Rauner’s Thorn: Lisa Madigan By Mary L. Datcher DEFENDER STAFF REPORTER

The latest round in the Governor Bruce Rauner “raucous” is his “take no prisoner” approach on challenging unions on the “fair share” act. “Fair share” refers to fees paid by public employees in a bargaining unit who do not want to join the union as members, but still benefit from collective-bargaining agreements. The fees are supposed to pay the union for the work put into collective bargaining in order to prevent so-called “free riders,” workers who receive union benefits without cost. Removing the fair share stipulation could also weaken the unions. Earlier this month, Attorney General Lisa Madigan boldly filed a motion to intervene Rauner’s federal lawsuit that challenges the constitutionality of “fair share” fees as allowed under the Illinois Public Labor Relations Act. In her 12 years as Illinois’ top attorney, Madigan passed on running against Quinn for the governor’s seat. With a new Republican governor heading the state’s welfare and charge, she now finds herself in a legal duel with the billionaire governor. “As attorney general, it is my job to represent the state and defend our laws when the constitutionality is challenged in court. Because the governor’s case questions the validity of the Illinois Public Labor Relations Act, I moved to intervene to provide the court with arguments regarding the law’s constitutionality,” said Madigan. Last Friday, Madigan issued opinions saying state and federal law do not allow local governments to establish right-to-work zones or change prevailing wage requirements. State legislators are concerned with how this will affect the constituents in their districts especially in communities that are strained financially. As Rauner continues to push forward, he has instructed agencies to take monies away from nonunion workers’ paychecks to prevent future union membership fees. In a memo, Jason Barclay, general counsel for the governor, directs agencies to create two separate sets of books. The memo recommends that each agency prepare a “payroll report using the normal figures,” copy and save it, and then create a second payroll “needed to reduce the gross pay” and enter a zero in a category reserved for fair share amounts. This reduces the worker’s gross pay by an amount equal to what nonunion workers would be paid under the “fair share” fees. It is still not determined what the state saves or what the ultimate cost would be in managing two sets of books, but taxes are based on gross pay and this is sure to affect federal tax withholding or health-insurance payments. Madigan’s filed opinion reveals various examples of similar motions filed in reference to federal jurisdiction. Her filing states: “There are no reported judicial decisions, either State

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan and President Barack Obama or Federal, addressing the specific issue of whether the NLRA (National Labor Relations Act), preempts counties and municipalities in Illinois from enacting ordinances that limit the use of union security agreements.” The motion continues to point out as it relates to the NLRA and its territories at least 25 states have enacted the constitutional provisions or statutes limiting the use of union security agreements. According to this agreement, Illinois does not have such a provision in its laws. So, in other words, this must pass through as a law downstate in Springfield. Rauner is hoping to override the very people that he will need to work with on both sides of the Illinois bi-partisan fence. It appears that Rauner is treating this issue as one of his hostile acquisitions of one of his companies rather than about following the legislative process and abiding by state law. Is this an example of another wealthy businessman acquiring an elected office but not adhering to the law? The wealthy are wealthy because they have the business sense and money to have smart people around who are hired to assist in making smarter decisions. So, what happened in this case? Did the legal team forget to advise our governor that there is a thing called the Illinois Constitution? If so, why is this legal dance taking place between the newly elected Illinois governor and the state attorney general who has been in office since 2003? Many who reside in Illinois are concerned if this is just the tip of the iceberg. We are witnessing a catastrophic situation that could snow ball and continue to negatively affect State funded programs approved under Governor Quinn that will ultimately affect thou-

