fight was not in vain. Chicago made history. Van Dyke is going to prison and Laquan lives through all of us affected by his death. Next are the aldermen and the mayor.

The community has to get out and vote. The people united can never be defeated.

This is a big step in the right direction. Chicago made history.

This will make officers all over the United States think twice before taking a life. Now we wait for the sentencing, which is another hurdle to get past.

Cosette Hampton Hampton is a former BYP100 Chicago Chapter Co-Chair and among the first to march in the streets when the McDonald footage dropped.

Officer Jason Van Dyke murdered Laquan McDonald in 2014 and shot him 16 times. He was guilty in 2014, I don’t need affirmation from Illinois courts 4 years later to know that. I’m angry that Laquan McDonald’s family had to suffer for 4 years, reliving the trauma of their teenage loved one being gunned down in a rage. They should not have had to witness the FOP laugh in their faces by hiring Van Dyke after his suspension from CPD, and even now after the verdict, hearing the FOP President’s statement threatening and calling people they are supposed to be protecting “perpetrators.”

A second-degree charge is a spit in the face, but even a first-degree charge is not true accountability when it won’t bring back all the Black people who have been killed by police, free others from prison, or erase Scarlett letter convictions.

Jason Van Dyke is one police officer who deserves all the bad things coming to him and then some, but he is a scapegoat for an entire system of lawmakers, policy analysts, judges, and officers who constantly get away with killing, hurting, and traumatizing Black people.

When the verdict came that Jason Van Dyke had been convicted of all counts except for the misconduct, my first thought was that it isn’t over and there’s more to be done. If it has to take our children to fight the fight – that we left – with years and years to come, then so be it.

Cosette Hampton Jedidiah Brown, Founder of the Young Leaders Alliance The self-described “Chicago Freedom Fighter” from South Shore had a change of heart about the mayor after seeing organizations respond to the Laquan’s video. Since then, Brown has participated in countless marches and press conferences demanding peace.

Every generation has seen something once thought impossible. I’m honored to be living in this one, where a demonized Black child gets justice after being slaughtered by a hateful White policeman. The right message has been sent to the law enforcement community concerning accountability. As we now press to finalize justice in the city council and the next two elections, I’m eager to see the healing begin in my community. I honor William Calloway and Brandon Smith for not looking the other way because the cover-up wouldn’t have ever become a conviction without them.

LaCreisha Birts, Activist/Organizer Birts was a member of BYP 100 and the CAARPR (Chicago Alliance Against Racial and Political Repression) in 2015. Birts has been fighting for community control of the police.

While I’m grateful that Van Dyke was convicted, I do not feel safe or reassured by the verdict.

If Van Dyke who shot Laquan SIXTEEN times couldn’t be charged and convicted with first-degree murder, what precedent does this set for other cops who murder civilians?

Ja’Mal Green Green appeared on many mainstream news outlets and lead actions at City Hall, the Taste of Chicago, and in front of Emanuel’s home in Ravenswood.

The Van Dyke verdict proves that ordinary citizens are tired of people we trust with power abusing their positions. This represents a shift in the landscape of Chicago where people who were previously untouchable will now be held accountable for their actions including every politician involved. It is now up to the judge to make sure he sends a message to any other rogue cop that Black lives matter, not just Blue ones.”

Joan Fadayiro, Co-founder, Cooperation for Liberation Study & Working Group Fadayiro hit the streets for Laquan and organized community meetings after the dash cam video was released. She was an active participant in the #ByeAnita direct actions.

First, I want to lift up Laquan McDonald and his loved ones, family and friends. Although through heinous circumstances, Laquan has been able to put his family in a better position financially--which for poor, Black people in this city, this country, that matters.

Laquan put this city in a better place--primarily for young, Black men struggling to lead full lives in the face of state violence. We are forever grateful!

Personally, I have a hard time celebrating until the sentencing.

What this verdict means seems unclear until then. However, the verdict does feel like a victory for Black people and anyone who believes in the right of Black people to live freely.

Lamon Reccord Black folks and allies, youth and elders. Organizers centering young, Black women, femmes and queer folks took the lead and sacrificed it all. It’s important to remember what this moment cost us--as every victory for Black people and oppressed people around the world does. We lost one of the most powerful youth organizations in this city--Fearless Leading by the Youth (FLY). Many youth organizers have faced financial insecurity, isolation and mental and physical complications. And many have lost hope along the way. Let us remember this and do what we can to heal ourselves and our community with love and integrity.

