Plan to Prevent Future CPS Closures Becomes Law State Senator Mattie Hunter’s (D-Chicago) plan to prevent future closures of Chicago Public Schools without proper warning was signed into law this week.

“For years, CPS has made decisions about opening and closing schools without engaging communities,” Hunter said. “It’s long overdue but I’m glad that we now have a practice in place that will help bring transparency and valuable community input into the capital improvement process.”

Under the current school code, CPS is expected to create and implement a 10-year facilities plan, but they have failed to do so in recent years.

Mattie Hunter “As we’ve seen in the news lately, CPS has been closing school doors without notice, leaving thousands of students without a neighborhood school to go to or forcing them to travel to a new consolidated school,” Hunter said. “That’s unacceptable.”

House Bill 5721 requires more long-term planning, transparency for capital spending, community input and district collaboration to prevent inefficient and disruptive school closings. It also mandates CPS to provide more notice and information on the status of schools.

“This new law will help us gather all the information we need so we can make the best decision for our students,” Hunter said. “This is a step in the right direction to reforming CPS and ensuring that students all across Chicago are receiving the quality education they deserve.”

Bishop Reginald Jackson, President, Bishops Council of the African Methodist Episcopal Church

Black Church to Assemble for Call to Conscience, Day of Action Across from White House on Sept. 6 The African Methodist Episcopal church has released a statement calling for the Black Church to participate in a day of action. The statement says in part: “This is a challenging time in the life of our nation, a time which demands the church of Jesus Christ, to live up to what it is called to do, to represent Jesus in His world, to be about the work of His kingdom on earth. Historically, the Black Church has been ‘the conscience of the nation.’

“Today the Black Church is again called to be ‘the conscience of the nation.’ To speak to the nation about the rightness or wrongness of its policies and behavior. This is particularly important when the so called ‘Evangelical Christians’ appear to be the dominant voice for people of faith in this nation, supporting the nation’s leader who spouts racism, sexism, and repeatedly lies to the nation.

They appear to be the dominant voice of people of faith in the nation, because the Black Church has largely been silent.

“It is time for the Black Church to speak, our congregations and the nation need to hear us.

Therefore, Black denominational and faith leaders have scheduled a “Call to Conscience - Day of Action” for September 5th and 6th in Washington D.C. It is not only time for us to say something, we must do something.

“Our coming together will also kick-off our efforts for the mid-term elections. Our priority will be to register, educate, organize and mobilize our people to vote in November. If Blacks turn out in large numbers, we will determine the outcome in a large number of races.

“We are calling pastors, congregants, and citizens from across the country to join us in Washington D.C. on September 5th and 6th, as we call the nation to conscience. Additionally, Sunday, September 2nd is designated as ‘Social Justice Sunday.’ We are asking every pastor to preach a sermon related to “Social Justice.”

“There are some who think the Black Church is weak and has little strength or influence. This thinking is incorrect. We are at war, and we call all soldiers to active duty.”

Living With Wounds Behind the scene of those hit by gun violence who live to tell about it

By Deborah Bayliss Defender Contributing Writer With gun violence occurring so often and in such high numbers in Chicago, you seldom hear about the struggles and challenges survivors face as they try to regain some semblance of a life that has forever changed.

An estimated 80,000 people survive nonfatal gun injuries in the U.S. each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Chicago resident Patrick Noel is one of the survivors still healing from his wounds.

It was a late evening in July 2016 when Noel returned home after spending time at a backyard cookout with his twin brother Derrick Noel and other friends and family on Chicago’s South Side when two men he didn’t know drove up and opened fire, hitting him six times in front of his Calumet City home.

That year, Chicago made national headlines that read, “Chicago saw more homicides than New York and LA combined,” that prompted then President-elect Donald Trump to tell Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to seek federal help to deal with the City’s most violent year in two decades that saw 762 homicides, 3,550 shooting incidents and 4,331 shooting victims, 1,100 more shooting incidents than 2015, according to Chicago Police Department data. In comparison, this year, there have been 374 homicides with 1666 people shot and wounded, according to statistics at heyjackass.com.

At press time, 41 of those homicides occured in August 2018.

We often hear of the grief of the loved ones left to mourn those who have been killed, but there’s another tragic picture: the victim left to live with the lasting impact of the violence—physically and emotionally.

Noel is still healing from the 37 surgeries it’s taken to repair his leg and the damage done to his mid-section, including the implantation of seven feet of intestine donated by his twin brother Derrick Noel. “I have a rod that runs from my knee to my hip and I walk with a slight limp and still have bullet fragments that are still coming out.” Patrick Noel adjusting to as a survivor of gun violence.

“I don’t remember feeling the pain after being shot,” Patrick Noel said during an interview with the Chicago Defender. “It had to be mistaken identity because I didn’t know them. I went to work every day, kept to myself and spent my time with my son. They [shooters] were about 10 feet away from me and asked if I lived there. I hesitated but said yes. I felt the force of a bullet hit me in my left leg and I fell to the ground. They shot ten times, I was hit six times. I remember yell-

ing for help. I remember seeing a neighbor from across the street.

