Community
Diabetes Solutions Center to Assist People With Insulin Affordability The American Diabetes Association estimates that over 30 million Americans are affected by diabetes and is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. Studies show that African Americans are disproportionately affected by diabetes in comparison to the general population. The rates of diagnosed diabetes among African Americans is 12.7% compared to 7.4% of Whites. Not only does the African American community face the dilemma of increased diabetes diagnoses, African Americans face numerous health care challenges when trying to manage diabetes, such as cost for treatments, medications, limited supplies and access to primary care to maintain a quality of life. Eli Lilly and Company, a global leader in diabetes care, understands these gaps and burdens of costs in the African American community. They understand that there are gaps in health care for communities of color and are working to help close it by reducing the cost of insulin and making sure that everyone will have equal access to their medicines. For this reason, Eli Lilly has launched Lilly Diabetes Solution Center and Helpline in the African American community to ensure people receive comprehensive treatment for diabetes. To spread the word on this effort, Lilly will launch this announcement with
full page ads in African American newspapers across the country. Beginning next week, the National Newspapers Publishers Association representing Black newspapers will be running advertising in selected markets announcing the solutions center as an opportunity for African Americans to receive affordable diabetes medication. This is especially great news for African Americans who are disproportionately affected by diabetes and its effects. This collaboration with the Lilly Diabetes Solution Center will help decrease the complications of dia-
betes by making sure that access to affordable insulin is available to improve the quality of life in the African American community. About The Lilly Diabetes Solution Center and Helpline The Solution Center is a solution-oriented program to provide relief for those who are not insured, underinsured or have high out-of-pocket expenses. It will assist people to gain access to affordable insulin, resources and options. Specifically, the center provides cost savings solutions, free clinic information to receive
support and short-term and longterm options for immediate needs. Lilly is dedicated to making sure that no one has to pay full price for insulin. And for those who currently pay high costs of insulin, Lilly wants to provide lower costs insulin options. “We don’t want anyone to have to pay full list price for their insulin, and many people who do will be able to pay significantly less by calling our helpline,” said Mike Mason, senior vice president, Connected Care and Insulins. “Our goal is to ensure that people paying high out-of-pocket costs for Lilly insulins are matched
with the best solution available to reduce their financial burden and help ensure they receive the treatment they need.” Lilly has also donated insulin to three relief agencies that serve communities of color globally and particularly in the US -- Americares, Direct Relief and Dispensary of Hope. They have distributed insulin to 150 free clinics around the country. The helpline will direct people toward these clinics in their local communities and provide information on how they can obtain it. Lilly wants to hear from those who have trouble paying or cannot afford their insulin by calling the helpline. If there is an immediate need, please call the helpline to learn the immediate and long-term best options of care. “We encourage people who pay near full list price for insulin and those who don’t have the financial means to afford the costs they face to call the helpline,” Mason said. “We want to help people find ways to obtain insulin at more affordable prices.” Help is available now by calling the Lilly Diabetes Solutions Center helpline at 833-808-1234 to get more information and immediate assistance. Representatives will be available from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm (ET) Monday through Friday.
