The museum would be built on grounds of Pilgrim Baptist Church. A proposal by businessman Don Jackson for a National Museum of Gospel will be revealed this week at a press conference at IIT. The museum will highlight the genre, the artists and Chicago’s rich history as the birthplace of Gospel Music. The venue will bring tourism to the city’s South Side. Gospel music was born on Chicago’s South Side, a new and wholly American genre imagined into being by blues musician Thomas A. Dorsey in the wake of a personal tragedy, and nurtured inside the historic Pilgrim Baptist Church in the city’s celebrated Bronzeville neighborhood. This unique form of Christian music was part of the cultural attraction in the Black Metropolis, a destination that attracted tens of thousands of Black Americans migrating from the South to the North. That beginning, and the rich history that followed, will be examined and celebrated at the new National Museum of Gospel Music, to be constructed on the grounds of the famed Pilgrim Baptist,

located at 3301 S. Indiana Ave. The historic Bronzeville structure, designed in 1890 by world renowned architectural firm Adler & Sullivan, was demolished and left in ruins following a devastating fire in January 2006. Don Jackson, CEO of Central City Productions and founder of the Stellar Gospel Music Awards, is leading the project, which he hopes to open in September of 2020, the month designated by former President Barack Obama as Gospel Music Heritage Month. “In the words of one of our strongest supporters, Rev. Clay Evans, a legend in Chicago’s religious circles and in gospel music, ‘We have Soldier Field; We have Navy Pier; We have the Chicago Bulls, but we do not have a gospel museum, and this is what we need.’’ said Jackson, who created the first and oldest annual televised awards show honoring gospel music artists for the past 32 years.

Betty Shabazz at her husband’s funeral. By Mary L. Datcher Senior Staff Writer The symbol of racial equality and integration during the 1960s was Dr. Martin L. King, Jr., but the role model for Black independence and empowerment was Malcolm X. A prominent member and national spokesperson in the Nation of Islam (NOI) under the leadership of Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X gained popularity through his influence of building the membership of NOI. The son of a Baptist minister, his parents, Earl and Louise Norton Little, fled their home in Omaha, Neb., because of their beliefs in the teachings of Black Nationalist leader Marcus Garvey. The threats from the White supremacist group the Black Legion would soon follow the family to Lansing, Mich., where Earl Little’s body was eventually found over train tracks. After the death of his father, Malcolm’s life would never be the same and took a turn that would introduce him to the ill fate of the streets. He served time in prison and converted to Islam. When he was released, he joined the NOI. His influence and public persona would grow, and his marriage to Betty Shabazz in 1958 would produce six daughters. After growing discernment and tension in the NOI, he chose to leave, starting his own organization— Muslim Mosque, Inc. His departure from the NOI in 1964 would lead him to a pilgrimage to Mecca where he would begin an eye-opening discovery of Islam—spanning across cultural and racial lines. After countless FBI surveillance and wiretaps, monitoring his every move—he was warned of constant death threats. At one point, the family home was firebombed while everyone safely escaped—a few days later the 39-year-old fearless leader would be assassinated on February 21, 1965, by members of the NOI. Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz: Ilyasah Shabazz Speaks on Their Legacy imity of the shooting—his youngest child at the time had no recollections of the brutal murder. At 2, Ilyasah Shabazz would be followed by two additions to the family when Mrs. Shabazz gave birth to twin girls later that year. Over the next two decades, the daughters of Malcolm and Betty Shabazz would live a nearto-normal life in the community of Mount Vernon, NY, attending boarding schools and away from the media glare. Growing up in the middle Ilyasah Shabazz class suburban community, Ilyasah Shabazz recalled how her mother would make sure the family understood the man her father was outside of the public persona. Malcom, Muslim and Racism “My mother, she kept all our father’s belongings in our house so we always knew daddy. She would talk about him all the time. If we did something great, she would say you know ‘daddy would be so www.chicagodefender.com

proud of you.’ And if it wasn’t so great, ‘daddy wouldn’t like that.’ We got it,” she said. “We made sure that we knew about our father and his humanity, understanding and knowing the person. This meant that you understood that you knew this person of compassion, of love—someone who was really smart, brilliant and focused on what his work was about.” Although we can recall the powerful images of Malcolm by the window equipped with rifle—standing his ground, Mrs. Shabazz did not live by the media image of her husband. “She didn’t focus on injustices in society which is quite the climate of the day. Also, she didn’t focus on the hate and the racism. She focused on daddy, the loving, kind man that he was.” Coming in contact with her first incidence of racism, Ilyasah remembers an incident involving a high school classmate whose home was burglarized. “I had a very good girlfriend and her house had been robbed and she said, “those n*ggers.” I was really shocked. N*ggers? I remember her apologizing and saying, ‘well you know you’re not black, black’,” she said. continued on page 4

