Chemistry Students in National Final A team of lower Sixth students competed in the national final of the royal Society of Chemistry Schools' Analyst Competition on 21st June. luthien liu, Andrew Hankins and nicole landon qualified for the final having won the essex regional heat. it was the second successive year that Chigwell was represented in the national final which was held this year at the university of Bristol. the trio battled for two days through an undergraduate-standard
research project in the university's chemistry laboratories. they had to plan very carefully to read and absorb all the material provided and then work very effectively on their own and as a part of a team to bring together the information that they required for their final report. they all agreed that it was extremely tough but a very good experience and were very pleased to have taken advantage of this opportunity. the team was highly commended in the final feedback session and, as well as individual prizes, they were given a £100 cheque for the School. n

had won through preliminary rounds to compete in the final. Chigwell’s team, consisting of Juliette Aliker, James mulholland, neha Patel and Adam Cooper, sat a 30-minute exam followed by a 2-hour practical exercise in the university’s laboratories. the pupils commented on how much they enjoyed the challenge of high level chemistry. n

The Salters’ Festivals four fourth form pupils were selected to attend the Salters’ festivals of Chemistry at uCl Chemistry Department on 25th April. the festivals are one-day fun events held at universities throughout the uK and ireland and are an initiative of the Salters' institute. their objective is to help promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences among the young. the fourth form pupils representing Chigwell were Sai
Hindocha, edgar Padfield, Charles Peck and Alex Slade. the main focus of the morning was ‘the Salters’ Challenge’. this was a competitive, practical activity, for which no advance preparation was required. in the afternoon students tackled ‘the university Challenge’, which was a practical investigation chosen by the university. this was followed by a ‘fun’ lecture with plenty of demonstrations filled with ‘pops and bangs’. the day ended with a short prize-giving for the winning schools and all participants gained prizes and certificates. n

Polymath Competition
richard Stavri.
on the last two days of the trinity term, luthien liu (lower Sixth) and richard Stavri (upper fifth) took part in the challenging ‘Be A Polymath’ Competition run by university College london. we
are delighted to report that luthien’s team won a prize.
faced challenges relating to chemistry, engineering, physics, mathematics, biology and computer science.
the competition is open to students who have a spark that sometimes does not get measured by gCSe and A levels. over the two days of the competition luthien and richard were assigned to two different groups of five students each and
in the last task, students were allocated a two-hour time limit to design an air-pumping system. luthien's team of five, who designed a tyre that does not go flat and inflates itself to the right pressure using the kinetic energy from a moving car, was adjudicated the winner
and awarded the James Dyson foundation engineering Prize. richard’s team did not win a prize. However, as richard said: “Participating in the competition was excellent fun. we spent two extremely busy, stimulating and challenging days, and although my team did not win, we got a lot of freebies and a bag and the experience was very worthwhile. i would recommend it to anyone else!” n
Rotary Youth Speaks National Final the winners of the london and Home Counties regional final of the rotary youth Speaks Competition, Juliette Aliker, Connor
marcelis and matthew Scudder, travelled to wrexham in wales for the national finals of this competition, but despite an excellent team performance, they
just missed out on the national prize. However, it was quite a feat to reach this level and all three learnt a lot from the experience in spite of
its somewhat nervewracking nature! Chigwell School will be looking forward eagerly to entering teams in next year’s competition. n

The Art of Storytelling the acclaimed storyteller, John Harris, came to the Junior School in June to tell pupils the stories of Orpheus in Love, A Boy Called Patrick and Who’s got Yellow Socks? Pupils were said to be amazed by mr Harris’ capability to memorise pages and pages without making mistakes. over nearly twenty years John Harris told stories to great acclaim in hundreds and hundreds of schools all over the country as well as abroad. He has also published four much loved and critically acclaimed children's books, all of which have arisen from his storytelling. n
The Williams Project Talks in the trinity term our quest for speakers brought us closer to home. richard Barham (oC) spoke on the complexities of corporate law, and our own mrs Sheila Bint and mr Ben wille on cheating in the olympics, ancient and modern. Dr gupta, a Chigwell parent, spoke on money, and the term ended beautifully with two colleagues sharing their enthusiasms: mr Paul eardley’s for Darwin, and miss Charlotte Cantopher’s for post-structuralism and gender theory. n