Seventh Annual Chicago Elite Classic Scheduled For Weekend By Jalen Morgan Defender Contributing Writer Recent weather should have made it evident what time of the year it is. For those who are unaware, high school basketball season is upon us. Get ready for the sound of sneaker skids under bright lights as fans fill bleachers and rave in elation. The 7th Annual Chicago Elite Classic (CEC) is set to begin Friday, November 30 from 6-9 p.m. and Saturday, December 1 from 10:30 a.m.-9:00 p.m. at the newly constructed Wintrust Arena. This year is bound for excitement as nationally ranked teams THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
from Missouri, West Virginia, Kansas, Wisconsin, Ohio, and California are welcomed by former State Champion Schools Whitney Young and Simeon. ESPN Top 100 nationally ranked players will go head-tohead in eleven stellar games that will entertain audiences. These kids can ball, no doubt, however chemistry and egos will be the forefront topics because of this. Head Coach of Simeon High School’s Basketball team, Robert Smith, stated the key is to “treat all of the athletes the same. Once they see it’s no favoritism, they fall in line.” The lack of favoritism and the ultimate desire to win seem to be
the recipe for the basketball juggernaut. “It’s not about individual players, it’s about us winning.” Coach Smith adds. “We just want to win. I mean, I don’t even think people know Jabari [Parker] or Derrick [Rose] weren’t the leading scorers on the team when they played there.” The Chicago classic was formulated 8 years ago via a collaboration between two top tier basketball powerhouses, Whitney Young and Simeon. The purpose was not only to showcase Chicago’s top notch basketball, but to unite the two schools and provide a visionary event that will further the athletes off of the hardwood. www.chicagodefender.com
“We do other things besides basketball, we have the Champions in Life workshop,” says Coach Smith. The workshop exposes student-athletes to alternate avenues of success other than dribbling a basketball. The tactic is to recruit entrepreneurs and professionals in various fields, and invite these individuals to speak to the student athletes and help paint a picture of what the world has to offer. These other successful, intelligent, and wealthy individuals usually tend to be people the teens may not be familiar with. The plan is to broaden the horizon for young people - to expand their knowledge and op-
portunity to make a living. That step forward will hopefully transform these young men into leaders and not followers. Simeon faces Vincent St. Mary (OH) Saturday, December 1. Whitney Young will follow, hosting Mater Dei (Ca). Advance tickets for CEC are available for $13.00 at participating schools and $20.00 via ticketmaster.com and the Wintrust Box Office located at 200 E. Cermak Rd Chicago, IL 60616. Community Pfizer and National Newspaper Publishers Association collaborate to Raise Awareness of the Sickle Cell Disease in the Black Community By Marshelle Sanders Defender Contributing Writer Recently, Pfizer, the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) and a panel of Chicago doctors/panelist spoke on working together to help develop the best practices for managing sickle cell disease patients, navigation of patient’s experience and discuss what patients go through personally. This educational evening was dedicated to understanding the rare and debilitating disease. “This collaboration with Pfizer provides an opportunity for NNPA to inform and educate the readers of our 211-member Black-owned newspapers in more than 70 markets across the country on sickle cell disease, an often-misunderstood disease that has a profound impact on the health and well-being of those affected,” said Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., NNPA President. “Together with Pfizer, we look forward to providing sickle cell disease education that can underscore the importance of improving quality of care in the community.” According to Pfizer, “Sickle cell disease is the most common inherited blood disorder in the
United States, affecting nearly 100,000 Americans. Although it affects many different ethnic groups, the majority of people with sickle cell disease are of African descent. In the United States, sickle cell disease occurs in approximately 1 out of every 365 African-American births. Access to care and delivery of innovative treatments prove to be among the most significant challenges faced by people living with sickle cell disease in America.” Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects the shape of red blood cells. Sickled red blood cells do not live as long as healthy ones, and your body has a hard time replacing them. That is why SCD patients experience anemia, severe fatigue or tiredness, swelling hands and feet and frequent episodes of pain, also known as crises, in different parts of the body. The doctors discussed the process and procedure for when a patient has a severe crisis and needs medical attention and whether they are admitted in the hospital for inpatient treatment. Regardless of how much pain the patient is in, they all have one common need which is for medical staff and people to understand how they feel and how to
handle their situation correctly. Dr. Radhika Peddinti, from the University of Chicago (affiliated physician of La Rabida/Comer Children’s Hospital) explained the difference between pediatric and adult care. “There is a transition that has to happen between the age of 18 to 25. These patients are still young, and they fear once they are released from our care into a regular patient setting that they will not be treated properly again because they have to see other nurses, doctors who may not understand what they are going through or how much pain they are in.” After the patients reach the age of 18, care is getting worse and patients may have behavioral issues because of the lack of attention, excruciating pain, not receiving adequate care or not being seen at all due to low staff. Some patients scatter from clinic to clinic seeking help. In hospitals, sickle cell patients are typically treated by generalists who know little about the disease and patients’ desperate need for pain relief. At one hospital, researchers found that sickle cell patients waited for 60 percent longer to get pain medication than other patients who
reported less severe pain and were triaged into a less severe category. Former White House Cabinet Secretary for Barack Obama Broderick D. Johnson explained how he created a program to help children and youth patients with jobs or attending school not be penalized for being inactive because sometimes they are too sick to do either. “The goal was to get health insurance for children, and their families who needed help. I was also chairperson of the My Brother’s Keeper Obama task force, and another issue we looked at was chronic absenteeism. A child who misses classes on an average 2-5 days out of the month leads to dropping out. They’re leaving behind their education, probably being bullied by other students, having restless days in pain; what can we do to make sure that child’s condition is understood?” Executive Director, Sickle Cell Disease Association of Illinois, TaLana Hughes spoke about community support and care as a way to help have empathy for patients who have been afflicted with this disease. “As a community-based organization, we have many services.
