Illinois Treasurer Frerichs Returns Purple Heart To Family of Vietnam Veteran Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs recently returned a Purple Heart Medal to Tommie Turner, brother-in-law of late Vietnam War Veteran Willie G. Riley, at a ceremony at East St. Louis City Hall. The Purple Heart is one of the most recognized and respected medals awarded to a member of the U.S. Armed Forces. Frerichs also returned military transfer papers, a savings bond, and jewelry that belonged to Turner and his late wife. The items were discovered in a safe deposit box that was surrendered to the treasurer’s office as unclaimed property. “As Veteran’s Day approaches, returning this Purple Heart is an incredible way to honor Willie G. Riley and his family for his service and sacrifice to this country,” Frerichs said. “We could not be prouder to have played a role in this reunion.” Riley served in the United States Army from 1967-1969 and earned a Purple Heart for his service in Vietnam.
Upon receiving the medal, Riley requested that his sister, the late wife of Tommie Turner, place the Purple Heart in her safe deposit box. The contents were surrendered to the treasurer’s office as unclaimed property after Riley’s sister passed away. Turner plans to give the Purple Heart Medal to Mr. Riley’s widow, who lives in New York. The treasurer’s office has more than 100 unclaimed military medals. Military medals are never auctioned and are kept until the owners or family members are found. The treasurer’s office is the custodian of unclaimed property, including lost bank accounts, insurance policy proceeds, and forgotten safe deposit boxes. Items are surrendered after private entities tried for at least five years to locate the owners. Because thousands of items are surrendered each year, residents should check I-Cash every six months. STEM Intern Program Returns in 2018 Klein & Hoffman, an architectural and structural engineering firm headquartered in Chicago, announced Tuesday that its intern program, developed to raise the interest of high school students in the sciences and engineering as professions, will continue in 2018. The firm partnered with a University of Chicago Charter School to boost STEM education through an internship focused on talented students in a challenged South Side neighborhood. The program launched in 2017. It delivered real-life work experience as architects and structural engineers to students Sanii Terry and Joshua Banks. Both are students at the UChicago Charter School in the inner city Woodlawn neighborhood. “100 percent of our students are accepted to college,” said Will Tor-
res, Chief College Officer at UChicago Charter School. “They are first-generation college students, and by being in a professional environment in downtown Chicago, they get a flavor for what it’s like to succeed.” Terry and Banks were the first students to complete the new Klein & Hoffman Summer Internship Program. The program was designed and set in an educational and friendly environment at the firm’s downtown Chicago offices to promote learning. The intern program will continue in the spring of 2018 at UChicago Charter School with incoming sophomores, juniors and seniors eligible to apply. STEM education is a curriculum based on four specific areas: science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Increased economic opportunity an important component of Gov. Rauner’s criminal justice reform goals Gov. Bruce Rauner was scheduled to announced Tuesday a new, innovative program to help formerly incarcerated men and women start their own businesses. The Pathway to Enterprise for Returning Citizens (PERC) program is the first of its kind in Illinois. In its pilot phase, the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) will screen candidates and select 125 people who are returning to communities on the south and west sides of Chicago. When they go home, they will receive in-depth training and coaching on how to run a business. This program will give them the opportunity to spur economic development and create jobs in the same communities in which they live. “One of my most important goals since taking office has been to fix our broken criminal justice system and give people a real chance at success when they are released from prison,” Rauner said. “This program not only allows us to create jobs in underserved communities, it also drives down the recidivism rate and sets families on the right course.” “We are laser focused on improving outcomes for the men and women who leave our custody,” said IDOC Director John Baldwin. “Many of them have entrepreneurial minds and this program is just what they need to hone their skills and build a better life for themselves.” Training services for the PERC program will be provided by The Safer Foundation of Illinois, Bethel New Life in the Austin neighborhood, Chatham Business Association, North Lawndale Employment Network, and Sunshine Enterprises, based in Woodlawn. Those who complete the program successfully will be positioned to receive a privately funded loan of up to $50,000 to launch their businesses. The Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority (ICJIA) will monitor the program. PERC is created through a public-private partnership between the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority (ICJIA), IDOC, the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) and the Chicago Neighborhood Initiative Micro Finance Group (CNIMFG), which will underwrite loans for the start-up capital. Boots On the Ground: Active Service, Resources & Veterans By Mary L. Datcher Senior Staff Writer What we deal with every day in the face of adversity is very little compared to the men and women who fight on our behalf for freedom in the United States. Most of us either have a veteran or we’re connected to someone who’s a member of the armed services in our family or extended circle. In this day and age, the survivors of World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War and the Afghanistan War on terrorism have left us with mixed emotions on protecting our rights yet protecting our loved one’s safety. In the last three decades, for our women and men who served, joining has become more of a choice leading to more benefits and opportunities through a technical skill or higher education in professional and law enforcement fields. But, having these goals in mind can be diminished once a soldier is on the frontline in a foreign country. The days of innocence gradually diminish as the days turn into weeks, weeks turn into months and the tour of duty can roll into years. Families left back home in daily anxiety, praying and hoping for the return of their loved one in one piece—body, mind and soul—can be asking for a lot. Yet, we quietly support their decision— fearful for them. Ask any veteran who safely returns back home from serving in combat war—it leaves psychological wounds that cut deeper than the physical bodily damage. When they return, many are not the same. Suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), treatment is necessary and sometimes the aftermath can breakdown households and families. We honor them for their service but do we help them in their darkest period? Since the Vietnam War, the U.S. has not enforced a draft allowing servicemen and women who voluntarily enlist to make up the country’s four branches of the milTHE CHICAGO DEFENDER