A Level Results Chigwell School students and staff celebrated their best ever A level results on thursday 16th August. Although nationally the proportion of students receiving top grades has fallen, at Chigwell the number has gone up. this year, 62% of all grades awarded were A* or A grade (compared to a national average of 27%) and 86% of grades were at B or above. of the year group of 85 students, 34 achieved at least three A* or A grades and sixteen achieved four or more.
Headmaster, mr michael Punt, commented: “these results reflect the hard work put in by students and their teachers over a long period of time. they should feel very proud of their outstanding results which enable many to go on to competitive university courses including eight to read medicine, Veterinary Science or Dentistry. A small number of others have secured places on prestigious management trainee courses in the City. this year group have been a delight to work with, have contributed a great deal to the life of the School and we will miss them. we wish them every future success and happiness.” n

DRAMA
‘What is drama but life with the dull bits cut out?’ (Alfred Hitchcock) trinity term was a very busy one for the Drama Department. the Junior School play, The Thwarting of Baron Bolligrew, directed by miss Janey foster, was an opportunity for the younger pupils at Chigwell to perform in this delightful tale of barons and dragons.
the audience was transported with the unlikely hero, Sir oblong fitz oblong, played by Zoe wright, to the island of Baron Bolligrew, played by lara Carter, to free the peasants and animals from the Baron's wicked ways. notable performances were: Stevie Southall and Alice Carter for their performances as mischievous magpies, tess Kelly for her outstanding performance as the wicked Dr moloch, and Alex Sugar for his hilarious Sir Percival Smoothely Smoothe. the Junior School musical, Bugsy Malone, directed by mr Ben wille, followed swiftly after this and was a great triumph for all concerned.
Scenes from The Thwarting of Baron Bolligrew.
the Sixth form Play, directed by the lower Sixth Drama Scholar, Sophie Bishop, was Amanda whittington’s Be My Baby, a poignantly entertaining look at the lives of a group of girls sent to a ‘mother and Baby’ home for becoming pregnant outside of marriage. As society’s label of shame hangs over them, the girls realise that they must give up their babies. Set in 1964 and performed with music of that unforgettable pop decade, this was a touching finish to the year’s productions. the academic drama calendar was rounded off by a series of evenings of drama performances which included the lower fifth
gCSe devised drama and the lower Sixth Drama monologues. the standard of performance remains exceptionally high in the Drama Department, the proudest hour this year perhaps being the A2 devised play, Watch Me Die, for which all six candidates were awarded 100% for acting and technical work. finally, the Drama department hosted its second Annual Dinner and Awards night on 15th June, celebrating the best of Chigwell’s actors. it was once again a glittering occasion with a reception and buffet before the presentation of the awards. n

ART & DESIGN
‘Art is a lie that makes us realise truth.’ (Pablo Picasso) this has been a very active, stimulating and satisfying trinity term in art and design. in the Senior School, there has been a fascinating range of subjects and topics explored by the pupils and the work they have made has been superb, reflecting a great sense of individuality and independence. the variety of work has been outstanding and the integration of new technologies with established methods of creating art and design is a real strength of the department. the versatility and flexibility of these approaches continues to be something that enables our pupils to produce some truly outstanding work that reflects their interests and ideas with amazing depth, confidence and panache. extra-curricular and enrichment activities have also made a great contribution to the success of the department and the pupils’ enjoyment of art and design. many of the pupils have taken advantage of the close proximity of Chigwell to london to visit some of the