America In 2015, Reccord teamed with Ja’Mal Green and others to put pressure on Rahm Emanuel. There are viral videos and pictures where Reccord stares down police.

There is no #JusticeForLaquan until Rahm Emanuel, Anita Alvarez, Garry McCarthy and every officer who lied is convicted and incarcerated. The Black Caucus has failed the black community. Every Alderman of that Caucus should not have another term! The verdict of Van Dyke isn’t a win for Chicago, it’s an indicator that we have more fighting to do.

Community Mayoral Candidate Interview: Neal Sáles-Griffin

By Charles Preston Defender Contributing Writer Neal Sáles-Griffin walks into the Chicago Defender building with an optimistic bounce, casually dressed wearing a “Made In A Chicago Hood” jacket, and consistently flashing a captivating smile.

You get the sense that he holds importance but cannot articulate why. The 31-year-old tech entrepreneur believes he has what it takes to become Chicago’s next mayor, despite a field that boasts many of the city’s political elite.

“Where has that gotten us?

Where have all these experienced and seasoned politicians gotten us?” asks Sáles-Griffin. “We got more of them. Okay? Great.”

As one of the youngest mayoral candidates, Sales-Griffin says he represents “change,” “innovation,” “youth,” “energy,” and “integrity;” his resume leaves little room for doubt that he is lying.

When the Mt. Carmel High School cornerback’s NFL dreams paused due to injury, he redirected his focus on a future away from sports.

He graduated from Northwestern University with a Learning and Organizational Change degree while working as Associate Student Government President. At the age of 21, Sáles-Griffin served as the chief operating officer for Flawless Cuts Barbershop, managing two locations on the South Side of Chicago. He taught himself how to code software leading to co-founding the first ever coding boot camp, creating a blueprint that influenced a nationwide millennial coding movement; Sáles-Griffin was 24 years old.

“When I first got my start doing programming and computer science, I built a clone of Twitter,” says Sáles-Griffin. “This was 8 years ago. Anyone who is interested, or wants to learn how to build software, the first thing I have them do is build the original Twitter app. “ Although his extensive resume is full of leadership positions and reads unconventional for a political candidate, the simple truth is that many voters are unfamiliar with Sáles-Griffin’s backstory.

Who is this confident, young Black man running for mayor?

He is Afro-Latino, making him the first and only Black and Latino candidate pursuing the mayoral seat. “My Grandfather is Filipino.

“She raised my Mother and her seven brothers and sisters in Englewood and Roseland. They had a tough time growing up in mostly Black neighborhoods. They struggled with their identities as Latino South Siders.”

Sáles-Griffin’s paternal family provides great contrast. His father, Anthony Griffin, is a Black man who experienced Jim Crow racism. He remembers his father would tell him “... stories growing up being called n*gger going down the street.” Anthony Griffin served as a Chicago Police officer for 30 years while Linda Sáles, his mother, worked in CPS for 17 years.

Like many in Chicago, Sáles-Griffin is a product of lower-middle-class beginnings. “At the age of 5, I was living with my

dad – who was a cop. My mom was trying to get back into work,” Sáles-Griffin explains.

“She worked at Michael Reese hospital, but then she decided to work at CPS as a special education teaching assistant at Ray Elementary.”

Sáles-Griffin says his upbringing informs his political positions as well as his decision to run for office. He claims to approach each of the city’s issues on their own terms, rather than relying on dominant ideologies such as “liberal” or “conservative.”

However, he does have political ties. Sáles-Griffin declined an invitation to work on then-President Obama’s 2012 campaign as a project manager and opted to build a coding school with his friend Mike McGee. He personally knows J.B. Pritzker and happily introduced the gubernatorial candidate at the Pritzker campaign launch. He even had an hourlong conversation with www.chicagodefender.com

Yet Sáles-Griffin holds firm that he represents a bold new change and not the traditional Chicago Democratic flashback. In fact, he speaks against the Democratic machine and the amount of money in current political campaigns.