itary—Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force for combat. Also, those who serve in the National Reserve can be called upon duty of service when being deployed. According to statistical data gathered, we have approximately 2.4 million active and reserved U.S. military force personnel since 2015. The latest numbers conducted by the Pew Research find overall 15 percent of DOD active-duty military personnel are women, up from 11 percent in 1990. In 2015, 17 percent of active-duty officers were female – up from their share of 11 percent in 1990. And 15 percent of enlisted personnel were female in 2015, up from 11 percent in 1990. The share of women in the ranks varies significantly by service branch. Women comprise nearly one-in-five active-duty personnel in the Air Force (19 percent) but only 8 percent of all Marines. Women make up 18 percent of the Navy and 14 percent of the Army. Outside of the workplace, young Blacks and Latino high school graduates have chosen a path to the military as opposed to attending a traditional college path. Research has shown Blacks have consistently been represented in greater shares among enlisted personnel (19 percent in 2015) than among the commissioned officers (9 percent). The face of our military has changed with more people of color enlisting and slowly moving up in the ranks, but the historical discrimination is still very real for people of color, women and members from the LGBTQ community. The effects of combat in addition to the stress of dealing with an often-White male dominated military can have lasting scars for veterans being discharged from service. In our special Veteran’s Day issue, the Defender went deeper into the lives of active and retired servicemen and women and explored the challenges of organizations seeking to serve those who have served us, including the Veteran’s Administration. www.chicagodefender.com

Face of Service: Tweak G By Charles Preston Defender Contributing Writer Tweak G is a boisterous rapper and street activist from the Chatham/Auburn Gresham areas of Chicago. At a shallow glance, with a normalized lens of gender presentation, it is very easy to mistake Tweak as male. Tweak is adorned in tattoos and usually fashioned in Timberland boots, a fitted cap, and baggy denim. She is not only inherently unique in Chicago’s hip-hop scene and activist communities, as an unapologetic Black lesbian, she defies the typical idea of a soldier in the U.S. Army. “Whenever I’m in this uniform, people look at me different,” says Tweak. “People would salute me when I’m walking down the 9 [79th street] and would say things like ‘Thank you for your service.’” To her sergeants and fellow soldiers, Tweak is known as 24-year-old Jasamine Harris, an Army sixyear veteran. When called for service, she trades in her “men’s clothes” and microphone to wear the designated women’s uniform and helmet. The beginnings of this transition from civilian to soldier can be traced to when Tweak was a member of Doolittle Elementary School’s color guard team and Hyde Park High School’s ROTC program. “I was in ROTC all four years in high school. I didn’t want to do gym or P.E. All the girls gossiped and the guys just played ball. That was boring. I didn’t want to do any of that, so I chose ROTC. I was on the drill team. I was on the rifle team. I traveled and met a lot of people,” she says. “As I progressed through high school, the question came if I was going to college or not. My family 4 November 8 - 14, 2017
“To care for him who shall have borne the battle and his widow, and his orphan,” said Abraham Lincoln during his second inaugural address on March 4, 1865, after the end of the Civil War, which was America’s bloodiest conflict, leaving an estimate of 620,000 men dead in the line of duty. “With those simple words,” pointed out Floretta Strong-Pulley, retired Minority Veteran Program Coordinator, “we got the beginning of a law...Title 38, which has grown, and grown and grown.” Title 38 outlines veterans benefits, that at one point, only included healthcare for veterans, their children until they were 18 years old and their widows. Now a lot has changed. The Veteran Affairs (VA) tries to assist homeless veterans to rectify their situation through programs such as Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Administration Supportive Housing, HUD-VASH, which offers subsidized rent for chronically homeless and or disabled veterans. The VA also offers Homeless Providers Grant and Per Diem Programs, which offers transitional housing and supportive services for veterans since 1994. This program offers housing and healthcare support to veterans who are in dire need of assistance. Furthermore, the VA tries to provide jobs for veterans by offering the assistance of veteran representatives, whose jobs are to look at each individual veteran and try to help find a job meeting the specific needs for that person--whether the veteran continued on page 8

is broke as hell. I knew damn well I wouldn’t take out loans. I’m not trying to die in debt. It was only so much financial aid can do. To top it off, I was going through some things with my family and I wanted to get away.” These early experiences influenced Tweak’s decision to choose the military. With her skillset, the Army was an easy decision in contrast to staying the course of academia while being crippled by college debt. According to Tweak, a minimum wage job and limited options after high school did not compare to being
Veteran homelessness/poverty is a huge problem all across America. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates that over 39,000 veterans go to sleep homeless every night, and that 1.4 million veterans are considered “at risk” of homelessness (due to things like poverty, overcrowded/subpar housing and lack of support networks). Around 11 percent of all homeless people are veterans, around 45 percent of homeless veterans are either Black or Latino, and around 50 percent of veterans are in between the ages of 18-50. And Chicago is no exception. As of 2016, 16 percent of Chicago’s unsheltered homeless were veterans, which despite being lower than Chicago’s percentage from 2014 (27 percent), is still higher than the national average. So to explore the faces of service our veterans issue, the Defender profiled two organizations in Chicago dedicated to assisting those who have served our country. DOLL, INC and The Smith Residences Doll, Inc, run by Doll Smith, is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization that’s currently working toward building a village/community for homeless veterans suffering from PTSD, and providing them with “a community-based opportunity to live in a shared home that offers an opportunity for personal growth and development.” Doll, Inc also provides “diverse and unique services that will ensure progressive steps to help these veterans move from homeless shelter to transitional to permanent housing.” Doll, Inc was started in 2011, originally with the mission of assisting homeless female veterans and their families. However, when the company was moved over to the Ford Heights

