman Theatre play. The cast includes: Tommy Rivera-Vega (Kevin) Ryan Kitley (Brian) Keith Kupferer (Roger) Anthony Irons (Delano) Sadieh Rifai (Officer Caruso) Eric Slater (Officer Nowak) THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

After the tour, Prince asked Hayes to join the New Power Generation officially. Jones and Hayes conveyed to the kids that Prince was a bluesman; that was always his base and the blues genre was very important to him. Hayes stated “I remember Prince listening to [blues musician Robert Johnson] and we were working on a record that had that Johnson’s vibe and tone to it. We used to do a thing called the “After Show” where we would find a club [Park West, Metro] after the show and jam with musicians. Prince would play the blues, and that was just a prominent thing he just did. Parents, family, and friends were there to support and encourage all the kids as they took the stage at Reggie’s Rock Club on State Street. Guardians even had their time that night to share the stage as they performed a medley of blues songs such as “Downhome Blues” by blues singer ZZ Hill. Laneen Blount [Southside of Chicago] parent of a teen participant, stated, “I enrolled my son in the blues camp because it was something new; he’s a musician. I like it a lot, it’s very different, and it keeps him busy. Levern Danly, 15, from Wheaton, Ill, stated: “3 years ago my dad heard about it because of his fraternity [Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc. www.chicagodefender.com
Fernando Jones and Morris Hayes Jones is also a member] so he heard about it; I like playing, I love all kinds of music.” Seventeen-year-old Ben Olmos from Orange County, Calif., came to Chicago for the camp plus he enjoys the city. “I love playing music. It’s like my ‘jam’ no pun intended, (laughs) and I play electric guitar and drums. I love Chicago… if I had the money, I would live here; the camp is fun, the teachers are nice.” Jones is an internationally known American Bluesman, educator and songwriter from the South Side of Chicago. Jones has performed his compositions from basement parties to nightclubs in Havana, Cuba. Inspired by his older brothers, Jones taught himself how to play guitar when he was just four years old and has been playing ever since. Jones is on the faculty in the Music Department at Columbia College Chicago as the founding director of the Blues Ensemble
and Blues Camp for student musicians ages 12 to 18. Jones has been recognized and celebrated by his peers and the press as being on the “cutting edge” of the Blues. He adds new blood and a fresh perspective to its legacy musically and culturally. As a composer, he has taken great pride in performing his original works publicly to help ensure the evolutionary development of this genre. “I had a lot of fun and success in my life through my band, and I would like for them [the Blues Kids] to keep practicing; some of them end up forming bands with each other through the camp.” To audition for next year’s Blues Kids Camp, visit: blueskids.com/ earlybird. Pfleger Gets Our Attention By Carl West 12 Voices Now that Father Mike Pfleger has awakened some sleeping giants in the form of excited protesters, the City of Chicago and even some elected officials have been moved by this over the top call to Carl West action; now that the hidden hands of power know that the leader of St. Sabina Church has the juice to stop traffic in its tracks, they’re secretly wondering what’s next. To everyone who either joined the highway shut down, screamed from overpasses, watched the news coverage from afar, prayed for the protestors’ safety from local churches--and especially the mayor, the governor and city council members--notwithstanding the haters who criticized the mission from the beginning, I ask the one major question and that is, “what
This struggle for freedom, equality, liberty, and justice will require for not just one common man to stop traffic, it will need for a host of Avengers to stand up to fight wherever injustice, bigotry, and hatred shows its wicked and destructive presence. are each of you gonna do now that the traffic has resumed speeding down the Dan Ryan”? Over the last few days, I’ve witnessed smart people spending countless and useless hours smacking about the shutdown on social media as though this drastic move was gonna solve our many concerns. People, this was meant to get our attention. And it did! But unfortunately, folks are acting as though this South Side pastor is the lone Avenger who will either heal the weak, cure the sick and shut-in, or better yet, he has played us like puppets. Remember the blockbuster movie the Avengers, which consisted of dozens of heroes? And if you know anything about cape crusaders, most times there’s more than one. A single super-hero (Pfleger)
cannot defeat the many enemies that plague cities or states like Chicago and Illinois. He needs for everyone with super-powers, intellectual capital, money, resources and pure unadulterated hustle to suit up! And if the reality show type Negroes would stop spending all day commenting on Facebook and Twitter and pull out their Iron Man or Wonder Woman costumes from the attic and hit the streets, we could win and win BIG! Because we need Chicagoans who have skin in this game of survival to either bust through corporate gates, kick-in drug dealers’ doors, stand outside the mayor’s and governor’s home, as well as vote out of office elected officials who have not joined forces with the hood Avengers fighting corruption.