Sáles-Griffin asserts, “I’m not interested in limited or incremental

progress. Right now, management of the Chicago machine from another traditionally-experienced political operative is not what is best for the city. “ Sáles-Griffin thinks Chicago’s machine politics has caused the city to move at a snail’s pace addressing the socioeconomic plight burdening the South and West sides. According to him, this slow momentum stagnates people’s care and investment in Chicago’s politics, leading to poor voter turnout. He believes faith must be restored into potential voters rather than vote-shaming –– the tactic of blaming non-voters for non-participation.

“Most of us are disconnected,” laments Sáles-Griffin. “We have over 70 percent of us who are old enough to vote but don’t.

It’s not just about voting. I’m not for vote shaming. I actually detest that there is this approach where people are told that they are bad or wrong for not [voting]. I think it’s more important to understand why they should have a reason and making sure people are connected to that. “ On the issues, Sáles-Griffin is considerably a Democratic progressive, championing social justice and demanding universal health care. His platform priorities listed on his website (nealformayor.com) are affordable housing, public safety, government accountability, and education. If elected, he says he will tackle the city’s budget on his first day to make sure Chicago’s $22 Billion is going where it’s needed.

Neal Sáles-Griffin wants voters to recognize that he is a regular 31-year-old Chicagoan who enjoys listening to Lil’ Wayne (He highly anticipated the artist’s long-awaited “The Carter 5” album) and is willing to go through great lengths to enact systemic changes. He asks not to be labeled.

As he so eloquently puts it: “I don’t fit into any boxes. I’m just a guy who gives a sh*t.”

We’re giving area residents access to training to provide basic skills awareness and development for what AT&T expects for key entry-level roles. We are bringing “AT&T Learn,” a skills readiness virtual learning platform, to provide basic training for skills development, such as learning how to write a resume, interviewing, making a presentation, and other foundational skills. This platform will also help job candidates become more aware of some of our in-demand jobs and the skills needed for such roles. The education efforts that are part of Believe Chicago are part of our broader commitment to

workers to prepare for the future and the changing job market, both inside and outside AT&T. Residents can access AT&T Learn now via the Believe Chicago Website (www.BelieveChicago.com) and/ or via our AT&T Jobs Websites (www.att.jobs).

CD: How does AT&T believe that Believe Chicago can help combat violence in these particular communities?

AT&T is a company that has the resources to help make a difference in these communities.

We want to improve lives and lift Chicago neighborhoods that have suffered due to negative elements like gun violence and high unemployment. We know AT&T alone can’t stop the violence in Chicago. That’s not our goal. Instead, we’re working with employees and community leaders to address some root causes by promoting hiring, training, and opportunity – and making sure the good news gets out along the way. The hardworking committee was lead by Chairman Tonya Lyles Mattox and Co-Chairman Kimberly Egonmwan. The AKArama Foundation, Inc. is committed to delivering and sustaining community-based programs of excellence. The entertainment was provided by a fantastic band, “The Midnight Sun Band.” I could not tell when the band ended and the DJ began! The guests also enjoyed the Casino set up in the lobby. I was honored and humbled as I received an award on behalf of Carolyn’s Kids Foundation from True Star. The event was held in the Leo Burnett building. Thank you to True Star Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides a creative outlet in the form of literary, media arts, and professional development programs for predominately minority male and female youth, ages 11-21, in the metropolitan Chicago Deanna McLearyarea. Let’s Eat: Ms. T’s Southern Fried Chicken

By The Black Foodies Folks can stew, boil, broil, braise, barbecue, grill or sauté chicken; however, fried chicken is, by far, the most popular preparation of the yardbird in America. Ever since Scottish immigrants introduced their tradition of deep frying chicken in fat to the American South, fried chicken has become a staple in American cuisine. There are numerous fried chicken franchises catering to the lovers of this southern classic, and everyone has their own spin on how to prepare it. Ms. T’s Southern Fried Chicken, located at 3343 North Broadway in the Lakeview East Community on Chicago’s North Side, is doing fried chicken the locals are raving about. Nita Tanner, Owner of Ms. T’s Southern Fried Chicken, has a menu that is a fried food lover’s dream.

Up first for sampling was Ms. T’s popular Southern Fried Chicken. Miss Coretta and I ordered dark meat. The crunch factor was definitely there – no soggy chicken skin here. The chicken was well seasoned – not overly so – allowing the chicken flavor to be at the forefront. The interior was moist and delicious, the final result a very traditional, old-school fried chicken that pays homage to an era of fried chicken that would make any grandma proud. With the fried chicken came Fried Corn on the cob.