Someone called my brother. My mother said I was talking and conscious but I don’t remember. I was also hit in the foot, my shoulder, abdomen, my backside and a bullet grazed the back of my head.”

Noel was taken straight into surgery at Advocate Christ Hospital. The bullet broke and shattered the bone in his left leg.

Physical recovery from a gunshot, even if someone is only grazed, can take months to years with psychological consequences that can last a lifetime, experts say.

In addition to the injury to his leg, Noel faced an even bigger challenge with the bullet that pierced the blood vessels supply to his small intestine causing the organ to start to die, according to Enrico Benedetti, professor and Warren H. Cole Chair of Surgery at the University of Illinois Hospital.

A renowned transplant surgeon, Benedetti has performed

approximately two-thirds of the world’s small bowel living donor transplants. He is also one of just four surgeons worldwide to perform an identical twin living-donor small bowel transplant. Only four of these surgeries have been performed worldwide.

Noel ended up at the UI hospital thanks to his sister who called around in search of a doctor to perform his abdominal surgery while he was at Advocate Christ.

A doctor at Advocate was also trying to reach Benedetti at the same time.

Noel’s abdominal area remained open for six or seven months so the doctors and nurses could clean it. He received nutrition intravenously.

Noel said. “I wasn’t able to eat regular food. I was in a lot of pain and lost a lot of weight.”

Doctors at UI Health told Noel he would more than likely require a small bowel transplant. The small bowel, also known as the small intestine, is responsible for absorbing nutrients from food. If it’s damaged or removed, patients have to receive nutrition intravenously, which carries risks of line infections and liver failure.

Noel had a perfect match for a transplant in his identical twin brother, Derrick, who did not hesitate to help his twin.

“Words can’t describe what I felt when I first saw my brother on the hospital stretcher right after he was shot,” Derrick said. “He had just left my house and had just talked to a friend of ours on the phone right before he was shot.”

Though Derrick, who works as a barber in an area where gun violence is prevalent, has healed physically from the surgery, mentally and emotionally it was rough for him and he said he has trouble sleeping. He recognizes that he and his brother were traumatized and is open to counseling.

He added, “some of my young clients [at the barbershop] survive the gun violence and some don’t.”

He thanked Dr. Benedetti and the other doctors and staff for saving his brother’s life.

The Noel twins had the transplant surgery in 2017.

A Perfect Match “When I learned that Patrick had an identical twin willing to make the donation, I knew that a living-donor transplant would not only be possible, but because his brother is a genetic match, he is also a perfect match,” Benedetti said. “Rejection and infection are the two main concerns for any transplant, especially opportunistic infections that arise due to the immune-suppressing anti-rejection drugs. Because of Derrick, Patrick effectively avoids both these risks.”

Benedetti and Ivo Tzvetanov, associate professor of transplant surgery in the UIC College of Medicine, removed about seven feet of the small intestine from Derrick — most people have about 20 feet of small intestine — and used it to connect Patrick’s stomach and large bowel. The surgery went smoothly and both brothers had a rapid recovery, though Patrick is still healing.

They couldn’t stretch my abdominal muscles back together because I was opened and closed so many times.” Patrick Noel but eventually covered it he said thanks to his sister and UI health who worked to get it approved.

Life Changes As he continues to heal and adjusts to a life that was forever changed by the shooting, Noel lost the longtime job he held prior to the shooting because of the length of time he was off. The job also requires heavy lifting, something he’s not able to do anymore.

I have a lot of scars from being cut

for tubes and air pockets and the surgeries. I have to roll out of bed and I can’t run and play with my son. My son, who was six when I was shot, went swimming over the summer but I couldn’t swim with him. I didn’t tell him I was shot until last year. I can’t even lift him and wrestle with him. I was also into home improvement but can’t do that anymore. My son helped me a lot when I got home after spending ten months in the hospital. I have a lot of scars.

As he heals, Noel acknowledges the mental trauma he’s suffered but said he doesn’t have nightmares.

He’s starting on the path of becoming a motivational speaker so he can share his story. He’s also in www.chicagodefender.com

the beginning stages of starting a nonprofit organization.

He says that his family was a great support for him and that he loves them very much.

As for the gun violence, he said young people are being misguided and the lack of resources in high crime areas and the lack of parenting need to be addressed.

“I moved from Calumet City and also thought about moving out of Chicago, but I’m going to stay and offer help and try to change things,” Patrick said.

Help for Victims Pastor Donovan Price is a First Responder Pastor who shows up at the scene of shootings to console the victims’ family members and to also offer prayer solace for

the police and reporters on the scene.

Price has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and has studied Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He said it’s part of what happens with crime and is a result that flips into the cause of crime.