Activities Week Pupils, from lower one to lower Sixth, were busy over the Activities week taking part in activities ranging from walking and youth hostelling in the lake District in rather mixed weather to taking a day trip to Boulogne and visiting the Science museum and national gallery. Part of the purpose of the week was to strengthen the
School’s links with local charities and our students. Some of the lower fifth pupils spent a whole day with a number of charities doing practical work or talking to local residents. the younger pupils raised funds through sponsored laps of the running track interspersed with some time on an inflatable assault course kindly supplied by the friends of Chigwell. Trip to Greece over the easter break, twenty-two pupils had an extremely successful Classics trip to greece. over the week they visited all the major mainland sites, both from the ancient past and the less well known but fascinating Byzantine period. Highlights were Athens, Delphi, olympia, mystra, Sparta, mycenae, Corinth and the huge theatre at epidaurus. weather, hotels and food were all glorious, but the best of all was the unprecedentedly eager, mature and focused group of students: no early start was too early, no temple one too many. Staff were so impressed that they plan to let this group, and their friends, help contribute to the planning of the next tour. n
The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme year after year we have seen an increase in the number of students wanting to complete their Duke of edinburgh Award. fifty-four of the lower fifth joined at Bronze level at the beginning of the year; their expeditions include practising

Cricket we have had an unusual start to the season due to the bad weather and waterlogged pitches.
in the 1st Xi HmC t20 tournament (against St Albans), Sonal ohrie (u14) bowled brilliantly, taking 3 wickets for 9 runs in only 2 overs. this was a great achievement for someone so young.
Chigwell played their first home match on the 17th may which is incredible, as the season was due to start on the 22nd April. By the 22nd June we had only played 31 matches and had cancelled 52, quite astonishing in one season.
the u14s and u15s also had a reasonable amount of success throughout the season, including victories against westminster and enfield grammar School.
Due to exams, the weaker 1st Xi started their season with two losses against Bishop’s Stortford and westminster. However, the highlight of the season was the win against enfield grammar. Batting first, Chigwell scored a healthy total of 292 in 40 overs, with two of the Chigwell batsmen scoring over fifty. in reply Chigwell bowled enfield out for just 145.
the u13A were Chigwell’s most victorious cricket team. they produced victories against both forest and Brentwood, and won all their other matches. they also won the prize for the most successful Chigwell cricket team: tickets to lords to watch a t20 match, essex v middlesex (essex won)! the u9s played their first competitive game of the season against a strong South loughton/essex metropolitan

team. Although Chigwell lost, the u9s definitely proved they will be a very good team in the future. the commitment and the development of the u8, u9, u10 and u11 teams have been excellent. they have progressed and improved as cricketers.
Chigwell School teaches all their students about the ‘Spirit of the game’ and the ‘etiquette of Cricket’, particularly clapping your opponents off the field at lunch, tea or at the end of play, shaking hands with your opponents after the game, and understanding that the umpire’s decision is final. n

Tennis Boys’ Tennis Both the u15s and u13s have played in the county cup competitions sponsored by Aegon. matches are initially played in boxes of four or five teams. the u15s won two games but lost in the final encounter against Coopers’ Coborn School from upminster. this meant they just missed out on a semi-final place against Southend High School. five players made up the side: Conor Caplan, Ben good, Daniel whitehead, Joseph Deeks and Jordan grace. the u13s won all four of their group matches with some very close encounters against Southend High and Coopers’ Coborn. Both matches finished level after all four singles and both doubles, but Chigwell managed to triumph in the playoff doubles winning both championship tie breaks. this meant that Chigwell had progressed to the essex County final. there Chigwell played new Hall School from Chelmsford who proved to be a little too
strong for the Chigwell four, winning 5½ to a ½.the team were: liam and ryan farrant (upper two), Sam Jones (third form) and michael Chamberlain. All four must be commended for their efforts this season. n
Girls’ Tennis unfortunately, due to the bad weather, the u18 girls’ tennis fixtures at the start of the term were all rained off. the middle school had some competitive matches and the lVth girls in particular showed some very good results against Bancrofts and St edmunds. this year saw a new competition launched, the Chigwell mothers and Daughters tennis tournament, and on a (rare) sweltering Saturday the doubles pairs took to the courts for a very enjoyable but competitive day. Congratulations to mrs Halls and Sophie who were crowned champions after a closely fought final. n