Corn cobbettes are deep fried and seasoned with seasoned salt and other seasonings, creating corn fit for a king. When you visit Ms. T’s Southern Fried Chicken, the fried corn is a must try.

For you catfish connoisseurs, Ms. T’s has an impressive Catfish Meal. Three huge fillets are dredged in seasoned cornmeal and fried to perfection. While eating this succulent fillet, a slow heat crept onto our palettes that only added an extra lay-

The fresh tartar sauce that accompanied the catfish was top-flight as well, with a pucker factor that made it the perfect condiment for superbly prepared fried catfish. We tried Fried Biscuits with our meal, and “good Lawdy” were they tasty. The biscuits were reminiscent of some good, old-fashioned Hungry Jacks, flaky and infused with butter and honey.

This guilty pleasure had us wanting more.

There are chicken sandwiches and then there is Ms. T’s Southern Fried Chicken’s chicken sandwich. Two huge chicken tenders are fried flawlessly, nestled in a fresh bun with house-made honey mustard sauce, olive oil infused mayonnaise, with fresh tomato and lettuce. This mammoth sandwich is a gut-buster, undeniably one of the better chicken sandwiches that we have eaten. We suggest having it cut in half, because this sandwich is meant to be shared.

On the Scene 2018 Carolyn Adams Ticket for the Cure Unveiled as Part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month The Illinois Lottery recently unveiled the 2018 Carolyn Adams Ticket for the Cure at a ticket launch event at the Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Task Force.

The ticket is named in honor of the former Illinois Lottery Superintendent (2003-2007) Carolyn Adams, who fought her battle with breast cancer until 2007. Each of the special lottery tickets costs $3 and prizes range from $5 to $50,000.

Since 2006, the Ticket for the Cure has raised more than $12.5 million to support breast cancer research, awareness and education in Illinois. Illinois was the first lottery in the U.S. to launch an instant game to support the fight against breast cancer. One hundred percent of profits generated from ticket sales are distributed by Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), which awards grants to medical research centers and community organizations across Illinois that work to find a cure or aid those fighting breast cancer.

More than 1,800 women in Illinois die from breast cancer each year, according to IDPH. The Carolyn Adams Ticket for the Cure will hopefully help to decrease that number.

October Fall Season TV Premieres

By Marshelle Sanders Defender Contributing Writer It is time for some of TV’s famously Fall TV season and series premieres for the month of October. Are you finding it hard to keep track with TV shows? Many of us have busy lives so we don’t even get a chance to turn on the television anymore.

Today many people subscribe to internet streaming services so that they can catch their favorite shows at anytime (Netflix, Hulu, Comcast, Amazon etc.]. To keep up with what is on, we’ve compiled some of the top TV Show series and seasonal premieres that are returning and debuting in October.

Tuesdays The Flash Season 5 Started Oct. 9, at 8/7c on CW It’s not everyday your twentysomething daughter who hasn’t been born yet speeds into your life, so Barry (Grant Gustin) and Iris (Candice Patton) will have their hands full figuring out how to be parents to a kid who’s already grown up (and has a super suit of her own!) On the villain front, Season 5 will introduce Cicada, a blue-collar man of Central City whose family was torn apart by meta-humans. Now, he’s on a mission to destroy the “epidemic,” one meta-human at a time.

Black Lightning Season 2 Started Oct. 9, at 9/8c on CW The feud between Black Lighting (Cress Williams) and Tobias Whale is still very much on, but this time our hero has got Thunder (Nafessa Williams) by his side full-time to help fight the forces of evil in Freeland. Unfortunately, Khalil (Jordan Calloway) is still fighting for the wrong side, which should make things with Jennifer (China McClain) and her burgeoning powers interesting. Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) made his choice: he hung up the suit and his secret identity years ago, but with one daughter hell-bent on justice and the other a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’ll be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend Black Lightning.

