City News Gunman Kills Doctor, Police Officer and Pharmacist at Mercy Hospital Days before celebrating Thanksgiving, Chicagoans are left reeling over a deadly shooting at Mercy Hospital. On Monday, November 19, a doctor, Tamara O’Neal, was shot and killed by her ex-fiance, Juan Lopez, 32. O’Neal was reportedly on her way to work when Lopez approached her in the hospital’s parking lot. Lopez also shot and killed a police officer, Samuel Jimenez, and a resident pharmacist, Dayna Less, who also worked at the hospital.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson and Mayor Rahm Emanuel held a press conference to talk about the shooting, giving credit to the police offers who handled the situation.

Lopez was also killed in the shooting.

The city is calling for prayers for the families of Tamara O’Neal the victims and domestic violence advocates are asking people to say the slain doctor’s name to remember her life and struggle.

Obamas Visit Chicago In two separate events, former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama visited their hometown.

The former president was here for the Obama Foundation Summit at the Marriott Marquis on Sunday, November 18 and Monday, November 19. The summit was attended by hundreds of young leaders from around the world who participated in the foundation’s programs this past year.

“The theme of this year’s Summit is ‘Common Hope. Uncommon Stories,’” said CEO David Simas. “That reflects a recognition that we all want a better future for our communities, even as we all bring different points of view, experiences, talents, and ideas for how to shape that future.”

South Side native Michelle Obama spent several days in the Windy City kicking off her national book tour. She made visits at her alma mater Whitney Young Magnet High School, signed books at the bookstore on the University of Chicago campus, and was interviewed by Oprah at her book event on Tuesday, November 13.

Her book “Becoming” had record sales, selling more than 725,000 units on its first day and is Barnes & Noble’s fastest selling book in 2018. Following a meeting on Thursday with Target executives, U.S. Representative Bobby L. Rush (D-Ill.) is calling for a Black Friday protest of all Chicago Target stores.

“I remain outraged at Target following their refusal to reconsider their disappointing and bone-headed decision to close two stores on Chicago’s South Side and abandon the Morgan Park and Chatham neighborhoods. They have declared war on these communities as they plan to leave these neighborhoods. Target will leave a gaping hole in the quality of life of tens of thousands of 1st District residents.

These communities are boiling mad and I found Target’s response to community leaders, residents, and me to be empty and noncommittal. We do not trust Target anymore.”

Rush went on to say the community will respond in kind.

“I am calling on residents from across the city to join me on Black Friday at the Target on S. Cottage Grove in a public protest against their disregard for the South Side of Chicago and their unwillingness to be a good corporate neighbor. Deserting the South Side is deserting all of Chicago.”

The stores set for closure are in Chatham at 86th and Cottage Grove Avenue and Morgan Park at 119th and Marshfield Streets.

Target executives cite low performance as a rationale for the two stores closures and are standing firm on their decision as final.

Congressman Rush said Target corporation failed to properly oversee management and maintenance of the stores.

Additionally, Dr. Robert Hales, chair of the UC Davis Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral sciences, suggests that the Holiday Blues may impact more people this year versus past years because of increased concerns about war, terrorism and the economy emphasized in the news and elsewhere.

According to Dr. Hales, depression is one of the most common mental ailments. If during the holiday period, you experience many of the following symptoms, you may have more than the Holiday Blues but a true depression, and in this case, it is important to seek professional help: *feeling slow and restless

*lack of energy *increase or decrease in appetite *persistent thoughts of death or suicide *feelings of hopelessness or helplessness *sleeping more or less *unaccounted for somatic symptoms *tearfulness on a regular basis So how can we lessen or avoid the Holiday Blues? Be sure not to perceive the holidays as a time to cure all problems. The holidays don’t fundamentally cure loneliness or sadness. If you have a spiritual tradition: Merry Christmas, Happy Yule, Joyous Kwanzaa, Happy Hanukah--be mindful of the spiritual nature of the tradition

and celebrate it. Take time to rest and exercise. Don’t over indulge in eating or drinking. Create new traditions. If you have limited family, create an auxiliary one merging friends to celebrate holiday cheer.