Some platforms support each other or connect patients to a social worker or educational field that can speak on opportunities, clarification, and topics around empowerment to the nation for Sickle Cell Disease patients. If you have a patient that is educated with their circumstances, it will improve communication between them and their provider.” The team of people at this event are committed to delivering life-changing therapies to people living with this rare disease. It goes beyond clinical research to support the extraordinary disease community through innovative collaborations. The purpose of the event was to improve awareness, work together and ultimately address the unmet medical needs of sickle cell disease patients. General Manager Colin Hadden: Changes Coming to Illinois Lottery Last year, Camelot Illinois became the new operator and manager of the Illinois Lottery. And now, patrons can begin to look for many changes to the lottery. “We are here to revitalize and refresh the Illinois Lottery,” said Colin Hadden, the new general manager. “We want to maximize the returns for the state and operate in a transparenet and socially responsible way….Our overall goal is to attract new clients, new people to play a little….” Hadden, who served as general manager of the Hossier (Indiana) Lottery prior to coming to Illinois, generated record sales in
Indiana. And he’s looking forward to bringing that same type of success to Illinois with the contract that runs 10 years. Hadden said the company is starting off pretty strong, exceeding its goal to increase the net income to the state by 5.7 percent this year. “Our job is to run the lottery and work with whomever the people of Illinois elect…we are looking forward to working with the new administration.” Illinois Lottery customers will see new equipment and technology as Camelot Illinois rolls out an estimated $86 million investment. There will be new equip-

ment and new vending machines in every location. They will have a fresher and more modern look and feel. The digital platform will too. The lottery will also introduce a new game where customers can win $1000 a day for life rather than one big top prize. “This might appeal to a younger player,” Hadden said. “$1,000 a day is quite a lot of money.” “We want to make sure people play within limits,” Hadden emphasized. “Our whole ethos is around people enjoying it so that it is fun…we say ‘when the fun stops, stop.’” Colin Hadden www.chicagodefender.com

Unapologetically Monique Comes to Chicago By Marshelle R. Sanders Defender Contributing Writer “What are you doing, Mo? You look amazing!” Academy Award winner and legendary comedian Mo’Nique replies, “I’m being loved.” Mo’Nique came to the Chicago Improv (Schaumburg location) on November 16 and 17. Mo’Nique is looking great and feeling good. While talking to her this past week, she opened up on how she came about living a healthier lifestyle, self-care, her husband Sidney Hicks and being honest and resilient. Monique’s stand-up comedy show sold out two shows each evening with a female empowered theme, ”Genuine Sistahood.” Opening for her was Chicago’s very own Comedienne Correy Bell and Ms. Arkansas; Mo dubbed these two ladies the new Queens of Comedy. They gave the crowd a dose of their world outside of being comedians and covered topics such as marriage, sex, work ethics, being sexy mothers, and provided hysterical anecdotes. When Mo’Nique hit the stage, she came out dancing to the Lil Wayne featuring Swizz Beatz track “Uproar.” She brought on stage a lady in the audience (Tiffany) to feel what she felt at the moment, loved and appreciated for being herself. Laughter was in the atmosphere, relatable real-life topics were brought up, topics that some people may be afraid to talk about because of social norms. Why can’t we talk about sexual abuse, sexuality, having