Everyone has to play his or her part. This struggle for freedom, equality, liberty, and justice will require for not just one common man to stop traffic, it will need for a host of Avengers to stand up to fight wherever injustice, bigotry, and hatred shows its wicked and destructive presence. Father Pfleger shut down the Dan Ryan last Saturday. This Saturday, another group should have planned to shut down Lake Shore Drive. Then the Saturday after that, another group should be planning to halt traffic on the Edens, followed by stoppage on the Ike, concluding with shutdowns of I-57, I-90, and every other main passageway where disruption can send a strong message that “enough is enough!” If you social media experts
were to stop cat-chatting for a moment and start executing strategies to repost, we might continue the initial push by Pfleger to get more of their attention. And this way, Father Mike could not be seen as the “go to” person in the community, as I’ve heard people claim. That premise would not exist because there would be many “go to” people who also stopped the flow of traffic, shut down malls, and closed unwanted groceries stores in our community, etc. Again, in the fight for freedom, everyone has to do their part. You cannot make change without getting your hands dirty. And if that requires certain casualties of war, then so be it. I got my parts handled. But the one that’s ultimately important is to script (our) narrative as we plan master strategies to transform the communities where we live, work and play. What’s your part? Whose attention you gonna get? Carl D. West is the CEO/Publisher of TBTNews and founder of the TRUTH 4 Literacy Foundation, Leadership Luncheon, Legend and Pioneer Awards, all powered by Midwest Gap Enterprise.

he views himself. As my husband stated in Black Boy Bias Part I, our son was indeed complaining out loud and showing his distaste of activities through his body language. This read as disrespect to the teacher and rightfully so. This behavior wouldn’t fly in our presence either. I’ve seen similar behavior in his non-Black counterparts at school. Even in the discussion with his teacher, we discovered that in one instance she wasn’t sure if our son was even the culprit because he was around a group of students who were being disrespectful. But she singled him out. I can’t help but think that part of the reason she singled him out is because he is the only Black person in his class. In the teacher conference, we were open and honest about our discussions with our son regarding his behavior AND regarding prejudice. It’s important for Black parents to have “the talk” with our kids, but we also need to have it www.chicagodefender.com
with the parts of our village that don’t look like us. When we explained to her that this could be a situation of unconscious bias, she understood our position. Then she shared her experience upon entering this school district and how she was disturbed by the lack of diversity in the student body compared to her previous school. I appreciated the fact that she showed her color-awareness instead of preaching about her color-blindness. I need our village to be aware and not blind to what our Black children will face in this world. My concerns of labeling were addressed in the meeting. The teachers think highly of him and enjoy having him in class. There was nothing in his report card about any behavioral issues. His final grades were exceptional. I’m satisfied with the outcome and I’m glad we addressed the topic of unconscious bias with his teacher. It’s important to discuss our own experiences with bias and
not allow those feelings to fester in darkness. The village becomes that much stronger when the truth of our experiences and feelings are brought into the light. “If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” - 1 John 1:6-7 Reggie and Quiana Kee have known each other for over 20 years and were married in 2004. They were licensed to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ in 2015 at the Kingdom Advancement Center in Elgin, Ill., where they currently reside. The Legacy of Welton Walter Barclay Welton Walter Barclay, 72, of Loves park, passed away June 18, 2018. He was the long-awaited son born to the union of the late Bishop Fitz-Hubert Everson Barclay, Sr. and Geraldine Williams Barclay following the birth of three sisters. Born on June 8, 1946, Welton was the last of four siblings born in the Republic of Panama before the family completed its migration to the United States in 1949. Affectionately known as “Clay,” Welton was proud of his rich international family heritage and frequently traveled abroad to maintain family connections in Panama, Costa Rica, Jamaica, and Sweden. His maternal grandparents, Benjamin Williams and Georgina Hines Williams, were born on the west coast of the island of Jamaica in Little London, Westmoreland Parish. On the paternal side, Welton’s grandparents, the late Reverend Walter Elias Barclay and Marie Louise Cowell Barclay originated from the east coast of Jamaica in St. Thomas Parish. In 1913, his grandparents migrated to Panama where both of his grandfathers worked in constructing of the Panama Canal, one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. Many family members still reside in Panama. Other family members of this generation migrated to Costa Rica to participate in the Costa Rican railroad development. Welton made numerous trips to visit family members abroad and much like the model of his parents, he was generous and committed to investing in the younger generation of his birthplace. He was deeply grateful for the range of opportunities his family enjoyed in the United States and frequently expressed his gratitude. “We are a blessed family and the beneficiaries of opportunities made possible through the favor of God. Therefore, to much is given, much is required.” Ironically, Welton and his wife, Rolene, along with several other family members, had already purchased tickets for an August trip to Panama and Costa Rica for the annual celebration of West Indian contributions to development in Central American. Welton accepted the Lord at an early age while attending Calvary Bible Church on Chicago’s west-side. He confirmed his faith in Christ before departure from this life and affirmed that he was prepared to meet his parents, sister, Vranda, granddaughter, Cie DS Ortiz and a host of other family members who preceded him in heaven. Beginning at a very early age and throughout his life, Welton was wellknown for his commitment to serving the sick, shut-in, and community youth needing support and guidance. He frequently visited homes, hospitals and nursing facilities to bring comfort, joy, gifts and support. A quiet disciple, he was a living example of commitment to those in need and a wonderful model of Christian service in daily practice who always focused on the positive qualities of individuals. Welton grew up in Chicago and attended Carter and Betsy Ross Elementary Schools before graduating from Englewood High School in 1965. In high school, he played football and sang in the choir. Following high school, Welton enrolled in Wilson Jr. College and worked a variety of jobs to support his educational pursuits in the trade industry. He was a master of many trades, but most proud of his achievement as a Journeyman Pipefitter. Welton worked for GMAC for thirty-nine years and served on the executive board of the local union. After moving up the ranks as journeyman for the company, he retired January 1, 2007. Welton and Rolene met through a mutual friend and were joined in holy matrimony on May 29, 1982. They shared a rich life together growing as a couple and enjoyed traveling, learning about different cultures, spending time with family, and mentoring and encouraging the younger generations. He loved fishing. He especially enjoyed fishing and sailing at his lake house in Cassopolis, Michigan with family and friends. Welton was a father to many children who embraced him as their own. He leaves to cherish and celebrate his life: a loving wife, Rolene Jemison Barclay, of 36 years; his children: Alastair M. Jemison, Vita Clarence Stokes, and Cynthia Bailey; grandchildren: Jalexis Evans-Jemison, Verynthia, Malcolm, and Vashon; and eight great-grandchildren; eleven siblings: Gina Barclay-McLaughlin (James) of Knoxville, TN. Herma Barclay Williams (Eric) of Silver Springs, MD. Celene Barclay Cole (Joseph) of Chicago, IL. Samuel Barclay, of Chicago, IL. FitzHubert Barclay, Jr., of Chicago, IL. Ernest Barclay (Delores) of Ormond Beach, FL. Dorothea Barclay Ridgeway of Waukegan, IL. Thomas (Yvette) of Chicago, IL. Lester Barclay (Sue) of Chicago, IL. Aaron Griffin of MI. and Lamont (Michelle) of Tampa, FL. and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Memorial Service: For Welton (Clay) Barclay will be held on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at 11:00 am at Allen Chapel AME Church 3000 Rural Street Rockford, IL 61107. Repast:Holiday Inn, Huffman House Banquet Hall inside hotel at State Street and Bell School Road Rockford, IL 1:30pm until 3:30pm.