Don’t spend too much time alone.

Be sure to make plans and stay active.

Taking stock of the positive can prevent the Grinch from stealing anything from us this holiday period. That “bah humbug” feeling can go away and we can remain grounded in holiday cheer.

Joey Price Joey Price grew up on Chicago‘s West Side, living in a house with his parents and grandparents.

A few years later, he and his parents relocated to the West Suburbs where he attended private school until the age of fourteen.

Before graduating from grade school, his grandmother passed away, and it overwhelmed him with emotions he did not know how to control. CD: How can 19 years as a Chicago police officer inform a mayoral seat? What changes does a new mayor have to bring about?

RW: Right now, we know that we are leading the US in crime.

You need someone who knows where crime starts and where it ends, someone who can diffuse it. I have great intel on what needs to be done. We need a mayor who can put a huge pause on crime and I’m qualified for it.

CD: Gentrification and displacement are major mayoral talking points this election. How do you plan on addressing both in the African-American community?

RW: We have to look at the economic development in these communities. We have to put more stakeholders in those areas.

If we look and focus on small businesses, in all 77 neighborhoods, then that will keep people in and give them a sense of ownership.

People stay where they feel comfortable and safe.

CD: Protests were frequent under Rahm Emanuel’s tenure, especially about police oversight and accountability. As a member of the Chicago Police Department, how do you feel about the relationship between community and police? Do you think our current mayor navigated this successfully?

When you trust someone, and you can see their genuineness, you follow them. People are telling me, “If you become mayor, we will have someone we can trust again.”

I’m out here working a 9-to-5 like everyone else. I’m in the community and people trust that. We need someone relatable.

CD: What are your top priorities as mayor? On day one, what does Mayor Washington tackle?

RW: Crime. We’re going to revamp the department and get out in the streets to make a difference.

We have a huge portion of police officers who aren’t from here, who came from other states and took the job. We need someone with at least four years of residency.

You cannot police a city that you know nothing about.

CD: What about education?

RW: That’s top. Growing up, we had trades and vocations in schools. Selective enrollment wasn’t given to everybody. We need to revamp these neighborhood schools and make them more appealing. If we introduce vocations in elementary school and place them in high school,

then there will be opportunities for economic success.

CD: As a pastor, do you have a particular message to the faith-based communities during your campaign?

RW: Communication. Communication is key. A lot of the mature crowd for the community are churchgoers. We need to push across the pulpit and take ministry outside of church walls. Most church leaders and members only come to church on Sunday. They don’t come out.

What makes me unique is that I’m outside all of the time with my ministry. You have to get out here.

CD: How long have you considered politics?

RW: My godfather ran before –– Bob Fioretti.

CD: Wow. That’s your godfather?

RW: My political godfather, not biological. He showed me the way 10 years ago. He kinda took me under his wing and showed me the ins and outs.

CD: Any final words you want to give to the voters in this election?

RW: This is more than a campaign. It’s a movement to wake up a sleeping community.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Celebrates Founders Day Worship Service on Sunday at the Greater Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church by the Rhi Gamma Gamma Chapter was a culmination of a week of activities celebrating “Omega Achievement Week” leading up to Founder’s Day on November 17. Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was founded 107 years ago on November 17, 1911, at Howard University, Washington, D.C. The Chicagoland Joint Founders Banquet hosted by the Iota Chapter was held at the McCormick Hyatt and honored “Omega Man of the Year” Andre Youngblood and Jennifer LeFlore, Founder and Owner of Mamafresh Chicago.

Matteson Mayor Sheila Chalmers-Currin hosted a fundraiser which featured South Suburban Women Leaders as models wearing Barbara Bates Designs at Bar Louie in Matteson. I had the honor of serving as commentator and emcee for the evening. Since beginning her fashion empire in 1986, Chicago-based fashion designer Barbara Bates has become a dynamic leader in the fashion industry. Let’s Eat: Slab Barbecue

By The Black Foodies There is an area along 71st Street east of Stony Island Avenue that is becoming a hotbed of quality restaurants in the South Shore Community. While covering Vegan Fest 2018 at Chicago State University, ironically someone asked The Black Foodies if we had b e e n to Slab Barbec u e , located The Black Foodies at 1918 East 71st Street. We found this question peculiar since we were at an event all about the vegan lifestyle, but who are we to look a gift horse in the mouth? We are always looking for new restaurants to share with everyone, so we decided to make our way over and give Slab Barbecue a try. Accompanying us was our friend – television personality, actress, comedienne and model, Erica Watson.