sands of families. For example, one of the victims of Governor Rauner’s sledge hammer is South Shore Cultural Center where he has cancelled $28 million in grant funds from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for the Chicago Park District. Currently, restoration is put on hold and the $2.5 million promised to the Cultural Center may not be provided in time to complete renovation for their centennial celebration this summer. The question is what next? On this latest round concerning the “fair share” act, Democratic legislators support Madigan’s gutsy move to challenge the governor on this matter. State Senator Mattie Hunter (3rd District) and Majority Whip said, “I support Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s decision to challenge the constitutionality of ‘fair share’ union dues. She consistently fights for the people of Illinois and is looking out for our working class. It’s in the best interest for people to collectively bargain their rights as workers. When that power is taken away, it gives companies greater control over the working class.” Clearly stated, Madigan writes, “Further, even if not preempted by the National Labor Relations Act, it is my opinion that Illinois law does not authorize the creation, through the passage of a referendum, of local zones or areas wherein union security agreements will not be recognized.” In the motion, Madigan concludes that this is a State matter and therefore must be passed through the proper legal process that is governed by the State of Illinois. There’s a new thorn in Governor Rauner’s side greater than Quinn.

BUSINESS

Bringing Beauty Out from the Inside:

Amy Hilliard By Mary L. Datcher DEFENDER STAFF REPORTER

Chicago is home to some of the world’s leading brands and successful companies that have been created and steered by African-American business people. Fashion Fair Cosmetics (FFC) is among them. Created in 1973, it is the largest Black-owned cosmetics company in the world. Part of the Johnson Publishing Company family, FFC was the brainchild of Mrs. Eunice Johnson who created a platform and global stage for many African-American clothing designers and models that remains the blueprint today. Currently, the tradition is alive and well with Amy Hilliard, the company’s president, at the helm. For the past two years, Hilliard has taken on the responsibility of leading the company’s operations, including marketing, sales, retail partnerships and promotions. A native of Detroit, Hilliard is no stranger to the spirit of Black entrepreneurship having grown up in the same neighborhood where Motown began. It was her early introduction to Black ownership. A graduate of Howard University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree, she went on to earn a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard University Business School. Hilliard has become a heavy hitter in the world of brand marketing, product development and retail sales. CD: What brought you to Chicago? AH: I came here in 1992 because my husband at the time had been accepted to the Kellogg School of Business, so the family moved here. I was able to secure a position with Tom Burrell at Burrell Communications Group. While working at the Gillette Company in product management, I met Tom back in 1984 in New York. At the time, I was doing some work for my company. I was enamored of him and his agency. I said to him, ‘One day Mr. Burrell, I want to work for you’ and he said, ‘Great, please stay in touch.’ I kept in touch with him and in 1992 when there was an opportunity 4 March 25-31, 2015 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

to move to Chicago, I wrote to him and he invited me to come talk to him. He brought me in as the Senior Vice President of Integrated Marketing for Burrell Communications Group. At the time, it was still Burrell Advertising and he was looking to combine all three of his businesses -- advertising, public relations and promotions under Burrell Communications Group. He brought me in to lead that effort. CD: In your experience with working for other corporate companies, what makes the experience of working for a Black-owned company different from others?

AH: As soon as I moved to Chicago, the entrepreneurial spirit of the city engulfed me. It was everywhere I looked. The great Black businesses -- Johnson Products, Soft Sheen, Burrell Communications. Everything I had heard of growing up was right here and being able to meet some of the most legendary Black entrepreneurs was an amazing opportunity. CD: With your position now taking the helm of running another iconic brand, Fashion Fair, what are some of the challenges that you see in maintaining the brand presence and visibility? AH: Fashion Fair is experiencing a rebirth. It’s important for people to understand that we need to always move forward and stay current with the trends of today while we build on our legacy. I have a unique position in terms of understanding because when I got out of college, my first job was at Bloomingdale’s as an assistant buyer. I was in the designer dress area and I actually met Mrs. Eunice Johnson. During my first week on the job there was a fashion show for Halston. There were three Black women in the audience getting ready for this major show and Mrs. Johnson didn’t See Amy Hilliard , Page 12 www.chicagodefender.com

Lessons Learned:

