The 88th Annual Bud Billiken Parade Celebrates Generations By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer Revered for its history and celebrated for its tradition, organizers of the 88th Annual Bud Billiken Parade now seek to infuse energy into this year’s installment of the Chicago custom that ushers in the new school year. The Bud Billiken Parade has been recognized as the oldest, largest (and depending on who you ask) the best African-American parade in the nation. Affectionately called by some Chicagoans as “The Bud,” the parade has served as the unofficial culminating event of the summer. The timing of the parade each year (just before the start of the school year) perfectly coincides with the underlying mission supporting childhood education just as the event’s founder, Robert Sengstacke Abbott, intended. Since Abott founded the Bud Billiken Parade on August 11, 1929, the Bud is surpassed only by the Rose Parade celebrated in Pasadena, Calif, on New Year’s Day in terms of sheer size in the United States. Over the decades, Chicago Defender Charities, Inc., founded by John H.H. Sengstacke, has taken on the duties of producing the parade, which has witnessed notable individuals in attendance like (then) Senator Barack Obama, Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, among dozens of other stars. This year’s theme of “Honoring our Hometown Heroes” was selected by Chez Smith, parade coordinator, according to Myiti Sengstacke-Rice, president, Chicago Defender Charities. She shared with The Defender that the idea originated from the desire to celebrate those who have gone on to accomplish great feats from Chicago. Few exemplify the spirit of this year’s theme better than parade grand marshal, Chicago’s very own, Chance The Rapper. Sengstacke-Rice applauded the selection of the South Side MC calling him “an inspiration” to the younger generation. “This year we are so excited to have Chance the rapper as our Grand Marshall,” said Sengstacke-Rice. “Chance the Rapper was hands down the perfect choice for this year’s Grand Marshall because of his stance on education, his drive to celebrate the talent of the youth in our community, and we want to celebrate his amazing accomplishments this year. He represents the vision of our Bud Billiken Parade founder Robert Sengstacke Abbott who started the parade to celebrate our talented community children and promote education.” Chance’s efforts to change the lives of Chicago’s children through education have been nothing short of iconic. The 24-year-old donated his 2017 Grammy award for Best Rap Album for “Coloring Book” to the DuSable Museum of African

The South Shore Drill Team Returns This year Bud Billiken Parade staple participant The South Shore Drill Team returns to the festivities after a single year absence. The South Shore Drill Team, known for their grand show-stopping performances, bowed out of the proceedings last year after parade organizers opted to limit the number of participants in a move aimed to improve the flow and pace of the grand processional. However, in February, both sides came together to announce the return of the fan favorite. Prior to last year, the team had performed in the parade for 37 consecutive years. “I am happy that we were able to find a middle ground, our members were excited to know that they would be participating in this year’s parade,” said Arthur Robertson, founder and director of South Shore Drill Team. The South Shore Drill Team stated in a release that it intends to march with 150 participants including youth, parent volunteers, staff, and more. “I am so excited to be back at the Bud Billiken Parade this year; we do such much year round, but this is the one event we look forward to doing,” said Kira Ruthledge, a member of South Shore Drill Team. Bud Billiken Parade Scholarships, Community Service Honorees, and Royal Court Announced The Chicago Defender Charities announced 10 Bud Billiken Scholarship recipients and six community service award honorees at the recently held Chicago Defender Charities Annual Fundraiser & Scholarship Awards. According to Sengstacke-Rice, Chicago Defender Charities has awarded more than 300 scholarships totaling in $1.5 million thanks to the support of individual sponsors, corporations, and businesses. The Bud Billiken Parade is both the largest African-American parade in the country and one of the city of Chicago’s premier back-to-
school events. The theme for this year’s parade is “Honoring our Hometown Heroes.” The 2017 parade Grand Marshal is Chicago native and popular artist, Chance the Rapper, who stole the show at the Grammys when he won three awards. The Bud Billiken Parade has the distinction of being the second largest parade in the country with more than 1.5 million people in attendance. It is the oldest and largest African-American parade in the U.S. Recognized as a day of family fun and celebration that kicks off the return to class for Chicago school children, the parade has become an anticipated event in Chicago each August. Families and friends have participated, enjoyed and attended the Bud Billiken for generations. The Chicago Defender Charities produces the Bud Billiken Parade; ABC 7 is a sponsor and produces the parade broadcast. From there, it continues south on King Drive to 51st Street. It continues on Ellsworth Drive (in Washington