Chance the Rapper Becomes a Publisher With the release of one of his latest songs “I Might Need Security,” Chicago rapper Chance announced that he had purchased Chicagoist. The lyrics say “I bought the Chicagoist/just to run you racist [expletive] out of business.”

In a statement, the rapper said he was excited to continue the work of the Chicago media platform.

He said he would relaunch the site to bring “an independent media outlet focused on amplifying diverse voices and content.”

Chicagoist was a news website that was once owned by DNAinfo; the site ceased publishing new stories in November 2017; owner Joe Ricketts shut it down after workers voted to unionize.

Chance, who recently proposed to his girlfriend and mother of his child, Kirsten Corley, called out several Chicago media outlets in his song, recalling negative stories that have been reported on him.

The Defender was not on the list.

How To Deal with PTSD

By Deborah Bayliss Defender Contributing Writer In last week’s Defender, we looked at the impact Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) may have on Blacks, particularly because of the increase of violence and racism. In today’s edition, we look at some of the things people can do to cope with PTSD and live healthy lives.

What is PTSD? PTSD is a psychiatric disorder that can occur in individuals who experience or witness a traumatic event such as a terrorist act, war/ combat, sexual assault or other violent personal assault, according to The American Psychiatric Association.

Individuals with PTSD continue to have intense, disturbing thoughts and feelings related to their experience that last long after the traumatic event has ended.

Those with the disorder may also relive the event through flashbacks and/or nightmares and can experience a range of emotions from sadness, fear, anger, to detachment from other people. They may be easily startled and have strong negative reactions to loud noises or an accidental touch.

Following another weekend of Chicago gun violence where according to WGNTV.com, 33 were wounded and 6 killed, it seems that PTSD is a given in a city like Chicago with such high levels of crime and violence and high-profile police-involved shootings. Professor Jules Harrell of Howard University response said, “I would expect PTSD would rage like an epidemic where a threat of homicide hangs over the heads of the residents of any neighborhood.”

Adding to the trauma of being trapped in a cycle of violence that includes police involved shootings of African-American males, Harrell, who conducts research on the impact of racism on African-Americans, referenced a study that shows African-Americans suffer clear, negative mental health effects when they live in and around cities where Black men have been killed by police.

“Those of us who study racism learn two things quickly, one is racism brings a range of stressful encounters to the lives of Black people and two, racism has an uncanny permanence across time and place,” Professor Harrell exTHE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Jules Harrell plained. “We know that human memory makes a rich, multilayered record of the stress we encounter.

These memories have conscious and unconscious facets. Thus, one may have a single encounter with a toxic racist situation, but the psychological or physiological impact of that encounter may last for a lifetime. The concern of PTSD by those who study racism seems inevitable. It is for me. My studies have been on the effects of racist encounters and the recall of these events.”

Professor Harrell’s studies stress that when people view or recall episodes of racism, distinct changes in physiological activity are evident.

“These (changes) differ across people, with more pronounced changes sometimes taking place in individuals who embrace the Western values like materialism and individualism,” he explained.

“The studies have been replicated in a number of laboratories across the country.”

As for the impact of racism and the continued cycle of crime on children, Professor Harrell said to keep in mind that racism has interpersonal, institutional, and structural elements.

“These lead to conditions (such as lack of jobs, nurturing experiences, and educational opportunities) where crime is a common if not an acceptable way of life,” Harrell said. “The old saying is

true, ‘people in Black communities are often over-policed but poorly protected.’

“The sad irony is that often we celebrate the criminal individuals who might prosper materially under these conditions. This is similar to the situation during the enslavement period, where some criminal individuals chose to collude with rather than fight European invaders. We have to remember and tell the children that we are not natural born criminals nor were we natural born colluders. However, crime and collusion stemmed from conditions in our history and from present conditions.”

Treatment for PTSD Danielle Buhuro, a local pastor and clinical pastoral education professional who trains chaplains, has done extensive work around helping Black people cope. She said she tells people who have experienced trauma that they need to do three things.

First, they need a psychological therapist, “not a pastor or a chaplain,” she explained. People need trained professional help. To find professional help, she encourages those with PTSD to visit phsychologytoday.com and use the search engine to find a doctor near them by zip code as well as by type of insurance they have. (Many insurance plans cover therapy.)