Scott Drury For Illinois Attorney General: In His Own Words By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer The race for who will represent the Democratic Party as the candidate for the Illinois attorney general in the upcoming election just got a bit more crowded with Ill. State Rep. Scott Drury (Dist.-58th), a former federal prosecutor, entering into the fray. In a 30-minute conversation at the Defender’s office, Drury laid out his vision for how he intends to improve the state. In weeks past, he was a candidate for Illinois governor before opting to switch to become a candidate for Illinois attorney general. He explained that he made the right decision given his desire to help the state especially in light of incumbent Illinois attorney general Lisa Madigan’s stunning decision to not seek reelection. Drury acknowledges his role of Illinois attorney general would mean serving the whole state and not just the region in the north he calls home. “I don’t look at Illinois as southern Illinois or northern Illinois or Chicago versus the suburbs,” said Drury. “This is a state that has issues and the attorney general has to be someone everyone in the state can look to and say I can trust that person, that person is doing a fair and independent job and is out to protect me.” Drury offered this statement to the general public: “Here’s what I am about: the system in Illinois is broke and I believe you should not be afraid to stand up for what’s right and do the right thing,” said Drury. “The system is not working for citizens in Illinois. When I see injustice, when I see working families being taken advantage of, when I see an overall wrong, I’m going to stand up and fix it.” Transparency Drury was asked to address a pledge he made on his campaign website’s homepage, one where he states his desire to address Illinois’ image of corruption and pursuit of self-interest among its politicians. He said if elected, he intends to use the resources at his disposal to “redirect resources” to address different areas of concern. “We’ve been outsourcing all of the corruption investigation to the federal government, and I think there needs to be an internal watchdog in the state of Illinois and it has to start with the attorney general,” said Drury. “I think this office was really focused on consumer protection and I think the office should remain having that focus but it should not do that to the exclusion of other things.”
Ill. State Rep. Scott Drury (Dist.-58th), a former federal prosecutor, is joining the crowded Democratic Party ticket for Illinois attorney general. Policy on Gun Violence Drury said gun violence is at an “epidemic” level. He said addressing the needs within society that cause people to resort to using a gun for any reason is a start in the right direction. He also noted that increasing the length of sentencing for offenders has not worked and suggested he had ideas that will be beneficial to all. “Papers are reporting on Chicago, which certainly has a problem, but it’s spreading all over the state of Illinois, and I think the solutions that have been put out there by the general assembly have not been the right way to go about tackling the issue,” said Drury. “The solution is a comprehensive approach, investing in communities, investing in afterschool programs, trying to have job training in communities, bringing businesses to the community for those who want to invest there; the state has failed in that
respect.” Drury called for gun laws to be strengthened nationwide, not just in Chicago, and for continued collaboration between the federal government and law enforcement officers. “We need better laws nationwide to keep illegal guns from coming into Chicago,” said Drury. “Chicago could ban guns and you’re still going to have guns coming over the Skyway, coming up from Mississippi.” Responding to Chicago Police Misconduct Responding to accusations of police misconduct is an area of familiarity, according to Drury. He referred back to his days as a federal prosecutor where he had to prosecute a police officer for assaulting an African American man who was shackled to a wheelchair, which was all caught on video which resulted in the officer serving time in federal prison. He said his background and unique experiences working with police officers, prosecutors, and lawmakers give him a unique perspective. “When I was at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, I worked closely with the police, and a lot of the good police are serving and protecting, and we want them to be able to do their job and in order for them to do their job so that people in any community in the state can trust them,” said Drury. “They have to know if something goes wrong that they will be treated the same way as everybody else and I think right now there’s a perception, which can be valid, that there’s a different standard.” Immigration Policy Drury applauded the Obama Administration for the Dreamers Act and called the actions of the Trump Administration a “bait and switch” that tricked individuals and families to share their immigration information only for it to lead to unforeseen consequences calling it a “due process violation.” “The Constitution needs to be protected, it can’t protect some of the people some of the time,” said Drury. “Someone has to stand up for the Constitution and what it means and I will continue to do that. I want Illinois to be a leader on that issue, not a follower.” Drury has represented the state’s 58th district since 2013, an area which encompasses portions of Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Highland Park, Deerfield, Northbrook, and other municipalities. Cook County Democratic Committee Endorses Kwame Raoul for Attorney General By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Writer On Friday, the Cook County Democratic Committee unanimously endorsed State Senator Kwame Raoul for the Attorney General office, as well as passed the Sexual Harrassment Resolution. Cook County Chairman Joseph Berrios released an official statement: “Thank you to all the committeemen who unanimously endorsed State Senator Kwame Raoul for Attorney General. These times call for a strong Attorney General who isn’t afraid to take on Governor Rauner and President Trump, who has declared war against women, children, families, undocumented immigrants, and our safeguards. I am confident that Kwame will be a true advocate for our families in Illinois,” he said. “I am also very proud of the step that we took today as a party by passing a sexual harassment resolution. COMMUNITY Obama Foundation Summit Brings Together The Next Generation of Leaders By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer As the Obama Foundation moves forward with breaking ground in Jackson Park to undertake a five-year long process of building one of the most progressive presidential centers in the country—his team is laying the bricks to build civic engagement among the next generation of leaders. Bringing together a collage of leaders of nonprofit organizations, community and cultural stakeholders from around the globe, the foundation kicked off its first