“A young man with anger feels he has to carry a gun because ‘they’ have guns and because he’s in danger just going back and forth to work or wherever he’s going,” Price said. Even in the midst of all the crime and PTSD, people still have to go to work and school, and so people just take their PTSD along with them wherever they have to go and are not getting treated for it.”

Lori Lightfoot, a Chicago mayoral candidate, said on WVON last week that gun violence should officially be deemed a public health crisis. If gun violence was deemed as such, the approach to dealing with it would be different. The efforts would be finding the root cause and how to treat it in a holistic way, she added.

Local activists are calling for more capital investment and more social resources in the high poverty, high crime areas of Chicago.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan‘s office provides services to help victims meet their challenges and regain peace of mind. Programs administered by the Crime Victim Services Division include The Illinois Crime Victim Compensation Program, which provides direct financial assistance to innocent victims of violent crime to reimburse out-of-pocket expenses related to the crime.

Community Chicago Remembers the Queen of Soul

By Clarence Waldron Defender Guest Writer With the passing of Aretha Franklin, Chicagoans are recalling her strong love for the City.

Former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama said on Twitter, “Aretha helped define the American experience. In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade – our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. May the Queen of Soul rest in eternal peace.”

When appearing in the City, Aretha loved to dine at the exclusive RL Restaurant on Chicago off North Michigan Avenue. She and her entourage would sit at Table 68, the corner table. She loved calf liver and Dover sole. She took care of the wait staff with generous tips.

She also loved the gumbo at Captain Hard Time on East 79th Street on the City’s South Side.

She declared the gumbo, “the best gumbo in the world.”

Mother Josephine Wade remembers, “Aretha was very good to everyone. She treated you so well. I would take her gumbo down to her hotel and in 2015, I prepared gumbo for her backstage reception at Ravinia Music Festival. She often paid me $1,000 to $1,500 more than the cost of the gumbo. I’m trying to go to Detroit for her funeral services.”

John Hall, Jr., the former Arista Records Midwest Regional Director, R&B Promotion based in Chicago, says he will remember Aretha Franklin for “being a nice, regular person. There was nothing phony about her.”

Aretha was a lifelong supporter of the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow PUSH Coalition and performed several benefits for the human rights organization.

Rev. Jackson says, “My heart is heavy and in so much pain. A lot of music left earth today. The Heavens rejoice. Aretha, my sister beloved and friend with the four-octave range inimitable sound, has gone even higher. She had been battling a debilitating illness over the last few years. She fought as gallantly as she sang with faith, power and dignity… She did not own sickness. She owned health.

She owned joy, power, love and music…forever ours, Aretha.”

Theater where she became the “Queen of Soul” in the 60s. WVON deejay Pervis Spann gave her the nickname soon after Dinah Washington, the Queen of the Blues, died. Spann had vision and could tell Aretha’s music was unique, everlasting and soulful.

Nick Pullia, spokesman for Ravinia, said, “We had originally scheduled Aretha to perform in June of 2017, but under doctor’s orders, she had to postpone it until September…aside from the obvious weight loss, there’d be no guessing that anything was wrong because she tore the roof off the place.”

days about how blessed they feel to have witnessed the bigger-thanlife Aretha in full voice and great spirits one last time at Ravinia… she’s left a legacy that will keep her alive forever.”

New York City leaders may have to take a page from its own blueprint as the city’s crime rate is on the rise since the record lows recorded in 2017. Warring New York City gangs reportedly is the main cause of the increase in the city’s murder rate, according to a July 2018 New York Post article.

New York City’s crime decrease was attributed in part to a strategy that included using less deadly force, making fewer arrests and scaled back controversial practices like stopping and frisking thousands of people on the streets.

“As for Chicago, the organizations that are marching need to also march in the high-crime areas where the shootings are taking place and the pastors need to come outside of the churches and preach sermons in those same neighborhoods and spread a message of love,” Salaberrios said.

“I totally believe the church has the biggest role to play in stopping

Johnson said during a press conference following the weekend in early August where 70 people were shot, 12 fatally, that police would use every tool at its disposal to combat the violence and hold repeat offenders accountable for their actions.

He added that on weekdays, the Chicago Police Department will add 430 officers in the most violent South and West side neighborhoods, and 600 officers on the weekend.

Chicago pastors and residents, however, say a more holistic approach is needed to deal with the problem and that more investment and resources are needed in the

high crime areas.

Salaberrios is the author of bestseller “Street God” and former pastor of Infinity Bible Church founded in partnership with Tim Keller and Redeemer City to City, in the South Bronx of New York City. Infinity spear-heads numerous outreach events.

The church’s impact in the Bronx River Housing projects, in particular, has been credited with eliminating homicides and reducing drug dealing in that community to an all-time low for over a decade, according to information provided by Salaberrios.

As a worldwide missionary, church planter, and speaker, Salaberrios has shared the gospel on every continent except Antarctica.