Park) from 51st Street to Garfield Boulevard (55th Street) where it disbands. There will be picnics and fun activities following the parade, which will be located in Washington Park southeast of 51st and King Dr. with free giveaways and other treats. ABC-7 Anchor Hosea Sanders Returns to Airwaves By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer The city of broad shoulders is welcoming back a broadcast favorite to the television airwaves. Last week, ABC-7 news anchor Hosea Sanders made his return to the news program with his radiant smile and laid-back demeanor. For the past four months, Sanders has undergone treatment for prostate cancer, taking a leave of absence from the evening co-anchor seat. Prior to leading the ABC7 evening broadcast, he held the morning slot for nearly 22 years. “That was the most difficult thing. We’re so used to being on that clock, on that treadmill—running and gunning. For me to be forced to focus on myself for a change, to give to myself as opposed to always giving to everyone else. I was going back and forth to Northwestern Hospital visiting doctors, for therapy, scans, bloodwork. That’s another whole schedule and I’m still doing that,” he said. Sanders has worked in broadcast for four decades, taking his first professional gig at KARK-TV in Little Rock, Ark. Growing up in Arkadelphia, Ark., he excelled in football and track. He went on to attend Henderson State University, where he re-

Sanders with ABC-7 team Jerry Taft, Jim Rose and Cheryl Burton. endured an incredible journey filled with love, laughter, heartbreaking stories and long-lasting friendships. “You never know how your friends feel about you until you really need them. Some of my friends, especially Sylvia Perez and my friend Vivian King out of Milwaukee, got together and organized a food caravan. So, everyday somebody else was sending a meal over or making something,” said Sanders. “The first few weeks of my treatment, my brother was here helping me. They would make sure it was something hot and good to eat. It was such a loving gesture—a real friendship that they would do this for me. I was ready to come back.” Although he says he received the clearance from his doctors to return—the road to recovery is very real. He’s currently undergoing hormone therapy and will resume radiation at the end of August to allow some internal healing. Through the rigorous process of back and forth visits to Northwestern Hospital, it would have been more difficult without the support of his colleagues at ABC-7. “The station has been outstanding. They looked out for me better than I looked out for myself,” he laughs. “My news director would alert me on important paperwork. We’re not used to going through the insurance stuff, benefits and packages. They would sometimes watch out for me or some deadline that was coming up. Also, to check up and see how I was doing.” Sanders admits the delay in following up on his health is a major factor in fighting his illness. To share his experience openly has welcomed thousands of responses on social media and allowed a platform to encourage men to test for prostate cancer. “I heard so many people who went to get the test after I came out publically. One out of five Black men would get it. People think it’s the finger test or a colonoscopy, that’s not it. There aren’t any signs or symptoms. You have to take the blood test. My father had it. I would get tested because of that,” he admits. “I did what I tell people not to do. I waited too late. I got the information and thought, ‘it’s probably
something there’. I’ll take care of it later. I had so much going on. I was taking care of my mom and busy doing the job that it got to the point, they were saying ‘these numbers are troubling, please do something about it.’ I finally got a certified letter from the medical office saying I had to come in now.” Within two weeks, Sanders was having surgery. His furry companion, Buddy, has helped him throughout his healing process as well as Sanders—taking time to communicate with people about the importance of staying on top of one’s health. One of Sanders’ goals was to return back to work in time for the annual Bud Billiken parade in August. For several years, ABC-7 has aired the live broadcast of the largest African American parade in the U.S. and Sanders has shared hosting duties. “That was one of my goals. We are the type of people who like goals. That was one of my goals in my healing. No matter what, I want to be up and ready for the Bud Billiken. That’s our tradition—that’s us. I’ve been doing it for so many years and like hanging with Jim [Rose] and Cheryl [Burton]. Even before the parade, I enjoy walking along the route; shaking hands and smelling that barbeque. Getting a little rib or two and being out there—celebrating the good things about Chicago. This is our time to shine and show what we are not what they say we are.” He smiles, “I was going to make it. They would’ve had to skype me in. I was so happy the doctors released me in time.” Upon his return back to public life, Sanders says his faith, family and friends were not the only driving forces to his recovery. “For me, I really work out there. It’s not about covering a story. This is my home and I care about the people. They have been so good to me, sometimes you wonder if you deserve it. People have embraced me and swooped me up. That is one of the reasons why I wanted to do the parade this year-so I can say ‘thank you’.” www.chicagodefender.com