global Summit at the newly opened McCormick Place Marriott Marquis last week. The first day opened up with President Barack Obama welcoming those who traveled as far as India, Japan and Africa to attend the two-day conference, which brought together progressive thinkers through well thought-out breakout sessions, keynote one-on-one conversations and intimate dinner placements—engaging newly formed acquaintances and crossing over cultural and class barriers. In calm, cool and “Shaft-like” mannerism—Obama was both charming and very informed in sharing with attendees what’s at stake when there is no civic duty involved in the process of bringing about change. Although he admits social media was a powerful tool in gaining youth voters in his last two elections—he told the audience there’s more to the world than just a selfie. He says, “True social media – it is an amazing tool. But if it is blocking you from having a conversation or seeing somebody and recognizing them and listening to them because you are so busy trying to get a picture, then you are, I think in some ways, contributing to what separates us rather than trying to break through,” said Obama. “So that seems trivial, but that’s me. It also will allow Michelle and me to have actual conversations with you, which will be nice.” Mike Strautmanis, the Foundation’s VP of Civic Engagement, has met with hundreds of people from various communities and says this summit is the first step in the right direction to bringing together both Chicagoans and visitors from around the world. Strautmanis explains the mission of the summit. “It

We’ve known over time—one of the best ways to do that is to take people, bring them into a place and give them an opportunity to learn from each other, hear from each other and teach each other.” There were 100 Chicago-based participants out of the 500 overall attendees invited. The highlights of the summit included an in-depth discussion with Prince Harry, moderated by Ariel Investments’ President Mellody Hobson. They were joined by Chantelle Stefanovic, a Project Coordinator for Full Effect, a program of The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry based in St. Ann’s, Nottingham, England, and the President and Executive Director of The National A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum, David A. Peterson, Jr. Both Stefanovic and Peterson shared similar experiences in how there’s hope and burgeoning talent among youth in sometimes the lowest disparity areas. The conversation was enlightening and empowering as examples of their community work mirrored many who were in attendance.
Chicago Star Scholarship Shines For Students By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer In a few short months, West Englewood native Alisha Tuff will be transferring from Kennedy King College (KKC) with one degree in pursuit of another free-of-charge-thanks to the Chicago Star Scholarship of City Colleges of Chicago. Launched only a couple of years ago by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the Chicago Star Scholarship offers students who graduate from a Chicago Public School with a 3.0 GPA and test well in math and reading an opportunity to earn an associate degree at a City of Chicago college for free-- including tuition and books. Tuff, 20, a graduate of Chicago Bulls College Prep, is a Phi Beta Kappa honors society student who intends to major in physical science at Lindenwood University when she transfers. She said her goal is to work in professional sports to help rehabilitate injured athletes. “Going to a community college in my opinion helps you prepare for a four-year university,” she said. “I think some people shouldn’t jump into a four-year university not knowing how to handle themselves and then end up dropping out of school.” Finances played a role in Tuff’s decision to attend a City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) institution. She said her mother, a single parent, is already helping her older sister, 6 November 8 - 14, 2017
22, with her education. The current administration in place at KKC believes that it is offering prospective students a great opportunity for an education with an enviable price tag. Craig Lynch, interim president at KKC, said part of the enrollment process to the college includes a discovery conversation about what a prospective student’s intentions are in order to determine the best route forward. “If their goal is to transfer, we want to start to help them make smart choices about the courses they need to take to achieve their degree goals, and then we make sure that they get to the transfer center so they can understand what it takes to successfully matriculate into those fouryear opportunities,” said Lynch. Kenyon Douglass, director of Transfer Services at KKC, expressed her confidence in the quality of education at KKC especially when factoring in the cost of attending local schools within the Chicagoland area. She called CCC “trailblazers” for not just partnering with DePaul University, Loyola University, Northwestern University but with universities beyond the Chicago or even Midwest markets and for making sure students stay on track to adhere to the guidelines necessary to eventually transfer. “Many parents may not have income that they can afford a Roosevelt University and pay the $32,000, but if a student came to City Colleges and had that 3.0 GPA, they’re able to receive their education here for free, which www.chicagodefender.com

More than 40 percent of KKC students go on to earn their bachelor degrees at four-year universities, according to Douglass. KKC is helping to facilitate students’ transfer goals. During the month of November, the transfer center will be giving 10 minute in-class presentations, said Douglass. She said too that university partners like Governors State University work one-on-one with prospective transfers on a weekly basis. is recently unemployed and once served in Vietnam, to a new veteran just coming home from active duty. The veteran representative looks at various databases, referral lists and contacts in order to help ensure steady employment for the veteran. Moreover, the VA offers healthcare to veterans, providing 1,243 healthcare facilities all over the United States. There are 170 medical centers and 1,063 outpatient centers. Illinois offers 5 medical centers and 32 outpatient centers. Vet centers specialize in providing help for veterans who need to re-adjust to the civilian lifestyle or help dealing with Post-traumatic stress disorder. That being said, veterans who are struggling mentally and have subsequently gotten into trouble with the law, depending on the severity of the charge and whether or not it was a violent incidence, can attend a special veteran court, which will offer rehabilitation for the veteran through counseling and reformative programs that will hopefully get the veteran’s life back on track after a year of participating in the program. So, in an ideal scenario, a veteran, after serving his or her country and being honorably discharged, shouldn’t have any problem getting his/her life on track once he/she re-enters civilian life. But, as Strong-Pulley points out, life has a tendency of being less than ideal.