the arrogant Miss Independent attitude to the point of destruction, creating and having genuine Black love relationships, being vulnerable to love or be loved, pleasing your man the right way (i.e., Jill Scott with the microphone) and vice versa. Mo’nique kept it real and authentic with the audience that being a boss b**** once overshadowed real love, happiness and wanting a family. Self-discovery, a change of heart, counseling and her husband Sidney Hicks motivating her has helped her fight unhealthy life habits in an honest, sincere method. The emotions flowed with tears as Mo’nique got real intimate about her life, and everything she said was straight from her spirit. Her story encouraged the audience to reflect as a culture how to THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
Mo’Nique seek to change our perspectives about life situations in a progressive way. “I’m passionate about my community, especially with our sisters. I gave myself away a lot, looking for affection anyway it would come. What I wasn’t doing before was loving me or loving myself enough to say, you deserve better, but first I had to be my best. When I finally allowed myself to be loved, is when my life changed, we have to allow love to happen. “What I’m talking about is allowing love to happen without putting a dollar sign on it. We have to learn to nurture one another in relationships.” Mo’Nique stated that someone
had put on her Instagram that her husband had brainwashed her; she started to respond, but then she held her breath and said you know what, they’re right. “This man has been so nurturing and so patient and has loved me in a way that makes me want to be better. I had to wash my brain, from all the b*******, conditioned beliefs, traditional approaches so I could be a better me, the best for my husband, my children, my grandbabies to come, so I’m learning not to be offended.” When it comes to criticism from people nowadays, Mo’Nique has a different perspective on how she deals with it. “I understand it, I’ve been there www.chicagodefender.com

the people that say, ‘I don’t give a damn, you’re this, you’re that,’ but I keep fighting for them not with them because I know our community has been so beaten up and abused. You don’t stand up, don’t you know what will happen when you stand up, so that’s why I don’t take it personally and I love them even harder.” The comedianne stated that her health journey began about ten years ago. She was with her husband, and he asked her what she weighed to be curious. “I knew it was over 300 pounds, but I couldn’t say that out loud, so I said 266 pounds real proud. He then said ‘mama that’s too much, and I want you for a lifetime,’ and at that moment I knew I needed to do something because I’ve never had anyone say they want me for a lifetime.” Mo’Nique also stated “I’m open to drinking beet juice, vegetable juice and ginger with a turmeric shot. I am open to working out, not being judgmental, let me live my best life for real, these are the lifestyle changes I am open to and more positive ways.” Another method Mo’Nique has adopted to make strides into a healthier lifestyle is scenery walks. “I go walking, and when I go walking, sis, there are times when people have walked past me, and I would have tears rolling down my eyes, or they would see me busting out laughing because at that time I’m dealing with me. When I’m dancing, I’m meditating, Meditation is good, and it comes in all forms, and we have to take the time out to deal with ourselves.” Mo’Nique is very appreciative of everything, she loves genuinely, but she will not compromise her integrity or not speak out about inequality. To hear and see the authenticity, subscribe to Mo’Nique’s YouTube page: Mo’Nique Worldwide or catch a show for yourself and objectively hear it from her, raw, funny and unapologetically in 2019.