Hockey we are always interested to hear about pupils’ successes outside of school and so we were delighted to hear that eight of our pupils took part in the national Club finals over the easter break. Six boys, Andrew macgregor, Albert Padfield, william godfrey, Chris Halls, Conor Caplan, and matthew Higgins, played for the old loughtonians u16s who won their competition, and two girls, georgia o’Connor and rayo ladipo, played for the u16 girls who finished fourth.
in addition, william godfrey and Conor Caplan represented the england Boys’ u16 team in
the four nations tournament in Holland and gained their full england Caps. Both boys have
gone on to make several notable appearances this season in international tournaments. n

Golf this again was a very successful year with twelve matches played and no defeats. the year started with House golf and lambourne, with a particularly strong team, won the event. there was a staff fixture this year and although this was well contested the staff were comprehensively beaten. our Junior and Senior teams played forest School twice each throughout the year and Chigwell won all four fixtures. we also managed to get our revenge on the old Chigwellians this year by beating them 3 matches to 1. we entered a strong team for the essex Schools’ golf Championships. A total of 88 boys and girls took part in this event from across the county and four boys from Chigwell qualified to take part in this competition, (Joshua Banfield, Harry Butler, william godfrey and tom Clapham). they all played well on the links Course but tom Clapham came runner up in the u14 competition, which is a very impressive achievement. we also entered a team of five players in the independent

Schools golf Championships at the Shire in london. All played very well but special mention should go to Harry Butler who came third scoring 81 on this particularly difficult course. the essex Schools’ golf Championship’s team.
Patrick murphy. on our books to date we have over thirty boys with a handicap of twenty-eight or less and another 12 players in the Junior School who are aiming to get their handicaps below 30. our aim now is to see more girls taking part in golf at Chigwell and we were thus delighted that third former maisy Howson represented the School this year. the inaugural golf weekend for Chigwell golfers and their parents
took place in April at Barnham Broom golf resort in norfolk. there were nineteen golfers in total, thirteen pupils and six adults. the venue has two golf courses and we played the Hill course on the Sunday and the Valley course on the monday. the standard of golf was excellent and the overall winner was Joshua Banfield who scored an impressive 4 over par gross on the Sunday. n

the expected bad weather didn’t materialise and a fantastic time was had by all pupils. the festival was organised by mike Spinks from the english Schools fA and mr Creag lawrence.
the event was a great opportunity to bring together schools from the local community and encourage as many boys and girls as possible to have a fun experience of the game in a safe environment.

u13 team who came second in the Brentwood tournament, as well as reaching the final stages of the iAPS competition. the u11s have also been competing in an additional league at redbridge and performed well at their tournament.
the squads across the School have grown, becoming more competitive and there are now a large number of girls from the 1st team to u13 level competing for clubs in the met league and the Premier national league. we are looking forward to further success next year. n

A Walk in Aid of PEAS money raised by pupils, when they took part in a Bridges to Africa sponsored walk in london earlier in may, was presented to the PeAS charity (Promoting equality in African Schools) on tuesday 10th July.
the walk itself was a great occasion and the pupils enjoyed learning about how the money will be used to try to ensure wider access to education across Africa. n
Sixteen students raised £1,314 which was presented to the charity’s representative Abigail Colley. the walk saw the students cover 10kms crossing ten london bridges. they started in Vauxhall and finished at tower Bridge. when Abigail visited the school to talk to the third and fourth form pupils at the beginning of the term, mr Damian rabbitte and mr robert ogle decided a sponsored walk would be a great way to get the pupils involved with the charity.

