City News Timothy Russell Named Vice Pres. of Community Engagement at WWCI Window To The World Communications, Inc. (WWCI), parent organization of WTTW and WFMT, recently announced that Timothy Russell will fill the position of Vice President of Community Engagement. In this new role, Russell will be responsible for crafting and executing community engagement activities for the organization. He was previously Chief Global Diversity and Inclusion Officer for CDK Global, and throughout his career, Russell has been a leader and changemaker focused on community affairs, philanthropy, and diversity and inclusion. In his previous role at CDK Global, Russell led the development and execution of diversity, inclusion, and community investment plans and strategies. Before that, he served as Director, Global Diversity and Engagement for PepsiCo; he has more than two decades of experience in the public and private sectors including leadership roles at Sara Lee Corporation and the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation. In addition, he was a Policy Associate for the Chicago Jobs Council and the Assistant Director of the Paternal Involvement Demonstration Project. “It is a privilege to be a part of an organization committed to diverse perspec-

My Brother’s Keeper Alliance Announces Winners of Community Challenge Competition My Brother’s Keeper Alliance (MBK Alliance), an initiative of the Obama Foundation, recently announced the winners of its inaugural MBK Community Challenge Competition. The Foundation selected 19 organizations across 10 states and Puerto Rico as national models to expand evidence-based initiatives to reduce youth violence, grow effective mentorship programs, and measurably improve the lives of boys and young men of color. There are ten winning “National Impact Communities” and nine “Seed Communities.” The Youth Guidance and Thrive Chicago has been named as a National Impact Community and the following will receive Chicago Seed Grants: BUILD, Inc., Lawndale Christian Legal Center, New Life Centers of Chicagoland, NFP and South Shore Drill Team & Performing Arts Ensemble (Chicago, IL) The winning communities represent every region of the country, strong public-private partnerships, and diverse cities, rural areas, Tribal Nations, and barrios of all sizes. Winning organizations