ComEd Icebox Derby Finals Shifts in Full Gear By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer This is the last week for 30 Chicago area teenage girls to prepare for ComEd’s Icebox Derby (IBD) competition. ComEd launched the program four years ago as an opportunity for Chicago students to educate and empower young women to explore areas in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). For three weeks participants worked to transform old refrigerators from ComEd’s Fridge and Freezer Recycling program into solar-powered racecars. Working with ComEd mentors, the six teams prepare as they assemble and decorate their racing machines, and on race day, Saturday, August 12, they will put their fridge cars to the test on a makeshift race track at Daley Plaza to win the STEM Cup, scholarships and other prizes. “Through programs like the Icebox Derby, we aim to help the young people in our communities see the STEM career opportunities before them,” said Anne Pramaggiore, president and CEO of ComEd. “We need tomorrow’s talent -- those who will help us advance systems, technologies
Chloe and Halle Bailey and find digital solutions for our customers. By helping to nurture and grow these future STEM stars, we are intentionally developing our workforce of the future.” Last year’s championship team Radiant Flames took the 2016 top honors and each team member received $1,500 each in scholarship awards. This year, participating teams include Blue Quest, Orange Flare, Green Galaxy,
IBD participants Violet Vortex, Teal Turbo and Yellow Spark. Each team includes five students along with three experienced ComEd mentors per group. Mentors have backgrounds in engineering design, solar energy and technology specialists. More than 230 girls applied online to join the 2017 IBD program. Each Icebox Derby contestant will receive a scholarship for completing the program and the
first-place winners in the 2017 race will receive a laptop/notebook and an additional $1,500 scholarship. The finals will take place Saturday, August 12 at Daley Plaza, where teams will compete and be cheered on by family and spectators. The start time is 3 p.m. and it’s open to the public. The event will be hosted by singing sensation and sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey.

Jetter has lived by the motto, “Nobody can stop you but yourself” and has internalized these words and kept pushing through all difficult barriers. He expressed that Black people can no longer pander to Whites in hope of equal entry into their system. Instead we must construct our own structures for the benefit and betterment of ourselves. Next, speaker Dr. Audrey Stillerman spoke about the effect of her findings on certain traumas in childhood to adulthood, stemming from Dr. Vincent Felitti’s research on the link between sexual trauma and obesity in adulthood, as well as other health problems. Her presentation was science-based and hands-on, as she had the audience participate in an Adverse Child-
hood Experiences (ACE) test and resiliency test. The former tallies various kinds of “abuse, neglect, and other hallmarks of a rough childhood.” Naturally, the higher the score, the higher the risk for health issues later in life. The latter test was an assessment of how well a person is able to bounce back from the curveballs of life. As resiliency is a necessary part of surviving life, the test shows a person what areas they may need to improve their adaptability. She discussed the development of the brain and how trauma affects it and how people can climb higher up the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, essentially teaching the audience “how we build resilience, feeling, and hope.” The community members in the audience considered this event a very important and essential one. Maria Pike, mother, survivor, and activist, is a Chicago resident who would like to see many changes in the city, starting with the education and protection of the children. “Students need to be taught civics and ethics in school,” she states. “There are children with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder); school should be a second
parent.” She also stressed the importance of Chicago returning to a community mindset. “We need to get back to the concept of the village. When there’s children raising children, there’s a lack of culture.” Following the keynote speaker, a panel facilitated by Dominica McBride was held for the introductions of those aiding in specific workshops. The panelists included Bernard Scott, Rev. Dr. Walter A. McCray, Eric K. Williams, Love McPherson, Xavier Ramey, Eli Williamson, Stanley Williams, Joanne Adjei, Laura S. Ng, Walidah Bennett, and Jaleel K. Abdul-Adil, Ph.D. The panels headed the following workshops, which were divided into Health (Walidah Bennett), Wealth (Stanley Williams; Eric K. Williams), Politics (Jaleel Abdul-Adil Ph.D.), Relationships (Laura Ng; Love McPherson), and Youth (Xavier Ramey, Dr. Walter McCray, Joanne Adjei). Participants were able to choose their own workshops before the conference began. With a presentation by the Example Setters, a youth spoken word and poetry team, and the aforementioned seminars, the conference was a great experience.

