City News Free Concert Planned For National Museum of Gospel Music Twelve years ago, a fire gutted the historic Pilgrim Baptist Church, the birthplace of Gospel music. Only the limestone walls remain. But neither this place of worship’s significance in the city nor the legacy of Gospel music will be forgotten. A concert to benefit the museum at the site of Pilgrim will be on Thursday, September 27 at Apostolic Faith Church, 3843 S. Indiana Ave. at 6 p.m. National top gospel artists will pay tribute to the genre in a concert during Gospel Music Heritage Month (September). This homage concert helps support the creation of a National Museum of Gospel Music in Chicago, which will stand as a permanent tribute to the genre’s healing power and history. Hosted by Dr. Bobby Jones and Inspiration 1390 and V103 On Air Host Sonya Blakey; Gospel artists Donnie McClurkin, Kirk Franklin, Marvin Sapp, Travis Greene, Tamela Mann, Anthony Brown, Koryn Hawthorne, Pastor Charles Jenkins, Tasha Cobbs-Leonard, Jekalyn Carr, Ricky Dillard, JJ Hairston, Pastor Smokie Norful, Shirley Caesar, Sir the Baptist and Jonathan McReynolds are scheduled to join others for a concert filled with hope and inspiration. Everyone from throughout the city is invited, including business, community

and elected leaders. Special guests will also include families of victims of violence. The original site of Pilgrim Baptist Church is slated to become the home of the National Museum of Gospel Music. It will serve as more than a place that houses artifacts and collections, says Don Jackson, founder of the Stellar Awards and the Chicago-based Central City Productions Inc. (CCP). The museum, with a planned grand opening in 2020, will cost $40 million to construct. Plans include a performance arts center for youth that also will be a safe haven for them. Just as this mu-
seum will be a boon for the revitalizing Bronzeville community, this concert promises to inspire those who attend to “raise the roof” for a museum celebrating Gospel music’s rich heritage. Tickets to the concert are free and seating is first come, first served. To secure tickets (required), visit Bill Busters at 105 West Madison, Suite 2300 or 10708 South Western Ave Monday thru Friday between 9:00am - 6:00pm. Maximum four tickets per person. For additional information about the museum and the event, visit the museum’s website at http://nationalmuseumofgospelmusic.org.

Celebrate HBCU Week By Katara Patton Defender Senior Editor This week (Sept. 16-22) has been named HBCU Week to bring awareness to Historically Black Colleges and Universities. A national conference was scheduled to convene at the White House and feature HBCU students, administrators and alumni. And the first Black greek-lettered sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc., kicked off the week with HBCU Impact Day, where the sorority’s International President Glenda Glover, who is also president of HBCU Tennessee State University, led a 24-hour charge asking sorority members along with HBCU stakeholders to make contributions. The goal was to raise $1 million for HBCUs on September 17. “HBCUs are deeply woven into the fabric of our country and they need our help,” said Dr. Glenda Glover. “On Sept. 17, our commitment to service focused entirely on historically Black colleges and universities by raising funds to provide the financial support these institutions need to ensure their sustainability.” The many pros of attending an HBCU have been espoused. personal accounts to those documented in the PBS documentary “Tell Them We Are Rising” (see hbcurising.com) that aired earlier this year, HBCUs have a long history of educating African Americans and others. The schools originated back when Black people had limited options for higher education, but in today’s society where all universities are opened to aspiring students, HBCUs still have a prominent place in contemporary Black society. Many famous and successful African Americans are proud graduates of these institutions, where they were often taught by Black Ph.D.s, a source of pride and walking history in and of itself. Oprah
Winfrey is a graduate of Tennessee State, Jesse Jackson earned his undergraduate degree from North Caroline AT&T, Director Spike Lee and Actor Samuel L. Jackson are proud graduates of Morehouse University, Actress Taraji P. Henson and Sean Puffy Combs attended Howard University, and the Fly Jock Tom Joyner graduated from Tuskegee University, to name a few. ety of areas, many students flock to these meccas of Black culture where they can be free from systemic racism for a period of time as they matriculate through college. While some may have at one time thought the education to be subpar, statistics have proven this concept false. Just look at the number of doctors who have attended Xavier University of Louisiana for their undergraduate studies (the college leading the pack in medical school placement for African Americans from any university). And the social scene on these campuses leave nothing to be desired. But as wonderful as “our” schools may be, there are still some realistic cons associated with HBCUS. One of them is funding. Lacking huge endowments like some Predominately White Institutions (PWIs), funding can be challenging at our HBCUS and this impacts of course operating budgets as well as the amount of scholarship awards for the best and brightest to attend. Funding issues can also cause a lack of administrative organization. This fall, a terrible string of stories and comments circulated on social media about the lack of continued on page 4