will share more than $5 million in grants, direct technical assistance, and evaluation support. Youth and leaders from many of the organizations participated in the Obama Foundation’s 2018 Summit in Chicago November 18-19. MBK Alliance also announced it will host MBK Rising!, its first national convening. MBK Rising! will bring together the growing network of MBK Communities and boys and young men of color-focused organizations, young men of color, elected officials, and cross-sector leaders to join President Obama to celebrate progress, spotlight what’s working, and uplift the voices of youth. The gathering will take place in Oakland, CA, in February 2019, marking the fifth anniversary of the initial launch of My Brother’s Keeper by President Obama. New Program To Help Older Women Take Control of Their Careers FIFTY+ is a new program specifically designed to help women age 50 and older enter or re-enter the workforce. Research shows that older women face special challenges in their job search, but we also know that age plus experience equals success. The program is offered monthly to cohorts of 10-15 women who meet twice per week for two weeks. Through a targeted mix of intensive coaching and training, participants will: •identify areas of career interest •update their resumes •practice interviewing skills •learn or improve computer skills; and, •develop a plan for finding work and establishing careers. Who made the deadline to run for mayor? By Charles Preston Defender Contributing Writer Just one month after the historic governor’s race in Illinois—where both candidates spent record amounts of money—Chicagoans look toward yet another election. And this time it is for the top office in the city, mayor. When current Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced in September that he wouldn’t run for re-election, the already large pool of candidates immediately expanded. Candidates had until last week to file petitions to be on the ballot in the February 26, 2019, election. Twenty-one candidates made the deadline. Now challenges to their petitions are being reviewed, which will probably reduce the numbers before the election. However, for now, here is a snapshot of all of the candidates who have filed petitions to run for the next mayor of Chicago: DR. WILLIE L. WILSON Age: 70 Party: Democrat Education: Doctor of Divinity degree from Mt. Pullman and Roseland residents recently joined Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Chicago Alderman Anthony Beale (9th Ward) and others for the grand opening of the new $20 million, state of the art Pullman Community Center. “This is a classic case of ‘Field of Dreams.’ If you build it, they will come,’” Emanuel told those gathered for the ribbon cutting. More than 300 residents were on hand for the opening celebration including youth from the area who wasted little time utilizing the facility. Among them were more than 150 students from Poe Elementary, Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep, Corliss High School and Carver Military Academy who provided music for the event. Built on 12 vacant acres donated by U.S. Bank, the community center will provide a safe haven for youth and others who utilize the facility. “We’ve been working on this for four years,” David Doig, president of the nonprofit Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives, said during the ceremonial groundbreaking. “Pullman is one of Chicago’s oldest and most unique communities. George Pullman spurred the Industrial Revolution. We’re not that ambitious, but we look forward to the revitalization of this community.” Described as the region’s largest multi-sport and education center, the 135,000-square foot facility has three indoor, regulation size, synthetic turf playing fields, three hardwood courts, and year-round, organized “after-school” and dayoff recreation and education programs for all ages with a focus on growth and well-being, as well as the community’s revitalization. The Roseland Youth Center and the Chicago Park District co-own the Pullman Community Center. The Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives developed the site the center was built on. The new Pullman Community Center is the latest among $300 million in new project investments undertaken and completed over the last several years that have created 1,300 jobs since 2015. Other projects include a new Whole Foods distribution center, construction of a second Gotham Greens greenhouse; the 111th Street Gateway Retail Center and Food Hall; Pullman Park; the Artspace Lofts (now under construction) and more. Chicago Native Harry Lennix Brings The Story of Jesus Christ to Theaters in ‘Revival’ By Clarence Waldron Defender Guest Writer Famed actor Harry Lennix has produced a spiritual masterpiece with his new film Revival! It opens in Chicago December 7 at the Marcus Theatres in Country Club Hills. Revival is an imaginative retelling of the gospel according to John the Apostle with contemporary gospel music with elements of Broadway and screen epic combined. Lennix says he was inspired to produce the piece after someone asked him at New Antioch Church of God in Christ in Los Angeles what were his plans for the drama ministry. “Immediately I thought ‘why don’t we do that old thing that we always do?’ But there was nothing outside of singing some songs or somewhat rudimentary things. I’d seen some churches do passion plays but they were always pretty sparse, going on for about 40 minutes maybe,” he says. He adds, “I thought something substantial where you could actually tell the story, the actual story, would be unique and tailor-made to show the Black expression of faith. I looked at gospel music and the spirituals and strung together a loose narrative with the help of my co-creator, Holly Carter.” He continues, “I had been in a seminary as a high school student and wanted to be as authentic to the story as I could, so I broke out my Latin dictionary and read it [the gospel of John] in Latin and just pieced together the story.” Revival! opens December 7 in theaters in Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Miami, Houston, Detroit, Dallas and Los Angeles. In January, it will expand to screens in Memphis, Baltimore, New Orleans, Norfolk, St. Louis, San Francisco, Cleveland, Orlando, Boston, Tampa, Indianapolis and Milwaukee. She made a call and the next thing we knew, we were sitting with Chaka Khan and Michelle Williams. I tell Holly all the time she can get into any room. She’s been in rooms to see people I can’t. She really is quite a resource as a creator, collaborator and a mover and a shaker.” Mali Music portrays Jesus Christ with great sensitivity. “He’s great,” says Lennix. “He’s a heck of a talent. It just so happened that Carter represented him. She was his manager. He loved the script and he said, ‘I can write the music for you.’ He does an amazing job as both a composer and as an actor.” Lennix portrays Pontius Pilate who presided at the trial of Jesus and gave order for his crucifixion. “The actor got caught in a snow storm and couldn’t make it. Since I had written the part and it was last minute, I decided to play it.” Lennix describes how he wants moviegoers to feel after seeing Revival! “We want them to re-engage creatively and spiritually with the message of Christ’s ministry, that He brought a message of love and peace. He confronted the traditional status quo of hierarchies. He concerned Himself with compassion and healing. He dealt with the people who needed Him most. He wasn’t in any way an elitist, on the contrary. I think at this time people are feeling very tense and unsteady and unstable about things, politically and economically, geopolitically. This is the perfect message. This is the perfect time. I want people to take away from Revival! that they are empowered to be creative spiritually.”