She also encourages individuals to participate in self-care activities, particularly mindfulness, www.chicagodefender.com

Danielle Buhuro which focuses on the current moment while acknowledging feelings. Another form of self-care is being selective with the social media consumed. While social media has been great in helping us uncover racist and unjust practices, like police shootings, Buhuro said it can be harmful to watch these videos over and over. “If you see a negative police brutality event, or another one around racism, etc., you can have a depressed mood when you start the day. You don’t want to start your day [that way.]”

Lastly, she also suggests people get involved civically with social service agencies that can help them fight racism. “Take that anger and channel it for something positive; be in contact with political officials, aldermen, house of representatives….we need to do more than just shut down the Dan Ryan; we need to figure out how to go to Springfield and D.C. and impact policy changes.”

Buhouro, whose book Spiritual Care In an Age of #BlackLives Matter: Examining the Spiritual and Prophetic Needs of African Americans In a Violent America comes out this fall, has established a website where people can get practical information to cope. The site is blackcarematters.com.

Self-care is at the center of coping with trauma. Tennille Power recently became certified as a yoga instructor and uses a specific trauma informed technique. She

helps people become more cognizant about what they are doing to their bodies while experiencing trauma.

“One of the things African Americans must be cognizant of is what we put into our bodies. Physically, many of us are emotional eaters. We have trained our bodies to crave caffeine, fried foods and sweets to self soothe. We must recognize our relationship with food in order to make healthier choices. Two, we must be aware of what we watch on television, the radio, the internet and social media. There are too many negative stereotypes and narratives around our people. From “Reality TV” to the Gram [Instagram], we are bombarded constantly with another medium telling us how to think, dress, interface with others, be in relationship with partners and raise children. More often than not these images continue to perpetuate negative stereotypes of the angry Black woman/man, the overly specialized Black woman/ man, the Jezebel…Aunt Jemima. …

We need to question everything we see, we eat, we hear, we touch through the lens of ‘Is this moving me toward my mission in life?’

Power continued, “Living in America is traumatic for African Americans on a daily basis. Having to watch violence inflicted upon us by police, medical institutions, ed continued on page 4

ucational institutions etc. Over the course of the time our ancestors were kidnapped and brought to this country, a country stolen from indigenous people, we are in constant trauma and vicarious trauma. African Americans MUST embrace mental health and selfcare. We must remove the stigma behind mental health and get therapy. Your pastor may not be qualified, unless she or he has gone through professional mental health training. Self-care is seen as a luxury. It is a NECESSITY and looks different for everybody. My idea of self-care is NOT going to the spa and I can’t always get away on vacation. For me, it’s reading, being still, praying in a quiet chapel. For some it’s walking. For some it’s getting together with girlfriends.

For others it can be binge watching Netflix and for others it’s yoga!”

Professor Harrell stated that we have to operate on all levels, from the biological and psychological to the economic and political to tackle this monumental issue.

“Everyone is responsible for change,” he added. “As individuals, we have to correct our own behavior and that of our children.

Dr. Jeffrey Shipko, a former teacher, coach, and public school administrator, is doing what Harrell has suggested—getting involved with addressing the PTSD issue.

Shipko, who has a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, is a board member of Lost Boyz Inc., a South Shore youth organization that provides tutoring, mentoring, anger management, community service, and entrepreneurship activities for high risk, low-income and incarcerated youth who often have been abused.

After seeing signs of emotional distress and general unhappiness in the young Black males in the Lost Boyz program, Dr. Shipko decided to raise awareness and share with the coaches that the Lost Boyz program is about more than sports and other activities and has to include the social and emotional wellbeing of the youth.

Though retired from practicing,

Dr. Shipko said he is still interested in the social and emotional development of boys and girls.

“I’m still hopeful, but much sadder these days about the police shootings of African-American males and all the racism and that after all these years later, we’re still fighting the same things,” said Dr. Shipko.

More Help Dr. Shipko will host a program from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 14 at the DuSable Museum of African-American History, 740 E. 56th St., to help raise awareness about PTSD and other mental illnesses and emotional distress. This program will also address the reasons African-Americans in general do not seek mental health services.

Dr. Shipko reached out to Dr. Darnell Lamont Walker. During the program in September, Dr. Walker, who currently resides in South Africa, will share his 80-minute documentary “Outside the House,” a series of interviews www.chicagodefender.com

with African-Americans from Richmond, Virginia, who were interviewed when Dr. Walker toured the area with two other therapists.

They found individuals suffering from depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, trauma, rape, physical abuse, alcoholism, anxiety, and suicidal ideation without ever asking for help.