Chicago’s Female Spin Doctor By Mary L. Datcher DEFENDER SENIOR STAFF REPORTER

The saying “music soothes the savage beast” is a great description music’s impact and how music has become the soundtrack of our lives. We identify with it through our moods, emotions, triumphs, tragedies and also our spirituality. For many of us growing up, our first musical experience wasn’t always a live performance; it was a relative or friend playing music at a family gathering or function. They played the favorite and nostalgic tunes that brought people together to dance or just to reminisce and connect. Those events were our first glimpses into how to move us -- whoever was controlling the playlist didn’t know they were also the resident DJ. This is how it starts for many DJs – they develop the power to connect through the music. Growing up in Chicago, everywhere one went, music was present. The energy level of the Chicago nightlife was alive from supper clubs, to grand ballrooms, to intimate neighborhood lounges -- there was always music. Many bands were gradually replaced by the DJ in the 1970’s because it was simply less costly and some lounges didn’t have the room for a full band set. As the trend began to grow, the role of DJs changed because they held the power to change the mood and also to build a loyal following. Unfortunately, you rarely saw females playing in the DJ booth and if you did, their male adversaries often questioned ‘why?’ In the early 1980’s, the disco era was starting to fade out on the national scene with mainstream radio but in the underground club world, it was slowly transitioning into another form – house music. The emergence of house music was building a new form of DJs -- hot mixers. The art of being a DJ wasn’t just about playing a record; it was about having the skills to blend a record into another record while setting the mood of the party and keeping the dance floor packed. Not many females were welcomed into the select club because not many dared to step into the booth and

Celeste Alexander rock the turntables -- not until a few ladies came forward. Celeste Alexander is considered one of the first female DJs to gain entry into the “boys’ club” during the earlier phase of hot mixing. Growing up in the Hyde Park neighborhood, she was surrounded by young male friends gradually making a name for themselves on the party scene. Throughout her career, she’s had some trials and triumphs as she’s seen her life become engulfed by the fast pace lifestyle of the music business and her subsequent drug addiction. She had a chance to share her thoughts as one of the few Black female DJs that influenced the scene in Chicago and how she’s survived -- becoming a familiar face back on the DJ scene. How did you start out as a DJ? CA: I formally started out with the help of Steve Hurley. He and I went to college together at Loop College which is now Harold See Spin Doctor , Page 12

E NOTES By Kai EL’Zabar

Defender Executive Editor Just a few weeks after Chicago student Deonte Hoard waved goodbye to the Urban Prep-Englewood boys’ basketball team on a Monday afternoon and then headed home when he was shot to death, Martese Johnson was attacked and bloodied by police. Martese Johnson, 20, a member of the Honor Committee at the University of Virginia, was arrested around 12:45 a.m. last Wednesday and charged with public intoxication and obstruction of justice, according to student newspaper The Cavalier Daily and the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. Video and photos from the arrest show Johnson on the ground with his face and shirt covered in blood as agents hold him down. Johnson later said, “I am shocked that my face was slammed into the brick pavement three blocks from where I attend school.” The incident went viral. We’re all so tired of hearing about yet another Black male attacked by police. It’s the same old story. The reporting is usually the same — ending with an investigation. We all know the result that leads to the benefit of the police officers involved. Not this time. The governor of Virginia has ordered the Virginia State Police to investigate the bloody arrest of Johnson, a third-year student at the prestigious university, by Alcoholic Beverage Control agents outside a Charlottesville bar. Problem is they had no idea that the young man they jumped was from Chicago where uppity Black folks live and have the audacity to demand respect. Yes, Chicago, which was founded by a Black man — Jean Baptiste Point DuSable. Chicago, where the Chicago Defender newspaper was founded. Chicago, where Pullman Porters traveling south dropped off the widely read Chicago Defender published by Robert Abbott Sengstacke whose editorials touted the