He and his wife, Tiffany, live in the Bronx with their two daughters.

Friends of the Children Host Panel Discussion on Early Identification and Intervention of Childhood Trauma Friends of the Children recently hosted a panel discussion on: “Red Flags: The Importance of Early Identification and Intervention to Address Childhood Trauma.” Several officials shared insight on the important issue.

The program is financed with voluntary payments made by downtown development projects in exchange for increased density for a given site.

Eighty percent of those payments are earmarked for the Neighborhood Opportunity Fund for projects on the South and West sides. The remainder is split between local infrastructure projects and landmark buildings citywide.

Mayor Emanuel and the Department of Planning and Development (DPD) announced the first round of Neighborhood Opportunity Fund grants in June 2017, totaling $3.2 million that supported 32 businesses.

The second round of grants, announced in March 2018, included another $3.2 million that will support 25 projects. With the latest round included, the program has supported more than $55 million of new investment in Chicago’s neighborhoods.

This third round will also help fund a community art space on

91st Street in South Chicago, a community café and business incubator in Little Village, a family-owned barbecue restaurant on Chicago Avenue in the Austin community, a barber college on Halsted Street in Roseland and the new visitor’s center for the National Monument Park in Pullman.

The program also helps existing neighborhood anchor small businesses remodel and update their facilities.

The Neighborhood Opportunity Fund also helps Chicago-based entrepreneurs open second and third locations within the City. Majani Restaurant and Catering will purchase and rehab a new facility that will serve as a commissary kitchen to support growing retail and catering operations for the vegan restaurant.

The Fund also supports neighborhood businesses looking to physically expand their footprint to grow and enhance their business in their current location. SkyArt, 3026 E 91st St., an established community arts organization, will

add a new sculpture studio and kiln room.

Businesses receiving investment from all three rounds are provided with support from the City to obtain necessary building permits, licenses and other business needs.

“These are public-private partnerships, every step of the way,” DPD Commissioner David L. Reifman said. “We’re committed to doing everything in our power to secure financing and get these projects over the finish line to improve quality of life for South and West side residents.”

Since its inception, the Neighborhood Opportunity Fund has collected more than $23 million from downtown construction projects. Payments are made to the City when building permits are issued. Approximately $45 million from approved projects is pending.

on the life and leadership lessons I learned from dynamic, brave women like Shirley Anita Chisholm and my family matriarch, Lucille Jones, aka Great Grand. Great Grand was a woman, who, like Ms. Chisholm, Mamie Till, Fannie Lou Hamer, Lorraine Hansberry and Ida B. Wells (who recently had Congress Pkwy named in her honor, based on the hard work and tenacity of a whole bunch of folks, most notably her great, grand daughter, Michelle Duster), were brave, big-boned and/or big voiced, in spirit and demeanor, whether loud or soft-spoken. Women like Great Grand had learned from THEIR mothers how to carefully craft their words into narratives that were life lessons, intended to assist their families to safely navigate their way through the world. They represented what Black women today know: we put in the WORK. In numerical terms, think 100, or at least 94 percent-that’s the percentage of Black women who voted for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton to be the first woman to become president of the United States. Black women have pushed polls and people, working in front of or behind the ballot since the civil rights movement.

Chisholm later wrote of her unsuccessful bid, “The next time a woman runs, or a Black, or a Jew or anyone from a group that the country is ‘not ready’ to elect to its highest office, I believe that he or she will be taken seriously from the start… I ran because somebody had to do it first.”

She made moves and spoke words that were so bold, so bodacious, so BOSS that it illuminated paths for other politicians who dared to be “firsts” in their respective White House bids that followed. Among the most noted are Jesse Jackson, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton. Now Stacey Abrams is on that same path as a top contender to become the first Black female governor of Georgia. Abrams appears on the cover of this month’s Time Magazine, which has been dubbed “The South Issue.” I appreciate the title since a lot of my writing as an author focuses on the South. I write a lot about Great Grand, a native Southerner, who cooked collard greens and made biscuits that tasted so tough, that after the first bite, you’d get up and slap somebody. And after the second taste, you’d slap yourself. Repeatedly.

Front Porch, has Southern connections to my childhood visits to Brinkley, Ark. So, when I opened my mailbox to see Ms. Abrams standing there, tall, full-figured and confident, daintily poised on top of the magazine, staring assuredly at me, I immediately gave her a fist pump.

Ms. Chisholm was with us at that moment as well, somewhere off in the distance, mouthing the words, “Unbought and UnBossed.” Believe it. Be it. Achieve it.

Chisholm dealt with a lot during her political career, including racism, sexism, AND idiotism. But through it all she remained focused on the REALISM of who she was, her own person. My kind of woman.