The Book of Mormon: Tomorrow Is a Latter Day By Rick and Brenda McCain Let’s Play It’s like the night before Christmas, but this time it’s the night before Thanksgiving, and all through the Oriental Theatre, not one creature was silent, not even a mouse. “The Book of Mormon” had its opening night, and the house was filled with laughter. This play is just ridiculously funny! The best gut laugh of the year. In 2011, “The Book of Mormon,” a musical comedy opened its door to rave reviews, and the fun continues seven years later to a packed house. This play that pokes fun at the Mormon faith and just about anything and everything that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints practices is one of the funniest performances in theater, television or movies. Following two Mormon missionaries fresh out of training, they are presented with a two-year mission to cleanse the soul of the sinner and bring them to the salvation of The Lord. They are sent to a remote part of Uganda to
Oriental Theatre Presents The Book of Mormon Features book, music, and lyricsby Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, and Matt Stone Playing Now December 2, 2018 Monica L. Patton (Mrs. Brown), Kevin Clay (Elder Price) and Connor Peirson (Elder Cunningham). convert inhabitants to their faith. One character named Elder Price, who would have preferred Disney World in Orlando as his preferred mission location, is paired with Elder Cunningham, a misfit with a vivid imagination who can’t seem to do anything right. The start of their missionary trip begins with their luggage being confiscated and villagers who are uninterested in their Jesus who hasn’t done anything for them. Their land is filled with famine, AIDS, oppression and a ruthless ruler. When the missionaries arrive at the place where they will live for the next two years, they are met with several other Mormon mis-
sionaries, hoping that their presence will help them convert the stiff-neck people in Uganda lead by Mafala (Jacques C. Smith) and his enthusiastic daughter Nabulungi (Kayla Pecchioni). Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who are best known as the creators of “South Park,” collaborate with Robert Lopez who co-wrote the music for the musical Avenue Q and for composing the songs for Disney’s films Frozen and Coco, are amazing together. After several years of developing the storyline and lyrics and musical score, the producers make the bold decision to take “The Book of Mormon” straight to the Big Apple, Broad-
way, which turned out to be a risky but great decision. This musical continues to pack theaters and receive positive reviews and has audiences in tears with laughter. How can you not laugh at songs like “Hasa Diga Eebowai,” “Spooky Mormon Hell Dream,” and our favorite “Turn It Off.” Also, the decision to change the Uganda warlord name from General Konvin to General Butt Fu**ing Naked is priceless. Kevin Clay as Elder Price led the cast of Mormon proselytizers with his ever-cheerful demeanor as a new evangelist for spreading the word. But the night goes to Conner Peirson playing Elder Cunningham; Pierson played the role to perfection and should go down as a legend in “Book of Mormon” his-
tory as Elder Cunningham. Special applause also goes to Andy Huntington Jones as Elder McKinley. His role as a Mormon fighting his same-sex feelings with the song “Turn It Off” is to die for. This show that was awarded nine Tony Awards for Best Musical and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album is a must see, can’t miss performance. We tried not to laugh and keep our usual review face on, but this in your face musical brought out our giggly side. “The Book of Mormon’s” popularity has reached places like Stockholm, Oslo, and Copenhagen and has grossed over $500 million making it one of the most successful musicals of all time. This play that makes fun of various Mormon beliefs and practices, in the end, endorses the positive power of love and service, but not necessarily The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ faithbased views. Let’s Play highly recommends this -musical so make sure you pick a day to see this play at The Oriental Theatre.

THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
Charlie Wilson
Uncle Charlie Wilson Headed to the United Center By Marshelle Sanders Defender Contributing Writer Charlie Wilson has made several hits in the late ‘70s and ‘80s as front man of the Gap Band. The pioneering R&B/funk group charted classics such as “Outstanding,” “Yearning for Your Love,” “Burn Rubber on Me,” “You Dropped a Bomb on Me” and “Early in the Morning.” Wilson has proven that he is still climbing the music charts with his latest album (2017) “In It To Win It.” He has just finished hitting the road with Bruno Mars for the 24K Magic World Tour, and he isn’t planning to slow down anytime soon. Charlie Wilson will be at the United Center this Friday, November 30, 2018, with Special guests Joe and En Vogue. Not only will he be giving his all to his Chicago fans, but he also tells the Defender what he has been up to lately while making moves. “I released my ‘In It To Win It’ album in 2017 and since then I’ve been on the road touring and blessed with sold out shows around the country. I collaborated with Snoop on the song and video for ‘One More Day’ from his ‘Bible of Love’ album and just completed eight dates touring with Bruno Mars on his 24K Magic World Tour in Minneapolis, Detroit, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Honolulu.” Wilson states that touring with Mars was a blast and that he loves him and his music. The THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
icing on the cake was that he was able to close out the tour in Mars’ hometown of Honolulu for a historic moment-- where the show was the first ever to sell out three nights at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu. “I had so much fun, and it was an incredible experience to share that, and something I will never forget.” In the years between the Gap Band’s heyday and his solo success, Wilson survived drug and alcohol addiction, homelessness and prostate cancer. He chronicled his odds-defying life and career in his 2015 best-selling autobiography “I Am Charlie Wilson.” Sober now for 22 years, the singer says, “I wouldn’t have believed I’d be where I am right now. That’s why I shout every night because I thank God for allowing me to be here.” Wilson discussed the transformation of his health routine since his September 2008 prostate cancer diagnosis. As with many men, it was at his wife Mahin’s advising that he had an annual check-up. It was the screening PSA and physical exam that caught his prostate cancer early. He has undergone treatment and is now cancer free. “I can hardly believe it’s been ten years. My whole life changed. Although I am cancer free, I still keep an eye out on my health with regular check-ups. It is important to maintain a clean lifestyle and that includes working out and eating healthy.”