During the contentious 2016 presidential race between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, voter turnout still proved to be at an alltime low among students who attended Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). In a report released by Tufts University, 2016 voter turnout plummeted by more than 10 points at HBCUs — from 50.5 percent to 39.9 percent. Only two-years after the election of the very controversial and confrontational President Trump, Kamau Marshall, Director of African American Media and Deputy National Press Secretary, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), says that HBCU students are more active and energized to get their vote out and let their voices be heard than ever. Energizing this voting block will make a difference to the outcome of several very important contests this November. “With the Fall semester kicking off, there is a lot of momentum surrounding this very political climate,” Marshall said. “With November elections right around the corner, HBCU students are playing an active and important role when it comes to voting and voter registration.” Believing in hope and the possibility of change, many historically Black institutions across the nation are taking the reins when it comes to increasing voter awareness and registration among their student body. For example, Howard University, located in the heart of the nation’s capital, registered over 1,200 new voters during the month of August. “The more you get involved, the more your voice matters,” Amos Jackson III, president of the Howard Student Government Association (SGA) said. “That’s why it’s a so important for us to heavily promote voter registration. During our August Freshmen move-in day, we were able to register hundreds of new voters.” continued on page 4

housing at Clark Atlanta University. Some students didn’t have housing or did not know their status days before leaving to attend, which made many parents very uncomfortable. Thankfully, HBCU Week and fundraisers like the one started by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. can help raise more money for our institutions, and the more alumni are tuned into the needs of their HBCU, they too will hopefully join the band wagon and give back to the places that nurtured and inspired them. Another way funding and awareness is generated for HBCUs is through sports games, such as the Chicago Football Classic (CFC), which is celebrating its 21st anniversary in Chicago this weekend. This year, the game includes Morehouse University vs. Miles College, the only HBCU in

Birmingham, Ala. However, the focus of the weekend is always on all HBCUs. Bringing the games to cities like Chicago where there are no HBCUs can raise awareness— reminding parents and aspiring students that Black universities are a viable college choice. This week, the Big Game starts at 3:30 p.m., but there’s something to do all day (and weekend) long.
Many celebrated HBCU day at the Cubs game this past Sunday, where alumni and supporters gathered on the North side sporting HBCU wear. A pep rally at Daley Plaza on Thursday, Sept. 20 will feature the drum lines from Miles and Morehouse at noon. The annual golf outing and coaches luncheon happens on Fri-
day, September 21 at Harborside International Golf Center. Participants can network with coaches, sponsors, attendees, HBCU alumni, and CFC founders and supporters. The College Fair is from 9 a.m.noon. All high school students and parents are invited to Soldier Field, 1410 Museum Campus Drive, for the fair. It’s a great place to find
out about all of the HBCUs (and local colleges) out there. Be prepared to ask all of your questions and bring your transcripts—it’s not unheard of for some students to receive on-the-spot acceptance. To preregister or for more information, visit: chicagofootballclassic. org/hbcu-college-fair. The vendor marketplace, a beautiful and creative assortment of products, many of which are from Black vendors, will open at 1:30 p.m. at Soldier Field. It stays open throughout the game. Of course, the day also includes plenty of tail-gating, the much-anticipated Battle of the Bands, and a car raffle (this year a Jeep Wrangler). CFC is a not-for-profit organization founded by businessmen Everett Rand, Tim Rand and Larry Huggins to encourage Black youth to achieve their personal best in school and beyond. The annual CFC is a great way to cap off HBCU week.