opportunities available in the cities of the North. Chicago, where in July 1919, the most serious race riot of that time took place, lasting 13 days. Chicago, where the first Black President emerged. Chicago, where Black politicians, entrepreneurs and corporate businessmen of importance have wealth and influence. Chicago, where educated Blacks with college degrees, careers, positions and power will go to bat to protect the interest of Martese Johnson who was wrongfully attacked. His attorney, Daniel Watkins, said they would fight the charges “with utmost vigor.” Oh yes, they’ve messed with the wrong one when they attacked a Chicago native son and didn’t kill him, thank God. That’s the beautiful thing about Chicago that I love. We take care of our own. So why is it that at the same time we have such a large percentage of Black on Black violence? My hope is that this incident of violence involving Martese Johnson sends a warning to all those wouldbe police killers of Black men, as well as Blacks who have lost their sense of appreciation of self. “Black lives do matter.” Somehow we have to convey to our children that they are important, that they are invaluable, that they are our future —our legacy. I know it is imperative that we accept responsibility for our own while they are alive rather than coming together for the vigils, memorials and funerals of our fallen. We must take back our communities if we are to have a future. Teaching our youth to love, respect and value themselves is a mandate that we must take on and fulfill. Our destiny is ours to choose and will reflect the steps that we take from this point forward. We can no longer sit back and talk among our friends and ask what happened to the youth. News alert! We’re what happened . . . children do not raise themselves. So our lack of child rearing combined with the negative media influences, poor education, breakdown in the community, church and family has created total mayhem in Black communities across the country. Our children are growing up dysfunctional under chaotic circumstances, which renders them confused and angry. It’s not fair to them nor to us. We can take care of them upfront or after the fact. We can love, nurture and prepare them to face this world or we can continue to abandon them and leave them to figure it out on their own. So far that choice hasn’t been working for us. So what’s your choice?

Educating the Kids Nobody Wants After giving a recent education reform speech in Georgia, a thirty-something man approached me to discuss my views on the increasing school expulsion rates for kids, particularly boys of color. She had developed a close relationship with a young boy who had been expelled several times from his school. The man’s wife said that she had been asked to work with the boy because his classroom teacher suspected that the boy had Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Apparently, the boy had been having fits and would, on occasion, throw chairs around the classroom. The teacher reportedly was fearful for her safety and the safety of the other kids in the class. The man then told me that his wife found out that the boy was consistently abused at home and had no outlet to get the counseling help that he needed. As she began to work with the boy, his behavior improved and his attitude towards school improved. When I asked the man about the boy’s grade, he smiled and said, “Mr. Chavous that is why I wanted to talk with you. The boy is only four years old and he did not have ADD. My wife can’t believe that she keeps getting more and more of these intervention calls from preschools. What can be done about this?” Good question. In 2005, Yale professor Walter Gilliam shocked the nation with the first research showing that preschoolers are expelled at three times the rate of children in kindergarten through 12th grade. He showed that young African-American boys like the boy referenced above are most vulnerable to what he calls “the capital punishment of schools.” And while preschoolers’ expulsion rates continue to outpace their K-12 school counterparts, the fact is that all school expulsion rates are growing along with the high school

Kevin P. Chavous dropout rate. All of which begs another question, “Who will educate the kids that nobody wants?” In answering both questions, we must be honest about who will not educate these kids: most local school districts. It is increasingly clear that the vast majority of local school districts -- especially in urban America -- are either unwilling or unable to educate the growing number of kids coming from disadvantaged backgrounds. And since our teaching core has begun to feel the pressure of having their students do well on standardized tests, they do not have the energy or often the skill set to address the needs of our most challenged school population group. As a result, the average local school district resorts to easy special needs labels as a way to get these troubled kids out of the classroom so they won’t affect the other students. As the saying goes, “one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch.” So, they kick these kids out of school. Fortunately, around the country, there are a number of schools that take pride in educating the kids that nobody wants. Schools like the Hope Academy Charter School in Kansas City, Maya Angelou Charter School in D.C. and the Legacy Charter School in Greenville, S.C. Each

of these schools, and several others like them, make it their mission to value all of the kids they serve and they refuse to write kids off based on their background, home life or previous school experience. Knowing that schools like these exist, wouldn’t it make sense for our most challenged school districts to eagerly embrace these alternative programs? Apparently not. Recently, charter school authorizers in Philadelphia rejected the application of Liguori Academy, which made that city the same offer that Hope Academy, Maya Angelou and Legacy made to their cities: let us teach the kids who are the kids toughest to educate. Liguori, through its founders Mike Marrone and Pat Wright, planned on using a model that included a personalized and individualized curriculum, which has been proven as an effective strategy for all students, but especially critical for disengaged learners. The proposed Liguori model has yielded impressive results for the most challenged students in places like Fresno, CA; Buffalo, NY; and Chester, PA. Still, the authorizers in Philadelphia denied Liguori’s application -- even though, according to research conducted by the National Center for Dropout Prevention Network, 5,000 ninth grade students within the School District of Philadelphia, have a less than 1 percent chance of graduating high school. At some point, our education elite will wake up to the fact that one size does not fit all. And that having a menu of education offerings available to educate kids with different needs helps not just those kids, but all kids. ~Kevin P. Chavous

