Vaatsalya makes new inroads into villages through its Rural Birthing Centre at Kotumuchagi, Gadag Dist. Contd. from pg1 Kotumuchagi Panchayat leased 5000 sq ft of land for the centre; Deshpande foundation donated Rs. 10L towards construction; and Vaatsalya built a 1500 sq ft building which will be used for out-patient consultations by the doctor and for providing normal deliveries. According to Dr. V. Renganathan, Co-Founder & VP-Alliance, who developed this innovative concept,
“This is a good example of how government, foundations, and healthcare organizations can come together to provide quality maternity care in the village itself with very limited investments. But such projects cannot succeed without the help and commitment from doctors. In this regard, support from Dr. Prabha Desai, Gynaecologist, Vaatsalya Hospital, Gadag, was crucial for the Photos : Shivaprasad, Vaatsalya, Gadag Kotumuchagi centre” In addition to reducing the cost of care, the centre is also expected to reduce morbidities and mortalities due to pregnancy and delivery. Kotumuchagi, is a village with a population of about 8000 and is located about 20 Kms from Gadag. At a cost of

just Rs 1000, any pregnant woman in Kotumuchagi will get complete antenatal care in the village itself. On doctor’s recommendation, they can also have a normal delivery in the centre itself, with the help of a midwife, for Rs 300. If any complications were to arise during delivery, the woman will be brought to Vaatsalya Hospital, Hubli. Those pregnant women, who the doctor will not recommend to deliver at the birthing centre, will have their delivery at subsidized rates at our hospital. Vaatsalya’s initial survey indicated that most pregnant women in Kotumuchagi did not get any antenatal care and 1 in 4 might have a home delivery.

Though no maternal deaths were evident, certainly neonatal deaths have occurred. Vaatsalya hopes the centre will help save some lives. Kotumuchagi people are thankful to Vaatsalya for choosing their village for their pilot birthing centre.

How many women have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)? Soumya- Gadag
About one in ten women of childbearing age will have PCOS. It can occur in girls as young as 11 years old.PCOS is the most common cause of infertility in females.
What causes polycystic syndrome (PCOS)?
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Pcos) is a health problem that can affect a woman’s Menstrual Cycle, ability to have Children, Hormones, Heart, Blood vessels, and Appearance. • High cholesterol • High blood pressure • Male-pattern baldness or thinning hair • Patches of thickened and dark brown or black skin on the neck, arms, breasts, or thighs • Skin tags, • Pelvic pain
In women with PCOS, the ovary doesn’t make all of the hormones it needs for any of the eggs to fully mature. Follicles may start to grow
ovary
The cause of PCOS is unknown. Genetic alterations are thought to be one of the factors. Research suggests excess insulin appears to increase androgen production. This hormone is made in fat cells, the ovaries, and the adrenal gland. Increased levels of androgens lead to acne, excessive hair growth, weight gain, and problems with ovulation.

and build up fluid. But no one follicle becomes large enough.Instead, some follicles may remain as cysts.Since no follicle becomes large enough and no egg matures or is released, ovulation does not occur and the hormone progesterone is not made. Without progesterone, a woman’s menstrual cycle is irregular or absent. Plus, the cysts make male hormones, which also prevent ovulation.
Vaatsalya’s First Trauma care Hospital
One of the most visible signs of India’s economic growth is the increasing number of vehicles on the road. Unfortunately, road accidents are also on the rise and according to the World Health Organization, India ranks among the worst in traffic accidents. In India, 1 in 6 dies from road accidents due to the lack of Trauma care facilities. In order to save lives, the victim needs to be transported to a Trauma care facility within the “golden hour”, which can last from few minutes to a few hours. Ongole, is a part of coastal Andhra Pradesh, without a Trauma care centre in a 200 Km radius. Dr. Sundar
Rao recognized the need for a trauma care facility in 2004 and started Sri Sai Trauma and Super–Speciality hospital. In the Dr. Sundar Rao last seven years, this hospital has helped 2000 road accident victims. On an average, 1 accident victim is treated at the hospital per day. In 2011, recognizing the pioneering work of Dr. Sundar Rao, Vaatsalya entered into a partnership with Sri Sai Trauma and Super-Speciality hospital. Vaatsalya was able to fully integrate Sri Sai Healthcare into an emergency medical care system. It strives to meet the needs of all injured patients, regardless of severity of injury or geographic location. Vaatsalya’s goal is to match the facility’s resources along with the patients’ needs, so that optimal and cost effective care is achieved. Manasi Nagaraj Staff Correspondent, Vaatsalya, Bangalore

There is no single test to diagnose PCOS.Your doctor will do a detailed physical examination, measure your blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), and waist size. Transvaginal ultrasound also might be used to examine the ovaries for cysts and check out the endometrium, the lining of the uterus. The uterine lining may become thicker if your periods are not regular. Hormone levels and blood glucose should be checked.
Treatment goals are based on your symptoms, whether or not you want to become pregnant, and lowering your chances of getting heart disease and diabetes. Many women will need a combination of treatments to meet these goals. Lifestyle modification. Birth control pills. Metformin Fertility medications. Medicine to treat increased hair growth or extra male hormones. Surgery - “Ovarian drilling”

Getting your symptoms under control at an earlier age can help to reduce your chances of having complications like diabetes and heart disease. Talk to your doctor about treating all your symptoms, rather than focusing on just one aspect of your PCOS, such as problems getting pregnant. Also, talk to your doctor about getting tested for diabetes regularly. Eating right, exercising, and not smoking also will help to reduce your chances of having other health problems.

Only one hospital in Karnataka (Kasturba Hospital, Mani pal) and in AP (SevenHills Hospital, Vishakapatanam) have been accredited in a Tier II town, with the rest being in Tier I cities. (12 in Bangalore and 9 in Hyderabad/ Secundrabad). We in Vaatsalya, by aspiring to and working towards NABH accreditation in our hospitals, are pioneers in trying to raise the quality of healthcare delivered in Tier II and III towns of Karnataka and AP. NABH activities in our hospitals give a unique chance to every nurse, doctor, receptionist, pharmacist, technicians, HR executive and others to learn and perform the best practices that should be done in their department. With new energy let us overcome the remaining challenges to achieving NABH accreditation, so that people can rest assured that the healthcare they get at Vaatsalya is comparable to the best in the country.