“The two therapists shared with me that it’s never been a time since African-Americans have been in the U.S. that we weren’t traumatized,” Dr. Walker said Monday. “We’ve been traumatized the entire time we’ve been in this country. African-Americans who see combat in the military are traumatized both from military combat and for just being Black in America.”

Dr. Walker said the stigma of seeking help for mental illness stems from growing up in African-American households and being told not to share what goes on in the household with anybody.

“People also sometimes feel

Dr. Walker, a young African-American male treated for mental illness, sought psychiatric help for major depression, took medication, and attended weekly psychotherapy sessions.

His documentary addresses the fear, shame, racism and stigma of mental illness in the Black community and the shame and humiliation that too often African-American women experience for reporting sexual or physical abuse.

Gubernatorial Candidate JB Pritzker Meets With Moms Impacted

By Violence Last week, Illinois Gubernatorial Candidate JB Pritzker met with mothers, grandparents and others who have lost sons or other loved ones to gun violence in the City and surrounding areas. The private meeting was held on the outside patio at Sip and Savor in Bronzeville.

Sitting in a round table position, the attendees gave their names and the name of the person killed; several had sons killed by Chicago Police. The women shared the struggles they have endured since their loved ones were killed. One

shared how she works 2 jobs to take care of her child, who was left fatherless 5 years ago.

Others called for more transparency in shootings and told the candidate that he needed to be on the streets with them when they were protesting.

Black Fire Brigade To Mentor Youth, Prepare Future Firefighters Chicago Fire Department Lieutenant Quentin Curtis, the founder and president of the Black Fire Brigade, says the Brigade is still accepting sponsors help to raise money to train and mentor Black youth about careers in firefighting.

“It’s time to increase the number of Black firefighters,” Curtis told the Defender. He says this is the reason the brigade purchased a clubhouse in Ashburn. Youth need to be exposed to Black firefigthers.

“You see the fire trucks and you don’t see us,” he said.

At the clubhouse, the Black Fire Brigade will train youth and get them ready to take the firefighters exam. Anyone 18 and older who has a high school diploma or GED THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

As part of the training Curtis and the brigade provides, youth are prepared to be EMTs (emergency medical technicians) and to take the written exam and the physical exam to join the fire department. In essence, they help

them get ready to succeed and become firefighters.

In addition to serving as a clubhouse to train youth, the building on 84th and Kedzie also serves as a place to remember fallen firefighters. A memorial wall lists the names and showcases the badges of Black firefighters who have died in the line of duty.

The clubhouse, which was once the Gaelic Fire Brigade and owned by an Irish firefighters group, will also serve as a space for firefighters to fellowship, especially since many Black firefighters have experienced discrimination, which has caused the city millions of dollars in settlements.

At the vigil, he tells the crowd that he and his attorney have filed a lawsuit to sue the Chicago Police Department for all audio and video footage showing Augustus’ death. He believes the lone viral video released by CPD only shows a perspective that’s beneficial to the officers involved, not Augustus.

“We don’t want to wait 60 days. We need all video and audio released immediately,” cries Calloway. “You had no constitutional grounds [for] stopping that man.

Calloway continued by linking Augustus’ death to a systemic problem with police and Laquan McDonald. Jason Van Dyke, the police officer who killed McDonald, just recently received a trial date for September 5. Calloway believes if Van Dyke is found not guilty, the city’s Black population should have an uprising.

“If Jason Van Dyke walks for what he did to Laquan McDonald, each and every one of us need to rise up and shut this City down.

Nothing should move,” demands Calloway.

Last to speak at the Vigil was Dionell “Rev’d The Barber” Hill, friend, and coworker of Harith Augustus. Dressed in a custom-made shirt with “Snoop Tha Barber” emblazoned on his sleeve, the soft-spoken Rev’d wanted to call attention again to self-accountability and peace. He mentions Augustus as a God-fearing man who would have wanted solutions www.chicagodefender.com

“I’m a man of God,” says “Rev’d”. “I know this is something that God wanted. I brought this together for solutions of love. Most of all, we have to have the solution to forgive. We have a right to be angry but God is in control.”

After the vigil concluded, that anger intensified.

Community activist Jedidiah Brown led a small group to 71st and Jeffrey for a brief civil disobedience. To the police’s dismay, the group used their bodies to barricade oncoming traffic near the Metra line. “Justice for Snoop” chants rang out as police proceeded to brandish wooden clubs. The police slowly moved the community group to the sidewalk after several heated verbal exchanges.

“Why can’t we have a peaceful protest without the police stopping us,” one man constantly yelled to a white-shirt officer.