Anthony Murphy: The New Face of Aladdin’s Genie By Mary L. Datcher Defender Arts & Entertainment Editor With summer in full throttle, there is a great deal to do throughout the Chicago region. Over the last decade the number of traveling Broadway productions have increased dramatically as major theatre companies have recognized the third largest market as a thriving city of theatre goers. The Disney theatrical production of Aladdin has held its ground at the Cadillac Palace Theatre since April 11 of this year with an extended run until September 10, 2017. Since its original Broadway debut on March 20, 2014, Aladdin has become one of the top-selling theatre productions around the world expanding to London, Hamburg, Tokyo and Sydney. Now in Chicago, fans from all age groups are enjoying the high-octane energy of the vibrant young cast members, including the starring role of the Genie, played by Anthony Murphy. Counting down to its final weeks of entertaining Chicago audiences, the Defender talked in-depth to Murphy about his love for theater and bringing his signature style to such a favorite Disney character as the Genie. A native of St. Petersburg, Fla., he began to build his repertoire of work with theater companies including theatrical productions In the Heights throughout the state before taking the leap of faith and relocating to New York City. How did you break into the business? I started when I was much younger and my parents transferred me to a performing arts elementary school, and that’s how I caught the acting bug. Ever since then, I’ve always been in love with theater. Eventually when I was in high school, I told my parents this is what I want to do for a living. Thank God, I have very supportive parents. They said, ‘Alright, you want to do this? We’re going to do this strong and we’re going to do it big and we’re going to do it right.’ They started signing me up for summer intensives. I went to the Rutgers Summer Acting Conservatory and the Broadway Theatre Project. I understand you attended Otterbein University in Ohio to study theatre. Did you leave directly out of college to move to New York City? I made the leap to move to New York from living at home. I said it was time to go and make that jump. I called my best friend and asked to sleep on his couch. I moved up there with a job and a few pennies in my pocket and I worked my behind off while I was there. I did some off-Broadway shows and some shows in upstate New York. After a year of being there, I was talking one night with a dear friend of mine, Ariel Jacobs, who was at the time playing “Jasmine” in the Australian production of a “Aladdin” and her brother, Adam Jacob, is actually “Aladdin”—he originated the role on Broadway. She was talking to me and asked, “Why aren’t you playing the Genie? You’ll be so amazing at it.” I told her unfortunately at www.chicagodefender.com

She told me to send her a video of me doing something with a resume and she’d send it to the people who need to see it. I did and she did. A few days later, I had an appointment. After a month of vigorous auditions and them calling—I was cast as a Genie in Aladdin. It’s amazing—overnight my life has changed. I went to a training program in California. I worked out six hours a day to get my body to do this show. I love the fact that your parents were instrumental in making sure you had the resources to cultivate your art. Do you find that other young people may not have that same level of support coming up in theater? I’ve definitely seen that. I’ve seen some of my close friends who haven’t had the support and it’s harder for them but it’s not impossible. If this is what you want to do and love to do—you will find a way to make it happen. I was just fortunate enough to have two loving parents to make my journey a little easier. It’s definitely a practice to do. What makes Aladdin special from the previous theatre productions that you’ve worked on? It starts with the company that is producing it. The Disney Theatrical Group is an amazing company. They have made this process so easy and enjoyable. They’re always there for support for us. In theater that doesn’t happen a lot. You don’t get work with these amazing large companies. The show holds a special place in my heart. I grew up watching the film with Robin Williams and it was such a part of my childhood to now doing this production, playing this iconic role and making it my own. How do you like Chicago so far? I love it. It’s amazing. I just recently started venturing out and exploring different neighborhoods so I’m excited to do