HBCU Millennials, continued from, Page 03
“There are a lot of issues up for debate, including higher education costs, gun reform and scholarship budgets, that directly affect millennials,” Jackson continued. “So, when people say that their vote doesn’t count, that’s definitely not true. Your vote matters.” Howard provides both new and returning students valuable information, including handouts on absentee ballots and voter choices. Howard students are also encouraged to sign up for a service known as “TurboVote,” an app that sends notifications about upcoming elections, an initiative whose success comes as no surprise to Marshall. “HBCU students are ready to support whoever has their best interest at heart,” Marshall said. “As an HBCU alum—history shows that HBCU students have always been engaged when it comes to the political process. The difference is always with likable candidates.” In states like Florida and Georgia, HBCU participation is at an alltime high, as students and other citizens eagerly await the hopeful election of productive new governors. In the state of Florida, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, a Democratic, hopes to become the state’s first Black governor in his campaign against Republican Rep. Rob DeSantis. The race will be one of the most closely watched contests this November, since DeSantis has tied himself to President Donald Trump 4 September 19 - 25, 2018

However, Gillum, a firm believer in Medicare for all, has the backing of progressives like Bernie Sanders and the Black community, who were largely responsible for his upset win during the state’s Democratic primary. In the state of Georgia, an Atlanta Journal-Constitution/Channel 2 Action News poll showed that Democrat Stacey Abrams, who is African American, and Republican Brian Kemp are deadlocked in their race at 45 percent
each. Contests like those in Florida and Georgia are ammunition to Michelle Obama’s “When We All Vote,” campaign, which recently announced a series of upcoming “When We All Vote” rallies, targeting students at three HBCUs: Clark Atlanta, Morehouse and Spelman. “There is no time more important than now to be civically engaged and to exercise our right to vote,” Mary Schmidt Campbell, president of Spelman said in a statement. “Spelman students have been registering their classmates to www.chicagodefender.com
vote since August—signing up more than one third of our firstyear class as soon as they stepped on campus. We are excited about the energy and advocacy ‘When We All Vote’ will bring to the Atlanta University Center.” Though off-year elections are often seen as less important than those held during Presidential election cycles, Marshall insists that voting during this time is just as important, particularly for Black millennials. “Voting impacts people’s everyday lives, including the cost of
healthcare, investments in job-creation and community issues like gun violence prevention,” Marshall said. “It’s critical to vote now—in particular—because it’s clear that Republican-controlled Washington is not on the side of regular people, and we need a check and balance.” “It’s not just the President that can impact issues you care about, it’s also Congress,” Marshall continued. “No one can take anything for granted and we need everyone to turn out on November 6th.” THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

The long-negotiated consent decree aimed at reforming the Chicago Police Department practices was filed in federal court last week. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson released a draft consent decree in July but at that time could not come to terms on a provision requiring documentation each time a police officer pointed his/her firearm at a person. With the sticking point now resolved, under the agreement, beginning July 2019, Chicago police officers are required to report when they point their firearm at someone, and the officer’s immediate supervisor must be notified for each incident. Once notified, CPD supervisors must then review the incident to ensure that the officer followed CPD policy and address any misconduct. The agreement also requires that by Jan. 1, 2019, CPD instruct officers on weapons discipline and when officers should and should not point a firearm at a person. New training on when an officer points a firearm must be incorporated in the annual use of force training required under the draft consent decree in 2019. Beginning Jan. 2020, an independent monitor will review any instances an officer points a firearm and recommend any changes to the way the incidents are documented. “Today is an historic day for the City of Chicago,” Madigan said in a press release. “The consent decree is a unique opportunity to achieve real and lasting reform of continued on page 6