Protests for Harith Augustus are beginning to sunset, but recently Augustus’ family broke silence with a public statement in response to the tragic events.

“We acknowledge the emotions felt and expressed by so many in our community who witnessed the last seconds of his life, that have also been displayed before the world, via police bodycam footage,” says the statement.

“We have heard the voices of many who have shared heartfelt and timely concerns in the form of protest, memorials and requests for accountability and full transparency. We are grateful for the support you continue to show as we grieve the loss of our son and brother, Harith Liu Augustus.”

No further details have been given on COPA’s investigation on Augustus’ death, but a community remains struggling to locate solutions and find answers.

Community Chicagoan Dorothy Jean Tillman Graduates From College at 12 Twelve-Year-Old Dorothy Jean Tillman has been making her rounds in Chicago media lately. The young prodigy recently received her undergraduate degree—yes, at 12 years old.

Named after her legendary grandmother—former longtime Chicago alderwoman Dorothy Tillman, the young graduate says she is proud to be named after her.

“It makes me feel special,” she told the Defender. “Dorothy is a family name and I feel like I’m in a social club.”

Dorothy, also called DJ, received her bachelor of Science from Excelsior (she was a Liberal arts and Science major); in 2016, she received her associates degree. She has taken classes online and in the classroom and even tested out of several classes. She said, “My experience was highly engaged with learners around the world.”

Learning is important to Dor-

othy; she hopes to make learning fun for others. She plans to host learning activities and design activity books for early learners. “I hope to make Chicago a place where fun and learning go hand in hand; not everyone wants to go at an accelerated pace, but learning should not be punishment.”

Most immediately, she plans to have a gap year, where she will travel, create art and participate in community service projects.

DJ’s mother, Jimalita Tillman, said she knew her daughter was gifted from an early age. The young girl would “get messy…and explore in the park. She would study or stare at things as if she were dissecting them. …she read street signs based on phonetics and used sight words to create sentences. I fostered her gift by encouraging her to participate in things she loved. I enrolled her in tons of programs to drive her curiosity. City’s Early Education Program Helps Fund New Building for Center

By Deborah Bayliss Defender/Contributing Writer Englewood parents may be happy to hear a new early childhood education site is planned for the community.

Little Angels Learning Center, which currently operates out of a shared space in Alpha Temple Church, 6701 S. Emerald, will build a new center on lots purchased through the Department of Planning and Development Large Lots program and will serve some of Chicago’s youngest and most vulnerable children.

Center owner Nashone Greer-Adams purchased two lots at 6704-6710 S. Emerald Ave. for $1 each. She is also getting financial support from the City by way of $1.4 million in capital support as part of the city’s early education programming effort.

Funding for early education centers such as Little Angels are an initial step toward universal, full-day pre-kindergarten for all 4-year-olds, according to a press release from the City.

“Early education is a necessity for every child, not a luxury for some children,” Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a press release. “In Chicago, we are proud to build out more early education sites alongside community-based organizations across the City, to provide every student with the high-quality, early education that they deserve as we begin to phase

in free pre-kindergarten for all 4-year-olds.”

Chicago Ald. Roderick Sawyer (6th Ward) joined the mayor along with the Department of Family and Support Services and Chicago Public Schools last week to announce expansion of the Little Angels Learning Center in Englewood.

“Little Angels will help prepare students in Englewood with a quality education that provides the foundation for a successful academic career,” Sawyer said. “I am proud to work with Mayor Emanuel to support this much needed investment to the Englewood community and ensure our children are prepared for a successful future.”

“The community-based organizations we work with have historically played a pivotal role in delivering high-quality early learning opportunities in Chicago and we look forward to our continued partnership with them in the future,” said Department of Family and Support Services Commissioner Lisa Morrison Butler.

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) CEO Dr. Janice K. Jackson said, “High quality early education programs help to level the playing field, further narrow the achievement gap and lay the foundation for a successful future. “The investment at Little Angels and in early education across the City will ensure that every child in Chicago, regardless of their family’s resources, gets the great start they all deserve.”

To help ensure greater capacity going forward, capital funding for the new early learning centers is included in the proposed CPS FY19 capital plan. CPS recently proposed a nearly $1 billion in capital plan —the district’s largest single-year capital investment in more than two decades — to

promote equitable access to high quality resources by investing in educational programming, overcrowding relief, facility maintenance, athletic spaces, and IT and security upgrades.