He graduated in 1986 from Northwestern University, where he received a degree in Communications with a concentration in theater. Let’s Eat: The Burger Point By The Black Foodies Gourmet burgers are here to stay and chefs are now being very creative, combining unconventional flavor profiles to create a burger experience that people will never forget. Nestled in Chicago’s South Loop at 1900 South State Street, The Burger Point (Owner and President, Michael Strotter), has an impressive list of gourmet burgers on the menu. The Burger Point uses 80/20 grass-fed beef cut from the brisket (no hormones, antibiotic or fillers), providing the perfect beginning for a superior burger experience. Miss Coretta and I sampled the Crunchy Burger. It’s a beef burger topped with double American cheese, a homemade French onion dip, then crowned with freshly made potato chips, all on a potato roll. The burger was lip-smacking delicious. The burger itself was fresh and juicy. The homemade French onion dip, paired with the American cheese, made for a gooey, finger-licking, delightful bite.

The house-made potato chips added a crunchy contrast in texture that was greatly appreciated. The soft potato roll was the perfect selection for housing this unusual, yet, fabulicious creation. On the downside, we suggest that this burger be reserved for dine-in eating. The potato chips topping the Crunchy Burger will become soggy if not eaten in a timely manner. Up next was the Gobb Father, The Burger Point’s take on the increasingly popular turkey burger. It consists of fresh, freerange turkey, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, fresh romaine lettuce and tomato, a chipotle aioli and a hearty pretzel roll. No dry turkey here, guys. It was very moist and satisfying. Miss Coretta said, “This burger is one o’clock in the morning good…when you’re having a late night and want a great burger, this is it!” The sweetness of the grilled onions came through, the mushrooms were not overly done (giving them a slight meaty consistency), the veggies were fresh, and the chipotle aioli had the perfect spicy kick. With the combination

of these flavor profiles, the Gobb Father was an outstanding turkey burger. Being a former vegetarian, I always appreciate a properly executed veggie burger. The Burger Point has a veggie burger they proclaim to be The Best Veggie Burger Ever. With a name like that, you know The Black Foodies had to try this sandwich. The patty is made inhouse and is potato-based with other veggies and spices, topped with Havarti cheese (semisoft Danish cow’s milk cheese), avocado, chipotle mayo, served on a 100 percent whole wheat bun. This veggie burger was, in the words of Tina Turner, “Simply the best.” It’s not just a top-five veggie burger, but I can say with confidence that this was the best veggie burger I have ever had the pleasure of eating. The patty itself had a smooth, creamy texture. While I feel avocado is food from the gods, the chipotle mayo is what tied this burger altogether, and the whole wheat bun was super-duper fresh. Each bite just melted in my mouth.

The Burger Point offers a menu item they call Burger Rolls, which is an Asian/American fusion of culinary cultures. It is a Chinese egg roll with a cheeseburger filling. Talk about some good eating – wish we had thought of this idea! The egg roll exterior was crunchy with a nice chewiness to it, and the cheeseburger filling was succulent and juicy with just the right amount of cheddar cheese. The accompanying special dipping sauce was similar to a pickled ranch. Miss Coretta really enjoyed it. While I felt it was okay, I would have preferred a sweet and sour dipping sauce in keeping with the theme of the dish. Dipping sauce aside, these Burger Rolls are an ingenious treat for the tummy. The Burger Point also does outstanding Wings, with a wide

variety of sauces to choose from. And, don’t snooze on their delicious Hand-cut Fries… our favorite being the truffle salt. But, truth be told, it is all about the burgers at this carnivores’ paradise. You can build your own creation from the numerous toppings offered or just order from their impressive menu. The Burger Point is now our goto spot for burger creativity and yumminess. Living Well Mental Health in the Black Community: Seek Help By Channa Smith Defender Guest Writer It was July 2016 when my journey to work on my mental health began. In the beginning, I sought support from family and friends, but I noticed that there wasn’t much of it. I’d get ridiculed for talking about therapy, followed by words like “stay strong.” I heard that I should be “over it by now.” At the Channa Smith time, I thought I was wrong, and that maybe I shouldn’t talk and confide in people about my problems. So, I internalized a lot of stuff that happened to me during this time, and I internalized it to the point that it put me in a very dark space. After I picked myself up and examined the people around me, I soon realized this issue was much larger