Living Well Living with Sickle Cell Anemia: Shauntice Allen By Sharice Bradford Defender Contributing Editor When it comes to having a life altering genetic illness, there are many things that can happen to you. You have options of whether to make the most of your life with the illness or let the illness dictate what type of life you are going to have. As a part of Sickle Cell Awareness Month, the Defender has featured several stories about the disease. In this week’s edition, we talk to college student Shauntice Allen, who has chosen to live life on her own terms and refuses to let the fact that she has Sickle Cell Anemia stop her from following her dreams. SB: When did you first realize that you had an illness? SA: When I was around 2 and had my spleen removed. I remember more after the fact. When I started school and I started missing days and I was in the hospital. Coming back to school, people always wanted to know where I had been and why I hadn’t been in school. Also my mom talked to me about it when I was around 5 or 6, around kindergarten. She knew that other people
would say something to me or about me. She explained what Sickle Cell Disease was and why I have it. She told me other people would treat me differently but she wouldn’t. SB: How does living with SCD affect your daily life? SA: I don’t want to say it affects my life daily. It affects my life when I have a crisis. Doing daily activities is okay for me. When I have a flare up or crisis, I am in a lot of pain. I can’t walk long distances. It can be hard for me to get out of bed especially depending on what part of the body is affected (my arms, legs or chest). SB: How would you describe having a pain crisis? SA: If my crisis is in my chest, it feels like an elephant is sitting on my chest. If the crisis is in my arms or legs, it feels as if someone is hammering constantly on that part of my body. SB: How has living with SCD affected your college life? SA: I sometimes miss a lot of class causing me to do more work. I sometimes miss important exams. I worry a lot about if a teacher will be accommodating. SB: What advice would you give oth-

the Chicago Police Department. The consent decree will support Chicago’s people and police with the goal of promoting safe and effective policing that builds respect and trust between residents and the police.” Under the draft consent decree, Madigan is seeking sustainable reforms of CPD’s policies, practices, training and accountability mechanisms to address discriminatory policing, improve public safety and build trust between CPD and Chicago’s residents. The draft consent decree will ultimately be a court order enforced by a federal judge. The judge will be assisted by an independent monitor, who will continually evaluate CPD’s progress in implementing reforms required by the consent decree until the City of Chicago and CPD achieve “full and effective compliance.” “Today’s consent decree announcement represents our permanent roadmap to improving the quality of service of the Chicago Police Department and implementing systemic improvements for our officers to effectively safeguard our city,” Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said. The proposed decree resolves the complaint Madigan filed Aug. 29, 2017, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois against the city seeking numerous reforms outlined by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) in its investigation of CPD. Madigan filed the complaint after DOJ chose not to pursue Chicago police reform through a consent decree, despite its own recommendation to do so. 6 September 19 - 25, 2018

can get depressed when going through a crisis because I want to do something at that moment and I can’t. I have to realize that once my crisis is over and I am better, I can still do the things I want to do. SB: What is one thing you would like people to know about Sickle Cell Disease? SA: For people who don’t have it, people who have Sickle Cell Disease should not be treated with pity or like they can’t make their own decisions or like a child. Treat them normally. We are normal people. For people with SCD, don’t let it stop you from doing anything you want to do. It is a part of your life, but it doesn’t define you. You have other characteristics. There are things that make you special and unique that have nothing to do with having sickle cell disease. I have a great support system and a mother who instilled in me that I am more than a diagnosis. I had to do dishes and other chores growing up. If I had a crisis, my mom would wait until I felt better and the dishes would still be waiting for me. I am going to continue to do the best and be my best. I am more than a diagnosis. The document includes hundreds of requirements that touch on virtually every aspect of CPD’s operations and contains detailed provisions that address the DOJ-recommended reforms as well as mandates changes that go beyond the DOJ recommendations, along with “unprecedented” transparency in how CPD publishes data regarding use of force incidents and a significant expansion of support services provided to CPD officers. “This agreement, reflecting the voices and values of Chicago will help create lasting reform at the Chicago Police Department and safer communities across the city,” said Mayor Emanuel. “I want to commend everyone who stepped forward, worked diligently and shared their experiences and expertise to help us reach this inflection point for Chicago police reform.” The federal judge overseeing the case will review the proposed