#OnFacts: Insecure--It’s Not Just A Television Series

All too often, I notice posts from the same few people who are Elle Smith A LWAY S spending time discussing their “haters”... and each time that I see a post like this, my eyes roll. And I mean HARD. Now, I’m not here to tell you how you should use your social media; that’s on you. But I had to write about the fact that there are way more insecure people out here than you could ever imagine. To assist in this theory, I took a brief poll 8 August 22 - 28, 2018

on my InstaStories Monday. The question was “how much do you really love yourself?” 57 percent clicked on the “TONS!” button; an alarming 43 percent clicked on the “Working On It TBH” button (TBH stands for “to be honest”).

One, I am glad that people are loving themselves and are confident in who they are! You never know what it may have taken for them to get there! Two, I am also glad that people are honest enough to admit that they could use more self-love, and that they are working on it. Of course, the people who make the consistent “haters” posts didn’t take the poll. You might be saying “oh maybe they just didn’t catch your story that day,” and I may be able to agree with you...if those SAME PEOPLE weren’t ones who also viewed the poll. Oops. Lol. Let me give you three quick tips on how you can keep your insecurities in check: 1. Stop Dedicating Posts To Things That Don’t Matter. Sometimes, we are so quick to point out

The best way to “fight the urge” to expose your insecurities? Figure out those things that you love about “you.” the behaviors of someone else, when it’s our own toxic behaviors or habits that we need to check.

Your ego will have you thinking that people are sitting up somewhere discussing you--they’re not.

I can easily sum it up like this: children have imaginary friends; adults have imaginary enemies. Fight the urge to give free press to the haters that could very well be in your head. Even if you have real ones... you know they’re watching you. So what?

You Won’t Have Time To Commit To Foolishness. Naysayers are doing their job. They are SUPPOSED to speak ill of what you have accomplished because they aren’t doing anything BUT sitting on the couch. The best way to stay focused on your goals? Don’t focus on the negative. If it isn’t helping me to succeed, doesn’t pay me for the work I’ve done, or grant me access to the places I desire to go; It doesn’t get free room and board in my brain. Say what you want; just make sure you spell my name right lol. That business you want to start? Start it. That book you want to read? Dig in. That blog you want to write? Get busy. Get caught working, not discussing the irrelevant.

3. Find Something That You Love About YOU And Focus On That. The best way to “fight the urge” to expose your insecurities?

Figure out those things that you love about “you.” Listen, we ALL have insecurities about things-from our looks, where we feel we

should be in life, relationship woes, and so much more. Some of us are just able to combat those feelings with positive thinking and intentional acts of self-love. For YEARS, I was teased about my skin color, and it took me some time to fall in love with something that I could not change. I got used to thinking that God didn’t make a mistake when He created me, so I began falling in love with everything about me, while working on things that I COULD change. Plus, the positive family validation was always there (that’s an article for another day!).

Look inward before you make a post about what you THINK others are saying about you. It’s ok to be a little selfish sometimes and focus on yourself. And once people realize that they cannot ruffle your feathers, they have to move on.

The Chicago State Educators Scholarship Fund was organized in 2006 by Dr. Frank Horton III, retired CPS Principal, and Lille Kinard Chandler, a retired CPS guidance counselor. Community Dream Big Conference Comes Back to Chicago

Research suggests that the average size of a women in the United States ranges between size 16-20, however on most runways and in most magazines, you do not see this represented. Last year, Chicago native Natasha Williams created the Dream Big conference, a conference organized for plus sized women. The conference not only offers workshops, seminars and vendors, the conference offers attendees the opportunity to meet with model agents and talent scouts looking for plus sized talent. But more than just looking to help women in the plus sized community, the Dream Big conference is about all women. Williams seeks to help all women gain confidence, that is the real mission of the Dream Big conference.

Natasha Williams Dream Big conference last year, a result of being laid off from her job in graphic design and a chance to pursue her passion for fashion. Her goal was to help others through hosting the conference and to give women of all sizes, but especially plus sized women, an opportunity to be seen and maybe even signed with an agency. The conference was also about having a good time, which is what you can expect when the conference comes to Chicago again August 24-25, 2018.

The Dream Big Conference will be a chance for women to come and get educated and hopefully, have their dreams fulfilled. Williams doesn’t want to be size exclusive so women who are not plus sized are welcome to attend. The goal of the conference is to assist women with being more confident through fashion and beauty. This year’s conference will have a wide variety of panel discussions on various topics from personal branding to starting a career in broadcast media. Williams’ goal is to have women leaving the conference feeling empowered and with the feeling that they can take on the world and not let anything stop them.

As a plus sized woman herself, Williams feels that there is a lot of backlash surrounding being a plus sized woman. She states that people often assume that women are plus sized because they eat too much and that they are unhealthy.

She shares, “Just because we are plus sized doesn’t mean that

Old Town School of Folk Music’s New Deputy Director Says, “It’s Time for the Black Woman” We spoke with musician and educator Rashida Phillips to learn about how the School is evolving, what the role means for her and her family and how she defines Black generational wealth.