Nicholas osborn completes the London Marathon Sixth former nicholas osborn raised over £3,000 for Havens Hospices by completing the london marathon.
in preparation for the marathon, nicholas had completed two halfmarathons in times of 1hr 48mins, however his pre-marathon training was hampered after he sustained a knee injury which prevented him from training for six weeks.
nicholas crossed the finishing line in 5hrs 18mins despite still recovering from a sport-related injury.
Despite the aches and pains, the experience has not put nicholas off the prospect of entering again.
He decided to run for Havens Hospices to thank the charity for the care it is providing for his cousin, laurel, who has a genetic disease.
He said: “i would certainly do it again, the journey of training and the climax of it all on race day was a unique experience which shaped me hugely. i can’t wait to put the running shoes back on!” n

A Pre Prep School for Chigwell
in August we learnt that we had been granted planning permission to build a Pre Prep School. this is an important strategic development for the School as it will enable parents to have children of all ages in different sections of Chigwell and there has already been a significant demand for places. Currently Chigwell School, which was founded in 1629, admits pupils at the age of seven. the Pre Prep will enable
the School to take girls and boys from the age of four. there will be two classes of eighteen children in each of the three pre prep years, reception, year 1 and year 2, when the new school reaches capacity. we have the perfect site for the development in a secluded spot right in the heart of the 100 acre Chigwell campus, easily accessible from the car park. the Pre Prep will be enclosed and self-sufficient above the allweather pitch on what is currently the grounds yard. the building will have its own hall for assemblies, Pe and dining; there will be a library and other specialist rooms as well as six spacious classrooms. outside, there will be plenty of play space of various types to stimulate
children to learn and discover throughout each school day. the shape of these days will be such that many pre prep children will arrive and leave at different times to existing Chigwell pupils but extra parking will also be created as part of the project. the governors have invited building contractors to submit tenders for the build and subject to these tender responses, we hope to open the Pre Prep in September 2013. Headmaster mr michael Punt commented: “this is a very exciting project and an important development for Chigwell School. increasingly, busy families want to have children of different ages attending one school and this will enable us to make life
easier for them and to provide a first class education for younger children in a custom-built building in the beautifully green surroundings that we are so fortunate to have. we have been overwhelmed by the number of enquiries we have received and will be providing further information over the coming weeks. we appreciate how important it is to give children the very best start to their time at school and we are looking forward to providing an exciting, challenging supportive and rich education that extends to children of this age. if you are still interested in a place at the Pre Prep, please contact our Admissions registrar (mrs J. long 020 8501 5702 jlong@chigwell-school.org). n
Chigwell’s 100 acres in a recently strengthened partnership, the old Chigwellian Club, which adjoins Chigwell School, transferred its Clubhouse and sports grounds, amounting to 25 acres, to the School.
old Chigwellians sign the agreement donating the Clubhouse and grounds to the School.
over 30 years ago a group of old Chigwellians bought the land as a permanent sports ground for old Chigwellians on which the roding lane clubhouse was built. over five years ago the School and Club came together to try to find a solution to the problem of both declining numbers joining the Club and lack of volunteers to help manage it. three years ago the old Chigwellian Association was formed, to which all Chigwellians belong on leaving the School. last year, the school lettings company, Chigwell mitre enterprises, took over the running and letting of the Club, and the facilities there have been enhanced tremendously for the benefit of old Chigwellians, those who let the facilities and for current pupils. finally, last month, an agreement was signed
whereby the old Chigwellian trustees and members gifted the Clubhouse and site to the School. this is a hugely significant gift, comparable with the most generous that the School has had since our foundation in 1629 and it expands the School grounds to 100 acres. the ever improving Clubhouse and grounds are a
resource for existing and former pupils and is increasingly used by organisations from the local community. we are very grateful to the members and trustees of the Club as well as the original founders for having the vision to acquire the land which can now be enjoyed by future generations. n 22 | 23