With Erica being a fellow foodie, we were pleased to have her along for the ride to give her thoughts on Slab Barbecue. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by the intoxicating aroma of hickory smoke and barbecue in the air, always an encouraging sign when out for an adventurous day of eating barbecue.

Miss Coretta started things off

with Slab Barbecue’s Turkey Burger, which came with hand-cut fries.

The first thing noticed about the burger was its size – it was absolutely huge. After her initial mouthful, Miss Coretta deemed Slab’s turkey burger, “Thanksgiving on a bun!” She found the burger to be tender and juicy, executed in a manner whereas it wasn’t the typical dry and bland turkey burger.

The bun was fluffy, the tomatoes and lettuce were garden fresh, altogether creating a delightful bite.

Miss Coretta felt the hand-cut fries were above average, having a slight sweetness to them – the perfect partner-in-crime with the turkey burger.

Being a lover of some good ol’ yardbird, I sampled Slab’s Barbecue Chicken which can be ordered either half or whole. I ordered the half chicken dinner, barbecue sauce on the side, with Mac-n-Cheese. The chicken itself looked delicious and tasted even better than it looked.

My initial bite brought a smoky goodness that permeated my palette and immediately let me know that this chicken was cooked over an open flame. The chicken was tender, well-seasoned and extremely flavorful. The char marks were greatly appreciated and added an extra depth of flavor that anyone would appreciate. Now, on to Slab’s barbecue sauce. Miss Coretta and I have been in our lab attempting to duplicate this yummy concoction, to no avail. The sauce

The sauce was sweet and tangy, with a subtle hint of black pepper, and created a pucker factor that let us know there is either lemon juice, lemon zest, or both in the sauce. (I told you Miss Coretta and I have been in the lab).

After dunking the chicken into the barbecue sauce, I knew right then that Slab Barbecue knows how to deliver delicious barbecue . . . ‘sin’sational! The mac-n-cheese was cheesy, well-balanced and definitely hit the spot.

Our friend, Erica Watson, had the privilege of sampling Slab Barbecue’s St. Louis Style Ribs. After her very first bite, she said, “Listen, BABY, this is GOOD!” Erica went on to say the ribs were tender, smoky and made with love. Erica also stated the sauce deserved to be slathered on a slab of ribs.

She found the potato salad to be creamy, with just enough of a chunk factor for it not to be boring. She really enjoyed the baked beans and appreciated the fact that they were not too sweet and were an excellent complement to the ribs. Erica found the spaghetti (which was actually Linguini pasta in a tomato sauce) very tasty and a whole meal within itself. Our girl, Ms. Watson, had nothing but glowing reviews for her Slab Barbecue experience.

ComEd’s customer assistance programs include a combination of programs funded by ComEd and programs funded by the state of Illinois or the federal government.

“There will be changes to the customer assistance programs we offer,” Dominguez said. “Current programs are inadequate, poorly designed and not being fully utilized.”

Dominguez is also focusing on consumer protections.

“There also are inadequate consumer protections,” Dominguez said. ”Most energy businesses operate properly but there are bad actors. We do think people should have a choice and we welcome retail electric competition with (legitimate) companies, but there are some bad apples in every bunch and they are going door-to-door (and over the phone) saying they are signing people up for discounted rates and some of them are lying saying they are from ComEd to get the sale. We do not ever send people out door-to-door. If anyone shows up at your door saying they are from ComEd, shut the door because that is a scam. We owe it to our customers and the good actors to clean it up. We’re trying to get legislation to deal with that.”

To address the issue, ComEd is joining more than 100 energy companies across the U. S. and Canada in the effort to protect customers from scams targeting customers of electric, natural gas, water, and other utilities.