This year the Old Town School of Folk Music, the nation’s largest community arts school, celebrates its first-ever deputy director, Rashida Phillips.

The St. Louis native has spent the last 15 years working in Chicago’s cultural and educational sectors and performing at jazz venues across the city. Phillips says she joins during a significant period of change for the 61-year-old institution. She hopes it’ll mark a time when the “folk” at Old Town School of Folk Music will be more inclusive—reflective of Chicago’s vast musical history as well as its people.

Phillips shared what her new position means for Old Town, the Chicago art scene and her family.

The conversation has been edited for length and clarity.

Can you talk about your role as the school’s first deputy director?

I work primarily with the education programs: community initiatives and operations and schoolwide initiatives. The responsibility for me is to think about the enrollment of the future, what those future populations [of students] look like, and coming to ourselves in terms of moving out of a “folk” label. Some people feel like it’s just banjos and guitars, and they don’t understand what folk means.

We started the Teen Collective program that’s growing. We know that Chicago has an active community of young folks, so if we don’t change, they’re gonna change it for us. That’s for sure.

What are a few of your goals for this new position?

We have initiatives that are happening here on [our Lincoln Square] campus. We have a lot of these programs building in North Lawndale and Englewood and its THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

What we’re trying to do in those neighborhoods is help smaller, grassroots organizations build capacity, number one, and bring in resources to those communities.

That means maybe musical instruments, some funding, shared knowledge of development strategies, instruction in arts and music and supporting professional development and job opportunities. We are supporting some of their ideas around community health and community wellness. We’re really trying to avoid this trickle-down scenario where you have larger arts organizations just handing out the remnants to the Brown and Black community.

Coming into this position, I specifically said I don’t want to “other” those initiatives. We shouldn’t think of them as these alternative programs, these programs way across the city that don’t have anything to do with our programming

here on the North Side. We really want to work on being the authentic partner.

What’s the department culture like here?

We’ve been around for 61 years and we were really seeded here not only in the folk movement but in the Civil Rights Movement.

“We Shall Overcome” came out of here. Mahalia Jackson was here in the early days working, and they were documenting music of hers.

We had a lot of folks coming together with that justice mentality of that time. I’m hoping that we can infuse that in our programming a little bit more because that’s the pulse of this city.

What led you to this position? Tell us about your journey.

I had always really been engrossed in music and came out of parents that educated me on what Black culture looked like and the power of Black people historically. Jazz is what spoke to me in my heart. In high school I started singing jazz and really just found www.chicagodefender.com

a power in it through stories and storytelling.

Coming out of Oberlin [College], my undergrad, one of the first colleges to educate women and Black people, there was always that consciousness in place.

I’ve always been interested in the intersection of arts, of education, of history. I found myself in a place that supported the stories of young people, the Chicago Children’s Museum.

Then I worked at Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education, where we looked at arts integration into school curriculum. I think the youth now are so much more ahead of that game than I was at that time.

[Art is] the medium in which they express themselves and communicate their life interests.

I had a mom who was a high school teacher and she said, “I always loved high school because they always kept me young, they always kept me hip.” I get that, so I’ve tried to follow that pathway in providing opportunities for young

people to find their voice.

What are you most proud of professionally?

I’m most proud of getting to this point. I promised myself that getting into these upper positions, I would be my most authentic self.

In the interviewing process, the executive director had said something like, “Why now? Why is it important?” and I said, “You know what? It’s my time. Particularly it’s time for the black woman. We have put the elbow grease in. We have helped folks through. It’s our turn to step into the spotlight and not just support people and hold folks up, but really take the reins because we’ve earned it.” And I said to him, “I feel like I’ve earned it at this point. And I feel like a lot of Black and Brown people and Black and Brown women have the right to be at the helm of these institutions.” So I felt proud in being able to take that on.

This summer at City Bureau, we’re looking into stories about Black generational wealth in Chicago; how it’s gained, lost and passed to the next generation. How do you define Black wealth for yourself?

We got a lot of wealth just because we are rooted in ourselves.

That’s the advantage that we need to take into consideration beyond the money. And the money is an issue, but the wealth of our culture is so rich. I think sometimes we need to lean into that a little bit more and support each other in terms of our communities. That’s really where our wealth lies. Because we don’t have the legacy of wealth that some of these billionaires have, we gotta think about wealth differently in our community and in our society.

So my wealth is having my children be proud of me, having the opportunities that I can help provide for them and for each other.

That’s what I consider wealth.

How do you define Black wealth? This summer we’re collecting stories of Black Chicagoans and compiling a holistic picture of Black generational wealth.

The Obamas’ Personal Trainer Develops Fitness Class for Everyone

Looking to gain Michelle Obama’s arms? Or have you wondered how our 44th President manages to stay slim and fit? Well, the Obamas’ personal trainer for more than 20 years, Cornell McClellan, may be able to help.