ARTS & CULTURE

CENTURY CYCLE, #7 (Two Trains Running) By Candace Hunter, Arts & Culture Editor

August Wilson is arguably one of the most honored and celebrated American playwrights. A boy from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A boy from a missing father household. A boy whose genius was greater than his teachers’ imaginings. Accused of plagiarism at 15, he left school and settled for an informal education among the laughter, cadence

and rhythms of the denizens of the Hill District in Pittsburgh. Always seen with a pencil and napkins or scraps of paper, Wilson’s mind would never rest. He saw everything, heard everything and recorded much. Before his death in 2005, he succeeded in doing what none other had – he chronicled the lives of the Everyman and Everywoman in the African-American community during the 20th Century.

Great Home Loan Options For Veterans

Ten plays, nine set in Pittsburgh and one in Chicago (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), tell the intimate stories of humans not often examined in American drama. His plays also tell the larger story of America’s history and the impact of race on that history. The seventh play in the cycle, Two Trains Running, opened to a standing ovation at the Goodman Theatre this past weekend. The Goodman offers this play as the lynchpin of a month-long series of programming, “Celebrating a Legend: August Wilson at the Goodman.” This production is directed by Chuck Smith, an associate artistic director at the Goodman, and a man intimately familiar with the works and ways of Wilson. Smith directed Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and served as dramaturg on Gem of the Ocean.” His familiarity and trust in Wilson’s work, make for an evening of intense familiarity. Two Trains is set in Pittsburgh in 1969 at the center of urban renewal, otherwise known as the blight of the Black neighborhood. The interior of a diner is the setting for everything that happens in the play and in these characters’ worlds. In the diner, we meet the only gal of the play, Risa (Nambi E. Kelley); the diner’s owner, Memphis (Terry Bellamy); customer Holloway (Alfred H. Wilson); numbers runner Wolf (Anthony Irons); Risa’s wannabe suitor, Sterling (Chester Gregory); the undertaker, West (A.C. Smith); and the feeble minded Hambone (Ernest Perry, Jr).

There are two more characters who are only spoken of – Aunt Esther and Prophet Samuel. The creation of Aunt Esther was unveiled in Two Trains Running and heard of again in Wilson’s King Hedley II, Radio Golf and finally seen in the play, Gem of the Ocean. Esther in this play is 349 years old (!) and resides behind the red door in the back of 1839 Wylie Street. She is a seer or a psychic or a witch woman or just plain magic. She takes no money for her advice but asks that the client goes and throws $20 into the river and come back. Those that do as she requests reap the rewards of her advice, those who don’t? Well. The other character who is never seen but spoken of often is the Prophet Samuel -- part Father Brown and part Daddy Grace. He has just recently died. His throngs of followers are just down the block keeping vigil. Though Risa had been a follower and believer in the Prophet, she refuses to go and stand in line for a final viewing. Discussions about these two magical creatures continue throughout the play. As I watched the opening, I was dismayed about one thing – the beauty of the set. The diner is a large, booming set with nary a nick or scuff. There is a huge marquee lit sign outside of the diner announcing “Home Cooking,” with the word “Home” looking nearly the height of two stories. Though several times, we are told that the juke box doesn’t work; it looks brand spanking new. Everything looks too clean, too pret-