As the first step in Emanuel’s plan to establish free Pre-K for all 4-year-olds by 2021, CPS is expanding full-day Pre-K next year to accommodate an additional 3,700 students.

Under this plan, an additional 180 full-day CPS classrooms will be added for this fall and will serve the families most in need. Across CPS and Chicago’s community-based partners, roughly 15,000 of the City’s 4-year-olds will have access to full-day pre-K programming.

In the first year, expanded programming will focus on families of four who make less than $46,435 per year.

Families can apply for preschool programs through the universal online application. The online site provides a single point of entry to access a menu of over 600 programs for three- and fouryear olds available under CPS, DFSS and city-administered community-based sites citywide.

12 Voices On the Front Porch: The Power Belongs to Us

But when you add to that a literate tongue or pen, you have something special.” Nelson Mandela I recently took a trip to Johannesburg, South Africa. Joburg is the continent’s biggest city and birthplace of the Zulu Nation and Apartheid. It was once home to Desmond Shanita Baraka Tutu and the Akintonde late, great leader, Nelson Mandela. This trip marked my first foray to the Motherland, a trip I’d dreamt of taking ever since I first viewed Roots television miniseries. Roots was my first indicator of the power of story, mainly when told from behind a lens. In my house, our window into the televised world of slavery was via a 25-inch color television that sat in our dining room. The week of Roots inaugural airing was a big deal in our house. We sat together every night, eyeballs glued to the tube. We were mesmerized by the levity of what our people had endured. Our TV appeared to share our grief, given that almost every time Massa cracked his whip, dark squiggly lines leapt on its screen, just like the ones embedded in Toby’s back. I was scared, confused and very intrigued. I wanted to gain a better understanding of my people —true Africans. Now, four decades later, my dream was about to come true.

I had been invited to present my scholarship on Black student success at a youth leadership conference at the University of Pretoria, just outside of Johannesburg.

Conference attendees were fellow scholars and educators, South African students, and international speakers. Students of mixed race and gender populated its campus space like seeds on top of a poppyseed muffin. From my hotel, I could see the Presidential house, the very location at which Nelson Mandela had been sworn into office two decades prior. The Presidential house lived up to its name or at least looked down on it.

The words “The Power Belongs to Us” are etched on both sides of the statue. As I read those words, my eyes scanned the crowds of people scattered in the vicinity of the statue’s gaze. Just opposite stood three to four different teen groups, who, from language and demeanor appeared to be South African.

Then there was me, a Black American, native Chicagoan, and a woman who had been mistaken more than once as a South African sister. I was continuously addressed by individuals who spoke Afrikaans, one of the countries native tongues. Each time I stopped to correct them, their response was a mixture of confusion, disgust, and amusement. “Oh! You are AhMARY-CON! A tongue click often followed this statement. I attribute this to two things: 1) My skin color and 2) The small number of Black tourists I observed while visiting Pretoria and Johannesburg.

Don’t misunderstand me.

There were swarms of tourists.

There just weren’t many BLACK

AMERICAN tourists. I have many theories regarding the shortage of Black Americans in South Africa. One of my dominant beliefs is that we don’t feel connected to the continent. If given a choice of global sites to visit, Black Americans tend to pick European locations, with France, Italy, and Greece topping the list. Admittedly, those are on my bucket list too, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to visit that part of the world. I can count on one hand and have four fingers left regarding other races and ethnic groups who decide to visit places OTHER than their native lands FIRST. However, we as Black Americans do that all the time.

So, we make no qualms about our lack of desire to visit Africa.

“You ain’t finding me in no AFFREE-KA!” is a refrain I’ve heard from peers on more than one occasion. However, why is that?

Why is so much shame attached to the continent? I realize there are a myriad reasons for this fear, and some of them are both unwww.chicagodefender.com

derstandable and valid.

However, my visit to Africa was about history. Keep in mind it has been less than 30 years since Apartheid was rampant on the continent and I saw several lingering signs during my visit, all of which made me very uncomfortable. I knew that I’d only be there a week before returning home to the United States--the great U.S. of A where the number of incarcerated Black men in the past decade SURPASS the numbers of Blacks exported from Africa during slavery in TOTALITY. This claim is highlighted

by Ohio State University professor and author Michelle Alexander, in her must-read book “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness.”

The need for solidarity amongst Black people across the various diaspora of the world is urgent.