The incident left her with not much surprise but more with understanding how ignorant people can be regarding prejudice. But, it was in college where her experience with Black students would shape a clearer perspective of people in general. As a student at State University of New York at New Paltz, it was assumed she would represent the same virtues and images of her father and perform in the same mannerism-- especially from fellow Black students. The backlash was surprisingly daunting. “I think that was painful. With White people, it didn’t matter because for me if it was something against Black people, I knew it was their perspective and they were ignorant as far as I was concerned. But when it came to my own people whom I grew up thinking ‘we were great,’ it was one of the most painful experiences.” What was taught in her household was the achievements and history of the positive influences of African Americans. She thought, “There was nothing wrong with us. There was no bad there. We were just great. So, when I went to college and here we are all young people and we’re finding our way and defining ourselves and whatever we’ve experienced in life is who we are—that was painful for me. I was really a very friendly person—door wide open. Then I experienced some things that weren’t that great.” Going home and upset, she asked her mother if she could move off-campus, and without hesitation, her mother said yes. “I was really grateful for that. But my mother had six daughters. She was paying for each of her girls to go to school. How difficult had that been for her? Although she never showed it because she wanted us to feel proud. She only focused on building us up and not letting us see what could break us down. How grateful I am to her—just to be the woman she believed in. And because of that—I felt invincible.” Dr. Betty Shabazz died on June 23, 1997. Meaning Behind Books An adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Ilyasah Shabazz has authored several books including her memoir “Growing Up X” (2002); a children’s book, “Malcolm Little: The Boy Who Grew Up to Become Malcolm X” (2014) and “X” (2015), the novel for young adults. “My children’s book is for children to see themselves in a positive manner and also learn something good about themselves as well as provide more accurate information to my father’s childhood and foundation. His parents were very significant in his life and in the [Marcus] Garvey movement. My father basically stepped into his father’s shoes and it’s a really beautiful story for me.” Her books have won numerous literary awards. She also received an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work, Youth Teens, for “X”, the novel. Writing and telling the stories of both parents is an important way of revealing the truth in their legacies. “It’s funny when I was a child I loved writing. My mother made sure that we had books. What I write is not so much for me, but it’s to make sure the information about their lives is accurate,” said Shabazz. “When young people are reading them, they are able to find a correlation between themselves and whatever the information is that they are reading and understand their power, value, responsibility back to society, responsibility to themselves and sometimes to their families,” she said. “We think of history and we know that there was a ‘rites of passage’ that we taught young girls how to be women and young boys how to be men. And now that is no longer a part of our lives; I think it’s important to make sure that our young girls understand all of what it takes to be a woman,” she continued. “For our young people to understand those things and when they read, they’re able to find stories with which they can identify.” Shabazz discussed the special relationship between Marcus Garvey and her grandfather, who at the time was 4 December 6 - 12, 2017

Malcolm x and Betty Shabazz’s daughters. the president of the Milwaukee Chapter of the Garvey movement. At the time, Garvey was a frequent visitor to the Little household and was arrested for alleged mail fraud to quiet his independent influence of Black citizens. “My grandfather, who was a young man at the time, sent a letter to President Coolidge suggesting that or encouraging him to have him released from jail because the charges weren’t true. When you see the letter, it reminds me much of Malcolm because he says, ‘if you do good work, not only will history remember you but God will remember.’ That is in the childhood book. The young adult book is about the challenges of losing your parents and not being able to fulfill the dreams they said you could fulfill.” Growing up, she said Malcolm was the top of his high school class and aspired to be a lawyer to help people but was discouraged by one of his favorite teachers who believed Black people’s role was reduced to labor related jobs. “Just thinking of the pain in that and not having parents to say ‘No, Malcolm you can do this, you can be all the things that we said you can be. Then that journey of finding himself. So that’s a young adult adolescent book. I have a book that’s coming in January called “Betty Before X” and it’s a beautiful story of a young brown girl in the 1940s in Detroit discovering herself.” Young Betty Betty Shabazz grew up in Detroit during the Great Migration when Black Southerners made their way to northern cities trying to find better jobs and opportunities. In the post-war era, the meatpacking industry was considered big business. Susan Peck, the wife of reputable pastor Rev. Peck, organized the housewives of Detroit to boycott the meatpacking district and the companies providing the products. “The church had thousands of members in their congregation including Thurgood Marshall and Paul Roberson—very historical people visited the church. It was there where these women got together and said if this industry is making so much money and they are not hiring our husbands, then we’re not going to spend our money here. So, the Detroit Housewives League became a national organiwww.chicagodefender.com

zation started right in Detroit,” she said. “In my book, you get to follow Betty on her thoughts of fashion with her girlfriends, going to school and being able to march--marching because Leon Mosley was killed by a police officer, seeing the similarities in life during this time. What did they do about the injustices? It inspires and encourages all children to see that these were the things that were happening back then--much like what’s happening today.” Preparing for the January 3 release of “Betty Before X” is one of many projects and obligations that keep Ilyasah Shabazz busy with speaking engagements and traveling on the road. She recently was in Chicago, as an ambassador for the Harlem Fine Arts Show at her father’s namesake college, Malcolm X. The three-day event brought out hundreds of attendees who participated in seminars, workshops and the opportunity to purchase great visual art by renowned and rising artists. As a devout Muslim woman, she makes a point to dispel the prejudices of Islam and the fear associated with understanding the differences. “I think it’s unfortunate because terrorism and terrorists have been defined for a reason. I was on a panel in Turkey talking about xenophobia and Islamophobia and what is a terrorist? Well it’s not even accurate; to say that most who identify as Muslims [are linked] with terrorism is the same as identifying Black people with crime. It’s all fictitious,” she explained. “That gives someone the opportunity to start bombing, invading countries, taking oil, land and resources—among all these other things.” She said she and her siblings continue to talk about the great works of their parents, as trustees for Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center and Malcolm X Foundation. “I’m very proud because I understand the significant contributions that our ancestors made. It’s my and our responsibility to make sure our history is properly recorded. We honor our people, considering all that we gave to world history. In Islam, I have an inner peace to do the work that I do and to be balanced in understanding that I’m not a second-class citizen.” THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