The Conners (NEW) Season 1 Oct, 16, at 8/7c on ABC This sitcom is moving on without Roseanne (remember what she said?). This Roseanne spin-off, created to salvage fans’ feelings, iconic characters and the working professionals burnt in Roseanne Barr’s firing, will likely premiere with Roseanne dead, Dan (John Goodman) moping because she’s dead, and presumably more of the same working-class, Midwestern blues stuff as before. There will be an unexpected pregnancy, ABC says, which promises some drama, although nothing producers could ever write could possibly THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Black-ish Season 5 Oct. 16, at 9/8c on ABC Creator and executive producer Kenya Barris may have left ABC for Netflix, but the bones of black-ish will remain the same as the family takes on new challenges in the new season. Andre (Anthony Anderson) and Bo (Tracee Ellis Ross) are back in a good space; twins Jack (Miles Brown) and Diane (Marsai Martin) are heading to middle school; and Junior (Marcus Scribner) changes his mind about going to Howard and instead will take a gap year at home.

The Rookie (NEW) Season 1 Oct. 16, at 10/9c on ABC Castle star Nathan Fillion is returning to ABC as a 40-year-old rookie LAPD officer in this new series. The series is a fast-paced mix of drama, comedy and high-octane action. Starting over isn’t easy, especially for small-town guy John Nolan who, after a life-altering incident, is pursuing his dream of being an LAPD officer. As the force’s oldest rookie, he’s met with skepticism from some higher-ups who see him as just a walking midlife crisis. If he can’t keep up with the young cops and the criminals, he’ll be risking lives including his own. But if he can use his life experience, determination and sense of humor to give him an edge, he may just become a success in this new chapter of his life.

Wednesdays All American (NEW) Season 1 Oct. 10, at 9/8c on the CW The series follows Coach Billy Baker (Taye Diggs) and Spencer (Daniel Ezra), a talented football player who is yanked out of his Crenshaw high school to play for the more affluent Beverly Hills team. The show is based on the real-life story of Spencer Paysinger.

Riverdale Season 3 Oct. 10 at 8pm on The CW Archie (KJ Apa) will spend the show’s third season fighting for his freedom against a tough new district attorney who is out to make an example of him. That’s going to put a lot of stress on his relationship with Veronica (Camila Mendes), who still lives with Hiram, the man responsible for all her misery. Hopefully running a speakeasy will help ease her troubles. Betty (Lili Reinhart), meanwhile, is trying to save her mother Alice (Madchen Amick) from joining a cult, but The Farm looks like the source of a lot of darkness for our core four.

Thursdays Supernatural Season 14 Oct. 11, at 8pm on The CW Things are not going well for Team Free Will when Supernatural returns for Season

Black-ish 14. Sam (Jared Padalecki) finds himself in a rough place emotionally, what with mourning the loss of his older brother (Jensen Ackles) while also taking on the task of leading the Apocalypse World hunters.

Fridays Fresh off the Boat Season 5 Started Oct. 5, at 8/7c on ABC Loosely based on the life of Eddie Huang during the mid-to-late 1990s, an Asian-American family decides to move to Orlando, Florida from Washington D.C. to embrace the “American Dream.” Jaleel White, best known for playing nerdy Steve Urkel on Family Matters, will guest-star on a Season 5 episode of Fresh Off the Boat.

Speechless Season 3 Started Oct. 5, at 7:30/8:30c on ABC Last season ended with the DiMeos getting evicted from their house, leaving them and all their possessions out on the lawn. But don’t worry, the DiMeos are resourceful, and they take it as an opportunity to travel to England to visit Maya’s (Minnie Driver) estranged father, played by John freaking Cleese, in the first two episodes.

Expect big moments, including an extended musical interlude.

Sundays Madam Secretary Season 5 Started October 7, at 10/9c on CBS This drama follows the professional and

personal life of Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord, a brilliant CIA analyst-turned-college professor who returns to Washington, D.C., as a favor to the president, whom she considers a friend. While he values Elizabeth’s frankness and how she confidently handles the job on her own terms, those qualities aren’t always appreciated, especially by other members of the White House staff.

Shark Tank Season 10 Started Oct. 7 at 10/9c on ABC Contestants present business ideas to five multimillionaires, who will either invest or pass. A new group of budding entrepreneurs take a chance at making their dreams come true by convincing five selfmade, multi-millionaire tycoons to part with their own hard-earned cash and give them the funding they need to jumpstart their business ideas.

The Walking Dead Season 9 Started Oct. 7, 9/8 CT on AMC The action jumped forward a year and a half when the show returned with a supersized premiere.