However, her identity and sexuality raised some issues in service. “A few soldiers assumed that just because I was gay, I liked them. My presence made some women feel uncomfortable. I had to constantly set the tone like, ‘Look I don’t want you. I’m not trying to date you. I’m trying to get trained and go about my merry way.’ Guys would assume that I would be having sex with all the girls, but it was not like that at all.” She then continues about race, “A lot of the dudes, particularly the White guys, would give me a lot of crap just for being Black and a woman. We would bump heads because I wouldn’t take what they would dish out. You’re not gonna talk to me any type of way. You’re not going to say anything and expect me not to stand up for myself.” Tweak states that the military holds “respect” as one of its pillars, and Black women, regardless of rank, have to work twice as hard to get it. She has witnessed Black women in positions of power have their authority challenged more frequently than their male peers. “When the White male sergeants walk through and give orders, everyone stands at attention. Now, take a Black woman with the same rank. Some of the soldiers would have idle chatter on the side. The same respect is not there. With me, I demand respect from everyone. Sometimes I get ‘the angry Black woman’ treatment or people tell me I’m playing ‘the race card.’ First of all, Black women get sexually assaulted the most in the military.” Tweak fights on several frontlines. Not only has she put her life in the hands of the United States military, but also her activism has yielded great wins for her community. In late December of 2014, Tweak and other members of Fearless Leading by the Youth pushed the University of Chicago’s Trauma Center to raise its age limit to 18, leading to more care for gunshot victims on Chicago’s South Side. In addition to this, Tweak has organized against police violence impacting Black women and girls. “It’s difficult to fight for a country that doesn’t fully recognize your identity back home,” says Tweak. “All these deaths of Black women, Black queer women, Black transwomen, Black men, Black transmen, and yet I still serve. This was my way out of a bad situation.” As Veteran’s Day approaches, Tweak believes there is so much that can be improved in caring for those who served in the military. “I have a soft spot for veterans. You have teenagers going across the seas to fight the Taliban getting paid $20K or $30K a year, but people playing football are getting paid millions. We have soldiers losing limbs and eyes falling out of their sockets only to come home struggling to survive. Floretta Strong-Pulley, retired Minority Veteran Program Coordinator at the VA, with retired servicemen. Veterans only represent a little more than 1 percent of the U.S population, and yet that still equates to 21 million Americans whose needs greatly contrast between one another. While one veteran may come back from a war or conflict physically and mentally strong and ready to rejoin society, there’s another soldier who has come back physically disabled, whose wife has left him and home has been foreclosed on. There’s another soldier who is dealing with extreme PTSD and struggling to get by on a day-to-day basis. More than 10 percent of veterans are homeless, even with programs such as HUD VASH and Homeless Providers Grant and Per Diem Program. While vet centers try to tackle the mental health issues of every honorably discharged veteran who seeks assistance, about 31 percent of Vietnam veterans, 10 percent of Gulf War (Desert Storm), and

projects, they found that they simply had too much space to only assist women, and thus, amended the vision to include both men and women. Since then, they’ve acquired 9.2 acres of land from Cook County and are working to turn those 9.2 acres into a fully fledged, 96 townhome village, where veterans will be able to live, get transportation to jobs/ job interviews, and live in a community of other people who’ve served. However, one barrier stands in their way-- funding. In order to finish this project, Doll, Inc needs to raise 18 million dollars, and they need to raise it quickly. They’ve had this project for three years, and because of how long it’s taken have been threatened by the Ford Heights Projects with rescinding of their ownership of the land. Smith said: “I’ve been working with the Buffalo Soldiers, UAW Local 551, Ace Hardware… All of these are veterans, coming out to help so we can move in veterans before it gets cold.” So now, in order to get all the funding they need, Smith and Doll Inc plan to continue pushing. They plan to network with as many people as possible, and to get government officials like Tammy Duckworth onboard and active. But most importantly, they simply need help. They need, in the words of Smith, “Anybody who has spare time who can do some volunteer work, make phone calls for us, help raise money… We just need people to help us get these units done, one at a time.” Volunteers can call Tina Augustus at (773) 931-2145. 8 November 8 - 14, 2017
“Doc” Habeel and his wife, Arnetha RTW Center For years, the RTW Veteran Center has been a fixture in the community, as a place where homeless veterans could go and receive three free meals a day, 360 days out of the year. It started with veterans coming to a fish fry ran by veteran “Doc” Habeel and his wife, Arnetha, and then coming back the next day for leftovers. And then the next day, for anything. That day, the two of them pledged that no veteran would ever leave their home hungry. When they started off, they could only afford to cook beans and rice. “My wife is from Alabama by way of the West Side, so she can do something with some beans, some rice and some cornbread,” Doc said. “If you got somebody that knows how to put that together, you won’t even miss meat. And for the longest, that’s all we had. Beans and rice for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.” In the springtime though, after asking the alderman for permission, Doc and Arnetha used the vacant lots next to them to start a garden to grow food and offset some of the cost of buying groceries.