Energy companies for a third year designated Nov. 14 as Utilities United Against Scams Day, a weeklong campaign, including social media and online content, focused on exposing the tricks scammers use to steal money from customers and how customers can protect themselves. The effort, which includes industry member organizations such as Edison Electric Institute, encourages companies to share the messages to help guard against scam and imposter activity.

Customers who fall victim to scams typically receive an unsolicited phone call from someone who falsely claims to be a company representative. The scammer warns that the customer’s service will be shut off if they fail to make a payment – usually within a short timeframe through a prepaid debit card.

Some scammers also use caller ID “spoofing” to replicate a utility company’s phone number.

Customers can avoid being scammed by taking a few precautions: •Never provide social security numbers or personal information to anyone initiating contact claiming to be a utility representative or asking the customer to send money to another person or entity other than the local utility providers.

•Always ask to see a company photo ID before allowing any utility worker into a home or business.

•Never make a payment for services to anyone coming to the door of a home or business.

Climate Change and Environmental Concerns

“I don’t think the clean energy movement is a choice,” Dominguez said. “Climate concerns are real and there are steps we have to take. We can’t look at the intensity of the storms and the manmade emissions and deny there’s a problem. It’s our responsibility at ComEd and all of us collectively have a big role…businesses and universities… to deliver the talent, [and call on] Springfield for legislation. Our expectations will be at the state level until things change in the current administration.”

By Carl West 12 Voices I can remember about two months ago talking to Phillip Jackson, as I posed a question to him that I’ve been asking dozens of people like Father Pfleger, Shelton Smith, Dr. Conrad Carl West Worrill, Eli Washington, Victor Love, and others.

This is something that I’ve also been pondering very seriously as I travel down my expected journey of being a transformational agent and a mentor to many. The question is, “How long do (I) plan to engage in this kind of work?” “When do (I) anticipate stopping or even slowing down the sacrificing of my life in order to serve?”

Phillip’s response, when posed with those questions, was “Until I

die!” Damn!

Yes, Mr. Jackson recently passed away due to complications from Cancer. But Phil was a tired and beaten man. Not physically beat up but mentally worn out from all of the committed years of pursuing excellence and attempting to push, persuade and/or even force parents to dedicate their lives to their own children.

I saw his struggles. We applaud Mr. Jackson for his tireless efforts!

Some even volunteered to assist in his daily battle to raise much-needed funding from stingy organizations and foundations who saw his and others’ work as valuable but they didn’t truly believe in spending resources with little Black boys and girls.

Phil produced this disparity study that highlighted how much foundations invested in White organizations versus agencies like the Black Star Project and other agencies serving at-risk youth, and the difference was staggering. Phil called me to write about the results of his study and we scripted copy together about the foundations’ disrespect in their giving.

Phil walked the articles and the results directly to the doorsteps of each foundation that he researched. Yes, he was blasted by the very foundations, but in the end, he forced them to invest more charitable dollars. This particular fight was rough on Phil. It called for all his strength to mount an attack and to withstand the massive pushback.

It’s battles like the one Phil waged against the foundations that really prompted me to give serious consideration to how long I wanna do the work that I’m doing through my digital platforms and also behind the scenes fighting for equality and equity. I’ve been questioning myself almost daily.

Each night when I retire to bed from a long day of chat sessions, debates, meetings, confrontations and researching my TRUTH, I ask myself.....”how long will I continue to fight?”

It was coincidental that Father Pfleger’s response was the exact same as Phil. He stated that he has been in the struggle for over 40 years and he would do this work until he can’t anymore--until he

has no breath left in his body. Others I mentioned also expressed the same. Only Shelton couldn’t really give a real gauge given the fact that he’s only 30 years old..... LOL. I started to examine this scenario/question early this year while observing certain individuals in the Civil Rights struggles. It’s what led me to script that article a few months back about the iconic and faithful servant Rev. Jesse Jackson.

I expressed how he should ease up and take a back seat to the struggle. Yes, no one can do what he does, but at least step aside and give others a fighting chance.

Actually, regardless if anyone can execute formidable battles equal to Rev. Jackson is really beside the point. He served his community and his God for long enough, walk away and spend some time doing nothing. It might feel quite relaxing. I know, as I’ve been told by his inner circle, what else will he do? It’s all that he knows!