POLITICS

Donna Miller Is Southland Proud and Ready to Serve By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer Donna Miller knocked on as many doors as necessary (and then some) in order to secure the number of signatures she will ultimately need to unseat incumbent sixth district Cook County Commissioner Edward M. Moody in the upcoming election. With more than 1,500 local resident petition signatures collected -- four times more than the required amount -Miller said she intends to become the new voice representing the Southland. She said Moody’s appointment presents a “challenge” among the people as he was not elected to the office. “Now that people have the opportunity to vote, to be involved in the process, I think that’s going to make people more involved,” said Miller. Miller previously sought elected office in 2012 when she challenged incumbent Ill. State Sen. Napoleon Harris (Dist. 15) in the Democratic Primary where she was defeated. Harris would go on to win the general election. She said she learned following that campaign to “remain vigilant.” “I didn’t give up on my community or stop being involved so I think that’s what it takes to keep building and keep building coalitions,” said Miller. “I also learned issues based politics are so important. You have to have something that you care about; you can’t just run because you want to do it.” Miller, a healthcare professional for 25 years, said it was her professional background along with her desire to do more good that inspired her to run for office.

Donna Miller “I’ve kept going to different meetings and had different conversations that involved health care, which is definitely my wheelhouse. I just felt like someone who has this expertise should be sitting at the table and addressing these issues that I have dealt with for many years and have seen firsthand from ... covering Cook County hospitals [as] a drug rep,” said Miller Beyond her health care focus, Miller said it’s time to create “synergy” between the various levels of government to create business opportunities in the region. She said she also wants to take a look at the various tax options to find ways to make the district more competitive while also expanding. “I feel that if we all work together, we can bring busi-

nesses to the people who need them but also create something that’s never been done before... maybe there is a business partnership that can be worked on,” said Miller. Identifying the issues facing Cook County’s sixth district is of prime significance to Miller. The district consists of the municipalities of Harvey, Dixmoor, Olympia Fields, Country Club Hills, Chicago Heights, Calumet Park, and more. Miller said due to the district’s proximity to Will County and Indiana, its issues are unique. “Don’t forget about what happens in the south suburbs; it may not be the same as the issues on the South Side, North Side or the West Side [of Chicago],” said Miller. “We have our own unique challenges and differences that one has to continuously point out.” For instance, Miller said the sugary beverage tax introduced at the county level was felt “immediately” by businesses throughout the sixth district who witnessed firsthand consumers travel outside of Cook County to do their shopping, which was not limited to just sugary beverages but to a number of items. Moody was one of several commissioners to vote for the tax, according to a report by the Chicago Tribune. “If you’re going to go to Jewel in Will County, why not stop by Target and pick up a few other things, or you might go shopping at Old Navy and people were saying that as common conversation,” said Miller. “We in the Southland need to make sure that not only do we have businesses that want to come here but also that we are benefitting from any sort of economic recovery that’s happening in Illinois and the nation.” For more information about Donna Miller’s campaign, visit friendsfordonnamiller.com/

Mural by Kerry James Marshall Honors Women A gift to the city, Kerry James Marshall’s largest artwork to-date honors 20 iconic Chicago women. Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), alongside internationally renowned artist and MacArthur Fellow Kerry James Marshall, recently unveiled his epic, large-scale mural on the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Washington St.). The mural honors 20 women who have shaped the city’s vibrant arts and culture landscape. The 132-foot by 100-foot mural is the largest artwork Marshall has ever designed or created. “Kerry James Marshall’s new mural on the iconic Chicago Cultural Center is not just a celebration of Chicago’s legacy of public art, but it is also a continuation of creativity and culture that continues to inspire us,” Mayor Emanuel said. The mural is funded by Murals of Acceptance, whose goal is to bring art to all people in a free public setting. Murals of Acceptance was founded by Chicago native Kevin McCarthy and is supported by Marc and Lynne Benioff and by Patricia Arquette and David Arquette. The mural is located on the building’s Garland Court façade, between Washington and Randolph Streets. COMMUNITY Austin Alums Hope to Breathe New Life Into School and Community Through Sports By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer Two former Austin College and Career Academy hoops standouts are planning to lead their alma mater into a golden age of academic and athletic prosperity. Newly hired ACCA athletic director and boys varsity head coach Troy McGee did not expect to return to his old stomping grounds much less in a capacity to help change the culture of his school and community. In a conversation with the Defender, McGee, who was varsity girls head coach at Christ The King School for four years and has coached girls’ basketball for 10 years total, and new junior varsity head coach Michael Miller discussed their plans for the future. The conversation was held in McGee’s office on the third floor of a four-story colossal of a school located at 231 N Pine Ave. “I never thought I would be back in my former high school,” laughed McGee, a graduate of the Class of 1991. “It’s actually a joy to come back and give back because this is something [Miller] and I talked about in the past.” McGee recalled speaking to Miller prior to being offered a job at ACCA. He said Miller inquired if he had already taken the position of head coach, one he had not been offered yet, and through sheer serendipity, a week later he was offered the position along with athletic director. He said Miller was among the first people he reached out to to help him transform ACCA not only into a basketball powerhouse but into an academic one as well. Miller, a graduate of the Class of 1995, remembered he was one of many who looked up to McGee from the community. Miller recalled discussing with McGee the importance of leading with education so the next generation of Austin