While unemployment rates for veterans this year are lower than last year, about 4.2 percent of males, and 5 percent of female vets are unemployed The most troubling of all is the suicide rate for veterans. According to Veteran Affairs Mental Health Office, about 65 percent of veterans who take their own lives are 50 years old and older. Furthermore, the likelihood of a veteran taking his or her life in comparison with a civilian who has never served is 22 percent higher. Pulley-Strong says, “Do what you can, one veteran at a time, one veteran at a time...There will never be enough money allocated to all the things we need to do, that should happen.” If you notice a veteran having a difficult time and needs assistance, please call Veterans Crisis Line: 1-800-273-8255. However, because they didn’t fence the garden off, the garden became a free garden for the community, and children started to frequent the garden, as well as partake of the beans and rice. Once the children started asking for things to do to help them stay out of trouble, the Young Soldiers Leadership program was founded, a program that instills military principles and standards (such as honor, duty, respect and loyalty) in kids from ages 8-16. However, all this work, shared in large part between Doc and Arnetha, took a toll. In 2015, Arnetha’s health started to decline, and the building started to be hit with city code violations. By 2017, the program was understaffed, underfunded, and under pressure, and in January, the center closed for service. However, although the building was closed, the work didn’t stop-- without fail, the center’s volunteers picked up donated food every day from the Harvest Support program and dropped the food off to various local organizations and religious facilities who collaborate with the RTW Center. In addition, over a dozen families still regularly receive donations of food, clothes and furniture. And now, in November 2017, the RTW Center will open in a new location: the Chicago Medical Training Center at 7415 South East End, Suite 113, where they will work in tandem with other educational organizations in that building to give veterans job training and placements. With this new building, they hope to be able to return in full force, better than ever. As Doc said, “We may not be in the building, but we’re still in the house.”

Serving Those Who Served and Sacrificed By Danielle Romanick, Psy.D. Lydia Healthcare After the welcome home parties, parades, or ceremonies (if they occurred), what happens to the care that is shown to our military veterans? Who continues to care for them and assist them towards recovery of any difficulties, including physical injuries, reintegration issues, and mental health challenges? Mental health services for active duty military and veterans have a long history of highs and lows, including gaps in care and a stigma that is still active today. It seems that throughout history, the availability of psychological services and care increased in spurts rather than developed with a steady rise over time. These spurts usually coincided with military conflicts. History has clearly shown how military service and military deployments have lasting impacts on both the service members and their families that often extends past the active duty phase. Currently, service members are more likely to have families upon entry into service. They are also more likely to be married at a younger age and have young children at home than ever before. In addition to the increase in military family members, service members are experiencing longer and more frequent deployments than in prior wars and conflicts. In recent conflicts, namely those in the Global War on Terror, there has been an increase in dual military career couples or military-married-to-military couples in the United States. In military couples with children, the rates of longer and more frequent deployments could largely impact the children’s mental well-being and functioning including the child’s attachment to the deployed parental figure. Non-military spouses and partners of military service members are at risk for mental health issues as well as increased marital strife. For the current conflicts, approximately a quarter of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) service men and women will receive mental health care after returning home due to various difficulties, which could include anxiety, depression, difficulty managing anger, trouble sleeping, substance use, posttraumatic stress disorder, or suicidality. Where To Start The reactions of the veterans and their families to service, as well as the reaction of society in general, have helped aid the development of programs and services. What do you have to sacrifice from within to value your faith to become a respectable and respected man in America? What does it mean when your self-worth and honorable ways are challenged because of the lifestyle you chose to live? Can you measure a man by his identity and sexuality? In this day and age does it even matter anymore? Of course, it does; but to whom? Who can rightBrenda and Rick fully measure the worth of another without considering the power that McCain life places on the existence of us all? These questions and more are explored in “Choir Boy,” a coming of age play that is set at The Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys, which is committed to the development of impressive, honorable Black men. The play follows a group of teens who struggles with the meaning of sexuality and how the men at Drew should act. One student in particular, Pharus Jonathan Young (Christopher W. Jones), the vivid central character who is a bright-eyed, smart and enthusiastic Drew student, wants nothing more than to be the leader of the legendary school’s choir; unfortunately, he soon finds out that this position comes with a price. Although, Pharus doesn’t speak of his sexuality, he’s not trying to hide it either. While trying to covet the awe-inspiring title, he realizes that it comes with all kinds of complications of being a “Drew Man.” He also realizes that everything has an equal balance, how we pass down our Christian morals and what it means to be Black, male, noble and respectable in America. Even under the threat of expulsion, Pharus insists on behaving “as a Drew man should,” because he knows that he can exact his own private revenge against the very strict Headmaster Marrow’s (Robert D. Hardaway) nephew. He has the power to do this because he is the leader of the choir and can decide who can and cannot sing. “Choir Boy” is driven by gospel music, which is Drew’s tradition. They lived by faith but its traditional way of life is being challenged and the headmaster has no idea that the question of sexuality regarding Drew men is nothing new to the school. Darren Patin (David Heard) is another character in the play who is struggling with his identity and sexuality; he