You don’t want beginners to believe that they should try in 24 hours to become a runner or a champion or an Olympian. That’s not the goal. 3. Nutritionally, look at how much fluid you take in. How much water did you take in? You can start increasing your water.

Angelica Lewis: Curvy Chick Yoga

In May 2017, Lewis developed Curvy Chick Yoga, a Chicago-based yoga company that specializes in private yoga practice tailored towards full-figured to plus size men, women and children who struggle with the social norm in a traditional yoga studio.

Lewis created her business by learning to conquer past challenges and by fate. Lewis saw herself in a very sunken place when five years ago, she thought the only solution to her traumatic experiences was to end her life.

“I had been out of undergrad for about two years; I was in a stressful career field that I wasn’t happy with, and you know after graduating we have these expectations of having this certain lifestyle after all that hard work. I had been in a 6-year relationship that became intense, and it started to crumble because we were going in different directions.”

Lewis explained that she wanted that career, husband, lifestyle after graduating and at that moment in her life, it

didn’t happen.

Lewis became a vegetarian and went through a holistic lifestyle transition.

Lewis stated, “At the time, I walked away from the field I was working in (Social Work), I walked away from the career, I walked away from the relationship, I had nothing.

I moved in with my sister, I moved back home… It was a lot of things going on… I’ll say when you have all these things happening sometimes taking your life is an option.”

But Lewis stumbled across something that would help her change her mindset, yoga.

“I remember crying out; I prayed a lot, and I would Journal everything. I remember looking back saying ‘okay God I need something to help me with my anxiety and depression and with these feelings of loneliness. I used to take walks on my lunch because it gave me time to be by myself. I remember walking by a yoga studio [I had never heard of or ever considered yoga] I remember saying to myself yeah this looks like a possibility. The next day I came back to the studio. The first week I took classes, I felt energized, I felt renewed, I felt moments of peace, and I wanted more of it.”

yoga as a means to dig her way out of depression, release stress, and manage her anxiety. Yoga allowed her to intertwine a physical and mental practice leading her closer to inner peace in 2013.

Lewis has worked with curvy women, men, and children, leading 60-minute classes with an emphasis on meditation, breathing techniques, mindfulness, and selfstudy. Lung Cancer Screening Guidelines May Not Be Sufficient For High Risk African-Americans

By Deborah Bayliss Defender Contributing Writer University of Illinois at Chicago researchers say current national lung cancer screening guidelines skewed toward White males when they were implemented seven years ago may not be sufficient for high risk African-Americans who not only get lung cancer at a higher rate than other groups, but also are more likely to die from the disease.

Data from the University of Illinois Lung Cancer Screening program provided evidence for the UIC research team.

After looking at current lung cancer screening guidelines that were developed based on the National Lung Screening Trial, or NLST, in 2011, which recommends screening based on age and smoking history, Mary Pasquinelli, a UIC nurse practitioner, and Dr. Lawrence Feldman, an oncologist at the University of Illinois Hospital and professor of clinical medicine in the UIC College of Medicine, found that guidelines may be insufficient for individuals in underrepresented communities.

The 2011 Trial consisted of 4.5 percent of Black patients, 1.8 percent Latino and 90 percent White males, according to the UIC team’s research that was published in JAMA Oncology this month.

UIC’s study group consisted of 500 men and women who received care at the University of Illinois Hospital and

Clinics or UI Health Mile Square Health Center, its network of federally qualified health centers where a large portion of patients who receive care at UI Health live in diverse communities on Chicago’s South and West sides.

Feldman said that comparing the national screening data to screening data from a diverse and urban population, including patients who receive care at federally qualified health centers, provides insights that can help reduce the racial disparities in lung cancer outcomes.

According to researchers, the data illustrates how national screenings are not representative of all people living in the U.S., particularly of minorities because not enough factors are taken into account.

Pasquinelli, lead author of the published data, said guidelines for lung cancer screening should be examined to see if additional risk factors, such as race, a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a close relative with lung cancer and other socioeconomic factors, should be considered along with age and tobacco use when evaluating a person’s eligibility for screening.

“We are a safety net hospital and are really concerned about health disparities,” Pasquinelli said during an interview with the Defender.

Pasquinelli stated in a release that, “We know that screening is effective, but the data show the need to start thinking about more expansive, risk-based screening

guidelines, especially if we want to close the gap when it comes to racial disparities in lung cancer outcomes.

Otherwise, continued use of the screening guidelines that are skewed toward the White population could actually increase racial disparities in outcomes.”

According to the UIC team, the magnitude of the racial disparity increased over the past four decades. Screening programs tailored to high-risk African-Americans and other ethnicities could help reduce the health disparity and save even more lives.

“Immunotherapies and other advances in medicine have come a long way in extending life and improving quality of life for many individuals diagnosed with lung cancer, but those advances mean much less for people living in underserved communities who can’t access or are ineligible for screening programs,” Feldman said. “Screening that is offered based only on age and smoking history may miss a large group of people who are at higher risk due to other factors.”