residents may be in position to change the community. “When Troy and I had the initial conversation about what he planned to do, I bought into it immediately because it made sense,” said Miller. “I probably wouldn’t have believed him if he told me, ‘Mike, we are about to win a bunch of championships so come here with me’. With the lack of financial stability in this community if we can send three or four young men or ladies to college on athletic scholarships, that’s a victory for us. If we continue to send every year two or three guys and ladies to college, I figure that’s better than any state or city championship that we could ever win.” Giving students a realistic view of success coming out of ACCA was of high importance to Miller and McGee. Post high school graduation Miller played basketball at Triton Junior College and McGee received a full basketball scholarship to play at Tuskegee University. “[The student athletes] feel like they can win games, but are they looking at a championship this year? No. But are they looking at when they leave here they could earn a college degree? Absolutely,” said Miller. “Why? Because [McGee] did it from here, I did it from here, it’s not just talk.” Miller said providing children especially those in single parent households with viable activities after school will make a world of difference. “What we noticed is the ones that bought into what we told them student first, athlete second, they’re flourishing right now,” said Miller. “We don’t have a team of the most heralded kids in the neighborhood; we have a team of kids who needed a second chance, kids who needed a bit of special attention, and we feel that that’s what we need around here.”

Austin College & Career Academy junior varsity boys head coach Michael Miller and athletic director/varsity boys head coach Troy McGee have come back home to improve their school and community for the next generation. Listed among McGee and Miller’s goals for ACCA are: increase student enrollment, produce “entire teams” on the honor roll, and send student-athletes to college. McGee estimated “75 percent” of their players are already honor roll students. Increasing enrollment is of special importance to McGee because he said during his tenure roughly 4,000 students were enrolled. Today, only 227 are officially enrolled at ACCA, according to ACCA’s profile on Chicago Public Schools’ website. He said so far this year they’ve received 240 student applications to attend ACCA compared to last year’s estimated mark of 47 applications. He attributes the increased number of enrollment applications to the “new excitement” surrounding the school along with the work done by ACCA principal Patricia Reynolds. “I think it’s our job to educate our kids about things outside of basketball, life outside of basketball; being a productive citizen-- that’s our goal,” said McGee. Wendell Phillips Academy Celebrates Second State Football Championship in Three Years By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer The celebratory prep rally was on at Wendell Phillips Academy HS (WPA), 244 E. Pershing Rd., as elected officials, alumni, well-wishers, and students decked out in Wildcat blue and white honored the student athletes responsible for the school’s second state championship in three years. The undefeated Wildcats (14-0) defeated Dunlap HS (13-1), 33-7, to capture the IHSA Class 5A championship at Huskie Stadium at Northern Illinois in Dekalb on Nov. 25. The victory further solidified WPA’s place in Chicago Public School history as its 2015 state championship was the first ever won by a CPS school. WPA previously competed in the IHSA Class 4A division to win their first title. Kicking off the joyous occasion was the WPA drill team, majorettes, cheerleaders, and mascot who all gave rousing performances-- so much so that WPA principal Matthew Sullivan joined in on the fun with moves of his own. Sullivan emceed the festivities, which included speeches from Ald. Pat Dowell (3rd Ward), Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, and several other dignitaries. Emanuel applauded the football team’s “drive, dedication, and determination” for their success. He went as far as to say WPA’s burgeoning football program is worthy of another “d” for dynasty. He took the moment to also acknowledge WPA’s accomplishment of three consecutive years of 100 percent college acceptance including 11 million dollars in scholarships. “These kids are champions on the field and off the 6 December 6 - 12, 2017

field,” said Emanuel. “They’re not just champions on the field, they’re role models off the field and in the community and they create family.” Following the prep rally, McAllister called the energy surrounding the championship “like Star Wars with everything moving so fast.” “I kept saying, ‘these young men deserve everything coming their way’ so for them to take a break, hit the pause, and just appreciate everything as it comes...lightning has struck twice,” said Sullivan. Sullivan noted in order for WPA’s players to perform on the field, they first had to demonstrate they could perform in the classroom. He said the football players are positioned to be role models for the entire student body. He said 100 of the school’s 630 students participated in football this year, which allowed for the creation of the first ever freshman team that also enjoyed great success. “If they’re not academically eligible, they don’t play; it’s as simple as that,” said Sullivan. “We’ve had starters not play in playoff games and those expectations have been set at the beginning of the year. [Head coach] Troy McAllister does not waiver on that at all. Period.” McAllister called the past few weeks “fun” to coach the players as well as work alongside his coaching staff. He echoed Sullivan’s sentiment about the value of academics amongst the players changing the culture of a school on the field and academically. “I think sometimes the football team really has the ability to change a school,” said McAllister. “If the football players are leaders in our school and they’re going to class and if they’re getting the grades, then maybe some of the other kids who aren’t as involved with extracurricular will www.chicagodefender.com