consent decree and provide additional opportunities for the public to comment to the federal court. Once final, the independent monitor appointed by the federal judge will evaluate and report to the court on CPD’s progress in implementing the reforms required under the consent decree. The assessments by the independent monitor of CPD’s progress and the oversight of CPD by the federal court will continue until the federal judge finds that the city has achieved full and effective compliance with the consent decree’s requirements. The full draft consent decree, as well as the draft provision on documenting when police officers point a firearm at someone, can be viewed at Madigan’s police reform website, www.chicagopoliceconsentdecree.org. Living Well Bronzeville Resident Advocates for HIV/AIDS Awareness By Deborah Bayliss Defender Contributing Writing Bronzeville resident Lauryn Scott has heard some outrageous beliefs about how a person contracts HIV/AIDS. Her aim as an awareness advocate with the AIDS Foundation of Chicago is to dispel as many myths as possible while erasing the stigmas associated with the disease. “People are still not educated about HIV/AIDS, especially in the Black community where the subject is often taboo or they think it can’t happen to them,” said Scott, who was impacted by the virus after losing her father to AIDS when she was just four years old. Widely referred to by its acronym, the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) affects cells in the immune system. Once enough of those cells are destroyed by HIV, the body is less able to fight infections or disease. If left untreated, HIV can Lauryn Scott lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), according to information on the AIDS Foundation of Chicago website. Scott said her father never told his family about his AIDS diagnosis. “My mother found out while he was in the hospital dying,” Scott said. “I remember visiting my father every day in the hospital and being confused about why he wasn’t coming back home.” It was years later that Scott found out her father died from AIDS. “We were being nosy kids and went rambling through my mom’s file cabinet when we found his death certificate. I remember reading the words ‘acquired immune deficiency syndrome’ but not knowing what they meant,” Scott said. “Then I looked at each letter until I saw that it spelled out ‘AIDS’. I was shocked and asked my mother about it when she got home. She was upset that we had gone through her things without her permission but was honest about her reason for not telling us the truth. My mom is a registered nurse who had worked with HIV and AIDS patients in the ’80s in Los Angeles and knew the stigma that revealing my father’s diagnosis would bring. She gave my brother and me the choice to tell people the truth and accept the consequences or hide behind the fabricated story of him having brain cancer.” It wasn’t until the end of high school that Scott tested the waters and told people the truth about her dad, which led to mixed reactions so she again decided to THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
keep her secret to herself. “In college, I started volunteering for an AIDS organization where we provided a food pantry for people living with HIV,” Scott said. “I was slowly beginning to test the waters to see how comfortable I felt telling people the reason I volunteered, and the more I said it was because my dad died of an AIDS-related illness, the more I grew to accept it myself.” Scott’s message is for everyone to take the necessary precautions and ask your doctor for an HIV test. “It’s a test that you have to ask your doctor for,” Scott said. “Once you get tested follow-up with your doctor for the results and then get tested every six months. It’s a serious disease that should not be taken lightly. We will be testing during the AIDS Foundation Walk/Run event. Our theme this year is ‘Live True and Be You.’ Even though I, myself, do not have HIV/AIDS, I share my story because I was impacted by it.” Currently, there is no cure for HIV. There are, however, effective treatments known as antiretroviral therapy or ART. ART is recommended for everyone who has HIV, as it can dramatically prolong the lives of many people living with HIV and lower their chance of transmitting the virus to others. In terms of prevention, along with using proper protection, Scott said the Pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP pill offers protection from the virus and is a way for people who do not have HIV to prevent HIV infection. She stressed the pill has to be taken every day to be effective. She stressed further that people talk to a doctor for more information about it. Scott is also working to make sure HIV/AIDS awareness information reaches the Black community and hopes that the information is heeded and not ignored. Scott invites everyone to the AIDS Foundation’s (AFC) 17th annual Walk/ Run event that will take place at Soldier Field from 9 a.m. to noon, Sunday, September 23. Funds from the event are raised for AFC and 34 Community Direct partners. Proceeds will benefit programs and services for Chicagoans living with and vulnerable to HIV. For more information or to register for the event, call the Run & Walk hotline at (312) 334-0946 or the AIDS Foundation main line at (312) 922-2322. Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky and Mike Perform to Sold-Out Chicago Crowd By Renee Matthews Defender Contributing Writer Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, and Mike descended on Chicago for a one-night stop on their tour. Those names may ring familiar because they are four of the six members of popular group New Edition. These boys turned men from Boston will be on tour until November. The 9-week tour started in Ontario, California, on September 6, 2018. While the group was in Chicago this week, The Defender sat down with the four members to find out what fans can look forward to. RBRM In the past, there was Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant, BBD (Bell, Biv, and DeVoe) and Heads of State (Bobby, Ralph and Johnny). RBRM came to be when BBD (Bell, Biv, DeVoe) were preparing to go on tour and Bobby Brown was planning a tour after his movie. It just so happened that the four of their names always went together on any New Edition song that called the names out so they decided to call the newest edition of the group RBRM, an acronym for their first names. The guys decided it would be great to tour together and be on stage together with one band. Brown said he was excited to sing “Do Me, “Poison” and “Dope” (all BBD songs) and Ricky Bell shared a little-known fact that Brown’s hit “Every Little Step” was supposed to be for New Edition but somehow Brown got the song-- and Bell always wanted to sing it. Brown said about the tour, “We are living like kids again; we are just having fun.” NE 40th Anniversary September 10, 2018, was the 40th Anniversary of New Edition and the week before that the world watched “The Bobby Brown Story” on BET for two nights. Just like the “New Edition Story,” this movie received record viewership. When asked about the next New Edition tour to celebrate 40 years, Ronnie DeVoe, who turned 50 last year, said: “That is the million dollar question that they don’t ultimately have the answer to and it’s in God’s time.” Future The future for Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, and Mike is very bright. These guys will not stop anytime soon. While here in Chicago, they completed a song that will be on an RBRM collective album. There have been discussions about a residency somewhere for the group. BBD is working on a book about their story that will ultimately become a movie. There will also be new BBD music as they prepare for the 30th anniversary of BBD in 2020. Bell recently released a single with his wife Amy called “Gold.” They have another single about to be released and then eventually there will be an album. He has Bobby Brown Foods and is making more marinades, sauces and seasonings. Brown has lost 60 pounds and attributes that to the use of his seasonings. The Browns also have television productions on the horizon. Family The one thing that all of the guys mentioned was how difficult it is leaving their families to go on tour. Bivins said he leaves early in the morning and kisses them while they are sleep. But when he gets home, Wednesday, September 26, 2018 it is like a holiday. THIS IS NOT AN OPPORTUNITY FOR NEW APPLICANTS TO APPLY FOR HOUSING Notice of Persons Appearing to Be Covered by the Relocation Rights Contract Kenny Ingram (Daddy Johann Sebastian Brubeck)
Sweet Charity Does Not Disappoint By Rick and Brenda McCain Let’s Play Going out to the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire is a long commute for us, however each time we’ve made this trip, we’ve been blessed to see some great theatrical plays, and “Sweet Charity” is another one that ranks as worth traveling to see. “Sweet Charity” is a musical written by the great American playwright, screenwriter, and author Neil Simon. Simon’s list of impressive Broadway plays reads like a who’s who with amazing plays like “Barefoot in the Park,” and his Tony Award play “The Odd Couple.” “Sweet Charity,” which is the story that is based on the screenplay for the Italian film called Nights of Cabiria, where a prostitute searches for love, however, the American version of this play is centered on a dancer for hire. Directed and Choreographed by Alex Sanchez, “Sweet Charity” focuses on Charity’s courage, optimism and epiphanies throughout her life to show her positive outlook regarding life. The story is of a young intuitive, often plagued by simple occurrences. Her name is Charity Hope Valentine, played by Anne Horak. Horak is very believable as Charity, the young girl looking for love who goes through the ups and seemingly more downs in life. Your heart will root for her and will cry when life throws her a few curve0 balls. Charity, the sweet love-starved and hopeless romantic dance hall hostess, is determined to change her life after being used by a former boyfriend. Joined by a cast of characters at the Fandango Ballroom, Horak as Charity was delightful and entertaining. Her ever optimistic and somewhat dingy personality played well as Charity, and even her singing and