These questions I presented to select freedom fighters was a way for me to also gauge my time in the struggle. I’m contemplating when

is it my time to pause my fingers, shut my mouth and mind MY business, only. TRUTH BE TOLD, I’ve made my mind up and in the very near future (2-4 years), I plan to leave the game.

I don’t wanna be a burnt out old ass trying to save the world. Today, I feel completely comfortable knowing that I’ve done more than enough. My God is pleased with me. Hopefully, a slew of emerging visionaries have been watching my multitude of steps and are aspiring to walk as I’ve traveled. That to me is the true test of transformational leadership.

I wanna quote someone who I dislike, but his statement made perfect sense when he announced his decision to not seek re-election: “This was a (journey) of a lifetime, but I don’t wanna make it a (journey) for a lifetime.”

Our purpose (or destiny) in life is to identify our God-given talent and apply it to our passion which is directly tied to what each of us was meant to fix in a world full of brokenness.

specific genius based on our individual PASSION and TALENT. Your unique genius positions you to address something that’s broken in the world. This month, we’ll end the series by exploring the third and final component of what we’ve coined “the GENIUS equation”: PURPOSE. GENIUS = PASSION(pa) + TALENT(t) + PURPOSE(pu) “…As it relates to the genius equation, my revelation of purpose for your life is simple. To put it mathematically, your purpose (pu) is a function of your passion (pa) and talent (t): As y = f(x), pu = f(pa,t) I know I just scared some of you, so let me rephrase this! Your purpose is defined by your ability to identify and apply a talent you have to your passion. Recalling that your passion relates to something broken in the world that grieves your heart while your talent is the tool you’ve been given to fix it, your purpose evolves into what you were put on this earth to do. This is otherwise known as your destiny. You need to understand this: you are destined to be a genius. From the moment you were created, you were meant to change the world in a way that only you can. Some may think that

such change only matters when it’s significant and recognized by others, but this is yet another untruth. Let’s explore this with an example, shall we?

Example: This book was published in 2018 – the year of the Black Panther. This movie, based on a character that was developed during the 1960s, came out and became a cultural phenomenon overnight. Despite its known origin – written as a comic book character by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and directed as a movie by Ryan Coogler – the seed for Black Panther was actually planted in the 1940s by Orrin Evans. Orrin Evans was a journalist who wanted to create positive images of African-Americans in the media – specifically, in the comics. He took his talent for writing, applied it to his passion for eliminating minstrel stereotypes of Black people and started All-Negro Comics in 1947. His panels were rich with characters showcasing their African heritage in roles that were not relegated to sidekick caricatures and buffoonery.

His name and comic books have been obscured in the annals of time as his idea was met with more resistance than fanfare.

during Black History Month, his impact influenced what has gone on to become an international, billion-dollar blockbuster… …The most important thing to realize about this equation is that, not unlike every instantiation of mathematics known to man, you have to learn from your mistakes.

Doing so familiarizes yourself with the equations and variables which position you to eventually get the right result if you don’t give up. In layman’s terms, genius is all about trial and error, folks! Every mistake you make in navigating this equation is simply a future opportunity to teach yourself how to get it right. If you give up after the first few attempts, you will never know the satisfaction of discovering the right answer… …So if you’ve gone through life without realizing your genius as it relates to your passion, talent and purpose, don’t sweat it. One of life’s greatest abilities is flexibility. Just reassess and fail forward.

That’s called growing up. As I grew into my thirties and discovered my genius, I simply had to put away childish things: When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish

things. – 1 Corinthians 13:11 …The very essence of the book is to help you identify who you are by changing the way you think of yourself. After all, the Word of God says in Proverbs 23:7 that as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he… …The true mark of a genius – someone endowed with the mind of Christ - is one who is not afraid to try something and get it wrong because they realize that failures get us one step closer to unlocking something truly righteous and amazing that was part of God’s plan when He formed you before the foundation of the world. Join us. Join the genius generation.

Otherwise, you may find yourself getting good at a career you were never meant to have.”