ty, too unreal for a place in a blighted neighborhood where one can see the rubble of a torn down building just through the plate glass window. But upon contemplation, I now see the set as yet another unheard magical character in the play. A place that becomes the mythical “home” for all who inhabit it. It is the home that gives Risa both refuge and power. It is the home that Wolf uses as his place of business safely. Holloway comes “home” every day with his paper and his philosophies. The diner becomes the home that the recently freed from the penitentiary, Sterling finds. Home to Hambone in his rattled mind. Home to Memphis, who paid for this place with cunning and a horrific history of his previous home in Jackson. The diner does indeed become a magical place in which all of these characters can find solace, comfort, comradery and a sort of peace in an “unpeaceful” world. The diner is indeed home. Two Trains Running is definitely an ensemble piece, but two of the actors stand out: A.C. Smith, through sheer size alone, though soft spoken, is the perfect epitome of the Grim Reaper in his black garb and Homburg hat and whenever Ernest Perry enters the stage with his line, “I want my ham,” he is show stopping. We want him to have his ham too. Two Trains Running runs at the Goodman Theatre through April 19. For ticket information, visit www. goodmantheatre.org.

Today, half of Illinois’ power comes from nuclear energy plants operating in our state. Let’s make sure these plants keep operating in the future. Some of our state’s reliable, state-of-the-art nuclear plants are at risk of closing for economic reasons. According to a State of Illinois report*, here’s what that would cost Illinois families, businesses, and communities: $1.8 billion in annual economic activity

Nearly 8,000 jobs Up to $437 million in increased wholesale electricity costs in northern Illinois in the first year Up to $18 billion in economic damages through increased carbon emissions.

However, legislation now being considered by the General Assembly in Springfield could help preserve

these facilities. This legislation would establish the Low Carbon Portfolio Standard, requiring that a portion of our energy come from sources that emit zero or low amounts of carbon, including nuclear energy. BUSINESS Amy Hilliard from Page 4 know who I was because I was sitting in the front row. At the time, I was with Bloomingdale’s so she came over to me and asked me why I sitting there. I said, ‘Mrs. Johnson, I know who you are. Oh my God. I need to give you much respect.’ She then said to me, ‘Well, let me tell you that today is the first day that all of the Black models on the runway are wearing Fashion Fair Cosmetics for the very first time and you are here to witness history.’ CD: How do you create balance between your personal and business life? AH: I actually have ‘balance’ tattooed on my arm because there are words that I live by -- faith, love, strength, balance and truth. There’s also a picture of a lily because a lily is a flower that does not struggle; it’s just a beautiful work of God. I spend time with the Creator and ask for his guidance and I make sure I build in time for rejuvenation at some point during the day. Also, make sure that there’s time for friends and family to give you that spirit that helps you move forward on a regular basis. This is just as important as going to work every day -- to have the balance that will re-fuel you. CD: What is your advice for women who are wearing multiple hats in their goal to be successful? AH: In my book, Tap Into Your Juice: How to Find Your Gifts, Lose Your Fears, Build Your Dreams, I address the concept that everybody has juice and juice is your energy. With that energy, it’s physical, emotional and spiritual. You have to be able to tap into that juice on a moment’s notice. I have really focused on what works for me. Exercise and eating right are vitally important. Having music that you love at your fingertips as you’re driving to work or tap into your phone. These are the things that matter and I think that people who find the system that works for them should make sure that they honor their passion and make sure that they’re prepared. As women, we have to take care of ourselves because we take care of others so often. Take time out for you.

Spin Doctor from Page 6 Washington College. I had a work-study job in the kitchen and he would come in and order these sandwiches and I thought he was the cutest thing. So, I enrolled in the classes that he was in. Struck up a friendship with him; we would sit and goof around. Steve was always talking about ‘hot mixing.’ I asked him, how come no girls are playing. He said his sister plays and I found an interest. I started asking guys that I grew up with if they could teach me. I was raised and grew up in Hyde Park on 63rd and Woodlawn. So they taught me a little bit of this and a little bit of that. This led me to being introduced to Andre Hatchett and he became my mentor. Through Andre, I was introduced to Frankie Knuckles. What was so magnetic about becoming a DJ when you could’ve chosen another field? CA: Around ‘83, the culture took off. The whole DJ culture. Herb Kent used to do a punk out show and Frankie used to do the mixes for that. So, Frankie started me doing mixes with him so I would go to his house to do the mixes. Some guys accepted me and some guys didn’t. It was really cool being a girl and I was accepted on a ‘guy level.’