want to get involved with something-- not necessarily football but maybe our chess club or maybe play on our soccer team.” McAllister said he thinks the school has become recognized for its football program at this point. He said over the years several WPA players have gone on to play collegiate football at the NCAA Division I to NAIA level. He said currently seven of his players have offers to Division I schools. “If you’re a young man in 7th or 8th grade in the City of Chicago, I don’t think there’s a better place to go for an opportunity when it comes to football and academics,” said McAllister. McAllister said that his seniors have “set the tone” for his underclassmen. He said over the past two years they’ve had two strong groups of freshmen who initially struggled with expectations but eventually found their way as the season wore on. “When [the seniors] came in, we still had our issues with changing the culture in our program, and I think they sometimes realize what not to do and I think they saw a little bit of that and progressed from there,” said McAllister. Senior running back Craig Elmore, who played on both state championship teams, called this year’s title “special.” He is the only player in CPS history to have won two state championships. He ran the ball for 76 yards on 18 carries for two touchdowns along with a catch for 23 yards in this year’s championship game. “It’s an unbelievable feeling to go out like that,” said Elmore. “Sophomore year I didn’t take it serious so senior year I knew I had to get it done so I played every play like it was my last.” THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Honoring the Lives Of Several Chicagoans Special condolences to families of: Mae Bridgeforth Melendez Hodge, who recently died. She was born in Athens, Ala., in 1918. She moved to Chicago in 1936 after completing a year at Alabama State University. In 1942 she married Stanis S. Melendez, M.D. To that union Carmen Melendez Rhinehart and William S. Melendez were born. Mae continued her education and received her B.A. in Primary Education from Chicago State University (Chicago Teacher’s College) and later her Master’s Degree from LaVerne University. Following her divorce from Dr. Melendez, she met and married at- Mae Bridgeforth torney Woodrow W. Hodge; to that Melendez Hodge union Donna Renee Hodge was born. For 42 years until his death in 1994, she and Woodrow built a life of entrepreneurship and love. Mae taught primary education in Chinatown, Woodlawn, Englewood and Hyde Park. She worked alongside her beloved brother Bill rehabbing homes throughout the city, owning several in Hyde Park. A long-time resident of Hyde Park, Mae was active in politics, assisting attorney Claude Holman in being elected alderman of the 4th Ward and her brother in law, Judge William Sylvester White, throughout his political career. She was most proud of helping Harold Washington become elected the first Black mayor of Chicago and supporting her cherished son-in-law Vernon M. Rhinehart in his quest for a judgeship.

She took great pride in her civic work with NAACP, receiving “The Most Distinguished Woman Award” in 1969 for raising the most money for the organization. Throughout the years, she along with her sister George, actively raised money for the Harriet Harris YWCA. Her dedication to community and philanthropic causes were very close to her heart. She served as president of the South Side Community Art Center and later, along with a group of dedicated members including her sister George brought First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt to the center. Mae was a member of the Illinois Children’s Home and Aid Society CHASI, charter member of the Jet Set (later becoming the Chicago Chapter of the National Smart Set), a charter member of the Windy City Links, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, The Club bridge club and The Crochet Club. An opera singer in her own right, Mae continued her love of the Opera by working with the Bravo Chapter of Lyric Opera and often attending operatic performances with longtime family friend, Dr. Jerome Lee, Jr. Her love of gardening was evident as she would host everyone in her Hyde Park garden after the Hyde Park Kenwood Community Conference Garden Walk, of which she was a member. She and her sister George hosted celebrities in her home, including Sammy Davis Jr., Ozzie Davis and Ruby Dee. Tim Bradford was a Committeeman of Richtownship. He was elected Commissioner of Water Reclamation in 2014. He was the first vice chairman of the Democratic party. The devoted husband and father had 4 children, one of whom preceded him in death.

Funeral services for Bradford will be held on December 9 at New Faith Baptist Church International in Matteson. The wake is from 9:30-10:30 a.m.; the funeral begins at 10:30 a.m. Distinguished educator and artist Dr. Jean Harvey Lightfoot died of heart failure in November, 2017. After completing her Ph.D. at Northwestern University, she went on to hold prestigious careers at multiple institutions of education. Dr. Harvey Lightfoot passionately believed that being educated positioned everyone to leave a positive impact on the world; this was exemplified throughout her impressive academic and professional career. In the 1950s, Dr. Harvey Lightfoot was a featured soloist for the Fisk Jubilee Singers. She dazzled audiences Dr. Jean Harvey Lightfoot around the United States and Europe during her tenure with the group. The Fisk Jubilee SIngers were founded in 1871 to tour and obtain money for college. Jean was one of the earliest members of the Fisk Jubilee Singers. She leaves behind an impressive legacy of academic excellence, artistic beauty and positive change. She will be missed by many people, including her daughter Jaronda Patrice Lightfoot Hall, her son Lee Michael Hall, her two granddaughters Jorie Leigh Hall and Jaya Mychal Hall and her nephew/son Phillip Ronald Harvey (Alia Jones).