Dancing With the Stars: Juniors (NEW) Season 1 Started Oct. 7, at 8PM ET/PT on ABC Celebrity kids are paired with professional junior ballroom dancers to perform choreographed routines, which will be judged by a panel that will include renowned ballroom expert.

Charmed (NEW) Reboot Season 1 Oct. 14, at 9pm on The CW Based on the original series of the same name that ran on The WB from 1998 until 2006, Charmed follows three sisters who discover they’re witches. Along for the ride is Harry Greenwood, their “whitelighter,” who serves as a witch’s guide and advisor.

Business Despite Headquarters Move, Peoria Still Home to 12,000 Caterpillar Workers

By Steve Tarter The Journal Star Peoria wasn’t always a company town. It was a distillery town, a farm implement town and a river town before the Caterpillar Tractor Co. set up shop.

A bond developed between company and town that became a mutually-beneficial relationship.

Caterpillar rose to international prominence on the strength of rugged, reliable earthmoving machines while the Peoria area gained jobs — not only in bustling factories but at the headquarters of a Fortune 100 company, a rare distinction for a city with a population of 100,000.

But in 2017, that symbiotic relationship underwent a dramatic change. Caterpillar announced two things that reverberated across central Illinois: one, the company ditched plans for an expansive office project in Downtown Peoria that Caterpillar had promised with great fanfare just two years earlier, and, two, the corporate headquarters would move to the Chicago area.

Peoria would remain Caterpillar’s “home,” the company stated, emphasizing that 12,000 employees would remain in central Illinois while some 300 executives and staff would work out of corporate offices in Deerfield.

Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis expressed appreciation for the employees that stayed behind but called the news “a punch in the gut.” State Sen. Dave Koehler said, “It’s something that everyone feared, but had hoped would never happen.”

The city now has fears of future announcements from Caterpillar management, headed by new CEO Jim Umpleby and board chairman Dave Calhoun, who heads the Blackstone Investment Group, that more jobs might be sent out of town.

While Peoria was jolted by Caterpillar’s actions last year, it’s no secret that the U.S. manufacturing scene has changed mightily since 30,000 people were employed at central Illinois Caterpillar plants in the early 1970s. That was a time when most of Caterpillar’s machines were assembled in Illinois — in plants at Joliet, Aurora and 12 October 10 - 16, 2018

Now Caterpillar has more factories overseas — 76 — than it does in the United States where 62 plants operate. Caterpillar maintains 25 plants in China alone.

When it comes to opening plants in this country, Caterpillar follows the trend of big manufacturers that set up shop in the Sun Belt.

U.S. plants opened by Caterpillar in recent years have been in Georgia and Texas while the company recently moved its mining division from Milwaukee to Tucson, Ariz.

Caterpillar Inc., the name the company adopted in 1986, has expanded beyond bulldozers. Along with making a major commitment to mining, Caterpillar is now heavily involved with equipment used for oil and gas exploration, electric power generation and marine engines.

But it wasn’t always that way.

had established a plant in East Peoria in a building that previously housed the Colean Manufacturing Co., a firm that made steam-powered tractors before the company went bankrupt.

Benjamin Holt’s family business started in the mid-1880’s in California. Holt Caterpillar started up a division in the Midwest, moving to central Illinois with just 12 employees. Fifteen years later, the Holt firm merged with rival C.L. Best www.chicagodefender.com

After the 1925 merger, C.L. Best became Caterpillar’s first CEO, a position he held until his death in 1951. Lee Fosburgh, Caterpillar’s archives director, pointed out that it was Best who got Caterpillar off on the right foot.

“The Best Tracklayer Sixty became the Caterpillar Sixty,” said Fosburgh, referring to the workhorse tractor that helped establish Caterpillar in the earthmoving marketplace. “Best helped lead the push towards the company’s adoption of the diesel engine. He came up with concepts and ideas right up until his death — at age 71,” said Fosburgh.

Former CEO and Chairman Doug Oberhelman, noted that Best went to Wall Street for Caterpillar’s initial public stock offering on Dec. 2, 1929 — just weeks after the devastating stock market crash that precipitated the Great Depression.

After presiding over the com-

pany’s greatest sales year ever in 2012 when Caterpillar topped $65 billion in sales (an occasion celebrated in Fortune magazine with the headline, “Caterpillar crushes it”), Oberhelman went all-in on mining. In 2010, Caterpillar made the largest acquisition in its history, buying Bucyrus International, a Milwaukee-based maker of large mining equipment, for $8.8 billion.