I’ve played with everyone out of Chicago -- DJ Terry Hunter, Lil’ Louis, Wayne Williams, Jesse Sanders and Ron Hardy. I played until about ‘94. The Power Plant and Music Box days, there was a lot of drug culture taking place and I got caught up. I became an addict. I dropped off the scene and dealt with my demons. God saw me through that and I just celebrated my 10 year sobriety of being clean. What brought you back from the addiction? CA: Once I did find my way back and progressed in recovery and in life, I learned how to stay clean and learned how to stay out of my own way. I tried to mend some bridges I knew I had burned. One bridge was definitely with Frankie. It had been my culture, it had been my lifestyle. I needed something else to fill me -- the drugs were gone, I’m about to marry and the kids were coming back into my life. I needed something to help to fulfill me. What was the one thing that gave me pleasure outside of the drugs? You see drugs gave me pleasure until they gave me pain. The pain came and the pain stayed. Playing music and being a DJ at parties -- that whole culture of music always gave me pleasure. I discussed it with my fiancé at the time because it was how it started.

Currently, DJ Celeste has her own Internet show which has been on nearly eight years called the Celestial Odyssey every Saturday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on cyberjams.com where she premieres various house DJs weekly. A mom and wife, she is in a different place right now enjoying raising her 13 year-old son and living in the South Suburbs of Chicago. As the co-owner of Sophistacato Records, she shares the operational tasks of working with business partners Steve Steward and producer Vick Lavender as they branch into the international market. Knowing what she knows now, Frankie Knuckles still influences her ability as a DJ today. Celeste adds, “Frankie always kept it classy; it was all about presentation. He would bring you up; he would bring you down; he would mellow you out. He had such bravado. It was like this full journey. He would take me through emotional stuff. That’s the kind of thing that I’ve always wanted to do. How does that translate and connect to me emotionally and spiritually on the floor – even in the booth? It’s a letgo, a vacation, a getaway. You don’t want to think about it. If you can find someone who does that -- that’s magical.

Two Chicago Area Students Honored At White House Science Fair CHICAGO DEFENDER STAFF

With students from a range of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) competitions from across the country looking on, U.S. President Barack Obama delivered remarks after viewing science projects at the White House Science Fair. President Obama visited students who participated in the White House Annual Science Fair on Monday. He was quite taken by a group of kindergarten girls called the Super Girls who invented a book page turner from Legos because they had observed people with various handicaps having difficulty turning pages while reading. Eleven year-old Lily Born of Skokie showcased the Kangaroo Cup. She invented it after seeing how hard it was for her grandfather, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, to drink from regular cups without spilling. Determined to find a solution, Lily designed a spill-proof cup with three legs for stabilization that makes it harder for people to overturn it. Lily says her advice for young girls who want to invent is, “to just go for it.” Fourteen year-old Trisha Prabhu of Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville developed a program called Rethink that’s aimed at combating cyber bullying. She says it helps adolescents think before posting. From a young age, she has been fascinated with the inner workings of the brain. In 2013, Trisha heard about a young girl’s suicide due to bullying on the Internet and set out to find a long-term solution to cyber-bullying. Rethink gives adolescents who are trying to post an offensive message on social media a second chance to reconsider their decision by detecting that a message is offensive and then alerting the writer about the message. Rethink won Trisha a spot as a Google Science Fair 2014 Global Finalist. Her product idea also won first prize at the PowerPitch Competition at 1871, Chicago’s technology and entrepreneurial hub. Rethink has been covered by Business Insider, International Business Times, Huffington Post and several other media outlets. She currently holds a Provisional Patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for Rethink. Prior to her Rethink project, Trisha researched the brain’s role in the cognitive distraction that causes distracted driving. She won a Gold Medal Award from the Illinois Junior Academy of Science for her work. She is an advocate of STEM in education and believes that technology is the future of tomorrow. She has spoken at education and technology confer-