believes that he has been called to be a pastor, but he finds himself in an uncompromising situation with one of his classmates. Tamarus Harvell (Anthony Justin “AJ” James), the straight guy that rooms with Pharus, brings a nice calming, non-judgemental friendship to him. Julian Terrell Otis (Junior Davis) is the devoted best friend to Bobby Marrow. Mr. Pendleton (Don Tieri) offers a refuge for the boys to speak freely in the classroom only if they can respect each other long enough to speak their truth. Playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney shares a story about human differences and bullying of people that live a lifestyle different from others by using a wide-range of characters who are willing to stand up for what they believe--indirectly and directly as they make a point by singing harmoniously together. Director Michael Menendian takes us to a world where music is the glue that bonds us together through old Negro spirituals and gospel music as we watch how five young men’s lives are intertwined together through song. The Weekend Was Filled With Awards, Scholarships and Fun! What a weekend! I was definitely Around Town! Let me start by congratulating Mr. Ned and Mrs. Christine McCray, a beautiful couple who are both retired Chicago educators, on their 65th Wedding Anniversary. The dinner was held at the Hilton on Cicero! I met a wonderful young author, Kenyatta Scott, who we need to keep an eye on; her book is “Violet Finds A Dollar” for elementary age children. You will hear more about her later. People are still talking about “Real Women Wear Bates” fashion show. The models were awesome and represented women and men of all ages. Thank you Barbara for allowing me to be among the chosen few! Oh What A Night! Kudos to the Urban League on an awesome event “Beyond 100, Together We Matter.” If you missed it, you missed a party! In the MIX: #Metoo Hits Home By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer As we feel the winter cold creep upon us, most of us are reaching back into our closets and grabbing what clothing is going to keep us warm and, yes, looking fabulous. Meanwhile, the #Metoo testimonies continue to expose more influential and high-profile men with a familiar face on the home front. Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr. has become one of the latest ones being accused of touching journalist Danielle Young in an allegedly suggestive manner. According to Young, the 76-year-old Civil Rights legend and founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, was a little too Mary L. Datcher “touchy,” she writes in an article for “The Root.” She recalls, “As I walked within arm’s reach of him, Jackson reached out a hand and grabbed my thigh, saying, “I like all of that right there!” and gave my thigh a tight squeeze. I was shocked, to say the least. Even though Jackson had had his hand reached out, I had no idea that he would touch me in a sexual way. I did what most women in an uncomfortable position do: I giggled.” A representative for Jackson released a short statement on his behalf: “Although Rev. Jackson does not recall the meeting three years ago, he profoundly and sincerely regrets any pain Ms. Young may have experienced.” Unfortunately, similar stories shared by other professional women among men of Rev. Jackson’s stature will be brought up because this behavior is more common than taking a sip of wine. The General Assembly has not filled the vacant spot of Inspector General for nearly three years, while 27 complaints of sexual harassment have sat there, according to Sen. Karen McConnaughay. Senator Ira Silverstein resigned last week from his role after a female lobbyist testified about his ongoing and unwelcomed advances. Oh… and this is just the tip of the “house of cards.” Yep…let’s see how that proposed sexual harassment hotline works out. Yes, as women we have to endure the typical line of “My wife and I have an ‘open’ relationship.” Really? Well, let us “open” the door so you can return to her and your kids. Is this a way for men to act-- as if a woman wants to sleep with them? This behavior is not at a club or on a street corner—this is coming from “grown ass” men who feel entitled because of their position, or social or financial standing. Why have people waited so long to come out the woodwork with their stories? Because all it takes is one individual to have the courage to stand up and let the “cards fall where they lay.” There would be no Rosa Parks without the social activism of Ida B. Wells and there would be no Ida B. Wells without the strength and fearlessness of Harriett Tubman. As much as the Black community upholds our women as the backbone of our households—what are we teaching our young girls when we ignore bad behavior from our men or men in general? The suggestive talk, the longer than usual back rubs, and passive aggressive punishment when we don’t give in. Men should be our protectors, not our aggressors, but instead we are their protectors— sometimes protecting them from accountability. Aaron Goldstein, a Democratic candidate running for Illinois Attorney General, released a statement regarding his disappointment for the Cook County Democratic Party’s decision in not endorsing him, but he also lashed out about gender discrimination. 16 November 8 - 14, 2017

He noticed, “After each candidate spoke to the Party, there was an opportunity for the Committeemen to ask questions. There are two women in the race, Sharon Fairley and Nancy Rotering. Only the women were asked if they would drop out of the race if they were not endorsed.” He points out that 84 percent of the Cook County Democratic Party are men. Although the party has endorsed Senator Kwame Raoul as their choice for Illinois Attorney General—it still