more of that while I’m here. The audiences have been so awesome and welcom-

An Octoroon: A Melodrama of Good Vs. Evil Definition Theatre Company Presents the Chicago Premiere of “An Octoroon” by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins Directed by Chuck Smith In association with Goodman Theatre July 25 – August 20, 2017 By Rick and Brenda McCain Let’s Play Slavery even today is a sore subject and an unmovable stain within our society; however, being of a mixed race during those days was a blessing and a curse. But what if just a percentage could change your entire life and make you worthless? During this time if you were only oneeighth Black (a person Brenda and Rick having White ancesMcCain tors except for one Black great-grandparent), you would be classified as a Negro and considered an Octoroon. That one drop of Black blood would determine the outcome of how you would live the rest of your life-- as either privileged or as a slave. That one drop could make people who once loved you change to despise your very existence. The one drop of blood law is at the center of “An Octoroon,” a play written by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins; it is an adaptation of Dion Boucicault’s 1859 classic melodrama “The Octoroon.” The original play, which opened at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City, was extremely popular and ran for years in several road companies. An adaption from the 1856 novel “The Quadroon” (A quadroon or quarteron is a mixed-race person with one quarter African) by Thomas Mayne Reid, it involves the inhabitants of a Louisiana plantation called Terrebonne and sparked debates about

There were many contrasting critiques about Boucicault using theater to voice his political views. Jacobs-Jenkins gives us a modern take on the play, where he improvises the seditious take on race in America–both then and now-- with tragedy. This five act play starts off with playwright BJJ (Breon Arzell) in a black box talking to his therapist to try and overcome his depression. However, BJJ is solely focused on the preparation for his play. Despondent by issues of White actors

quitting on him because of the negative interpretations of them wearing Blackfaces and playing a White slave owner, BJJ, who is African-American, has to put on a Whiteface to bring the play to life. Jacobs-Jenkins’ contemporary satire of “An Octoroon” stayed true to the original classic, set on a plantation in Terrebonne, La., in 1859 in financial ruins. The plantation owner has passed away and the arrival of his heir, George (Breon Arzell), starts a chain of events that lead to saving the estate and the octoroon. Zoe (Ariel Richardson) is a titular octoroon who grew up in master’s house and who was educated and beautiful, which makes her desirable to George from the moment he meets her, but there are others seeking to claim the estate and Zoe. M’Closky (Breon Arzell), an evil overseer, announces that the plantation is for sale and plots to steal Zoe, who believes she is free but unknowingly is a piece of the property and therefore a part of the estate. To save the plantation, a plot is conceived to wed Dora (Carley Cornelius), an heiress, with George, but he is conflicted because his love is for the octoroon. When a letter that could have saved the estate doesn’t come, it’s sold and Zoe, who would rather die than to live as a slave, goes to the slave quarters to ask one of the slaves for some poison. Director Chuck Smith directs “An Octoroon” effortlessly and uses the melodrama to play upon the audience’s imagination.