No sooner was the deal completed when mining around the globe went into a tailspin.

As a result, Oberhelman presided over something else: the closing and consolidation of 20 plants worldwide and a dramatic reduction in the company’s workforce.

Between 2012 and 2015, Caterpillar laid off 31,000 people.

As a company that sold 34 pipe-laying machines to China in 1975, Caterpillar had a strategy for China in 2010: “We’re going to play offense and we’re going to win,” said Oberhelman at the time.

By 2014, Caterpillar had 25 plants in China. But the Chinese market, once so hot, went cool.

But like the heavy-duty equipment it produces, Caterpillar has shown an ability to weather storms, whether inflicted by markets or strong winds. Caterpillar was already bouncing back from the malaise in the mining industry in 2017 while in April of this year, Caterpillar posted the highest first-quarter profit in the company’s 93-year history with a 31 percent increase in company revenues.

Today things are changing in Downtown Peoria. Property that had been set aside for Caterpillar’s new headquarters, is slated to be home to OSF HealthCare.

OSF plans to place between 700 and 750 employees at the site at a cost between $80 million and $100 million.

Celebration of Life

Reginald (Reggie) Wardell Alsbrook Reginald (Reggie) Wardell Alsbrook, born on March 29, 1950 in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Louise M. Alsbrook and the late Noel Alsbrook Sr., passed away at age 67 on October 3, 2017 in Medford, Oregon near his majestic Mount Shasta that loved. Reginald graduated from Grand Valley State University in 1977 with a Bachelor of Philosophy. He taught autistic children for several years, was a sales manager with World Book Educational Products, a business owner, philanthropist & inventor. Reginald was the loving husband of Diana L. Alsbrook for 48 years. He is survived by his sons, Jacob M. Alsbrook of Los Angeles, CA. and Nathan J. Alsbrook (Elizabeth) of Phoenix, AZ; daughter, Alisha Alsbrook Stowe (Christopher) of Gainesville, FL; granddaughters, Athena and Sophia Stowe of Gainesville, FL; and a brother, Noel Alsbrook Jr. Reggie enjoyed prospecting, geology, hiking in the mountains, and was an avid reader. He was a member of Self Realization Fellowship for 45 years.

His Celebration of Life was conducted by Brother Bolananda of Self Realization Fellowship in Phoenix, AZ. on January 27, 2018. It was well attended by family and friends from around the country & was filled with love. He was our polestar and will be missed beyond measure! He is with his Masters that he prayed to his entire life. We love you so.

Michelle R. Howard (Oct. 15, 1952–Aug. 21, 2018) Born in Chicago to Dolores & Robert Howard, Dr. Howard-Vital earned her BA & MA from the Univ of Chicago, and her PhD from the Univ of IL. Starting as an English instructor and director of College Without Walls at Central YMCA College, Dr. Howard-Vital proclaimed about her love of education, “I cannot believe they pay me so much–($10k/yr)–to have so much fun!”

Dr. Howard-Vital served over 30 years as a leader in education, including: Dean of Continuing Educ, Harold Washington College; Dean of Continuing Educ. & Non-Traditional Programs, Chicago State Univ.; Dean of Univ. College & Assoc. VP for Academic Programs, Edinboro Univ. of PA; Vice Chancellor for Public Service & Continuing Studies/Professor of Specialty Studies, UNC Wilmington; Assoc. VP for Academic Affairs, UNC General Admin; Interim Chancellor, Winston Salem State Univ; President, Cheyney Univ; Interim President, FL Memorial Univ.

Her recognitions include: the Bethune Women Cultivating Women Award, the Ass’n of Black Women in Higher Educ Award for Leadership, Univ of Chicago’s Outstanding Graduate, and Univ of IL’s Distinguished Alumni Award. Dr. Howard-Vital loved students and firmly believed in the transformative power of education for individuals and for the country. “We need educators and critical thinkers now more than ever–from ALL segments of society–if we hope to compete successfully as world leaders.”

She leaves husband, Geri Vital, daughter, Madelyn Vital, stepson, Gabriel Priester, siblings, Felicia Howard-Spalding & David Howard, and a lifetime of many cherished relatives, friends and colleagues.

Instead of flowers, the family asks for contributions in her name to scholarships at an institution where she worked.