sparks questions on how tough females have it on every level in government. It would be interesting to hear Lisa Madigan’s viewpoint on such a heated topic of discussion. Not only has she maintained her seat as AG for the past 14 years, she has had to prove her ability to carry out the office without the shadow of Mike Madigan looming over her. Kudos to the Obama Foundation for producing an informative two-day summit last week at the new Marriott Marquis adjacent from the Wintrust Arena. Although media was restricted to certain events throughout the program—I was able to meet some really cool people in attendance. Shout out to Chance the Rapper for curating the concert that closed out the summit with awesome performances by Andra Day, Gloria Estefan, Nas, Brandi Carlile, The National, Emmy award-winning writers Aziz Ansari along with Chicagoan Lena Waithe. I was very impressed by Waithe who attended both days of the summit and took time out to talk to everyone who approached her. Her approachability was infectious and her pride for her hometown is equally so. We can’t wait for the debut of the Showtime series “The Chi,” executive produced by Waithe and Common. He worked for several years as a truck driver and had been retired for nearly 40 years. Veterans Day at Brookfield Zoo To honor the men and women who have proudly served our nation, the Chicago Zoological Society will host a special Veteran’s Day ceremony at the Brookfield Zoo. SPORTS Jordan Brand and Little Black Pearl Students Team Up for T-Shirt Design Contest By Terrence Tomlin and Eugene McIntosh Sports By #TheBIGS Chicago youth face a constant battle to defy the odds on their path to greatness. At every turn, they often face new challenges. Whether it be trying to allude a bogus reputation of being prone to violence or having to jump through loops and obstacles just to receive the most basic resources, the youth in this city are far too often counted out before ever getting the chance to reach their full potential. Every child, no matter their background, deserves a platform to reach their dreams and “fly.” Which is why since 2015, Jordan Brand along with Little Black Pearl Art and Design Academy have been giving Chicago
youth their “wings.” As part of Jordan Brand’s “WINGS” initiative, their community action program, Little Black Pearl offers a 16-week experience that gives participants the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the fashion design industry. With classes taking place at Jordan Brand’s flagship Chicago store at 32 South State Street, the Jordan Design Studio teaches students the fundamentals of design, marketing, merchandising, and making a business pitch. Throughout the program, students go through the process of designing a Jordan brand t-shirt, culminating in a winning t-shirt design being chosen and featured in the State Street store. With their 3rd session of participants just wrapping up their 16-week experience, the winning t-shirt design, created

store, Station 23. The winning t-shirt design was an ode to the city, with “Chicago” being spelled out using some of the most notable attractions around the town, including the Willis Tower and famous Navy Pier Ferris Wheel. “We worked really hard on this design and I’m very proud of my team that we were able to come together and make something so amazing come to life,” said Kamara Grayson, member of the winning t-shirt design team. In addition to having their winning t-shirt design sold in Jordan’s flagship Chicago store, LBPA students are granted access to apply for the Jordan Wings scholarship. To date, 14 LBPA students have received Jordan Wings scholarships with nearly 200 students receiving the Wings scholarships nationwide since 2015.
With The Bears At The Halfway Point, It’s Time To Play Teacher And Pass Out Some Grades By Terrence Tomlin Sports By #TheBIGS Before the season started, all signs pointed to the Bears being the doormat of the NFC North. Both fans and pundits alike were all but ready to punt this season away in hopes that the team formally known as the “Monsters of The Midway” would be in line for another top 3 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Fast forward to the halfway mark of this season, those same fans and pundits are eating their words as the Bears sit at a respectable 3-5 and have suddenly resurrected new life into their season. It’s now time to see just how long the Bears can ride this momentum of being one of the surprisingly solid teams this year, but before the guys start their 2nd half push, let’s take a quick look back on how we got here and pass out some midseason grades. THE OFFENSE: CIt’s very easy to forget the Bears offensive performances during the first 4 weeks of this season. Mike Glennon, better known as “The Checkdown King,” was touted as the perfect quarterback to ease us into the Mitch Trubisky era. The Bears plan was to slowly develop their prized rookie QB while Glennon lead the offense. Glennon was supposed to be a good decision maker, he was supposed to protect the ball, he was supposed to give this squad a chance

to win by making minimal mistakes-- he did none of those things. Instead, what we got with a “Jay Cutler Jr-ish”player, who made the same mistakes but had none of the arm strength of his predecessor. Mix this was the timid playcalling that has come to be a John Fox/ Darryl Loggains staple, the offensive grade could have been a big fat F…but the decision was made in Week 5 to scrap the failed Mike Glennon era and get an earlier-than-expected look at the future of the organization…Mitch Trubisky. The Bears are 2-2 in the “TRUUU” era, hence the grading curve. At the very least, Trubisky has given the Bears a true NFL level quarterback behind center, something they didn’t have with Glennon, and the Bears now have a chance to make some noise in a wide open NFC North division. THE DEFENSE: B In the first half of the season, the Bears have faced some of the best quarterback talent the league has to offer…and have lived to talk about it. Matt Ryan, Ben Roethlisberger, Aaron Rodgers, Jameis Winston, Cam Newton and Drew Brees have all had their chance to turn this Bears defense into cubs but with the exception of a Week 2 spanking versus the Bucs and the annual blowout at the hands of Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, this Bears defense has stricken fear into the souls of their opponents and have Bears fans asking the question, “Are The Monsters of The Midway back?” Ferocious hits and timely
turnovers have been a consistent theme of this group, and all signs point to this unit only getting better in the second half of the season. COACHING: D Let’s just say head coach John Fox has a half of season to earn his keep, although many insiders believe he already has one

Whether it be the coaching staff being too timid with the offensive playcalling or frustrating fans with blind trust in huff quarterbacks, the fanbase is gearing up and starting to wonder, who will be the next coach of the Bears? With a young quarterback and young weapons all over this squad, John Fox’s seat should only get hotter.