Namaste Labs’ CEO Shawn Tollerson Talks Brains, Beauty and Being Black By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer Since the 1960s, Chicago has cultivated a great deal of entrepreneurs who have built their fortunes on the beauty and haircare industry. For Black-owned companies who have paved the way from Soft Sheen to Luster—many have sold off to bigger conglomerates or foreign ownerships. With an estimated $7.5 billion spent by African-American women on beauty and hair care products—only one major international haircare corporation is headed up by a Black female CEO. Shawn Tollerson has climbed the corporate ladder throughout the years, starting as a writer for a hair care brand, moving into brand management and working on several marketing campaigns. She joined Namaste Laboratories three years ago as Chief Marketing Officer, gradually making headway with her efficient management style landing at the top spot as CEO.

The company was acquired in 2010 by Dabur International, a company whose holdings include several health and hair care brands across 35 countries and is based in Dubai. Namaste Labs is headquartered in Chicago and recently relocated to the West Loop. Organic Root Stimulator (ORS) is a familiar brand that has built a large audience and recently received a facelift through a special marketing initiative. Tollerson says the No Stereotypes campaign was an award-winning campaign that focused on the consumer being “who they are” and breaking through stereo barriers. “Speaking to consumers about the fact that no matter what your hair type or texture, we should celebrate who we are and love each other because God made us and our hair types. Sometimes people judge us when they see our hair a certain way whether you’re smart or whether you are pretty or whether you’re right for this

Shawn Tollerson particular job,” she said. “So, working with Burrell Advertising, we’ve been able to create this campaign. When I was chief marketing officer for Namaste, it really was a groundbreaking breakthrough versus just a pretty beauty ad.” Working on this campaign, Tollerson was able to bring together a strong team of women who understood their core consumer—Black women. “We really cut to the core of who we are as a culture and from that role I was promoted to COO as chief operating officer. In that position I was able to work with operations, finance, human resources, legal and really trying to get some infrastructure into the company. We worked really hard to rebuild some of the foundation. Later, they asked me to become the CEO.” For a year, in her role as the company’s CEO, there have been some changes, but she is confident the team is in the right direction. As they move into 2018, they are revitalizing a long-time product of the ORS family—the Olive Oil brand. “The biggest focus for us right now is the refresh of Olive Oil. We’ve had this brand around for over 20 years. The last time it’s been refreshed was about 2012. It needed to get an update. We have to add new things to increase our relevance. So, we’ve been able to do that and now our focus is going to be in ensuring the brand really does provide the customer what she’s looking for.” Tollerson grew up in South Carolina, married her high school sweetheart and attended the University of South Carolina, where she studied Journalism. After graduation, she entered the hair care industry by default but soon learned by fate—her journey began. “I come from a very humble beginning. I don’t come from wealth. I started very much in the projects of South Carolina. I paid my way through school and I didn’t intend to become a CEO of a hair care company. That was not the intention. But one thing I always loved is us; wherever I’ve

www.chicagodefender.com

been in my life, I appreciate the struggle of who we are and what we mean,” said Tollerson. Without the support of her husband she said, the road would’ve been bumpy, but marriage and motherhood has kept her grounded. She says, “I think you have to marry your best friend because you change over time and that person has to know who you are, and you have to know who they are. I’ve been very blessed in my career to have been able to facilitate and bring to life a lot of the things that help us as a people.” Running a multi-million-dollar operation in a billion-dollar industry, Tollerson feels Chicago is the right city despite the lure of bi-coastal markets such as New York City and Los Angeles. “Chicago is in the middle of the country so when you want to do a focus group, Chicago is a great place to know the heartbeat of the consumer. We’re in the middle so we’re not too extreme one way or the other. I think when it comes down to consumer intelligence, Chicago is an amazing spot to be.” In 2017, there are fewer Black owned corporations controlling a dominant share of the Black hair care and beauty market share than in the 1970s. With more startups breaking on the scene, encouraging the spirit of entrepreneurship—Tollerson says more African American executives must head up companies who benefit from our consumers. “You have to be at the table and we can’t be afraid to raise our voice when it’s not correct. I have been extraordinarily fortunate in my career to be a very strong voice and I won’t let anything go. Regarding the “no stereotypes” campaign, we’ve hit a lot of sensitive spots. By having an African-American female team, we have placed on point—it shows through our connection,” she adds. “I always say you have to invest in each other. We have to help pull each other up. I feel if we don’t do that, we leave people behind.” THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