These are dangerous times for Blacks, whether in South Africa or in South Shore on the South Side of Chicago. Also, just like South African Leaders Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu took to the

streets to fight Apartheid, so did our family friend and community activist, Rev. Dr. Michael Pfleger, when he SHUT DOWN the Dan Ryan Expressway to address a myriad of concerns within the Black community, including gun violence in Chicago.

Men like Fr. Mike embody, through word and deed, Mandela’s statement, “the power belongs to us.” As a Black writer, I too, understand how the power of stories about us, for us and as told by us, leaves an indelible mark in the sketchbook of history that can lead to historical change. The Christopher D. Redding Scholarship Luncheon was held this past week at The Clubhouse in Oak Brook, Ill. The Christopher D. Redding Youth Asthma Foundation was founded by Helen and Michael Redding Sr. in memory of their youngest son. Scholarships and educational grants totaling $9,000 were awarded. All of the recipients are graduating high school student athletes with a medically diagnosed case of asthma, play at least one sport, participate in documented community activities, and meet academic criteria. Since the official launch of the Christopher D. Redding Youth Asthma Foundation in 2015, more than $37,000 in scholarships and educational grants have been awarded to qualified graduating high school student athletes. Miss Lindsey is creating decadent The Black Foodies cakes, self-indulgent pies (sweet or savory) and cookies that would make Famous Amos jealous. However, what made us fall in love with Give Me Some Sugah are the Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner items on its menu. The small, storefront eatery is picturesque and reminiscent of a time when baby boomers were at the top of the food chain. Miss Lindsey’s offerings can warm your soul and bring a smile to your face.

Our culinary journey began with Give Me Some Sugah’s Quiche Special, comprised of a spinach quiche muffin, savory scones and turkey sausages made inhouse. This special is truly “special” – a homemade breakfast anyone can appreciate. Miss Lindsey’s spinach quiche muffin has no rival. It was absolutely spectacular.

The homemade crust was flaky and buttery, while the flavor of the spinach was mild – yet, tasty – with the perfect egg-tocheese ratio. The house-made turkey sausage was like Bob Evans down on the farm, with just enough spice to keep your taste buds engaged. The savory scones hit on all the right notes, as well. Bits of turkey sausage, chives and cheese are folded into the dough and baked to a scrumptious golden brown. The only downside to this super special is that it is only served on weekends . . . darn.

Up next was Give Me Some Sugah’s Chicken Pot Pie. This culinary delight wasn’t your customary pot pie. Instead of a traditional pie crust blanketing the pie, it was topped with a buttery, showstopper THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

biscuit. The pot pie filling was the epitome of comfort food. The broth had the consistency of a creamy, fresh, succulent gumbo roux and was filled with vegetables and ample amounts of skinless chicken chunks. The marriage of the biscuit and the pot pie filling was a match made in heaven. Miss Lindsey’s chicken pot pie definitely qualifies as one of The Black Foodies’ Best Tastee-Bites of 2018.

Now, on to some of the sweet ‘sin’sations we sampled at Give Me Some Sugah.

Let’s begin with Miss Lindsey’s signature Potato Chip Cookies. These cookies are the poster child for indulgence and, most importantly, super delish. Essentially, it’s a butter cookie with chopped pecans and crushed potato chips folded into the dough. We affectionately call them pecan sandies on steroids. No calorie counting allowed! Next time she prepares these buttery beauties, I’d like to be on “lick the bowl patrol.” The Lime Bars were as good as any key lime pie from Key West, while the gourmet Lemon Cookies had us wanting to camp out overnight to be at the head of the line for the first batch of the day.

Lenore Lindsey has mastered the art of baking sweet goodies and could easily be a pastry chef in a five-star hotel restaurant.

Her savory goodies make Give Me Some Sugah a double threat of sweet and savory.

Celie is transformed as she finds her self-worth. Sports This Week In Cubs Baseball Sports by #TheBIGS The All-Star break has come and gone and now all eyes are on just how special this Cubs season will be. The guys up North got back to action versus a rival and got set to take on one of the National League’s best squads. Check out how it all went down in “This Week In Cubs Baseball.”

Tommy Pham hit a solo HR onto Waveland Ave to make it 2-0 STL. Jason Heyward got the Cubs on the board in the bottom of 3rd with an rbi single that scored Vic Caratini.

Kolten Wong’s rbi single in the top of 5th scored Yadi Molina to make it 3-1 Cards.

The Cubs came back in the bottom of the 5th with a 5-piece spicy. Anthony Rizzo rbi double, a Heyward rbi single, a Zobrist sac fly and a 2-run bomb by Ian Happ put the Cubs on top 6-3.