According to statistics, “African American men are 61 percent more likely to develop prostate cancer compared to Caucasian men. Black men are nearly 2.5 times as likely to die from the disease.” Charlie has continued to spread the word for African-American men to get tested for prostate cancer. “The statistics are scary, but Black men still aren’t talking about it,” explains Charlie. “Many brothers out there don’t get checked out because they think they can overcome anything, or they think getting tested will take away from their ‘manhood.’ Well, for years I’ve been performing, now it’s time to start informing. A man dies from this disease every 18 minutes. Prostate cancer is serious business.” As a tribute to his 22 years of sobriety, helping homeless addicts and educating the African American community about prostate cancer, Wilson was honored at the 2018 NAACP Image Awards with the first-ever Music Makes A Difference Award. “It was truly an overwhelming experience to receive this award,” stated Wilson. “Numerous people have been by my side these last 22 years, and the most important person is my wife, Mahin.” Wilson continues his reign as “Uncle Charlie,” the lovable nickname originally given to him by Snoop Dogg, being one of the most highly sought-after adult www.chicagodefender.com
entertainers for today’s top HipHop and Pop artists. “The first person to start calling me ‘Uncle Charlie’ was Snoop Dogg over 20 years ago. The name stuck, and I’m thankful to see how it continues to resonate with so many generations of fans and artists.” If you have your tickets or are arranging to go to the concert, be prepared for a good time; Uncle Charlie’s raves that you’re in for a treat and he represents for men on how to treat their lady. “We’re going to have a party! I’m going to perform my number one solo hits and GAP Band classics with my band and dancers in tow. Ladies remember to bring some flat shoes because you’ll be coming out of those heels - trust me! Love is a powerful word, and as men, we need to let our women know that we love and respect them,” stated Wilson. “So, when guys bring their ladies to my show or have this album playing during a romantic dinner, they know I am speaking for them.” Wilson is looking forward to continuing to tour and making new music. A new album is also in the works. The inspiration behind his music is to have fun and make music that is uplifting, helps spread love and feels good. He also conveys that to his audience when performing and he likes to collaborate with others as well. He has been to many other major cities in the United States and even other countries, but there’s something about Chicago that makes it rise to the top of his
list. “Chicago is one of my favorite cities to perform in. I love the people and the energy the city brings out to my shows. I just want everyone in Chicago to stay strong. I know a lot is going on right now but we can never give up hope and need to keep our communities and country in our prayers.” Wilson underscores that declaration with his latest album, “In It to Win It” (P Music Group/ RCA, Feb. 17, 2017) which was nominated for three 2018 NAACP Image Awards, Outstanding Male Artist, Outstanding Duo, Group or Collaboration and Outstanding Album. The set boasts two number one singles which hit two different Billboard charts in April 2018. “Chills” was #1 on the Adult R&B chart and “I’m Blessed” ft. T.I. was #1 on the Hot Gospel chart. He also received a Rhapsody & Rhythm award in May 2018 from the National Museum of African American Music, scheduled to open in Nashville in 2019. Wilson has achieved ten No. 1 singles, 11 Grammy Award nominations, a New York Times best-selling memoir and ongoing sold-out, coast-to-coast tours. Charlie Wilson has proven his point and isn’t planning to slow down anytime soon. “I’ve been in this game for many years, I’ve had some big hit records and sold many records. However, I need to show people that I’m still in it. It’s championship time.”