The Bigs Throwback! A look back at Bears reaction to Trump’s SOB tweets Spirts by #TheBIGS As we prepare for Bears training camp this week and a new season is on the horizon, it’s only right we take a look back at a moment from last season that shook up the entire sports world. A issue that just won’t go away for the NFL and rightfully so given the fact that the climate has not changed since blackballed NFL’er Collin Kaepernick decided to kneel during the National Anthem to raise awareness of police brutality and racism in America. Let’s take a look back at how some of the Bears reacted to a tweet from “President” Trump that called them “sons of bitches” for supporting Kaepernick’s message. From Sept. 24 2017 “YALL’s president”, as CNN political commentator Angela Raye so eloquently called him yesterday on Twitter, stirred up a storm of backlash yesterday with his attempt to silence professional athletes by suggesting that owners fire players who have chosen to THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
protest the National Anthem. But here in Chicago, fans of a usually politically quiet Bears locker room were left wondering if the vibrations of counter actions against the president’s tweets would reach Soldier Field. I talked to Bears defensive tackle and newly-named team captain Akiem Hicks about his thoughts on the president’s tweets and what to expect from him and his fellow Bears teammates before kickoff of their game vs the Pittsburgh Steelers this afternoon. Bears team captain Akiem Hicks on his initial thoughts after reading the president’s tweets suggesting owners fire National Anthem protesters: “I think that it goes against a lot of the rights that we hold dear and the rights that we fight for as citizens in America. I don’t really appreciate it, but it’s where we’re at as a country right now, and it’s where our leadership is. I’m no activist and I’m not standing at the forefront of any movement, but I will say that you want to be

Alexander/The Bigs Visuals) respected and you want to be appreciated for what you do, and you want to be allowed the basic human rights that we all deserve.” Hicks on if we should expect a response from the team during the National Anthem at this afternoon’s game vs the Pittsburgh Steelers: “I think everybody should act accordingly and act how they feel they should act or do whatever they feel the need to do, but for www.chicagodefender.com
me I have a business meeting on Sunday, 12 noon.” Not much of anything has changed since this day. Kaepernick is still out of a job. The NFL is still fumbling the ball on just how to listen and understand players who support Kaepernick’s message in the NFL and Trump still lets his Twitter fingers fly like nobody’s business. This NFL season is sure to be just as much as a roller coaster ride as last year. Buckle your seatbelts.
Two seasons removed from winning their fitst World Series Championship since 1908, the Cubs once again find themselves in position for a magical season. Sitting pretty at the All-Star break, the Cubs are the nest team in the National League record wise and have fans screaming “let’s do it again!” With less than 70 games left, a 2.5 game lead in the NL Central, the Cubs are starting to tighten their grip on the NL central division and those 2016 vibes are getting more poignant by the second. But these guys are no stranger to big moments, they fought their way to consistency and seemed focused on the goal. Let’s take a look at how the first half of the season has been to the North Siders below: #ALJr- should’ve been an AllStar...great season so far. Gold glove status #JHey- this is the dude Theo was looking for when he signed the big deal #ELMago- the star of the squad and definitely in the running for NL MVP #BigFolks- shaky first half...rbi’s still there...never worried about him #KBTheNatural- hurt most of the 1st half, he will come up HUGE in the 2nd half #ILLWILL- came into his own... his first of many All-Star appearances #BamBam- he’s used the whole field well...not just a HR threat #Addie- low key, he’s had a really good first half at the plate #Happer- has cut down on the K’s...can play all over the field #TheVet- Zobrist has been healthy and clutch #3AM- best pinch hitter in the game Pitching- #TheAce Jon Lester is top notch...#PoetryInMotion Kyle Hendricks & #Q Jose Quintana will step up big in the 2nd half... Chatwood & #YU have been extra suspect..#IceMIKE Montgomery is always reliable. The bullpen has been lights out with a lot of guys rotating in and out. DON’T QUESTION JOE MADDON... Outlook- There’s lots of baseball left and most of it at Wrigley! Enjoy the ride...EVERYBODY IN! It’s a longgg season July 18 - 24, 2018 19