dancing were reasonably pleasing although a little awkward at times. Her performance brought the high energy, humor and the right amount of heartbreaking sadness to make you eager to see if Charity would ever find love on a two-way street. Director Sanchez also does an excellent job with the casting of this play. The great dancers and performers made you feel like you were back in the ’60s reliving the hay days of Sweet Charity. It also doesn’t hurt when you bring in Kenny Ingram, known for his role in “The Lion King,” to play the role of the enigmatic leader of the Rhythm of Life Church, Big Daddy Brubeck. Ingram’s magnetic personality and soulful voice brings life to this portion of the play and makes you want to THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

see and hear more from him. You can only hope Ingram stays in Chicago and graces us with his theatrical skills. We truly enjoyed the dance performances and the harmony of the classic songs like “Big Spender” and “There’s Got To Be Something Better,” with NaTonia Monet (Helene) and Dani Spiler (Nickie), which were spot-on. Kudos goes to Monet and Spiler for their performances in this play as well as to Terry Hamilton as Herman. Horak did a number of songs and dance performances and her “If My Friends Could See Me Now,” was charming, but the top performance goes to Alex Goodrich. Goodrich’s portrayal of Oscar was priceless! His performance in the elevator is worth a ticket for admission itself and the elevator scene still has us laughing. The relationship and bond that Horak and Goodrich form in “Sweet Charity” is captivating, humorous and ultimately have you walking away feeling a little sad and heartbroken, but hey, that’s what good acting will do; and they both work their magic in this play. Let’s Play highly recommends taking the trip to Lincolnshire’s Marriott Theatre to see “Sweet Charity.” The Cast Includes: Anne Horak (Charity Hope Valentine) Liam Quealy (Charlie, Manfred, Mike) Elyse Collier (Woman with Hat) Alex Smith (Football Player) Liam Quealy, Joe Bigelow (Policeman) Dani Spieler (Nickie) NaTonia Monet (Helene) Terry Hamilton (Herman) Alexandra Palkovic (Ursula) Adam Jacobs (Vittorio Vidal) Kyra Sorce (YMCA Receptionist) Alex Goodrich (Oscar Limdquist) Kenny Ingram (Daddy Johann Sebastian Brubeck) Liam Quealy, Adam Rogers (Brothers) Lexis Danca (Rosie) To read an interview with Ingram, visit chicagodefender.com

What I Learned About Forgiveness By Elle Smith 12 Voices Speaking from personal experience, the whole concept of forgiveness was something that made me absolutely crazy, and I didn’t reElle Smith ally apply it until I was in my 30s...because I had absolutely no choice. I thought that holding a grudge was going to make the other person “feel” my hold on the grudge.
I suffered with so many different things as a result of holding on to that grudge. Sleepless nights, headaches, loss of appetite, weight loss, and the list goes on and on. It wasn’t until I made a conscious decision to sit down and think about what was really going on with me, that I started to feel better. I realized that while I was hurting, the person that I was holding a grudge against was more than likely sleeping quite well at night. Want to know how I conquered the concept of forgiveness? Here you go… 1. PRAYER. The person who I was angry with really did a number on my heart, and it took me some time to get over everything that had happened in that situation. But
I tell you what...praying, journaling, and sitting still helped me to lift that burden off of my shoulders. I legit started to feel better when I talked out loud to God, my source of strength, about my struggles. 2. GIVING MYSELF PERMISSION TO LET IT GO. Hear me. I had beat myself up long enough over the fact that for years, I had spent my life doing what I thought would yield me the result that I wanted, but it took a “close call” that woke me all the way up, letting me know that it wasn’t the result that I needed. Once I figured out that I was given a second, third, even a millionth chance to see what God was trying to say to me, I had to “let it go.” Once I forgave myself for what I thought was a “waste of my time,” I was able to
freely accept what I was supposed to learn—“if it doesn’t freely open, it’s not your door.” 3. FORGIVENESS REALLY IS FOR ME. I had to go through the motions with that painful ordeal; I had to go through the sleepless nights, headaches, loss of appetite, etc., to realize that to forgive someone means to “free someone.” You free them; you free yourself. You forgive them for whatever it is, you ALSO forgive yourself. It’s a strange phenomenon, but forgiveness is for YOUR freedom. And they never have to know that you have forgiven them...because if they happen to “check up” on you, they will find that you proceeded to live without them. Once I forgave the individual who caused the pain in my own life, I