His creative play deconstructs the significance of the sensational scene from the original melodrama, climaxing with the actors explaining and acting out what is going to happen next. “An Octoroon” makes you visually feel Brechtian’s tragedy and playwright Jacobs-Jenkins explores “the idea that you could feel something and then be aware that you’re feeling it.” Jacobs-Jenkins states that theater is a place for dramatic illusion and it is the most believable illusion of suffering and catharsis. In “An Octoroon,” being afraid of one drop is the illusion of suffering and actually suffering. If you like plots with new twists, this is the play for you. We recommend that you check it out at Victory Gardens, where you can learn that melodrama is about binaries and opposites, and where there is always good and bad with no gray areas. Chicago Groups Send Students Back to School With Supplies and Scholarships This weekend has been a busy one! Thank you for keeping me around town! The weekend started with the Black Tie Gala of the First Step Foundation, which provides sports, educational and spiritual development to young males starting at age 4. Congratulations to Co-Founders Corey Harper and John Batson. My next stop was to congratulate Prof. Timuel D. Black, Senior Statesman of Chicago’s South Side, for his 3rd Annual Professor Timuel D. Black Distinguished Guest Lecture Award and Jazz Concert. The guest speaker was Community Ambassador Rudy Nimocks, who recently won U of Chicago’s Diversity Leadership Award. I was honored to have visited the Chicago (IL) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. 3rd Annual Back to School Block Party and Health Fair held at the Edward G. Irvin Foundation Achievement Center. The event promoted economic development and educational programs. There were vendors from Walgreens, BlueCross/ Shield and many more. They also provided dental exams for students, free haircuts for boys, free school supplies and book bags. In attendance and supporting the event was Secretary of State Jessie White, Rev. Leon Finney, Alderman Willie Cochran and State Senator Kwame Raoul. Great job, Event Chairman Glenn Brooks. In the MIXX: Hip Hop Takeover at Lolla, Emanuel Vs. Trump and CPS Cuts Jobs By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer If you were commuting from downtown last week or happen to live within walking distance from Grant Park, then you were in Lolla Land. At the top of every August, South of Wacker Drive is a madhouse with rippling effects throughout Mary L. Datcher the entire downtown area—slowing down traffic to a complete stop. Chicago residents can find the third largest music festival in the U.S. somewhat obtrusive with its thousands of young attendees scurrying across Michigan Ave. to see their favorite musical acts. Fortunately, I knew where to park and how to get in and out of the congestion so it didn’t stop me from enjoying the four-day festival. Lollapalooza started out as a traveling tour in the 1990’s with a diverse mix of both Rock and Hip-Hop talent on its lineup. I had the pleasure of attending shows at Tinley Park so I have witnessed firsthand the festival’s continual growth. They have continued the tradition with an entirely new generation of music attendees, adding an array of musical genres to the event including a heavy emphasis on the EDM genre. Although the 400,000 attendees who came out each day were predominately White attendees, festival organizers premiered more hip-hop performances this year than in past years. From the first day’s performances by the Migos, Wiz Khalifa and Lil Uzi Vert throughout Sunday’s final day featuring Xavier Omar, NoName, Big Sean, Duckwrth and Rae Sremmurd. But hands down, Chance the Rapper KILLED IT, headlining the Grant Park stage on Saturday night. It was simply M-A-G-I-C. Accompanied by a live band, he opened up the set with a short clip of news soundbites of the 24-year-old’s philanthropic achievements. Performing to a packed-out crowd of 50,000 crammed into the South end of the park, continual fireworks lit up the sky as he rocked the stage. At one point in his performance, he informed the sea of millennial bodies to “hold your politicians accountable.” Hmmm…I wonder if Chancellor is preparing for a possible bid for public office in the next few years? He definitely has both parents who could easily fill the shoes as his campaign managers. We want to give a CRAZY shout-out to Red Bull TV for sharing their live streaming of Lollapalooza’s performances and interviews throughout the weekend on chicagodefender.com. A reported $4.7 million was made during the sold-out music festival weekend for the Airbnb community in Chicago. This is double the amount during the World Series games which drew $2.6 million in revenue for Airbnb hosts. But out of the 15,000 guests staying during Lollapalooza, only 3,000 guests were staying at South Side locations. Executives at Airbnb are doing their due dilagence to increase those numbers in predominately African-American neighborhoods. Emanuel vs. Trump We saw it coming and now it’s here for the courts to handle. On Monday, the City of Chicago filed a federal lawsuit to prevent the Department of Justice from pushing through a federal crime prevention grant on unrelated and unlawful immigration enforcement actions. “Chicago will not be blackmailed into changing our values, and we are and will remain a welcoming city,” said Mayor