LowDown Brass Band: New Music in A Unique Way

City.Life.Style

By Mary L. Datcher Senior Staff Writer When musician and composer Lance Loiselle formed The LowDown Brass Band, he had no idea his love for New Orleans brass sound would cultivate into a fusion of funk, soul, reggae and hip-hop influences. Nearly 15 years later, Loiselle leads a group of talented musicians, emcees and composers—each bringing a unique skill to the table and onstage. Loiselle says, “It’s like a natural progression when we started out. The band’s been together for 15 years. We started out as a New Orleans cover band and it just kind of evolved over the years. The writing got better, the production got better, and we were writing a lot of songs. Many tunes had that hip hop flavor and it just seemed like an obvious next move to bring in emcees,” he explained. “I worked with Anthony [Billa Camp] for years on other projects and I knew he had his own solo project called The Dread. He’s done some really great things with it. It just seemed like the obvious next step was to add the emcee portion, and its really just kind of grown from there.” As the lead emcee for the band, Southside native Billa has built a solid following for the past 12 years in the hip hop band Trill Logic and The Dread. In addition to writing his own rhymes, he handles a great deal of the video edit-

Billa Camp (left) and Lance Loiselle (LowDown Brass Band. Photo by Mary L. Datcher ing and social media for the band. Although Chicago has bred a great tradition of bands from Earth, Wind and Fire to the rock music of Chicago— Loiselle says it was the influence of New Orleans’ Dirty Dozen Brass Band who made the most impact on his musicianship. “I grew up listening to the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. I’ve idolized this one player from that band. They really changed the game as far as what brass bands sound like starting out from the late 1980s. They’ve been together since the 70s and they were working for over 40 years.” He says learning from them, he noticed how they blended the traditional New Orleans sound as well as mixing funk elements including creating a signature sound. “Over the years they worked with hip hop artists such as Chuck D, NAS and a bunch of different hip hop artists on different tracks,” said Loiselle.

Billa, who grew up in the “wild 100s,” attending school in Morgan Park—eventually moved north when his family left the neighborhood. His love for the music transcended, listening to other artists in the early 1990’s. “For me definitely The Roots heavily influenced me to enjoy live instruments with hip hop. I feel now I’m kind of addicted to the live sound. I love rock. What’s a track? I love that part of it, but it’s something about when those instruments hit in their room, those drums start cracking and it’s just like you can’t really beat that,” said Billa. After commercially releasing four full-length albums, the LDB is gearing up to release their fifth CD, “LowDown Breaks,” which delves inside their love of Jazz meshed with organic hip hop grooves brought front and center by some of the best lyrical architects of the Chicago hip hop scene. With collabos from familiar names –Ang 13, Fada Dougou, Will Silas, DJ Alo and other notable guest musicians— the album took close to two years before the final mix was down. Between his job as a CPS teacher and wearing several hats for LDB, Loiselle admits it’s a labor of love. “DJ Alo who’s also the DJ for The Dread but he’s also a wellknown DJ/producer throughout Chicago community he did some production on an album with the song ‘Ghost Town.’ We made these transitions going from some songs so we would take a horn sample or a drum sample and we would kind of flip it and turn it into a transition going from one song to the next so that’s another element of the ‘LowDown Breaks’,” he said. LDB will offer a sneak peek for Chicago fans at Subterranean located at 2011 W. North Ave. on Saturday, Dec. 8 at their CD release party. The CD officially drops in January 2018. If you miss them, no worries—the band has performed 150 shows for the past four years building fans around the world. Make sure to catch them at a town near you—you will not regret it.

#TheBIGS Presents: The Chicago Elite Classic Proves Chicago Is Still A Basketball Mecca This Week’s Top 5 High By Terrence Tomlin & Eugene McIntosh Sports by #TheBIGS It was a packed house at the UIC Pavilion for the 6th annual Chicago Elite Classic, and everyone from Mayor Rahm Emmanuel to local hip-hop legend Bump J was there to see Chicago’s best talent take on some of the nation’s top teams. With 3 of #TheBIGS Top 5 High School Hoopers set to showcase their game, the Chicago Elite Classic proved to be settling in as one of the premiere high school basketball showcases in the entire country...and The BIGS were courtside for all of the action! Let’s take a look back at some of the best matchups from this weeknd. Beasley 40 South Loop 32 FINAL (8th Grade) In a matchup that featured some of the younger up and coming talent on the 8th grade level, there should be no surprise that the shorties came ready to ball! The Beasley Bees got an eye-opening performance from Beasley’s Keon Richardson who dropped 16 points in their 40-32 W over South Loop. Beasley’s Lance Rogers did the dirty work with 8 rebounds and 8 blocks. South Loop’s Lavor Lindsey led them with 10 points of his own. Proviso East 67 Simeon 52 FINAL (Ladies) The Chicago Elite Classic deserves major props for not turning a blind eye to our lady hoopers! Proviso East wasn’t shy at all about getting shots up! The Pirates were led by senior Deliyah Brown who poured in a double-double with 22 pts &11 boards. Junior Keimari Rimmer matched Deliyah Brown with a double-double of her own with 17 points & 11 boards. Aneesah Morrow was fought through foul trouble most of the game but put up 18 points of her own for Simeon. Homewood-Flossmoor 40 Whitney Young 32 FINAL (Ladies) H-F’s outstanding guard play and tough defense got them an 8-point win over the always tough Whitney Young Dolphins. They held Young to 18.9% from the field. Aireal Dickson had 15 points and Zarrea Coleman chipped in with 11 pts & 9 rebounds. Gray Collegiate (SC) 79 Kenwood 64 FINAL The team from “South Cack” was a bit too much for the Broncos as they took a 7-point lead into halftime and never looked back. Top 50 nationally ranked prospect Juwan Gary led 4 players in double figures with 23 points. RJ McGee finished with 25 points for Kenwood.