started a Digital Marketing firm, started getting called for speaking engagements, and received so many opportunities that were being blocked because of the grudge I was holding. I never want to block my own blessings so I have to forgive in order to receive what is due to me! So who is forgiveness REALLY for? YOU. Don’t think that you have to suffer just because the situation may hurt. Be intentional about the decision to forgive. Trust me; it works. The Kingdom Kees to Genius: Unlocking the Mind of Christ Within You By Reggie and Quiana Kee 12 Voices This article is an excerpt from Minister Reggie Kee’s most recently released b o o k : Common Genius, Uncomm o n D e s t i ny : Un l o cking the Genius Reggie and within Quiana Kee You. Genius, as redefined in this book, is readily accessible to anyone as a non-academic attribute based on a combination of one’s PASSION, TALENT and PURPOSE. Our purpose (or destiny) in life is to identify our God-given talent and apply it to our passion which is directly tied to what each of us was meant to fix in a world full of brokenness. “Your talent is God’s gift to you. What you do with it is your gift back to God.” – Leo Buscaglia What’s the best thing to get when something is broken? Whether it’s something as simple as a chair or as complex as a 12 September 19 - 25, 2018
Likewise, your talent (or gift) is your tool. Though I’ve come across many people who claim to have no talent, I contend that anyone who says this is in self-denial. Either that, or they just haven’t fully explored the possibilities beyond the hang-ups of fear and failure. car, the answer is somebody else. No… wait… that’s not right! Some of us may actually get a carpenter or a mechanic to fix a chair or car and that’s okay – this is a judgment-free zone! But even carpenters and mechanics need tools to fix what’s broken. They can’t merely walk into a room and magically correct your faulty possessions. I don’t care how much training or experience they have, you would be hard-pressed to find a carpenter or mechanic who can fix what you bring to them without at least ONE tool. Likewise, your talent (or gift) is your tool. Though I’ve come across many people who claim to have no talent, I contend that anyone who says this is in self-denial. Either that, or they just haven’t fully explored the possibilities beyond the hang-ups of fear and failure. These F-bombs quench the very nature of passion – leaving those who revel in them cursed from ever coming close to living out
what they were meant to do in and with their lives. I’d like to reinforce the concept of God-given talent with a parable from the Bible. God’s Word is amazing in that it is often rife with double entendre, or rather, words and phrases with two meanings. In fact, it is self-ascribed as being sharper than a two-edged sword (see Hebrews 4:12). One of the greatest examples of this supernatural blacksmithing is the parable of the talents found in Matthew 25:14-28. Though the word “talent” used here refers to a measure of weight (similar to how we describe diamonds in carats), the parallel here is striking. In the story, a king gives three of his servants different portions of talents “according to their abilities.” The king goes on a journey, but upon his return, he checks in to see what his servants have managed to do with the portions they were given. The servants with www.chicagodefender.com
five and two talents double them to ten and four, respectively. The king affectionately calls them “good and faithful servants” and instructs them to enter into his rest. The last one, though… Fs it up, royally. Rather, he allows fear and failure to prevent him from even trying to do anything constructive as he opts to simply bury the talent in the ground. When he presents this dusty talent to the king without a single return on his investment, the king affectionately (or rather, passionately) calls him “wicked and slothful” and throws him out into the darkness where there will be “weeping and gnashing of teeth.” To make it plain, the unprofitable servant didn’t know the talent of his genius (several abilities). Putting his talent in the earth gave the king no return on his investment, which is a no-no with a “capital” N (don’t miss the wordplay there!) for any investor. God is very much a King and very much
an Investor in us. He has given us a portion of His talents/gifts to terraform the earth back into the reflection of heaven it was meant to be. That may sound odd to hear but it may seem more familiar in its normal form – as heard in the one-liner of what is often called the model prayer: “on earth as it is in heaven.” We delay this process when we take His talent and only present it back to Him with an earthly return. As the true owner of said talent, He reserves the right to have a pretty passionate response when we waste it; even though the world, as currently run (into the ground) by the devil, rewards us handsomely for doing so. So with all that said… what is YOUR talent? Reggie and Quiana Kee have known each other for over 20 years and were married in 2004. They were licensed to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ in 2015 at the Kingdom Advancement Center in Elgin, Ill., where they currently reside. They have two children and are the co-founders of Ink Well Spoken and Manu Forti Ministries, which serve as the marketplace and faith-based programs for their motivational speaking initiatives.