HBCUs: Committed To Overcome the Challenges By Anta Njie Defender Contributing Writer In 1904, Mary McLeod Bethune gave a new definition to the word determination. As one of 17 siblings born to former slaves, Bethune embraced the importance of education at a young age and understood it to be Black America’s ticket toward achieving overall racial advancement. After her many years of schooling, including two years spent at Dwight Moody’s Institute for Home and Foreign Missions right here in Chicago, Bethune returned to the South and embarked upon the profession that she deemed saved her life: a teacher. As an educator, she found herself to be a vessel to uplift Black youth who would otherwise become products of their environment, as the South, at the time, provided little to no room for growth for the African-American politically, socially, economically or mentally. She sought to change that and vowed to make opportunities for social mobility through education that was widespread for the entire African-American community. With one dollar and fifty cents, she accomplished that goal. Daytona Literary and Industrial Training School for Girls was

The timeline of Mary McLeod Bethune’s life holds critical importance to the overall discussion of Historically Black Colleges and Universities in present day. Although Bethune-Cookman was not the first HBCU to adorn our nation, it was amongst one of the first of the 20th century, which marked a distinct change in tides for government cooperation with the development and sustenance of institutions that were overtly clear in their message of aiming to achieve social advancement for the African American. We now know, as time has pressed forward, that government funding for our beloved institutions has become an even more integral thread to the fabric
of their being. In a time when both federal and state funding has been reduced, our institutions have taken a hit. In 1976, 18 percent of African-Americans were enrolled in degree-awarding institutions and in that time, HBCUs were responsible for 35 percent of all administered bachelor degrees. Starkly in 2014, only 8 percent of African Americans were enrolled in degree-awarding institutions, and HBCUs were only responsible for 15 percent of all administered bachelor degrees. Even with the challenges HBCU face, the history of those schools cannot be forgotten, as they have produced some of the best and brightest contributors to society. Yet and still, the future of our beloved institutions is unknown. While some rest comfortably in their purpose, others challenge their existence consistently. Faith in them may waiver, but the results they generate debunk all preconceived notions about them. When asking HBCU junior Makiah Lyons about her experience at Howard University thus far, she encompasses all of this by stating: “I think that all institutions lack some things. The public just chooses to pick at the inequities of HBCUs the most. In retrospect, however, we always deliver; contrary to what they want to occur obviously--but that’s why we were put here in the first place. To be defiant.” HBCUs have always been notorious for their commitment to education of the poor, while simultaneously providing students with a thorough curriculum in an environment that celebrates African American culture. The Chicago Football Classic brings the culture of Black college football to mainstream arenas.

Healthy Baked Crab Cakes Courtesy of VeryWell.com Crab cakes are so reminiscent of summer. Full of delicious crab, they can transport you to a coastal vacation without your ever leaving your house. By making them at home instead of ordering them from a restaurant or buying them pre-made at the store, you can control everything that goes into them. That means tons of fresh lump crab meat, just enough bread crumbs to hold them together, and fresh vegetables and spices for flavor. You can also control what stays out of them—lots of sodium and fat! These healthy crab cakes are lightened up by baking instead of frying, using just a bit of whole wheat bread crumbs and no added salt. It’s all served with a delicious spicy Greek yogurt dipping sauce. Ingredients •1 egg + 1 egg white •1 tablespoon dijon mustard •Juice from 1 lemon •1/2 teaspoon paprika •1/4 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper •8 ounces crab meat
•1/2 cup whole wheat panko bread crumbs •2 cloves garlic, minced •1/2 jalapeno, minced •1 green onion, chopped •Olive oil or oil spray •1/2 cup nonfat plain Greek yogurt •1 teaspoon dijon mustard •1 green onion, finely chopped
•Juice of 1/2 lemon •1/2 teaspoon cayenne •Pinch freshly cracked black pepper Preparation 1.Heat oven to 400 degrees F. 2.In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, dijon, lemon juice, paprika, and black pepper. Stir in crab, garlic, jalapeno, and green onion. Gently stir in bread crumbs until just
combined. 3.Form mixture into 8 patties and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment or a silicone baking mat. Lightly brush or spray the tops of each with olive oil. 4.Bake for 15 minutes or until the tops are lightly golden. Remove from the oven and serve with sauce. 1.To make the sauce, whisk together all ingredients from Greek yogurt through cracked black pepper, until smooth. Ingredient Variations and Substitutions Add more or less jalapeno and cayenne pepper based on your preferred spice level. Cooking and Serving Tips Make it easy on yourself by buying crab meat that has already been shelled. It should be near the seafood counter at the grocery store. If you can’t find whole wheat bread crumbs, make your own! Toast a slice of whole wheat bread until crispy, then blend in the food processor until large crumbs form. Try these cakes over a green salad for lunch or share them with friends as a delicious summer appetizer.