According to The American Lung Association, African-American men are 22 percent more likely to die from lung cancer than White men.

Pasquinelli and Feldman said more research needs to be done and that the U.S Preventative Services Task Force is an agency that can change the current guidelines as more evidence such as this study emerges.

Congressional Briefing Sheds Light on Latest Prostate Cancer Screening Recommendations Men’s Health Network in collaboration with the Congressional Men’s Health Caucus, Prostate Cancer Task Force, and representatives from the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) converged on Capitol Hill recently for a Congressional Briefing to explain the Task Force’s new prostate cancer screening recommendations to Congressional staff.

The briefing came just a week after the USPSTF issued new recommendations urging men aged 55-69 to consult their health providers on when, or if, they need to be screened for prostate cancer.

“Prostate cancer is a unique cancer. It can be a slow growing cancer—many men who have prostate cancer won’t know unless they get checked,” said Alex Krist, MD, MPH, Vice-Chairperson of the Task Force. “[Screenings] will save a few lives from prostate cancer.”

The Task Force is a government supported panel composed of national medical experts whose recommendations influ-

ence healthcare providers and both public and private insurance coverage decisions.

Preventive screenings rated “A” or “B” by the Task Force are covered by the Affordable Care Act. The latest recommendations are a “C” rating for men aged 55-69 and a “D” rating for men age 70 and above.

The latest rating for men aged 55-69 is an improvement from the Task Force’s 2012 “D” rating for screenings for prostate cancer using the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening test.

“We believe that the new recommendation will encourage men to take a more active role in their health and wellness,” said Ana Fadich, Vice President of Men’s Health Network. “We are hopeful that the Task Force will be more inclusive of men age 70 and older in future recommendations.”

The latest recommendations come more than a year after the Task Force announced its plans to reconsider the rating for PSA screenings. Krist said the USPSTF

used that time to gather more than 600 comments, feedback, and input from medical experts and advocacy groups.

Men’s Health Network suggested that the Task Force issue an “I” (“insufficient evidence”) rating for groups for which there is not now sufficient evidence and data for a stand-alone recommendation.

This would include high-risk groups such as African American men, veterans, and men with a family history of prostate cancer.

During the briefing, medical experts and advocacy groups from the Veterans Health Council, American Urological Association, and Zero, the End of Prostate Cancer urged the Task Force to solicit more research for high-risk groups.

“It is clear that the science is important in the work that we’re doing,” said Darrell Sabbs, a health advocate and legislative affairs and community benefit manager for Phoebe Putney Health Systems. “Prostate cancer can kill but it doesn’t have to kill.

A lot of the data we need has not been found.”

“The ruling, like all rulings, can be very difficult,” said Tom Berger of the Veterans Health Council. “Men exposed to Agent Orange during [the Vietnam War] are at a

higher risk” of prostate cancer.

Other experts applauded the USPSTF for past and current recommendations regarding prostate screenings because it created general guidelines for PSA tests and made providers more aware of overdiagnosis and treatment for the disease.

“The recommendations made us abandon our ‘caveman’ approach,” said Nilay Gandhi, MD, a urologist at Potomac Urology. “It really opened our eyes to overdiagnosis [of prostate cancer]. All of this made us smarter. It’s made us better at detecting more aggressive forms of cancer.”

“Providers, too, need to be educated.

Individual health institutions can play a role in adopting current guidelines,” said Raegan Durant, MD, MPH an associate professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. “Screening is only the beginning.”

There are common misconceptions surrounding senior populations and exercise or strength training. Let’s debunk some of these misunderstandings.

Seniors cannot gain muscle mass.

(FALSE) There is no age limitation on the body’s ability to gain strength or muscle mass.

Resistance training at a higher intensity, above 60 percent of their one repetition maximum, has been shown to cause larger increases in strength in seniors. Strength training can increase the strength, mass, power and quality of muscle as well as improve endurance performance in seniors.

Strength in seniors is important for performance of daily activities and to decrease the risk of falling which is a common cause of injury in this population.

Exercise improves cognitive function.

showed positive results on cognitive functions including memory, reading ability, attention and processing speed in people over the age of 60. The exercise program in these studies included aerobic exercise, strengthening exercises, and stretching at least three days per week. This combination of exercises appears to be the most effective for improving cognitive function.

Strength training in elderly individuals is not safe. (FALSE) There is risk of injury with exercise at any age but there is no evidence that senior populations are at higher risk for injury than other age groups when performing strength training. For any individual beginning a strengthening program, education is important to ensure safety when using weight machines or free weights. Individuals should consider consulting their physician before starting any new exercise program, and should also be cautious about the number of repetitions and amount of resistance for their own safety and recovery after workouts.

Getting motivated to lose weight isn’t a problem for some people.