Morgan Park 82 Champaign Central 66 FINAL MP was without starting center Tamell Pearson (eye surgery) so the “Big 3” of #TheBIGS #1 ranked Hooper Ayo Dosunmu (24 pts/The BIGS #1 Hooper) Cam Burrell (20 pts/16 rebs) & the self-proclaimed “Point God” Adam Miller (18 pts) got the job done for the Mustangs. Champaign Central was led by Grand Canyon University commit Tim Finke with 18 points on 5-18 shooting. Sunrise Christian (KS) 56 La Lumiere (IN) 47 FINAL National powerhouse La Lumiere came up short to the equally talented Sunrise Christian. Top 5 point guard in the nation and DePaul recruit Tyger Campbell didn’t have his best game as he shot 4-18 and finished with 11 points. Vashon (MO) 81 Whitney Young 74 FINAL Vashon’s “Super” Mario McKinney was a human highlight reel the entire night . Providing plenty of oooh’s and ahhh’s on the way to his 33 pts & 7 rebounds, it was a huge win for the 2-time defending State Champs of St. Louis and the type of performance that made the entire weekend worth the price of admission. Vashon’s Cam’Ron Fletcher poured in 18 points & 13 rebounds of his own. #TheBIGS #3 ranked Hooper Javon Freeman scored 22 points but was held back by foul trouble the entire game. Simeon 54 Chaminade (MO) 50 FINAL The Simeon Wolverines kicked off their season in the finale. Defense prevailed as #TheBIGS #2 ranked Hooper Talen-Horton Tucker got two key steals down the stretch to seal the deal for the Wolverines. However, Head coach Robert Smith was not impressed. “We’re just a bad team” he said, pointing out that Simeon shot just 31% from the field, 13% from deep & 62% from the line in their first game of the year. Never the less, it was a strong debut for Horton-Tucker who finished with 21 points & 11 rebounds. Chaminade was led by Jericole Hellems with 22 points. #TheBIGS Chicago Elite Classic MVH (Most valuable Hooper) “Super” Mario McKinney - Vashon (MO) McKinney gave the people what they came for....a show! Acrobatic finish after finish as well as leading his team to the W, the junior guard said postgame that his goal is to be the first player in school history to win 3 straight state titles. And based on this performance, you’d have to believe he has a shot!

School Hoopers

By Eugene McIntosh & Terrence Tomlin Sports by #TheBIGS This past week, we had Curie v Orr in a matchup of two Chicago powerhouses; then there was the 6th annual Chicago Elite Classic at the UIC Pavilion. Between all of this hoop, 6 of the top players on The BIGS radar were in action. The latest installment of “The Bigs Top 5 Chicago High School Hoopers” brings yet another shakeup in the rankings as a new hooper enters our rankings! 1. Ayo Dosunmu (Sr- Morgan Park) - Ayo led the Mustangs to a 82-66 win over Champaign Central at the CEC. After having a tough night (0-11 from 3) in his first game of the season, he scored 24 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in the victory over Champaign. He is on a mission this year and says he will get better as the year goes. Head coach Nick Irvin holds his leader accountable anytime he sees him lacking. Last Weeks Rank- #1 2. Talen Horton-Tucker (Sr- Simeon) - In his first action of the year, Talow didn’t have his best shooting night (8-21) but played a complete game and got a key steal down the stretch to get Simeon a 54-50 win over Chaminade (MO) in the CEC. He finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds...he showed a couple of next level moves. Last Weeks Rank- #2 3. Javon Freeman (Sr- Whitney Young) - Freeman played less than half of the game due to foul trouble in the 81-74 Young loss to Vashon (MO). He fouled out and ended with 22 points in 15 minutes of play in the CEC. I asked him why head coach Ty Slaughter kept him out of the game for so long. “I don’t know....I asked him the same thing,” Freeman said. Last Weeks Rank#3 4. George Conditt (Sr- Corliss) - Conditt basically moves up by default due to last weeks #4 Ty Mosely (subpar game in a loss to Curie) falling out of the top 5. He hasn’t played since the last ranking but the versatile center has Julian and Perspectives Tech on the schedule this week. Let’s see what he’s got! Last Weeks Rank- #5 5. Adam Miller (So- Morgan Park) - Entering the top 5, Adam had a solid showing in Morgan Parks win at the CEC. He showed a solid game scoring 18 points (4-5 from 3) with a variety of pull up jumpers, a strong finish at the rim & an NBA step back 3 from the corner. “I’m a killer on the court. I don’t call myself a point guard...I call myself a point God!” Nuff said! Last Weeks Rank- Knocking At The Door “Knocking At The Door” - DJ Steward (Fenwick), Ty Mosely (Orr)