on Mental Health (NAMI), “only about one-quarter of African Americans seek mental health care, compared to 40 percent of Whites.” Studies further report that African Americans don’t like discussing mental health issues for some reason. Some don’t believe in it; others can’t afford treatment, many think it lacks importance. Honestly, the list could go on, but the bottom line is many members of the African American community don’t understand the importance of taking care of the mind and self. For that reason, they end up not taking it as seriously as they should, and they end up hurting themselves in the long run. When I think about all of the violence happening in Chicago, and all over, I can’t imagine what these families face. These families are struggling with seeing their loved ones’ murders broadcasted all over social media, but these families walk away hurting, battling for justice, and dealing with their loss being aired out all over for everyone to see. According to the Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, “African Americans are 20 percent more likely to experience serious mental health problems than the general population. Common mental health disorders among African Americans include major depression, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), suicide, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), because African Americans are more likely to be victims of violent crime.” African Americans are the ones who are affected the worst, but we are least likely to seek help with the issues that we face. I have been seeing more African American advocates showing their faces, telling their stories, and working to help others. This past August, I attended the 2nd annual Black Mental Wellness Expo, which was created by Camesha Jones, Kenya Atwater,

and Chanell Hill. The Black Mental Wellness Expo took place in Hyde Park and had some resources. After researching, I came across some advocacy going on in the HipHop world as well. On Noisey’s YouTube channel, I came across an interesting series that is shown on the Viceland network, “The Therapist,” which features Dr. Siri Sat Nam Singh sitting down and speaking with hip-hop artists about different things that have impacted their lives. Shows like these can help normalize therapy and allows people to know that it is perfectly fine to talk about your problems with a professional. In a clip I discovered on CNN.com from January 2018, Jay-Z sat down with news commentator Van Jones on “The Van Jones Show.” During this clip, Van Jones and Jay-Z discussed mental health and how important it is. Van Jones stated, “mental health, PTSD and trauma is rampant in our community. As scared as Black folks are of the cops, we’re even more scared of therapists.” Jay-Z acknowledged and agreed, stating, “It’s a stigma. As you grow, you realize the ridiculousness of the stigma attached to it.” I appreciated seeing Jay-Z and Van Jones taking the time out to spread awareness and reminding people that it’s imperative to vent and release these internal issues because they do affect you and your growth. 12 Voices On the Front Porch: Now, What You Hear is Not a Test By Shanita Baraka Akintonde 12 Voices I’ve rocked to the beat of Hip Hop for quite some time. I’m a four-decadelong, card-toting member of the Hip Hop Hurray community. Many people— family, friends, Shanita Baraka colleagues and Akintonde fellow club members—have questioned my allegiance over the years. I’ve heard the following: Why do you listen to music that degrades women? My response: You work for a company that doesn’t honor gender pay equity. Hip Hop is MUSIC. A CRUSADE must address gender dynamics such as unequal pay. Where’s your picket sign? How can you listen to that nonsense? My response: Nvm. G2G. Ttyl. I can’t understand anything they’re saying. I can see you need time to resume doing intellectual things, like reading one of President Trump’s tweets. But you’re a PROFESSOR — My response: Correctamundo. Aren’t you a wife and a MOTHER? My response: Correctamundo duo. My retorts are usually met with more confusion and disbelief. Rap music naysayers push Gospel playlists in my hand before walking away murmuring prayers. I’m neither saint nor sinner, but I consider myself SAVED. I’ve been blessed by a genre of music that has penetrated my soul in such a prolific manner that each word, phrase, PAUSE, grunt, enunciation, and verbal punctuation create a pseudo-Mountain of the Messiah in my life. It is an altar at which I happily and dutifully pay homage. Hip Hop was the soundtrack of my formative years. Its rhythmic beats landed in my young eardrums like bubbles on the end of a handheld plastic fizz blower. Its energy caused my auditory orifices to drape to the ground due to an overflow of wax. The liquid lava was courtesy of the turntables of master DJ’s like Kool Herc and Dr. Dre, in the latter’s pre-N.W.A., pre-Michelé breakup, pre-Beats by Dre days. As a teenager, the BEST beats dripped with lots of BASS. They tickled the tongues of all us pubescent kids in my South Side neighborhood better than grape Kool-aid. We belted out the licorice-laced lyrics with such fervor they became amplified anthems. Artists like Slick Rick created a concerto of happenings in the Black community—my community, in ways, no one has yet to mirror. It is for these reasons THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Hip Hop represents the complexities of Black life, a musical style that infuses truth-telling into rhyming speech. The result is a lasting, intelligent and influential subculture. It is an art form that unifies people whether they are Black, White, Red, Brown, Purple or Yellow. that I was hesitant to take a front-row seat during my recent family outing to see the award-winning musical Hamilton. It’s not that I didn’t want to see Hamilton. I had heard a lot about it. I’m a bibliophilic, history buff who also loves musicals. I knew it was a historical homage to a founding father written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and loosely based on a biography written by Ron Chernow. Hamilton is a name I am quite familiar with, for reasons other than its place in our country’s history book. The moniker dwells in my personal précises, too, as it was inscribed on the street signs that stood at opposite ends of the South Side neighborhood block that I grew up on—Hamilton Avenue. I was reluctant because I was concerned. I had a nagging feeling that my beloved genre of music, Hip Hop, had been co-opted, repackaged and resold back to me (and millions of other Americans) who saw or plan to see what is called an “innovative” approach to historical storytelling. What you talkin’ bout Willis? Hamilton is not the first place in which an MC-inspired megaphone has told past events. The entire genre of Hip Hop music is known as “the CNN for Black people.” Hip Hop artists have long told stories about issues and items which would have gone unnoticed if not for these artists’ unveiling of them, a practice that began over 40 years ago. Topics told are political and poetic and range from teenage pregnancy, police violence, Black mothers, Black fathers, drug use, and Black Love. Hip Hop has left no stone unturned; it is a MOVEMENT. Pioneered by lyrical geniuses whose ability to dissect, protract and reassess the Black experience in a manner so BOLD, so potent, so PROLIFIC that the entire world had to step back and take notice. Just like this country is doing while watching the predominantly Black cast in Hamilton take center stage. I enjoyed the play. It was fast-paced, well-acted and the music and singing were SUPERB. But while telling the story of one of our country’s founding fathers, I would have liked to have seen proper homage given to another group of founders—Hip Hop pioneers who created various style blueprints such as the one used in Hamilton. Forefathers like Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, The Sugar Hill Gang, Curtis Blow, Doug E. Fresh, Kool Moe Dee, and Run D.M.C. paved the way. Innovators such as Nas, Mos Def, Tribe Called Quest, N.W.A., Public Enemy, Slick Rick, Eric B. and Rakim, KRS-One, and Naughty by Na-

ture merged music and message. Others like Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, Method Man, Heavy D, and 50 Cent showed how thugs love. Femme Fatales including MC Lyte, Salt-N-Pepa, Queen Latifah, Lil’ Kim, and Yo-Yo implored women to Stop, Look and Listen and Stand Up for Your Rights. These rappers told Sisters it was alright to Cha Cha Cha as long as they remembered to Push It while holding things down and being held down, whether by a partner or a purpose. The women of that era did just that, while simultaneously anchoring their children in love and a sense of UN.I.T.Y. At the center of this harmonic Hip Hop hub are lyrical lions like Tupac, Notorious B.I.G., T.I., Busta Rhymes, Ludacris, Snoop Dog, Ice Cube, Outkast, Jay-Z, Eminem, Drake, Nicki Minaj, J. Cole, Lil Wayne, Kendrick Lamar, and Kanye West among others,
